NYPD Robot Police Dog Returns With Other Robots To New York This Summer

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City officials unveiled three new high-tech policing devices Tuesday, including a robotic dog that critics called creepy when it first joined the police pack 2 1/2 years ago.

 

The new devices, which also include a GPS tracker for stolen cars and a cone-shaped security robot, will be rolled out in a manner that is “transparent, consistent and always done in close collaboration with the people we serve,” said police Commissioner Keechant Sewell, who joined Mayor Eric Adams and other officials at a Times Square press conference where the security robot and the mechanical canine nicknamed Digidog were displayed.

 

“Digidog is out of the pound,” said Adams, a Democrat and former police officer. “Digidog is now part of the toolkit that we are using.”

 

The city’s first robot police dog was leased in 2020 by Adams’ predecessor, former Mayor Bill de Blasio, but the city’s contract for the device was cut short after critics derided it as creepy and dystopian.

 

Adams said he won’t bow to anti-robot dog pressure.

 

“A few loud people were opposed to it and we took a step back,” the mayor said. “That is not how I operate. I operate on looking at what’s best for the city.”

 

Adams said the remote-controlled, 70-pound (32-kilogram) Digidog will be deployed in risky situations like hostage standoffs starting this summer.

 

“If you have a barricaded suspect, if you have someone that’s inside a building that is armed, instead of sending police in there, you send Digidog in there,” he said. “So these are smart ways of using good technologies.”

 

The tracking system called StarChase will allow police to launch a GPS tag that will attach itself to a stolen car so that officers can track the vehicle’s location. The New York Police Department’s pilot program for using the system will last 90 days, officials said.

 

The Autonomous Security Robot, which Adams compared to a Roomba, will be deployed inside the Times Square subway station in a seven-month pilot program starting this summer, police officials said.

 

The device, used in shopping centers and other locations for several years, will at first be joined by a human partner, police said.

 

Civil libertarians and police reform advocates questioned the need for the high-tech devices.

 

“This latest announcement is just the most recent example of how Mayor Adams allows unmitigated overspending of the NYPD’s massively bloated budget,” said Ileana Mendez-Penate, program director of Communities United for Police Reform. “The NYPD is buying robot dogs and other fancy tech while New Yorkers can’t access food stamps because city agencies are short-staffed, and New Yorkers are getting evicted because they can’t access their right to counsel.”

 

Albert Fox Cahn, executive director of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, said: “The NYPD is turning bad science fiction into terrible policing. New York deserves real safety, not a knockoff RoboCop.”

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's restraining order against Jim Jordan declined by judge, will go to hearing

 

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's request for a restraining order against Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) was declined by a judge on Tuesday. The judge ordered Bragg to send the material to Jordan by 9 p.m. Wednesday so the court could have a hearing on the situation on April 19.

 

Bragg requested the order in an attempt to block Jordan from interfering in the Stormy Daniels hush money case that former President Donald Trump was charged in last week. Jordan has subpoenaed an investigator previously involved in the case.

 

The lawsuit was filed with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on Tuesday. The hearing to determine whether the restraining order against Jordan takes effect is scheduled for April 19 at 2 p.m. in Courtroom 18C of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse.

 

Bragg filed for a restraining order against the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee "in response to an unprecedentedly brazen and unconstitutional attack by members of Congress."

 

Lawyers for Bragg are seeking to block a subpoena of Mark Pomerantz, who led the investigation into Trump for the district attorney before he resigned over disagreements with Bragg. The lawsuit said that "Congress has no power to supervise state criminal prosecution" and Jordan is intervening in matters outside of his scope for oversight.

 

"Chairman Jordan’s demands, including his subpoena to Mr. Pomerantz, seek highly sensitive and confidential local prosecutorial information that belongs to the Office of the District Attorney and the People of New York," the lawsuit said. "Basic principles of federalism and common sense, as well as binding Supreme Court precedent, forbid Congress from demanding it."

 

The lawsuit also looks to prevent Jordan from issuing future subpoenas against Bragg or "any of his current or former employees or officials."

 

Jordan and other House Republicans have been conducting an investigation into Bragg's office and have sent requests and subpoenas for documents and testimony from people connected to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. The investigation was sparked by the indictment of Trump last month by a Manhattan grand jury.

 

The Ohio Republican reacted to the lawsuit in a tweet, saying Bragg was blocking congressional oversight of federal funds used to investigate Trump.

Pentagon Leak Traced To Video Game Discord Group Discussing Ukraine

According to open-source intelligence specialists, a damning trove of Pentagon leaks initially appeared to have been released on a video game chat service Discord in an effort to win a debate about the conflict in Ukraine.

 

Discord is a chat program geared for gamers and users who do not want to be censored. Ten of the papers were released on one server dubbed “Minecraft Earth Map” as early as March 4th, a month before they appeared on the other servers.

The strange origin of the leak may seem uncommon, but it is not the first time a gaming conflict has resulted in an intelligence breach, with the overlapped communities posing issues for both gamers and military systems.

Last week, documents revealing estimated casualties in the Bakhmut theatre of combat started to circulate on public social networks, revealing the existence of the leaked cache.

Among the Ukraine war observers were two copies of those documents, one of which had been hastily digitally edited to understate Russian losses and overestimate Ukrainian ones. One, with the accurate numbers, came via a leak to the anonymous image board site 4chan.  

A second set of documents, which also contained the modified images, was reportedly circulating on “pro-Russian” Telegram channels.

However, neither was the original source. The data had been disseminated in private Discord chatrooms before they were ever made public on the internet.

“After a brief spat with another person on the server about Minecraft Maps and the war in Ukraine, one of the Discord users replied: ‘Here, have some leaked documents’ – attaching 10 documents about Ukraine, some of which bore the ‘top secret’ markings,” said Aric Toler, an analyst at the research group Bellingcat.

The documents had been uploaded on another Discord server maintained by and for followers of the Filipino YouTuber “WowMao” three days prior, along with dozens of other unconfirmed documents regarding Ukraine. However, they didn’t seem to be the original source, but rather, the documents could have been posted as early as mid-January on a third Discord server with the moniker “Thug Shaker Central,” among other names.

“Posts and channel listings show that the server’s users were interested in video games, music, Orthodox religion, and fandom for the popular military-themed YouTuber ‘Oxide’,” said Toler.

Despite the scale and sensitivity of the disclosures, it is not the first time that a dispute over video games has been linked to an intelligence compromise. “War Thunder,” a vehicular combat multiplayer video game, had become infamous for having a plethora of leaks associated with it.

Since there are 70 million users typically playing the game, there are frequently arguments about balance and accuracy. As a result, users have violated the game’s rules in at least 10 different instances since 2020, mostly by posting classified documents about the power of active weaponry in an effort to argue that the digital version of the vehicle should be improved to be more accurate.

For instance, to win an online debate over the speed of the turret rotation on the French Leclerc tank, classified design information regarding the tank was uploaded by arguing discord users in October 2021.

A person posing as a tank commander in the British army then leaked documents about the vehicle’s armor structure in July 2021. Four other individuals also shared design documents for at least five different fighter jets in January of this year.

War Thunder has become a shorthand for intelligence agency oversight, forcing military contractor Raytheon to adamantly dismiss reports specifically asking about the game as part of its security clearance process.

“We always delete posts containing classified or restricted information from our forum as soon as possible. We forbid our users to share documents like this on our platforms. We remind our users again and again that it’s both illegal and pointless, so they should never do that,” said Anton Yudintsev, the founder of Hungarian developer Gaijin Entertainment.

“We never use them in our work and that policy will never change. Development team does not even look at the contents of the documents, moderators just check if the information on the military vehicle or armament in question is still classified or not. Middle School Announces It Will Fly Transgender Pride Flag Year Round

 

Hackensack Middle School announced the “Pride Inclusive Flag Raising Ceremony” on Twitter.

 

The “inclusive” pride flag does not just feature the rainbow, but also includes a triangular emblem with the colors white, blue, and pink, which symbolize transgenderism.

 

The flag raising ceremony was also celebrated by It Gets Better, a pro-trans non profit that seeks to “empower … lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth around the globe.”

 

The organization wrote an article celebrating the win for leftist gender theory in schools, which read, “The GSA at Hackensack Middle School helped write a resolution with the school district’s superintendent to keep the inclusive Pride flag raised year round, not just during Pride Month. The resolution passed with full support from the Board of Education.”

 

The article also contends, “The symbolism of the flag’s permanency is clear — our identities are valid and here to stay, no matter what the ignorant wish to say about it.”

 

Meanwhile, one tweet from the school library’s media center reads “Last week we celebrated pronoun pride by leading a button making activity with the GSA,” in reference to the Gay Straight Alliance, a club at the school. One button reads, “My pronouns are they/them,” while another reads “ask me about my pronouns.”

Dem Governor Who Shut Down Churches During COVID Ordered To Pay Over $270,000 In Attorney’s Fees

 

A federal appeals court ruled Monday that three individuals who sued the Kentucky governor for their right to assemble for worship during COVID-19 must be paid over $270,000 in attorney’s fees.

 

Randall Daniel, Theodore Roberts, and Sally O’Boyle sued in August 2020 after they received notices logging their attendance at Maryville Baptist Church’s Easter Service and informing them they must quarantine or face “further enforcement measures.” The group alleged Democratic Governor Andrew Beshear’s bans on religious gatherings and interstate travel violated their constitutional rights, which the Sixth Circuit affirmed in May 2020, according to court documents.

 

On Monday, the Sixth Circuit upheld a district court ruling awarding the congregants $272,142.50 in attorney’s fees, rejecting the governor’s challenges.

 

“I know a lot of people who are outraged that the TAXPAYER is on the hook for ANDY’S constitutional violation,” said Roberts in a tweet. “I share this outrage, but this outrage must be aimed at Beshear. If the people of Kentucky want to quit being taxed to pay for these court judgments, Kentucky MUST elect a governor who will actually follow the constitution.”

 

Republican Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie responded to the ruling on Monday, congratulating attorney Chris Wiest and TJ Roberts on the win.

Maryland School District Removes Parental Right to Opt-Out of Certain Curriculum, Makes LGBTQ-Themed Books Required Reading

 

The Montgomery County School District in Maryland has removed parents’ rights to opt their children out of certain parts of the curriculum and has made LGBTQ-themed books required reading.

 

The district has made multiple controversial books mandatory reading for its English language arts curriculum as part of an “LGBTQ-inclusive reading list.”

 

“MCPS keeps painting these books as rainbow unicorn which they are not,” Moms for Liberty Montgomery chapter president Lindsey Smith told Fox News.

 

Smith said her three-year-old was assigned a book called “Pride Puppy” and an ABC book with images of drag queens under “Q for Queen.”

 

The report explains, “while several parents requested a policy to opt out of these books, a recently updated policy by the school board insisted that students will be required to ‘engage’ with these materials. In addition, parents will no longer be required to be informed on which books will be included on the lists.”

 

“Students and families may not choose to opt out of engaging with any instructional materials, other than ‘Family Life and Human Sexuality Unit of Instruction’ which is specifically permitted by Maryland law. As such, teachers will not send home letters to inform families when inclusive books are read in the future,” MCPS’ policy reads.

 

It’s not just conservatives who oppose the required materials.

 

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Montgomery County Muslim Council also oppose the district’s decision.

 

“We’re trying to be respectful of these groups and their rights, but at the same time, we’re saying our rights need to be represented based off of our belief systems,” Montgomery County Muslim Council President Asif Husain told Fox News.

 

CAIR has launched a petition demanding parental notification of certain books and restoring the option to opt-out.

Blackstone Raises $30 Billion For "Largest Ever" Real Estate Drawdown Fund To Capitalize On Commercial Real Estate Crisis

 

Blackstone may have blocked investor redemptions from its REIT fund for the fourth month in a row, but that does not mean the CRE giant and world's largest commercial landlord is sitting on its hands as the CRE crisis goes from bad to worse.

 

On Tuesday, Blackstone announced it had raised $30.4 billion for its latest global real estate fund - the largest private equity drawdown fund ever raised - targeting opportunistic deals across sectors such as rental housing, hospitality and data centers as the private equity behemoth looks to double down on the industry. The fund, called Blackstone Real Estate Partners X, is 48% bigger than the asset management giant's previous real estate fund which closed in 2019, and is the largest of that type, according to PitchBook data going back to 2002.

 

Ken Caplan, Global Co-Head of Blackstone Real Estate, said, "We believe the current market is tailor-made for Blackstone Real Estate. We have made some of our best investments in periods characterized by the market volatility and dislocation we see today. Furthermore, sector selection has never been more critical as we witness the bifurcation of performance within real estate, which is favoring our high-conviction themes." There was no mention of the ongoing redemption halt at the company's massive BREIT fund.

 

“Pullback with all forms of capital will create opportunities,” said Kathleen McCarthy, global co-head of Blackstone Real Estate. “We can use our capital and expertise to capitalize on the moment for our investors.”

 

In other words, even as existing Blackstone investments are deeply underwater, the PE giant which now has $326 billion of investor capital under management - will seek to purchase distressed CRE assets during the coming downcycle, becoming even more entrenched and an even greater monopoly in the sector.

 

Blackstone - the largest owner of commercial real estate globally - has been focusing its portfolio on logistics, rental housing, hospitality, lab office and data centers, shifting away from assets like traditional office and malls that are facing headwinds from a post-pandemic adoption of flexible work and surge in e-commerce, Reuters reported.

 

As we have been reporting extensively, the commercial real estate market - especially the office and mall segments - have come under huge stress over the past year due to a pullback across commercial-property lending, as borrowing costs skyrocketed. At the same time, the stocks of public real estate investment trusts have also suffered amid the uncertainty in the market and increasing concerns about certain property types such as offices.

 

The firm started to raise money for the large property drawdown fund last year. Three of its strategies - global, Asia and Europe - now have a total of $50 billion in capital commitments, the firm said.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against Rep. Jim Jordan R-Ohio, claiming that Jordan is interfering in his investigation and waging intimidating tactics over Bragg’s indictment of President Donald J Trump, the lawsuit states.

 

President Trump was indicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records that were related to hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels. Bragg claims that President Trump was hiding other crimes within the falsification of his business records but has yet to provide any evidence to the public on what crimes were committed.

 

Jordan, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee is investigating claims that the bureaucracy has been weaponized against Trump and the GOP. During the House Weaponization Subcommittee hearing Jordan, R-Ohio, has had numerous witnesses testify about the Biden administration’s alleged collusion with Big Tech companies that have violated First Amendment rights. Jordan, who has spoken to numerous FBI whistleblowers, allege that the bureau urged social media companies, to include Twitter and Facebook, not to distribute stories referencing Biden’s son, Hunter Biden’s laptop that contained a plethora of information on the Biden family’s business dealings, as well as exposed Hunter’s penchant for drugs and prostitutes. The New York Post was first banned on Twitter for Miranda Devine’s excellent investigative journalism exposed in her best selling book ‘Laptop From Hell.’

 

As for Bragg’s charges, Trump pleaded ‘not guilty’ to all counts. Bragg has been criticized by both Democrats and Republicans for bringing these very weak charges against the former President.

 

Even staunch Trump critic former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo blasted Bragg telling John Catsimatidis on WABC 770s radio, “you have a cynical public, they don’t believe anyone and when you start to see these prosecutors bring political cases, it just affirms everybody’s cynicism…It’s a coincidence that Bragg goes after Trump and Tish James goes after Trump and Georgia goes after Trump. That’s all a coincidence,” Cuomo scoffed.

 

Cuomo was referring to James’ investigation of the Trump Organization, as well as the “District Attorney of Fulton County’s probe into Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election,” as reported by the New York Post.

 

Bragg’s lawsuit states, “in response to an unprecedentedly brazen and unconstitutional attack by members of Congress on an ongoing New York State criminal prosecution and investigation of former President Donald J. Trump.”

 

A statement from DA Bragg in the lawsuit states, “Chairman Jordan’s subpoena is an unconstitutional attempt to undermine an ongoing New York felony criminal prosecution and investigation,” Bragg continued, “As our complaint details, this is an unprecedented, illegitimate interference by Congress that lacks any legal merit and defies basic principles of federalism.”

 

Jordan responded to Bragg’s lawsuit on twitter.

 

“First, they indict a president for no crime,” he said. “Then, they sue to block congressional oversight when we ask questions about the federal funds they say they used to do it.”

In the French and Indian War, 1,400 British troops marched over the Appalachian Mountains to seize French Fort Duquesne, near present-day Pittsburgh. Col. The more I think about tonight’s interview, the more it feels like the “Biden Administration” is really about facilitating a Great Awakening for the rest of the world.

The leaked Pentagon documents appear to be a physical theft rather than a cyber leak, CBS reported Tuesday evening.

 

“One U.S. official indicated that not all printers are authorized to print classified documents, and those that have this authorization register a unique ID when printing, so this may provide some clues into the search for the leaker.” CBS News reported.

 

Classified documents detailing the Ukraine war, Middle East, China, Africa and Israel ended up on a gaming platform.

 

According to the latest leak, US and UK special forces are on the ground in Ukraine.

 

NSC spox John Kirby this week said of the Pentagon docs leak, “we don’t know who’s behind this, we don’t know what the motive is.”

 

“Two officials tell CBS News that it does not appear to be a cyber leak, but rather a physical theft of highly classified material,” CBS’s Catherine Herridge reported on Tuesday.

The FBI is working to track down who leaked sensitive and secret defense and intelligence documents and shared them on social media, and at the same time, the Pentagon is reducing the number of people who have access to the kind of classified information that has been leaked.

 

The number of people on government-wide distribution lists who receive classified updates has been culled significantly since Friday, U.S. officials said. Before the leak was revealed, about 1,000 people usually had access to these types of documents. CBS News has reviewed a number of the leaked documents, all of which are color printouts with text, graphics or maps that appear to have been folded, unfolded and then photographed and shared on social media sites including 4Chan and Discord.

 

The Pentagon’s internal review of the matter will be led by Milancy Harris, deputy under secretary of defense for intelligence and security. The review will probe the scope and scale of the leak and the impact on the U.S. and allies’ national security, and examine how information flows and who has access to it.

 

The FBI is leading the criminal investigation, which is only in its early stages, according to a U.S. official familiar with the probe. Former officials familiar with leak investigations predicted that identifying the source could happen quickly because “the universe of possibilities is relatively small.”
