Agents Replaying a Hollywood Drama

ONCE upon a time in Hollywood, a band of rebels left a lumbering old talent agency to start a hot little company of their own and in a dozen years or so managed to reach the top of the heap.

Twice upon a time, actually.

Just as Michael S. Ovitz and his peers walked away from the William Morris Agency to found Creative Artists Agency more than 30 years ago, Ariel Z. Emanuel and three associates left International Creative Management in 1995 to found Endeavor.

Creative Artists, under Mr. Ovitz and the people who succeeded him after he left in the mid-’90s, has long been the talent industry’s leader, staking its claim as a voracious (and, some detractors said during the Ovitz years, sometimes thuggish) conglomerate that changed the way talent is bought and sold here.

Along the way, Endeavor became Creative Artists’ doppelgänger. With only a third as many agents and a much smaller client list, the junior agency is known for the sort of quick thinking, ferocity and barely bridled ambition that carried Creative Artists to the top.

But Endeavor now has to show that it has staying power, and how it accomplishes that task offers a window onto the shifting landscape of talent brokering in Hollywood.

While Creative Artists is aggressively expanding into areas like sports and corporate consulting, Endeavor says it has smoothed its rougher, frat house edges and is trying to take advantage of ownership deals, in which Endeavor clients take a stake in their work rather than just being paid a handsome fee.

Mr. Ovitz says that Mr. Emanuel “and his crew have done the same thing we did, and people don’t really give that enough weight. In some strange, blasé way, it’s taken for granted.”

For his part, Mr. Emanuel says he takes nothing for granted. “I feel like we’re just getting started,” he says in an interview in the hilltop home of one of his partners, Patrick Whitesell.

Acknowledging speculation that Endeavor is being groomed for a sale or merger, the partners said they had routinely discussed that possibility in the past without finding a combination that overcame the ego and turf issues endemic to the talent trade. They assert that no sale or merger is in the works.

Meanwhile, however, the entertainment business itself is transforming, as digital media supplant conventional television networks and movie theaters. Mr. Emanuel insists that Hollywood’s future looks robust, despite a pullback among outside film investors and the determination of television executives to trim budgets.

MR. Emanuel, a close-cropped, sharp-tongued model for the fictional Ari Gold of the HBO series “Entourage,” says it’s all simply a matter of supply and demand.

“You have the same number of content creators,” he says. “But distribution has grown.”

Mr. Emanuel thinks rising opportunity has surpassed the supply of talent, putting clients and their agents (at least those he deems desirable) on the verge of new prosperity, because they can more readily sell their wares to a broader universe of cable television, Internet and independent film buyers. “The lines have crossed,” he says.

Even so, on the conventional film front this year, Endeavor ranks behind Creative Artists, which had about 10 directors and 13 stars in movies like “Iron Man” and “What Happens in Vegas.” Endeavor landed six directors and nine stars in projects like “The Incredible Hulk” and the comedy “Tropic Thunder.”

A closely watched ranking of television client deals compiled annually by TVtracker.com put Endeavor in the top slot for last year, with a slight edge over Creative Artists in overall network and cable deals 376 to 359 and a clear edge in the representation of “showrunners,” the writer-producers who supervise television series.

Endeavor is paid packaging fees on “Boston Legal,” “Gossip Girl” and others, while Creative Artists reaps the fees from shows like “E.R.” and “Cold Case.”

All of this amounts to real money, by the way.

Endeavor’s revenue is estimated to be a bit more than $100 million a year, well under half that of Creative Artists, according to people at both agencies who spoke anonymously to avoid conflict within either company. (Endeavor partners declined to give a figure, and Michael Mand, a spokesman for Creative Artists, declined to comment.)

Both William Morris and International Creative Management, two agencies that rank behind Creative Artists and Endeavor in the Hollywood pecking order by some measures, appear to have more revenue than Endeavor, thanks in part to what agents like to call “legacy” steady cash flow from movie and television work booked over long decades of representation. (The ticklish game of ranking agencies is something of an apples-and-oranges exercise, as each firm has pursued different strategies.)

Virtually all of Endeavor’s profit after salaries and bonuses is distributed to partners annually. Without much in the way of physical assets or retained earnings, Endeavor, like many agencies, is an ephemeral business.

It has tried to leverage its smaller size by building an esprit de corps reminiscent of Creative Artists’ early days. Its offices, designed by the architect Neil Denari, feature sculpted spaces and white halls. Departments are deliberately mixed: television packaging agents work side-by-side with those representing movie writers or major stars.

Promotion from within is the rule about 35 of the 80 or so agents started in the mailroom or as assistants and the agency attempts to govern itself democratically (Hollywood egos notwithstanding).

Mr. Emanuel and Mr. Whitesell, without corporate titles, join Rick Rosen of the television department and Adam Venit, a motion picture talent agent, as fixed members of a seven-member executive committee. The remaining slots are filled for two-year terms according to a vote by the agency’s 26 partners.

Several former clients privately maintain that Endeavor’s internal coordination lags. They note that Creative Artists is quicker to match its clients with each other, for instance, by pairing an available script with an agency-represented director. Endeavor leans more toward individual representation, with agents inclined to advance and protect their own clients.

Yet Endeavor continues to hold its own with clients. In the last few rounds of client swapping, Endeavor lost Ashton Kutcher to Creative Artists, which lost Robert De Niro to Endeavor. Two longtime agents joined William Morris from Endeavor, which signed three others from International Creative Management.

In the last three months, Endeavor also picked up a string of high-profile comedians that includes three A-listers: Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Amy Poehler.

As it mixes it up with other agencies, Endeavor is also maturing into something more than an upstart. “The firm grew up,” said Thomas Strickler, a movie agent who joined Mr. Emanuel, Mr. Rosen and David Greenblatt (who has since left Endeavor) as a co-founder of Endeavor. That has meant trying to abandon rougher elements of a corporate culture that landed the agency in serious trouble about seven years after its birth.

IN April 2002, an agent named Sandra Epstein sued Endeavor, alleging, among other things, sexual harassment and pointing out that at one point she had been the lone woman among a dozen male agents.

According to court papers, Ms. Epstein ultimately settled her claims for $2.25 million. But not before underwriters at Lloyd’s of London, Endeavor’s insurer, canceled the agency’s employment practices policy, provoking a second suit by Endeavor against Lloyd’s and a law firm the insurers had been paying to represent the agency.

In depositions and court filings in the second suit ultimately settled under undisclosed terms Ms. Epstein and other Endeavor employees described office escapades that included rampant pot-smoking, obscene hazing at corporate retreats, sexual frolics on desks, and one agent demanding that his assistants book prostitutes for him.

Ms. Epstein said Mr. Emanuel blocked her from sending a script about the Navy Seals to the actor Wesley Snipes. “That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” the agent was reported in the papers to have said. “Everyone knows that blacks don’t swim.”

Endeavor’s partners said they were blocked by legal agreements from discussing the case.

The case came at a time of upheaval at Endeavor, but it weathered its problems. Today, about half of Endeavor’s agents and a quarter of its partners are women. Managers at the company say that it has no African-American agents but that it has had some in the past. Women who work at the firm say things have changed.

“Man or woman, it doesn’t matter,” said Nancy Josephson, a partner who joined the company in 2006. “I can’t tell you the number of times Ari Emanuel has said to me, ‘I’ve got your back.’ ”

Today, Endeavor like some of its competitors has focused on what it calls “the entrepreneurial client.” That list includes stars and other creative clients who have a stake in the enterprises most closely associated with them, like the writer-producer-performer Ricky Gervais (“The Office”) and the former supermodel Tyra Banks (“America’s Next Top Model”).

Ideally, such clients create and often retain ownership in projects that can bounce through iterations on movie screens, the stage, cable television or the Internet generating revenue for the agency and its allies at each turn.

The British comic Mr. Gervais, for instance, was a writer, director and star of “This Side of the Truth,” a movie set for next year about a man who invents lying in a world where it didn’t exist. Earlier this month, he brought his live stage show to Hollywood and used the visit to grab media attention for another of his films, “Ghost Town.”

Endeavor also has to retain a foothold in the television industry as it is reinvented, with more reality programming and a shift away from the big networks. When Endeavor was founded, Mr. Rosen notes, it focused on representing television writer-producers, had few filmmakers and had virtually no movie stars in its stable. “We’re now close to 50-50,” Mr. Rosen said of its film and television businesses.

In today’s cable-driven world, television agents are pursuing more buyers who generally pay less than the conventional broadcast networks, while also navigating the business of making television pilots a craft that was heavily damaged by the recent writers’ strike.

While television has become challenging, Endeavor has had an easier time expanding its film business by raiding agents from other firms an expensive proposition, though Mr. Emanuel insists that his agency has never “paid retail” for new agents.

A tipping point came when Mr. Whitesell arrived from Creative Artists in 2001, bringing with him much-needed stars like Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Christian Bale, star of the new Batman movie, “The Dark Knight.” John Lesher (now a top executive at Paramount) joined the next year, bringing sophisticated filmmakers like David O. Russell. (Mr. Venit had arrived several years earlier, bringing Adam Sandler to the agency.)

The accretion led, finally, to this year’s strong showing in the high-stakes summer season, following a spectacular performance at the Oscars in 2007, when clients took a raft of awards for films like “The Departed” and “Little Miss Sunshine.”

But some key Endeavor partners are in their 40s, approaching the age at which Mr. Ovitz and his acolytes at Creative Artists began to itch for new pursuits.

For example, Mr. Emanuel whose brothers are Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois and the bioethicist Ezekiel Emanuel hasn’t been without distractions. He has been at the front of Senator Barack Obama’s Hollywood campaign but says he doesn’t intend to make politics a full-time occupation or to put aside a personal client list that includes Larry David, Mark Wahlberg and Martin Scorsese.

Mr. Venit and Mr. Rosen both say they intend to stay put. And Mr. Whitesell, a gravelly voiced 43-year-old, concurs, saying that Endeavor has become too interesting of late for him to even think about leaving.

“People want to be a part of it,” he says.

This failure by adults to recognize the importance of Sex Education and pleasure generates incredible suffering in children such as discrimination and abuse. This must change, but for that to happen a global awareness campaign on the absolute necessity of a sexual education worthy of its name is required. It's a human right.

Ok so I have an idea for an operation since this is taking a ridiculous amount of time and there has been no word back. Guy claims to have paid 15.4 million in cash (counterfeit) to buy Boyd gaming thereby acquiring the Imperial Palace Casino in Biloxi. He further claims that he cut staff pay substantially and uses the casino and hotel primarily for human trafficking. Some of the tactics, techniques, and procedures associated with black bag operations are lock picking, safe cracking, key impressions, fingerprinting, photography, electronic surveillance (including audio and video surveillance), mail manipulation (flaps and seals), and forgery. The use of "black bag jobs" by the FBI was declared unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court on 19 June 1972 in the Plamondon case, United States v. U.S. District Court, 407 U.S. 297. This is a great quote by Dr. Joycelyn Elders who was the first African American appointed as Surgeon General of the United States in 1993. She was forced to resign a year later because of her outspoken views about drugs and sexuality, and we can thank the ultra-conservative movement in the U.S. for that. She advocated drug legalization, distributing contraception in public schools, and condoned the idea of teaching schoolchildren to masturbate as a way of avoiding the spread of the AIDS virus. Dr. Elders even publicly criticized the Catholic Church for its opposition to abortion. As the 20th century was coming to an end, she was undoubtedly a controversial figure who was not afraid to speak her mind.

When, in 1994, Dr. Elders was invited to speak at a United Nations conference on AIDS, she was asked whether it would be appropriate to promote masturbation as a means of preventing young people from engaging in riskier forms of sexual activity, and she replied, "I think that it is part of human sexuality, and perhaps it should be taught." SexEd Day, International Awareness campaign for Childhood Sexuality Education

On Nov. 20, 2015, the first annual SexEd Day (sex education day) (see SexEd Day) was introduced by Rael and launched by the International Raelian Movement (IRM). Rael has long advocated the necessity of early sex education for children and young adults in order to eliminate fear, frustration, and taboos, which are factors that not only contribute to sexual repression but also to sexual inequalities, discrimination, and crimes. Children are especially vulnerable when kept in the dark regarding their sexuality. The goal of this annual campaign is also to promote a more holistic approach to sex education that emphasizes pleasure as opposed to procreation. Comprehensive sex education for children and adolescents must be adapted to their age and culture, and must emphasizes pleasure, fulfillment, and well-being as part of any well-structured sexual health programs.

In 2009, a UNESCO report based on 80 different studies and written by renowned experts in the field of human sexuality was published with recommendations for early sex education. The report showed that in countries where students completed comprehensive sex education, they were found to be more assertive and better communicators. These same experts even recommended that masturbation be taught to children as young as 5 years old! Comprehensive sex education is precisely what the Raelian philosophy has been advocating for decades, including the teaching of masturbation to children from age five as well as sensual education and pleasure. Unfortunately, some of the recommendations found in the UNESCO report were met with strong opposition from conservative and religious groups, and were ultimately removed because UNESCO could not withstand the pressure. Consequently, a watered down version of the report was later published, thanks to these religious groups who are specialists at spreading fear propaganda and at promoting guilt and shame on all matters related to sexuality and pleasure. The reality is that no anti-sex or sex-phobic religion should have any say or authority on these matters.

To this end, the annual SexEd Day was also launched to decry this type of censorship and blackmail resulting from pressure by a religious institution. The International Raelian Movement has been calling for the original version of the UNESCO report on sex education to be published again (see Unesco-09) and, once and for all, to respect the views of sex experts who are in a better position to understand the benefits that early sex education for children can provide. In addition, the IRM has also been calling for all governments to implement these fundamental guiding principles. As expressed by Rael, "What a five-year-old should learn is something that must be decided by scientists, not by priests who just want to keep the population under the power of superstitions from the Middle Ages."

Today, the state of sex education in the United States is unique because less than half of the states require schools to teach SexEd. As a result, a lot of information about sexuality is withheld from children and not only does this not contribute to keeping them safe, but it also keeps them ignorant. This is tragic! How could such an advanced society lag behind when it comes to sex education? One obvious answer is religion.

The problem in the U.S. is that there is still no separation of Church and State, and much less a separation of Church and Sex. Our politicians, who have deeply rooted religious convictions and most of whom are uncomfortable with the subject, are often pressured by the powerful Christian lobby to write antiquated laws that reflect what they deem to be “morally” right. This is what makes this country so contentiously divided on the issue of SexEd, why it’s up to the states to decide whether to implement it in schools or not, and what puts sex education all over the map, with no national consensus.

It goes without saying that scientific facts and research studies should always trump religious beliefs and traditions otherwise everything gets censored. Unfortunately, science doesn’t always have the last word and religions continue to play too powerful a role in how sexuality should be viewed, discussed, understood, and expressed. This will have to change soon because the more a given religion will keep negative views about sex, the more it will emphasize shame, guilt, and stigma around it… and this level of ignorance will always lead to lack of tolerance for sexual diversity and to sexual violence.

For many years now, there have only been two approaches to sex education in the United States: comprehensive sex education and abstinence-only sex education. Comprehensive sex education covers abstinence as a choice option, but also informs adolescents about human sexuality, age of consent, and the availability of contraception and techniques to avoid contraction of sexually transmitted infections. Abstinence-only sex education, on the other hand, emphasizes abstinence from sexual activity prior to marriage and rejects methods such as contraception. And despite research showing the ineffectiveness of the abstinence-only-until-marriage programs, and showing that abstinence-only education as a state policy is ineffective in preventing teenage pregnancy and may actually be contributing to the high teenage pregnancy rates in the U.S., the government continues to keep its head in the sand and fund such programs for states that agree to promote abstinence in their school curricula. In other words, states that do not subscribe to abstinence-only education will not receive any funding from the government.

Providing a quality and solid sex education foundation is the only way to ensure that young people will grow into sexually healthy adults, especially when research data shows that the United States ranks first among developed nations in rates of both teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and when statistics show that 95% of all Americans have sex before marriage and about half of all young people begin having sex by age 17. Additionally, providing a well-structured early sex education recommended by international experts can also help to stop all sex crimes plaguing our society.

Human sexuality has always and will continue to play a major role in everyone's life regardless of whether we are very young or very old, a man or a woman, or where we are from. It is an integral part of what we do and who we are…an integral part of being human. And knowledge, informed practice, and understanding can contribute greatly to our sexual well-being and help everyone become less judgmental of other people’s lifestyles, reproductive decisions, and sexual preferences, and respect and accept people of all sexual orientations and all sexual minorities.

Swisher has known Musk for over 20 years and has interviewed him

extensively. Lately though, he hasn't been such a fan of her coverage of him.

Since buying Twitter, Musk (a self-proclaimed "free speech absolutist") has invited back some users who had previously been banned or otherwise restricted. He's fired employees who have tweeted criticisms of him, and he posted (and then deleted) what one commentator called "the most expensive tweet ever": a conspiracy theory about Nancy Pelosi's husband. Expensive because there's speculation that that tweet, and many others from Musk, have caused advertisers to flee Twitter in droves.

"Now he's antagonizing advertisers and calling them 'woke,'" Swisher told correspondent Luke Burbank. "Advertisers will advertise on Satan, Inc., if it'll sell a Fitbit. I mean, honestly!"

A documented rise in hate speech since Musk's takeover came to a head this past week after the rapper formerly known as Kanye West tweeted a photo of a swastika, prompting Musk to suspend his account.

Swisher said, "Anything that's more moderated – and I'm using word 'moderated,' not 'censored' – tends to do better with users, with advertisers, with the entire experience."

But Musk thinks Twitter's prior management unfairly stifled conservative speech. On Friday, when reporter Matt Taibbi tweeted a trove of internal emails purporting to prove Twitter's "liberal bias," Musk retweeted the thread approvingly.

Alex Stamos, the former chief security officer at Facebook, says the Russian hacking of Democratic National Committee emails in 2016 made Twitter wary of foreign influence campaigns. "In the days before the 2020 election, Twitter made the decision to not allow people to post the New York Post story about Hunter Biden's laptop until they could try to figure out whether or not that was part of a government influence campaign," he said. "And then they decided, since it was going to get covered, that they should allow it to be posted. So, they did make a mistake. But the idea that it affected the election is just ludicrous."

For some, Twitter's suppression of that article became a First Amendment issue. But Swisher thinks that misses the point: "It's gotten sucked up into a free speech conversation or First Amendment conversation, largely by people who've never read the First Amendment. Because it's about 'government shall make no law.' That's all it says, folks. And so, companies certainly can, and they certainly do."

And speech on Twitter can have real-world implications. For years, Twitter's "blue checkmarks" have verified that a user is who they say they are. But when Musk started selling the checkmarks without actual verification, a slew of imposter accounts sprang up, like one posing as Eli Lilly tweeting out "Insulin is free now," causing the pharmaceutical company's stock price to tumble. In fact, due to security concerns, CBS News briefly paused its Twitter use two weeks ago.

Burbank asked, "What is your employment status with Twitter as of right now?"

"I'm still technically an employee, but I'm on a suspended status until January 4th, when they will put us on severance, if we sign a severance agreement."

Stamos said of Musk, "He's actually a really bad manager, and that's kind of shocking to me, how bad he is at the human management side of this. The odds of them being able to execute well over this next year, I think, are very long, unless he decides to bring in a CEO to calm things down. And it's clear that's what he's going to have to do at Twitter if they're going to try to stabilize and stop the bleeding of all of this talent that they need to be able to execute."

Burbank asked Swisher, "How does he strike you as a person?"

"Oh, it depends on what day," she replied. "I sometimes think of Silicon Valley as a lot of smart people working on stupid things, and Elon was working on smart things."

A bipartisan group of senators plans to attach significant marijuana legislation to "must-pass" year-end bills, Axios has learned.

Over a thousand seals have been found dead on the coast of the Caspian Sea, local authorities in Russia’s southern Dagestan Republic said on Sunday. The region’s Ministry of Environment says natural factors are likely behind the incident.

Zaur Gapizov, the general director of the Caspian Nature Protection Center, said the mammals seem to have perished at least two weeks ago and been washed ashore by a storm. “There are no signs that they were killed, no remains of fishing nets have been found,” he noted, adding that local authorities are continuing to examine the coast. Gapizov estimated that “most likely, the number of dead seals is much higher” than the 1,700 already found.

On Saturday, Dagestan’s Ministry of Environment said “the condition of the internal organs of the examined seals did not confirm the hypothesis that they had been intoxicated with heavy metals or pesticides.”

The ministry collected “a large volume of samples,” which were sent to laboratories in Moscow and the city of Astrakhan in southern Russia.

According to the Caspian Nature Protection Center, the total number of Caspian seals does not exceed 70,000. The mammals are considered endangered and are included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list.

US Intelligence Chief Predicts 'Reduced Tempo', Waning Morale Of Russian Forces Entering Winter

Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines has revealed the United States intel community's current assessment that it expects the intensity of the Ukraine-Russia war to wane going into the winter months, only to ramp-up again during counteroffensives in the spring.

"Once you get past the winter, the sort of question is: What will the counteroffensive look like?" Haines said before the Reagan Defense Forum in Simi Valley, California on Saturday. "We expect that, frankly, both militaries are gonna be in a situation where they’re gonna be looking to try to refit, resupply, in a sense, reconstitute, so that they’re kind of prepared for that counteroffensive."

"But we actually have a fair amount of skepticism as to whether or not the Russians will be, in fact, prepared to do that," she continued. "And I think most optimistically for the Ukrainians in that time frame."

Likely US intelligence's "skepticism" over Russian forces' capabilities at this point is related to being beat back in parts of the Donbas over the last two months, and particularly with last month's recapturing of the city of Kherson after Moscow ordered a large-scale pullback.

She further assessed that while the cold winter months will have a greater impact on Russians' morale, she hasn't seen the Ukrainian side lost their will, despite devastating missile attacks on the national energy grid meant to impose additional collective suffering.

"They’re doing this in order to undermine the Ukrainian will in effect, and I think we’re not seeing any evidence of that being undermined right now at this point," she said.

Additionally she underscored that Putin is at this point more keenly aware of Russian forces' "lack of performance and the fact that they did not accomplish more" but yet still may not be fully accepting of "just how challenged they are" - particularly the poor performance of ammo supply and logistics lines.

Speaking of Putin's chief objectives in the Ukraine invasion, Haines posed, "The challenge is, what does that mean for his near term [and] are they going to be as expansive as they were at the beginning?"

NATO has doubled down on its determination to eventually add Ukraine to its membership, renewing its 2008 commitment to that goal in a meeting between the foreign ministers of the alliance in Bucharest, Romania this past Tuesday.

Antiwar’s Dave DeCamp writes:

The Romanian city was where NATO initially made the promise to Ukraine back in 2008, and at the time, US officials acknowledged that attempting to bring the country into the alliance could spark a war in the region.

“We made the decision in Bucharest in 2008 at the summit,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday. “I was there … representing Norway as Prime Minister. I remember very well the decisions. We stand by those decisions. NATO’s door is open.”

In a joint statement, the NATO foreign ministers, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, said that they “reaffirm” the decisions that were made at the 2008 Bucharest summit.

It has become fashionable among the mainstream western commentariat to claim that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had nothing to do with NATO expansion, but as recently explained by Philippe Lemoine for the Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology, that’s a completely false narrative that requires snipping past comments made by Putin out of the context in which they were made. Many western experts warned for years in advance that NATO expansion would lead to a conflict like the one we’re seeing today, and they were of course correct.

The recent push to expand NATO in Ukraine along with nations like Finland and Sweden as justified by “Russian aggression” is a good example of what professor Richard Sakwa has called the “fateful geographical paradox: that NATO exists to manage the risks created by its existence.” As the late scholar on US-Russia relations Stephen Cohen explained years before the Ukraine crisis erupted in 2014, Moscow sees NATO as an “American sphere of influence,” and the expansion of NATO and NATO influence as expansion of that sphere. It reacts to this with hostility just as the US would react to China or Russia building up aggressive military alliances on its borders, and arguably with vastly more restraint than the US would.

Other future examples of Sakwa’s fateful geographical paradox are likely to include the push to reconfigure NATO into an alliance dedicated to “restraining” China, which of course means halting China’s rise on the world stage and working to constrict, balkanize and usurp it. A recent Financial Times article titled “Washington steps up pressure on European allies to harden China stance” gives new detail to this agenda:

The US is pushing European allies to take a harder stance towards Beijing as it tries to leverage its leadership on Ukraine to gain more support from Nato countries for its efforts to counter China in the Indo-Pacific.

According to people briefed on conversations between the US and its Nato allies, Washington has in recent weeks lobbied members of the transatlantic alliance to toughen up their language on China and to start working on concrete action to restrain Beijing.

US president Joe Biden identified countering China as his main foreign policy goal at the start of his administration, but his efforts have been complicated by the focus on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

But with Russian president Vladimir Putin’s invasion in its 10th month, Washington was making a concerted effort to push China back up Nato’s agenda, the people said.

43-year-old school administrator raped student, furnished minors with alcohol, investigators say

A school administrator in Georgia who has spent more than two decades in her position has been charged with statutory rape, child molestation, and furnishing minors with alcohol following a Halloween party that allegedly took place a few weeks ago.

On November 9, Murray County Schools Superintendent Steve Loughridge contacted Sheriff Jimmy Davenport to investigate a complaint he had received from a parent, alleging that a minors had been furnished with alcohol at a recent Halloween party.

Because the sheriff's office provides resource officers to the school district, Davenport feared a conflict of interest. So he handed off the investigation to the Conasauga District Attorney's Office. What the D.A.'s office found is quite disturbing.

According to reports, Rachelle Louise Terry, 43, of the Murray County School District attended a Halloween party with minor students whom she supplied with alcoholic beverages. Even worse, she allegedly had a sexual relationship with one of the students at the party as well.

The exact date and location of the party are both unknown.

The day before Thanksgiving, Terry — who lives in Chatsworth, Georgia, about 90 miles north of Atlanta — turned herself in to Murray County Jail on five counts of purchasing alcohol for minors and five counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She has also been charged with child molestation and statutory rape.

The age of consent in Georgia is 16, and any sexual relationship between a school staff member and a student is generally illegal. However, Georgia law reportedly stipulates that, in order to violate that law with a student at least 16 years of age, school administrators or teachers must have "supervisory or disciplinary authority" over that student. The age of the alleged victims in this case and their connection to Terry remain unknown.

Terry, who is married, is listed as the director of federal programs and enrollment for MCSD. The Daily Mail reports that she has held the position for 22 years and earns approximately $110,000 a year.

District spokeswoman Derichia Lynch confirmed that Terry has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending further investigation.

"Because she is under contract, her leave must be with pay until a hearing can be conducted," Lynch stated.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has also been apprised of the allegations and is asking for tips.

Widespread Power Outage in North Carolina Investigated as a ‘Criminal Occurrence’

Authorities in North Carolina said Saturday that a power outage affecting tens of thousands of people is being investigated as a “criminal occurrence.”

Gov. Roy Cooper issued a statement Sunday morning about outages and said that an investigation is underway.

He wrote that “I have spoken with Duke Energy and state law enforcement officials about the power outages in Moore County. They are investigating and working to return electricity to those impacted. The state is providing support as needed.”

In a social media post, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office said that power outages were being reported after 7 p.m. ET on Saturday in the county. It said that instances of “vandalism” were discovered, though they were not described.

“As utility companies began responding to the different substations, evidence was discovered that indicated that intentional vandalism had occurred at multiple sites,” the sheriff’s office said. “Moore County Sheriff’s Deputies and various other law enforcement agencies within the county responded to the different areas and are providing further site security.”

It added that people “with any information about this act of violence should contact the Moore County Sheriff’s Office at 910-947-2931.”

It appears that no suspects have been arrested or identified in connection to the incident. No motive has been publicly revealed.

Nearly 40,000 customers were without power in Moore County as of Sunday morning, according to an outage map provided by utility Duke Energy. Moore County is located near the city of Fayetteville.

Duke Energy’s website said that the estimated restoration will occur by 10 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Power crews reported “multiple equipment failures” that are impacting Moore County power stations, Duke Energy spokesman Jeff Brooks told WRAL-TV. “We are also investigating signs of potential vandalism related to the outages,” Brooks added.

Authorities also told residents to stay off the roads and said that some sewer services in the area aren’t working. The reason why, officials said, is because some traffic lights aren’t working.

“There are multiple accidents that have occurred,” the town of Southern Pines said on Facebook on Saturday night.

“We also advise staying off the roads if you are in a safe location,” the post said. “There are multiple accidents that have occurred. Might we suggest that some of you update your Christmas lists to include a refresher book on rules of the road?! Hint…when a traffic light isn’t working, each driver should treat the intersection as if it has a 4-way stop sign.”

A social media alert from the Village of Pinehurst instructed residents to stay off the roads and treat intersections as four-way stops. It said that more police officers were called to assist.

Secret Service Finds Hundreds of Pages on Hunter Biden Gun Incident

The U.S. Secret Service (USSS) has located hundreds of pages of records on President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden and a discarded gun.

Hunter Biden’s sister-in-law, Hallie Biden, reportedly threw his handgun in a trash container in Delaware in 2020. Agents with Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) were reportedly involved.

Based on the reports, a transparency group called Judicial Watch filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Secret Service asking for records related to the incident, including reports, telephone logs, and witness statements.

The Secret Service, in its initial April 2021 response, said it located records and would process them. But more than a year later, in October, it said the response was sent in error and that the agency had never actually located any responsive records.

The third change came in a recent court filing that was lodged after Judicial Watch sued over the matter. The Secret Service now says more than 100 records have been located.

“Since the Complaint was filed, the Parties have conferred about the intended scope of Judicial Watch’s FOIA request and, in response, USSS has run supplemental searches and located over 100 records, totaling over 400 pages, potentially responsive to Judicial Watch’s request under the clarified understanding of that request,” the Secret Service and Judicial Watch said in a joint case report filed on Nov. 10 with the U.S. court in Washington, D.C.

“The Secret Service’s changing story on records raises additional questions about its role in the Hunter Biden gun incident,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a statement. “One thing is clear, Judicial Watch’s persistence means the public may get records that the Secret Service suggested didn’t exist.”

The Secret Service did not respond to a request for comment.

The Secret Service told The Epoch Times in September, in response to a FOIA request similar to the one from Judicial Watch, that it “searched all Program Offices that were likely to contain potentially responsive records, and no records were located.”

In 2021, a Secret Service spokesperson told The Epoch Times via email that the agency “maintains there was no Secret Service involvement in the matter.”

The ATF has already acknowledged having records of the incident, but a judge ruled that the agency did not have to disclose them.

Arizona polygamous leader Samuel Bateman had 20 wives, most under age 15

An Arizona polygamist cult leader has been accused of marrying 20 women, most of whom are under the age of 15, as well as his daughter.

Samuel Rappylee Bateman, 46, has been accused of marrying up to 20 women and girls as young as 9-years-old, according to an FBI affidavit filed Friday in Washington.

The affidavit, obtained by the Salt Lake Tribune, outlines horrifying accusations of incest, group sex acts involving adults and children and child sex trafficking against Bateman.

Bateman leads an offshoot group of the Mormon Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), but has been held in an Arizona jail since the FBI raided his two Colorado City homes in September.

Agents looked for evidence of underage marriages or sexual relationships between adults and children, according to the Tribune.

While Bateman has not been charged with sexual abuse, the affidavit claims the FBI has probable cause to believe he and others transported minors between Arizona, Utah, Nevada and Nebraska to engage in illicit sexual conduct between May 2020 and November 2021.

Bateman “began to proclaim he was a prophet” in 2019, and gained about 50 followers and over 20 wives, most of whom are minors under the age of 15, according to the affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Dawn A. Martin.

The majority of his wives are daughters, sisters and mothers from two extended polygamous families, according to the affidavit.

Martin was provided audio recordings of a November 2021 conversation in which Bateman said “Heavenly Father” had instruction him to “give the most precious thing he has, his girls’ virtue,” to three of his adult male followers.

Bateman then allegedly watched the three adult men have sex with his daughters, one of whom was only 12-years-old, according to the affidavit.

He allegedly went on to say his daughters had “sacrificed their virtue for the Lord” and that “God will fix their bodies and put the membrane back in their body. I’ve never had more confidence in doing his will. It’s all out of love,” Martin quoted Bateman as saying.
