Child from Big Rivers region in Northern Territory dies after contracting mosquito-borne disease Murray Valley encephalitis

 

Health authorities are again urging residents to remain vigilant of their surroundings, following the second death of a child this year related to the disease amid rising case numbers.

 

A child has become the second person to die this year after contracting mosquito-borne disease Murray Valley encephalitis.

 

The Northern Territory Health Department confirmed the death on Thursday, revealing the infant from the Big Rivers Region died in early May.

 

This is the second child to lose their life to the rare disease in just over two months, following the death of a Western Australia youngster in April.

 

It is the third death in the country, after a woman from Victoria died when she contracted MVE in either the Buloke Shire or Swan Hill.

 

The child's death means there have been four case of the disease reported in the NT, two from Big Rivers in young infants, one in the Barkly region and the other in the Top End.

 

In the past two decades there have been six deaths confirmed to authorities from MVE, as cases doubled compared to the previous five years.

 

A veterinary lab has conducted mosquito testing in the territory and confirmed the virus was present in mosquitoes in the Top End, Central Australia and Barkly regions.

 

MVE is uncommon but it can be fatal when bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus.

 

It is especially dangerous in children and the elderly.

 

Some of the symptoms include headaches, high fever, tremors, seizures, and in worst cases can lead to a coma or permanent brain damage or death.

Health authorities have issued a public health alert warning residents to be extra vigilant following heavy rain and floods or waterways where mosquitoes can breed.

 

The insects are most active during the night and early in the morning, with the high risk months between February and end of June.

 

Those in regional communities, visiting parks and recreational areas have also been told to remain cautious.

 

MVE is not the only virus circulating, the Japanese encephalitis is another potential fatal disease if a person is bitten.

Supreme Court Ruling Could Legalize Assault Rifles In Every State

World Health Organization declares end to mpox public health emergency

 

Mpox is no longer a global health emergency, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), ending a near year-long alert for the viral disease that led to confirmed cases in more than one hundred countries.

More than 87,000 mpox cases have been confirmed since the start of 2022

 

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared mpox, also known as monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern in July 2022 and backed its stand in November and February.

 

Tedros said the novel way mpox was infecting people, via sexual contact in many countries that had never before identified cases, raised numerous concerns that warranted more attention. It was the biggest-ever outbreak of mpox.

 

Dr Tedros declared the end of the emergency status for the disease based on the recommendation of the organization's emergency committee, which met on Wednesday.

 

"We now see steady progress in controlling the outbreak based on the lessons of HIV and working closely with the most affected communities," Tedros said.

 

"I’m pleased to declare that the mpox is no longer a global health emergency."

 

The move signals that the crisis due to mpox, which spreads through direct contact with body fluids and causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled skin lesions, has come under control.

 

Almost 90 per cent fewer mpox cases were reported in the past three months, compared with cases in the same duration before that, the WHO chief said.

 

Mpox has been established in parts of central and west Africa for decades, where people are mainly infected by animals like wild rodents. But the disease wasn't known to spark big outbreaks beyond the continent or to spread easily among people until last May, when dozens of epidemics emerged in Europe, North America and elsewhere.

 

Mpox most often causes symptoms including a rash, fever, headache, muscle pain and swollen lymph nodes. The skin lesions can last up to a month and the disease is spread via close physical contact with an infected patient or their clothing or bedsheets. Most people don't need medical treatment to recover.

 

More than 87,000 mpox cases have been confirmed globally from the beginning of 2022 through May 8 this year, according to the WHO's latest report.

 

The WHO recently also declared an end of public health emergency status for COVID-19.

 

"While the emergencies of mpox and COVID-19 are both over, the threat of resurgent waves remains for both. Both viruses continue to circulate and both continue to kill," Tedros said.

 

The WHO tag is meant to trigger a coordinated international response and unlock funding for collaboration on sharing of vaccines and treatments.

An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer is dead and two others are injured following what officials are describing as an “ambush” attack at a home in eastern Ontario on Thursday morning.

Police say the three officers were responding to a call for the sounds of gunshots at a residence in Bourget, Ont. shortly after 2 a.m. when they were shot at by an assailant.

All three officers were transported to a hospital in Ottawa following the shooting.

One of the officers, identified as 42-year-old Sgt. Eric Mueller, has since died.

FLORIDA – On Wednesday, Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer of Florida, who gained national recognition during the Parkland school massacre trial, announced her resignation from her post.

 

Her resignation will take effect on June 30 as she seeks other new “career opportunities,” which she did not specify.

 

“It has been a a privilege to serve the people of the State of Florida for over 10 years,” Scherer wrote in a letter to Governor Ron DeSantis.

 

Judge Scherer became a well-known figure after overseeing the televised penalty trial of Nikolas Cruz, who received a life sentence last year after a divided jury was unable to agree on the death penalty for the 2018 mass killing of 14 students and three staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

 

Scherer was appointed to the bench in 2012 and was assigned to Cruz’s case shortly after the shooting.

Anti vaxxers kicked out of chemist after trying to deliver cease and desist letter

 

Chemists have been targeted by anti vaxxers on a late-night mission to deliver cease and desist letters.

 

Unsuspecting workers at chemists have been paid a visit by a shameless group of “cooked pals” issuing a three-page cease and desist letter for administering Covid-19 vaccines.

 

At least three late-night pharmacies in Canberra were targeted on Wednesday evening, including in Charnwood, O’Connor and Civic, with security at one having to escort them out.

 

A copy of the lengthy document, with a giant headline that read, “WARNING”, has since been shared online where it has been ruthlessly mocked.

 

“To all medical practitioners, doctors, nurses and any person administering the Covid-19 vaccine. This is a formal warning of your legal duty to clearly inform any person before receiving any Covid-19 vaccinations of the following,” the document read.

 

It went on to list a series of popular phrases used among anti vaxxers, like it being “experimental” and that “scientists do not know the long-term side effects”.

 

According to Capital Chemist group business manager Andrew Topp, the three individuals arrived at Capital Chemist O’Connor at about 10pm and lingered for about an hour.

 

He told news.com.au the store’s security guard eventually stepped in and escorted them out.

 

“They had started providing their notice, they accused her [the staff member], to paraphrase, of killing people … after a while it became obvious that it wasn’t going to go anywhere so the security guard said, ‘it’s time to leave’,” Mr Topp said.

Biden Is Selling Weapons to the Majority of the World’s Autocracies

 

Despite the White House’s rhetoric about supporting global democracy, the U.S. sold weapons in 2022 to 57 percent of the world’s authoritarian regimes.

 

Since President Joe Biden came into office in 2021, he has described a “battle between democracies and autocracies” in which the U.S. and other democracies strive to create a peaceful world. The reality, however, is that the Biden administration has helped increase the military power of a large number of authoritarian countries. According to an Intercept review of recently released government data, the U.S. sold weapons to at least 57 percent of the world’s autocratic countries in 2022.

 

Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has been the world’s biggest weapons dealer, accounting for about 40 percent of all arms exports in a given year. In general, these exports are funded through grants or sales. There are two pathways for the latter category: foreign military sales and direct commercial sales.

 

The U.S. government acts as an intermediary for FMS acquisitions: It buys the materiel from a company first and then delivers the goods to the foreign recipient. DCS acquisitions are more straightforward: They’re the result of an agreement between a U.S. company and a foreign government. Both categories of sales require the government’s approval.

 

Country-level data for last year’s DCS authorizations was released in late April through the State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls. FMS figures for fiscal year 2022 were released earlier this year through the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency. According to their data, a total of 142 countries and territories bought weapons from the U.S. in 2022, for a total of $85 billion in bilateral sales.

 

How many of those countries were democracies, and how many were autocracies? That question can be answered by comparing the new U.S. arms sales data to political regime data from the Varieties of Democracy project at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, which uses a classification system that’s called Regimes of the World.

 

The system classifies regimes into four categories: closed autocracy, electoral autocracy, electoral democracy, and liberal democracy. For a country to be classified as a democracy, it must have multiparty elections and political freedoms that make those elections meaningful. According to this methodology, the dividing line between democracies and autocracies is whether a country’s leaders are accountable to their citizens through free and fair elections.

 

Of the 84 countries codified as autocracies under the Regimes of the World system in 2022, the United States sold weapons to at least 48, or 57 percent, of them. The “at least” qualifier is necessary because several factors frustrate the accurate tracking of U.S. weapons sales. The State Department’s report of commercial arms sales during the fiscal year makes prodigious use of “various” in its recipients category; as a result, the specific recipients for nearly $11 billion in weapons sales are not disclosed.

WHCA Advised Biden Admin On New Rules Governing Press Passes

 

The Biden administration consulted with “leaders” at the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) prior to rolling out new rules that govern press passes, a White House source confirmed to the Daily Caller.

 

The White House released a new set of rules on May 5 for journalists to be credentialed with a “hard pass,” mandating reporters work for “an organization whose principal business is news dissemination.” The new rules also state journalists with access must act in a “professional manner” and not impede “events or briefings.” Repeated offenders would face the possibility of having their hard pass revoked.

 

The WHCA — an organization committed to giving White House “access” to journalists — was initially reluctant to tell the Daily Caller whether they were involved with crafting the new policy.

 

“We aren’t going to comment at this time,” WHCA board member Tamara Keith said.

 

The White House revealed that the WHCA was indeed involved with creating a policy that includes, among other provisions, the potential for journalists to be booted from White House grounds.

 

“We have thoughtfully considered returning to prior guidelines for more than a year,” a White House official told the Daily Caller.

 

“As we neared a final decision, we informed White House Correspondents Association leadership of our plans and received feedback, as a result of which we made important updates to the policy, like accommodating permalancer and journalists without a residence in DC,” the official added.

 

Keith later confirmed to the Daily Caller that their feedback referred to “both the hardpass application and the paragraph about giving warnings and potentially revoking hard passes.”

 

“We expressed concern to the White House that this language could be abused by this or a future administration,” Keith said.

On Thursday, House Representatives debated the Secure the Border Act of 2023 as Title 42 expired at the southern border, which lays out sweeping new requirements and restrictions for securing the southern border.

 

The bill passed 219-213. Two Republicans, Reps. Thomas Massie and John Duarte voted along side all Democrat members against the bill.

 

The bill was introduced to the House of Representatives on May 2 in anticipation of the flood of illegal immigrants expected in the wake of Title 42, which allowed expulsions due to the pandemic emergency.

 

The bill calls for the "immediate resumption of border wall construction" no later than seven days after the bill is enacted, using previously set aside funds and materials for its construction.

 

No later than 180 days after the bill is enacted, a report shall be submitted to congressional committees that outlines a strategic 5-year technology investment plan for border security, including potential upgrades in security technology, communications equipment, screening equipment, incorporating in input from the private sector.

 

In an effort to retain Border Patrol personnel, the bill will authorize up to $100,000,000 in appropriated funds for the Commissioner of the US Customs and Border Protection to give to front-line agents who hold a position equal to or below level GS-12, has been with Border Patrol for five years or longer, and commits two additional years of service with Border Patrol upon acceptance of the bonus.

 

The bill also requires that the Commissioner hire and train enough Border Patrol agents to maintain an active duty presence of no less than 22,000 full-time agents.

 

The bill also includes a provision prohibiting the requirement to take a Covid-19 vaccine or adverse actions taken against a Department of Homeland Security employee.

 

The Secretary of Homeland Security would be required to send a report no later than 60 days after the bill is enacted on whether Mexican drug cartels meet the criteria for being designated as a foreign terrorist organization.

 

The bill amends the Immigration and Nationality Act, stating that those found not to be eligible for parole shall be deported from the country.

 

The bill also increases penalties for illegal entry or presence in the country from $50-$250 up to $500-$1000.

 

Illegal immigrants who overstay a visa are subject to imprisonment of no more than six months and/or a fine for the first offense, and a fine and/or no more than two years of imprisonment for subsequent offenses.

 

The bill also mandates the use of e-Verify, a system used to check if a person is authorized to work in the United States.

Biden, Hill leaders delay debt ceiling meeting as Treasury warns of looming deadline

 

The U.S. hit is spending limit of $31.38 trillion in January of this year, prompting Yellen to implement "extraordinary measures" to pay the government's bills.

 

President Joe Biden and the top leaders of Congress will not meet on Friday to discuss the debt ceiling as originally planned and will instead gather next week.

 

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy indicated that the delay was not a unilateral decision on the part of the White House, but that all parties had agreed to postpone.

 

"The White House didn’t cancel the meeting — all the leaders decided it was probably in the best of our interest," he said, according to the Washington Post.

 

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell were also expected to attend.

 

The delay comes as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned lawmakers that they have until June 1 to negotiate a plan to raise the debt ceiling or risk default.

 

The U.S. hit its spending limit of $31.38 trillion in January of this year, prompting Yellen to implement "extraordinary measures" to pay the government's bills.

 

In that time, Republicans have sought to extract budgetary concessions from the White House in exchange for raising the debt ceiling, though Biden has thus far not budged on the matter.

 

The Republican-led House in late April passed a measure to raise the debt ceiling for another year and to implement caps on spending growth so as to address the mounting national debt. Biden has vowed to veto the plan should it reach his desk.

 

McCarthy has eschewed the prospect of a short-term deal to avert a default, insisting it is time for Congress and the White House to settle the issue.

The chairman of CNN, Chris Licht, issued a robust defense on Thursday of his decision to broadcast a live town hall with former President Donald J. Trump, an unruly and at times bewildering event that has prompted criticism inside and outside of the network.

 

On a network-wide editorial call, Mr. Licht congratulated the moderator, Kaitlan Collins, on “a masterful performance” before acknowledging the public backlash. “We all know covering Donald Trump is messy and tricky, and it will continue to be messy and tricky, but it’s our job,” Mr. Licht said, according to a recording of the call obtained by The New York Times.

 

“I absolutely, unequivocally believe America was served very well by what we did last night,” Mr. Licht added. “People woke up, and they know what the stakes are in this election in a way that they didn’t the day before. And if someone was going to ask tough questions and have that messy conversation, it damn well should be on CNN.”

 

The town hall, which aired in prime-time on Wednesday, featured Mr. Trump deploying a fusillade of falsehoods, sometimes too quickly for the moderator to intercept. It was a preview of what American journalism can expect from a 2024 campaign with the former president, who despite his ubiquity in political life has rarely appeared on mainstream TV outside of Fox News since leaving office.

 

If the 2016 campaign showed that many Americans could not agree on common facts, the Babel-like nature of Wednesday’s New Hampshire town hall suggested that voters now occupied wholly different universes. Mr. Trump repeated a web of conspiracies about a stolen election and the “beautiful day” of the Capitol riot, language that was likely to befuddle half the viewing audience and resonate as gospel with the rest.

 

“The election was not rigged, Mr. President,” Ms. Collins said at one point. “You cannot keep saying that all night long.” (He kept saying it.)

 

The live audience, a group of Republicans and Republican-leaning independent voters, often cheered him on, even when he derided Ms. Collins as a “nasty person.”

 

“While we all may have been uncomfortable hearing people clapping, that was also an important part of the story,” Mr. Licht said on Thursday, “because the people in that audience represent a large swath of America. And the mistake the media made in the past is ignoring that those people exist. Just like you cannot ignore that President Trump exists.”

 

Critics said it was reckless for the network to provide a live forum to Mr. Trump, given his track record of spreading disinformation. Even the network’s own commentators appeared taken aback by what had transpired on its airwaves. “We don’t have enough time to fact check every lie he told,” Jake Tapper told viewers on Wednesday night.

The town hall was watched by 3.3 million people, according to Nielsen, a significant increase from CNN’s typical audience on an average weeknight at 8 p.m. But the Trump town hall fell short of the average viewership for Tucker Carlson’s Fox News program, which was seen by an average of 3.2 million people in the first three months of the year.

 

Mr. Licht, who took over CNN last year after the network was acquired by Warner Bros. Discovery, has had a rocky tenure, and some journalists there have bristled at his public comments that the network had veered too far into an anti-Trump stance when Mr. Trump was in the White House. Mr. Licht has said CNN must appeal to more centrists and conservative voters, a strategy that has support from his corporate superiors.

 

There were signs on Thursday that frustration inside CNN about the town hall was bubbling up. The network’s own media newsletter, “Reliable Sources,” published a tough assessment after the event, noting, “It’s hard to see how America was served by the spectacle of lies that aired on CNN Wednesday evening.”

 

The newsletter cited several critical posts on social media about the forum, including some people who faulted the network for choosing a town hall-style format where voters were free to cheer Mr. Trump and jeer Ms. Collins, the moderator.

 

CNN said it selected the audience members in the same manner as it had for past candidate forums. A network team traveled to New Hampshire and coordinated with community groups, faith-based organizations, local Republican officials and the student government at Saint Anselm College, which hosted the event.

 

CNN said the aim was to fill the auditorium with citizens representing a range of conservative views, but the network declined to identify specific groups that were consulted, saying it did not want activists trying to game the system at future events.

 

In keeping with past network practice, the Trump campaign was provided invitations for about 20 guests to attend the town hall, although these guests were not allowed to ask questions of the candidate. Officials at Saint Anselm College were allowed to invite about 70 people. The total audience was 300 to 350 people.

 

In the days leading up to the town hall, Ms. Collins prepared with the team in New Hampshire extensively, according to a person familiar with the matter, going over potential falsehoods Mr. Trump might utter onstage. Mr. Licht gave feedback, and Mr. Trump was played in mock debates by Mark Preston, CNN’s vice president of political and special events programming,

 

Mr. Licht’s decision to select Ms. Collins for the high-profile assignment underscored her rising prominence as an on-air anchor at CNN. The network is finalizing a multiyear contract with Ms. Collins that will make her the anchor of CNN’s currently vacant 9 p.m. hour, according to three people with knowledge of talks. That hour is a crucial time slot for advertisers, and Ms. Collins’s recent tryout in that time-slot last month drew favorable ratings.

 

Puck earlier reported that Ms. Collins was nearing a deal with CNN.

 

Ms. Collins’s deal, combined with Don Lemon’s recent ouster from CNN, means that the network will have to retool its morning show. The network is looking for new co-hosts to pair with Poppy Harlow, Ms. Collins’s co-anchor on “CNN This Morning.”

 

Some CNN critics had asserted that the network cut away early from the Trump event, which ended around 9:10 p.m. In fact, the event was always intended to last an hour or so, with a panel of analysts ready in a studio to take over coverage at the start of the 9 p.m. hour.

Chief House Investigator in Biden-China money scandal accuses media of cover-up

 

Rep. James Comer said that the media is blinded by partisanship and bias.

 

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky) blasted the mainstream media Thursday, accusing them of covering for the Biden family in their alleged crimes involving China and money laundering.

 

"The media is part of the problem," Comer told the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. "The Biden family wouldn't do things like this if they thought they would be held accountable in the media."

 

Comer previously said his committee had uncovered information suggesting that "10 or 12 Biden family members" participated in efforts to "launder or hide" money from "Communist China and other countries around the world."

 

The White House pushed back against Comer's probe this week, claiming it is an "evidence-free, politically-motivated 'investigation'" into the Biden family.

 

Comer remained focused on the media, calling them "tone deaf" for avoiding coverage of this scandal.

 

"I think every American wants to know what the Biden family did to receive all that money," he stated. "And I think the media is tone deaf to a certain degree. Their bias and partisanship blinds them."

 

He also accused the media of endangering America's national security through their lack of attention on the investigation.

 

"The media is an adversary," Comer stated. "The media is helping in this. The media has helped compromise our national security by not writing about this and by not demanding answers as to why the Biden family received that money."

Bill Gates enjoys music as much as the next person. But according to Paul Tollett, the founder of the uber-successful music festival Coachella, the billionaire philanthropist can't help but indulge his nerdier side.

Tollett, speaking to New Yorker writer John Seabrook for a recent profile, said Gates actually found the time to attend (or at least stop by) Coachella one year. (Some photo evidence suggests it might have been 2015.)

Initially, Gates remarked the festival could "last forever," as Seabrook writes, but he quickly amended the statement, listing the various "isms" that could spell disaster for the crowd of 99,000.

"Terrorism, botulism — you name it," Tollett said. "The guy's a walking actuarial table."

Earlier this year, Gates spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, about the threat of bioterrorism — or the intentional use of harmful diseases on a population.

"I think an epidemic, either naturally caused or intentionally caused, is the most likely thing to cause, say, 10,000 excess deaths," Gates said.

More recently, he wrote an op-ed warning about the dangers of airborne pathogens on public health.

"Epidemiologists say a fast-moving airborne pathogen could kill more than 30 million people in less than a year," he said. "And they say there is a reasonable probability the world will experience such an outbreak in the next 10-15 years."

Such a deadly pandemic hasn't occurred in recent history, Gates concedes, but he also says that should provide no comfort as to the possibility of one happening in the future — at Coachella or otherwise.

Former President Donald Trump leads rival Ron DeSantis in the latter’s state of Florida by eight points, an exclusive poll reveals. Forty-two percent say they’ll back Trump compared to 34 percent who support DeSantis. Among voters favorable to both Trump and DeSantis, Trump’s lead stretches to a 19 points and the most enthusiastic voters prefer Trump by 10 points.

 

Trump also dominates DeSantis on the policy front with 28 percent saying Trump is the better candidate to improve the economy and 6 percent preferring Trump to fight the culture war.

 

A plurality of the Florida respondents are most concerned with progressive politicians in Washington, D.C. Additional concerns include the border, election security, taxes and the cost of living.

 

Other declared candidates register support at two percent or less and 16 percent of those polled said they were undecided or had another unnamed candidate in mind.

 

On the national level, a recent poll by Washington Post/ABC News found President Biden trailing Trump by six points. Forty-four percent said they’d vote for Trump while just 38 percent said they’d vote for the current Oval Office occupant.

 

After recently announcing his bid for reelection, Biden has watched his approval ratings sink to their lowest yet—a dismal 36 percent. Fifty-six percent disapprove of his job performance (including 47 percent disapproving strongly). Just over 60 percent said Biden lacked the mental acuity for the demands of his office. Over half of voters—54 percent to 36 percent—said Trump handled the economy better than Biden.

 

Other polls suggest almost half of Democrats do not want Biden to run for another four years in office, with most citing Biden’s advanced age as their reason.

 

The poll from National Research Inc. and commissioned by American Greatness surveyed 500 likely Republican primary voters in the state of Florida using live telephone interviews (landline and cell) and text-to-online. The survey was conducted on May 8-9. The margin of error is +/- four percentage points.

Today, America First Legal (AFL) released documents obtained from a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that reveal shocking internal documents from the Office of Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention (TVTP) regarding so-called domestic terrorism.

 

An internal memo dated January 29, 2021, just eight days after Joe Biden was sworn in as President, reveals a “Choose Your Own Adventure” game-like memo for individuals to make “real-life decisions” based on “radicalization” scenarios with various fictitious characters. The scenarios describe political viewpoints like opinions on abortion and expanded government.

 

For example, one of these characters is “Ann” who is described as a “middle-aged pro-life advocate,” and another is “Courtney,” a “budding conspiracy theorist.” They also outline “Pete,” the “Anti-gov/authority Abusive Parent/Stepdad.”

 

Another document reveals DHS planned a “Family First” photoshoot to “show every day people doing every day tasks… to emphasize that domestic terrorism can happen to anyone, but that anyone can also help prevent it.”

Deming, New Mexico - May 10, 2023 – City of Deming and Luna County officials are proactively collaborating with local NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) and law enforcement agencies to prepare a plan for any potential influx of migrants following the redaction of Title 42.

 

In a recent meeting, local law enforcement agencies discussed the redaction of Title 42 at the US-Mexico border. Columbus Port Director Chavez shared that as of now, only five (5) individuals will be processed per day during regular business hours, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and then be transported to the CPC (Central Processsing Center) in El Paso, Texas by CBP (Customs and Border Patrol). He also mentioned that mass gatherings of 20 to 30 individuals might trigger CBP agents to shut down the port.

 

If the CPC and NGOs become overwhelmed, city and county officials plan to aid in transportation to a shelter set up at the fairgrounds in Dona Ana County. "As of now, our sole obligation is to help with transportation, if necessary," said Chris Brice, Luna County Manager. "We are hopeful and prepared to lend a helping hand if the situation calls for it," he added.

 

It has been confirmed that around 50 asylum seekers are being helped by NGOs in Palomas (Mexico). "While no drop-offs are expected within the city or county at this time, we are grateful for the crucial support these organizations provide to those seeking asylum," aid Aaron Sera, City Manager. "We want to reassure our community that our local agencies are working closely to ensure a safe and smooth transition during this change and adaptation," Sera added.

Biden Officials Advertise to Foreign Nationals How Best to Get into U.S. While Claiming ‘Borders are Not Open’

 

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, claims the United States-Mexico border is “not open” amid the administration’s ending of Title 42, an effective border control, while the agency advertises to foreign nationals around the world how best to get into the U.S. interior.

 

On Thursday evening, the Biden administration will lift Title 42 — the public health authority that has helped quickly remove nearly three million illegal aliens at the border since mid-2020. As a result, the administration is anticipating some 400,000 border crossers and illegal aliens to arrive at the border every month.

 

“I want to be very clear, our borders are not open,” Mayorkas said at a press briefing Thursday, touting how Biden’s DHS has massively expanded a Catch and Release network that has seen millions of border crossers and illegal aliens released directly into American communities.

 

“President Biden has led the largest expansion of lawful pathways in decades,” Mayorkas said, describing the Catch and Release network:

 

People from Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, and Nicaragua have arrived through lawfully available pathways … we are launching new and expanded family reunification parole processes for nationals of Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Honduras and are increasing use of the CBP One mobile app for individuals to schedule appointments at our ports of entry. [Emphasis added]

 

At the same time that Mayorkas claims the border is “not open,” DHS announced ad campaigns that will be aired to foreign nationals in Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America that advise would-be migrants to use the administration’s Catch and Release network to get into the U.S.

 

The ad campaign “includes information on lawful pathways they can potentially access, instead of putting their lives in the hands of dangerous and unscrupulous smugglers,” a DHS release states.

 

Most popular within Biden’s Catch and Release network is the administration’s parole pipeline, which releases tens of thousands of migrants into the U.S. interior every month from the border, many without court dates in federal immigration court.

 

Mayorkas, on Thursday, called the parole pipeline “a success” and proof that the Biden administration is effectively transforming the border into an orderly checkpoint for migrants.

 

From late January 2021 to February 2023, more than 880,000 migrants have been released into American communities through the parole pipeline. This is a foreign population that exceeds the cities of Seattle, Washington; Denver, Colorado; and Nashville, Tennessee, among others.

On Wednesday, 45th President and leading presidential candidate Donald Trump received an instant standing ovation at a CNN primetime Town Hall with CNN Anchor Kaitlan Collins in New Hampshire.

Amid an 83 percent decline in ratings, CNN announced in a statement last Monday they will be hosting a primetime Town Hall with Trump.

 

“With the 2024 presidential election underway, CNN Anchor Kaitlan Collins will moderate a live CNN Town Hall with former President Donald Trump at 9pmET on Wednesday, May 10 from St. Anselm College in New Hampshire,” the statement reads.

 

Popular Information newsletter author, Judd Legum, said, “First, CNN systematically purged anyone on the network who was deemed too anti-Trump. Now this.”

 

Former MSNBC host and avid anti-Trumper, Keith Olbermann, said, “I think we can say Chris Licht’s conversion of CNN into a political and journalistic whorehouse is complete.”

 

CNN suffered a devastating loss of primetime viewers during the week of February 27, while President Trump is experiencing massive gains in his poll numbers and ratings.

 

According to a report, CNN dropped 71 percent in total prime-time viewers, 83 percent among viewers aged 25 to 54 in primetime viewership, and 62 percent in total day viewers.

 

CNN isn’t the only anti-Trump ‘news’ outlet suffering failing ratings, either. The Washington Post, nicknamed “The Washington Compost” by Trump, has lost a devastating 500,000 subscribers since Trump left office and is considering selling part of its tech business.

 

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the far-left newspaper’s subscriber count dropped from three million in 2021 to now two and a half million, a 20 percent decline.

 

Vice News, another far-left outlet, is reportedly preparing to file for bankruptcy.

 

This must be music to President Trump’s ears. In 2017, Trump said, “Newspapers, television, all forms of media will tank if I’m not there. Because without me, their ratings are going down the tubes.”

 

Meanwhile, Trump’s speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) outperformed all other cable news rankings.

 

According to a “Cable News Rankings” report, posted by Trump, the total viewership of Cable News Rankings on Saturday, March 4, 2023, revealed Fox News’s coverage of Trump’s speech at CPAC topped the ranking with over 1.6 million viewers. Newsmax’s coverage of Trump’s speech also made the ranking with over 600,000 viewers.

 

Trump also overflowed the venue of CPAC with a huge crowd of supporters that even included the former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro.

 

Trump’s CPAC speech was held in the Potomac Ballroom of the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. The ballroom can hold 5,520 people seated. Trump’s audience was packed to the brim and there were even more people watching from outside of the ballroom.

 

With polls showing Trump in the lead amongst all potential Republican and Democrat challengers, any potential candidate will have an impossible battle if they attempt to usurp the favorite to win the 2024 nomination.

He's Back! CNN's Townhall Proves Trump Is Once Again the Dominant Figure of American Politics

 

He's back!

 

Actually, he never went away. But now, former President Donald Trump is once again the clearly dominant figure on the American political scene, far eclipsing everyone else, including the sitting President.

 

On Thursday night, he made a long-awaited return to CNN, the lion's den of what he calls "fake news," for a primetime townhall broadcast live from New Hampshire. Moderated by Kaitlan Collins, the forum offered the former president a chance to address a wide range of issues, take questions from voters, and perhaps most importantly, demonstrate that he remains the 800 pound gorilla of the Republican Party.

 

It began with a discussion of the 2020 election results. Collins challenged Trump on his claims that the race was "rigged," but Trump held firm that it was not a truly fair election. Indeed, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg pumped $400 million into key states for drop boxes, get out the vote operations, ballot harvesting and other activity that heavily favored Democrats. Just weeks before the election, the FBI worked with Twitter and other social media companies to suppress the New York Post's factual story of Hunter Biden's laptop, and all of the evidence of Biden family corruption on it. At the same time, 51 current and former intelligence officials signed a letter falsely claiming the laptop was "Russian disinformation." And the pandemic allowed for the expansion of mass mail-in voting, early voting, and relaxed signature verification standards, opening up at the least the possibility of abuse.

 

While Trump didn't get into many of these specifics, they're the kinds of machinations that swayed the election.

 

When asked by a voter if he would "suspend polarizing talk" of election fraud during the current campaign, Trump replied, "Let's just win it again and straighten out our country."

 

Turning to the events of January 6, 2021, Trump referred to his tweets that day encouraging peaceful protests, respect for law enforcement, an end to the violence, and a dispersal of the crowds—tweets which were removed by Twitter. He also placed the blame squarely on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who were responsible for Capitol and District security.

 

"I offered them 10,000 soldiers… if they would have taken 500 soldiers, we wouldn't have the problem," Trump said. "They turned it down. And if you look at the Inspector General report, he says they turned it down. They made a terrible mistake," he said.

 

He also indicated a willingness to pardon "many" January 6 defendants, saying the non-violent protesters have been "persecuted" by the Biden administration, while many violent Black Lives Matter and Antifa protesters were not prosecuted at all.

 

"I'm not trying to justify anything, but there are two standards of justice in this country," Trump added, to vocal approval from the audience.

 

Trump offered spirited pushback on his myriad legal issues, including the classified documents and Georgia election cases, and the indictment brought by a New York grand jury. In all instances, his actions were legal and correct, he said, reinforcing his longstanding—and accurate—position that he's been subjected to endless "witch-hunts" intended to destroy him and his candidacy.

 

On policy, Trump blasted Biden's anemic economy, open border catastrophe, disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, and endless support for the Ukraine war. He also strongly defended the Second Amendment and argued for more effective attention to mental health, demurred on a national abortion ban, and called for a return to U.S. energy independence, a critically important feat he achieved as president.

 

Throughout, Trump was Trump, batting away questions in his signature rapid-fire manner and deploying his quick wit. He appeared relaxed and in command, so it's no wonder that his haters went into total meltdown.

 

New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for example tweeted that "CNN should be ashamed of themselves. They have lost total control of this 'town hall' to again be manipulated into platforming election disinformation, defenses of Jan 6th, and a public attack on a sexual abuse victim. The audience is cheering him on and laughing at the host."

“How do we approach, how do we talk to the abusers for whom we feel revulsion? Yes, they too are children of God. But how can you love them?” Francis was quoted as saying.

 

The 86-year-old leader of the Roman Catholic Church was responding to a question from a Hungarian Jesuit who asked: “The Gospel asks us to love, but how do we love at the same time people who have experienced abuse and their abusers?”

 

The pope acknowledged that the answer to this “powerful question” was “not easily at all.”

 

Francis explained that a sexual predator was to be condemned, “but as a brother” still deserving of love and care.

 

“There is a logic, a form of loving the enemy that is also expressed in this way,” he added. “And it is not easy to understand and to live out. The abuser is an enemy.”

 

While the pope was talking about sexual abuse writ large, the subtext to his answer is the staggering scandal that has rocked the Catholic Church involving generations of pedophile priests abusing hundreds of thousands of children all over the world.

 

As recently as last month, a Maryland state report revealed that more than 150 Catholic priests with the Archdiocese of Baltimore molested some 600 children, mostly with impunity, over the course of 80 years.

 

“When you hear what abuse leaves in the hearts of abused people, the impression you get is very powerful,” Francis told his fellow Jesuits during the April 29 meeting in Budapest, Hungary. “Even talking to the abuser involves revulsion; it’s not easy.”

 

“But they are God’s children too,” he noted, referring to sexual predators. “They deserve punishment, but they also deserve pastoral care. How do we provide that? No, it is not easy.”

 

During his 10 years on the throne of St. Peter in the Vatican, Francis has created a commission on child molestation prevention and has tightened church laws addressing clerical sexual abuse.

 

But the pontiff’s efforts to redress the crisis have been hampered by a spate of high-profile resignations from his Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.

 

Last week, Francis urged the remaining members of the panel to pursue a “spirituality of reparation” with sexual abuse survivors.

Rochdale grooming: Men filmed unconscious girl's sexual assault, jury told

 

Eight men are currently on trial at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester

 

An unconscious teenager was filmed being sexually assaulted as members of a grooming gang laughed, a court has heard.

 

The youngster, referred to as Girl A, was 12 when the alleged abuse began in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

 

She and another young girl, known as Girl B, were allegedly plied with drink and drugs before being sexually abused for four years by men in the town.

 

Eight defendants deny a total of 80 sexual offences between 2002 and 2006.

 

Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard the girls would often be picked up from outside their schools while they were still wearing their uniforms.

 

They were then sexually assaulted against a school wall, in cars, in public parks, on Saddleworth Moor and in flats and houses in Rochdale, the court heard.

 

Neil Usher, prosecuting, said the video demonstrated the defendants' attitude towards the girls.

 

"The girls were mere objects for the defendants to use, abuse, humiliate then discard," he said.

 

Mr Usher told the jury of another occasion when Girl A was urinated on by a group of men in a public park while she was being sexually assaulted.

 

Prosecutors said it had taken place because she had refused to carry out a sexual act for a gang member.

 

On another occasion she was asked to "do it for the team" and have sex with a defendant's uncle from Pakistan since he had "never had sex with a white girl".

 

It is alleged she was offered £5,000 to marry him so he could stay in the UK.

 

Jurors also heard the girl was "trapped" in a bedroom for hours and forced to perform sexual acts on men as they took turns.

 

The allegations only came to light in 2015 after Girl A, while attending a parenting course, told of being "beaten and raped". Police were then contacted.

 

She told course workers: "They did as they pleased, they made videos of me to use as blackmail.

 

"They sent the video around Rochdale anyway and I was branded a slag for it."

 

As a result of what she told the police, they spoke with Girl B, a childhood friend.

 

The court heard Girl A first met a group of young men who were friends of one of the defendants, 38-year-old Mohammed Ghani, when she was 12.

 

She said Mr Ghani allegedly sexually abused her in the presence of an 11-year-old friend.

 

Jurors also heard Girl B was 13 when her alleged abuse began.

 

Girl A would be "bombarded" with telephone calls from the men, being "on demand" every day, and encouraged to get drunk, the court heard.

 

It is also alleged she was also given as many as 10 ecstasy pills while being sexually abused.

In the summer of 2020, police confirmed that two people fired shots during an fight in Austin between a motorist and a Black Lives Matter-Antifa protester. The protester was shot and killed during the altercation.

 

Police say that the man who was killed, Garrett Foster, was armed and confronted the vehicle — but was not the other person who fired shots (meaning Perry).

 

The Austin Police announced during a late-night press conference in July 2020 that Foster was carrying a rifle and may have approached the vehicle prior to the shooting.

 

Prior to being fatally shot, Garrett Foster said on camera that the “people who hate us” are “too big of pussies to actually do anything about it” when asked why he was carrying a rifle.

However, lacking a Caucasian person to imitate MVP Randy Bass, the rabid crowd seized a plastic statue of Colonel Sanders (like Bass, the Colonel had a beard and was not Japanese) from a nearby KFC and tossed it off the bridge as an effigy.

According to the urban legend, this impulsive maneuver cost the team greatly, beginning the Curse of the Colonel, which states that the Tigers will not win the championship again until the statue is recovered. After last week's massive non-seasonally-adjusted deposit outflows (and shrinking Fed balance sheet), all eyes will be back on The Fed's H.4.1. report this evening for signs that the regional banking crisis is accelerating even further (as PacWest's statement and regional bank shares suggest). The answer is not a good sign for the bulls as Money Market Funds saw $18.3 billion of INFLOWS, pushing the aggregate to a record high of $5.328 trillion. That is almost $120 billion of inflows in the last three weeks. Cap1-2 Retail funds saw over $12 billion in inflows while institutional was just $6 billion. This surge in money market fund inflows strongly suggests tomorrow's H8 deposit report will show the bank run is accelerating. However, the most anticipated financial update of the week - the infamous H.4.1. showed the world's most important balance sheet shrank for the 7th straight week last week, but only by a tiny $977 million, notably more than last week's tumble (helped by a $43bn QT) The Total Securities held outright on The Fed balance sheet actually increased (so much for QT) by $461 million-cap#3 The total size of the Fed's backstopping facilities remained extremely high at around $305.4 billion-cap#4. But, more problematically, the demand for the Bank Term Funding Program surged by $8 billion to $83.1 billion -a new high

 

The drop in the discount window usage corresponds to the rise in the 'Other Credit Extensions' which looks like the loan to backstop the FRC deal. (so there is a stigma in using the discount window..as to say if you are seen using it you are (publically) "in trouble" so they don't use it unless they have to.)

 

Away from the FDIC loans, The Fed has a total of $92.4 billion of loans outstanding to financial institutions through two backstop lending facilities in the week through May 10, dramatically higher than the $81.1 billion the previous week. "You do not have to like the former president's answers, but you can't say that we didn't get them," Licht said, according to Stelter. "While we all may have been uncomfortable hearing people clapping, that was also an important part of the story… America was served very well by what we did last night."
