Well, that was one fucking, interesting read and it wasn't hard to understand if you have been paying attention lately. All of this sets the stage for the Great Reset and moving everything to a "digital currency". A lot of this is purposeful and a lot of it is ineptitude. The people really love this man and we all know that he loves us, this country, our Constitution and our way of life. I have doubts sometimes. Maersk Plans to Sell Investment in Russian Terminal Operator

 

A.P. Moller โ€“ Maersk is joining the long list of western companies seeking to divest investments in Russia. In a brief statement confirmed by Global Ports Group, Maersk said it wished to divest its minority interest in Russiaโ€™s largest terminal operator. When the investment was made in 2012, it was highlighted as the largest foreign direct investment in the Russian maritime sector.

 

APM Terminals joins major western brands ranging from McDonaldโ€™s, Starbucks, and Coca-Cola that all said they would suspend their operations in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. Earlier this week Shell announced that it was closing operations in Russia and would seek to divest its interests following other majors in the oil and gas industry including BP which also announced that it would suspend its investments. Maersk was one of the first shipping companies to announce it would suspend bookings to Russia, but the line continues to send ships to Russian ports.

 

In 20212, APM Terminals agreed to acquire a 37.5 percent stake in Global Port from Transportation Investments Holding Limited, one of Russiaโ€™s largest privately owned transportation groups, and jointly the two companies were managing Global Ports.The company operates six terminals in Russia, including the Saint Petersburg container terminal, which is one of the largest in Russia, as well as terminals in Finland. The groupโ€™s main business is container handling, having moved 1.6 million TEU in 2021, as well as other types of cargo, including bulk, cars, and other types of roll-on roll-off cargo. Reuters at the time of the acquisition estimated its value at $860 million.

 

According to Global Ports, APM Terminals will continue to be represented on the companyโ€™s board of directors and fulfill its obligations until the divestment can be completed. Maersk, like the other western companies, may face challenges in actually completing the divestment. Russia has been rumored to be planning to bar international companies from selling their investments. Global Portsโ€™ shares are traded on the London Stock Exchange but trading has been suspended.

 

At the same time, while Maersk announced it was ceasing all future bookings for Russian cargo, the shipping giant is continuing to send vessels to Russian ports including Saint Petersburg. Later today, the 3,600 TEU Vayenga Maersk was due to arrive at the Baltic port inbound from Felixstowe in the UK. Maersk is not alone in continuing service as earlier today the CMA CGM Neva departed Saint Petersburg bound for Wilhelmshaven in Germany.

 

According to the companies, they are working to complete prior bookings and they expectto suspend service once the backlogs have been completed both for inbound bookings and exports from Russia.

Ukraine Reports Loss of U.S.-Built Patrol Boat by Russian Missile

 

A U.S.-built patrol boat that had been transferred from the U.S. Coast Guard to the Ukrainian Navy as part of the efforts to build up its sea forces is reported to be among the causalities. In 2018, the then 30-year-old vessel was transferred to Ukraine along with another vessel from the Island Class as part of five vessels sent from the United States to Ukraine to increase the countryโ€™s naval defenses.

 

The patrol boat named Sloviansk was lost according to the mayor of the port city of Yuzhny, located west of Odesa, during reconnaissance and protection missions for the ports of Odesa and to the south in the Black Sea. Several sailors, or possibly the entire crew aboard, are reported missing. The vessel is believed to have been sunk, possibly as early as March 3, as Russia was preparing for the expected amphibious assault on Odesa. Russian forces were believed to be targeting possible opposition that could attack during the landing, which now appears to have been postponed.

 

โ€œAn airstrike by an enemy aircraft of the Russian Federation on the patrol boat Sloviansk was inflicted. The patrol boat sank as a result of an air-to-ground cruise missile,โ€ said Volodymyr Novatsky expressing condolences to the families of the victims.

 

It is believed that this is thefirst confirmed loss in combat of a ship of the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The fate of the other Island Class patrol boats is unknownโ€ฆ

 

The loss of the patrol ship comes as another blow to the small Ukrainian Navy. Days earlier the Navy also announced the loss of its flagship, although it said that was a conscious decision to prevent the vessel from falling into Russian hands. The 3,100 ton frigate Hetman Sahaidachny, was reportedly scuttled while it was under repairs in the port city of Mykolaiv.

 

Ukraineโ€™s defense minister Oleksiy Reznikov reported ordering the scuttling of the frigate, saying it was a โ€œtough decision for a brave warrior and the whole team. We will build a new fleet, modern and powerful. The main thing now is to resist,โ€ he added

Videographer Brent Renaud, a well-known war journalist and former New York Times correspondent, was shot dead on Sunday in Irpen, Kiev Region Police Chief Andrei Nebytov has said. The New York Times has stated the journalist was not on assignment for it.

 

The circumstances surrounding Renaudโ€™s death are unclear, but the city of Irpen has been the scene of heavy fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces in recent days.

 

Renaud โ€œpaid his life for trying to highlight the aggressor's ingenuity, cruelty and ruthlessness,โ€ Nebytov wrote on Facebook on Sunday, referring to the Russian military. In another post shortly afterwards, Nebytov shared an image of a bloodied corpse with a bullet wound near the ear, presumably that of Renaud.

 

Situated on the outskirts of Kiev, Irpen has been the scene of intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces for several days, and it is unclear how or even if Renaud got caught in the middle. Likewise,Nebytov is the only official to have blamed Russia for the shooting.

 

In addition to the 51-year-old reporter's killing, two more correspondents were injured, Nebytov said, adding that they were โ€œrescued from the sceneโ€ and taken to a hospital in Kiev.

 

At the time of writing, the White House had not confirmed reports of Renaudโ€™s death, and was consulting with Kiev, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said shortly afterwards.

 

Renaud was a well-known war correspondent and had reported from conflict zones in the Middle East and Latin America. Situated on the outskirts of Kiev, Irpen has been the scene of intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces for several days, and it is unclear how or even if Renaud got caught in the middle. Likewise, Nebytov is the only official to have blamed Russia for the shooting.

 

An unverified video shared by Italian journalist Annalisa Camilli purportedly shows one of Renaudโ€™s companions, who identifies himself as โ€œJuan,โ€ lying on a hospital bed. โ€œJuanโ€ tells Camilli that the journalists were taken past a checkpoint by someone who offered them a ride, when their car was fired upon.

According to the man, the driver turned around, but Renaud was shot in the neck and left behind as the man was taken to hospital, possibly in an ambulance.The man did not say who did the shooting, or whether their ride past the checkpoint was in a civilian or military vehicle.

 

It is unclear whether anyone else was injured, as Nebytov originally stated that โ€œtwo more correspondentsโ€ had been hit, yet the man named only himself and Renaud as traveling in the vehicle.

 

Several international journalists were nearby at the time of the shooting, and Bild journalist Paul Ronzheimer shared footage apparently showing the man being evacuated on a stretcher by several men in Ukrainian military and emergency services uniforms.

How Russia's neighbors react to the war in Ukraine

 

People in Central Asian countries neighboring Russia are trying to decide what they think about the offensive in Ukraine โ€“ not without outside โ€˜helpโ€™

 

A new wave of anti-war protests has swept through Kazakhstan. The activists blame Russia for the aggression and compare Putin to Hitler. Ukraine recalled its ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, because Kiev decided that the country supported the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Several forces are at work in the political and information space, as they try to undermine support for Russia in the region โ€“ this also happens in countries like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

 

Kyrgyzstanโ€™s President Sadyr Japarov did express support for Russiaโ€™s actions in Ukraine in a phone conversation with President Vladimir Putin on February 26. The official record stated, โ€œSadyr Japarov emphasized Kievโ€™s responsibility for the failure of the Minsk agreements and expressed support for Russiaโ€™s decisive actions aimed at defending the Donbass people.โ€

 

The message is clear, and Japarov shared these ideas even before the operation. He wrote that the reason things got tense in Ukraine was the violation of the Minsk agreements. He welcomed Russiaโ€™s recognition of the DPR and LPR as independent states as โ€œpossibly the last measure that had to be taken in order to defend the peopleโ€ and โ€œMoscowโ€™s sovereign right.โ€

 

According to media reports, Uzbekistanโ€™s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev also said that he โ€œunderstoodโ€ Russiaโ€™s actions in Ukraine during his talks with Putin. The presidentโ€™s press office didnโ€™t deny the fact that such statements had been made at the top level meeting, but refused to give any further information, claiming that the republicโ€™s position was โ€œbalanced and neutral.โ€

 

Kazakhstanโ€™s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was very careful with his assessments โ€“ he had been a career diplomat for many years after all. He didnโ€™t openly support Moscow, but in his statement, he reiterated the position of the Russian Foreign Ministry, โ€œWe are staying true to the indivisible Eurasian security principle.โ€

 

Tokayev also criticized Ukraineโ€™s refusal to follow through on the Minsk agreements, which resulted in the military operation, โ€œThe Minsk agreements remained on paper, and this led to the military action in Ukraine.โ€ (In early February, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that he disagreed with some of the provisions in the document).

 

The US is clearly involved in the efforts to undermine support for Moscow in the region. On February 28, the State Department held a special conference with these countries, where some very strong anti-Russia statements were made. Moscowโ€™s actions were labeled as a โ€œpremeditated and unfounded invasion.โ€

 

Not just presidents

Pro-Russian statements made by the leaders of Central Asian states reflect the views of political, media, and professional elites, which in turn impacts foreign policy.

 

Soon after the ambassador was recalled, Akipress, the republicโ€™s largest news agency, published an article by professor Jumagul Saadanbekov, the former president of the national diplomatic academy and ambassador to Ukraine, who is one of the leading experts on foreign policy in Kyrgyzstan.

 

In his article, Saadanbekov outlined Bishkekโ€™s stance on the Ukrainian crisis, saying that, โ€œIn March 2021, Ukraine adopted a new military strategy. This document is almost entirely focused on a standoff with Russia and aims to drag the US and the West into a conflict with Russia. It envisages setting up underground terrorist organizations in Crimea and the Donbass, while the international community supports Ukraine, including in the military sense, in its geopolitical showdown with Russia. Itโ€™s clear that this could only mean preparation for military action against Russia.And so the Washington-led Ukraine simply forced Russia to start this warโ€โ€ฆ

Dozens killed and injured in Russian strikes on military base, Kiev says

 

More than 30 missiles were launched overnight, according to the local military administration

 

At least 35 people were killed and more than 130 injured during overnight shelling at a military training ground outside the western Ukrainian city of Lvov, the head of the regional military administration Maxim Kozitsky has claimed.

 

The Yavorsky military range, also known as the International Center for Peacekeeping and Security, islocated about 15 miles from Poland, with some reports suggesting the blast could be felt across the border. Russian military authorities have yet to comment on or confirm the strike.

 

According to Kozitsky, by noon on Sunday all fires on the centerโ€™s territory had been extinguished, and explosives technicians and other specialists were inspecting the site.

 

โ€œI must say that, unfortunately, that we lost more heroes: 35 people died as a result of the shelling of thepeacekeeping and security center. Another 134 with injuries of varying severity have been hospitalized,โ€ Kozitsky wrote on Telegram.

 

He claimed that the airstrike was โ€œcarried out from the Black and Azov Seasโ€ with aircraft taking off from Saratov airport.

 

โ€œIn total, the occupiers fired more than 30 missiles. The Ukrainian air defense system responded,โ€ Kozitsky said, also claiming that Ukrainian forces had โ€œshot down some of the missiles in the air.โ€

 

Kozitsky repeated Ukraineโ€™s request for NATO โ€œto close the sky over Ukraineโ€ by implementing a no-fly zone, or alternatively, to provide the country with military planes.

 

He stressed that with shelling โ€œapproaching the borders of NATO countries,โ€ this is the โ€œcrucial momentโ€ to fulfill Kievโ€™s request. NATO has so far refused to impose a no-fly zone, saying it would lead to direct confrontation with Moscow.

 

Earlier on Sunday, Ukraineโ€™s Minister of Defense Alexey Reznikov said there were someforeign instructors working at the center. He called the shelling a โ€œterrorist attackโ€ on peace and security near the EU-NATO border.

 

Moscow launched a large-scale assault against its neighbor on February 24 with a stated goal of โ€œdemilitarizingโ€ and โ€œdenazifyingโ€ Ukraine in order to protect the Donbass republics and to defend Russiaโ€™s own security amid NATOโ€™s expansion eastwards.

 

The Russian military has claimed it is only targeting military installations and accused Ukrainian nationalists of โ€œusing civilians as coverโ€ and human shields.

 

Kiev considers the attack unprovoked and unjustified and Western nations implemented unprecedented sanctions on Moscow in the wake of the attack.

[In 2017], the Ukraineโ€™s parliament (Verkhovna Rada) voted to outlaw the St Georgeโ€™s Ribbon, an emblem often worn to commemorate those who liberated the Soviet Union from Hitlerโ€™s rule. Up to seven million Ukrainian infantrymen comprised part of the Red Army during their struggle against Nazi Germany, as Hitler was finally broken in the east.

 

By winter 1943, the once apparently indestructible Wehrmacht was spinning on its tail, their officers with their heads turning about westward, as they gradually retreated towards the German frontiers. Come the spring of 1945, about 2.5 million dead Ukrainian soldiers lay strewn across central and eastern Europe, many of their bodies never to be recovered.

 

The decision by an increasingly far-right Ukrainian parliament to ban remembrance symbols which commemorate those who fought against the Third Reich is, therefore, a desecration of their memory. It is an attempt to wash over that awful suffering the Ukrainian state endured during the Nazi occupation, with Hitler outlining plans to turn the country into a servile colony of Germanic dominion.

 

Over elapsing timefrom the February 2014 US-instituted โ€œpro-democracy revolutionโ€, an ever expanding group of neo-Nazis has been elected to office.Notable amid these menacing figures is the far-right military commander Yuriy Bereza (image on the right), an MP since November 2014 who was elected under the title โ€œPeopleโ€™s Deputy of Ukraineโ€.

 

Bereza is a member of fascist-infiltrated party, Peopleโ€™s Front, which counts among its prominent MPs the neo-Nazi Andriy Parubiy, Chairman of the Ukrainian parliament since April 2016. In the early 1990s, Parubiy co-founded the far-right Social-National Party of Ukraine with fellow extremist Oleh Tyahnybok, that later became known as the Svoboda (Freedom) party.

 

When, in May 2017, a few of the Ukraineโ€™s conscientious MPs objected to moves in banning the St Georgeโ€™s Ribbon, Bereza roared down from his parliamentary seat that he would like toโ€œgrab a machine gun and shoot those bast*rdsโ€. Bereza cuts an intimidating figure. He is a tall man routinely clad in full army fatigues, with tightly-cropped hair, broad shoulders and stern expression.

 

Bereza is familiar with the use of arms. Since April 2014, he has held the position of Dnipro Battalion leader: A fascist-linked unit which has fought Moscow-backed separatists in eastern Ukrainian regions such as the Donetsk Oblast, an area which rests directly upon Russiaโ€™s south-western border, and is a mere 400 miles from Volgograd (Stalingrad). The Dnipro Battalion is subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, which among other things implements state policy.

 

Bereza and his regiment were involved in fighting during the autumn 2014 Battle of Ilovaisk, ending in decisive victory for the Moscow-supported Donetsk Peopleโ€™s Republic.

 

Berezaโ€™s cause has drawn sympathy and backing from commercial media outlets like the Los Angeles Times, which wrote how his unit โ€œsurvived on grass and rainwater as they braved five days of incessant sniper fireโ€. The LA Times also quotes Bereza and, despite a heightened risk of nuclear war, the newspaper calls for increased funding to be granted to the far-right battalions.

 

Over Christmas 2014,Berezaโ€™s regiment was accused of war crimes by human rights groups, such as the deliberate starvation of Ukrainian civilians. His battalion has received more than $10 million of financial support from billionaire businessmanIhor Kolomoyskyi. There are photographs of the oligarch shaking hands amiably with Bereza in spring 2014.

 

Kolomoyskyihas provided critical support too for Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukraineโ€™s president-elect, by guaranteeing him widespread exposure on television networks that the tycoon owns. Kolomoyskyi is one of the most powerful and affluent Ukrainians in the world. His corporate influence extends from the Caucasus of Eurasiato the Appalachian mountains of North America.

Melnychuk was stripped of his parliamentary immunity in June 2015.

 

There are further far-right Ukrainian MPs embedded in seemingly respectable parties like the Peopleโ€™s Front. Among them is Ihor Lapin, a multi-decorated militant commander who comprised part of the Aidar Battalion, which draped Nazi-style insignia over its armoured vehicles.

12 ballistic missiles hit Iraq's Kurdish regional capital

 

BAGHDAD, March 13 (Xinhua) โ€“ Twelve ballistic missiles launched from outside Iraq struck the country's northern Kurdish regional capital Erbil on Sunday, the regional government said.

 

The attack occurred at 1:00 a.m. (2200 GMT Saturday) when "12 long-range ballistic missiles were fired from the east outside the Iraqi borders towards the new building of the U.S. consulate in Erbil and surrounding residential areas, as well as near the building of Kurdistan 24 TV Channel," the regional Interior Ministry said in a statement.

 

The attack resulted in the wounding of a civilian, along with damage to several buildings, the statement said, adding that the Kurdish security forces are investigating the incident, with more details to be released later.

 

Meanwhile, a statement by the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command confirmed the attacks on Erbil, saying that "their perpetrators will receive their just punishment."

 

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack on the relatively peaceful Kurdistan region.

 

U.S. forces stationed at Erbil's international airport complex have in the past come under fire from rockets and booby-trapped drones by unknown militias.

Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov owns four coal mining operations sprinkled across Appalachia that received loans intended to help small businesses keep workers on payroll during the pandemic. They received a total of $21 million in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, according to a statement Akhmetovโ€™s company provided to the Project On Government Oversight (POGO).

 

Far from mom-and-pop shops, many of which have reported difficulty obtaining these PPP loans, the oligarchโ€™s United Coal Company and its subsidiaries had estimated sales of $1.5 billion last year. They export high-grade coal to Akhmetovโ€™s overseas steel-making empire, and occupy a segment of the coal industry that is reportedly still strong during the pandemic.

 

As a growing body of evidence shows that numerous loans went to companies that donโ€™t seem to truly need them, the firms controlled by Akhmetovโ€”who reportedly owns two of the planetโ€™s most expensive homes and who had a cameo in Special Counsel Robert Muellerโ€™s report last yearโ€”appear to fit the mold of the less deserving.

 

โ€œStrategic Decisionโ€

 

United Coal is among at least 27 companies with estimated revenues exceeding $1 billion last year that received Paycheck Protection Program loans.United Coal and its subsidiariesโ€”Pocahontas Coal, Carter Roag Coal, and Wellmore Energyโ€”reported that they used the loans to help retain a total of 1,044 employees, according to federal data. The company also told POGO the loans were used for rent and utilities.

 

โ€œThis Deadly Circleโ€

 

Companies owned by two other Ukrainian oligarchs also obtained Paycheck Protection Program loans, but, unlike Akhmetovโ€™s operations, the Justice Department has accused those entities of being โ€œshell companies.โ€

 

The companies are owned by the oligarchs Ihor Kolomoisky and Gennadiy Boholiubov,according to a recent Justice Department court filing, and were used in โ€œan international conspiracy to launder money embezzled and fraudulently obtainedโ€ from one of Ukraineโ€™s largest banks. Kolomoiskyโ€™s attorney emailed the Washington Post, โ€œMr. Kolomoisky emphatically denies the allegations in the complaints filed by the Department of Justice.โ€ POGO could not identify Boholiubovโ€™s attorney before publication.

 

At least five of the companies allegedly involved in the conspiracy received Paycheck Protection Program loans.

 

It appears to have been within the bounds of the Paycheck Protection Program for these companies, which are the subjects of a federal money laundering lawsuit, to receive loans. Federal loan rules make those under criminal indictment ineligible, but the companies havenโ€™t been indicted.

Iranโ€™s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for a dozen ballistic missiles that struck Iraqโ€™s northern Kurdish regional capital of Irbil in the early hours of Sunday, Iranโ€™s state media reported, adding that the attack was against Israeli โ€œstrategic centersโ€ in Irbil.

 

The missile attack comes as talks to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal face the prospect of collapse after a last-minute Russian demand forced world powers to pause negotiations for an undetermined time despite having a largely completed text.

 

The missiles, which targeted the U.S. consulateโ€™s new building, caused only material damage and one civilian was injured, the Kurdish interior ministry said. An Iraqi security official told Reuters that the missiles were manufactured in Iran.

 

โ€œAny repetition of attacks by Israel will be met with a harsh, decisive and destructive response,โ€ the Revolutionary Guard said in a statement reported by state media.

 

A U.S. official blamed Iran for the attack earlier on Sunday but did not give further details. Iranian officials have yet to comment.

 

Separately, U.S. State Department spokesperson called it an โ€œoutrageous attackโ€ but said no Americans were hurt and there was no damage to U.S. government facilities in Irbil.

 

U.S. forces stationed at Irbilโ€™s international airport complex have in the past come under fire from rocket and drone attacks that Washington blames on Iran-aligned militia groups, but no such attacks have occurred for several months.

 

โ€œItโ€™s premature to point finger of blame at specific party but initial reports show indisputably that it was a cross-border short range missile attack,โ€ an Iraqi security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

 

โ€œParts of the fired missiles were retrieved and it was manufactured by Iran,โ€ he said.

 

In another sign of increased regional tensions, Iran also suspended on Sunday a fifth round of talks with regional rival Saudi Arabia that were due to take place in Baghdad on Wednesday.

 

The last time ballistic missiles were directed at U.S. forces was in January 2020 - an Iranian retaliation for the U.S. killing earlier that month of its military commander Qassem Soleimani at Baghdad airport.

 

No U.S. personnel were killed in the 2020 attack but many suffered head injuries.

 

Iraq and neighboring Syria are regularly the scene of violence between the United States and Iran. Iran-backed Shiโ€™ite Islamist militias have attacked U.S. forces in both countries and Washington has on occasion retaliated with air strikes.

 

An Israeli air strike in Syria on Monday killed two members of Iranโ€™s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), Iranian state media said this week. The IRGC vowed to retaliate, it said.

 

Kurdish officials did not immediately say where the missiles struck. A spokesperson for the regional authorities said there were no flight interruptions at Irbil airport.

 

Residents of Irbil posted videos online showing several large explosions, and some said the blasts shook their homes. Reuters could not independently verify those videos.

 

Iraq has been rocked by chronic instability since the defeat of the Sunni Islamist group Islamic State in 2017 by a loose coalition of Iraqi, U.S.-led and Iran-backed forces.

 

Since then, Iran-aligned militias have regularly attacked U.S. military and diplomatic sites in Iraq, U.S. and many Iraqi officials say. Iran denies involvement in those attacks.

 

Domestic politics has also fueled violence. Iraqi political parties, most of which have armed wings, are currently in tense talks over forming a government after an election in October. Shiโ€™ite militia groups close to Iran warn in private that they will resort to violence if they are left out of any ruling coalition.

 

The chief political foes of those groups include their powerful Shiโ€™ite rival, the populist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, who has vowed to form a government that leaves out Iranโ€™s allies and includes Kurds and Sunnis.

I have a thought about the motives and attitudes of global elites toward all people living on Earth. Anneke Lucas (Belgium child sex slave for the "elites") said of the aristocratic network, "The children were set against each other."

WASHINGTON โ€“ Five American companies owned by Ukrainian tycoons who are accused of laundering money and using the misappropriated funds to help buy U.S. assets were approved for as much as $13.3 million in loans through a federal program aimed at saving jobs during the pandemic, according to U.S. government records.

 

CC Metals & Alloys, Felman Production, Felman Trading Americas, Optima Management Group, and Optima 777 were among the more than 600,000 U.S. businesses approved for loans of $150,000 or more under the federal government's Paycheck Protection Program, commonly called the PPP, Treasury Department records show.

 

The U.S. Justice Department filed a civil complaint on August 6 that accuses Ukrainian billionaires Ihor Kolomoyskiy and Hennadiy Boholyubov of laundering hundreds of millions of dollars from a Kyiv-based bank and using the misappropriated funds to help purchase assets in the United States, including alloy and steel plants as well as real estate.

 

The two men control CC Metals & Alloys, Felman Production, Felman Trading Americas, Optima Management Group, and Optima 777 with their U.S. associates, Uriel Laber and Mordechai Korf, according to the Justice Departmentโ€™s lawsuit.

 

At least four of the companies are formally run by Laber and Korf from their headquarters on the penthouse floor of a Miami skyscraper.

 

The FBI on August 4 raided their Miami office as well as Optima Management Groupโ€™s office in Cleveland, Ohio, where they own three commercial buildings. The FBI has not charged anyone with a crime; its investigation is continuing.

 

Kolomoyskiy denies the laundering accusation, saying the money he and his partner used to purchase the U.S. assets came from their sale of Ukrainian steel assets to a Russian company for about $2 billion. The sale was completed in 2008.

 

Laber and Korf, through their lawyer, also deny the charges, saying they are part of a politically motivated attack against Kolomoyskiy and Boholyubov, whose relations with then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko began to sour in 2015.

 

Kolomoyskiy fled Ukraine in 2017, months after PrivatBank, his main funding vehicle and the largest commercial bank in Ukraine, was nationalized over a $5.5 billion hole caused by what banking regulators said was reckless lending to entities connected to him and Boholyubov.

Felman Production, a West Virginia-based producer of silicon manganese, which is also used in steel production, was approved for a loan of between $1 million and $2 million to help support nearly 100 jobs. The Ukrainian tycoons and their U.S. partners have invested tens of millions of dollars into Felman Production since purchasing it out of bankruptcy in 2006. Through their lawyer, Korf and Laber say their investments have helped revive โ€œdepressedโ€ U.S. industrial assets.

 

Felman Trading Americas, a ferroalloys trading company that the Justice Department said was set up by Korf and Laber to hide the tycoonsโ€™ ownership, was approved for a loan of between $350,000 and $1 million.

 

Optima Management Group, which managed the tycoons' U.S. commercial real estate, was approved for a loan of between $150,000 and $300,000.

 

Finally, Optima 777, which owns the Westin Hotel in Cleveland, was approved for a loan of between $2 million and $5 million to support 240 jobs.

 

Sage Hospitality Group, a Denver-based hotel manager, owns a minority stake in the Westin, its spokeswoman Kelly Bajorek told RFE/RL. Bloomberg News in July reported that Optima 777 was approved for a PPP loan.

 

A spokesman for Korf and Laber declined to say how much of the $13.3 million in approved loans their companies received.

 

The low-interest PPP loans are designed to keep employees on the payroll during the pandemic.

 

The PPP program has not avoided controversy. Some well-connected or well-funded businesses were approved for loans.

 

Korf had hired some of his relatives at the firms he ran for the tycoons, including his nephew, Menachem Sossonko, who had been employed at Felman Trading. The spokesman for Korf declined to say whether Sossonko was still employed.

 

Korf and Laber are also listed as managing members of Transenergy USA, a Texas-based trucking company for the energy industry.

 

Transenergy was approved for a PPP loan in May of between $350,000 and $1 million to help support 200 jobs.

KYIV โ€“ Senator John McCain says that the United States will not strike a "Faustian bargain" with Russian President Vladimir Putin, amid speculation that President-elect Donald Trump could scrap sanctions in a bid to improve ties.

 

Speaking in an exclusive interview with RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service in Kyiv on December 30 along with two other U.S. senators, McCain (Republican-Arizona) said any possible deal with Putin "would interfere with and undermine the freedom and democracies that exist today."

 

The U.S. Congress imposed sanctions on Moscow shortly after Russia forcibly annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula in March 2014 and for its ongoing support for pro-Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine.

 

Senator Lindsey Graham (Republican-South Carolina) said Congress would pursue in 2017 more sanctions against Russia, targeting the energy and banking sectors, as well as "Putin and his inner circle."

 

"We're going to do two things: We're going after Putin harder with tougher sanctions and we're going to be more helpful to our friends, like here in Ukraine," Graham said.

 

McCain, Graham, and Amy Klobuchar (Democrat-Minnesota) said there is strong support in Congress to provide Ukraine with "lethal defensive weapons" to help Kyiv in its fight against Russia-backed separatists in the east.

The senators faulted Moscow for failing to fulfill its obligations under the Minsk accords โ€“ a February 2015 agreement aimed at ending the conflict in eastern Ukraine, where more than 9,750 people have died since April 2014.

 

"How can you have a free and fair election or debate about the power-sharing with eastern Ukraine when you have 700 Russian tanks [in eastern Ukraine]?" Graham said.

 

Asked whether Trump may recognize Crimea as part of Russia, Graham said Congress would block any such move.

 

"The president alone can't do this. And the reason the Congress will reject such a notion is because it undermines the rule of law," Graham explained.

 

McCain also called for tougher action against Moscow for its alleged involvement in hacks into Democratic Party e-mails before the November 8 U.S. presidential election.

 

"We can make them a lot tougher, ranging from travel to identifying individuals who have been involved in this hacking and specific organizations. There are a lot more stringent measures we should take," McCain said. "After all, it was an attack on the United States of America and an attack on the fundamentals of our democracy. If you destroy the elections, then you destroy democracy."

 

U.S. President Barack Obama on December 29 ordered the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats and imposed sanctions on two Russian intelligence agencies over what the administration says was their involvement in the hacking.

 

Putin said on December 30 that Moscow would not respond in kind and would not expel any Americans from Russia, accusing the U.S. administration of "irresponsible 'kitchen' diplomacy."

 

On December 30, Trump praised Putin on Twitter for holding off on retaliatory actions, calling him "very smart."

 

Trump has brushed aside allegations from the CIA and other intelligence agencies that Russia was behind the cyberattacks. But it is unclear whether he will seek to roll back Obama's actions.

 

"If you have a hard time figuring out who is behind this, that doesn't speak well of you," Graham said. "The Russians are doing it all over the world."

 

Klobuchar said it wasn't only the United States that was being targeted by Russian cyberattacks.

 

"We have learned on this trip visiting Estonia and Lithuania and hearing about these cyberattacks in Ukraine โ€“ it has happened for years and years and years. And it's a technique that can be used in the French elections or the German elections," Klobuchar said, referring to two key upcoming elections in Europe in 2017.
