FBI’s killing of Utah man prompts questions from neighbors

Residents ask if Craig Robertson, who could ‘barely get around’ but posted threats against Biden, ‘warranted that kind of response’

A clearer picture is emerging of the 75-year-old Utah man shot dead by the FBI after they tried to serve a search warrant hours before Joe Biden arrived in the state on a re-election campaign swing.

But questions are also being asked as to whether Craig Robertson was a “credible threat”, as the FBI claims, or as neighbors in Provo, Utah, have described to local media as a man harboring anti-government views who walked with a cane and liked to bluster and tell big stories, especially on social media.

Robertson had posted threats against the president, including asking whether Utah would become famous “as the place a sniper took out Biden the Marxist”. He’d also urged Utah residents to fire their guns into the air when Air Force One arrived, the Deseret News reported.

Late last month Robertson posted a message: “Hey FBI, you still monitoring my social media? Checking so I can be sure to have a loaded gun handy in case you drop by again.”

On 6 August, three days before Biden’s visit, according to a 37-page federal complaint, Robertson posted: “I hear Biden is coming to Utah. Digging out my old ghillie suit and cleaning the dust off the M24 sniper rifle.”

The legal complaint alleged interstate threats, threats against the president, and influencing, impeding and retaliating against federal law enforcement officers by threat, Robertson represented a “willful true threat to kill or cause injury to President Biden”.

He had also made threats against a whole host of familiar liberal politicians and officials including California governor Gavin Newsom, US attorney general Merrick Garland, Vice-President Kamala Harris and New York’s progressive district attorney Alvin Bragg.

CBS News reported it was told by law enforcement that the man had engaged FBI agents in a gunfight when they attempted to serve a warrant.

A neighbor told the Deseret News that he witnessed several unmarked vehicles block the street early on Wednesday and heard agents shout: “Craig Robertson, please come out with your hands up” before flash grenades were heard.

The neighbor, Cooper Robinson, said he then heard “shouting and some yelling, I couldn’t pick out what they were saying. But at some point I did hear five shots fired.”

Nyla Rollins, another neighbor, estimated that 50 agents were involved. “They called for my neighbor … to come out. And he’s like, ‘I’m not coming out [expletive].’ And then I didn’t hear anything after that,” Rollins told the News.

Questions are being asked if the FBI’s response was unduly harsh. “The FBI just came and shot an elderly man from my ward,” Travis Clark told the paper. “You know, a guy who’s nearly 80 years old, 300 pounds and can barely get around with a cane.”

Despite his anti-government rhetoric, Robertson was described as the “teddy bear” in the church congregation who was so immobilized that he’d drive 200 yards to church.

He was also known as a talented carpenter who built intricate coffee tables and rocking chairs. Despite being known as a gun collector he was not thought to carry at all times. “If he carried, we never knew about it,” Clark said to the Deseret News. “We all knew he had guns, that he collected guns … but I mean, it’s Utah.”

Neighbors also said he’d make “off-color” political comments, but nothing that rose to threats of violence and political assassination.

“I just think he was an old kook shooting his mouth off,” Clark said. “There was nothing he ever did that would have made me think that he was either mentally or physically capable of doing anything. And anybody who knew him knew that.

“I just can’t believe that this man warranted that kind of response,” Clark added.

Robertson had previously been visited by agents at his home where he had rejected their concern about his online comments. “I said it was a dream!’ Robertson said, according to the federal complaint. “We’re done here! Don’t return without a warrant!’”

He later posted: “To my friends at the Federal Bureau of Idiots: I know you’re reading this and you have no idea how close your agents came to ‘bang.’” He claimed “the FBI tried to interfere with my free speech right in my driveway. My 45ACP was ready to smoke ’em!!!”

But that may have been bluster, implied Robinson, who said Robertson was a “big storyteller” who liked the attention of big stories.

“So a man that sits at home all day, doesn’t have much to do, if he’s on his phone and is involved in politics and has strong political opinions, I’m not surprised that he would make posts like that to try to receive attention,” Robinson told the Deseret News.

Craig Deleeuw Robertson, 75, was reportedly armed when federal agents arrived at his doorstep around 6:15 a.m. to serve both an arrest and search warrant of his home in Provo, south of Salt Lake City, just hours before Biden was to arrive in the state.

Robertson was facing counts of interstate threats, a threat against the president and influencing, impeding and retaliating against federal law enforcement officers by threat before he was killed.

The registered Republican and self-proclaimed “MAGA Trumper” wrote online Sunday that he heard Biden was coming to Utah so he was digging out his camouflage hunting suit and “cleaning the dust off the M24 sniper rifle.”

Robertson had a collection of firearms that he frequently showed off in photos posted to his social media profiles, where he described himself as an “Air Force Vietnam Era vet, retired welding inspector, gunsmith and woodworker. NRA Life Member, 2A advocate and owner of many AR rifles + many other rifles, shotguns, and handguns.”

“As Patrick Henry said, so shall I: ‘GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH.’,” the veteran added.

Robertson’s profile photo on Facebook was an image of him wearing a helmet, goggles and face cover as he pointed a gun with its green laser sight on. Another picture showed him holding up a large rifle while another featured all his guns lined up.

He had a collection of at least 20 guns, according to Travis Lee Clark, a community member who knew Robertson from working at their local church ward together — but added that that wasn’t out of the ordinary for the area.

y Joaquin Sapien (ProPublica) In July 2016, warships from more than two dozen nations gathered off the coasts of Hawaii and Southern California to join the United States in the world’s largest naval exercise. The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and others sent hundreds of destroyers, aircraft carriers and warplanes. They streamed in long lines across the ocean, symbols of power and prestige.

 

The USS Freedom had its own special place within the armada. It was one of a new class of vessels known as littoral combat ships. The U.S. Navy had billed them as technical marvels — small, fast and light, able to combat enemies at sea, hunt mines and sink submarines.

 

In reality, the LCS was well on the way to becoming one of the worst boondoggles in the military’s long history of buying overpriced and underperforming weapons systems. Two of the $500 million ships had suffered embarrassing breakdowns in previous months. The Freedom’s performance during the exercise, showing off its ability to destroy underwater mines, was meant to rejuvenate the ships’ record on the world stage. The ship was historically important too; it was the first LCS built, the first in the water, commissioned just eight years prior.

But like the LCS program’s reputation, the Freedom was in bad shape. Dozens of pieces of equipment on board were undergoing repairs. Training crews for the new class of ships had proven more difficult than anticipated. The sailors aboard the Freedom had not passed an exam demonstrating their ability to operate some of the ship’s most important systems.

 

As the day to launch approached, the pressure mounted. Top officers visited the ship repeatedly. The Freedom’s sailors understood that theirs was a “no fail mission” with “‘no appetite’ to remain in port,” according to Navy documents obtained by ProPublica.

 

The Freedom’s Capt. Michael Wohnhaas consulted with his officers. Despite crippling problems that had left one of the ship’s engines inoperable, he and his superiors decided the vessel could rely on its three others for the exercise.

In response to recent gun homicides our state has witnessed, New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham issued an executive order declaring gun violence a public health emergency. Another executive health order was declared in response to our illicit drugs crisis.

Most importantly, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of these precious lives. It pains me to see how quickly our focus shifts from love and support for a grieving family to divisive arguments. Please forgive us as we try to find solutions to these senseless tragedies while preserving our freedoms. We mean no disrespect. My thoughts and prayers are with your families. I also pray for the brave dedicated law enforcement officers who are tirelessly working to find the evil persons responsible. God be with you.

After the Governor’s press conference, I was asked for my views on the orders. (Beyond being your San Juan Co. Sheriff, I also serve as Chairman of the New Mexico Sheriffs’ Association and the New Mexico Sheriffs’ Affiliate). I gave the following response.

“The New Mexico Sheriffs' Association understands the struggle Albuquerque and Bernalillo County face regarding violent crime. Many rural New Mexico counties are impacted by big city crime spilling over into our communities. The NMSA does not support the Governor's temporary suspension of legal concealed carry and open carry firearms. This will directly impact law abiding citizens. Criminals do not possess concealed carry licenses, nor do they open carry firearms. This proposal is a violation of Article II of the New Mexico Constitution that states in the first sentence; No law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense. The Albuquerque area still faces a shortage of law enforcement officers and crime is rampant. We support the Governor's efforts in combating the State of New Mexico's illicit drug epidemic. We suggest the Governor's plan include strengthening our border security with Mexico where deadly fentanyl enters New Mexico and the United States. We cannot continue to ignore that fact regardless of one's political views.

Every person has a natural right to defend themselves. This right must remain solid during a time when law enforcement agencies are under-staffed and cannot be there to protect our citizens, when criminals have more rights than citizens, when criminals no longer fear justice, and judges aren’t given the authority to keep criminals off the street.

We all agree criminals shouldn’t have guns, but they do and they will. They’re criminals they don’t follow laws. Disarming the citizens will not stop criminals from possessing guns. Criminals need to be held accountable. They are not the victims.

Gun owners can do their part to keep guns away from criminals and others safe. Keep your guns secure. If you have little ones: always keep your gun next to you, lock them up and/or keep them unloaded, educate your children on gun safety. If you do not have children: lock your door when you leave your house, make sure guns aren’t visible from the outside, consider locking them up while you’re away. Please don’t leave them unattended in your vehicle. Take a firearms class: familiarize yourself with your gun, know the legal parameters on how & when to use it.

In the end we all want a safe and free New Mexico. May we never consider trading our freedoms for the lack of a criminal’s accountability. Both sides need to respectfully come to the fence in a united effort to find solutions. This is not a singular issue.

There are many issues that have got us to this point. Focusing on just one is not going to get us anywhere.

Joe and Jennifer Montana are among the people suing San Francisco, alleging city departments did nothing to prevent "torrents of water and untreated sewage" from flooding their homes.

 

The lawsuit, filed in the San Francisco County Superior Court on Aug. 24, was brought by dozens of families who live, rent or own property in the Marina District. The families allege that the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and Department of Public Works, as well as contractors they hired, knowingly allowed negligent conditions to develop in their neighborhood.

 

According to the lawsuit, the problem originates with San Francisco’s unusual sewer system, which is the only one in coastal California that “treats both wastewater and stormwater in the same network of pipes.” The plaintiffs allege that the city knew its aging system was “routinely” overwhelmed by “even modest winter storms.”

 

“Over the past decade, the City has continued to repair and improve its system ‘upstream’ of the Plaintiffs’ properties having the direct effect of channeling even greater and greater amounts of water and sewage into the areas surrounding Plaintiffs’ properties at a time when no significant ‘downstream’ improvements have been performed,” the suit claims.

 

This problem came to a head during winter storms over the past two years, the families say. The suit claims 4.5 million gallons of “untreated wastewater” flooded homes in Oct. 2021, and “torrents of water and untreated sewage” inundated their properties again in the storms of December 2022 and this past January.

 

"A mix of raw sewage and storm water flowed in and around Plaintiffs’ properties, permeating the soils, walls, and floors, and depositing highly contaminated and toxic fecal and other raw sewage matter in and around Plaintiffs’ homes,” the suit continues. “The City has failed to take any remedial steps to properly remove the contaminants from Plaintiffs’ properties and surrounding soils despite knowing that Plaintiffs, their families, their children and other citizens are being exposed to these contaminants on a continuing basis.”

 

This is not the only San Francisco property that’s allegedly caused headaches for the Montanas. In 2016, Joe Montana was among the residents informed that their unit in the Millennium Tower was sinking and tilting 16 inches.

 

The Marina District families are pursuing damages for negligence, dangerous exposure to raw sewage and mold, cleanup costs, property value loss and more. They are seeking a jury trial; a case management conference has been scheduled for Jan. 24, 2024.

I had noticed, way before this story, that when the "government" wants to do something to many of us that normally would cause resistance they choose a few soft but plausible targets in order to intimidate the rest of us.

 

Example: Many years ago the process of obtaining newborn blood samples was instituted "to check for genetic diseases". One mother, of many children (nine as I recall) objected to this as none in her family had genetic disease and she also believed that the "shedding of innocent blood" was wrong. Meaning that even though the heel stick would not kill her baby the "shedding" of his blood was still against her religion. So what did the "government" do? They sent police to her house and ripped the nursing infant from his mother, traumatizing the entire family. Why did they do this? I think it was to make sure no one else would bother to decline the heel stick.

Hawaiʻi Gov. “Chevron chartered a special flight this morning to Barrow Island to evacuate 50 blue and white collar contract crew off the Gorgon Project,” Offshore Alliance said in a Facebook post.

 

The two sides are at odds over issues including pay, job security, rosters and rules around overtime and transfers between Chevron facilities.

 

“We will continue to take steps to maintain safe and reliable operations in the event of disruption at our facilities,” a spokesperson for Chevron told Reuters.

 

Workers at Chevron’s LNG projects in Australia started strike action on Friday after talks broke down, potentially disrupting output from facilities that account for over 5% of global supply.

 

No further talks were scheduled between the unions and the U.S. energy major, according to the website of the Fair Work Commission, Australia’s industrial umpire, which had mediated five days of negotiations.

 

Australia is the world’s biggest LNG exporter and its main buyers are in Asia.

 

The dispute over wages and conditions at Chevron’s Gorgon and Wheatstone operations has supported British and European gas prices, as traders anticipate lower Australian supplies would intensify competition from other sources.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Known as the Zorro Ranch, a high-desert property once owned by disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein has been sold after two years on the market.

 

An attorney for Epstein’s estate, Daniel Weiner, confirmed Tuesday that the ranch had been sold for an undisclosed price, and the proceeds would be used to administer the estate and pay creditors. The property was listed in 2021 for $27.5 million. That price was later dropped to $18 million.

 

Weiner told Albuquerque television station KRQE that the estate would disclose the sales price in its next quarterly accounting that will be filed with the probate court in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

 

Records kept by the Santa Fe County assessor list the new owner as San Rafael Ranch LLC, which registered with the secretary of state’s office in late July, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported.

 

Epstein was found dead in August 2019 in his Manhattan jail cell, where he was awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Federal watchdogs have said negligence, misconduct and job failures had enabled him to take his own life.

In New Mexico, Epstein built a 26,700-square-foot mansion with a sprawling courtyard and a living room roughly the size of the average American home. Nearby was a private airstrip with a hangar and helipad. The property also included a ranch office, a firehouse and a seven-bay heated garage.

 

Epstein purchased the Zorro Ranch in 1993 from former Democratic Gov. Bruce King.

 

While Epstein never faced charges in New Mexico, the state attorney general's office in 2019 confirmed that it was investigating and had interviewed possible victims who visited the ranch south of Santa Fe.
