Federal Court Rules that Only Humans Can Hold Patents – Not AI Systems

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled on Friday that inventors must be human in another blow to computer scientists who believe AI machines should be recognized as inventors on patents.

Bloomberg reports that computer scientist Stephen Thaler has faced another setback in his efforts to have artificial intelligence machines recognized as inventors on patents. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled on Friday that the term “individual” in the Patent Act refers only to humans which means that an AI doesn’t count as an inventor of a patentable invention.

The decision aligns with courts in the European Union, the UK, and Australia, which have also refused to accept Thaler’s argument. Only one court ruled in favor of Thaler’s argument, a South African court that said AI can be a patent inventor.

The Federal Circuit is generally seen as the final authority on U.S. patent matters unless the U.S. Supreme Court steps in. Thaler plans to appeal to the high court according to his attorney Ryan Abbott of Brown, Neri, Smith & Khan LLP.

Abbott stated that the Federal Circuit adopted a “narrow and textualist approach” to the Patent Act. “=•It ignores the purpose of the Patent Act and the outcome that AI-generated inventions are now unpatentable in the United States==,” he said. “That is an outcome with real negative social consequences.”

Thaler is not the only computer scientist arguing for AI rights in recent years. Breitbart News recently reportedthat Google has fired Blake Lemoine, an engineer who went public last month with his theory that Google’s AI language system is sentient and has its own “wants” and should be respected as a person. Google and several AI experts have denied Lemoine’s claims and the company confirmed that Lemoine had been fired.

Lemoine told BBC News that he is currently getting legal advice and could not comment further. In a statement, Google said that Lemoine’s claims about The Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LAMDA) were “wholly unfounded” and that the company worked with Lemoine for “months” to clarify this.

The statement said: “So, it’s regrettable that despite lengthy engagement on this topic, Blake still chose to persistently violate clear employment and data security policies that include the need to safeguard product information.”

Pfizer and Valneva Announce Clinical Trial of New Lyme Disease Vaccine

Pfizer Inc. and French biotech company Valneva SE are launching a phase 3 clinical study to test an experimental vaccine against Lyme disease, the companies announced on Aug. 8.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States and is caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks, also called deer ticks.

If the trial proves to be successful, Pfizer and Valneva’s experimental vaccine would be the only clinical way to prevent the disease, after the previous vaccine for humans, LYMErix, was discontinued in 2002 due to “insufficient consumer demand,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

According to a press release, the randomized placebo-controlled trial will include about 6,000 volunteers aged 5 years and older, and will be conducted in up to 50 locations where Lyme disease is highly endemic, including Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and the United States.

Data from the CDC shows that a total of 34,945 confirmed and probable cases of Lyme disease were reported to state and local health departments by health care providers and laboratories in the United States in 2019.

However, recent estimates using other data collection methods suggest that approximately 476,000 people across the United States may get Lyme disease each year.

Infection Rates Increasing

The European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention says there are several possible causes of the increased incidence of Lyme disease infections, including changing land use patterns, increased density of the deer and rodent population, warmer average temperatures, and habitat encroachment by humans.

The nonprofit organization FAIR Health also analyzed health insurance claims in the United States and found that Lyme disease has drastically increased over the past 15 years, with the illness more than tripling in rural areas (pdf).

Participants in the clinical trial for the new vaccine will receive either three doses of the vaccine, known as VLA15, or three saline placebo shots as a primary vaccination series between August 2022 and the spring 2023 tick season.

After one year, they’ll get a single booster dose or another saline placebo.

According to Pfizer, VLA15 “uses an established mechanism of action for a Lyme disease vaccine that targets the outer surface protein A (OspA) of Borrelia burgdorferi” and blocks it, which then “inhibits the bacterium’s ability to leave the tick and infect humans.”

The vaccine is designed to protect people against North American and European strains of the Lyme disease bacteria.

“With increasing global rates of Lyme disease, providing a new option for people to help protect themselves from the disease is more important than ever,” said Annaliesa Anderson, senior vice president and head of vaccine research and development at Pfizer.

If Trump Mar-a-Lago raid is designed to keep him off the 2024 ballot, it may not work

The FBI raid on former President Trump's home at Mar-a-Lago has unleashed a familiar euphoria among critics who have longed for the scene of agents descending upon the president's residence in a criminal operation.

One MSNBC pundit declared on Monday night, after the news of the raid broke, that day of the "orange jumpsuit" may finally be at hand while another simply exclaimed "hallelujah." It was a tad premature since we do not even know if classified material was found and, if so, whether there is a criminal case to be made from such a discovery.

I previously testified in Congress on the earlier seizure of the boxes at Mar-a-Lago under the Presidential Records Act and how criminal prosecutions have been rare under the law. Nevertheless, criminal charges are possible, including under Section 2071 which states that anyone who "willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates or destroys … any record, proceeding, map, book, paper, document, or other thing, filed or deposited … in any public office." That crime, however, requires a showing of not just negligence but "an act is … done voluntarily and intentionally and with the specific intent to do something the law forbids."

Notably, even the most serious cases of mishandling classified records have not resulted in major charges. One example is that of former Clinton National Security Adviser Sandy Berger who was found to have secretly stuffed classified material into his pants and socks to remove them from a secure facility. He then hid them in a spot to be retrieved later. It was a flagrant and premeditated violation of federal law and put national security secrets at risk.

Yet, Berger was allowed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor and did not have to serve any jail time. Indeed, his security clearance was suspended for only three years.

Section 2071 has excited the imagination of such critics because of a line that states that a convicted party can "be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both; and shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States."

Hillary Clinton's campaign lawyer who was a critical player in pushing the false Russian collusion claims in the Steele dossier. In addition to accusations that he may have lied about the funding of the Steele dossier, Elias has been sanctioned in court for his conduct representing Democratic causes.

Yet, Elias was not alone citing the possible use of a Section 2071 charge to block Trump's expected presidential run in 2024. Former federal prosecutor Harry Litman even suggested that this could be the actual plan of the Justice Department to end Trump's political career: "So this could be the whole enchilada in terms of DOJ resolution."

Consider that culinary-legal analysis for a second. The claim is that the Justice Department may be actively seeking to use a charge to block Trump as the real motivation for this raid and possible charge. There is not a hint of concern over the FBI being used to achieve such a political purpose. That is putting aside the fact that, unless there is evidence of a "willful and unlawful" effort to conceal or retain such material, the FBI could end up an enchilada short of a combination plate for prosecution.

There is also a significant constitutional hurdle facing this latest means of barring Trump from office. This is not the first time that this disqualification argument has been made and scholars have previously raised constitutional objections to it.

The problem is that the law would add a qualification or condition that is not stated in the Constitution. There are constitutional ways to impeach a president or to bar a former president from future office. The mishandling of official records is not one of them.

In analogous cases like Powell v. McCormack and U.S. Term Limits v. Thornton, the Supreme Court rejected the authority of states to impose new qualifications for congressional seats under Article I. The same is presumably true under Article II when it comes to the chief executive.

There is ample reason to doubt that the presidency would be deemed barred by statute in this fashion. What would not be in doubt is how such a novel claim of disqualification would be received by millions of citizens already skeptical of the motivations of both the Biden administration and specifically the FBI.

The basis and even the motivation of this raid will become clear in time, including whether there is evidence of willful and unlawful conduct by the former president. However, whatever this raid produces, this "enchilada" will likely be hard for most judges to swallow as a way to keeping Trump off the ballot in 2024.

Breitbart News senior contributor and Government Accountability Institute president Peter Schweizer said Monday night on FNC’s “Jesse Watters Primetime” that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) son Paul Pelosi, Jr. is consulting in a way that is “very reminiscent” of Hunter Biden’s business dealings.

Schweizer said, “This is a particularly cynical and galling move by the Pelosis. First of all, as you pointed out, Paul Pelosi Sr., Nancy’s husband, has been under scrutiny for insider trading issues the stock trades. He has to, of course, disclose his finances because he is the spouse of Nancy Pelosi. Your adult children do not need to disclose their financial transactions. So, it seems like they switched attention to their son’s commercial activities.”

He added, “To put even a tighter note on this, Jesse, look at what is happening here. Nancy Pelosi is flying to the Asian Pacific region as the entire region is nervous and scared about the looming threat posed by China. He is not a foreign policy adviser. He has no background, looking for business deals. This is what you call leverage. This is the sort of stuff you would expect from the Mafia, where you kind of create a demand for your own services. The kind of services that Paul Pelosi Jr. is offering are very reminiscent of Hunter Biden’s, by the way. They are vague. They are consulting are offering advisory services. National Education Association adds book about kneeling during the national anthem to its suggested reading list

The National Education Association, the largest teachers' union in the country, recommended a book about two cheerleaders who protest by taking a knee during the national anthem. The reading suggestion also features reflective writing questions, a discussion guide, and additional activist resources.

NEA's "Read Across America" initiative includes "12 months of recommended books, authors, and teaching resources that promote diversity and inclusion."

"Why We Fly," a book by Kimberly Jones and Gilly Segal, appeared on the NEA's August 2022 reading list for young adults. The story is about two girls on the cheer team who protest the national anthem by taking a knee. The authors of the book took inspiration from Colin Kaepernick.

A passage from the book reads, "As the first strains of the anthem begin, we all look to Leni, who signals with one pom-pom and then drops until one knee touches the grass. We fall like a line of dominoes, one by one, just as we'd planned."

A couple of scenes from the book feature one of the two main characters smoking marijuana from a vape pen. When caught smoking, the student comments, "Well-behaved women rarely make history."

Supplemental reading guides are included with the book listing. The guides provide teachers with suggestions on how to quiz students. Discussion questions include "What examples of discrimination, racism, or racial privilege can you identify from the book? From your own experiences?"

Another discussion question reads, "What did Leni, Nelly, and Three learn about social justice activism? What did you learn about how to step up and when to step aside? How do you determine when it is a moment for you to speak or to listen?"

The book's listing also included an additional discussion guide sheet that asks, "After the cheer team first takes a knee, the student-led organizations in the school discuss whether they should collectively do so at the next game. What are the arguments for and against taking this action the characters espouse?"

The related resources section link to Facing History, a non-profit organization with the mission of using "lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate." The website encourages teachers to have students reflect on several questions, including "why do you think the people in each image are kneeling?" and "How has the response to the Take A Knee protest changed over time?"

Today's Blind Items - The Rescuer

Yes, if there was one more s it would be the name of a classic Disney cartoon. The difference is those cartoon characters actually rescued someone and our rescuer just likes to tell a tall tale while also hiding his terrible misdeeds. I always get suspicious when a celebrity, especially one who was A or A- list at the time the story happened, has no independent confirmation or someone, even a flunky or employee who was with him when it happened. Instead, it is some fake story generated by publicists to give the celebrity something to discuss in interviews for a few years.

This celebrity only got to use the story for a year before everyone suspected he wasn't the noble person he led the world to believe. He likes to say he stopped human trafficking in its tracks and will give you the location of the country where he did it, but no one was there to see it. What people did see in that country was the celebrity engaging in the hiring of escorts for himself multiple times each day while he was in the country. There is proof about him bragging to friends in disbelief about how cheap the escorts were and how young they were and how he couldn't get enough and he could do whatever he wanted. I suspect that if he did save any, that they were a sex he didn't prefer, so sent them back without using them and that was his contribution to halting sex trafficking.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) refused to answer questions about the FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago, the home of former President Donald Trump.

During a press event, when McConnell was asked about his reaction to the FBI’s raid at Mar-a-Lago, he quickly responded, “I’m here today to talk about the flood and the recovery from the flood.”

Breitbart News attempted to reach McConnell’s office for comment earlier Tuesday morning and has not heard back by the time of publication.The minority leader has not made any public announcement regarding the raid and has appeared to show no concern.

At this time, three Republican senators in leadership have issued public statements condemning the raid, including Senate Republican Conference chair John Barrasso(R-WY), National Republican Senatorial Committee chair Rick Scott (R-FL), and Senate Republican Conference vice chair Joni Ernst (R-IA).

At the time, the White House “played dumb” by insisting that President Joe Biden had no prior knowledge of the raid. “The president was not briefed, was not aware of it. No one from the White House was given a head’s up,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre claimed on Tuesday.

On Monday night, the former president, in a lengthy statement, was the first to confirm the FBI raid of his home in Palm Beach.

The US Department of Defense will not downgrade the rank of the military post tasked with bolstering security coordination between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, following bipartisan opposition from lawmakers, two Congressional aides said Tuesday.

Pentagon spokesman Rob Lodewick told The Times of Israel last week that his office was going ahead with plans to lower the rank required to be appointed US Security Coordinator, or USSC, in Jerusalem from a three-star general to colonel. The move, planned for the end of the year, was slated to be part of a cost-saving program passed by Congress in 2017, which affected 111 positions across the globe.

In the wake of Lodewick’s comments, lawmakers redoubled efforts to nix the plan, expressing concerns that downgrading the post could harm US efforts to maintain stability between Israelis and Palestinians, one of the congressional aides who spoke to The Times of Israel said.

On Tuesday, several lawmakers who had reached out to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin urging him to intervene on the matter were notified by the Pentagon that the Jerusalem coordinator would not be among the posts the Defense Department will downgrade, an aide to one of the lawmakers said, speaking on condition of anonymity as their office was asked not to publicize the decision before the Pentagon publicly confirms it.

Lodewick did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In June, the Israel Policy Forum, a pro-Israel advocacy group and think tank, began urging members of Congress to oppose the plan to include the Jerusalem position among posts slated for downgrading. The effort managed to recruit lawmakers from both sides of the aisle against the Pentagon plan.

A prominent scientist who has denounced a congressional investigation into gain-of-function research helped fund Wuhan Institute of Virology gain-of-function work flagged by congressional investigators.

Peter Hotez, dean of the Baylor College of Medicine National School of Tropical Medicine, has been a fierce critic of potential hearings next year into a possible lab origin of COVID-19 and whether the National Institutes of Health prematurely discredited the hypothesis.

Hotez decried the hearings as nothing less than “a plan to undermine the fabric of science in America” in a viral tweet thread last week. Hotez also dismissed as an “outlandish conspiracy” the possibility that a lab accident sparked the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Hotez’s own 2012 to 2017 NIH grant for the development of a SARS vaccine had the stated aim of responding to any “accidental release from a laboratory,” in addition to a possible zoonotic spillover of the virus.

The $6.1 million NIH grant also raises the possibility of “deliberate spreading of the virus by a bioterrorist attack.”

“SARS outbreaks remain a serious concern mainly due to possible zoonotic reintroduction of SARS-CoV into humans, accidental release from a laboratory or deliberate spreading of the virus by a bioterrorist attack,” the grant’s description reads.

It’s not clear why Hotez has dismissed a possible lab release of SARS-CoV-2 as preposterous, after having conducted research for years to prepare for a possible accidental or deliberate release of SARS-CoV.

Hotez did not reply to emailed questions.

Hotez helped fund research on controversial chimeric coronavirus

While casting concerns about Wuhan’s labs as “fringe,” Hotez has not mentioned his own connection to a project involving a laboratory-generated chimeric SARS-related coronavirus that has come under Congress’ microscope.

The project was helmed by Zhengli Shi, a senior scientist and “virus hunter” at the Wuhan Institute of Virology nicknamed the “Bat Lady.”

As part of his NIH grant, Hotez subcontracted funding for research on combined or “chimeric” coronaviruses, a scientific paper shows. Hotez’s grant underwrote two of Shi’s collaborators on the project.

In the 2017 paper co-funded by Hotez, Shi and her colleagues generated a recombinant virus from two SARS-related coronaviruses: “rWIV1-SHC014S.”

It’s not clear whether the paper co-funded by Hotez should have been stopped under a temporary “pause” on gain-of-function work before 2017. However, some independent biosecurity experts have said research on this chimeric virus in some ways epitomizes lapses in NIH oversight of risky research in the years before the COVID-19 pandemic.

A prior study of one of the coronaviruses that comprised the chimera, WIV1, found it to be “poised for human emergence.” Another prior paper on the other coronavirus, SHC014, stated that its future study in lab-generated viruses may be “too risky to pursue.”

“The work here should have been at the very least, heavily scrutinized,” said David Relman, a Stanford microbiologist and biosecurity expert. “This work should have been heavily reviewed for [gain-of-function], and probably should have been subject to the pause prior to December 2017.”

Shi’s participation in the joint project was funded in part by EcoHealth Alliance, the paper shows. This NIH grant to EcoHealth — “Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence” — has garnered scrutiny for its research on manipulated novel coronaviruses in Wuhan labs.

Specifically, an EcoHealth Alliance grant report obtained by congressional investigators demonstrated that a WIV1-SHC014 chimera generated thousands of times the viral load and enhanced lethality in mice with human airway cells. Hotez serves on The Lancet COVID-19 Commission, a panel of experts working to scrutinize the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Commission Chair Jeffrey Sachs, a Columbia University economist, has in recent weeks called for an impartial investigation of the lab leak hypothesis.

Meanwhile, Hotez has suggested that the commission’s final reports should not incorporate Sachs’ concerns.

“Whenever I discussed the possibility that SARS-CoV-2 was a laboratory release, Hotez strongly rejected that possibility, but never explained to me or to the Lancet Commission that he actually had a grant that was based on that very kind of risk. He should certainly have been clear on that,” said Sachs.

Sachs said the 2017 paper generated questions about whether a potential conflict of interest should have been disclosed to the commission.

“I asked all of the Commissioners repeatedly to be transparent about any possible conflicts of interest,” Sachs added.

However, the bright moonlight from August's full Sturgeon Moon on Aug. 11 will complicate viewing the meteor shower's peak, which is why the Virtual Telescope Project is hosting a live webcast on Aug. 9, before the moon reaches peak brightness. The webcast will begin at 9 p.m. EDT (0100 GMT Aug. 10), weather permitting.

"Because of the full moon on the night of their peak, we will run this live feed two days earlier, so our satellite will be below the horizon, with still a very good number of meteors!" Gianluca Masi of the Virtual Telescope Project wrote(opens in new tab).

The Virtual Telescope Project's live webcast on Aug. 9 will begin at 9 p.m. EDT (0100 GMT Aug. 10) and share any meteors captured by the telescopes' wide-field cameras. You'll also be able to watch on Space.com, courtesy of the Virtual Telescope Project.

The Perseids meteor shower is active every year from mid-July to late August, when Earth passes through the debris remnants, or bits of ice and rock, left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. The Perseids peak as Earth passes through the densest and dustiest area of the comet's trail.

Most years, under clear skies and low light pollution, Perseid viewers can expect to see between 50 and 100 visible meteors, or "shooting stars," per hour at the shower's peak.

However, the bright light from the August full moon, which is also a supermoon (since the full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth in its orbit), will make it difficult to see many meteors. This year, viewers should expect the average number of visible meteors to linger between 10 and 20 per hour at best during its peak, according to a statement(opens in new tab) from NASA astronomer Bill Cooke.

Therefore, the best time to look for Perseids this year is in the pre-dawn hours when the moon is below the horizon, a few days before the peak. If you aren't able to go outside and enjoy the annual meteor shower, be sure to catch the Virtual Telescope Project's live webcast on Aug. 9, when the moon is expected to set about 60 minutes before dawn, offering a short window of dark skies to observe more meteors.

Combining foods is not an easy process

According to Azom, combining various food inks and optimizing them for 3D food printing is not an easy operation. The process mainly proceeds by the trial and error method. For this reason, Prof. Chua and his team worked with scientists from Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) to make the process go more smoothly.

RSM reduces the number of experiments required to robustly investigate the interrelationships between the desired response and composition of inks, thereby saving precious resources and time. A plant protein, three insect proteins, and an algae protein along with a traditional animal protein were chosen to fortify carrot powder. Usage of carrot as a vegetable food base to which different proteins and xanthan gum were combined served the purpose of adding flavour and nutrition as well as providing desired rheological properties for printing. The six protein inks were optimized with the addition of hydrocolloid xanthan gum which worked as an excellent shear thinning and hydrating agent. Printability and syneresis were the targeted responses for optimization by RSM with the second order multiple linear regression model. The rheology, microstructure and textural profile of optimised protein inks were also studied. This RSM-based approach for multi-component food ink optimization is envisioned to be widely adopted in 3D food printing.

Covid Vaccines More Likely to Put You in Hospital Than Keep You Out, BMJ Editor’s Analysis of Pfizer and Moderna Trial Data Finds

A new paper by BMJ Editor Dr. Peter Doshi and colleagues has analysed data from the Pfizer and Moderna Covid vaccine trials and found that the vaccines are more likely to put you in hospital with a serious adverse event than keep you out by protecting you from Covid.

The pre-print (not yet peer-reviewed) focuses on serious adverse events highlighted in a WHO-endorsed “priority list of potential adverse events relevant to COVID-19 vaccines”. The authors evaluated these serious adverse events of special interest as observed in “phase III randomised trials of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines”.

A serious adverse event was defined as per the trial protocols as an adverse event that results in any of the following conditions:

death;

life-threatening at the time of the event;

inpatient hospitalisation or prolongation of existing hospitalisation;

persistent or significant disability/incapacity;

a congenital anomaly/birth defect;

medically important event, based on medical judgement.

Dr. Doshi and colleagues found that the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA COVID-19 vaccines were associated with an increased risk of serious adverse events of special interest of 10.1 events per 10,000 vaccinated for Pfizer and 15.1 events per 10,000 vaccinated for Moderna (95% CI -0.4 to 20.6 and -3.6 to 33.8, respectively). When combined, the mRNA vaccines were associated with a risk increase of serious adverse events of special interest of 12.5 per 10,000 vaccinated (95% CI 2.1 to 22.9).

The authors note that this level of increased risk post-vaccine is greater than the risk reduction for COVID-19 hospitalisation in both Pfizer and Moderna trials, which was 2.3 per 10,000 participants for Pfizer and 6.4 per 10,000 for Moderna. This means that on this measure, the Pfizer vaccine results in a net increase in serious adverse events of 7.8 per 10,000 vaccinated and the Moderna vaccine of 8.7 per 10,000 vaccinated.

Addressing the difference between their findings and those of the FDA when it approved the vaccines, the authors note that the FDA’s analysis of serious adverse events “included thousands of additional participants with very little follow-up, of which the large majority had only received one dose”. The FDA also counted ‘people affected’ rather than individual events, despite there being twice as many individuals in the vaccine group than in the placebo group who experienced multiple serious adverse events.

The authors wonder where the U.S. Government’s own studies of adverse events are. They note that in July 2021, the FDA reported detecting four potential adverse events of interest following Pfizer vaccination – pulmonary embolism, acute myocardial infarction, immune thrombocytopenia and disseminated intravascular coagulation – and stated it would further investigate the findings. However, no update has yet appeared.

They also note that “while CDC published a protocol in early 2021 for using proportional reporting ratios for signal detection in the VAERS database, the agency has not yet reported such a study”.

The authors point out their results are compatible with a recent pre-print analysis of COVID-19 vaccine trials by Benn et al., which found “no evidence of a reduction in overall mortality in the mRNA vaccine trials”, with 31 deaths in the vaccine arms versus 30 deaths in the placebo arms (a 3% increase; 95% CI 0.63 to 1.71).

Noting their study is limited by the fact that the raw data from COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials are not publicly available, they stress that “given the global public health implications, there is an urgency to make all COVID-19 trial data public, particularly regarding serious adverse events, without any further delay”.

They conclude that there is a need for formal harm-benefit analyses for Covid vaccines, taking into account the different levels of risk of serious Covid and adverse events that exist between demographic groups. Ideally, this would be based on individual participant data, they say, though such data remain frustratingly unavailable.

Serious Adverse Events of Special Interest Following mRNA Vaccination in Randomized Trials

Abstract

Introduction: In 2020, prior to COVID-19 vaccine rollout, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and Brighton Collaboration created a priority list, endorsed by the World Health Organization, of potential adverse events relevant to COVID-19 vaccines. We leveraged the Brighton Collaboration list to evaluate serious adverse events of special interest observed in phase III randomized trials of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.

Methods: Secondary analysis of serious adverse events reported in the placebo-controlled, phase III randomized clinical trials of Pfizer and Moderna mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (NCT04368728 and NCT04470427), focusing analysis on potential adverse events of special interest identified by the Brighton Collaboration.

Results: Pfizer and Moderna mRNA COVID-19 vaccines were associated with an increased risk of serious adverse events of special interest, with an absolute risk increase of 10.1 and 15.1 per 10,000 vaccinated over placebo baselines of 17.6 and 42.2 (95% CI -0.4 to 20.6 and -3.6 to 33.8), respectively. Combined, the mRNA vaccines were associated with an absolute risk increase of serious adverse events of special interest of 12.5 per 10,000 (95% CI 2.1 to 22.9). The excess risk of serious adverse events of special interest surpassed the risk reduction for COVID-19 hospitalization relative to the placebo group in both Pfizer and Moderna trials (2.3 and 6.4 per 10,000 participants, respectively).

Discussion: The excess risk of serious adverse events found in our study points to the need for formal harm-benefit analyses, particularly those that are stratified according to risk of serious COVID-19 outcomes such as hospitalization or death.

The FBI conducted a raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property on Monday and searched for documents that are allegedly connected to an investigation.

“Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before. After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate,” Trump said in his statement. “It is prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don’t want me to run for President in 2024, especially based on recent polls, and who will likewise do anything to stop Republicans and Conservatives in the upcoming Midterm Elections.”

“What is the difference between this and Watergate, where operatives broke into the Democrat National Committee?” Trump asked. “Here, in reverse, Democrats broke into the home of the 45th President of the United States.”

The former president makes an excellent point, and the media should begin calling out this egregious action as the significant scandal that it is: Mar-a-Lagogate.

The current administration is exercising its power in a way that has been associated with criminal activity in the past.

FDA issues Jynneos EUA to stretch monkeypox vaccine supply

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted emergency use authorization (EUA) to Bavarian Nordics’ monkeypox vaccine Jynneos to be administered to adults intradermally. The move is meant to significantly increase the availability of the vaccine because it requires much smaller doses compared to being injected subcutaneously.

Immediately after Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra issued a determination under Section 564 of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) to give FDA Commissioner Robert Califf EUA authority, the agency announced the vaccine could be administered in smaller doses between the skin, rather than under it, to those 18 and older. The move will allow authorities to stretch out the number of available doses to five times the number that would be available if the vaccine were to be given exclusively through subcutaneous injection.

"In recent weeks the monkeypox virus has continued to spread at a rate that has made it clear our current vaccine supply will not meet the current demand," said Califf in an agency statement. "The FDA quickly explored other scientifically appropriate options to facilitate access to the vaccine for all impacted individuals. By increasing the number of available doses, more individuals who want to be vaccinated against monkeypox will now have the opportunity to do so."

The Biden Administration declared monkeypox a public health emergency (PHE) on 4 August but immediately warned that there aren’t enough vaccines to go around. So far, the two vaccines that are being administered for monkeypox are Jynneos and ACAM2000 which were initially developed for smallpox.

Jynneos is a modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) vaccine and was approved in 2019 to prevent smallpox in immunocompromised adults, as well as monkeypox. While the vaccine was initially given in two doses four weeks apart underneath the skin, a 2015 clinical study found that it was just as effective when administered intradermally in lower doses.

HHS notes that to date it has allowed more than 1.1 million doses of Jynneos vaccines on the market and of those more than 620,000 doses have already shipped. The department also says it has made the ACAM2000 vaccine and the smallpox antiviral drug TPOXX available to treat monkeypox patients while ramping up monkeypox diagnostics to 80,000 rapid tests a week.

“Today’s action will allow FDA to exercise additional authorities that may increase availability of vaccines to prevent monkeypox while continuing to ensure the vaccine meets high standards for safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality,” said Becerra after issuing the 564 determination which came after it was requested by HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Dawn O’Connell.

MI AG Dana Nessel Also Threatened Black, Republican SOS Candidate Kristina Karamo With “FELONY”Charges On LIVE Facebook Stream During Trump Rally Speech

100 Percent Fed Up reports – On Monday, it was revealed that Michigan’s lawless Democrat Attorney General Dana Nessel was attempting to shop around in Oakland Co., MI, for a special prosecutor who would agree to go after her political opponent, the Trump-endorsed Constitutional Attorney Matt DePerno, in the November 2022 election. Today, during an interview on WJR-760, Matt DePerno suggested that Dana Nessel could be charged with a huge FEC violation for using taxpayer money to smear a political opponent during a campaign.

On April 2, during a speech by MI Republican Secretary of State candidate Kristina Karamo at a Trump rally in Washington, MI, Nessel also threatened the young, black female Republican hoping to unseat Nessel’s far-left Democrat friend, SOS Jocelyn Benson.

While Karamo repeatedly brought the huge crowd to their feet with her barnburner speech, Michigan’s lawless Democrat Attorney General Dana Nessel was hosting a Facebook “watch party” with two of her Democrat friends, MI State Senator Jeff Erwin and Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum. As the trio sat and watched Kristina Karamo in real-time, Michigan’s top law enforcement officer, Dana Nessel (who behaves more like a Gossip Girl than an attorney general), threatened her with criminal action for calling out MI Democrat SOS Benson for threatening and accusing anyone who had legitimate questions about the results of the 2020 election of lying or pushing “disinformation.”

MI Dem Senator Jeff Erwin helped Nessel to set the stage for her threat by suggesting the wildly popular MI GOP candidate for SOS Kristina Karamo should “expect to be held accountable” for “pushing lies” about the election of 2020. MI Dem AG Dana Nessel jumped in to inform her co-host, Sen. Jeff Erwin, in front of her (very small) audience, “There’s actually more to it than that!” Nessel threatened, “And that’s that when you disseminate disinformation in a way that would cause a person to be deterred from voting, it’s an actual felony!” Instead of challenging her, the feckless Democrat senator shook his head in agreement as Nessel’s lapdog clerk friend Barb Byrum smirked.

12 sex offenders arrested after multi-agency investigation

Twelve sex offenders are in custody following a month-long, multi-agency investigation from July 5 through August 4 called Operation Lubbock Tornado.

The purpose of the operation, which included the Lubbock Police Department, the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the U.S. Marshals Service, and Homeland Security Investigations, was to ensure compliance by all registered sex offenders living within the City of Lubbock and unincorporated areas of Lubbock County.

The operation concluded with a four-day field/door-to-door compliance operation, beginning on August 1 and ending on August 4. The door-to-door compliance operation allowed teams of officers and agents to attempt in-person contact.

Six registered sex offenders were taken into custody at the beginning of July for registry violations. Five of the offenders were arrested for felony warrants for failure to comply with registry laws. One was arrested on a new charge of Indecency with a Child by Contact.

Six additional registered sex offenders, who were residing in city limits, were taken into custody during the field compliance operation. Four were arrested for felony warrants for failure to comply with registry laws, two were arrested for on-view felony violations of registry laws, and one was arrested on a municipal warrant for a 2021 citation issued by LPD for a violation of the City of Lubbock Child Safety Zone ordinance.

Following the door-to-door compliance operation, 16 new investigations of suspected Texas Sex Offender registry law violations were initiated by LPD officers and investigators.

Many of the Trump supporters outside Mar-a-Lago said the DOJ is trying to prevent the former president from running for office again

Dozens of supporters of former President Trump gathered outside his Mar-a-Lago estate on Monday after it was raided by FBI agents who were allegedly looking for classified documents.

The protestors traveled to Palm Beach, Florida, after the former president released a statement about the raid. Sources close to the matter told Fox News that the DOJ was investigating whether Trump had illegally taken classified documents to his private residence.

Fox News Digital's Matt Leach spoke to several supporters who voiced their disapproval of the raid.

J.D. Kennon had traveled across the state of Florida to show support for the former president.

"As soon as I saw it, I drove here from Tampa. This is nuts," Kennon said. "We all know what you're trying to do, DOJ. You're trying to create some kind of charge, so he's not going to be able to run for re-election."

Another Trump supporter, Mike Baffumo, expressed similar misgivings about the Justice Department.

"They're going to do anything they can to get him. They're terrified of him," Baffumo said. "And it's not because of any other reason than the policies that he supports: America First policies."

Supporters also objected to the raid happening when Trump was not on the premises - the former president was in New York City when agents executed the search warrant.
