How was veteran Yaroslav Hunka's military unit linked to the Nazis?

During the height of the Second World War, Nazi Germany formed a division of Ukrainian volunteers to fight against the Soviet Union.

Known as the First Ukrainian Division – and also referred to as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division and the SS 14th Waffen Division – the military formation has been linked to atrocities and violence in Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia and the former Yugoslavia.

"Members of this division were involved in mass murder of Jews, Poles and Ukrainians during (the Second World War), and many of them did this before they joined this division," University of Ottawa political science professor Ivan Katchanovski told CTVNews.ca. "They're considered to be Nazi collaborators, and they are not regarded even as heroes in Ukraine by the Ukrainian government."

Nearly 80 years after being disbanded in 1945, the Nazi-led division is fuelling new outrage after 98-year-old former member Yaroslav Hunka was honoured with a two standing ovations in Canada's House of Commons on Friday during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Ottawa.

Now a Canadian citizen and North Bay, Ont. resident, Hunka was invited by local MP and former House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota, who resigned from his prestigious post on Tuesday amid the controversy.

The military division was initially formed by the Nazis in 1943 with volunteers from Western Ukraine's Galicia region, with Ukrainian nationalists ostensibly joining to help liberate their country from Soviet occupation.

Katchanovski, who researches conflicts in Ukraine, says evidence links the Nazi-led "puppet unit" to approximately a thousand civilian deaths in Poland and Ukraine.

"They massacred entire villages of Polish residents in this region… including women and children because they were accused of being associated with Soviet partisans," Katchanovski said. "This was just mass murder without any real justification."

While it has been confirmed that Hunka was part of this unit, it was not immediately known what role he played in its operations, and some say allegations of war crimes could not be confirmed.

The division was under the direction of Nazi Germany's infamous SS paramilitary group, which was declared a criminal organization by the post-war International Military Tribunal in Nuremburg.

"In addition to this, the SS Galicia Division was involved in other cases of violence," Katchanovski added. "They took part in the suppression of the anti-Nazi uprising in Slovakia, and they also took part in the brutal and violent suppression of the anti-Nazi partisan movement in Yugoslavia."

It was renamed the First Ukrainian Division of the Ukrainian National Army in March 1945 before surrendering to British forces two months later, in May 1945.

More than 8,000 fighters moved to the U.K. in 1947. Because they fought against communist Russia, about 600 were permitted to relocate to Canada during the Cold War, following a 1950 federal cabinet decision.

"These Ukrainians should be subject to special security screening, but should not be rejected on the grounds of their service in the German army," the Canadian government decided at the time.

In 1985 the issue resurfaced, leading then-prime minister Brian Mulroney to order an investigation to determine whether Canada had become a haven for Nazi war criminals.

"Charges of war crimes against members of the Galicia Division have never been substantiated," the final 1986 report from the Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals stated. "Further, in the absence of evidence of participation in or knowledge of specific war crimes, mere membership in the Galicia Division is insufficient to justify prosecution."

Many Jewish groups have disagreed with that assessment.

According to the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, the Ukrainian division "was responsible for the mass murder of innocent civilians with a level of brutality and malice that is unimaginable." B'nai Brith Canada CEO Michael Mostyn said the division's volunteers included "ultra-nationalist ideologues" who "dreamed of an ethnically homogenous Ukrainian state and endorsed the idea of ethnic cleansing."

Monuments in Canada that honour the division have been targeted with vandalism, including a 2020 incident in Oakville, Ont., and a 2021 case in Edmonton where a statue was spray-painted with the words "actual Nazi."

Josh Green: “It was a 17-minute hurricane fire”

FALSE. It burned all day long. From 9am past midnight.

It was due to climate change.

FALSE: The county is suing because proper burn mgmt wasn’t done.

It was a normal fire.

FALSE: Plumeria is blooming right next to gutted cars.

It was 100% contained earlier.

FALSE: It was not; it re-ignited later in the day.

Sirens weren’t activated bc they are only for tsunamis.

FALSE: They are for any kind of emergency – co website.

Mayor appeared around 6:30 pm saying everything was fine.

FALSE: Half of Lahaina had already burned

Cars were blocked from leaving due to downed power lines.

FALSE: There are no power since 4:30pm that evening.

There was no cell phone service to send text warnings during the fire.

FALSE: Cell phones could still receive text messages. Why were no warnings sent out?

After the fire, govt help was not available due to no comms.

FALSE: Starlinks were available after the fire. Citizens were blocked from coming into the fire.

Cell phones didn’t work after the fire because there were no cell phone towers.

FALSE: There were temp cell towers put in place.

Water was turned off for “water rights” reasons.

FALSE: There was no water available to do laundry, take a shower or fight the fire. Even the well water source, the diesel.

 

OTHER INCONVENIENT FACTS:

  • Temp flight restrictions were put in place (no drones over Lahaina).

  • Media were kept out of Lahaina.

  • You could not (and cannot) pull over on the hwy to take a picture of Lahaina.

  • There were no door to door evacuations as in the past.-

  • Owners were not given access to their properties after the fire.

  • The US President WAS given access.

  • There was no accurate accounting given for the missing persons, including children.

FEMA said “do not call parents” (bc callers “were not qualified”). No effort was made to come up with a method to figure it out.

  • Cars were completely melted; how could this happen from a grass fire? (Fire experts said not possible)

  • Blue and red objects did not seem to burn very readily.

  • He got labeled as a conspiracy theorist for merely asking q’s and showing images of melted cars.

  • Many infringements of constitutional rights: nobody is taking responsibility for this.

  • Boats out in the water burned.

  • Coast Guard said they found bodies that had burned in the water. That’s being hushed up.

  • Video of trees burning from the INSIDE. Flames coming from outside of holes in the bark.

  • There’s no asphalt scarring around melted cars (asphalt has a relatively low melting point)

  • Police chief and deputy both came from Las Vegas. Many strange things here.

  • Green came out with an emergency proclamation for HOUSING in July – suspends all kinds of usual rights.

  • FEMA workers were staying at top dollar resort hotels an HOUR away from Lahaina.

 

  • WHY did Gov. Green talked at the UN in July about how sub-national gov’t “proactively prepare” for disasters like the fire IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE “SUSTAINABILITY” GOALS?

Instagram and OnlyFans are fueling an exploding illegal child trafficking industry online, Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) wrote Tuesday to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in a letter obtained exclusively by Breitbart News.

 

“Instagram and OnlyFans.com are blatantly facilitating the purchase of child sexual abuse material (CSAM),” said Rep. Nehls. “This is completely unacceptable.”

 

Nehls’ letter alerts FTC Chair Lina Khan to the “unlawful activities” on the two platforms, asking for immediate investigation.

 

“Children should not be victims of crimes for the financial gain of social media companies. This is why I am calling on the FTC to immediately investigate both Instagram and OnlyFans.com and establish effective guardrails for credit card companies, such as Mastercard and Visa, who allow the purchase of content displaying the sexual abuse of children.

 

“We must do everything possible to protect our most vulnerable from this horrific Epstein Island-like industry and pursue their traffickers to the fullest extent.”

 

Each platform creates its own set of problems for law enforcement. The Congressman points to a study led by the Wall Street Journal concluding that “Instagram’s features, such as its hashtag system, algorithms, and search options, are facilitating the process of locating and purchasing child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

 

“Regrettably, even users who inadvertently encounter such material, and rightfully report it to the platform, are often suggested similar content by the platform’s algorithms.”

 

Nehls cites a National Center for Missing and Exploited Children report that 5 million of its 31.9 million reports of child pornography originated from Instagram in 2022.

 

OnlyFans.com’s subscription-based business model “has transformed the pornography industry,” writes Nehls. “The paywall enables traffickers, rapists, and other criminal elements to better evade detection.”

 

The paywall utilized by OnlyFans creates additional challenges for law enforcement, said Tim Palmbach, Executive Director of the Center for Investigations in Trafficking in Persons. “It is important for Congress to continue to call attention to these critical issues and encourage federal agencies to investigate and give law enforcement the tools needed to pursue these very complex cases.”

 

Credit card operators facilitate the ability of OnlyFans subscribers to “tip” in real time for requested content, often illegal, according to Nehls, whose letter argues this activity by credit card companies gives the FTC the regulatory authority to investigate them as well.

 

The founder and CEO of the Anti-Human Trafficking Intelligence Initiative, Aaron Kehler, applauded Nehls for “his leadership in bringing attention to potential child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and child sexual exploitation (CSE) occurring on various online platforms to federal agencies with jurisdication to take a stance on protecting our most vulnerable.”

 

Nehls asks for immediate action from FTC given the “gravity” of the concerns. “Consideration must be given to appropriate regulatory or legislative remedies that can harmonize user privacy, platform business models, and the necessity for robust law enforcement mechanisms to stem the tide of horrific online child abuse and other illegal material.”

Biden impeachment hearing to begin this week, GOP announces first witnesses

The House Overusing Committee is holding the first impeachment hearing into President Joe Biden this Thursday and has announced the first three interview witnesses. The impeachment process will assess whether then Vice President Joe Biden received a bribe from a Ukrainian businessman to change the outcome of U.S. policy.

 

The committee announced three witnesses, including George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley, former Assistant Attorney General, United States Department of Justice Tax Division Eileen O’Connor, and forensic accountant Bruce Dubinsky.

 

“Since January, House Committees on Oversight and Accountability, Judiciary, and Ways and Means have uncovered an overwhelming amount of evidence showing President Joe Biden abused his public office for his family’s financial gain,” said Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) who also made the following lengthy statements:

 

“Thousands of pages of financial records, emails, texts, testimony from credible IRS whistleblowers, and a transcribed interview with Biden family business associate Devon Archer all reveal that Joe Biden allowed his family to sell him as ‘the brand’ around the world to enrich the Biden family. Joe Biden showed up on at least two dozen occasions to send signals of access, influence, and power to those who were paying the Bidens.”

Senate Democrats and Republicans reach DEAL on short-term plan to keep government funded with $6.2B aid to Ukraine - House Republicans STILL divided with five days until shutdown deadline

 

While the House remains divided among itself, the Senate has reached a deal on a bill that would kick the deadline for a government shutdown down the road by six weeks.

 

The continuing resolution (CR), endorsed by both Senate leaders Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., would extend government funding from September 30 to November 17.

 

It includes over $6 billion in Ukraine aid, sure to trigger some House conservatives. It also includes $6 billion in disaster relief and no border provisions.

 

It's unlikely the deal could pass before Sunday if Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., holds up 'quick passage' - which requires unanimous consent. He claimed Tuesday he would continue to do so.

 

'I will object to any kind of easy passage or speeding up of the time. I think it's bad policy to borrow money from China to send it to Ukraine.'

 

The CR, endorsed by both Senate leaders Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., would extend government funding from September 30 to November 17. It includes over $6 billion in Ukraine aid

 

Meanwhile Speaker Kevin McCarthy remained non-committal on whether he'd ever give a Senate-authored CR a vote on the House floor. He's also called for Ukraine aid to be dealt with separately from stopgap spending legislation.

 

On Tuesday he did say he would put a stopgap funding bill on the floor before Saturday but said he would continue pushing for one that included border security.

 

The Senate CR would likely pass both the upper chamber and the lower chamber with votes from Democrats and some Republicans if House GOP leadership put it up for a vote. But doing so could endanger McCarthy's speakership.

Example, I went to Home Depot around 3 on the 10th of this month, to get a price match which they have done in the past with Walmart and Amazon prices. As I waited for a mgr because now cashier claims Amazon is not a retailer, as I waited for a mgr at customer service, the first cashier to the door yells forcefully at me and points "I need you to move there, all the way over these outside of customer service" as to make a scene like I was stealing something. Then when mgr price checks her computer at full volume states "You have went to a website that is trying to steal your identity, your account has been locked for security measure, wait there until network administrators get there, the authorities have been notified and are on their way" while she checked Walmarts site which overrode her Amazon fiasco by $2 less. After about 4 minutes she walks away and the only word I heard was "Dilemma" I asked her to stop and repeat what she said, and she did it again. The 3rd time she said "go see the cashier he is going to solve your dilemma and give it to you for $110" which is double the price match. Home depot has been price gouging ever since covid and only hired libtards. In the 2022 midterm cycle, Menendez’s campaign committee and leadership PAC expenditures totaled about $1.5 million. He spent about 16 percent of the money ($229,900) on contributions, OpenSecrets reported. Much of that money Menendez gave to Democrat Senate allies, some of whom plan to return it in one-hundred-dollar bills — a denomination Menendez allegedly stashed in his home totaling $500,000.

 

“We are in process of returning the money in envelopes stuffed with $100 bills,” Joe Calvello, a spokesperson for Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), told the Messenger. Menendez gave Fetterman $5,000 towards his Senate campaign.

Menendez is already in gear for the 2024 election cycle. According to campaign finance disclosures, Menendez’s New Millennium PAC gave Senate Democrats large donations, including Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) $5,000, Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) $10,000, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) $10,000, and Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) $5,000.

 

In addition to the individual campaigns, Menendez’s PAC gave money to Democrat organizations that donate to Democrat candidates. He gave 113 donations to ActBlue in the 2022 cycle, totaling $107,548, OpenSecrets reported. He also gave Fireside Campaigns 24 donations totaling $107,005.

 

While a few Democrat senators signaled they will return their donations from the embattled senator, some Democrats, many of whom accepted campaign cash, called on Tuesday for Menendez to step down.

 

“I’ve read the detailed charges against Senator Menendez and find them deeply disturbing. While he deserves a fair trial like every other American, I believe Senator Menendez should resign for the sake of the public’s faith in the U.S. Senate,” said Tester, who received campaign funds.

 

“The indictment spells out deeply troubling allegations against Senator Menendez that breach the American people’s trust and compromise his ability to effectively represent his constituents,” Baldwin, who also took Menendez’s campaign money, told reporters.

California. Gov. Gavin Newsom Signs Package of Pro-LGBTQ Bills

 

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed a package of pro-LGBTQ legislation on Saturday, one day after vetoing a transgender custody bill.

 

Newsom said he was “committed to the ongoing work to create safer, more inclusive spaces for all Californians,” according to a report by the Sacramento Bee.

 

“These measures will help protect vulnerable youth, promote acceptance, and create more supportive environments in our schools and communities,” Newsom said.

 

The measures the governor signed include:

 

Assembly Bill 5, which sets deadlines for school employees to undergo LGBTQ-related training

Assembly Bill 223, which makes minors’ court petitions to change their sex confidential

Senate Bill 760, which requires public schools to have at least one sex-neutral restroom

Senate Bill 857, which requires the state to assemble a task force to identify the needs of LGBTQ students and implement policies

 

Additionally, on Monday, Newsom signed a bill into law forbidding schools from prohibiting books on LGBTQ+ topics. This means that California is set to fine schools that defy the legislation.

 

Newsom’s move to sign these pro-LGBTQ bills comes after the governor vetoed a bill that would have directed judges to consider a parent’s acceptance — or lack thereof — for their child’s sex transition in custody battles between divorcing parents.

 

The governor explained his decision, suggesting his veto did not mean anything because California courts can already consider a parent’s support for a child’s sex transition, implying he was concerned about conservatives’ reactions in other states.

 

“I urge caution when the Executive and Legislative branches of state government attempt to dictate — in prescriptive terms that single out one characteristic — legal standards for the Judicial branch to apply,” he said. “Other-minded elected officials, in California and other states, could very well use this strategy to diminish the civil rights of vulnerable communities.”

 

“Moreover, a court, under existing law, is required to consider a child’s health, safety, and welfare when determining the best interests of a child in these proceedings, including the parent’s affirmation of the child’s gender identity,” Newsom added.

We put several UFO-themed questions to 1,000 voters following a series of unprecedented Congressional hearings and a NASA investigation into unidentified craft flying in our skies.

 

More than four in 10 respondents said they would feel safer if Donald Trump were President of the US if aliens were to invade Earth, while a third said they would feel safer under Joe Biden. The rest were unsure.

 

J.L Partners conducted the poll from September 15 through 20, asking questions to Americans by phone, text and in its dedicated app.

 

Participants ranged in age from 18 to over 65. Scarlett Maguire, Director at JLP, said: 'Biden's approval rating isn't the only thing that has fallen to Earth recently.

 

'Only four in 10 Americans believe recent reports of UFOs are human in origin, and just one in four rule out extra-terrestrials having visited in the last 50 years.

 

'And, perhaps unsurprisingly, for a demographic that embraces astrology, 18-29-year-old women are one of the groups most likely to think we have already had a close encounter of the third kind.'

 

'As with crime and the economy, the public's trust in the Biden administration's handling of UFOs doesn't survive first contact.

 

'Even Democrats don't believe they have been told everything about UFOs. And when Mars attacks, there is only one man in town to save the day: more Americans - including independents - would choose Trump over Biden to defend them.'

 

When asked about the recent strange sightings by US Navy pilots, a total of 27 percent said they were 'probably alien in origin.'

 

A 41 percent majority said the strange flying objects were of human origin, and 32 percent said they did not know.

 

However, males, Black voters, non-graduates and Republicans were among the highest groups to believe the sightings were extraterrestrial in origin.

 

The poll revealed that more Americans than not believe the Biden Administration is withholding information about UFOs.

 

More than 66 percent of Republicans answered 'definitely', compared to just 22 percent of Democrats.

 

DailyMail.com also asked respondents if aliens attacked Earth, who do they think we would be safer under, Joe Biden or Donald Trump.

 

Forty-three percent voted for Trump, 32 percent said Biden and 25 percent gave 'don't know' as their answer.

 

Every age, race, education level and political party chose Trump.

 

Trump appeared on the 'Hugh Hewitt' podcast this month, where he said he was briefed on UFOs during his presidency.

 

The former president explained how he spoke with 'a couple of people from the Air Force' who experienced strange objects in the sky.

 

When asked if he believes in them, Trump responded: 'I have, I always have an open mind.'

 

Biden has steered clear of the topic in interviews.

 

In 2021, the president was asked about Barak Obama's statements that there is footage and records of objects in the sky — these unidentified aerial phenomena - but said he does not know what they are.

 

Biden responded: 'I would ask him again.'

Tesla battery on fire at Bouldercombe energy storage site, Genex confirms

 

A Tesla battery continues to burn at one of Queensland’s first large-scale battery storage sites after it caught fire last night.

Several firefighting crews were called and the fire was contained to a single battery earlier this morning.

 

Gracemere resident Dave Bailey witnessed the fire and said he could see huge, multi-coloured flames.

US court finds Donald Trump guilty of fraud – Reuters

The former US president has been found to have unlawfully inflated the value of his properties and businesses

 

A New York State civil court has found former US president Donald Trump and his family business liable for illegally inflating his net worth, Justice Arthur Engoron revealed on Tuesday.

 

State Attorney General Letitia James had sued Trump and the Trump Organization last September, claiming he had lied for a decade about his net worth. The judge found that the reality TV star had inflated the value of his assets by between $2.23 and $3.6 billion in order to secure favorable terms on bank loans, insurance, and other financial resources.

 

Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, his Trump Tower penthouse, multiple golf courses and office buildings were among the assets whose value he inflated, the ruling has found. Justice Engoron backed James’ accusation that the value of several properties had been exaggerated and dismissed the Republican presidential hopeful’s defense as “wholly without basis in law or fact.”

 

A trial to resolve the multiple claims in the suit is scheduled to begin on Monday.

 

In addition to the civil suit, Trump is facing dozens of criminal charges stemming from his alleged involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot, his alleged payment of hush money to a porn star nearly a decade ago, and his alleged hoarding of top-secret government documents after leaving the White House. He has dismissed the growing thicket of cases against him as a political witch hunt and used the federal indictments - the first ever to be leveled against a former US head of state - to raise money for his 2024 presidential campaign.

 

James claimed in her $250 million lawsuit that the entire family was guilty of “staggering fraud” and is seeking to prohibit the Trumps and their company from doing any business in New York at all. Aside from Trump, defendants in the suit include three of his adult children and two Trump Organization executives, Allan Weisselberg and Jeff McConney.

 

The former president has denied wrongdoing in the case, pointing out that “not only was no bank harmed” by his optimistic valuations of his own possessions, but “they profited handsomely to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars in interest and fees- and never once took any issue with any of the loans in question.”

The former president took a hardline position on Russia’s relations with the West amid the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev. In September, he suggested suspending diplomatic relations with the EU after the bloc backed banning Russian nationals from bringing personal cars and smartphones onto its territory, citing potential sanctions violation.

Although Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan accused Russian peacekeepers of failing to prevent the Azerbaijani attack, he had already recognized the territory as Azerbaijani, and sought to distance himself from his traditional allies in Moscow and ingratiate himself with the US by holding military exercises with American forces and sending aid money to Ukraine.

What is USAID doing?

Power and US State Department Acting Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasian Affairs Yuri Kim visited Yerevan on Monday. According to a press release from the State Department, the visit was intended “to affirm US support for Armenia’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and democracy and to help address humanitarian needs stemming from the recent violence in Nagorno-Karabakh.”

 

Last year,USAID spent $33.7 million on Armenia, according to the agency’s website. Almost half of this amount was directed to government and civil society projects. The agency stated that it intends to speed up the country’s “strategic transition to a more inclusive, democratic, and economically resilient society.”

 

USAID is Washington’s primary distributor of civilian foreign aid. With ayearly budget approaching $30 billion, the agency is active in over 100 countries. While some of its missions involve the straightforward provision of food or medicine to developing countries, it has been accused of financing hazardous biological research, and in the words of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr,is a “CIA cutout.”

 

USAID is currently seeking contractors for tourism, disaster response, and PR projects in Armenia. However, other US government agencies have already spent millions of dollars rebuilding the Armenian government and civic society in the image of the US.

American influence

According to the US government’s contracting website, the State Department currently plans to hire a legal consultant to rewrite Armenian labor laws, spend $1.5 million on anti-corruption initiatives, and purchase a firearms training simulator for Armenian police, which Pashinyan has vowed to use in a “tough response” against protesters.

 

The State Department has already paid a think tank funded by USAID, the EU, and the UK almost $30,000 to “debunk manipulations and smear campaigns in Armenia,” in addition to funding anti-”propaganda” training for Armenian journalists. Another $70,000 has been spent promoting American state media on Armenian television, while $25,000 has been allocated for “LGBT support” programs.

 

Additionally, thePentagon is currently seeking to build a “biological threat reduction” facilityin Armenia. While the description of this facility provided by the Pentagon is vague, Russia has accused the US of using similar laboratories in Ukraine to research and manufacture biological weapons.

Russia’s response

Armenia is a former Soviet republic and a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a Russia-led defense bloc roughly analogous to NATO. The Russian Foreign Ministry warned on Monday that Pashinyan is “making a huge mistake” by turning to the West, arguing that while Russia and Armenia have “largely common interests in the fields of security and development,” theUS is only taking interest in Armenia to “inflict strategic damage to Russia” and “destabilize the Eurasian region.”

Biden team initiates ‘don’t trip strategy’ – Axios

The US president’s re-election staff are scrambling to cover up for his physical frailties

 

US President Joe Biden’sstaff are urgently working to keep him from falling overduring his 2024 re-election bid, Axios reported on Tuesday.

 

Since tripping on a sandbag and falling in full view of the audience during an Air Force Academy ceremony in June, an incident widely shared and mocked on social media, Biden, who is 80 years old,has been wearing tennis shoes more oftenand using the “short stairs” to ascend the steps of Air Force One, in order to avoid another public stumble, the outlet claimed.

 

White House spokesman Andrew Batesinsisted the don’t-trip program had been “proactively and transparently disclosed” in health summaries released by Biden’s doctor during the first two years of his presidency, and accused Axios of neglecting Biden’s “very real achievements for hardworking Americans” in favor of a sensationalized story about the aging head of state.

 

Biden’s staff have reportedly weighed the possibility of his being mocked for using the short steps on the tarmac against the much more pressing threat of voters (and potentially even the Democratic Party) abandoning him because of his age, and decided a few concessions are preferable to further public embarrassment.

 

The US president has been working with a physical therapist to improve his balance. His doctor had recommended balancing exercises, described as “general flexibility and proprioceptive maintenance maneuvers,” and observed the president was suffering from arthritis anddecreased sensation in his feetas well as spondylosis of the spine, causing difficulties with movement.

 

A poll conducted last month by the Associated Press and NORC suggested that three-quarters of Americans believe Biden is too old to be president. Only about half of those polled saw former president and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump, who at 77 is only three years younger than his rival, as too old for the job.

 

Seemingly aware of the closeness in their ages, Trump has said that while Biden is “grossly incompetent,” he is not too old to be president, instead focusing on theincumbent’s lack of “mental acuity”and the negative outcomes of his term in office.

 

While Biden himself has said his own age “does not register” with him and has insisted voters should judge him by his energy level, a CBS poll released earlier this month suggested that only 34% of registered US voters believe he would actually complete a second term if re-elected. Just over a quarter - 26% - believe Biden has the mental and physical health to continue serving.

Special counsel Jack Smith has added a veteran war crimes prosecutor — who served as Smith’s deputy during his stint at the Hague — to his team as it prepares to put former President Donald Trump on trial in Washington and Florida.

Alex Whiting worked alongside Smith for three years, helping prosecute crimes against humanity that occurred in Kosovo in the late 1990s. The Yale-educated attorney also worked as a prosecutor with the International Criminal Court from 2010 to 2013. He has taught law classes at Harvard since 2007 as well, hired as an assistant professor by then-Dean Elena Kagan — now a Supreme Court justice — and rising to a visiting professorship in 2013.

Whiting’s precise role on Smith’s team is unclear. A spokesperson for Smith declined to comment, and Whiting did not immediately return requests for comment. The prosecutors’ office in the Hague and Harvard University also did not respond to requests for comment about Whiting’s current employment status.

But a POLITICO reporter observed Whiting at the U.S. district courthouse in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday and Thursday, spending several hours monitoring the trial of a Jan. 6 defendant. The judge in the case is Tanya Chutkan, who is slated to preside over Trump’s trial in March on federal charges stemming from his efforts to subvert the 2020 election.

During a break in the Jan. 6 trial this week, Whiting introduced himself to prosecutors as a new member of Smith’s team, saying he “just joined” the office.

From 2018 to 2022, Smith served as chief prosecutor in the Kosovo Specialist Chamber in the Hague. Whiting temporarily took over that office last year after Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith as special counsel to lead the Trump investigations. Boston attorney Kim West was appointed to permanently succeed Smith in June but did not assume the role immediately.

Whiting has been a frequent commentator on the previous special counsel to investigate Trump: Robert Mueller, who investigated links between Russia and Trump’s 2016 campaign. Whiting wrote numerous articles and gave interviews assessing the strength of Mueller’s case against Trump, often siding with those who saw extreme legal peril for Trump over his efforts to curb the investigation. Though he was once active on Twitter, his account appears to have been deleted and a Wayback Machine search suggests it was dormant since mid-2022.

Whiting’s addition to the team shows Smith is gearing up for a new phase of his efforts — preparing for trials that could send a former president to prison for the first time in U.S. history.

The hire is also another example of Smith turning to allies he has worked closely with at different phases of his career. His top deputies, David Harbach and Raymond Hulser, worked closely with Smith during his Obama-era stint at the Justice Department, where Smith headed the Public Integrity Section.

Harbach, too, was recently spotted observing a potential adversary in the Washington, D.C., federal courthouse. He attended portions of jury selection for former Trump adviser Peter Navarro, who is represented by attorney Stanley Woodward. Woodward also happens to represent Walt Nauta, Trump’s co-defendant in Smith’s other criminal case against the former president, related to his stash of highly sensitive national security documents at his Florida estate.

It’s unclear whether Whiting’s attendance at Chutkan’s trial was on his own initiative or if he was observing on assignment from the special counsel’s office.

In addition to his war crimes work — which also included a five-year stint as a trial lawyer for three war crimes prosecutions stemming from the war in Kosovo — he also spent seven years prosecuting organized crime in Boston for the Justice Department from 1995 to 2002.

Former Qantas boss Alan Joyce will miss the Senate aviation inquiry into landing rights, after heading overseas.

Senator Bridget McKenzie, chair of the committee examining the federal government decision to knock back extra flights from Qatar Airways, confirmed the ex Qantas CEO''s absence.

Joyce was unable to appear before the committee today in person or by video link to explain his role in the move not to allow Qatar Airways to expand its operations in Australia, she said.

 

The decision seemingly gave Qantas a competitive market advantage.

According to Joyce's lawyers, his no-show was due to "personal obligations".

New Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson and chairman Richard Goyder are set to front the inquiry today.

The federal government's decision to block Qatar Airways adding more flights into the country triggered a storm of protests from opposition politicians, airlines, airports and the travel industry.

Transport Minister Catherine King insisted there was nothing extraordinary about the decision to veto Qatar's expansion plans.

 

McKenzie said the Senate committee will summon Joyce when he returns to Australia to appear before it.

But it is unclear whether will make it back here in time for when the inquiry releases its terms of reference.

Alex Whiting has joined the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office (SPO) as Head of Investigations.

 

Mr Whiting, 54, is a prosecutor of French and US nationality with extensive experience of both domestic and international prosecutions, including stints at both the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), as well as a distinguished academic career.

 

Mr Whiting came to the SPO from Harvard Law School, where he had been a professor of practice since 2013.

 

Between 2010 and 2013, Mr Whiting was in the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICC where he served first as Investigations Coordinator, overseeing all investigations, and then as Prosecutions Coordinator, overseeing all prosecutions.

 

Before joining the ICC, Mr Whiting taught for three years as an assistant clinical professor of law at Harvard Law School.

 

Between 2002 and 2007, Mr Whiting worked for the ICTY, where he was lead prosecutor in the trial of Fatmir Limaj, Isak Musliu, and Haradin Bala, and lead prosecutor in the trials of Milan Martić and Dragomir Milošević.

 

Before joining the ICTY, Mr Whiting was a US federal prosecutor, first with the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division in Washington, DC, and then with the US Attorney’s Office in Boston, Massachusetts, where he focused on organised crime and corruption cases.

 

Mr Whiting is a graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School.

I am afraid you are right to a greater extent. I have done exactly that once before, analyzing some of the code before building upon it, and came to the conclusion that is not the best way to secure but to write your own code that interrogates every request and send it through a pipeline of middleware that finalizes the last call as my filtered adornments calling the original function with it's args. Nothing is truly secure unless you re-invent the wheel. That is why I do not use something like React-Create-App because even though it sets up a project easily it also puts thousands of files into your project of who knows what. I keep everything bare-bones as possible.
