Police in New Mexico have issued a search warrant for Alec Baldwin's phone, after the fatal October 21 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his film, Rust.

The search warrant, requested by Santa Fe sheriffs, authorizes police to review all text messages and photos on the actor's iPhone, as well as any stored location data, as part of their investigation.

Judge David Segura, a magistrate in Santa Fe, approved the request on Thursday afternoon.

The investigator, Detective Alexandria Hancock - referred to in the warrant as the 'affiant' - said that they requested Baldwin hand over his phone, but the actor and his lawyers said that they require a warrant first.

'Affiant requested Alec's phone from him, as well as his attorney, and was instructed to acquire a warrant,' the warrant request states.

Hancock, in the request for the warrant, spelt out in detail what she wanted to obtain from Baldwin's phone - a list that included his contacts, call records, photos, videos, and text messages.

'Affiant is requesting a warrant for the seizure and search of Alec Baldwins' cell phone to search for any evidence relating to the death investigation of Halyna Hutchins,' the warrant request states.

'Affiant believes there may be evidence on the phone, due to individuals using cellular phones during and/or after the commission of crime(s).

'Such information, if it exists, may be material and relevant to this investigation.

'Affiant was also made aware there were several emails and text messages sent and received regarding the movie production 'Rust' in the course of interviews.'

According to the search warrant, Baldwin told police that he exchanged emails with the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, regarding what style of gun to use in the film.

They ultimately decided on a Colt .45 pistol.

Baldwin, 63, had been handed the antique pistol for the scene, and was told that it was 'cold' - not loaded.

He was rehearsing a scene in which he pulls out his gun and, in an interview with ABC on December 2, said that he never pulled the trigger, but the gun went off anyway.

Hutchins, a 42-year-old cinematographer, was shot and killed. The director of the film, Joel Souza, was shot in the shoulder and survived.

It is unclear why it has taken so long for New Mexico police to seize Baldwin's phone.

The actor has insisted that he has fully cooperated with the investigation.

In February 2006 Foreign Minister Alexander Downer signed an MOU with Clinton that if read up shows an Australian Government preparedness to spend up to $25M in matched spending with the Clinton Foundation in HIV/Aids aid work in China, Vietnam and Papua New Guinea over 4 years.

 

The Papua New Guinea funding agreement was signed in July with the Clinton Foundation. In August the Australian Government made a call for tenders or expressions of interest in the work already contracted to the Clinton Foundation.

 

The due date for tenders was 3 October 2006. By then the Clinton Foundation's sham incorporated entity in PNG was already 3 months old.

 

The post contract evaluation report, commissioned at a cost of $100,000 is damning of the contract and performance.

A Funding Agreement was signed in July 2006 between the government of Australia and CHAI. This outlined the terms and conditions of the arrangement between AusAID and CHAI for the implementation of CHAI in PNG. This agreement states that “the parties agree to monitor the Program against the Program Milestones and evaluate it against the Program Outcomes.” The defining document against which this occurs is the Program Workplan 2006- 2009. As noted above there is no stated objective/outcome in this document (or any documents subsequent to this) for the whole project (and associated indicators). Outcomes or objectives for each of the AoC are not articulated (thus no indicators provided). It is therefore impossible for this part of the agreement to be adhered to.

Thank you for the introduction and for inviting me here today.

It’s a real honour to have been asked to close this session on ‘Reimagining policy making for the fourth industrial revolution’.

We are in the midst of fundamental change, as the cost of storing and transmitting information plunges, perhaps faster than at any time since the invention of the printing press.

Technology is constantly changing how we live, how we work and how we vote and campaign.

Governments now have an opportunity to create an environment that supports digital businesses and creates appropriate norms and rules for the online world.

My case is that responding to populist concerns can’t be done by neglecting technology but only through harnessing it for the good of citizens.

I want to set out three proposals which I believe will apply to governments who want to do this successfully across the world.

  1. Adopt digital transformation

Firstly, Governments that put technology at the heart of all their interactions with citizens will thrive.

I worked at a tech business before I became an MP and then a minister. So I’ve long seen how technology can help provide solutions to long-standing policy issues.

In the last decade, getting services online was critical to government efficiency and serving citizens in a way that worked for them.

Our award winning Government Digital Service set the standard for usability online, which was then replicated by other governments across the world.

It transformed the relationship between citizen and state, whilst the digitisation of government has saved billions for taxpayers.

The lesson was loud and clear - put the user journey first and encourage people to adopt technology that will make their lives easier.

Now the task is the next generation of emerging technologies, like the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and Blockchain.

You could call it the fourth industrial revolution for Government and it will be those that adopt this digital technology that will thrive.

  1. Make smarter regulations

My second proposition is that economies that make sure regulations are fit for the digital age will also thrive.

Digital transformation cannot take place with outdated legislation, written when if you wanted to tackle ‘trolls’ you’d need to look underneath a bridge.

Just ask startups, who can often find their early years difficult due to compliance requirements written long before the digital age.

Modern businesses require modern regulation - and the UK is leading the way in embracing change.

Our Financial Conduct Authority has adopted what they call a ‘regulatory sandbox’. This allows businesses to test products with real consumers without them having to meet usual requirements for compliance.

This provides a space to do real world trials and engage regulators from the start of development.

It’s win-win; start-ups benefit from better market testing whilst consumers benefit from the safeguards that are built into new products. It is one of many reasons why the UK has now established itself as a FinTech world leader.

Our Information Commissioner is adopting the same approach for big data, and so is our Civil Aviation Authority for drones. The CAA has been engaging with private sector firms on autonomous drone testing and have even been praised by Amazon for their pioneering approach.

We’ve brought in a Regulators’ Pioneer Fund, to incentivise regulators to develop more approaches to support emerging technologies.

This is about innovation friendly regulation. Regulation must support innovation right across the board; this should be a mantra for any Government or regulator.

Only then can a country harness the opportunities of new technology and therefore thrive.

  1. Get ethics right

The third and final principle that I want to talk about is the importance of developing strong ethical frameworks.

Because societies that have strong ethical frameworks will thrive.

Digital technology is a powerful force for good. Combined with new technologies such as artificial intelligence, it is set to change society perhaps more than any previous technological revolution – growing the economy, making us more productive, and raising living standards.

But as we all know, alongside these new opportunities comes new challenges and risks.

The internet can be used to spread terrorist material; it can be a tool for abuse and bullying; and, it can undermine civil discourse, objective news and intellectual property.

The digital revolution has changed the way that people behave and interact.

Instead of a piecemeal response to each issue separately, our response is the Digital Charter, which the Prime Minister will be setting out in her speech later today.

This is a rolling programme of work to agree a consistent set of norms and rules for the online world and put them into practice.

In some cases this will be through shifting our expectations of behaviour; in others we may need new laws or regulations.

Our starting point will be that we will have the same rights and expect the same behaviour online as we do offline.

The Charter’s core purpose is to make the internet work for everyone – for citizens, businesses and society as a whole.

It will move the philosophy we apply to the Internet from libertarian to liberal values - to cherish freedom, but not the freedom to harm others.

The Charter brings together a broad, ongoing programme, with priority areas including protecting people from online harms, sorting out platform liability and leading on data ethics.

And I want us to practise what we preach about agile governance. It will be a ‘living’ document that sits online - and as technology changes, the Charter will evolve too.

Conclusion

The Governments that thrive will themselves harness the best new technologies.

The governments that thrive will themselves harness the best new technologies.

The economies that thrive will have innovation friendly regulations for the digital age.

And the societies that thrive will have strong ethical frameworks to make the internet a force for good.

Now our task is to get on with it and make it happen.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on Thursday held a meeting with the White House Covid response team to discuss the Omicron variant.

 

CDC COVID-19 Response Team published a weekly report last Friday where a vast majority of the patients infected with the Omicron variant identified in the US so far were fully vaccinated individuals.

 

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that of the 43 COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variants, 34 people were fully vaccinated. Of those fully vaccinated, 14 people had received their booster shots but five of those received their additional shots less than 14 days.

 

Only 8 people were unvaccinated who got infected with the Omicron variants and 1 person has status unknown.

 

Despite this report from the CDC showing that fully vaxxed people are getting infected with Omicron, Joe Biden claimed it is the unvaxxed who are at risk of severe illness from Omicron.

 

“For the unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death – for the unvaccinated,” Biden said adding that the unvaxxed are going to overwhelm hospitals.

 

He continued, “But there’s good news: If you are vaccinated and you have your booster shot, you’re protected from severe illness and death. Booster shots work!”

 

The first two shots didn’t work but this third one will (until Pfizer needs another boost for its stock price).

I'm aware of the 2001 'dark winter', but over time I have come to believe that some of the words and phrases dropped by Q were references to future events. Joe - and/or his puppetmasters may be referencing the 2001 one, but I believe Q was planting the seed so we would recognize things when they occur/are said.

My thought is that Joe is inviting everyone to a party which won't actually happen. The unvaccinated will weather winter just fine.

Anon was very young but some things remain crystal clear in my memory, I was an only child and around adults more than kids. The news was on a lot as Dad was flying a lot during this period. Rio in particular because of the Nazi Doctor and the Space capsule. I can't find a word about that capsule anywhere but that particular trip was to take "X"(Nation building, Saving the World for Democracy yada yada) and retrieve that capsule that splashed down off the coast of South America, traipse it around the Pan-Am games in a sort of "show and tell", then fly it to Smithsonian where it remains on permanent display.

I have the "loot" from that trip- 4 huge blankets from Ecuador, Vicuna (wtf is a Vicuna?), Alpaca, Llama and no idea about the fourth one. The Columbian coffee is long gone, they brought home a literal ton of it in 1 lb packages. I'm sure there's other loot laying around the shanty and I have all the flight records (along with everybody's SSNs- shouldn't have those prob)This man was a Reservist pilot and a WWII hero pilot, Robert (Bob) Shippee. Dad flew with another guy who survived the Bataan Death March. I heard excellent first hand accounts of these tales when they didn't catch me eavesdropping.

NASA’s Webb Telescope Will Have the Coolest Camera in Space

Set to launch on Dec. 22, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is the largest space observatory in history, and it has an equally gargantuan task: to collect infrared light from the distant corners of the cosmos, enabling scientists to probe the structures and origins of our universe and our place in it.

 

Many cosmic objects – including stars and planets, as well as the gas and dust from where they form – emit infrared light, sometimes called heat radiation. But so do most other warm objects, like toasters, humans, and electronics. That means Webb’s four infrared instruments can detect their own infrared glow. To reduce those emissions, the instruments have to be really cold – about 40 kelvins, or minus 388 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 233 degrees Celsius). But to operate properly, the detectors inside the mid-infrared instrument, or MIRI, will have to get even colder: less than 7 kelvins (minus 448 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 266 degrees Celsius).

 

That’s just a few degrees above absolute zero (0 kelvins) – the coldest temperature theoretically possible, though it’s never physically attainable because it represents the total absence of any heat. (MIRI is not, however, the coldest imaging instrument ever to operate in space.)

 

Temperature is essentially a measurement of how fast atoms are moving, and in addition to detecting their own infrared light, the Webb detectors can be trigged by their own thermal vibrations. MIRI detects light in a lower-energy range than the other three instruments. As a result, its detectors are even more sensitive to thermal vibrations. These unwanted signals are what astronomers refer to as “noise,” and they can overwhelm the faint signals that Webb is trying to detect.

 

After launch, Webb will unfold a tennis-court-size sunshield that will block MIRI and the other instruments from the Sun’s heat, allowing them to cool passively. Beginning about 77 days after launch, MIRI’s cryocooler will spend 19 days lowering the temperature of the instrument’s detectors to less than 7 kelvins.

 

“It’s relatively easy to cool something down to that temperature on Earth, typically for scientific or industrial applications,” said Konstantin Penanen, a cryocooler specialist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, which manages the MIRI instrument for NASA. “But those Earth-based systems are very bulky and energy inefficient. For a space observatory, we need a cooler that is physically compact, highly energy efficient, and it has to be highly reliable because we can’t go out and repair it. So those are the challenges we faced, and in that respect, I would say the MIRI cryocooler is certainly at the cutting edge.”

 

One of Webb’s big science goals will be to study the properties of the first generation of stars to form in the universe. Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera, or NIRCam instrument, will be able to detect these extremely distant objects, and MIRI will help scientists confirm that these faint sources of light are clusters of first-generation stars, rather than second-generation stars that form later as a galaxy evolves.

 

By peering through even thicker clouds of dust than the near-infrared instruments, MIRI will reveal the birthplaces of stars. It will also detect molecules that are common on Earth – like water, carbon dioxide, and methane, and those of rocky minerals like silicates – in cool environments around nearby stars, where planets may form. Near-infrared instruments are better at detecting these molecules as vapor in much hotter environments, while MIRI can see them as ices.

 

“By combining expertise from both the United States and Europe, we have developed MIRI as a powerful capability for Webb that will enable astronomers from all over the world to answer big questions about how stars, planets, and galaxies form and evolve,” said Gillian Wright, co-lead of the MIRI science team and the instrument’s European principal investigator at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC).

Search warrant issued for Alec Baldwin's phone after he reportedly refused to voluntarily turn it over to police

 

A search warrant was issued on Thursday for the phone of actor Alec Baldwin as investigators probed the circumstances of the lethal accidental shooting on the set of "Rust," Baldwin’s latest movie.

 

The latest development in the investigation was documented in a court filing from Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the movie set was located.

 

The Oct. 22 shooting took the life of 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded director 48-year-old director Joel Souza. Baldwin reportedly fired the fatal shot but later said in an interview that he didn't pull the trigger, and that the trigger wasn't pulled at all.

 

"The trigger wasn't pulled. I didn't pull the trigger. I would never point a gun at someone and pull the trigger on them, never," said Baldwin during the ABC News interview.

 

No charges have yet been filed in the case, but the investigation has not yet been completed.

 

Detective Alexandria Hancock said in an affidavit attached to the warrant for Baldwin's phone that officials asked the actor to voluntarily turn over the phone, but that his attorney told them to seek a warrant.

 

Prior to the shooting, several movie crew members walked off of the set in an apparent protest of inadequate safety standards because the production reportedly had a low budget. Baldwin was a producer of the movie as well as the star actor, which could expose him to legal liability in the shooting.

 

A separate report claimed that the gun used by Baldwin in the tragic shooting had been used for casual live ammunition target practice the morning of the incident.

 

Baldwin and his wife Hilaria Baldwin deactivated their Twitter accounts weeks after the incident.

 

When Baldwin was asked directly in an ABC News interview where the live ammunition came from, he said he did not know.

 

"I have no idea!" Baldwin blurted out. "Someone put a live bullet in a gun. A bullet that wasn't even supposed to be on the property."

The MIRI cryocooler uses helium gas – enough to fill about nine party balloons – to carry heat away from the instrument’s detectors. Two electrically powered compressors pump the helium through a tube that extends to where the detectors are located. The tube runs through a block of metal that is also attached to the detectors; the cooled helium absorbs excess heat from the metal block, which in turn keeps the detectors at their operational temperature below 7 kelvins. The warmed (but still quite cold) gas then returns to the compressors, where it dumps the excess heat, and the cycle begins again. Fundamentally, the system is similar to those used in home refrigerators and air conditioners.

 

The tubing that carries the helium is made of gold-coated stainless steel and measures less than one-tenth of an inch (2.5 millimeters) in diameter. It extends about 30 feet (10 meters) from the compressors, located in a region called the spacecraft bus, to MIRI’s detectors, located in the Optical Telescope Element, behind the observatory’s honeycomb-shaped primary mirror. Hardware called the Deployable Tower Assembly, or DTA, connects these two regions. When packed for launch, the DTA is compressed, sort of like a piston, to help fit the stowed observatory into the protective faring that rides atop the rocket. Once in space, the tower will extend to separate the room-temperature spacecraft bus from the much colder Optical Telescope Instrument, and to allow the sunshield and telescope to fully deploy.

Webb will solve mysteries in our solar system, look beyond to distant worlds around other stars, and probe the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it. US Blacklists Dozens of Chinese Biotech Firms That Aid Military, Including for ‘Brain-Control Weaponry’

 

The United States on Dec. 16 placed trade and investment restrictions on dozens of Chinese entities over their role in weaponizing biotechnology and other U.S. innovations to bolster the Chinese military and to further its human rights abuses.

 

Among the 34 Chinese entities targeted was the Academy of Military Medical Sciences—China’s top medical research institute run by the Chinese military—alongside its 11 research institutes, for aiding the Chinese military with biotechnology, including “purported brain-control weaponry,” the department stated without elaborating on the technology.

 

In 2018, the Academy of Military Medical Sciences applied for a patent for technology for collecting and processing brain signals, according to an online patent repository.

 

The Institute of Radiation and Radiation Medicine, one of its subsidiaries that was targeted, published a Chinese paper in 2012 discussing how to establish a data bank on the behavioral effects of “mind control assault weapons.”

 

Trade restrictions were also imposed on HMN Technologies, formerly a company under Chinese telecom provider Huawei as Huawei Marine, as well as Jiangsu Hengtong OpticElectric, Shanghai Aoshi Control Technology Co., and Zhongtian Technology Submarine Cable, for their role in acquiring U.S. items to modernize the Chinese military.

 

These bodies were put on the “entity list,” which bars U.S. companies from doing business with the sanctioned entity without a special license.

 

“The scientific pursuit of biotechnology and medical innovation can save lives. Unfortunately, the PRC [People’s Republic of China] is choosing to use these technologies to pursue control over its people and its repression of members of ethnic and religious minority groups,” Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said in a Dec. 16 statement.

 

“We cannot allow U.S. commodities, technologies, and software that support medical science and biotechnical innovation to be diverted toward uses contrary to U.S. national security.”

 

The trade restrictions followed a U.S. investment ban last week on Chinese artificial intelligence firm SenseTime, after it was discovered that its subsidiary had developed a facial recognition program targeting ethnic Uyghurs in Xinjiang, where Beijing is conducting an expansive campaign of repression.

Philadelphia Joins Other Democrat Cities, Will Require Vaccine Passports For Indoor Dining, Events

 

Philadelphia has joined the list of U.S. cities that require proof of vaccination for indoor dining and various other indoor events.

 

The mandate is set to go into effect starting January 3, 2022, according to a news release from the city on Monday.

 

Philadelphia residents will be required to show proof of vaccination in order to gain entry to restaurants, bars, museums, and other indoor entertainment events.

 

Philadelphia joins San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and nearby New York in requiring proof of vaccination for indoor events.

 

Establishments can accept negative Covid-19 tests taken within 24 hours of entry instead of proof of vaccination for the first two weeks of the mandate, but this exception will end on January 17, according to the news release.

 

Those wishing to enter these establishments must provide proof of having received two doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or one shot of the Johnson & Johnson injection.

 

The mandate does not apply to some other settings.

 

Among those settings are K-12 schools, hospitals, residential or healthcare facilities, grocery stores, convenience stores or Philadelphia International Airport.

 

“We recently announced a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for Philly establishments that sell food or drink for consumption onsite,” wrote Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney in a tweet.

Medical Examiner Reveals Cause of Death of 10 Victims Killed at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Fest

 

HOUSTON, TX – The Harris County Medical Examiner on Thursday released the cause of deaths of the victims killed in a crowd surge at Travis Scott’s Astroworld festival.

 

The Medical Examiner ruled “compression asphyxia” was the cause of deaths for all 10 victims and one victim, a 27-year-old man, had contributing factors of “combined toxic effects of cocaine, methamphetamine, and ethanol.”

 

The victims were identified as Ezra Blount, 9, from Houston; John Hilgert, 14, from Houston; Brianna Rodriguez, 16, from Houston; Jacob “Jake” Jurinek, 20, from Illinois; Franco Patiño, 21, from Illinois; Axel Acosta, 21, from Washington State; Bharti Shahani, 22, from Houston; Madison Dubiski, 23, from Cypress; Rodolfo “Rudy” Angel Peña, 23, from Laredo; and Danish Baig, 27, from Euless.

 

According to The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, compression asphyxia is a type of mechanical asphyxia, where respiration is prevented by external pressure on the body, at the same time inhibiting respiratory movements and compromising venous return from the head. It is usually due to heavy weight compressing the chest or the abdomen.

Washington — Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) today announced that the Select Committee has issued a subpoena to James P. “Phil” Waldron for records and testimony. Waldron was involved with efforts to promote fraud claims in the 2020 election.

 

Waldron reportedly claimed to have visited the White House on multiple occasions after the election, spoken to Mark Meadows “maybe 8 to 10 times,” and briefed several members of Congress on election fraud theories. He also publicly acknowledged contributing to the creation of a PowerPoint presentation that was given to, or described for, Republican Members of Congress on the eve of January 6th. According to reporting, he also participated in meetings at the Willard Hotel in early January 2021.

 

“Mr. Waldron reportedly played a role in promoting claims of election fraud and circulating potential strategies for challenging results of the 2020 election. He was also apparently in communication with officials in the Trump White House and in Congress discussing his theories in the weeks leading up to the January 6th attack. The document he reportedly provided to Administration officials and Members of Congress is an alarming blueprint for overturning a nationwide election. The Select Committee needs to hear from him about all these activities. We expect him to comply with the law and provide records and testimony as the Select Committee continues its work to get answers for the American people about January 6th, make legislative recommendations to strengthen our democracy, and help ensure nothing like that day ever happens again,” said Chairman Thompson.
