Fulton County grand jury forewoman Emily Kohrs admitted in a recent interview that she told her boyfriend about the proceedings from a recent Georgia case revolving around former President Donald Trump and the 2020 election.

โ€œI told my boyfriend at one point during proceeding, during all this, I came home and I told him,โ€ Kohrs told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) in an interview Tuesday afternoon. โ€œDo you know that if I was in a room with Donald Trump and Joseph Biden and they knew who I was, they would both want to speak to me.โ€

Kohrs was referring to the special grand juryโ€™s work after serving as the leader of the 23-person special grand jury, which had met behind closed doors from May 2022 to January 2023 to hear testimonies from 75 witnesses.

Lawyers are preparing to quash any possible indictments after the Georgia grand jury forewoman went on a crazy media tour.

 

Last week a Fulton County judge ordered parts of the grand jury report in the garbage Trump 2020 election investigation to be released as the prosecutor considers charges against Trump and his allies.

 

The grand jury concluded that โ€œone or more witnessesโ€ lied under oath and recommended perjury indictments.

 

โ€œA majority of the Grand Jury believes that perjury may have been committed by one or more witnesses testifying before it,โ€ the report said.

 

โ€œThe Grand Jury recommends that the District Attorney seek appropriate indictments for such crimes where the evidence is compelling,โ€ the report said, according to CNBC.

 

The forewoman of the jury, Emily Khors, suggested that the jurors recommended indicting Trump in an interview with the New York Times.

 

Khors did not offer any other details about who specifically was recommended for charges.

 

Khors did a series of disastrous media interviews on Tuesday.

 

She sounded like a 14-year-old child as she giggled about the possible indictments against Trump.

 

โ€œI will be sadโ€ if the DA decides against bringing charges against Trump, Khors said to CNN.

 

โ€œPersonallyโ€ฆ I wanted to hear from the former president. But honestly, I kind of wanted to subpoena the former president, because I got to swear everybody in. Lawyers close to several Republican witnesses in the Fulton County investigation into post-election interference by former President Donald Trump and his allies are preparing to move to quash any possible indictments by the district attorney, Fani Willis.

 

Their attempt to do so would be based on recent public statements by the forewoman of a special purpose grand jury, Emily Kohrs, according to two people familiar with the discussions who spoke with CBS News.

 

The special purpose grand jury served as an investigatory body that could recommend charges but could not indict. Willis is now deciding whether to pursue charges and open a โ€œregularโ€ criminal grand jury, to seek possible indictments against Trump or others based on the special grand juryโ€™s recommendations, compiled in a report it made following the completion of its work.

 

She has not yet decided whether to pursue charges and has only said a decision on how to proceed is โ€œimminent.โ€

 

If she were to pursue charges, lawyers for several witnesses are preparing to move to quash indictments, based on the forewomanโ€™s comments, which they would argue taint any such charges and the investigation.

Putin confirms Xi visit to Moscow amid fears of Chinese intervention in Ukraine War

 

The Russian invasion is rapidly nearing it's one year anniversary on Feb. 24 and shows no signs of ending in the near future.

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed this week that Chinese President Xi Jinping would visit Moscow amid fears that Beijing may soon expand its support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

 

Putin did not specify the exact timetable of the visit but indicated that Moscow was expecting a visit from the head of state.

 

"We are expecting the President of the People's Republic of China in Russiaโ€ฆ We know [Xi] has a domestic political agenda to attend to, but we assume that once the issues on that agenda are dealt with โ€ฆ we will proceed with our plans for personal meetings, which will give additional impetus to our relations," Putin said, according to The Hill.

 

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi did travel to Moscow this week, fueling further concerns that the oriental superpower may indeed be preparing some form of aid to the invading Russian forces.

 

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier this week warned China against providing "lethal support" to Putin. China has already provided "non-lethal support to Russia for use in Ukraine," he contended.

 

"The concern that we have now is based on information we have that they're considering providing lethal support, and we've made very clear to them that that would cause a serious problem for us and in our relationship," he continued.

 

The Russian invasion is rapidly nearing it's one-year anniversary on Feb. 24 and shows no signs of ending in the near future.

 

China, meanwhile, has drawn concerns in recent years over its ambitions to control Taiwan and, more recently, a string of aerial incursions by suspected surveillance balloons into U.S. airspace.

COVID-19 linked to 40% increase in autoimmune disease risk in huge study

Catching COVID-19 may raise the risk of developing autoimmune disease by 43% in the months following the infection, according to the largest study of its kind.

 

Now, researchers have analyzed the health records of 640,000 people in Germany who caught COVID-19 in 2020 and 1.5 million people who didn't knowingly catch the coronavirus that year to explore how the infection might affect the risk of developing any of 30 autoimmune conditions.

 

They examined the rate at which people were newly diagnosed with autoimmune diseases in the three to 15 months after they tested positive for COVID-19. They compared these rates to those of the people who hadn't caught COVID-19. Roughly 10% of the participants in each group had preexisting autoimmune diseases.

 

Among the people with no history of autoimmunity, more than 15% of people who'd caught COVID-19 developed an autoimmune disease for the first time during the follow-up period, compared with roughly 11% of the people who hadn't caught COVID-19. In other words, the COVID-19 group had a 43% higher likelihood of autoimmune disease than the control group.

 

Among those with existing autoimmunity, those who caught COVID-19 had a 23% higher chance of developing an additional autoimmune disease in the follow-up period.

 

COVID-19 was most strongly linked to an increased risk of vasculitis, which causes inflammation of the blood vessels; the previously infected group had a 63% higher rate of a type of vasculitis called arteritis temporalis than the uninfected group did. Autoimmune-driven problems with the thyroid, a butterfly-shaped organ in the throat that releases hormones, and the skin condition psoriasis were also strongly linked to prior COVID-19 infection, as was rheumatoid arthritis, which causes swelling in the joints.

 

"These findings just cannot be ignored," Subramanian said. "We need to pursue research into how COVID-19 is potentially triggering autoimmunity because many people are continuing to suffer from the effects of COVID-19." There are several hypotheses as to how COVID-19 might trigger autoimmunity, and it's possible that different mechanisms affect different organ systems, the researchers noted.

 

"Understanding how COVID-19 impacts autoimmune disease risk will help in executing the prevention measures and early treatments to prevent associated morbidity and mortality," said Jagadeesh Bayry, a professor of biological sciences and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad who was not involved in the study.

 

Other viral infections, including influenza, have been linked to autoimmune disease, so more research is needed to establish what effects are specific to COVID-19, Bayry said. Future studies should also examine these links in diverse populations, beyond people living in Germany, Subramanian said.

 

Although the large sample size makes this a strong study, it is worth noting that it "only shows an association between COVID-19 and autoimmune disease but doesn't prove causality," said Dr. Atsushi Sakuraba, an associate professor of gastroenterology at the University of Chicago who was not involved in the research.

 

Another limitation is that there may have been people in the study's uninfected group who actually caught COVID-19 but developed little to no symptoms, and thus didn't know they'd been infected. The study also can't show whether different coronavirus variants are linked to a higher or lower risk of autoimmune disease, or how COVID-19 vaccination affects that risk. >>18395684

Vanuatu has become one of the first Pacific countries to allow businesses to grow medicinal cannabis and hemp, after signing into law policies governing the import, cultivation and manufacture of the plant.

It paves the way for the country to enter the global cannabis market, with some hoping the plant can become a major cash-crop for local communities.

 

The government has made at least five 10-year licenses available for businesses to purchase โ€“ two for growing medicinal cannabis and three for hemp production โ€“ for 10 million Vatu each ($123,000).

 

Businesses are also expected to pay an additional 10 million Vatu every year as a license renewal fee.

 

Medicinal cannabis is most often used to relieve chronic pain and has also been used to treat anxiety, cancer-related symptoms, epilepsy, insomnia and multiple sclerosis (MS).

 

Hemp typically has less of the psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol, and can be used in products including rope, textiles, clothing, shoes, food, paper, bioplastics, insulation, and biofuel.

 

The director-general of Vanuatu's Agricultural Department, Moses Amos, told local broadcaster VBTC the policies aimed to encourage foreign investment in the country.

 

"The government is especially focused on alternative resources that we can use, and one of them is industrial hemp and medicinal cannabis," he said.

 

"It's a potential resource that we can use and develop to become a potential export commodity for us, and at the same time bring a little money into the country."

High risk industry

 

In an attempt to mitigate the "high risks" associated with the cannabis industry, the government has said it will only approve licenses for companies with at least 10 years' experience in the field.

The Salt Doll

 

The doll of salt had been walking in the desert for longer than it could remember.

It didnโ€™t know from where it had come, nor how long it had been travelling.

It was simply alive, and walking, beneath the hot sun, in the sand-filled winds, in the icy moonlight of the night.

Day after day.

 

At a certain point it came to the sea, though it could make no sense of it.

This new land, shifting and noisy and made of a substance entirely unknown to it, filled its small body with an unfamiliar fear.

 

โ€œBut what are you?โ€ it asked, staring out at the endless body of water.

โ€œTouch me,โ€ the ocean replied.

 

Tentatively, the salt doll reached out and put a toe into the water.

A thrill shot up the length of its body and it gained a glimmer of understanding.

Yet when it looked down, it noticed that its toe was gone.

The salt doll withdrew slightly. It was unsure about this new land and its strange ways. It didnโ€™t want to lose itself.

The sea said nothing. It lapped at the shore, existing, as simply as the sun and the wind.

 

Eventually the salt doll was unable to keep itself from moving closer again.

It could still taste the sea in its body, and its curiosity was too strong. It needed to know more.

Placing a foot in the water, the sea shot up its leg and passed into the rest of it, collapsing the doll into itself.

Plane Crashes Outside 3M Factory In Little Rock; No Survivors

 

ARKANSAS โ€“ Police have confirmed reports of a small plane crash near the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock on Wednesday afternoon.

 

According to officials, all five people who were aboard the twin-engine plane were killed.

 

At noon, Emergency Communications received an alert that the plane had crashed near the 3M Plant on Walters Road.

 

The cause of the crash is unknown.

The twin-engine plane crashed outside a 3M plant in Little Rock, a couple of miles south of Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport, Pulaski County Sheriffโ€™s Office spokesman Lt. Cody Burk said. The Federal Aviation Administration said five people were on board the plane.

 

The Beech BE20 had departed the Little Rock airport and was headed to John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, Ohio, the FAA said.

 

Burk did not immediately release the names or ages of the people on the plane. The FAA said it and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

NPR says it's cutting jobs by 10% as ad revenue drops

 

NPR's chief executive announced the network would lay off roughly 10% of its current workforce โ€“ at least 100 people โ€“ and eliminate most vacant positions. CEO John Lansing cited the erosion of advertising dollars, particularly for NPR podcasts, and the tough financial outlook for the media industry more generally.

 

"When we say we are eliminating filled positions, we are talking about our colleagues - people whose skills, spirit and talents help make NPR what it is today," Lansing wrote in a memo to staff today. "This will be a major loss."

 

On an annual budget of roughly $300 million, Lansing says, revenues are likely to fall short by close to $30 million, although that gap could reach $32 million.

 

"We're not seeing signs of a recovery in the advertising market," Lansing says in an interview. "Nothing is nailed down yet except the principles and what we know we have to reach."

 

NPR's programming division, which produces its industry-leading podcasts, has more than doubled since 2019. Lansing says he remains committed to podcasting "1,000 percent," as well as the network's hallmark news magazines, such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

 

Lansing says he does not yet know who within NPR will be affected, but said the job cuts would not fall evenly across the organization.

 

"I don't anticipate that it would be like a haircut across every division, because that's just not management," Lansing says. "Management is about committing to strategy, making tough decisions."

 

He also vowed to make sure job cuts do not fall disproportionately on employees of color.

 

An NPR spokeswoman said final decisions on which jobs will be eliminated should occur by the week of March 20.

 

When asked about his priorities, Lansing invoked what he has called the network's "North Star'' since his arrival in the fall of 2019: a push to ensure the network has a bigger and broader audience base, rooted in younger and more diverse listeners, readers and consumers. The emphasis, he says, must be on drawing in "the future audience to make NPR sustainable for the next 50 years."

The Future of the Colonies

 

The windows were closed to ensure no information regarding the debate about the future of the colonies would be carried to the people. The men gathered in the stuffy Philadelphia room are now often viewed as demigods for their courage and tenacity as patriots, but in May 1775, they were simply colonists toying with the idea of treason.

 

Standing alongside John Adams, Richard Henry Lee, Roger Sherman, Dr. John Knox Witherspoon, and Dr. Lyman Hall were others who today occupy the annals of United States history.

 

John Adams described the quietly efficient Caesar Rodney as โ€œthe oddest-looking man in the world; he is tall, thin and slender as a reed, pale; his face is not bigger than a large apple, yet there is a sense of fire, spirit, wit and humor in this countenance.โ€ Adams, in writing about his friend, kindly did not mention the large, probably cancerous facial growth that plagued Rodney most of his later years, often partially obscured by a large handkerchief to reduce the stares. Most have never heard of Rodney, but it was his vote that added Delaware to the โ€œYeaโ€ column.

 

As the debate raged in 1776 regarding independence, Delawareโ€™s two other delegates, George Read and Thomas McKean, were split on how to cast the colonyโ€™s vote. Rodney was home organizing the state militia when he learned there was a tie vote. He left immediately and raced on horseback, through a horrible thunderstorm, to Philadelphia, 80 miles away. Letters record that Rodney dashed into the convention and broke the deadlock that threatened the passage of the Declaration of Independence.

 

Benjamin Franklin, the oldest delegate and perhaps the best known, quickly became the peacemaker of the convention, his wit defusing tense moments. He had returned from Great Britain in May and, on the following day, had been elected a delegate. Interestingly, delegates did not know where Franklin stood on the issue of independence; he attended the sessions, quietly observed, and seldom joined the others for dinner. John Adams was overheard muttering that Franklin was treated with reverence even when he was โ€œsitting in silenceโ€; Adams was seldom silent.

 

On the same day (July 5, 1775) that the Olive Branch Petition, offering a path for reconciliation, was signed by the delegates, the delegates learned exactly how Franklin felt. A letter he had written to his English friend William Strahan, a fellow printer, was โ€œleakedโ€ to the public. His words predicted the future, as he wrote: โ€œYou are a Member of Parliament, and one of that Majority which has doomed my country to destruction. You have begun to burn our towns, and murder our people. Look upon your hands! They are stained with the blood of your relations! You and I were long friends: You are now my enemy, and I am Yours. B. Franklin.โ€ Franklin never mailed the letter, perhaps written for political purposes only, but he emerged as one of the strongest advocates for revolution.

The government in Moldova has in recent years taken several steps to fight corruption, including law enforcement and institutional setups. The prosecution of officials who are involved in corruption has also increased in recent years. However, businesses consider corruption a serious problem for doing business, and the business environment continues to be one of the most challenging in the region.[1]

 

According to Transparency International, 37% of Moldovans report paying a bribe in 2010. One of the most perceived corrupt institutions is the police.

On 19 April 2021, the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2021โ€“2024 was signed in Strasbourg, France. It is an action plan which, among other things, aims to combat corruption in the country.[3]

 

On Transparency International's 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index, Moldova scored 36 on a scale from 0 ("highly corrupt") to 100 ("highly clean"). When ranked by score, Moldova ranked 105th among the 180 countries in the Index, where the country ranked first is perceived to have the most honest public sector. [4] For comparison, the best score was 88 (ranked 1), and the worst score was 11 (ranked 180).[5]

Hancockโ€™s verbal skills along with a quick mind made him a natural choice for the first president of the Second Continental Congress.

 

And then there was New Yorkโ€™s John Jay. A successful attorney who had graduated from Kingโ€™s College, Jay was not an immediate convert to the cause for independence, but by 1774 and the First Continental Congress, he embraced independence and authored โ€œThe Address to the People of Great Britain,โ€ an eloquently written explanation of the coloniesโ€™ grievances. He helped push the New York delegates to vote for independence, aided by his colleague Robert Livingstonโ€™s position on the โ€œDeclaration of Independenceโ€ committee. Jay would later serve a term as president of the Second Continental Congress, write New Yorkโ€™s first constitution, and be appointed as the first chief justice of the U. S. Supreme Court, but that future was uncertain in 1775.

 

While we associate the Second Continental Congress with the writing of the Declaration of Independence, certainly its most significant action, the delegates accomplished more as they became the government of the newly created alliance of colonies. One of their first actions was to respond to the Battles of Lexington and Concord by appointing Virginiaโ€™s George Washington as commander of the Continental forces. The delegates worked together, often in committees, to โ€œrunโ€ the government โ€” appointing ambassadors, recruiting soldiers, organizing military units by appointing generals, issuing paper currency, and dealing with issues as they arose. New Forensic Expertโ€™s Report Out of Allegheny County, PA Shows Duplicate Ballot Scans and over 50,000 โ€œNon-Unique Tabulator CVR Numbersโ€

 

Back in September of 2022, forensics expert Erich Speckin discovered over 10,000 ballots in Pennsylvaniaโ€™s Allegheny County that had substantially inferior image quality compared to other ballots provided:

 

โ€œMany of these images have similar defects in the printing/copying process which would indicate common source of production, but different than the remaining examined ballots. Clearly in the mail in counting area, a random printing defect that may have existed in mailing out of ballots could not consistently come back and be counted on the same scanner. Therefore, a printing defect on the printing side of the ballot creation is not the likely cause of this anomaly.โ€

 

The Gateway Pundit reported on these findings and noted that the 10,000 ballots was almost the margin of victory for Marine Corps veteran Conor Lamb in his race against Army veteran Sean Parnell.

 

Parnell claimed that, on election night in 2020, his staff determined it was mathematically impossible for Lamb to win and Lamb had allegedly called Parnell on election night to congratulate him on his victory. But as the numbers began to trickle in for the days and weeks after the election, that changed.

 

Speckin is a forensics expert in document examination with 29 years experience. Back in 2016, โ€œ517 Business and Lifeโ€ wrote an article about Speckinโ€™s history in forensic document review, including work with police departments, attorneys, and consultation with the TV Show โ€œCSIโ€.

 

He has reviewed election cases, including ballots, โ€œin many instances in [his] careerโ€ฆโ€ Yesterday, Speckin released another report after further investigation into the data found on the tabulatorโ€™s CVR forms obtained through Right To Know requests from Allegheny County.

In this case, I had access to PDF scans of the front and back of each ballot as well as the corresponding

PDF of the detail for the counting and tabulation of each ballot. Every ballot has a unique individual

identifying number associated with the counting and is part of the PDF file name.

As a result of only having images, the forensic examination that can be performed is limited. It is always

more desirable to have the original evidence when possible.

 

Finding 1:

 

In his investigation, Speckin found that there were over 170 instances where a ballot appeared to be a duplicate scan. This conclusion was derived from comparing all of the marks on ballot images provided by the county and comparing them with ballot images that have the โ€œsame markings.โ€ The review of duplicate scanned ballots is ongoing and could potentially increase. AuditTheVotePA is reporting their analysis thus far is at 252 examples.

Joe Biden Releases Executive Order Promoting Woke AI

 

Critics have claimed that the new executive order signed by President Joe Biden will lead to the further creation of woke AI that will promote โ€œracial division and discriminationโ€ in the name of an โ€œequity action plan.โ€

 

The Electronic Privacy Information Center reports that President Joe Biden has approved an executive order directing federal organizations to create an annual โ€œequity action planโ€ to support underserved communities. The order instructs organizations to use AI in a way that promotes equity and complies with the law. The decision has caused debate, with opponents expressing concern about the development of woke AI that encourages racial animosity and discrimination.

 

The executive order, which is titled โ€œAdvancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government,โ€ seeks to combat inequality in a number of fields, including healthcare, education, housing, and criminal justice. The order outlines various steps that agencies should take to ensure that all Americans receive equitable treatment and opportunities and declares that โ€œadvancing equity is a moral imperative.โ€

Colin Wright, a fellow at the Manhattan Institute, asserted additionally that such technology might prove fatal to society. He wrote that โ€œBiden is not a moderate. This is a legal sprint to introduce as much radical ideology as possible, broadly and deeply, into our government. This cannot be allowed. NASA's Chandra Discovers Giant Black Holes on Collision Course

A new study using NASAโ€™s Chandra X-ray Observatory has tracked two pairs of supermassive black holes in dwarf galaxies on collision courses, as discussed in our latest press release. This is the first evidence for such an impending encounter, providing scientists with important information about the growth of black holes in the early Universe.

 

By definition, dwarf galaxies contain stars with a total mass less than 3 billion Suns โ€” or about 20 times less than the Milky Way. Astronomers have long suspected that dwarf galaxies merge, particularly in the relatively early Universe, in order to grow into the larger galaxies seen today. However, current technology cannot observe the first generation of dwarf galaxy mergers because they are extraordinarily faint at their great distances. Another tactic โ€” looking for dwarf galaxy mergers closer by โ€” had not been successful to date.

 

The new study overcame these challenges by implementing a systematic survey of deep Chandra X-ray observations and comparing them with infrared data from NASAโ€™s Wide Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and optical data from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT).

 

Chandra was particularly valuable for this study because material surrounding black holes can be heated up to millions of degrees, producing large amounts of X-rays. The team searched for pairs of bright X-ray sources in colliding dwarf galaxies as evidence of two black holes, and discovered two examples.

 

One pair is in the galaxy cluster Abell 133 located 760 million light-years from Earth, seen in the composite image on the left. Chandra X-ray data is in pink and optical data from CFHT is in blue. This pair of dwarf galaxies appears to be in the late stages of a merger, and shows a long tail caused by tidal effects from the collision. The authors of the new study have nicknamed it โ€œMirabilisโ€ after an endangered species of hummingbird known for their exceptionally long tails. Only one name was chosen because the merger of two galaxies into one is almost complete. The two Chandra sources show X-rays from material around the black holes in each galaxy.

 

The other pair was discovered in Abell 1758S, a galaxy cluster about 3.2 billion light-years away. The composite image from Chandra and CFHT is on the right, using the same colors as for Mirabilis. The researchers nicknamed the merging dwarf galaxies โ€œElstirโ€ and โ€œVinteuil,โ€ after fictional artists from Marcel Proust's "In Search of Lost Time". Vinteuil is the galaxy on the top and Elstir is the galaxy on the bottom. Both have Chandra sources associated with them, again from X-rays from material around the black holes in each galaxy. The researchers think these two have been caught in the early stages of a merger, causing a bridge of stars and gas to connect the two colliding galaxies from their gravitational interaction.

 

The details of merging black holes and dwarf galaxies may provide insight to our Milky Wayโ€™s own past. Scientists think nearly all galaxies began as dwarf or other types of small galaxies and grew over billions of years through mergers. Follow-up observations of these two systems will allow astronomers to study processes that are crucial for understanding galaxies and their black holes in the earliest stages of the Universe.

A large Irish teachersโ€™ union is facing backlash after one of its teacher-training videos containing unscientific gender identity ideology that encourages teachers to socially transition gender-confused children emerged on social media.

 

The Irish National Teachersโ€™ Organisation (INTO), the main union representing teachers in Catholic schools across the nation, has defended the video after it was shared on social media by high profile figures such as Dr. Jordan Peterson and evolutionary biologist Colin Wright, according to NewsLetter.

 

The video, which appears to be aimed at very small children, tells the story of a young girl called Lucy who wishes to be a boy called Liam. Lucyโ€™s teacher begins preparing the class for Lucyโ€™s social transition by reading the book Introducing Teddy, a picture book that teaches young children it is possible to change sex.

 

โ€œSo boys can change into girls,โ€ says one student after the book is finished. โ€œAnd girls can change into boys,โ€ says another.

 

โ€œYes, I said, sometimes while the doctor says a baby is a boy, as that baby grows up, they feel inside that they're not a boy,โ€ the teacher in the training video explains.

 

โ€œWhile they might have a boy's nameโ€ฆthey know they aren't a boy and want to change their name. The same can happen for a girl. By making those changes, the person feels happier and more like themselves. Some people who experienced this might use the word transgender to describe themselves.โ€

Israel Informs Biden Admin It's Prepared to Attack Iran Nuclear Program After 'Extremely Grave Development': Report

 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a series of secret meetings with top military officials over preparations for a possible attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, according to Israeli broadcaster Channel 12.

 

Netanyahu held at least five meetings with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, the heads of two of Israelโ€™s intelligence services and other top officials to discuss striking Iranโ€™s nuclear program, Channel 12 reported Wednesday, according to The Times of Israel.

 

Officials concluded Israel could take unilateral action if necessary and conveyed the decision to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and French President Emmanuel Macron, the outlet said.

 

The Channel 12 report contained few additional details, according to The Times.

 

However, it underscored Israelโ€™s deepening concern about Iranโ€™s nuclear program as years of diplomatic attempts to stem its growth have petered out.

 

โ€œThe only thing that has ever stopped rogue nations from developing nuclear weapons is a credible military threat or a credible military action,โ€ Netanyahu told a national security conference on Tuesday. โ€œA necessary condition and often a sufficient condition is credible military action.โ€

 

The prime minister pressured international allies, including the U.S., to fulfill pledges to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and warned against delayed action.

 

โ€œThe longer you wait, the harder that becomes. Weโ€™ve waited very long,โ€ he added.

 

Gallant promised Tuesday the ministry would not allow Iran to cross a โ€œred lineโ€ and enrich uranium to 90%, a threshold that would prove Iran has the capability to produce nuclear weapons, according to The Times.

 

All options were on the table, he added.

 

Later on Wednesday, a rocket strike in Syria, attributed to Israel, targeted an installation where Iranian experts were working on drone and missile plans with allies in the region, Reuters reported, citing a source close to the Syrian government.

It's possible that a diplomatic solution could have been achieved by demilitarizing the Donbas and having Ukraine sign a treaty to not join NATO.

 

However, the U.S. political establishment desired a proxy war with Russia, leading to the current conflict.

 

Since the Obama administration's 2013-2014 coup that toppled a Russia-friendly government in Kyiv and Russia's response in invading and eventually annexing Crimea, the U.S. foreign policy establishment has been escalating this war on Russia's doorstep.

 

Given the catastrophic costs of nuclear war and how close the United States and the Soviet Union already came to global destruction, even a tiny chance of it occurring should make everyone think long and hard about where this conflict might be headed.

 

Considering the track record of NATO and the U.S. foreign policy establishment that turned stable countries across the Middle East into hotbeds of chaos and corruption, it is doubtful that they possess the mental aptitude or the moral authority to be risking war between nuclear superpowers in Ukraine.

In his first statement addressing the growing scandal over his 2018 campaignโ€™s use of a secret โ€œenemies listโ€ to censor critics on Facebook and Twitter, Sen. Angus King has doubled down.

 

King did not apologize or plead ignorance of the enemies list or its use to censor critics, but he instead appeared to approve of and endorse actions that resulted in many Mainers being banned permanently from the social media platform.

 

โ€œIf somebodyโ€™s gonna come after me with a misleading- uh, with misinformation, Iโ€™m gonna respond,โ€ King told Newscenter Maine Wednesday morning.

In this instance, Kingโ€™s response to what he calls โ€œmisleading informationโ€ was to contact high-level employees at Facebook and Twitter to provide them with a black list of more than 350 social media users.

 

After Kingโ€™s team sent the list to Facebook and Twitter, many of those accounts were permanently banned from the platforms, including accounts belonging to the Maine Republican Party and former candidates for state office.

 

Itโ€™s unclear at this point with King, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, used the power of his office in order to facilitate the censorship of his critics through Twitter and Facebook. The campaign worker who reportedly provided the blacklist to Twitter was Toby J. McGrath, who now works as a lobbyist for Drummond Woodsum.

 

The โ€œmisleading informationโ€ King refers to is a video of comments he made during the 2018 campaign comparing alleged Russian cyber crimes to the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

King also made those comments in an interview with CNN, but after State Sen. Eric Brakey (R-Androscoggin) began promoting the video, Kingโ€™s campaign decided to start calling the video of King speaking misinformation. The tactic was successful and resulted in many Maine media outlets downplaying coverage of Kingโ€™s remarks.

The senatorโ€™s office is using similar tactics to downplay the significance of Kingโ€™s participation in brazen tech censorship of political critics.

 

Although Kingโ€™s spokesperson initially denied that the purpose of the list was to censor critics, King did not repeat that denial this morning. He seemed instead to say that leveraging corporate and political connections in this manner is just another aspect of hard-nosed politics.

 

King hasnโ€™t said whether heโ€™s running for re-election in 2024. If he is, his comments today suggest he would eagerly embrace tech censorship as a political tool again, though he might find a less willing co-conspirator in Twitter under Elon Muskโ€™s ownership.

 

Brakey has said heโ€™s considering filing a complaint against King with the Federal Election Commission.

Iraq To Drop Dollar For Yuan In Trade With China

 

The Iraqi central bank announced on 22 February that, for the first time, it plans to allow trade from China to be settled directly in yuan instead of the US dollar to improve access to foreign currency.

 

โ€œIt is the first time imports would be financed from China in yuan, as Iraqi imports from China have been financed in (US) dollars only,โ€ the governmentโ€™s economic adviser, Mudhir Salih, told Reuters on 22 February.

 

According to a statement released by the Iraqi central bank, carrying out transactions in the Chinese currency would boost the balances of Iraqi banks with accounts with Chinese banks.

 

However, this option depends on the size of the central bankโ€™s yuan reserves.

 

A second option to boost local banksโ€™ yuan balances would involve converting US dollars held in the central bankโ€™s accounts with JP Morgan and the Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) to yuan before paying the final beneficiary in China.

 

The Iraqi central bank has been on a mad dash to compensate for a dollar shortage in local markets. This crisis prompted the cabinet to approve a currency revaluation earlier this month.

 

Last year, the US Treasury and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York began enforcing stricter controls on international transactions by Iraqi commercial banks, forcing them to comply with specific SWIFT global transfer system criteria to access their foreign reserves.

 

The move was allegedly meant to โ€œcurtail money laundering and the illegal siphoning of dollars to Iran and other heavily sanctioned [West Asian] countries.โ€ However, the sudden rules change for Iraqi banks sent the economy reeling as 80 percent, or more of Iraqโ€™s daily US dollar wire transfers could no longer be completed.

 

Last week, a senior Iraqi delegation visited the US capital to discuss easing the US Treasury measures. Following the trip, Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein denied reports that Washington imposed conditions on Baghdad to help with the dollar crisis.

 

Hussein added that it is โ€œonly a matter of timeโ€ before the exchange rate stabilizes.

 

Since the war in Ukraine started, several nations in the Global South have begun to move away from the US dollar in bilateral trade with China. Many others have chosen to boost their Chinese yuan reserves at a time when the hegemony of the greenback continues to weaken.

Republicans demand Ukraine aid oversight

The GOP has asked the Biden administration to prove that tens of billions of dollars worth of assistance isnโ€™t being siphoned off

 

The House Oversight Committee demanded on Wednesday that the Pentagon, State Department and US Agency for International Development prove that the $113 billion in military and economic aid allocated to Ukraine isnโ€™t being lost to โ€œwaste, fraud, and abuse.โ€

 

In a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and USAID Administrator Samantha Power, Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer urged the three officials to turn over all documents and communications regarding any economic and military assistance programs for the Ukrainian government.

 

Comerโ€™s committee is also demanding documentary evidence of the Biden administrationโ€™s plans to tie aid shipments to anti-corruption initiatives, and documents detailing how the administration evaluates the success of its aid drive.

 

The letter gives Bidenโ€™s officials until March 8 to provide all the evidence, dating back to the launch of Russiaโ€™s military operation in Ukraine last February.

 

โ€œProviding security and humanitarian assistance for warfighting and reconstruction purposes comes with an inherent risk of fraud, waste, and abuse,โ€ Comer wrote. โ€œThe United States must identify these risks and develop oversight mechanisms to mitigate them.โ€

 

While National Security Council spokesman John Kirby claimed in January that the administration has โ€œnot seen any signsโ€ that military or economic aid โ€œhas fallen prey to any kind of corruption in Ukraine,โ€ a slew of reports from the country suggest otherwise.

 

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky fired a number of top officials last month for profiteering from foreign aid, while reports from last year โ€“ backed up by Amnesty International โ€“ suggested that as little as 30% of Western weapons sent to Ukraine were actually making it to the front lines.

 

American and Canadian officials admitted at the time that they had no idea where most of these weapons were ending up, with one US intelligence source telling CNN that they disappear โ€œinto a big black holeโ€ once they enter Ukraine.

 

Republicans in Congress have broadly supported President Joe Bidenโ€™s policy of arming Ukraine, although before his party retook control of the House of Representatives last November, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy warned that the GOP would no longer write โ€œa blank checkโ€ for Kiev.

 

Comerโ€™s letter does not call for a halt to US aid, although a minority of anti-intervention Republicans have sponsored legislation that would cut Kiev off from US funding entirely.

Nord Stream investigator recalls hidden history of US-Norway covert ops

Decades before allegedly helping it bomb European gas lines, the Norwegian military aided the CIAโ€™s undeclared war in Vietnam

 

Six decades before Norway helped the CIA destroy the Nord Stream gas pipelines, it gave the agency heavily-armed boats that it used to target North Vietnam, investigative journalist Seymour Hersh wrote on Wednesday. Norwayโ€™s involvement in this secret war was deeper than previously reported, Hersh claimed.

 

Hersh, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist, claimed earlier this month that the CIA sabotaged the Nord Stream lines on President Joe Bidenโ€™s orders. The Norwegian Secret Service and Navy reportedly helped CIA divers choose the correct spot to plant the explosives, and ferried the Americans out on a boat to the location, near Denmarkโ€™s Bornholm island in the Baltic Sea.

 

Explaining why the US chose Norway as its partner in destroying the Russia-to-Germany gas lines, Hersh said on Wednesday that the โ€œNorwegian Navy has a long and murky history of cooperation with American intelligence.โ€

 

Historical reports show that Norway sold a number of fast attack boats to the US Navy, which were used by the CIA to conduct clandestine attacks along the North Vietnamese coast. By 1964, prior to the USโ€™ official entry into the Vietnam war, at least two Norwegian sailors had confessed to taking part in these raids, while unconfirmed reports claimed that Norwegian officers and crew manned some of these boats.

 

However, according to Hershโ€™s source โ€œwithin the intelligence community,โ€ the CIA was given more boats than previously reported. Manned and captained by Norwegian sailors, these vessels carried US Navy SEALs to missions against โ€œfar more aggressive targets that included heavily defended North Vietnamese radar facilities.โ€

 

While the CIAโ€™s previously reported clandestine attacks were controlled by the American command in Saigon, these more aggressive missions were commanded by the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington.

 

โ€œIt was a secret war within a secret war,โ€ Hersh wrote, adding that at least two Navy SEALs were wounded on these missions, and received the Medal of Honor in secret.

 

โ€œThis bit of top secret and heretofore unknown history raises, to this reporter, an obvious question: what else do we not know about the secret operation in Norway that led to the destruction of the pipelines?โ€ Hersh concluded.

 

The Biden administration has described Hershโ€™s reporting on the Nord Stream explosions as โ€œutterly false and complete fiction.โ€ Moscow considers the destruction of Nord Stream an act of โ€œterrorism,โ€ and Russiaโ€™s ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, argued this week that Hershโ€™s reporting was โ€œmore than a smoking gunโ€ suggesting US involvement. Prior to Hershโ€™s initial article, Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed the explosions on the West, arguing that the US in particular benefited from the attack due to its position as a supplier of LNG to Europe.
