BBC fights ‘fake news’ with fake Twitter accounts

The state-funded UK broadcaster operates several “sockpuppet” accounts representing different political viewskek

 

A journalist with BBC Verify, the British broadcaster’s new fact-checking spinoff, has admitted to deploying multiple fake Twitter accounts to combat “disinformation.”

 

In a segment broadcast on Saturday, BBC “disinformation correspondent” Marianna Spring warned the audience that “mistruths can cause really serious harm to societies and the people in them.” She then revealed she had set up multiple “undercover accounts” on Twitter for the BBC’s Americast broadcast, each one representing different political views so as to better “interrogate” the viewpoints of the network’s target audience.

 

While the deception was portrayed as an attempt to “understand polarization online” by observing a cross-section of what kind of content social media platforms are recommending to different demographics, all three “characters” were white women. Emma, a 25-year-old atheist graphic designer with a “live-in partner” based in New York City, hails from the “progressive left.” Britney, a recently-divorced 50-year-old mother of three living in Houston, comes from the “populist right” and works as a school secretary. Gabriela, 44, a married mother of three who moonlights as a nanny, is cast as a “stressed sideliner.”

 

The graphics surrounding the fake profiles suggested a presence across Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, though the network stopped short of revealing its sock-puppets’ usernames. Twitter explicitly forbids using the platform to “artificially amplify or suppress information or engage in behavior that manipulates or disrupts people’s experience or platform manipulation defenses,” and most other social media platforms have similar policies.

 

According to the BBC, its Verify division consists of a team of 60 “forensic journalists and expert talent” from within the network, tasked with “fact-checking, verifying video, countering disinformation, analyzing data, and – crucially – explaining complex stories in the pursuit of truth.”

 

The BBC got a £20 million ($24.13 million) shot in the arm from the UK government earlier this year specifically to “counter disinformation,” with Foreign Secretary James Cleverly hailing the network as “the world’s most trusted international broadcaster.”

 

However, critics have called out the BBC for putting out what they claim are heavily biased and outright fabricated stories, particularly with regard to the conflict in Ukraine, even while the network continues to portray “disinformation” as the exclusive province of Russian media.

 

The network has nurtured the careers of ‘Russian bot’ hunters like the Atlantic Council alumnus Ben Nimmo, who has made a livelihood out of reclassifying genuine political dissent as “coordinated inauthentic behavior,”and having its practitioners deplatformed as state operatives. The BBC has also hostedgovernment-controlled journalists tasked with waging information warfare against Russia, while its “charitable” arm, BBC MediaAction, engaged in covert operations designed to “weaken the Russian state’s influence” in the Balkans.kekkity

I carefully reviewed the Durham Report. Durham pulls punches on many key players and his Report shows he did not seriously investigate many obvious criminal leads concerning the abuse of Trump. Durham's cramped analysis on why he couldn't prosecute many of the crimes he uncovered should not be the final word on the matter. The next honest president should direct a new review for further possible prosecution of the issues raised or ignored by Durham Report.

Lukashenko laughs off ‘serious illness’ rumors

The 68-year-old president reassured Belarusian officials they will have to “suffer with me for a very long time”

 

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has dismissed rumors that he is severely ill, telling officials that he contracted a common cold and is “not going to die.” Speculation about the leader’s health has swirled for weeks, after he appeared to be unwell at the Victory Day parade in Moscow.

 

Lukashenko addressed the claims during a lengthy government meeting about healthcareon Tuesday, saying “If someone thinks I'm going to die, calm down.”

 

“This is nothing more than idle speculation in messengers and Telegram channels. Adenovirus or whatever it was? Adenovirus. Nothing. It can be treated in three days,” he said. “But since I didn't have the opportunity to be treated, all this has accumulated…I'm not going to die, guys. You will suffer with me for a very long time.”

 

Belarusian opposition figure Svetlana Tikhanovskaya helped to fuel the rumors about the president’s health earlier this month. After Lukashenko did not appear in public for around one week in the wake of the Victory Day march in the Russian capital, she urgedher supporters to be “well prepared for every scenario” in the event he is severely ill, apparently hoping for a regime change.

 

A vocal critic of Lukashenko, Tikhanovskaya fled Belarus in 2020 during a bout of riots and civil unrest following that year’s presidential election, and has since claimed she leads a government in exile.

 

Soon after the Western-backed opposition activist weighed in on Lukashenko’s purported illness, a state-affiliated news outlet released a photo of the president, in an apparent bid to dispel the gossip. However, the claims did not die down, and speculation was again stoked when the leader missed an annual ceremony in Minsk on May 14, with some unconfirmed reports even stating he was hospitalized.

 

Under the Belarusian constitution, if the president were incapacitated or unable to fulfill his official duties, his role would be temporarily passed on to the speaker of the Council of the Republic – the country’s upper house of parliament – until another round of elections could be held. Natalya Kochanova, Lukashenko’s former chief of staff and a close ally to the president, currently holds the speaker position.

What is Paxlovid?

An attorney representing an IRS whistleblower who is seeking to expose “preferential treatment” in an investigation into Hunter Biden claims the Department of Justice has taken retaliatory action by removing their client from the probe.

 

Attorney Mark Lytle has written a letter to several members of Congress to reveal the DOJ also removed the whistleblowers entire team from the IRS’ investigation into Hunter Biden’s taxes.

A trespassing charge against a conservative activist investor who was arrested at Berkshire Hathaway’s recent shareholder meeting after bringing up dead pedophile Jeffrey Epstein has been dropped.

The Daily Wire has learned that a prosecutor in Omaha, Nebraska, informed Peter Flaherty, chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), last week that he reviewed the case and declined prosecution.

While the prosecutor could not immediately be reached for comment, Flaherty said in a phone call on Tuesday that it was “the weakest case imaginable” and is “glad” the charge is no more.

At the annual meeting in Omaha earlier this month, Flaherty had been recognized to speak in support of a proposal to require the roles of CEO and chairman be held by two different people. Both of those titles are held by Warren Buffett, and Flaherty argued the Omaha-based company would be less identified with Buffett’s political activities if the chair was independent.

After getting into how Buffett donated billions of dollars to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates’ foundation, as well as efforts supporting Critical Race Theory and gender ideology, Flaherty said a Berkshire official approached to tell him to stay on topic. Buffett gave him the go-ahead to continue, and that’s when Flaherty mentioned Gates’ ties to Epstein.

“We know how much Bill Gates cares about children,” Flaherty said. “He met and traveled with Jeffrey Epstein many times after Epstein was convicted of sex crimes.” Video posted to social media shows the audience erupted in boos and some whistling when Flaherty brought up Epstein.

Flaherty continued to speak about the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation when he says two security officials removed him from the venue and Omaha police arrested him. Arrest documents show Flaherty had been charged with refusing to comply with a request to leave. He was released on a $250 bond and was expected back in court on May 22 until the case was dropped.

An elderly millionaire locked up on child pornography charges and his squad of goons were allegedly caught cooking up a plan to break him out of a Florida jail and jet him off to his castle in France, police said.

John Manchec, 78, is accused of enlisting other inmates and friends from the outside to assault Indian River County Jail officers before rushing him off on a private jet, the county’s Sheriff Eric Flowers announced Monday.

“This is a real deal. This guy’s been charged with child pornography. He’s in our jail. He’s trying to escape. He thinks he’s going to have these guys attack our corrections folks,” Flowers said.

“Fortunately, our detectives and our team were able to intercept this and they did a fantastic job. And because of it, they’re all facing additional charges.”

The escape plot centered on an April 12 medical appointment.

Manchec — who was arrested in 2014 on 49 counts of possession of child pornography but fled to France until his capture in 2020 — would attend the scheduled visit while his lackeys would “plan to intercept” the Corrections transport vehicle at the outside medical facility, according to police.

His cellmate, Byron Harvey, and another unnamed accomplice were allegedly stationed to attack the Corrections Deputies with pepper spray before freeing Manchec and taking him to an undisclosed location.

The Aero Shade company owner had allegedly hired multiple vehicles to facilitate the escape and take him to his private airport near the Fort Pierce Regional Airport, where he would then flee to his medieval estate in southern France, the Chateau Pechrigal.

Manchec’s footmen also prepared his 140-foot yacht for the grand plan, police allege. Manchec even paid Harvey’s bail and then allowed them to live in his home in exchange for packing Manchec’s suitcase and ordering his favorite liquor, the sheriff said.

Manchec, who has dual citizenship in France and the US, is accused of putting the four accomplices on his company payroll in the leadup to the breakout — until one tipped deputies off two months before its execution.

Investigators began listening into Manchec’s jailhouse phone calls and discovered he used the code word “paint job” while talking with his employees about the plot.

Flowers said the plan was to go “back to his castle in France” and never have to face the charges.

Russia opposes ‘freezing’ Ukraine conflict – Kremlin

The only option is to complete the military operation, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said

 

Russia is “in solidarity” with the West on the view that the conflict in Ukraine cannot be frozen, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with Russia’s TASS news agency on Wednesday.

 

Asked whether Russia was considering putting the fighting on hold, Peskov stated thatMoscow is only considering the option of “completing the special military operation,” which means securing Russia’s interests and achieving its goalseither through military, or other available means.

 

The spokesperson said it’s premature to talk about a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict, as there are no prerequisites for such an outcome yet.

 

“It is unlikely that we can talk about real negotiations with any of the representatives of the current Kiev authorities,because there [in Ukraine] any negotiations with the Russian Federation are simply prohibited now,” Peskov explained.

 

Earlier, the German chancellor stated that any peace talks on the situation in Ukraine cannot aim to freeze the conflict. “Russia must withdraw its troops,” Olaf Scholz insisted on the sidelines of the G7 summit on Sunday.

 

Meanwhile, the US is reportedly seeking to stretch out the conflict for years or even decades. According to the Politico news website, Joe Biden’s administration has been considering freezing the fighting instead of pushing for Ukraine’s victory, with the goal of achieving a situation similar to that between North and South Korea.

 

“A Korea-style stoppage is certainly something that’s been discussed by experts and analysts in and out of government,” a source told the outlet. “It’s plausible, because neither side would need to recognize any new borders, and the only thing that would have to be agreed is to stop shooting along a set line.”

 

The benefit of such a scenario for the US would be that it would cost less for Western nations to support Ukraine, draw less public attention, and reduce the pressure to assist Kiev. Additionally,it would allow Ukraine to continue switching its military to NATO standards, in the hope of joining the military alliance.

 

Russia, meanwhile, has repeatedly criticized NATO’s expansion into Europe and its attempts to build a presence in Ukrainewithout the country’s formal accession. Moscow has cited such moves as one of the key reasons for launching its military offensive in February 2022. (Accession from what? Ukraine is considered a protectorate of Russia, is that what this means, would they have to accede from Russia?)

Lost documents leave world’s largest nuclear power plant in limbo

An employee has placed Japan’s Kashiwazaki-Kariwa facility under further scrutiny after leaving security papers on the roof of a car

 

The reopening of the world’s biggest nuclear power plant, Japan’s Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, has been placed in further doubt after an employee working from home lost a pile of documents by leaving them on top of a car.

 

Kashiwazaki-Kariwa was initially shut down in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima disaster, and the Japanese nuclear watchdog extended a ban on operations earlier this week, citing safety concerns.

 

In a statement released on Monday, the plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco), revealed that the employee in questionhad lost a stack of papers by placing them on a car roof and driving off.

 

The facility found out about the incident after a local resident discovered some of the documents, which detailed how to deal with fires and floods. However,38 pages are still unaccounted for.

 

Tepco said it had issued warnings to the employee and a manager, adding that it would enforce stringent rules on taking documents and information off-site.

 

After the 2011 accident at Fukushima, the Japanese government decided to take all 54 of the nation’s commercial nuclear plants offline for maintenance and structural review.

 

To date,only 10 units have been restarted, with 18 more expected to resume operations by 2030.

 

Also on Monday, Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority announced the decision to keep an effective ban in place on Kashiwazaki-Kariwa’s operations. The watchdog stressed that the movement of fuel to the facility will remain prohibited until Tepco demonstrates full compliance with a list of 27 safety criteria.

 

While the situation at two of the seven units at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa was deemed satisfactory, the authoritiesexpressed concern over the power plant’s management, in particular its security arrangements.

 

According to Japan’s NHK media outlet, the regulatorflagged lax provisions for anti-terrorism measures as well as unauthorized entry into restricted areas. The watchdog also reportedly pointed to the inadequacy of security monitoring equipment required in the event of adverse weather conditions.

A president elected on a promise to bring peace is offering his people as cannon fodder for external powers who are using them to fight a proxy war

 

Every May, Vladimir Zelensky makes a show of proving that he remains what Ukrainians elected him to be:a servant of the people. This is part of the comedian-turned-politician’s myth, borrowed from the eponymous TV show he fronted prior to seeking high office.

On the anniversary of his inauguration, every May 20, he gives a showpiece performance in the form of a report on the past year of his rule. He plays the role of the “servant,”informing his “masters” – the voters of Ukraine.

Just two years ago, and it seems like ages now, Zelensky chose the Antonov aircraft hangar and a huge, unfinished Mriya cargo plane without wings (a Soviet project that independent Ukraine hadspent 30 years talking about getting moving again) – as his backdrop. He went on to paint Ukrainians a beautiful picture of their country’s future, in which the Mriya (which means ‘dream’ in the local language) would finally take to the skies. Less than a year later, soldiers under Zelensky’s commandbombed both the hangarwhere he held the press conferenceand the plane, which never managed to take off.

Everything seemed possible in Zelensky’s world, but he did forget one thing. Two years ago, when he was talking about turning Ukraine into a new Eden,he forgot the main promisethat prompted Ukrainians to vote for him:his pledge to bring peace. Now, it’s even funny to remember the words the “servant of the people” uttered in his inaugural speech on May 20, 2019: “Our first priority is a ceasefire [in Kiev’s war with the Donbass]… I would not hesitate to lose my position for the sake of peace.”

Over the intervening years, Zelensky has remained true to his tradition and has continued to report as a true servant. But as time has passed he has acquired new masters – the US leadership. This is a very significant change and confirms that, for Zelensky,Ukraine and its peoplehave long been nothing more than a prop for his bloody adventures and their future well-being certainly is not part of the plan.

His visit to Japan for the G7 summit was yet another venue in whichto beg for weapons. Ukrainian diplomats take great offense when elements of the Western press liken Zelensky’s foreign trips to a traveling circus, but that is the reality. The whole point of his many trips is to raise yet more funds, and promises, to keep the war going – and thus to keep Ukrainians dying. As retired Italian general Marco Bertolini rightly pointed out the other day,if Western arms supplies to Ukraine had stopped, “the warwould have ended a year ago and would not have cost hundreds of thousands of lives.”

The worst part is that everyone understands this very well. However, even with the full knowledge that supplying Kiev withnew lethal weaponsmeans using Ukrainians ascannon fodder, the West keeps pumping in supplies. Of course, those same Ukrainians were promised Zelensky as a “servant” two years ago before he found himself some new masters.

In Hiroshima, Zelensky fawned over his current bosses as best he could.He pathetically likened his request for F-16 jets to seeking “wings for freedom.” A very unwise statement, given the parallels with his promises to give wings to the Mriya two years ago.

Now, sitting next to the US president, Zelensky had to explain the loss of the city he had long called a fortress, and ended up spewing nonsense about its current status on the same weekend it was fully occupied by Russian soldiers. It was clear from his reaction how painful the loss of Artyomovsk was for Zelensky. It was not the news that the “servant of America” expected to deliver to his current masters gathered in Hiroshima.

To sweeten the bitter pill of the humiliating defeat in Donbass, the Ukrainian president is trying tolabel the West’s promises to provide Kiev with F-16 fighter jets as a victory. What this will look like in practice, it will bring the world to a potential catastrophe.

Of course, Hiroshima is probably the best place to assess the consequences and understand how they could affect the entire planet. Especially the Ukrainian people, whom Zelensky promised to serve faithfully four years ago.But his promises to his new master are very different: not peace, but war.

"The River of Blood"is a monument located on a golf course in Lowes Island, Virginia, owned by former President of the United States Donald Trump. Two years later, on June 27–28, 1863, General J.E.B. Stuart led 4,500 Confederate soldiers north across the Potomac at Rowser's Ford from the Lowes Island area, on the ride to Gettysburg, but no fatalities were recorded.[4]

 

According to the president of the Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area Association, the only Civil War battle in the area was the Battle of Ball's Bluff, 11 miles (18 km) upriver.[1] Other historians consulted by The New York Times for a story in 2015 agreed; one of them had written to the Trump Organization about the falsehood. Wagner chief reveals losses in fight for key Donbass city

Ukrainian casualties during the battle for Artyomovsk were several times higher than Russian ones, Evgeny Prigozhin has claimed

 

The head of the Wagner private military company, Evgeny Prigozhin, has revealed that the grouplost around 20,000 servicemenduring the liberation of the strategic Donbass city of Artyomovsk, also known as Bakhmut, from Ukrainian forces.

 

In an interview published by Wagner’s press service on Tuesday, Prigozhin said that during the long-running battle hehad boosted the company’s ranks with 50,000 inmates from Russian prisons, who wereoffered the chance to fightinstead of completing their sentences.

 

“Around 20%of them have died,” Prigozhin said. “The casualties among them were the same as among those who enlisted by contract with us.”

 

This suggests that Wagner’s losses in Artyomovsk, which is a key settlement in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), amounted tosome 10,000 former prisoners and 10,000 military professionals.

 

Around20% of Wagner’s forces had also received injuriesthat would require at least three months to recover from, Prigozhin stated.

 

However, he insisted that the Ukrainian military had suffered far greater losses in what he previously called “the Bakhmut meat-grinder.”

 

“We’vedestroyed 50,000 troops of the Ukrainianarmed forces [in Artyomovsk],” the Wagner chief claimed, adding thatanother 50,000 to 70,000had been seriously wounded. (So that means Ukraine has had about 100,000 dead and another 120,000 injured in this war)

 

Prigozhin announced on Saturday that the operation to take control of Artyomovsk, which had been spearheaded by Wagner, had ended and that the city had been “fully captured.” The battle for themajor logistics hub had been fought for 224 days, he added.

 

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed later the same day that the city had been taken, with President Vladimir Putin congratulating Wagner servicemen and regular Russian military troops on their success.

 

Ukraine, which previously claimed that Artyomovsk would be defended at any cost and would become a turning point in the conflict with Moscow,has thus far refused to admit the loss of the city.

 

On Sunday, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that the settlement “is only in our hearts” when asked by US counterpart Joe Biden at the G7 summit in Japan if Kiev still controlled Artyomovsk. A few hours later, Zelensky changed his stance and denied that the settlement was “occupied by Russia.”
