Midazolam, the drug most commonly used drug in palliative care and a controversial ingredient of the toxic lethal injection concoction, is actively used as a โ€œfirst-line sedativeโ€ for COVID-19 patients โ€“ particularly those classed as requiring critical care.

Whilst it is used as a sedative and anaesthetic to cause drowsiness, relieve anxiety, and in some cases cause total loss of consciousness, the drug can slow or stop your breathing completely and patients must be monitored closely if they are given a dose. Yet, why is a drug that can induce significant depression of respiration being used a key drug to treat COVID-19 patients?

It makes no sense to treat critically ill COVID-19 patients, who are battling a respiratory illness, with a sedative that causes breathing difficulties.

What is equally as disturbing is the news that the UK government obtained large quantities of midazolam through diverting shipments intended for France, which was allegedly done as a โ€œprecautionโ€ in preparation for potential NHS shortages of the drug due to COVID-19.

Accord Healthcare, one of five manufacturers of midazolam, gained regulatory approval to sell French-labelled supplies of midazolam injection to the NHS, after having already sold two yearsโ€™ worth of stock to UK wholesalers โ€œat the request of the NHS in March 2020. For comparison, over the past five years, about 15,000 prescriptions were made each month in the UK for midazolam to be used outside of hospital, whereas in April, a staggering 38,582 prescriptions were made.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said that the request for the extra stock was part of โ€œnational efforts to respond to the coronavirus outbreakโ€, including precautions โ€œto reduce the likelihood of future shortages.โ€

The Royal College of Anaesthetists has labelled midazolam a โ€œfirst-lineโ€ sedative when treating COVID-19 patients and has warned in guidance published on 2 April 2020 that it may be subject to demand pressure as a result of the pandemic.

In April, Matt Hancock told the House of Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee that intensive therapy unit medicines โ€“ including midazolam โ€“ are part of a โ€œdelicate supply chainโ€ because they โ€œare made in a relatively small number of factories around the world.โ€

The DHSC stated that midazolam is still available for primary and secondary care, but some suppliers of the drug had very limited stock or had completely run out.

In May 2020, a spokesperson from Accord Healthcare stated that it had no midazolam stock available after the NHS requested it โ€œplace all of its stock of midazolam โ€“ equivalent to around two yearโ€™s forecasted supply โ€“ into its wholesale partnersโ€, despite the manufacturer currently not having any โ€œNHS contracts in Englandโ€ to supply the sedative.

Peter Kelly, managing director of Accord Healthcare, said: โ€œAs a result of the NHS request [in March 2020], we are subsequently out of stock.โ€

Although, according to Kelly, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) gave Accord Healthcare approval โ€œfor some French label stock โ€“ another 22,000 packs โ€“ to be sold into the NHS and [we] are currently waiting for the MHRAโ€™s direction on where to place the stock.โ€

The drug manufacturer revealed that the French supply of midazolam only includes the drug at a variety of four different strengths.

A spokesperson for the DHSC said it was working with the NHS and the pharmaceutical industry to ensure that โ€œpatients can access medicines they need and precautions are in place to reduce the likelihood of future shortages.โ€

The DHSC confirmed that securing additional midazolam stock was one of these precautions, adding: โ€œAs part of our national efforts to respond to the coronavirus outbreak, we are doing everything we can to ensure patients continue to access safe and effective medicines.โ€

Considering how midazolam affects the respiratory system โ€“ potentially stopping patients from breathing โ€“ we need to question why this drug is being used to treat those with Covid, and why the UK government and NHS require such large quantities of stock of the sedative. Is it possible that midazolam may be being used to prematurely end the lives of thousands of people, who were then simply labeled another COVID-19 death?

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) โ€” Police are investigating after shots were fired outside the Walmart in the Waterworks Shopping Plaza, authorities said.

 

Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said a vehicle was shot up in the parking lot on Tuesday, but no one was injured. There was a person in the backseat who was waiting for a relative inside the store, Hissrich said.

 

โ€œHow he escaped is what I would consider a miracle,โ€ Hissrich said.

 

Officials said the person in the vehicle had no connection to the suspects in this incident.

 

The Public Safety director said four suspects were involved. He said the four were inside the store, came outside to the parking lot, and that is when the shooting happened.

 

He said three fled the scene and one was thought to be inside the store. A tactical team cleared the Walmart, and no suspects were found, authorities said.

 

Officials believe some of the suspects got away in a vehicle. Police have not provided a description of the suspects.

A witness told KDKAโ€™s Jennifer Borrasso over the phone that she heard gunshots at around 5:30 p.m. after she saw two men arguing outside the store.

 

The witness said that is when the store started evacuating customers.

 

โ€œIt was like clap, clap, clap, it was like cement bags hitting a marble floor,โ€ another witness, Chuck Foster, said.

 

โ€œIt was commotion before that, and then clearly loud pops,โ€ he added.

 

More than 100 shoppers and dozens of employees were ushered to a restaurant across the street while law enforcement cleared the scene.

 

โ€œWe heard a commotion and it was the staff yelling for everybody to immediately get out of the store,โ€ customer Kevin Dumas said.

 

A Walmart employee who did not want to be identified told KDKA he was working inside and was alerted by his manager that, โ€œThereโ€™s an active shooter.โ€

 

He said the shooting incident was something he and his coworkers were more than prepared for. The employee said they had active shooting training in the past.

 

โ€œWe hear about it a lot. We see and watch the tapes. Weโ€™re prepared to do it, and everybody was organized,โ€ the employee said.

 

Once officers cleared the scene, the store was closed for the evening, and workers were sent home.

 

Public Safety said the investigation has been turned over to the Crime Scene Unit.

Denmark study confirms rare heart risk from Moderna jab

The Moderna Covid jab carries a slight risk of usually non-serious heart problems a study of the entire population of Denmark found Friday.

 

Incidences of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart) after mRNA jabs from Pfizer and Moderna had been noted in vaccine safety reports and small-scale studies.

 

These reports led France, Denmark and other countries to advise against the jab for people under 30 years old.

 

"Vaccination with mRNA-1273 (Moderna) was associated with a significantly increased rate of myocarditis or myopericarditis, especially among individuals aged 12-39 years," the study said.

 

It said that vaccination with Pfizer was only associated with an increased risk among women.

 

The study published in the BMJ medical journal is the first to look at these side effects in an entire population.

 

While it confirms the risks, it insists they are slight and that the risks posed by Covid infection are greater.

 

It noted that among the vaccinated who developed myocarditis or pericarditis "only a few" had severe outcomes.

 

In the case of the 21 people diagnosed with the conditions after receiving Moderna, over half were released from the hospital within 72 hours and none died or were diagnosed with heart failure.

 

"Our finding of a low absolute risk of myocarditis or myopericarditis with BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273 vaccination supports the overall benefits of such vaccination on an individual, societal, and global level," the study concluded.

Record-breaking winds tore through the United States on Wednesday and early Thursday, causing the highest number of hurricane-force gusts in a single 24-hour period since at least 2004, the National Weather Service said, days after one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in U.S. history.

Wednesday's severe weather caused multiple power outages and disruption at Kansas City International Airport in Missouri, as well as reports of wildfires. More than 450,000 homes and businesses were without power in the affected states as of Thursday afternoon, according to the tracking website PowerOutage.

I understand that Abraham Lincoln is America's favorite person and I can kind of see why historians would toe the mythology line for him, so what I'm going to say may seem treasonous to some people. But out of respect for Honest Abe, I'm going to clear some things up.

 

When Abraham Lincoln was declared the winner of the 1860 American Presidential election, his political managers suggested that he make the most of his trip to the Capitol by taking a tortuous tour of the Northern states by rail, stopping at all the major and middling cities to give speeches and shake hands at various junkets and jamborees along the way.

 

One thing that was odd was that after Lincoln's train had left Cincinnati, people along the route began having difficulty determining which of the passengers on the train was supposed to be the President. At many of the stops, however, the crowds weren't given a chance to hazard a guess. Citing a pressing schedule and the President's ill health, the train cruised on through without so much as a Presidential bow from the caboose landing.

 

There was more excitement to come. The most famous incident of the trip occurred in Philadelphia on February 21, 1861. Here the Presidential party was apprised by a couple of messengers of a probable assassination attempt planned to take place in Baltimore, just two stops ahead. These warnings were brought to the President-elect separately, and apparently through separate channels, by Allan Pinkerton and Frederick Seward (son of Lincoln's incoming Secretary of State WIlliam Seward) the latter intelligence having a stamp of endorsement from the country's top military commander, General Winfield Scott.

 

Lincoln was reluctant to alter his plans (according to the narrative) but at length agreed to sneak away from the official inauguration train at Harrisburg, (the stop preceding Baltimore) double back to Philadelphia with Pinkerton and a friend from Illinois named Ward Hill Lamon and then take the night train to Washington DC from Philadelphia, arriving at their destination several hours earlier than the rest of the party who had spent the night in Harrisburg.

At any rate, in order to put the issue on a more objective footing, I made use of AI-based identity analysis software to look at the photographs. For this test I submitted a pair of putative Abraham Lincoln photos (above, left) and a pair comprising a photo of Abraham Lincoln and one of Morrissey (above, right). The computed likelihood of the pair's depicting the same person is registered as a decimal percentage. In light of the computer's verdict, we see that both the traditional story of Abraham Lincoln and the Morrissey-is-Abraham-Lincoln conspiracy theory appear to be on shaky ground.

A month after the second inauguration, the war was over. Now, after Lee's surrender, the event of the President's unexpected death would serve as a solemn benediction to the conflict rather than a blow to morale. And besides, it would now have the effect of rendering the terms of peace politically irreversible.

 

The timing really worked out in another way too. The assassination of Lincoln occurred on Good Friday and his body was laid in state on Easter. Surely you are dazzled by the sophisticated form of wickedness evinced in this novel scheme! No?

Microsoft: Hackers in China, Iran and elsewhere start exploiting widespread Apache Log4j flaws

 

Microsoft says groups connected to governments in China, Iran, North Korea and Turkey have begun exploiting vulnerabilities in the Apache Software Foundationโ€™s widely used open-source Log4j software library.

 

Hackers can use the software flaws to gain control of compromised computers and systems. Microsoft has detected initial activity by government-affiliated groups ranging from experimentation to active exploitation of the vulnerabilities, the company said Tuesday in an updated post about the issue.

 

Others are using flaws to gain initial access for ransomware attacks.

 

โ€œThese access brokers then sell access to these networks to ransomware-as-a-service affiliates,โ€ Microsoft said. โ€œWe have observed these groups attempting exploitation on both Linux and Windows systems, which may lead to an increase in human-operated ransomware impact on both of these operating system platforms.โ€

 

The U.S. Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Agency says software vendors who use Log4j in their products should apply the patches as soon as possible and inform their users to prioritize software updates, given โ€œthe severity of the vulnerabilities and the likelihood of an increase in exploitation by sophisticated cyber threat actors.โ€

Fed Speeds Up Tapering, Projecting 3 Rate Hikes in 2022

 

The Federal Reserve announced on Dec. 15 that it will end its aggressive pandemic-era stimulus sooner than expected as inflation is becoming โ€œmore persistent.โ€

 

The central bank will speed up its tapering of bond purchases, bringing the monthly drawdown to $30 billion versus $15 billion announced last month. This would conclude the tapering process in March, paving the way for earlier interest rate increases.

 

Fed officials now expect three quarter-point rate boosts in 2022 and further three rate increases in 2023. This is a significant shift from the September meeting.

 

The Fed completed its two-day Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on Dec. 15, which was described by market analysts as the most important meeting of the year.

 

โ€œIn light of inflation developments and the further improvement in the labor market, the Committee decided to reduce the monthly pace of its net asset purchases by $20 billion for Treasury securities and $10 billion for agency mortgage-backed securities,โ€ the FOMC statement reads.

 

โ€œBeginning in January, the Committee will increase its holdings of Treasury securities by at least $40 billion per month and of agency mortgageโ€‘backed securities by at least $20 billion per month,โ€ Fed officials stated, noting that the central bank could adjust the pace depending on the economic outlook.

 

Speaking at a post-meeting press conference, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the decision to phase out bond purchases more rapidly is driven by โ€œelevated inflation pressuresโ€ and strong labor recovery.

 

Fed officials stated that they would hold the federal funds rate at a range of zero to 0.25 percent, in line with expectations.

 

โ€œJob gains have been solid in recent months, and the unemployment rate has declined substantially,โ€ the statement said.

 

โ€œSupply and demand imbalances related to the pandemic and the reopening of the economy have continued to contribute to elevated levels of inflation. Overall financial conditions remain accommodative, in part reflecting policy measures to support the economy and the flow of credit to U.S. households and businesses.โ€

 

Powell indicated that a change in interest rates may come after March 2022 as rate increases wouldnโ€™t be suitable while the Fed continues to purchase assets.

 

The Fedโ€™s inflation projections increased for next year, with core inflation at 2.7 percent compared to the 2.3 percent forecast in September.

 

Powell said that a disappointing metric in the economic recovery has been labor force participation.

 

โ€œIt feels likely now that the return to higher participation is going to take longer,โ€ he said.

 

While the unemployment rate significantly improved in recent months, millions of Americans are still hesitating to reenter the workforce. In November, the labor force participation rate stood at a 43-year low of 61.6 percent. The economy is running 4 million to 6 million workers short of its pre-pandemic level despite a near-record 11 million open jobs.

 

The Fedโ€™s announcement is in line with recent market surveys. According to the latest CNBC Fed Survey results, economists, strategists, and money managers anticipated the central bank would stop its asset acquisitions by March 2022 and begin raising interest rates in June 2022.

 

Powell said the Fed isnโ€™t behind the curve as many critics have argued, adding that the central bank is taking steps โ€œin a thoughtful mannerโ€ to address issues, including surging consumer prices.

 

But will the Fedโ€™s measures be enough to curb 39-year high inflation levels? Financial experts are split on the efficacy of the Fed doubling its pace of tapering the pandemic-era stimulus that was designed to cushion the blows from the economic fallout of COVID-19.

History Reveals Tapering Is a Theoretical Activity

At various points in time, the U.S. Federal Reserve (the Fed)โ€”and other central banks that have engaged in QE in recent decadesโ€”have announced intentions to eventually taper and reverse QE.1 However, central banks have thus far proven unable or unwilling to engage in sustained tapering, much less a complete reversal, of their QE policies.

The U.S. Fed, Bank of England, European Central Bank, Bank of Switzerland, and Bank of Japan have all proposed or attempted to taper or unwind their QE policies, only to subsequently renew and accelerate asset purchases and continue expanding their balance sheets.23456

Sweden's Central Bank, the Sveriges Riksbank, made the most successful move so far toward reducing its balance sheet from 2010 to 2011, but has steadily expanded its balance sheet since then to nearly double its previous peak. As a result, the theoretical idea of central banks tapering or unwinding QE remains a largely empty promise rather than a real possibility.7

One explanation for why central banks are reluctant to pull back on their QE policies is the recurrence of so-called "taper tantrums." Investors (and the financial markets as a whole) can react in extreme ways to the possibility that stimulus from the central bank might slow.

For example, announcements of impending central bank tapering have typically been met with sharp rises in government bond yields and drops in equity markets. This creates a powerful incentive to monetary policymakers to either delay or reverse plans to unwind their balance sheets because they want to avoid harming the interests of their constituents in the financial sector.

Example of Tapering

In the U.S., the Fed's QE programs have involved the purchasing of assets, including mortgage-backed securities (MBS) and other assets with long-term maturities, to help bring down interest rates. These purchases reduce the available supply of bonds on the open market, resulting in higher prices and lower yields (i.e., long-term interest rates).

Lower yields lower the cost of borrowing. Theoretically, a lower cost of borrowing should make it easier for businesses to finance new projects, which also raises employment. And an increase in employment levels should lead to an increase in overall consumption and economic growth.

Essentially, QE is one monetary policy tool that the Fed can use to stimulate the economy. When QE is undertaken, the Fed promises these policies will be rescinded gradually, or tapered, once the objective of these policies has been met.

Federal Reserve QE Program After the 2007โ€“2008 Financial Crisis

A recent example of attempted tapering by the Fed followed the massive QE program implemented in reaction to the 2007-08 financial crisis. Tapering came to the fore in June 2013 when the former Chair of the Fed, Ben Bernanke, announced that the Fed would reduce the number of assets purchased every month as long as economic conditions, such as inflation and unemployment, were favorable. In this case, tapering referred to the reduction, not the elimination, of Fed asset purchases.8

As 2013 drew to a close, the Federal Reserve Board concluded that QE, which had increased the Fed's balance sheet to $4.5 trillion, had achieved its intended goal, and it was time for tapering to commence. The process of tapering would involve making smaller bond purchases through October 2014.

After noticing "unusual activity" on Saturday, Kronos noted that its systems were down and could remain that way for several weeks.

 

Kronos has a long list of notable customers across the public and private sector, including the city of Cleveland, New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Tesla and MGM Resorts International. It also works with many hospitals across the country.

 

Some employers find themselves having to make contingency plans in order to pay workers, such as shifting to paper checks. And some impacted employees have been unable to access payroll systems.

 

The ransomware attack impacts Kronos Private Cloud solutions, a data storing entity for several of the company's services, including UKG Workforce Central, which is used by employees to track hours and schedule shifts.

 

"UKG recently became aware of a ransomware incident that has disrupted the Kronos Private Cloud, which houses solutions used by a limited number of our customers. We took immediate action to investigate and mitigate the issue, have alerted our affected customers and informed the authorities, and are working with leading cybersecurity experts," a Kronos spokesperson told CNN Business.

The Federal Reserve's Tapering Plan

At the beginning of 2014, the Fed announced its intention to reduce its monthly purchases from $75 billion to $65 billion. Tapering would start at $6 billion a month for Treasury securities and $4 billion for MBS. The process would be capped at $30 billion for Treasury securities and $20 billion for MBS; once these levels were reached, additional payments would be reinvested.910

At this pace, the Fed's balance sheet was expected to fall below $3 trillion by 2020.11 Instead, facing a stiff and immediate market taper tantrum, the Fed maintained its balance sheet at around $4.5 trillion through early 2018. At this point, it began a very gradual reduction in its assets.6

By mid-2019, market reaction to the mild pullback in QE had resulted in an inverted yield curve and increasing indications of an impending recession. Once again, the Fed began accelerating its QE policies (by increasing its bond purchases), with assets exceeding $4 trillion in December 2019 and exploding over $7 trillion in early 2020, as fears of the coronavirus gripped the Fed.12

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fed implemented many expansionary policy measures to guide the recovery of the economy. At the end of May 2021, after meeting notes were released from a central bank policy meeting in April, speculation began among investors that the Fed might begin tapering off bond purchases. According to the meeting notes, "a number of participants suggested that if the economy continued to make rapid progress toward the Committeeโ€™s goals, it might be appropriate at some point in upcoming meetings to begin discussing a plan for adjusting the pace of asset purchases.โ€13

What Is the Origin of Tapering?

Tapering can only occur after some kind of economic stimulus policies have already been put in place. A recent example of this kind of economic stimulus was the quantitative easing (QE) program implemented by the U.S. Fed in response to the financial crisis of 2007-08.

This QE program was intended to broaden the Fed's balance sheet by purchasing long-maturity bonds and other assets. The Fed's purchases drove down the supply available, which led to higher prices and lower yields (long-term interest rates).

Lower yields, in turn, lower the cost of borrowing. This was intended to make it easier for companies to fund new projects that generate new jobs. And theoretically, an increase in employment would lead to higher demand and economic growth.

After the financial crisis, the Fed used QE as one of its tools to stimulate the economy. Like all economic stimulus programs, QE policies are not intended to be permanent. Eventually, after the desired results of an economic stimulus program have been achieved, those policies must be gradually rescinded.

This is where the concept of tapering originates; if a central bank changes its operations too fast, it can push the economy into a recession. If a central bank never eases its economic stimulus policies, an undesirable effect could be an unwanted increase in inflation.

How Does Tapering Affect the Stock Market?

The QE policies implemented in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2007-08 had a favorable impact on the prices of stocks and bonds in the U.S. financial markets. As a result, investors were concerned about the impact of a potential reductionโ€”or tapering offโ€”of these favorable policies.

Since tapering is a theoretical possibilityโ€”it has never actually been successfully carried out by central banks that instituted an economic stimulus driven by QEโ€”it is hard to say exactly what impact tapering would have on the stock market. However, in the past, it was widely believed that once the Fed began the slow reversal of its economic stimulus, the stock market would react negatively.

What Is the Difference Between Tapering and Tightening?

In the context of monetary policy, tight, or contractionary, policy is a course of action undertaken by a central bankโ€”such as the Fed in the U.S.โ€”to slow down economic growth, constrict spending in an economy that is seen to be accelerating too quickly, or curb inflation when it is rising too fast.

The Fed tightens monetary policy by raising short-term interest rates through policy changes to the discount rate, also known as the federal funds rate. The Fed may also sell assets on the central bank's balance sheet to the market through open market operations (OMO).

Tightening monetary policy is the opposite of expansionary monetary policy. Expansionary, or loose, policy seeks to stimulate an economy by boosting demand through monetary and fiscal stimulus. QE is a tool of expansionary monetary policy.

So, tapering refers to a reversal of one aspect of a loose monetary policyโ€”QEโ€”while tightening refers to the implementation of tight monetary policy. The tapering off of asset purchases by the Fed can occur at the same time as a program of expansionary monetary policy. Even though both tapering and tightening are intended to have similar effects on market interest rates, they do not always happen concurrently.

Police are searching for suspects after they received reports of a shooting Tuesday outside the Walmart at the Waterworks Mall near Aspinwall.

 

The call came in shortly before 5:30 p.m., according to Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich.

 

The shooting occurred outside the store, where a vehicle was shot โ€œnumerousโ€ times Mr. Hissrich said.

 

The lone person inside the vehicle was unharmed. โ€œHow he escaped is what I would consider a miracle,โ€ Mr. Hissrich said.

 

The person was waiting in the vehicle for a relative who was inside the store.

 

Police believe there are four suspects. They originally thought one had run back into the store, but after clearing the building and the roof, officers did not locate the suspect.
