This all began as an internal Ukrainian crisis in November 2013, when President Viktor Yanukovych rejected a deal for greater integration with the European Union (here's why this was such a big deal), sparking mass protests, which Yanukovych attempted to put down violently. Russia backed Yanukovych in the crisis, while the US and Europe supported the protesters.

 

Since then, several big things have happened. In February, anti-government protests toppled the government and ran Yanukovych out of the country. Russia, trying to salvage its lost influence in Ukraine, invaded and annexed Crimea the next month. In April, pro-Russia separatist rebels began seizing territory in eastern Ukraine. The rebels shot down Malaysian Airlines flight 17 on July 17, killing 298 people, probably accidentally. Fighting between the rebels and the Ukrainian military intensified, the rebels started losing, and, in August, the Russian army overtly invaded eastern Ukraine to support the rebels. This has all brought the relationship between Russia and the West to its lowest point since the Cold War. Sanctions are pushing the Russian economy to the brink of recession, and more than 2,500 Ukrainians have been killed.

 

A lot of this comes down to Ukraine's centuries-long history of Russian domination. The country has been divided more or less evenly between Ukrainians who see Ukraine as part of Europe and those who see it as intrinsically linked to Russia. An internal political crisis over that disagreement may have been inevitable. Meanwhile, in Russia, Putin is pushing an imperial-revival, nationalist worldview that sees Ukraine as part of greater Russia โ€” and as the victim of ever-encroaching Western hostility.

 

It appears unlikely that Ukraine will get Crimea back. It remains unclear whether Russian forces will try to annex parts of eastern Ukraine as well, how the fighting there will end, and what this means for the future of Ukraine โ€” and for Putin's increasingly hostile but isolated Russia.

(Update 16:35ET): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made a number of statements to German media on Wednesday sure to get noticed in Moscow. First, he reiterated that he stands ready to make compromises with Russia in order to end the fighting, but still emphasized he's not willing to concede anything that would be seen as a "betrayal" by Ukrainians, though without explaining exactly what this would look like in terms of the Kremlin's specific proposals on the table.

 

He said to Bild TV, however, that "the other side must also be willing to make compromises - thatโ€™s why they are called compromises." He added when pressed further, "We canโ€™t talk about the details yet." So far there's been three rounds of meetings between the Ukraine-Russia delegations over a possible ceasefire.

 

And perhaps more provocatively Zelensky made comments on Russia's previous raising of its nuclear readiness level, calling Putin's threat of putting nuclear weapons use on the table but a mere "bluff". The response to Moscow's raised nuclear posture was given to German newspaper Die Zeit, and included the following:

 

Zelensky went on to say that Putinโ€™s nuclear threat "shows a weakness."

 

"You only threaten the use of nuclear weapons when nothing else is working," Zelensky said. "Every use of nuclear weapons means the end for all sides, not just for the person using them."

Amazon Suspends Retail Shipments To Russia & Belarus, Blocks Prime Video

 

Amazon has announced it has suspended most of its main services across Russia and Belarus, including access to Prime Video in Russia, and also confirming it will no longer ship retail orders to customers in both countries.

 

The US-based multinational e-commerce company has been backing away from services in Russia amid ratcheting pressure to do so, which also now includes stopping all new signups for Amazon Web Services. "Given the ongoing situation in Russia and Ukraine, weโ€™ve taken additional actions in the region," Amazon announced in a blog post.

 

"Weโ€™ve suspended shipment of retail products to customers based in Russia and Belarus, and we will no longer be accepting new Russia and Belarus-based AWS customers and Amazon third-party sellers," Amazon said.

 

"We are also suspending access to Prime Video for customers based in Russia, and we will no longer be taking orders for New World, which is the only video game we sell directly in Russia."

 

In the last week, and since Russia's invasion of Ukraine which started on Feb.24, Amazon has come under increased pressure from the public and politicians to suspend services in Russia as punishment.

 

Already, Apple, Microsoft and Google (Alphabet) had been among the first tech companies with the largest market capitalizations in the world to begin winding down services in Russia.

Shortly after the passage of the Flood Control Act, engineers began surveying the White River and its tributaries for locations to build a series of high, concrete dams. Despite the inundation of the majority of the countyโ€™s most productive farmland, the positive economic impact of the dam and lake was immediate. Cleburne Countyโ€™s population grew from 9,000 in 1960 to over 24,000 in 2000. Mother-of-two Amber Briggle, who has a transgender son called Max, 14, says her family is one of at least five families that are currently under investigation in wake of Abbott's February ruling targeting children who've received treatments including puberty blockers.

 

She says she was contacted by child protective services on February 28, with an investigator saying they'd be arriving at her home within 30 minutes. Briggle says she managed to meet with the social worker at her office, and schedule a visit to her home for March 3, which she says resulted in social workers compliment her and her husband's parenting.

 

Briggle, who has blogged prolifically about Max's transition, has said she supports the kind of hormone treatment Governor Greg Abbott wants to ban. She hasn't stipulated whether Max himself has undergone the treatment, but previously spoke of paying to change the gender marker on his birth certificate, and her support for such hormone treatments.

 

Briggle has also discussed attending the GENECSIS clinic for transgender people in the Dallas-Forth Worth area with Max, but did not detail any specific treatments he'd had. In 2016, the Briggles invited Texas State Attorney General Ken Paxton to dinner in the wake of a proposed bathroom bill that would have banned trans people using the restroom corresponding to their gender identity.

Several years before Kari Lake embraced the far right politics of President Donald Trump, she registered as a Democrat just as Barack Obamaโ€™s presidential ambitions got a big lift.

 

The Republican candidate for governor and former Phoenix TV news anchor made the switch the day after Obamaโ€™s stunning defeat of Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Iowa caucuses, the first test of the presidential primary season, according to information obtained by 12 News under a public records request.

 

Lake has branded herself as the most conservative Republican in the governorโ€™s race.

 

โ€œI grew up a conservative, and I am so blessed that my husband and children share those values,โ€ Lake said in a prepared statement to 12 News.

 

But a review of Lakeโ€™s voting history reveals that her support for Obama was part of a significant departure from her conservative roots: She left the Republican Party in 2006 and returned in 2012, as Obamaโ€™s fourth year in office began.

 

'Thought Party Lost Its Way'

Lakeโ€™s misgivings about the Republican Party began as early as 2004. She made her first campaign donation that year - to a Democratic presidential candidate.

 

In her statement to 12 News, Lake linked her registration shifts to her views on the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which began in the early 2000s.

Lakeโ€™s husband made three separate donations to Obama, totaling $1,500, under his own name, according to OpenSecrets.

 

A search for political donations on the Arizona Secretary of Stateโ€™s campaign finance web site turned up no donations by Lake since the start of online record-keeping in 2002.

Lakeโ€™s political contributions while working as a high-profile news anchor raise ethical questions.

 

Most journalism organizations have written guidelines that prohibit overt support for candidates, according to Rick Rodriguez, a professor of ethics at Arizona State Universityโ€™s Cronkite School of Journalism and former editor of The Sacramento Bee.

 

 

โ€œGiving money to support political campaigns is generally forbidden by most news organizations,โ€ Rodriguez said.

 

โ€œIn private you can cast your vote. But what (news organizations) are trying to do is avoid the appearance of conflict of interest. A donation raises questions about whether you can be impartial.โ€

 

Executives at Fox 10 did not respond to requests for comment.

 

Lake is part of a crowded field in the 2022 Republican primary for governor.

 

Former Congressman and 2002 GOP candidate for governor Matt Salmon entered the race Wednesday. He joins state Treasurer Kimberly Yee and Arizona Board of Regents member Karrin Taylor Robson.

 

On the Democratic side, the primary candidates are Secretary of State Katie Hobbs and Marco Lopez, a business consultant who is a former Nogales mayor and U.S. Customs and Border Protection official.

 

The August 2022 primaries are 14 months away.

Starting on September 20, 1950 and continuing until September 27, the U.S. Navy released the two types of bacteria from a ship off the shore of San Francisco, believing them to be harmless to humans. Based on results from monitoring equipment at 43 locations around the city, the Army determined that San Francisco had received enough of a dose for nearly all of the city's 800,000 residents to inhale at least 5,000 of the particles.[5][6][7][8]

 

Illnesses

 

On October 11, 1950, eleven residents checked into Stanford Hospital for very rare, serious urinary tract infections. Although ten residents recovered, one patient, Edward J. Nevin, died three weeks later. None of the other hospitals in the city reported similar spikes in cases, and all 11 victims had urinary-tract infections following medical procedures, suggesting that the source of their infections lay inside the hospital.[5] Cases of pneumonia in San Francisco also increased after Serratia marcescens was released, though a causal relation has not been conclusively established.[9][10] The bacterium was also combined with phenol and an anthrax simulant and sprayed across south Dorset by US and UK military scientists as part of the DICE trials that ran from 1971 to 1975.[5][11]

 

The urinary tract outbreak was so unusual that the Stanford doctors wrote it up for a medical journal.[7]

 

There was no evidence that the Army had alerted health authorities before it blanketed the region with bacteria. Doctors later wondered whether the experiment might be responsible for heart valve infections around the same time as well as serious infections seen among intravenous drug users in the 1960s and 1970s.[12]

Lawsuit

 

In 1981, Nevin's surviving family members filed suit against the federal government, alleging negligence and responsibility for the death of Edward J. Nevin, as well as financial and emotional harm caused to Mr. Nevin's wife from the medical costs.

 

The lower court ruled against them primarily because the bacteria used in the test was unproven to be responsible for Mr. Nevin's death. The Nevin family appealed the suit all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which declined to overturn lower court judgments.[5][14][15][16]

 

Similar biological warfare tests

 

In the Senate subcommittee hearings in 1977, the Army revealed:

 

Between 1949 and 1969, open-air tests of biological agents were conducted 239 times. In 80 of those experiments, the Army said it used live bacteria that its researchers at the time thought were harmless. In the others, it used inert chemicals to simulate bacteria.

In the 1950s, army researchers dispersed Serratia on Panama City and Key West Florida with no known illnesses resulting.

In the 1950s, army researchers dispersed zinc cadmium sulfide (now a known cancer-causing agent) over Minnesota and other Midwestern states to see how far they would spread in the atmosphere. The particles were detected more than 1,000 miles away in New York state.

Bacillus globigii, never shown to be harmful to people, was released in San Francisco, New York, Washington, D.C., and along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, among other places.

In New York, military researchers in 1966 spread Bacillus subtilis variant Niger, also believed to be harmless, in the subway system by dropping lightbulbs filled with the bacteria onto tracks in stations in midtown Manhattan. The bacteria were carried for miles throughout the subway system. Army officials concluded in a January 1968 report that: "Similar covert attacks with a pathogenic disease-causing agent during peak traffic periods could be expected to expose large numbers of people to infection and subsequent illness or death."

In a May 1965 secret release of Bacillus globigii at Washington's National Airport and its Greyhound Lines bus terminal, more than 130 passengers were exposed to the bacteria traveling to 39 cities in seven states in the two weeks following the mock attack.[5]

The problem I have with "covid" is that the tools they were using to track and diagnose it are simply not capable of the selectivity most believe. There is a reason I insist on electron micrographs of a virus in isolation and proof that the isolated agent is infectious and causes pathosis in healthy people. We have deviated from this very costly set of proofs and run off into the alphabet soup of our microbiome with a list of words for the scavenger hunt. Then we treat matches like they are unique discoveries and sequence our imagination within the statistical returns.

 

Yes, I got sick in february of 2020 with something rather intense. As did most of my department. It was as bad as many of us had gotten sick in some time. They tested psoitive for influenza A, and B. Was it covid? Could have been. Could also be that we just got hit with a bad run of flu.

 

I haven't gotten sick since. Still have a scar on my lip where a spot that rubbed raw got infected and pitted/scabbed.

I can engage the discussion on any front - I am still not convinced they know their ass from applesauce as far as what was infecting whom. I can, however, have a discussion about receptors, cytokine signalling cascades, and how to target those for action. Suffice to say that I am of the mind that vaccines will be seen as crude and inefficient in the future. The possible viruses are nearly infinite. The list of antigens and cytokines is finite. Far more efficient to take control of our cells than to try and target things yet to exist.

American Oil Drillers: Democrat Policies Blocking Energy Production

 

Oil drillers say they are working to fill the recent void in the oil market but are hampered by Democrat policies.

 

While gas prices rose about one dollar before the run-up to the Ukrainian war and 70 cents since the invasion of Ukraine, President Biden has blamed the oil industry for not producing enough oil to shore up the oil crisis from the war. He claims American drillers are not utilizing 9,000 leases on private land.

 

But American shale drillers have pushed back by suggesting Bidenโ€™s supply chain woes and woke private, and public investment strategies have dramatically slowed swift production.

 

โ€œGetting lenders to choke off money to fossil fuel companies is the next needed move for the industry to address the material risks that the coal, oil and gas industry faces,โ€ Leslie Samuelrich, president at investment advisory firm Green Century Capital Management, said back April about industryโ€™s future lending decisions.

 

Samuelrichโ€™s analysis has come true, which is greatly reducing the feasibility of new oil projects on the reported 9,000 private land leases.

 

 

โ€œTen years ago, the โ€˜cost of capitalโ€™ for developing oil and gas as compared to renewable projects was pretty much the same, falling consistently between 8% and 10%. But not anymore,โ€ Bloomberg reported in November. Now the cost of capital is reportedly 20 percent for long-cycle developments.

 

Bidenโ€™s attack on private financing is only one angle of assault. In August, a Biden changed global bank financing rules that make it more difficult for drillers to find investors. The policy is intended to accelerate renewable energy investment rather than fossil fuel investment, thereby greatly defunding oil production.

 

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that oil drillers believe the โ€œflight of capital from the fossil-fuel industry in recent years has left U.S. oil patches without enough fracking equipment to bring a ton of new wells online, and that a resurgence of go-go drilling would deplete companiesโ€™ most valuable drilling locationsโ€:

 

Lendersโ€”who have become more wary of funding oil-related ventures as environmental, social and governance ideas catch on in financial circlesโ€”are still unwilling to give money to most of the nationโ€™s crop of oil-field service companies, or to smaller oil producers that want to expand their operations, executives and analysts said. That has left small but instrumental players short of the financing they need to repair fracking equipment sidelined during the start of the pandemic, or invest in building drill bits, drilling rigs and blowout preventers.

 

Data suggests the drillers are correct. American oil production is down drastically from 2019 before the pandemic. In 2022, oil production is 12 million barrels or 8 percent less than in 2019.

I don't disagree. The problem with playing definition semantics with what we have now called the novel coronavirus 2019, COVID-19, China Flu, WuFlu, or just plain Rona, could be argued about calling any illness "the flu" following the worldwide pandemic deemed Spanish Flu. I'm afraid it will all be the Rona in a decade. It doesn't change the fact in final numbers though. The Spanish Flu killed WAY more people than an average seasonal "flu" and the COVID-19 killed WAY more than the average cold/flu. All politics and outright murders aside, the math says we have a nasty virus. I never thought I would see so much dissent from saying I have COVID. Perhaps next time I should say I am ill with a conspiracy theory.

I've lurked Anon. I get that some Anons have trust issues when it comes to narrative subject matter, but there exists an illness that causes matter of fact increase in deaths. The world calls it COVID. The Spanish Influenza wasn't Spanish. That doesn't mean it didn't happen.
