Manhattan US Attorneyโ€™s Office accidentally reveals โ€˜main clientsโ€™ of Sarah Lawrence sex cult prostitute

The Manhattan US Attorneyโ€™s Office accidentally released a list of alleged johns who frequented a hooker under the thumb of accused Sarah Lawrence sex-trafficker Larry Ray โ€” and the names may include a retired state judge, architect and financial whizes.

The list was admitted under seal at Rayโ€™s ongoing federal trial โ€” and inadvertently briefly uploaded to a public file share system Monday night before prosecutors took it down.

โ€œPlease do not reproduce, share, or use this exhibit in any way. If you have downloaded this file, please delete it,โ€ a rep for the office said in a statement sent to media outlets asking about the mistake.

The list is of alleged โ€œmain clientsโ€™โ€™ of Claudia Drury, who has been testifying that Ray made several million dollars by prostituting her. Drury sent the list in a 2018 e-mail to Rayโ€™s alleged cohort, Isabella Pollok.

Some of the names on the list, which was reviewed by The Post, were unusual monikers shared with several prominent people.

The development came before Ray apparently fell ill in court and had to be wheeled out for the second time since his trial started.

Ray, wearing an oxygen mask, was taken from Manhattan federal court on a stretcher after he apparently became sick just before 12:30 p.m.

The accused sex-trafficker, 62, also had been rushed out of court March 15 after his lawyer said he suffered an earlier seizure at the Brooklyn jail where heโ€™s being held during his trial.

Before the trial was put on hold Tuesday, Drury, 31, continued to testify about the four years she spent working as a prostitute allegedly under Rayโ€™s direction.

In the years leading up to her becoming a prostitute, Drury testified that Ray and Pollok groomed her sexually and encouraged her to engage in random sexual encounters. Pollok has denied any wrongdoing.

I get calls daily from people asking to buy my house. Headline says real estate sales are likely down 25% this year. Does not say real estate prices will be down 25% this year.

 

Discretionary purchases such as motor coaches are up MSRP +100K over what they were going for months ago.

 

The question is not so much what happens to assets but what happens to cash? A currency devaluation amidst a global currency devaluation (ie, BRICS) might mean that King Dollar still comes out on top but everybody takes a hit but if we take a lesser hit, the dollar may strengthen against the basket on the global stage..

UNESCO's director general boasted that one of the goals is to foster "worldwide curricula reflecting UNESCO values." This fall, UNESCO has been busy writing guidelines for the teaching of sex education, supposedly in order to slow the spread of HIV-AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

 

In these guidelines, UNESCO tells teachers in all countries to present abstinence until marriage as "only one of a range of choices available to young people" to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Other choices would surely be more fun.

 

The working draft of the guidelines calls for children ages 5 to 8 to be taught in school about masturbation (age 5 means starting in kindergarten). 5- to 8-year-old children would also be taught about same-sex couples and tolerance of different sexual orientations.

 

Schoolchildren ages 9 to 15 are to be given more detailed discussions about masturbation. New topics on the list for 9-year-olds include orgasm and abortion.

Russia's defense ministry claimed its military used hypersonic missiles against an underground ammunition warehouse as well as a fuel depot during the country's fighting in Ukraine last weekend, reportedly marking the first-ever use of the new type of weapon in combat.

 

Hypersonic missiles, which can travel five times the speed of sound, making them harder to track, trace and destroy before hitting a target, have inspired worry among U.S. officials and defense industry experts for years as some assess that adversaries like China and Russia outpace America in developing their own hypersonics.

 

Those warnings have been a constant drumbeat in recent years, part of annual arguments over the defense budget as well as Pentagon officials' cases to reorient the military away from counter-insurgency combat and toward potential competition with major world powers.

 

Despite those past arguments, senior leaders are downplaying the significance of the alleged Russian missile launches in Ukraine, claiming they can't confirm Russia's claims of their use and saying that even if they had been deployed, they'd likely have little impact and shouldn't be a concern for the U.S. military.

 

During an appearance on CBS' Sunday talk show "Face the Nation," Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the reported use of a hypersonic missile by Russian President Vladimir Putin's military is likely a distraction tactic to grow fear in the international community.

 

"I would not see it as a game changer," Austin told CBS. "I think the reason he is resorting to using these types of weapons is because he is trying to reestablish some momentum. And again, we've seen him attack towns and cities and civilians outright, (and) we expect to see that continue."

 

Additionally, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby told reporters Monday that it isn't clear that hypersonic weapons were actually used in Ukraine.

"Look, we've seen the Russian claim that they used a hypersonic missile," Kirby told reporters. "We're not in a position to refute that claim, but we're also not able to independently verify it."

 

Air Vice-Marshal Michael John Smeath of the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force said if the missiles were launched by Russia, they were likely a Kinzhal, a hypersonic unveiled by Putin in 2018.

 

Smeath mirrored Austin's sentiments that the missile's alleged use is more likely a move to inspire confidence in Russia's military as it faces a stalled invasion in Ukraine, highlighted by numerous pitfalls that have led to doubts as to whether Russia's force should be regarded as a near-peer to the world's powers.

 

"Russian claims of having used the developmental Kinzhal is highly likely intended to detract from a lack of progress in Russia's ground campaign," Smeath said in a UK Ministry of Defence press release. "Deployment of Kinzhal is highly unlikely to materially affect the outcome of Russia's campaign in Ukraine."

 

Tactically, using hypersonic missiles some of which have nuclear-carrying capabilities and can be fired from very far distances at sound-shattering speed has nearly the same effect on a ground target as conventional bombs, making the use of the prohibitively expensive weapons surprising.

 

Dave Deptula, a retired Air Force lieutenant general and dean of the nonprofit Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, told Military.com that the alleged use of the hypersonics should cause little concern for Ukraine or the United States.

 

"A missile is a missile, and the Russians shot nearly one thousand of them at Ukraine," Deptula said. "It is not significant that the missile that he [Putin] launches flies over Mach 5 or not. So, it is a bit peculiar why he's doing this, given these are extraordinarily expensive missiles."

 

A senior U.S. defense official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, speculated Russia may even be running low on other missiles, and tapped into their hypersonics for those strikes in Ukraine.

 

"It could be that they're running low on precision-guided munitions and feel like they need to tap into that resource," the defense official said Monday. "It could be that they're trying to send a message to the west, but also to Ukraine, and trying to gain some leverage at the negotiating table."

 

The Pentagon has worked to address the U.S.'s hypersonic research in recent months, noting that it has been trailing behind adversaries such as Russia and China.

For Canadians looking to help in Ukraine, sending donations of money and essential supplies is likely more attainable than volunteering to fight on the front lines.

The Ukrainian government estimates at least 20,000 foreigners have joined The International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine (ILDU), a foreign legion established in late February shortly after Russia's invasion began.

ILDU spokesperson Damien Magrou told CTV News Channel on Saturday the legion has attracted volunteers from over 50 nations and includes "quite a lot of Canadians of Ukrainian descent."

Anyone volunteering, however, needs prior combat experience, he said.

"Right now we're looking for people exclusively with live combat experience. We've had unfortunately quite a lot of people coming through to Ukraine and being turned away because they don't have this experience."

Magrou said combat units are being sent to the front line "as soon as we can", and their members aren't being trained first beyond "top-up training" meant to get them familiar with Ukrainian equipment.

"We don't do that much training at this stage," he said. "This is one of the reasons we're looking for already experienced fighters that know their way around a battlefield."

While the Canadian government is discouraging citizens from travelling to Ukraine given the "security situation," it doesn't prohibit fighting alongside that country's armed forces.

Defence Minister Anita Anand told CTV's Question Period last week "it is an individual decision" if people want to go and fight.

Ukrainian-Canadian Oleh Hylniailiuk is among those who've volunteered to fight in Ukraine.

Hylniailiuk doesn't have combat experience and said he's on a waiting list to be called up if needed.

"Because I don't have this training or combat experience, I am in the fourth wave of callings," he told CTV News Channelon Saturday. "If our country needs more soldiers, they will organize the third and fourth waves of callings and I will get in this way."

In the meantime, he said he's volunteering his time in Kyiv in other ways, includingby helping source and fund equipment for fighters.

"I'm working on this right now, basically to provide Ukrainian soldiers with necessary protective equipment," Hylniailiuk said.

Humanitarian groups also need help, and Magrou said anyone who has arrived in Ukraine or is planning to and who doesn't have combat experience could volunteer their time there.

"There's a number of humanitarian organizations working really hard in evacuating people and getting refugees out safely," he said.

Entire City Council resigns in protest of Colorado corruption scandal

The entire Florence City Council resigned leaving the mayor as the only elected official in the Fremont County city.

Three Florence City Council members submitted their resignation overnight amid a growing corruption scandal. The remaining three submitted theirs throughout Tuesday.

Councilwoman Melissa Hardy, Councilman Brian Allen, Councilwoman Kristal Wood, Councilman Anthony Esquibel, Councilman Mike Vendetti, and Councilman Allen Knisley all resigned.

These resignations come after Monday night's council meeting where a citizen called for the Florence Mayor's resignation. During the meeting, Mayor Paul Villagrana said he won't resign because 500 people elected him in.

The six resigned members all tell 13 Investigates they quit their jobs because they did everything they could to find the truth and address corruption and were rejected.

Hardy and Allen have been pushing for answers and taking action to address issues exposed by 13 Investigates.

Those issues uncovered include a pattern of abuse by former City Manager Mike Patterson that spanned several years, former and current city employees saying they were forced to take off COVID-19 sick time when they weren't ill, and missing taxpayer money.

"The stress I have endured in the last 6 months has begun to take a toll on my health and my ability to be the kind of wife and mother my family deserves. I believe that I have worked diligently to find the truth and pursue every avenue I could towards fixing what has gone so terribly wrong in the City of Florence. At this point, under the scope of my authority, I do not believe I am able to be of further assistance to the citizens. The council can only give so much direction and if it goes unfulfilled there is little recourse. We can try to set the example and expectation of the change we are seeking but that too can be rejected. We are also subject to making decisions with the information that we are provided, whether it is accurate and complete or not. I hold out hope that things will continue to improve and wish everyone that continues to move toward that goal the best. I was so proud to be elected for this job last fall and it has been an honor serving as a representative for the community. I am truly sorry to anyone that feels I have let them down by this choice but I can no longer serve on the Florence City council," Melissa Hardy told 13 Investigates.

Hardy led the council to fire its city attorney earlier this month. She is also heard in executive session tapes pressing for the truth and action on alleged wrongdoing in the city.

Brian Allen called for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into the city's missing taxpayer money and other money woes in an open meeting a few weeks ago. The Florence city management did not follow his direction and only asked the CBI to investigate a 2019 severance package of the former Florence police chief.

Tens of thousands of Ukrainian women have taken up arms during the war sparked by Russia's invasion. According to media reports, women constitute as much as 15% to 17% of the Ukrainian fighting force.

 

In the first two weeks of the conflict, social media was replete with images of Ukrainian women training for combat. On March 15, CNN reported that after dropping off their parents and children in the border town of Przemysl, Poland, some Ukrainian women are turning around to go back to the fight.

 

"They view returning home to a war zone as an act of symbolic resistance to Russian aggressors," CNN reporters Ed Lavandera and Cristiana Moisescu wrote.

 

As experts on women and extremism, we believe Ukraine offers a unique insight into the roles that women can play in defending the nation and as leaders in their own right.

 

Distinctly Ukrainian feminism

Ukrainian women have historically enjoyed independence not common in other parts of the globe.

 

One reason for this is Ukraine's geography. A temperate climate and fertile land combined to enable independence for hardworking people. Fathers didn't need to trade their daughters for dowry to till the land, nor were they indebted like serfs to wealthy landowners. A widow could remain unmarried if she chose to and thrive by cultivating her garden and tending to her animals. In Ukrainian folklore, there is a recurrent character of a single woman, often a widow, who can survive and thrive without a man.

 

No doubt, the real life of Ukrainian women was no fairy tale, and their experiences might not universally fit into this narrative. However, from a diversity of human experience, a culture retains those stories that resonate with most of its members as an ideal upon which they can agree. In Ukraine, this ideal includes fiercely independent women.

 

Ukraine's geographic circumstances also gave rise to a feminist culture in which women had a say in marriage, rather than being "given away" by their fathers or male relatives.

 

In the fall, when marriage proposals were traditionally delivered via "svaty" โ€“ a delegation from the groom's family โ€“ the bride could refuse the offer by giving the family a pumpkin as a consolation prize. The Ukrainian phrase "to catch a pumpkin" means to be rejected by a woman. A Ukrainian girl's beauty was sometimes gauged as having "a closetful of pumpkins," implying she could expect to have many suitors.

 

Such narratives have shaped Ukrainian cultural psychology and, as a result, attitudes toward women.

 

Since the beginning of the 2022 Russian invasion, the internet amplified several remarkable videos depicting Ukrainian women opposing armed Russian soldiers. One woman was famously shown offering sunflower seeds to the troops, instructing them to "at least put these seeds in your pockets, so sunflowers will grow when you all die here."

 

Another video showed a woman yelling at a heavily armed Russian soldier atop his tank in Konotop, "Don't you know where you are? You're in Konotop. Every other woman here is a witch. You'll never get an erection, starting tomorrow."

 

There are videos from towns all over occupied Ukraine where women yell at Russian soldiers, shame them and tell them to "think about their mothers and wives." Ukrainian women who are not already in the armed forces or confronting Russian soldiers with sharp tongues or tomatoes have been volunteering on the front lines.

 

This volunteering practice traces its roots to the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, when volunteers created a de facto "second state" while the official state failed, crippled by Russian-led corruption and cronyism.

 

In 2014, female volunteers delivered meals,clothes and fuel to the men who defended Maidanโ€“ Kyiv's Independence Square, which became the stage for monthslong protests against riot police and pro-Russian mercenaries employed by the government of then-President Viktor Yanukovych. Mike Lindell Drops 88-Page Forensic Report Showing Conclusive Evidence of Manipulated Voter Files From Mesa, Colorado

For several months, Mike Lindell has been championing a forensic review of voter files from Mesa County, Colorado. In a series of forensic reports looking into Coloradoโ€™s use of Dominion vote tabulators, a data forensic team led by cyber-security expert Doug Gould have been reviewing electronic files from the 2020 election. {Direct Rumble Link}

 

According to Mike Lindell, Doug Gould and the team of forensic analysts who just completed the work, have conclusive evidence that files were manipulated and deleted during a May 2021, software update driven by the system vendor, Dominion. Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters made a copy of the election files before and after the Dominion vendor installed software. A forensic review of those files shows a difference in the actual voting tabulation.

Mike Lindell notes he is filing injunctions immediately against seven states to stop them from using these electronic systems in the 2022 election, and later more injunctions will be filed in other states. The evidence to support those injunctions is included in the 88-page report.

 

I hope Lindell is successful, because part of the motivation for Joe Biden to continue extending the national state of emergency over COVID, appears to be the ongoing effort to use expanded mail-in ballots in the 2022 election.

Washington turns to TikTok influencers to promote its narrative on Ukraine

 

White House TikTok propagandists and Reddit mercenaries are in way over their heads on Ukraine

 

Since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, social media has been bombarded with one-sided hero worship, amplified and drawn into usersโ€™ timelines through the magic of the infamously mysterious algorithms that govern these platforms, whose functioning regulators worldwide have had trouble grasping.

 

Thereโ€™s the fictitious tale of the Ukrainian Snake Island border guards in the Black Sea, which was widely amplified by traditional Western media. As the story went, upon the approach of a Russian warship, the guards told the ship over radio communication to โ€œgo f*** itselfโ€, after which they were reportedly liquidated. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy even praised their bravery. The good news is that heโ€™ll now be able to award them their โ€œposthumousโ€ medals for bravery in person, since theyโ€™re apparently still around.

 

Then came the tale of the โ€œGhost of Kyivโ€, a mysterious Ukrainian pilot credited across social platforms for single-handedly downing Russian jets left and right. That tale, too, turned out to be created from a montage of fake news, including video game footage. However, this literal propaganda somehow managed to escape removal by the social media platforms, which constantly claim to combat fake news.

 

These outright fabrications platformed online saturate the entire world before any sensible rebuttal of them can make a dent. It seems there is a concerted effort โ€“ facilitated by these online giants โ€“ to portray the conflict as a Superbowl-style showdown between โ€œTeam Ukraine/NATOโ€ and โ€œteam Russiaโ€, which requires everyone to pick the โ€œrightโ€ side under severe peer pressure to conform to whatever is overwhelmingly promoted by these platforms. Before now, that mostly meant style, fashion, makeup and dance trends. After all, the top 10 influencers on TikTok are performers squarely serving (and profiting from) beauty and fashion industry advertiser

 

But leave it to Washington to ask, โ€œWhat if we could get people known for nice handbags and trendy dances on TikTok to trash talk Vladimir Putin?โ€ And thatโ€™s exactly what they did โ€“ by briefing 30 of the most popular TikTok influencers about the war in Ukraine. Ellie Zeiler, a 18-year-old fashion influencer from California who attended the meeting last week, hosted by White House officials via Zoom video, including spokesperson Jen Psaki and National Security Council staffers, led the trendsetter to suddenly take a stab at explaining to her 10.5 million followers why gas prices in are now high.

 

And no, it isnโ€™t because Joe Biden failed to secure North American energy independence via the Keystone XL pipeline with Canada, which he canceled to the great joy of Democratic Party donors invested in Saudi oil and the current railways that profit from transporting the fuel above ground, or the environmental NGOs that they fund in both the US and Canada. Nor is it due, at least in part, to the endless harassment and sanctioning of European companies that were on the verge of securing the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to transport Russian gas into Europe via Germany โ€“ the literal fuel for European production of ethanol in car fuel.

 

No, according to the fashion influencer co-opted by the White House to serve on the frontline of the propaganda war against Russia, high gas prices are high because, โ€œRussia is one of the top three producers of oil and it is actually their No. 1 revenue source.Now, with Putin starting this horrific fight between Ukraine and Russia, nobody wants to work with him and do international trade.โ€

 

When one is so busy selecting filters and music for videos, it must be easy to miss the small details, for example, German Chancellor Olaf Scholzโ€™s recent remarks contradicting the notion that no one wants Russiaโ€™s gas. โ€œEurope has deliberately exempted energy supplies from Russia from sanctions,โ€ Scholz said. โ€œAt the moment, Europeโ€™s supply of energy for heat generation, mobility, power supply and industry cannot be secured in any other way. It is therefore of essential importance for the provision of public services and the daily lives of our citizens.โ€โ€ฆ

 

According to others present at the White House meeting, officials wanted influencers to emphasize to their audience that โ€œRussian troops are not happy with their own invasion,โ€ and to underline, according to journalist and TikToker, Marcus DiPaola, that โ€œRussia is not going to win in Ukraine. Things have gone so badly for them that it's just not possible anymore.โ€

 

A group of influencers called, โ€œGen-Z for Change,โ€ noted on Twitter that they โ€œjoined the @WhiteHouse and @WHNSC for a briefing on the U.S.' strategic goals in Ukraine so we're better able to debunk misinformation.โ€

Russian โ€˜Zโ€™ symbol gymnast speaks out over fears of lengthy ban

 

Russian gymnast Ivan Kuliak insists he should not be banned for his show of support for his countryโ€™s armed forces at a recent competition, with the young starโ€™s coach saying she is braced for a lengthy suspension.

 

Kuliak appeared on the podium at a World Cup event in Doha earlier this month with a โ€˜Zโ€™ sign attached to his leotard. The 20-year-old year later explained he had taken the step because of what he described as โ€œunacceptableโ€ behavior from Ukrainian rivals, whom he accused of โ€œgreatly escalatingโ€ the atmosphere at the competition.

 

Ivan Kuliak said he did โ€˜nothing wrongโ€™, while the gymnastโ€™s trainer revealed her concerns over a long suspension

 

Kuliak later told RT thathe displayed the โ€˜Zโ€™ sign โ€“ which has been added to Russian military vehicles and equipment during the operation in Ukraine โ€“ because the symbol is โ€œfor victory and for peace,โ€ and that he would not hesitate to make the gesture again.

 

The Gymnastics Ethics Foundation (GEF) has opened a disciplinary case against Kuliak, with Russian head coach Valentina Rodionenko fearing at least a one-year ban for the star.

 

Facing that prospect, Kuliak has reiterated that, in his mind, he was not in the wrong.

 

โ€œIn general, I consider the decision to [potentially] suspend me unfair,โ€ said the gymnast, according to Life.ru.

 

โ€œI didnโ€™t do anything illegal, I didnโ€™t break any rules, and now they want to ban me. In all this you can see the attitude towards our country.โ€

 

Russian head coach Rodionenko likewise said any ban would be unjust, explaining that she and fellow trainer Igor Kalabushkin could also be sanctioned, and accusing the Ukrainian delegation in Doha of inciting antagonism.

 

โ€œThe international federation made this decision under pressure from the Ukrainians, and some of them even advocated our lifelong disqualification,โ€ Rodionenko told TASS.

 

โ€œLawyers are working with us now who hope theyโ€™ll save us, but personally I doubt this outcome of the case. The decision should be made at the end of March.โ€โ€ฆ

Jack Russell Terriers are pretty awesome dogs.

Several years back I rescued one of these fine pups, and took him to an off-leash dog park where several large dogs, including 3 German Shepards were tormenting the poor little guy.

I went to intervene when an older guy told me to leave it alone. He said that it was a fair fight, and not to worry.

Before I knew it, the big dogs were running away, terrified of this little guy.

The guy who told me not to worry, adopted him. It was a perfect match and a happy ending for both of them.

โ€˜#DarkMAGAโ€™ has been appearing across social media for just over a week. Iโ€™m trying to get to grips with it. What is Dark MAGA? And is the right going to be led down another Q-style garden path โ€“ โ€œtrusting the planโ€ only for a plot to never emerge?

 

If you ask some of the progenitors of #DarkMAGA, itโ€™s not a Q thing, nor remotely close. Itโ€™s a response to Donald Trump being swallowed, in part, by Washington D.C. and the political blob. The endorsements. The appointees. The consultants. Dark MAGA says enough. And it appears to root itself in a synthwave style alternative reality that wonders what could have been, had Trump and his team pursued immorality and its favorite abode โ€“ the D.C. swamp โ€“more forcefully.

 

Twitter user @Conan_Esq describes it as โ€œthe aesthetic demand that Trump embrace a harder and more focused approach to the role only he can fill. He was too kindhearted, too forgiving. Dark MAGA demands he learn from his mistakes.โ€

Massive fire breaks out at New Jersey Pepsi factory

Two firefighters were injured battling a massive inferno that broke out a Pepsi-Co bottling factory in New Jersey on Tuesday night, reports said.

The five-alarm blaze at the plant in Piscataway ignited around 6:30 p.m. and sent gigantic flames into sky as heavy clouds of black smoke choked the area.

The conditions forced officials were forced to shut down streets surrounding New Brunswick Avenue, authorities said.

The fire was under control by 11 p.m. But multiple crews were expected to continue working throughout the night putting out hot spots, according to The Asbury Park Press.

As first responders from around the area fled to the scene, one firefighter was hospitalized with heat exhaustion and another smoke-eater received medical attention on scene of a shoulder injury, the article said.

Graham storms out of Jackson SCOTUS hearing after Durbin Gitmo clash

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) walked out of Tuesdayโ€™s Senate hearing for Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson during a clash with Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) over the release of terror detainees from Guantanamo Bay, exclaiming at one point that he wouldnโ€™t care if they died in prison without trial.

Graham (R-SC) had grilled Jackson about her time representing Gitmo detainees while she was a federal public defender in Washington, DC and pointed out that those released from the military prison in Cuba often returned to the battlefield to kill Americans โ€” with some even ending up in high-ranking Taliban positions.

The South Carolina lawmaker also ranted against far-left groups who advocated for Jacksonโ€™s nomination at the expense of Grahamโ€™s preferred candidate, Palmetto State federal judge J. Michelle Childs.

โ€œEvery group that wants to pack the court, that believes this court is a bunch of right-wing nuts who are going to destroy America, that considered the Constitution trash, all wanted you picked,โ€ Graham told Jackson.โ€‹โ€‹

โ€œThis is all I can say: that so many of these left-wing radical groups who would destroy the law as we know it declared war on Michelle Childs and supported you is problematic for me,โ€ he said. โ€‹

At that point, Durbin spoke up to say that Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), who had advocated for Childs to be Bidenโ€™s choice, was backing Jacksonโ€™s confirmation.

โ€œOn the issue of Guantanamo, there are currently 39 detainees remaining. The annual budget is $549 million per year,โ€ Durbin said. โ€œEach of these detainees is being held at the expense of $13 million per year. If they were to be incarcerated at the SuperMax federal prison in Colorado, the amount would be dramatically, dramatically less.โ€

Graham then interjected and asked if Durbin would be willing to support โ€œindefinite detention under the law of war for these detaineesโ€ in the US if Gitmo were closed. As Durbin began to respond, the Republican interjected, โ€œThe answer is no.โ€

โ€‹โ€The system has failed miserably, and advocates to change the system โ€” like she was advocating โ€” would destroy our ability to protect this country,โ€ Graham said, indicating Jackson.

โ€œWeโ€™re at war, weโ€™re not fighting a crime,โ€ the Republican added. โ€œThis is not some passage of time event. As long as theyโ€™re dangerous, I hope they all die in jail. If theyโ€™re โ€‹going back and kill Americans, it wonโ€™t bother me one bit if 39 of them die in prisonโ€‹. Thatโ€™s a better outcome than letting them go. If it costs $500 million to keep โ€™em in jail, keep โ€™em in jail, because theyโ€™re going to go back to the fight.

โ€œLook at the frigginโ€™ Afghan government!โ€ Graham exclaimed. โ€œItโ€™s made up of former detainees at Gitmo! This whole thing by the left about this war ainโ€™t working!โ€‹โ€

As Durbin resumed the hearing, Graham got up and walked out of the room, taking a bottle of soda with him.

As noble as this idea is, the folklore surrounding this ill-fated but important run arenโ€™t complete. In fact, it is more likely that he ran a much greater distance than 26 miles. Hereโ€™s an overview of who Pheidippides was and the real details of the historic events surrounding his noble actions and also of his death.

 

Day Runner By Profession

Pheidippides was employed as a day runner, referred to as hemerodrome, in Ancient Greek, by the Athenian military. These ancient couriers were responsible for running for days at a time in order to give important messages. They were designed to move swiftly and to arrive with their messages in a timely manner. They trained extensively, and they were capable of running great distances.

 

Pheidippides Runs to Sparta

Pheidippides was on duty the day of the fabled Battle of Marathon, which pitted the Athenian army against the Persian army. However, before the invasion, it was Pheidippides responsibility to run the 240 kilometer (150 mile) distance from Athens to Sparta to ask Sparta for their help. Sparta said theyโ€™d help but since they were in the middle of a religious festival, they were unable to leave right away. The journey from Athens to Sparta took about two days. After he gave his message to the Spartans requesting their help, he turned around and ran the distance from Sparta to Athens to let them know that the Spartans wouldnโ€™t be able to fight right away.

 

Athens Fights Against Persia Alone

Ultimately, by the time Sparta would have been ready, the outcome of the Battle of Marathon was already complete. Although the Persian army far outnumbered the Athenian army, Athens proved to have a better battle strategy and more sophisticated fighting techniques. Athens won the battle, but now it was up to Pheidippides to make the run from Marathon to Athens, a distance of 40 kilometers or about 25 miles. He gave the message explaining that Athens was victorious and then he collapsed and died from the combined exertion of that run and the 300 miles that he ran from Athens to Sparta and back.
