Walmart To Pay $3.1B In Opioid Lawsuits

Walmart agrees to pay over $3 billion in order to settle nationwide lawsuits over its role in the opioid epidemic.

On Tuesday, Attorney General Letitia James (D-N.Y.) announced the settlement after co-leading a coalition of more than a dozen Attorneys General to negotiate. A $3.1 billion total sum was announced.

James said that pharmacies, such as Walmart, have played an undeniable role in perpetuating opioids and that a price can’t be put on the lives lost and the communities that have been destroyed. She added that her state of New York will receive up to $116 million as part of the settlement.

On average, the opioid epidemic kills 80,000 Americans annually.

In a statement, Walmart promised that they would help find a solution to eradicating the opioid crisis.

“As one of the largest pharmacy chains in the nation, we remain committed to being a part of the solution, and this settlement framework will allow us to keep our focus on the health and well-being of our customers and patients, while making positive contributions to address the opioid crisis.”

This comes after Walgreens and CVS agreed to pay $5 billion each in order to settle lawsuits earlier this month.

Mortgage Rates Could Tank Home Prices by 20%, Fed Study Finds

US house prices could tumble as much as 20% in the wake of the surge in mortgage rates, according to research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. House prices, adjusted for inflation, soared during the pandemic by the most since the 1970s, analysis by Dallas Fed economist Enrique Martinez-Garcia showed. A “pessimistic” scenario where prices now retreat by 15% to 20% could subtract 0.5% to 0.7% from inflation-adjusted consumer spending, he wrote in a blog post Tuesday.

A hit of that order to consumption would in turn weigh on Fed policymakers’ ability to avoid a recession as they rapidly raise interest rates to bring inflation under control, Martinez-Garcia wrote. The Fed has raised rates by 3.75 percentage points this year as it tries to cool 40-year high inflation. That’s driven mortgage rates to the highest in more than two decades. Average 30-year fixed-rate mortgages now top 7%, from little more than 3% at the end of last year.

Left-wing comedian Patton Oswalt cracked a joke about the recent threat to Brett Kavanaugh’s life, saying the Supreme Court justice should simply arm up his family, “problem solved.”

Patton Oswalt tweeted his ill-timed joke in response to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) call to pass a bill that would expand security for Supreme Court justices and their immediate families in the wake of left-wing protestors demonstrating in front of their homes in response to the high court’s forthcoming decision on Roe v. Wade.

“Just put one door on Kavanaugh’s house and arm his family,” Oswalt tweeted. “Problem solved.”

The comedian appeared to be referring to recommendations that schools should arm up and employ more police personnel to combat mass shootings.

As Breitbart News reported, authorities have arrested a California man who reportedly told officers he wanted to kill the Supreme Court justice. The man was carrying at least one weapon near Kavanaugh’s Maryland home, according to reports.

Two people familiar with the investigation said the initial evidence indicates the man was angry about the recently leaked Supreme Court draft showing that the high court is preparing to overturn Roe. v. Wade, reported the Washington Post.

In May, then-White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that the Biden administration encourages “peaceful” demonstrations outside the homes of Supreme Court justices, despite the dubious legality of such actions.

Patton Oswalt was among the many Hollywood celebrities who publicly opposed Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. The comedian has also defended Antifa, comparing the violent, left-wing group to U.S. troops landing on Normandy during World War II.

It is now official. Republicans have won the House of Representatives. According to Decision Desk HQ, the GOP will hold at least 218 seats following yet another race called in their favor. Nancy Pelosi has been dethroned. The seat that pushed Republicans over the finish line was in California’s 3rd district, won by Kevin Kiley, who has been an outspoken fighter against Gavin Newsom in the state. Looking at the outstanding races left, it is probable that the GOP will reach at least 220 seats and may end up with as many as 222. Lauren Boebert in CO-3 is currently leading and is simply waiting
