On Jan. 20, 2022, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) endorsed Jessica Cisneros in the Democratic primary for Texas’ 28th Congressional District. On Jan. 19, House Majority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) endorsed incumbent Henry Cuellar.

Cuellar, Tannya Benavides, and Cisneros are running in the primary election on March 1. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, the top-two vote-getters will advance to a primary runoff on May 24.

In the 2020 Democratic primary, Cuellar defeated Cisneros 51.8% to 48.2%. In that primary, Cisneros received endorsements from Justice Democrats, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Cuellar received endorsements from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Political commentators expect endorsements in this year’s race to continue to reflect this divide between the wings of the Democratic Party.

The general election will take place on Nov. 8, 2022. As of January 2022, the three race rating outlets considered the general either to be either Solid Democratic or Likely Democratic. The district is one of three in the state announced as targets by the National Republican Congressional Committee in February 2021. In the 2020 general election. Cuellar defeated Sandra Whitten (R) 58.3% to 39.0%.

Tennesse Democrat Jim Cooper (Nashville) becomes the 29th Democrat to announce he will not seek reelection (link). “Today I am announcing that I will not run for reelection to Congress. After 32 years in office, I will be leaving Congress next year.”

Elections to the U.S. House will be held on November 8, 2022. All 435 seats will be up for election. Special elections will be held to fill vacancies that occur in the 117th Congress.

Convoy opposing trucker vaccine mandate draws large crowd, concerns over comparison to Holocaust

A cross-Canada freedom convoy in opposition of a federal vaccine mandate for truckers arrived in Winnipeg to a large and boisterous crowd of hundreds of people but some were left disappointed when the convoy couldn’t stop Tuesday afternoon to greet them due to traffic safety reasons.

People and long lines of vehicles gathered on both shoulders of Highway 1 in Headingley, just west of Winnipeg to show support.

An RCMP officer on scene said police along with convoy organizers both decided it was unsafe for the group to stop because there were so many people along the road and there was no room for the trucks to stop in the Flying J truck stop which was supposed to serve as a pit stop for the rally.

“It’s just simply for safety,” said RCMP Sgt. Mark Hume, who was one of several officers on scene directing traffic on the highway near the truck stop.

The RCMP blocked the entrance to the truck stop and the convoy carried on east.

“There’s too many people gathered in there, too many vehicles,” Hume said. “We’ve talked to the organizer on the road and he said he can’t fit his semis in there.”

“It’s just the parking lot filled up. We had every intention of not stopping them but there’s too many people. We’re going to get people run over. They don’t think they can swing the corner with their semis and fit in there so they said they wanted to keep going through.”

RCMP officers were on scene throughout the rally and said in an email the convoy was 20 km long.

Ward Omchinksi, a supporter of the convoy and a former truck driver, was among many who stood in the bitter cold to greet the convoy.

“This mandate—what they’re doing here, this is affecting so many people,” Omchinski said. “They’re affecting the lives, they’re affecting the livelihood, they’re taking away jobs from people—it’s time to stop.”

The convoy has gained notoriety in the wake of the federal government’s vaccine mandate for truckers but an organizer of the pit stop to greet the travellers acknowledged the concern goes beyond just that one issue.

“We’re fighting for our human rights that our forefathers fought for and we want to make sure that we still have our freedoms and rights,” said Trevor Gatchell, who helped organize the pit stop at the Flying J where he expected the convoy to stop. “They’re not anti-vax, they’re not pro-vax it’s just about freedom of choice, freedom of rights that we’ve had.”

The convoy is on its way to Ottawa to oppose the mandate—a protest both the Canadian Trucking Alliance and Manitoba Trucking Association have distanced themselves from, calling the demonstrations ineffective and unsafe. The two groups have also said most truckers are vaccinated.

Some are also questioning some of the comparisons being made between the pandemic and the Holocaust by attendees at the rally. A blue pickup truck with a decal featuring a yellow star and the word freedom over top of it was observed at the rally Tuesday and at a similar rally in Winnipeg on Monday.

Belle Jarniewski, executive director of the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada, said in occupied countries Jews were forced to identify themselves by wearing a yellow star.

“Of course that made persecution, arrest much easier,” said Jarniewski, whose parents survived the Holocaust. “In a way to separate them and persecute them from the rest of society. That is not what is happening today with COVID restrictions.”

“It’s shameful. It is a distortion of history to compare the health restrictions that are in place at the moment to protect us, to keep us safe and alive for that matter to the labelling of Jews that resulted in the murder of six million men, women and children.”

Despite all of the opposition to Canada’s vaccine mandate for truckers, little has been said of new rules in the United States which require all travellers entering at a land border to be fully vaccinated both for essential and non-essential travel.

The rally was held amid public health measures in Manitoba which limit gatherings to 50 people in outdoor public places, however, gatherings are allowed if people remain in or near their vehicles to maintain two metres of separation from other attendees.

At times, groups of people gathered away from their vehicles.

Flying J, the company that runs the truck stop where the rally was held said it respects the rights of individuals to express their opinions.

“Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our team members and guests and we will continue to monitor the situation,” the company said.

However, most customers in the truck stop were observed unmasked despite a sign on the door requiring face coverings.

When asked if it was investigating the rally, the province would only say any charges or tickets will be noted in its upcoming enforcement bulletin.

The RCMP said Tuesday afternoon no tickets connected to the rally were handed out.

When Naval Radio Station Jim Creek was dedicated in 1953, it was recognized as the most powerful radio station in the world. Its advanced technology and broadcast strength were displayed in magazine publications such as Popular Science and Popular Mechanics. Today it is still among only a handful of radio stations capable of providing more than one million watts of power, allowing the U.S. Navy to communicate with ships, submarines and aircraft anywhere around the world.

Jim Creek valley was chosen as a strategic location by the Chief of Naval Operations, a site from which to transmit messages instantaneously to all naval operating units located throughout the world. The Jim Creek Navy installation, secluded in the Cascade Mountains of Washington, is located 55 miles northeast of Seattle. Nearly 5,000 acres encompass the radio station, along with 275 acres of old growth forest and recreational camp grounds open to Department of Defense military and civilian personnel, eligible dependents, and sponsored guests.

Access to the radio station is mostly restricted to 21 specially trained federal civilian personnel who keep it operating 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The facility is managed under the command of Naval Station Everett, while daily functions are controlled by the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station (NCTAMS) Pacific Command. A transmitter division conducts interior radio operations and a separate antenna division maintains nearly 100 miles of cable. Chief Warrant Officer Mark Gordon leads the department and oversees both units.

"Training is the backbone of maintaining this critical communication site. It ranges from tower rescue, electrical safety, and wildlife and natural resource preservation just to mention a few," he said.

Technicians who have prerequisite radio backgrounds receive additional training on the Jim Creek radio and antenna array. Antenna maintenance personnel often work at very high elevations on the towers and cables, depending on weather conditions.

"Our radio maintenance people have to know the older technology down to the component level," said Gordon. "That's why we offer in-house, on-the-job training on site."

Besides radio and tower maintenance, onsite training qualifications include safe climbing techniques and tree line maintenance near the transmitter site which must be kept clear of any potential interference with radio transmissions.

The radio's extensive antenna network spans 980 acres of the Jim Creek valley between Wheeler Mountain and Blue Mountain of the Cascade Mountain Range. The network is supported by 200-foot towers positioned approximately 3,000 feet high on opposite mountain crests. Six towers on each crest are connected by 10 antenna cables that zigzag across the valley. More than 360 miles of copper cable conductors make up the antenna system ground grid, covering 545 cleared acres.

The radio station's singular mission is to provide operational command and control communications for the Pacific Submarine Fleet. The team manages, operates, and maintains its AN/FRT-3 Very Low Frequency (VLF) Radio Transmitting System.

The transmitter operates using very low frequency sound waves with wavelengths 7 miles long. Its signals even reach submarines cruising below the ocean surface. A combination of high power and very low frequency makes the transmitter's broadcast far less affected by interference or jamming, compared to higher frequencies.

The radio transmitter and equipment are contained within a solid, windowless concrete building with a foundation that extends 35 feet below ground. The building is stabilized against earthquakes and copper sheath-lined throughout to shield it against electro-magnetic field disturbances.

One of the advantages to the location at Jim Creek is its proximity to a main power supply of great capacity, provided through a transmission line from Bonneville Dam.

Initial output of the radio transmitter was 1.2 million watts, which is far greater than most commercial radio stations that typically generate 100,000 watts of power. However, in order to conserve energy, the Navy does not use its maximum wattage unless absolutely necessary.

Within the radio station, a small visitor room marks its historic construction. Throughout the project engineers cleared 2,000 acres of land and built 12 miles of roads. The transmission equipment was manufactured at the RCA Victor plant in Camden, N. J., transported to Seattle aboard 27 freight cars, and then hauled by truck into the valley.

The completed project cost $14 million and went into operation on November 18, 1953.

The first radio message was tapped out in wireless code by Brig. General David Sarnoff, Chairman of the Board of RCA, as dictated by Admiral Robert B. Carney, Chief of Naval Operations.

The first reply came from the battleship USS Wisconsin, operating near Japan. Then responses came across the Western Pacific from aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, destroyer USS Floyd B. Parks, and submarine USS Bluegill. Following messages were sent from USS Sablefish in the North Atlantic and cruiser USS Pittsburgh in the South Atlantic. Aircraft carrier USS Tarawa responded from the Mediterranean and destroyer USS Charles S. Sperry from Caribbean waters.

As replies arrived, Admiral Robert Carney and General David Sarnoff plotted each unit location on a world map. The inaugural ceremony demonstrated the station's steady, rapid power as radio messages flashed to vessels in distant seas and shore stations on five continents.

Throughout its history, the 1950s-era radio station has remained a critical part of the Navy's modern mission. U.S. Navy ships across international waters continue to keep sea-lanes and trade routes flowing, provide assistance to allies, and protect national defense. Naval Radio Station Jim Creek remains in service to keep Navy sailors and units deployed around the world and around the clock, ready at all times.

Their twisted family tree shows there were four known generations who were living together, including four kids who were the great-grandchildren and grandchildren of Tim Colt.

His youngest daughter had children with her brother Charlie, a court heard.

DNA testing discovered 11 of those children were the product of parents who were closely related to each another, say the shocking reports.

Also living in the camp were a dozen second or third-generation family members who were legally adults so not required to undergo DNA testing.

Three of the late Tim Colt’s daughters have been dragged through court trials, assaulted in prison, and ostracised in communities due to their inbred children — the products of rape and sexual relations with their own father and siblings.

In one Colt trial, Tim Colt’s son Roderick was found guilty of raping his niece, who was also his half-sister.

The victim, Petra, was the biological child of Tim and Betty and was also attacked by her uncle Frank in the back seat of his car during a visit to the family farm in February 2010, for which he was convicted.

She told police back in 2013 that she had never gone to school, lived “in a cult” and that “all my aunts, uncles and cousins have all been sleeping together.”

The court heard how police intercepts of conversations between Martha and brother Charlie were brimming with “giggling and a degree of sexualized banter.”

Martha was given a two-year prison sentence after concealing the paternity of her kids, who were all proven to be the product of sexual relations with a biological relative.

Charlie Colt — who originally faced 27 charges — was found not guilty on two charges and acquitted, with the balance being withdrawn.

Tim Colt’s other two daughters were also convicted of perjury for attempting to hide the identity of their children’s fathers.

Betty was convicted of four counts of perjury, one of lying under oath and one of perverting the course of justice, and was jailed for 14 months.

Rhonda also received a 14-month intensive corrections order for perjury.

DNA testing would reveal all four women had children whose fathers were the mothers’ own father or brother, or a half brother, uncle, nephew or grandfather.

Of the original 80 charges originally leveled against eight Colts – including incest, child sexual abuse, indecency against a child and perjury – many were dropped.

Betty Colt was convicted of four counts of perjury, one of lying under oath and one of perverting the course of justice.

Although all eight family members were imprisoned after their 2018 arrest, only half have subsequently received custodial sentences.

Suppression orders had remained on the family’s interbreeding practices and rampant sexual interactions as eight family members were before the courts.

Three family members, Roderick, Martha and Derek Colt, filed notices of intention to appeal in 2020, all of which have since expired.

Some of the children had low-slung ears or misaligned eyes as a result of inbreeding and they look decades older than their actual age.

The horrific family history intertwined with incest only began to emerge nearly nine years ago after authorities discovered nearly 40 relatives living in inhumane conditions in an outback bush camp.

They lived amongst an uninsulated shed, old caravans and tents on a New South Wales bush block that was found in 2012.

Tim Colt died in 2009, nine years before eight of his family members were arrested.

The Colt children were sleeping in tents without running water, toilets, or electricity, had shuffling gait, and could not speak intelligible English.

They spread to remote parts of Australia after the NSW farm was raided.

The clan traveled around the country performing at town halls, festivals and country shows, and even produced records with album covers featuring the patriarch and three children.

One sickening album was even entitled a collection of family “love songs.”

Many of them have now reached adulthood and have shown marked improvement in personal hygiene and health — but they are still overshadowed by deprivations from their childhood.
