Rep. Gregory Steube (R-Fla.) and other U.S. lawmakers are asserting that the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) refusal to provide records to The Epoch Times is illegal. The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) states that, with exceptions, agencies that receive satisfactory records requests “shall make the records promptly available” to the requester. But the FDA recently refused to provide results of COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring analysis to The Epoch Times, claiming that it could not separate the results from inter-agency and intra-agency communications, which are allowed to be withheld.

The Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline has restarted after concerns Moscow would use its vast energy exports to push back against Western pressure over its invasion of Ukraine.

Gas stopped flowing through the pipeline while it was undergoing annual maintenance, and while it has now resumed, the gas flow is expected to fall well short of full capacity.

 

Europe remains braced for possible further supply cuts during an economic tit-for-tat with the Kremlin.

 

Concerns that Russian supplies of gas sent through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline could be stopped by Moscow prompted the European Union to tell member states on Wednesday to cut gas usage by 15% until March as an emergency step.

"Russia is blackmailing us. Russia is using energy as a weapon," EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, describing a full cut-off of Russian gas flows as "a likely scenario" for which "Europe needs to be ready".

Nord Stream pipelines can be restored – Moscow

 

The process would be time-consuming and costly, according to Russia’s deputy PM

 

Russia may be able to fix the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which were damaged earlier this week, Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak said on Sunday.

 

“There are technical possibilities to restore the infrastructure, it requires time and appropriate funds. I am sure that appropriate opportunities will be found,” Novak told Russia 1 TV.

 

According to the official, however, the first step should be to determine who is behind the incident.

 

“As of today, we proceed from the fact that it is necessary, first of all, to figure out who did it, and we are sure that certain countries, which had expressed their positions before, were interested in it. Both the US and Ukraine, as well as Poland at one time said that this infrastructure is not going to work, that they will do everything to make sure of it, so, of course, it is necessary to seriously look into it,” Novak stated.

 

Citing German security services, Der Tagesspiegel newspaper earlier reported that the damaged routes could be permanently out of use if they are not repaired quickly, as salt water could cause corrosion.

 

The Danish authorities reported leaks on both the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines on Monday after a local pipeline operator noted a loss of pressure following a series of undersea explosions in the area. The Danish Energy Agency reported earlier on Sunday that the pressure on the Nord Stream 1 is stable and the gas leakage is over, while on Saturday, it said the Nord Stream 2 also stopped leaking gas.

 

The incident is widely considered to be the result of sabotage. Russia has called it a terrorist attack. While those behind it have not yet been identified, Moscow has blamed the US.

A law firm that caused a"serious breach of security" at the Guantanamo Bay prison campby sending anti-American literature to detainees is scheduled on Tuesday to hold a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, according to information obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

 

The firm, Paul, Weiss, has long been tied to the Clinton family, with its employees donating hundreds of thousands to its political campaigns and later cashing in on political appointments in the government.

 

The Nov. 19 fundraiser, which is being billed as a "conversation with Hillary," is currently being promoted on the Democratic presidential candidate’s website and costs attendees $2,700 per ticket.

 

The event is being held as the issue of Guantanamo prison returns to the political spotlight following renewed calls by the Obama administration to shutter the prison and transfer the remaining prisoners to the United States.

 

Paul, Weiss lawyers have played key roles in facilitating the release of inmates accused of committing acts of terrorism.

 

The firm has been at the center of efforts to free Guantanamo inmates and in 2006 was responsible for causing a "serious breach of security" at the prison camp when it was caught sending Arabic-language literature that encouraged prisoners to claim they were being tortured, according to reports.

 

The 18-page brochure, produced by Amnesty International, reportedly "portrayed America and its allies as waging a campaign of torture against Muslims around the globe," according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

 

It was discovered in the cell of a former inmate, Majeed Abdullah Al Joudi, an accused al Qaeda member who was freed from the prison in 2007 and sent to Saudi Arabia.

 

Once security personnel at the prison discovered the brochure, Al Joudi claimed that his lawyer, Julia Tarver Mason, a Paul, Weiss partner, had sent it to him. An investigation determined that the brochure was passed to at least a dozen other inmates, constituting what the camp’s former commander, Jay Hood, called a "serious breach of security."

 

The investigation further discovered that Mason had mailed the brochure to inmates using a privileged document categorization that prevents security personnel from screening the mail, a potential violation of a law that prohibits lawyers from providing clients with information pertaining to military operations and current events.

 

Paul, Weiss lawyers were banned from Guantanamo as a result of its actions, though the firm sued the government and later regained its access to the prison.

 

Additionally, Paul, Weiss lawyers won the release of at least two accused terrorists being held at Guantanamo, including Al Joudi and Yousef Al Shehri, who later resumed his tied with terrorists and was killed in a shootout after being freed from the prison.

 

The relationship between Paul, Weiss and the Clinton family stretches back years. Employees of the firm have donated more than $276,000 to Clinton’s political campaign, political action committees, and the Ready For Hillary Super PAC, according to financial disclosures.

 

The law firm has also donated to the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Health Access Initiative.

On February 1, 2020, when confronted with first evidence the Covid pandemic may have originated in the Wuhan Lab he funded via Daszak’s EcoHealth Alliance, Fauci organized a conference call, apparently to discuss how to suppress this dangerous information, since the trail led straight to them.

 

On Feb. 19, 2020, Daszak, Farrar and others published a letter in The Lancet, saying that “We stand together to strongly condemn conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin.”

 

This letter was then used to suppress and censor the Chinese lab leak theory in Mainstream Media and on social media for over a year. There was, and remains, no evidence for the “scientists’” claims that COVID-19 was a naturally occurring virus.

 

There is also evidence that US doctors and institutions knew they were working with the Chinese military on COVID-related research.

 

Now this — Just when you thought the world could not get any crazier, Dr. Peter Daszak was just awarded a new grant to study bat viruses in Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam.

Nord Stream Whodunnit: CIA Fingers the Ukrainians

An article from the English-language edition of German left-wing “Der Spiegel” magazine claims the US secret service tapped the Russians and learned they had expressed the suspicion that Kyiv was planning an attack on the pipelines. The Ukrainians are said to have even tried to rent a boat in Sweden for this purpose.

 

“The Germans were warned in summer by the CIA about a possible attack scenario on the Nord Stream pipelines. US Intelligence claimed to have intercepted Russian communications in which concerns were expressed about possible Ukrainian attacks on Western infrastructure. The Ukrainians allegedly tried to rent a boat in Sweden for this purpose.”

 

However, the US secret service did not classify this scenario as particularly likely, writes Swiss Weltwoche: “The CIA did not consider the scenario of a Ukrainian attack to be very credible”. Nevertheless, they apparently decided to pass this information on to the Germans.

Investigation Into FBI ‘Corruption’ Impeded by John Durham Investigation: Senator

 

Special counsel John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia collusion claims has prevented lawmakers from obtaining more information about possible misconduct at the FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ), said Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.).

 

“Our efforts in terms of investigating Hunter Biden and corruption within the FBI was certainly hampered because we had an active criminal investigation under John Durham,” Johnson told Newsmax on Friday, adding that Durham so far has successfully prosecuted few individuals in connection to his investigation.

 

Overall, Johnson said that he is “not particularly satisfied” with Durham’s probe and the lack of convictions, including what he described as a failure to secure a conviction for lawyer Michael Sussmann. Sussmann was accused by Durham of lying to the FBI while he was working for a law firm representing the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2016, but was acquitted in May of this year.

 

Durham was appointed in 2019 by then-Attorney General William Barr to investigate government misconduct in the FBI Crossfire Hurricane investigation. So far, the investigation has netted the conviction and sentencing of former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith, who received probation last year.

 

“And at a minimum, I certainly hope that whatever report [Durham] turns in to Attorney General Merrick Garland that that report be made public,” Johnson said. “The American public deserves to know the truth of the corruption was occurring within the Department of Justice in the FBI.”

 

Igor Danchenko, a Russian-born national who was the alleged primary source for the controversial dossier concocted by former UK spy Christopher Steele, is slated to go to trial later this month. Danchenko, who has pleaded not guilty, could face up to 25 years in prison if he is convicted.

Its the second time in six months that death records have hit a worrying level and now an official review into the circumstances hopes to reveal what went wrong.

 

A spike in the death rate of newborn babies across Scotland has prompted a review.

 

The Scottish Government announced the probe following higher-than-expected deaths in both September 2021 and March 2022.

 

It will cover all reported deaths in the year from April 2021, to find out what may have contributed to the increase after experts ruled out Coronavirus.

 

Figures show at least 18 babies under the age of four weeks died in March - a rate of 4.6 per 1,000 births - while as many as 21 died in September 2021, a rate of 4.9 per 1,000 births.

 

While infant death rates vary from month to month, the average among newborns is just over two per 1,000 births with neonatal mortality defined as death within 28 days of birth.

 

This is the second time since current records began in July 2017 and the second time in six months that the neonatal mortality rate hit 4.8 per 1000 live births, well beyond an upper warning threshold known as the “control limit”.

 

Coronavirus was suspected of playing a role but experts, while describing the figures as "really troubling" did not directly linked to the virus.

 

Healthcare Improvement Scotland has been commissioned to lead the review, which is expected to take up to nine months. Findings will be passed on to improve the care for mothers and babies.

‘We Own the Science’: WEF, UN Partner With Big Tech to Crush Researchers, Push Climate Hoax

 

A high-level UN secretary and World Economic Forum advisor boasted of a partnership with big tech to crush factual research and push WEF-ordained pseudo-science.

 

A World Economic Forum advisor attached to the United Nations says that the globalist organizations have partnered with Google to manipulate search engine results and crush scientists whose research counters their narrative on climate change. “We own the science,” the advisor boasted during a sit-down interview.

 

Melissa Fleming, the UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications and an advisor to the World Economic Forum, claimed that the globalist organizations “own the science” that supposedly spells climate disaster for mankind during a WEF panel on “tackling disinformation.”

 

Any scientific research that indicates humanity will face anything other than total doom should they not buy into the globalists’ dystopic agenda is conveniently categorized as “disinformation.” This, Fleming explained, is through the World Economic Forum and United Nation’s partnerships with Google and other Big Tech corporations.

 

“We partnered with Google,” Fleming said at the WEF panel. “For example, if you Google ‘climate change,’ you will, at the top of your search, you will get all kinds of UN resources.”

 

Fleming says that the partnership began when she and her globalist peers were “shocked” to see research countering their “climate change” narrative in Google search engine results. Apparently incapable of following the scientific process to dispel the research, Fleming says that they ordered Google to remove it.

 

“We started this partnership when we were shocked to see that when we Googled ‘climate change’ we were getting incredibly distorted information right at the top,” Fleming went on, before declaring that the World Economic Forum and United Nations “own the science.”

 

“So, we’re becoming much more proactive,” said Fleming. “You know, we own the science and we think that the world should know it.”

 

Crushing dissent, Fleming said, shouldn’t just be confined to climate “science.”

 

“It’s a huge huge challenge that I think all sectors of society need to be very active in,” Fleming told the WEF interviewer.

Last week, U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga declined to throw out any of the five charges filed against Danchenko after hearing arguments from Durham’s team and lawyers representing Danchenko.

 

Danchenko’s lawyers argued Thursday that all the charges should be dismissed because Danchenko’s answers to the FBI were technically true, if not necessarily illuminating. But Durham said that Danchenko’s statements, if examined in context rather than in isolation, will show that he knowingly lied.

 

“He knows exactly what the FBI is looking for, the context of those questions,” Durham said in a hearing last week.

 

Trenga acknowledged that the defense’s theory “can be a very persuasive, strong argument to a jury,” but said that ultimately the government met its burden to overcome a motion to dismiss. It will be up to a jury to determine whether the government can meet its burden of proving a crime beyond a reasonable doubt, a much higher standard. Trenga said he will revisit the issue during trial after the government presents its case.

 

A spokesperson for Durham’s team has not responded to The Epoch Times’ request for comment.

How the CIA failed Iranian informants in its secret war with Tehran==

Rather than betrayal, Hosseini was the victim of CIA negligence, a year-long Reuters investigation into the agency’s handling of its informants found. A faulty CIA covert communications system made it easy for Iranian intelligence to identify and capture him. Jailed for nearly a decade and speaking out for the first time, Hosseini said he never heard from the agency again, even after he was released in 2019. The CIA declined to comment on Hosseini’s account.

Hosseini’s experience of sloppy handling and abandonment was not unique. In interviews with six Iranian former CIA informants, Reuters found that the agency was careless in other ways amid its intense drive to gather intelligence in Iran, putting in peril those risking their lives to help the United States.

One informant said the CIA instructed him to make his information drops in Turkey at a location the agency knew was under surveillance by Iran. Another man, a former government worker who traveled to Abu Dhabi to seek a U.S. visa, claims a CIA officer there tried unsuccessfully to push him into spying for the United States, leading to his arrest when he returned to Iran.

Such aggressive steps by the CIA sometimes put average Iranians in danger with little prospect of gaining critical intelligence. When these men were caught, the agency provided no assistance to the informants or their families, even years later, the six Iranians said. Former chief of CIA counterintelligence, said any unnecessary compromise of sources by the agency would represent both a professional and ethical failure.

“If we’re careless, if we’re reckless and we’ve been penetrated, then shame on us,” Olson said. “If people paid the price of trusting us enough to share information and they paid a penalty, then we have failed morally.”

The men were jailed as part of an aggressive counterintelligence purge by Iran that began in 2009, a campaign partly enabled by a series of CIA blunders. Tehran has claimed in state media reports that its mole hunt ultimately netted dozens of CIA informants.

To tell this story,Reuters conducted dozens of hours of interviews with the six Iranians who were convicted of espionage by their governmentbetween 2009 and 2015.

Hosseini was the only one of the six men Reuters interviewed who saidhe was assigned the vulnerable messaging tool. But an analysis by two independent cybersecurity specialists found that the now-defunct covert online communication system that Hosseini used – may have exposed at least 20 other Iranian spies and potentially hundreds of other informants operating in other countries around the world.

This messaging platform, which operated until 2013, was hidden within rudimentary news and hobby websites where spies could go to connect with the CIA. Reuters confirmed its existence with four former U.S. officials.

These failures continue to haunt the agency years later. In a series of internal cables last year, CIA leadership warned that it had lost most of its network of spies in Iran and that sloppy tradecraft continues to endanger the agency’s mission worldwide. Four former intelligence officers interviewed by Reuters said the agency is willing to take bigger risks with sources when it comes to spying on Iran.

Much has been written about the decades-long shadow war between Iran and Washington, in which both sides have avoided a full military confrontation but have carried out sabotage, assassinations and cyberattacks. But the six informants, interviewed by Reuters for the first time, gave an unprecedented firsthand account of the deadly spy game from the perspective of Iranians who served as CIA foot soldiers.

The espionage busts could pose a challenge to the CIA’s credibility as it seeks to rebuild its spy network in Iran. The country’s state media publicized some of these cases, portraying the agency as feckless and inept.

Judicial Watch sues California for allegedly pushing YouTube to censor video

Judicial Watch on Thursday announced a suit against the California secretary of state for allegedly pushing social media giant YouTube to censor a video on election integrity that the group published.

 

The suit alleges that the California Office of Elections Cybersecurity (OEC), which Secretary of State Shirley Weber oversees, caused YouTube to remove the video. Judicial Watch contends that, in so doing, the state violated the group's First Amendment rights.

On Sept. 20, 2022 Judicial Watch posted a video featuring group President Tom Fitton discussing the vote-by-mail process and highlighting security risks and other complications in voting systems, the suit noted.

 

The video, titled "ELECTION INTEGRITY CRISIS Dirty Voter Rolls, Ballot Harvesting & Mail-in-Voting Risks!" was removed on Sept. 25, 2022.

 

The suit purports to reveal communications between OEC Social Media Coordinator Akilah Jones and Google/YouTube representative Andrea Holtermann in which the California state employee reports the Judicial Watch video and Holtermann confirms its removal from the platform.

 

The California Secretary of State's office said it did not comment on pending litigation.

 

"Smoking gun documents show California government officials, who were being advised by the Biden campaign PR operation, caused YouTube to censor a key Judicial Watch video just before the 2020 election," Fitton said.

 

"This egregious government censorship and election interference violated Judicial Watch’s civil rights, and our lawsuit seeks to stop and expose the growing corruption of leftist government officials colluding with Big Tech allies to attack the free speech rights of Americans," he concluded.

King Charles will not travel to next month’s COP27 climate summit in Egypt after UK Prime Minister Liz Truss “objected” to the avid environmentalist attending, a report on Saturday said.

Britain’s new monarch, who took the throne when his mother Queen Elizabeth died last month, had intended to deliver a speech at the November 6-18 gathering, the Sunday Times newspaper reported.

But the plan has been axed after Truss – who was only appointed prime minister by the late queen two days before she died – opposed it during a personal audience with Charles at Buckingham Palace last month.

 

The report comes amid speculation Britain’s new leader, already under fire over her economic plans which have sparked market turmoil, could controversially scale back the country’s climate change commitments.

Her newly assembled cabinet contains a number of ministers who have expressed scepticism about the so-called 2050 net zero goals, while Truss herself is seen as less enthusiastic about the policy than her predecessor Boris Johnson.

The Sunday Times said she is unlikely to attend COP27 – the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – at the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Britain hosted the last summit in the Scottish city Glasgow, when Charles, the late queen and his son Prince William all addressed the event.

Both Downing Street and Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the report.

 

The newspaper said the episode was “likely to fuel tensions” between Charles and Truss, but cited a government source who claimed the audience had been “cordial” and there had “not been a row”.

Meanwhile, a royal source told the paper: “It is no mystery that the king was invited to go there.

 

“He had to think very carefully about what steps to take for his first overseas tour, and he is not going to be attending COP (27).”

 

Under convention in Britain, all overseas official visits by members of the royal family are undertaken in accordance with advice from the government.

However, despite not attending in person, reports said Charles still hopes to be able to contribute in some form to the conference.

The king is a committed environmentalist with a long history of campaigning for better conservation, organic farming and tackling climate change.

Cybersecurity group Ghost Data released a new research report that was reviewed by Reuters about child sex abuse online that allegedly identified links to exploitative material containing child pornography. Subsequently, Dyson, Ecolab, and Mazda paused or pulled their ads or campaigns from the platform.

 

Brands pulling away from Twitter isn’t the only problem, though.

 

According to the Indian newspaper The Deccan Herald,

 

“Engaged in a fierce legal battle with Parag Agrawal-led micro-blogging platform over his termination of the $44 billion takeover deal, Musk’s criticism comes at a time when Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal said on Tuesday that the replies received from Twitter in the Child Pornography complaint were incomplete. The commission was not satisfied with it.”

 

The same publication calls on the Indian court system to review "several tweets on Twitter openly depicting videos and photographs of sexual acts involving children… Many tweets also depicted brutal rape and other non-consensual sexual activities with children and women.”

 

The DCW, or Delhi Commission for Women, has summoned the police. They’ve given Twitter until September 30 to give them a satisfactory response to their concerns as well. The Commission also has a problem with the images and videos appearing on Twitter. They want answers

 

as to why the videos were allowed on the platform instead of being removed.

 

According to The Daily Wire, “Andrew Stoppa, the founder of Ghost Data, said in a tweet Monday that he promised to release research about Twitter, adding the company ‘has a severe problem with child pornography.’”

 

Twitter has a problem, admits it, and needs to take the measures necessary to deal with it. Meanwhile, the TRUTH Social platform, founded by President Trump, has not been accused of having a child pornography problem.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has announced they are developing an AI tool to unmask anonymous writers.

 

A press release on Tuesday from the ODNI revealed that the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), their research and development arm, is starting work on the Human Interpretable Attribution of Text Using Underlying Structure program – HIATUS for short.

 

“Humans and machines produce vast amounts of text content every day,” with “text containing linguistic features that can reveal author identity,” a document from IARPA notes. The HIATUS tool would therefore use AI to identify anonymous writers via features such as “word choice, sentence phrasing [and] organization of information.”

“Think about it as like your written fingerprint, right?” program manager Dr Timothy McKinnon said in February. “What characteristics make your writing unique? So the technology would be able to identify that fingerprint compared against a corpus of other documents, and match them up if they are from the same author.”

 

McKinnon said that the AI program would be used by the intelligence community to track “disinformation campaigns,” and combat “human trafficking and other malicious activities that go on in online text forums.”

 

In the same vein, HIATUS would be able to detect whether text was not authored by a human, but generated by another machine.

 

The second use of the HIATUS program is to hide the identity of authors that it wanted to keep under lock and key. Using the same system, HIATUS could rewrite and modify text so that those same linguistic fingerprints in a text could be scrambled, making it impossible to attribute authorship.

 

With AI models that use deep learning, they often function as a “black box,” where the AI works perfectly well, but their methods are undecipherable to the human eye. HIATUS will be designed differently, implementing “explainable AI techniques” so that human operators can understand why it has identified a text as having a certain authorship, so that no mistakes are made.

 

20 different contracts have been awarded as part of the HIATUS project, including to groups such as Raytheon, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Univeristy of Southern California.

 

“We have a strong chance of meeting our goals, delivering much-needed capabilities to the Intelligence Community, and substantially expanding our understanding of variation in human language using the latest advances in computational linguistics and deep learning,” McKinnon concluded.

 

According to the timeline provided by the ODNI, the project will take at least three and a half years to conclude before the intelligence community will be able to use it, if it is successful.

Europe’s descent into deindustrialisation

The rapid economic collapse that Britain is facing is simply an accelerated version of what the whole of Europe is about to go through; unsustainable borrowing to fund the gap between high energy prices and what households can actually afford. With the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline, there is now no feasible way back. Europe can no longer physically import Russian gas – prices will remain high until Europe builds more energy capacity, which could take years.

What is likely to come of this? High energy prices will render European manufacturing uncompetitive. European manufacturers will be forced to pass through the higher energy costs in the form of higher prices and consumers will find it cheaper to buy products from countries with normal energy prices. The only logical European response to the threat of widespread deindustrialisation is to raise tariffs. This is the only way to equalise prices between more expensive European goods and cheaper foreign goods, therefore artificially supporting European manufacturing. This strategy will lower living standards, depriving Europeans of cheaper goods, but it will at least preserve some manufacturing jobs.

The only logical European response to the threat of widespread deindustrialisation is to raise tariffs

This process looks remarkably like the start of the Great Depression. In the 1920s, due to lopsided financial arrangements initiated in the Treaty of Versailles, western economies accumulated enormous amounts of debt. In 1929, the collapse of the American stock market removed one of the key remaining props and the western economies collapsed. Europe went first and, as trade dried up, America followed it down the hole.

Modern western economies have been accumulating debt for decades. But since the lockdowns in early 2020, this debt accumulation has gone into overdrive. In 2019, Eurozone government debt-to-GDP was 83.8 per cent. In 2020, after the lockdown bailouts were unveiled it shot up to 97.2 per cent. In the same period, Britain’s debt-to-GDP ratio went from 83.8 per cent to 93.9 per cent. These are the largest single increases in history. The run-up in debt during the lockdown was probably unavoidable. But it certainly triggered the beginning of the inflationary pressures we now see everywhere, especially because the lockdowns themselves completely demolished supply chains. So, more money chasing fewer goods. But what has happened since the start of this year is something else entirely.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has triggered an energy price war in Europe that is forcing even higher levels of government borrowing to cover energy costs. Unlike the lockdowns, these energy price increases are putting direct pressure on both prices and the trade balance between countries. Higher energy prices mean that Europe must send more euros and pounds abroad to get energy and so the value of imports rises and these higher import costs are fed through to consumers as businesses try to offset rising energy costs by raising prices. The situation is no longer remotely sustainable. This is almost certainly our 1929 moment.

In the 1930s, Europe fell into an economic black hole. Its economy collapsed and so all the trade that it did with the rest of the world was sucked down the hole with it.

Could the same thing happen today? The Office of the United States Trade Representative estimates that the United States engaged in over $5.6 trillion of trade – roughly 26 per cent of GDP – in 2019. In the same year, trade with the European Union was estimated at $1.1 trillion – that is approximately 20 per cent of total trade. As European falls into the hole, this trade will fall with it. The American economy, already frail, will likely fall too.

One key difference this time around is that there is a rival economic bloc that could be insulated from these dynamics, the emerging Brics+: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and Argentina – with Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia also joining the queue. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the Brics countries have been solidifying trade and financial ties and adding new members. It appears that the goal is for these economies to decouple as much as possible from the West. If they are successful in doing that – and it looks like they may be – they may avoid the depression. The Nord Stream sabotage could be the point at which future historians mark the end of western dominance.

HSI Baltimore’s Special Agent in Charge, James C. Harris III, reported the arrest of Marlon Pitts, aka “Cali”, a resident of Capital Heights, Maryland, on Aug. 11, as well as the arrests of Maurice Monroe, aka “Moeazy”, a resident of Washington, D.C., and Alexander Stevens III, aka “Cas”, a resident of Accokeek, Maryland, on Sept. 7. Harris reported the suspects were arrested and charged with the use of interstate facilities in the aid of a racketeering enterprise for their involvement and control of the “Triple X Party Kings”, a suspected Maryland-based sex-trafficking enterprise. Pitts has additionally been charged with sex trafficking of a minor and transporting an individual to engage in prostitution.

 

Pitts and Monroe are both suspected members of the notorious Crips street gang, and Stevens is a paraeducator in Prince George’s County.

 

“These apprehensions are a victory for the law-abiding citizens of Maryland and the Washington, D.C. metro area,” said Harris. “In today’s society, we have the ability to be ever-connected through social media. Our children and most vulnerable members of society are constantly at risk from predators. These arrests are the result of the amazing teamwork of HSI Baltimore and our federal, state, and local law-enforcement partners. Without their assistance, arrests like these would not be possible.”

The trio allegedly used the enterprise to promote, solicit, entice, coerce, and persuade adult and minor females to work for them as commercial sex workers. They allegedly recruited many of their victims through social media sites and through a network of previously recruited females.

 

Enterprise members and associates allegedly cooperated with one another to promote the commercial sex activities of the enterprise, primarily in and around Charles County, Maryland, Prince George’s County, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Pitts, Monroe, and Stevens allegedly advertised commercial sex parties at houses, motels, and a “studio.”

 

Allegedly, members of the enterprise acting as pimps encouraged adult and minor females working for them to have sex with clients for money inside of “VIP” rooms, and then required the females to provide a portion of the money earned to a member of the enterprise.

 

For years, Pitts, Monroe, and Stevens, have allegedly been responsible for various crimes related to the sex trafficking of numerous females.

 

HSI Baltimore worked with several federal, state, and local law enforcement partners in the investigation and apprehension of the trio.

 

Harris would like to thank for following agencies for their tireless support during this investigation: the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, the Department of Justice (DOJ) Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit, the Howard County Police Department, the Washington, D.C. Researcher Ariel Finkelstein analyzed the scope and profile of sexual abuse victims in Israeli local authorities’ social services departments in 2020, by sector or stream.

 

In Israel, there are a number of educational streams: Secular public school (Mamlachti), religious public school (Mamlachti Dati) and ultra-Orthodox schools, which are either private or semi-private.

 

The distribution of the data on sexual abuse was filtered by sector, according to the type of educational stream where the victims are currently or were educated in their childhood.

 

What does the data tell us about Israeli schools?

 

According to the survey, the rate of victims in the welfare services following sexual abuse is higher among the students of the religious public school stream, who mainly represent people who identify themselves as religious-Zionist. For every 1,000 students in the stream, there are 2.39 students who were treated in welfare services as a result of sexual abuse, higher than in ultra-Orthodox education (1.98), and more than double the amount in the secular public school stream (1.04).

 

The study found a correlation between religiosity and a higher proportion of males treated for sexual abuse, especially among children.

 

Among secular male and female students ages 3-18 who were treated following sexual abuse, boys make up less than a third (31%), while in the religious public school stream, boys make up almost half of the victims (48%), and those in the ultra-Orthodox stream make up over half (53%).

 

For every 1,000 boys in the religious public school system, there are 2.3 who are treated in welfare services for sexual abuse, compared to 2.07 among those in ultra-orthodox education and only 0.61 among boys in secular schools.

 

“The results of the study are a cause of great concern,” said Shmuel Shatach, Executive Director of Ne’emanei Torah Va’avodah.

So in order to escape the financial stranglehold of the "rules-based international order", China created:

  • AIIB as alt. to IMF & World Bank

  • CIPS as alt. to SWIFT

  • UnionPay as alt. to MasterCard & VISA

  • eYuan as potential alt. to USD

… and the BRI as the modern Silk Road.

Since China is the largest trading partner of most countries in the world, these countries were able to bypass the monetary system of Britain & Sons Ltd. and transact directly with China. They chose China's system due to better terms, fairness, respect and mutual benefits.

Former CIA Director and retired Gen. David Petraeus said on Sunday the invasion of Ukraine "looks very dire" for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is ramping up the war with a so-called "partial" military mobilization.

 

Petraeus told WABC talk-radio host John Catsimatidis that Putin is in an "irreversibly desperate" situation as Kyiv has been more successful than Moscow in utilizing its military capabilities.

 

"The bottom line is Ukraine has done vastly better than Russia has in mobilizing its capabilities in recruiting, training, equipping – helped by the US and NATO nations big time – organizing, and employing additional forces and capabilities," he said.

 

"The result of that is that Ukraine is now taking back from Russia territory that Russian forces captured since the unprovoked invasion of February 24, and Russia is very much on the defensive, losing territory that they were able to seize earlier this year," Petraeus said.

 

Putin ordered what he called a "partial" military mobilization earlier this month against Ukraine that included drafting 300,000 troops.

 

"At the end of the day, the situation looks very dire indeed for Vladimir Putin," Petraeus said.

 

Russia annexed parts of Ukraine in a ceremony on Friday after holding a referendum in the four Ukrainian territories that the international community denounced as a "sham."

 

Petraeus said the world should not discount Putin's threats to deploy nuclear weapons in an effort to retain the Russian-controlled areas, but he ultimately thinks the rhetoric will be "empty."

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is simultaneously speed dating and playing on multiple diplomatic, religious, and economic chessboards. The latest feather in his crown, his appointment as prime minister, aims to ensure that he can continue to do so with as little collateral damage as possible.

 

The appointment shields him from legal proceedings in the United States, France, and potentially elsewhere, including the International Criminal Court in the Hague, in which plaintiffs assert that Mr. Bin Salman was responsible for the 2018 killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

 

As a head of government, Mr. Bin Salman enjoys sovereign immunity, a status he could not claim as heir-apparent. While the legal maneuver is certain to succeed, it is unlikely to significantly improve his image tarnished by the killing and his domestic crackdown on dissent that in recent weeks produced outlandish sentences to decades in prison for little more than a tweet.

 

Reputation issues have not stopped Mr. Bin Salman from shifting into high gear as he pushes ahead with efforts to diversify Saudi Arabia’s oil-dependent economy; replace regional competitors like the United Arab Emirates and Qatar as the center of gravity at the intersection of Asia, Africa, and Europe; demonstrate his diplomatic clout and relevance beyond oil to the international community; and position himself and the kingdom as the beacon of a moderate, albeit an autocratic, form of Islam.

 

Mr. Bin Salman’s multi-pronged dash has produced mixed results.

 

In his latest foray onto the international stage, Mr. Bin Salman sought to display his diplomatic skills and relevance to the international community by securing the release by Russia of ten foreign nationals captured while fighting for Ukraine. The foreigners’ release was part of a Ukrainian-Russian prisoner swap negotiated by Turkey.

 

Although Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan al Saud rejected as “very cynical” assertions that Mr. Bin Salman was seeking to shore up his image by associating himself with the swap, it seems likely that Russian President Vladimir Putin was happy to give him a helping hand.

 

In a similar vein, people close to Mr. Bin Salman see mileage in asserting that the crown prince’s lifting of a ban on women’s driving and enhancement of women’s rights and professional opportunities is what inspired women-led protests in Iran that have entered their third week as well as Iran’s recent relaxing of its prohibition on women attending men’s soccer matches.

 

Ali Shihabi, an analyst who often echoes official Saudi thinking, claimed in a tweet that “Saudi reforms for women have had a big impact on the world of Islam. As the previous upholder of ultra orthodoxy #MBS’s dramatic changes have sent a powerful signal that has undermined Uber conservatives across the region like the Mullahs in Iran.” Mr. Shihabi was referring to Mr. Bin Salman by his initials.

 

The nationwide protests were sparked by the death of a young woman while in the custody of Iran’s morality police. The police had arrested 22-year-old Mahsa Amini for what authorities described as sporting an “improper” hijab.

US vows aid to Ukraine throughout war, urges EU allies to follow suit

 

Bloomberg reported on Sunday that the US is keen on making monthly transfers in aid to Ukraine in efforts to continue the war against Russia and it called on its EU counterparts to assist in the like.

 

According to Bloomberg, quoting sources familiar with the matter, the monthly amount is expected to be $1.5 billion.

 

Although just two days ago, the US approved $12 billion in aid of which $4.5 are supposed to cover the rest of the year, the report states that the White House has recently held private conversations with EU officials to press them to "do more", the sources told Bloomberg on condition of anonymity.

 

Since the start of the energy crisis, the EU has been struggling to provide Ukraine with the support it had promised to deliver. While some have been discussing strategies for keeping Ukraine's economy afloat, others have warned that Congress will certainly question this program on a long-term basis for burden-sharing among allies.

 

The IMF estimates that about $5 billion a month are required for Ukraine to maintain basic operations and the overall economy ongoing. Ukraine received $2 billion in aid last month, down from $4.7 billion in August, Ukraine's Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko said.

 

Last July, the bloc was heavily criticized by allies for failing to deliver on its commitments of nearly €9 billion ($8.8 billion).

 

EU plans for Ukraine

 

This coming week, EU leaders are scheduled to meet at a summit in the Czech Republic to discuss Kiev's financial needs, with a draft budget set at $38 billion for the year 2023.

 

Since the start of the war, the US has given Ukraine $16.9 billion for "security assistance", which includes a package worth $600 million in early September. Additionally, the White House asked Congress for $13.7 billion for "security and economic assistance" for Ukraine.

 

The US also approved on September 28 an extra $1.1 billion in security assistance to Ukraine, providing 18 new High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

 

HIMARS is capable of launching Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles with a range of up to 50 miles as well as a single Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile with a range of 186 miles. The US has been continuously supplying Ukraine with GMLRSs, while Kiev continues to make demands for ATACMS delivery.

 

Although the US and the EU have been quite supportive in financial terms, they have not met Ukraine's needs in terms of military equipment, as per Ukrainian claims.

 

On September 30, Military Watch Magazine published an article that detailed the reasons why it is improbable that the US and Germany would deliver Leopard II or Abrams Tanks to Ukraine.

 

It was reported on September 30 that the White House might sign an order that would provide Ukraine with the most up-to-date Abrams and Leopard tanks.

 

But the article states five reasons why it is improbable for this delivery to ever happen - one of the reasons being that the Western bloc does not want to compromise all the intelligence invested in the production of its most valuable tanks through capture.

 

Officials in charge of arranging the meeting were informed that funding levels from the EU would approximately be equal to the monthly $1.5 billion the US was willing to provide.

 

The sources told Bloomberg that this amount is required to cover basic public expenditures, such as schools, hospitals, and Ukraine’s electrical network.

 

Bloomberg says that a few diplomats have expressed frustration over the slow pace of financial decision-making and the show of apathy among some national governments toward the debate, especially as winter approaches.

 

Despite all the havoc over the €9 billion package, €1 billion were dispatched last summer and another €5 billion are already approved but not yet delivered.

 

The remaining €3 billion are still being discussed on whether to be sent as grants or loans.

 

In the first half of the year, the EU supported Ukraine with €1.2 billion in loans and billions in arms and weapons deliveries.

 

On the summit's agenda are also included plans to discuss Ukraine's post-war reconstruction, although some argue that Kiev's current needs are far more pressing.

California on Friday enacted a new law limiting prosecutors from using rap lyrics as evidence against criminal defendants.

 

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a series of bills, including AB 2799, which requires a pre-trial hearing to determine if hip-hop lyrics are relevant to a case. The bill was approved by state lawmakers in August.

 

"For too long, prosecutors in California have used rap lyrics as a convenient way to inject racial bias and confusion into the criminal justice process," Dina LaPolt, entertainment attorney and co-founder of Songwriters of North America, told Variety in a statement. "This legislation sets up important guardrails that will help courts hold prosecutors accountable and prevent them from criminalizing Black and Brown artistic expression. Thank you, Gov Newsom, for setting the standard. We hope Congress will pass similar legislation, as this is a nationwide problem."

 

Assembly member Reginald Jones-Sawyer Sr. championed the bill, saying it protects rap artists, who are mostly Black and Latino.

 

"Their stage name might be Little Murder, but that doesn’t mean they’re a murderer," Jones-Sawyer previously stated, Fox San Franciscoreported. "We found that the lyrics that they were using in the court to prosecute someone, those weren’t even that person’s lyrics. It was written by someone else. The music was written by someone else, and they were just performing it."

 

The bill came amid the prosecution of Jeffrey Williams, better known as Young Thug, and Sergio Kitchens, known as the rapper Gunna. The two high-profile rappers were arrested in Atlanta on gang charges and their lyrics were quoted in an indictment.

 

Supporters of the legislation said there is a difference between rap lyrics and what an artist does in real life.

 

"This is about justice. This is about making sure that the court system looks at that individual and not what people think about that individual," said Jones-Sawyer.

Plan to bring wives, children of Islamic State fighters home to Australia

 

A mission is underway to bring the wives and children of former Islamic State fighters home to Australia from refugee camps in Syria.

About 20 women and 40 children have been held in the detention camps there since the fall of the Islamic State in 2019.

9News understands Australian officials have already visited the camps earlier this year to verify their identities.

 

They are largely the Australian wives, sisters and children of Islamic State fighters, but many of them insist they were taken to the Middle East against their will.

Concerns have repeatedly been raised for their welfare.

The former federal government resisted calls for their repatriation, arguing there were security concerns in bringing people back from Syria.

 

But Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil told Nine newspapers the current government's overriding priority was the protection of Australians.

The families are likely to be brought back to Australia gradually in the coming months.

He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in communications in 1983, and then went on to enroll at the London School of Economics and Political Science from which Ian obtained his Master’s degree in international relations in 1987.

He launched his career upon graduation when he joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a TV producer, and for the job moved to Toronto, Ontario.

 

He went on to work for a Canadian company as a management consultant, and eventually moved to the US and joined ABC News in 1998, when invited to produce their show “World News”.

 

In 2008, Ian was invited to move to Washington, D.C. as the ABC News’ executive producer, and in 2018 he was offered to replace Kathy O’Hearn who served as the executive producer of the show “This Week with George Stephanopoulos”.

Love life and marriage with Susan Rice

 

Ian met his future other half, Susan Rice while in his senior year at Stanford University, as she was attending the same university. As Ian has stated in one of his interviews: ‘She struck me right away as someone unique. She was more aware and very confident.’

 

The two married in a private ceremony at St. Albans School’s chapel, attended by only their closest friends and family members, on 12 September 1992 after close to ten years of being together. In the years following their wedding, Susan gave birth to their daughter Maris Rice-Cameron and son Jake Rice-Cameron – Maris is currently attending Maret High School at which she is playing both basketball and soccer, and should matriculating in 2021.

Burkina Faso junta leader Damiba agrees to step down

 

Religious and community leaders said Sunday that Burkina Faso's junta leader Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba agreed to step down Sunday, two days after military officers announced he had been removed from power.

 

Following mediation between Damiba and the new coup leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, "Damiba himself offered his resignation in order to avoid confrontations with serious human and material consequences," the religious and community leaders announced in a statement.

 

Earlier, Traore said that order was being restored in the country following violent protests against the French embassy in Ouagadougou and days of clashes.

 

Security forces fired harmful tear gas at protesters outside the embassy, according to an AFP journalist.

 

Traore's side urged people to refrain from attacking the French embassy that was targeted after an officer involved in the coup revealed that France had sheltered Damiba at a French military base in the country and that he was planning a counteroffensive.

 

The French Foreign Ministry claimed the base had not hosted Damiba after his ouster on Friday. Damiba, which his whereabouts remain unknown, also denied he was at the French base, claiming that the reports were a deliberate manipulation of public opinion.

 

"We want to inform the population that the situation is under control and order is being restored," an army officer announced in a statement broadcast on national television.

 

"We invite you to continue with your activities and refrain from all acts of violence and vandalism… notably that against the French embassy and the French military base," the officer said.

 

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso's capital, was mostly calm on Sunday after sporadic gunfire throughout Saturday between opposing factions of the army.

 

On Friday, Traore announced that he led a coup against Damiba, dissolved the government, and suspended Burkina Faso's constitution and transitional charter.

 

Traore said a group of officers took the decision to topple Damiba over his inability to deal with the growing terror attacks in the country. The borders are currently closed indefinitely and all political and civil society activities have been suspended, he added.

 

This is the country's second military coup in eight months, with Damiba only assuming power in January after outsing former President Rock Kabore via a coup of his own in light of growing frustration over the state of the country's security.

 

On September 28, a convoy carrying supplies was attacked in the town of Djibo, leaving 11 soldiers killed and around 50 civilians missing.

 

It is noteworthy that more than 40% of the African nation, previously a French colony, is not under government control as most of the Sahel, including Niger and Mali, is suffering from the outcomes of the insurgency, which is beginning to spill over into the Ivory Coast and Togo.

Cameron of Victoria, British Columbia. The Rev. Kwase Thornell performed the Episcopal ceremony at the St. Albans School chapel.

Mrs. Cameron, 27 years old, is a management consultant at McKinsey & Company, the international management consulting company, in Toronto. She graduated from Stanford University and received a doctorate in international relations from Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. Her father, a retired senior vice president at the National Bank of Washington, is a former governor of the Federal Reserve. Her mother is a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution.

Mr. Cameron, 31, is a television producer in Toronto for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He also graduated from Stanford, and received a master's in international relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science. His father, who is retired, owned the Victoria Plywood Company, a lumber company in Victoria.

Supernova Cannon Expels Pulsar J0002

 

What could shoot out a neutron star like a cannon ball? A supernova. About 10,000 years ago, the supernova that created the nebular remnant CTB 1 not only destroyed a massive star but blasted its newly formed neutron star core a pulsar out into the Milky Way Galaxy. The pulsar, spinning 8.7 times a second, was discovered using downloadable software Einstein@Home searching through data taken by NASA's orbiting Fermi Gamma-Ray Observatory. Traveling over 1,000 kilometers per second, the pulsar PSR J0002+6216 (J0002 for short) has already left the supernova remnant CTB 1, and is even fast enough to leave our Galaxy. Pictured, the trail of the pulsar is visible extending to the lower left of the supernova remnant. The featured image is a combination of radio images from the VLA and DRAO radio observatories, as well as data archived from NASA's orbiting IRAS infrared observatory. It is well known that supernovas can act as cannons, and even that pulsars can act as cannonballs – what is not known is how supernovas do it.

DR Congo authorities report 14 casualties in militia attack

 

Local officials in eastern DR Congo reported on Sunday that fourteen civilians were killed "by machete" in an attack by local militias in Kyamata, in Ituri province's Banyali Tchabi chiefdom.

 

Jacques Anayey Bandingama, the head of a local youth group, said the suspected militia is the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an insurgent group that established ties with ISIS in 2018.

 

Bandingama added that among the victims included two others who were severely injured and that 36 homes in the village were set on fire.

 

The victims were later buried in a mass grave, according to Banyali Tchabi Chief Etienne Babanilau Tchabi.

 

"This attack threatens the return of my people," he told reporters. "My chiefdom is empty. Seventy percent of people are displaced."

 

For nearly four decades, the DRC has been enduring years of terrorist attacks from various terror organizations that emerged as legacies of previous wars.

 

With more than 120 terror groups across the region, the ADF figures among the most violent for its systematic and brutal attacks on civilians.

 

The movement has carried out several slaughters and bombing attacks in the East of the DRC, including in parts of Uganda where the borders of both countries cross.

 

The president of a cultural association in Banyali Tchabi, Faustin Mboma Babanilau, blamed the DR Congolese army for the lack of its presence in the area, adding that "in the office of the chiefdom, for example, there are only two soldiers," he said. "Go figure."

 

Lieutenant Jules Ngongo, a Congolese army spokesman, said, "Our services are on the ground and will be able to give us the final toll," he told reporters.

 

Despite efforts mobilized by the DRC and Uganda to launch a joint offensive against the ADF in November 2021, the terrorist organization persisted in its ongoing campaign of destruction and violence.

 

In order to stamp out the attacks coming from various terrorist organizations, the Congolese government decided last year to place both the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu under emergency administration called a "state of siege."

 

The process involved for the government to substitute senior civilian officials with members of the security forces. Despite this, attacks remained ongoing.

Israeli media: Logistics shortage hinders IOF West Bank offensives

 

Israeli "State Comptroller" Matanyahu Englman, who paid a surprise visit to the “Kfir” Brigade’s training bases in the Jordan Valley and to the “Yakir” base in the occupied northern West Bank, said his visit comes as part of an audit of the living conditions of draft and reserve soldiers, during which logistical support issues that require "immediate handling" by the military, such as the living conditions, medical treatment, and food, were exposed.

 

According to Englman, the logistical coverage of regular soldiers and reserves in the West Bank must be improved, adding, "There is no reason why reservists cannot get food as required in the first week of their work in light of the delays of the operating forces."

 

At the "Kfir" base, Engleman exposed several deficiencies that need to be attended to by the IOF.

 

“It is not possible to accept a reality in which in a heat of over 40 degrees in the Jordan Valley, troops will not have basic drinking water that is not boiling, and will have to make do with ineffective air conditioners, some of which are not repaired due to a lack of budget,” he said.

 

At the medical level, Englman added in his report the issue of IOF troops having to wait for “many months” before they could see a doctor.

 

Englman also found that troops get a ration of one meat portion per day, which is, according to him, an “insufficient quantity”.

 

In a similar context, Major General (Reserve) in the IOF army and former commissioner of soldiers’ complaints, Yitzhak Brik, told the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth earlier, “We are amid an existential threat. One of the most important challenges Israel is facing is the unpreparedness of the internal front which tends to be the focal point of the coming war and yet, it continues to suffer as a result of the Israeli army and government’s negligence, knowing that in any future war, it will be targeted with an average of 3,000 missiles per day and more than 100 sites inside Israel will be destroyed."

 

There is consensus among Israeli officials that the West Bank poses a great danger and challenge to the Israeli occupation.

 

Political affairs commentator for the Israeli broadcaster "Kan", Gilly Cohen, revealed that the Israeli occupation forces are "very concerned" about the growing frustration and volatile situation within Palestinian cities.

Western media says Russia blew up Nord Stream. But why would Moscow destroy pipelines it spent billons of dollars building?

Several days on from news of the explosions, details surrounding the deliberate sabotage of the two Nord Stream pipelines remain opaque and uncertain, although the Western media is certain of one thing – Moscow itself is to blame.

 

That's right, writers and editors either believe, or are pretending to believe, that Russia blew up infrastructure that it poured billions of dollars into building. The same country they routinely, and falsely, smear as a "mafia state."

 

One wonders have they paused to ponder what sort of crime syndicate would destroy one of its chief revenue streams? Especially afterspending over €23 billion on building the infrastructure, according to Gazprom's own statements.

 

That would, of course, require self-awareness. But there's little time for that when they have propaganda to push.

 

Moscow, as it happens, believes the truth lies elsewhere. As President Vladimir Putin said on Friday, “those who benefit are responsible, of course,” alluding to the involvement of what he called the "Anglo-Saxons." A Russian turn of phrase which basically means the US and its anglophobe allies, led by Britain.

 

Who REALLY blew up Nord Stream?

 

On the crucial question of why Moscow would deliberately destroy a gas pipeline into which it had invested billions to construct over several years, and which was a valuable source of income – by some estimates the natural gas still stored therein alone was worth up to €800 million – Western journalists remain at a total loss.

 

Several media outlets have accordingly published lengthy articles speculating on the Kremlin’s motives for doing so. But there has inevitably not been a single comparable investigation of the reasons why Russia wouldn’t do so, of which there are clearly a great many. There has also been no probe of the numerous actors with far more obvious motives, far more to gain by doing so, and the capability to implement such a plan.

 

This is despite several pro-Western sources actively praising the sabotage. For example, Radoslaw Sikorski, a European Parliament member and former Polish foreign minister, took to Twitter in the immediate aftermath and posted a photo of the environmentally destructive gas leak that resulted from the damage. His message was stark: “Thank you, USA.” Mysteriously, the post has since been deleted. Perhaps somebody has a word.

 

Of course, theexplosions occurred just before Poland and Norway opened an alternative pipelinerunning through Denmark that brings in gas from the North Sea rather than from Russia.

 

Moscow's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia claimed at a UN Security Council meeting on Friday that the Nord Stream pipeline leak is "beneficial" to the United States. He stated that American suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) "should celebrate" as the European Union moves away from Russian gas.

 

Nebenzia added that "it makes no sense for us to destroy the project with our own hands"and stressed Russia must be part of any investigation into the matter, along with the likes of Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. "If someone thinks that it is possible to conduct an investigation without Russia's participation, we have reasons to doubt the objectivity of this investigation," he said at the Security Council.

 

‘Hi-tech crewless vehicles’

 

There has also been zero acknowledgement that an attack on Nord Stream had long been a major concern for Gazprom’s executives, and Russian officials. While Moscow’s proposals to equip Nord Stream 2 with security measures, such as early warning systems, were framed as the Kremlin insidiously seeking to extend its military and intelligence infrastructure across Europe, fears of precisely what has come to pass turned out to be well founded.

 

In November 2015, a few kilometers east of the Baltic island of Öland and near where the pipeline runs,an armed remote-controlled mine disposal vehicle was foundduring an annual routine check of the structure. It was removed by the Swedish Armed Forces, but it has never been revealed how the explosive-packed vehicle ended up adjacent to Nord Stream, or when, why, who or what was operating it…

It’s a matter of record, though, that the US – which for decades aggressively opposed, both covertly and overtly, Western European projects to receive Russian energy –is a world leader in underwater drone innovation. In mid-June of this year, NATO’s annual maritime-focused BALTOPS exercise was conducted off the coast of Denmark.

 

The US Navy used the event “as an opportunity to test emerging technology,” in particular “the latest advancements in unmanned underwater vehicle mine hunting technology,” and “demonstrate the vehicle’s effectiveness in operational scenarios.” This exercise was coincidentally conducted very, very close to where the Nord Stream strings are located, and where the recent explosions occurred.

 

It’s likewise been confirmed that the Ukrainian military recently received extensive training from Britain’s Royal Navy in the use of “hi-tech crewless vehicles to help them hunt mines.”Soldiers learned how to operate the devices, which can operate at a depth of up to 100m – almost precisely the depth of the Nord Stream pipelines – and can detect, locate and identify mines using sensors, so the Ukrainian Navy can remotely destroy them with weapons systems attached to the drones.

 

Dare call it a conspiracy

 

Despite such obvious grounds for skepticism about Russia’s culpability in the sabotage, speculation online that Washington, or other hostile belligerents in the Ukrainian conflict, may in fact be responsible has been dismissedas a “conspiracy theory.”

 

What’s verifiably not a conspiracy theory is the CIA has a history of targeting pipelines, and gives no consideration whatsoever to the destructive consequences of such actions. Indeed, in the early 1980s, the agency hatched a devilish plan whereby Soviet agents were allowed to acquire control software from a Canadian company that was embedded with a Trojan horse virus.

 

This was used to run pumps, turbines, and valves on the Trans-Siberian gas pipeline. In June 1982, the CIA used the Trojan horse to disrupt a routine pressure test by changing pump speeds and valve settings to double the usual amount of pressure released, at a level far in excess of what pipe joints and welds could withstand.

 

This produced an explosion with the power of a three-kiloton nuclear weapon, significantly disrupted gas supplies to and from the Soviet Union, damaged Moscow’s overseas earnings and caused disruption to its domestic economy. It also had a significant psychological impact, as it left Soviet officials worried and uncertain about what other equipment – whether domestically produced or foreign-bought – could similarly be catastrophically flawed.

 

It should be considered rather suspect then that back in June the CIA apparently issued“vague” but “strategic” warnings to numerous European countries, including Germany, that both Nord Stream pipelines could be subject to attacks in the future. Why this information was neither publicized at the time, nor prompted Berlin to undertake security measures to prevent such an event, is anyone’s guess.

 

It’s not been confirmed whether the CIA identified in its warnings which state or non-state actor was the potential or likely future culprit, and the agency – typically so quick to blame Russia for any and all malfeasance at home and abroad – has remained eerily silent since the explosions took place.

 

US officials have also been uncharacteristically reticent to attribute blame to Russia, or indeed any party. A White House spokesperson simply stated on September 27 that: “Our partners are investigating this, so we stand ready to provide support to their efforts once they have completed their investigation.”

 

And the last thing that bears remembering is a comment made by President Joe Biden in early February, when he declared that if Russia invaded Ukraine, “there will no longer be a Nord Stream 2” as “we will bring an end to it.”

 

When asked how the US would be able to do that since the project was co-owned by Germany, Biden responded: “I promise you, we will be able to do that.”

On paper, President-elect Barack Obama's choice for United Nations ambassador has much in common with another boundary-breaking, African-American, Stanford-affiliated, female foreign policy expert with the same surname. But the similarities with Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice end there. Susan Rice brings to the U.N. job a career devotion to African affairs and eight years of experience in the Clinton administration.

• Rice was Clinton's top Africa diplomat when al Qaeda bombed the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, which led to her first middle-of-the-night official phone call — from Kenya's ambassador alerting her to the attacks. Working for Clinton's National Security Council, she also dealt with issues related to the 1994 Rwandan genocide, including the president's widely criticized decision not to intervene. In 1995, she was appointed the NSA's lead Africa expert; she became pregnant with her first child while in the post and didn't take leave until one day before her son was born. Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Dies Unexpectedly

 

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Max Baer, a Democrat, died unexpectedly overnight on Friday.

The 74-year-old passed away suddenly at his home near Pittsburgh, the court announced on Saturday.

The cause of death was not released.

Mr. Baer was set to retire at the end of 2022.

Baer was replaced by Justice Debra Todd, also a Democrat.

“Justice Debra A. Todd, who like Baer is a Democrat from Western Pennsylvania, becomes the new chief justice, the first woman to lead the state Supreme Court. Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Max Baer, a Democrat, died unexpectedly overnight on Friday.

Max Baer, the chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, died overnight Friday. He was 74.

 

Mr. Baer, first elected to the Supreme Court in 2003, was sworn in as its chief justice in 2021. He was set to retire at the end of 2022, after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75 on Dec. 24.

 

The state Supreme Court confirmed his death in a news release Saturday morning. A cause of death was not immediately available. He served as deputy attorney general for Pennsylvania from 1975 to 1980, and then moved to private practice for nine years. Mr. Baer was elected as an Allegheny County Common Pleas Court judge in 1989, spending most of his time in the court’s family division. He earned national recognition for his juvenile court reforms.

KUNSAN AIR BASE

F-16CM Landing Gear Failure & Ejection; Kunsan Air Base, Korea (HUD)

8,305 views Oct 2, 2022 At 1537 hours local time on 2 December 2019, an F-16CM Block 40, tail number 90-0714, crashed in between Runway 36 and Taxiway P on Kunsan Air Base (AB), South Korea. The Mishap Pilot (MP) was an instructor-pilot assigned to the 80th Fighter Squadron. The MP was returning to Kunsan AB for landing after completing a local continuation training sortie. Upon initial contact with the runway, the mishap aircraft's (MA) right main landing gear (RMLG) collapsed. The MA departed the runway and the MP successfully ejected. There were no casualties and no loss of civilian property. The MA, valued at $19.4 million, was completely destroyed. The MA was assigned to the 8th Fighter Wing, Kunsan AB, South Korea.

 

When the MA initially touched down on the runway, the RMLG collapsed and the MA yawed to the right. The MP attempted to keep the MA on the runway and take the MA airborne again, but was unsuccessful. The MP safely ejected from the MA suffering only minor injuries. The MA remained upright and skipped across the infield intermittently becoming airborne and settling back onto the field. The MA eventually stopped approximately 2,200 feet from the initial touchdown point, and the MA rotated 150 degrees from the initial runway heading. The engine continued to run for more than one hour after the mishap.

 

The Accident Investigation Board President found, by a preponderance of evidence, this mishap was caused by a failure of the RMLG downlock actuator, causing the RMLG to collapse, making the aircraft uncontrollable during the landing phase of flight. Specifically, the tension on the main landing gear was great enough to overcome the force of the downlock actuator, resulting in a collapse of the RMLG. This is a known issue for F-16C/D blocks 40/42/50/52 and is addressed by Time Compliance Technical Order 1F-16-2855.
