David Weiss Drops One Gun Charge Count Against Hunter Biden

Special Counsel David Weiss dropped one of the gun charges count against Hunter Biden on Wednesday.

The move is apparently a procedural step, according to the Associated Press:

The procedural step removes a charge alleging he broke a law against drug users having guns when he bought a gun in 2018, during a period he has acknowledged struggling with addiction.

The president’s son is now facing a three-count indictment focused on the same purchase that includes both gun possession and false statement charges. No new tax counts have yet been filed by special counsel David Weiss, who is overseeing the case.

Hunter Biden had been expected to avoid prosecution on the gun charge and plead guilty to misdemeanor tax counts in an agreement with prosecutors. But the deal collapsed after a judge raised questions about it in a July hearing and the new indictment was filed weeks later.

Hunter Biden’s lawyers wrote in an August court filing that Weiss’s decision to “renege on the previously agreed-upon plea agreement” is still in effect and binding. The diversion agreement allowed Hunter Biden to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax violations while essentially wiping a felony gun violation from his record.

Top British University’s Arab and Islamic Studies School Offers Degree in ‘Magic and Occult Science’

The Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter promises “decolonisation… feminism, and anti-racism” in its new Master’s Degree in Magic and Occult Science, the first of its kind in the UK.

The University of Exeter, part of the Russel Group of leading British universities, has launched a Master of Arts in Magic and Occult Science, a development perhaps reflecting the rise of interest in the occult in the increasingly post-Christian West.

Delivered through the University’s Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, which by Exeter’s own reckoning is “one of Europe’s most renowned centres for research and teaching in the Arab and Muslim world”, the one or two-year course at a cost of £12,000, or £24,300 ($29,750) to international applicants gives students the opportunity to “Build interdisciplinary expertise whilst exploring your specific interests within the long and diverse history of esotericism, witchcraft, ritual magic, occult science, and related topics.”

An online prospectus advertising the course illustrates key benefits including an invitation for students to join monthly meetings of the “prestigious Centre for Magic and Esotericism” and the chance to study the course’s core course, “Esotericism and the Magical Tradition”.

Taking in a long run of magic in history, the course explores “magic in Greece and Rome, occult texts in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the history of witchcraft, magic in literature and folklore, deception and illusion, and the history of science and medicine”

The course is not, apparently, also without a crusading, cultural element. Ukraine’s controversial transgender spokesperson Sarah Ashton-Cirillo has claimed to have been reinstated in the role representing the Territorial Defence Forces (TDF) after being suspended last month.

“I continue in the role of TDF spokesperson. Truth, trust, and humanity will always prevail over accusations, allegations, and artificial intelligence,” Ashton-Cirillo said on Tuesday.

The American citizen, born as Michael John Cirillo before ‘transitioning’, went on to claim to have signed two book contracts with Potomac Books publishing, with the first volume set to be released in the summer of next year.

What is USAID Doing in Georgia?

US bilateral relations with Georgia (the country, not to be confused with the American state) seem a bit tarnished, and it’s USAID’s activities in Georgia that are to blame.

The Georgian State Security Service (GSSS) has accused the agency of funding an NGO that trained Georgian youth to organize unrest, the start of which was planned for October-December this year. The US Embassy in Tbilisi stated that the allegations were false. But Georgian authorities were not satisfied with this answer, describing the US response as “astonishing and insulting.”

So, is the US spending money in the Caucasus country, and if so, for what purposes? Sputnik investigates.

What Happened?

On Monday, the GSSS made a statement that three Serbian citizens from the Center for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies (CANVAS), funded by USAID, went to Tbilisi to teach youth and local NGO leaders to organize unrest.

According to the Georgian security service, from September 26 to 29, representatives of several local NGOs and civil activists underwent training in a hotel in Tbilisi. These individuals were trained to act, in particular, against the government, the State Security Service, and other agencies. They were also taught the technique of creating pickets and artificial traffic jams.

The same day, Georgian Parliamentary Speaker Shalva Papuashvili asked USAID for clarifications regarding funding in organizing a coup, and cited the incident as “a dark day in the history of American aid to Georgia.”

In response, the US Embassy in Tbilisi said all the allegations were false and that USAID would continue to support “Georgian organizations who support people to secure the future they determine.”

“Allegations made publicly today against one of our assistance projects are false and fundamentally mischaracterize the goals of our assistance to Georgia. USAID has been supporting the Georgian people since 1992. As always, our assistance is transparent, and we welcome any opportunities to discuss any concerns the government may have,” the official statement said.

The flights rattled Armenian officials in Yerevan, long wary of the strategic alliance between Israel and Azerbaijan, and shined a light on Israel’s national interests in the restive region south of the Caucasus Mountains.

“For us, it is a major concern that Israeli weapons have been firing at our people,” Arman Akopian, Armenia’s ambassador to Israel, told The Associated Press. In a flurry of diplomatic exchanges, Akopian said he expressed alarm to Israeli politicians and lawmakers in recent weeks over Israeli weapons shipments.

“I don’t see why Israel should not be in the position to express at least some concern about the fate of people being expelled from their homeland,” he told AP.

Azerbaijan’s September blitz involving heavy artillery, rocket launchers and drones — largely supplied by Israel and Turkey, according to experts — forced Armenian separatist authorities to lay down their weapons and sit down for talks on the future of the separatist region.

The Azerbaijani offensive killed over 200 Armenians in the enclave, the vast majority of them fighters, and some 200 Azerbaijani troops, according to officials.

County supervisor Holly Mitchell, however, contends that the new bail system does not mean criminals are escaping consequences.

"It's really dangerous for us to conflate bail with accountability," Mitchell said, adding, "Bail means I have the resources to pay my way out of jail."

The new system was enacted following criticism that cash bail favored the rich since wealthy people arrested for more serious crimes could afford to pay for their release from custody while low-income people accused of lesser offenses were forced to remain behind bars.

A judge could change or revoke the defendant's release conditions after they are charged and appear in court for arraignment.

On Friday, 12 Southland cities filed court papers in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking an injunction blocking the zero-bail system from taking effect over concerns it will harm public safety.

The county implemented a zero-bail system during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent overcrowding in jails, but the policy was lifted a year ago. In May, a Los Angeles judge issued a preliminary injunction ordering an end to cash bail by the Los Angeles police and sheriff's departments.

The Los Angeles Superior Court announced in July its plans for the new system. Presiding Judge Samantha Jessner said at the time, "A person's ability to pay a large sum of money should not be the determining factor in deciding whether that person, who is presumed innocent, stays in jail before trial or is released."

Speaking to the Board of Supervisors last week, some county supervisors said that their offices have received many calls from residents concerned about the new system's impact on crime, particularly given the recent mob-style smash-and-grab burglaries in which the suspects in those crimes reportedly were arrested and quickly released before committing more crimes.

Trump joined Republican congressional leaders at Camp David on Friday to plot the party’s 2018 midterm agenda, as the media focused in large part on salacious tales recounted by Wolff in his book,

“Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” which went on sale earlier in the day.

Trump claimed Thursday night that he had not authorized White House access for the book, warning readers to “look at this guy’s past,” an apparent dig at Wolff’s credibility, and referring to Steve Bannon, his former chief strategist, as “sloppy Steve.”

“I authorized Zero access to White House (actually turned him down many times) for author of phony book!

I never spoke to him for book,” the president wrote on Twitter Thursday night. “Full of lies, misrepresentations and sources that don’t exist. Look at this guy’s past and watch what happens to him and Sloppy Steve!”

Trump’s assertion that he never spoke to Wolff for the book seems to contradict information from White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who said the president did once speak to Wolff,

albeit briefly and not in a formal interview setting.

Wolff’s book has put the Trump administration on the defensive this week, pushing back against embarrassing passages in the book that paint the president as ignorant, impulsive, narcissistic and inept and his West Wing disorganized and backbiting.

Sanders has said the book is ridden with falsehoods and is “complete fantasy and just full of tabloid gossip.”

And while Wolff is a well-known writer, his new book has resurfaced old questions from some about his journalistic practices. Sanders complained Thursday that Wolff’s book contained

little mistakes indicative of sloppy work, such as writing that White House communications director Hope Hicks is 26 years old when she is actually 29.

In the days since excerpts of the book began to surface, the most notable consequence has been a wedge seemingly driven between Trump and Bannon over remarks attributed to the latter in the book.

According to Wolff, Bannon called a summer 2016 meeting between Trump campaign leadership and a Russian attorney promising Kremlin-sourced incriminating information on Hillary Clinton as “unpatriotic” and “treasonous.”

Bannon, who is also quoted making derisive and dismissive statements about the president, has not denied any of the comments.

Trump responded to Bannon’s words in the book with a scathing statement, declaring that the former chief strategist had “lost his mind” when he left the White House.

Inglis said the two lived in Lethbridge, Alta., and they had been together since university. He said they were on day five of a week-long trip, and would go out at least twice a year — often in the spring and fall.

"They are a couple that loved each other and loved the outdoors. And they were highly, highly experienced in being out back, whether it be serious treks or canoeing, whitewater canoeing in the North country," he said.

Inglis said Doug worked as a lab scientist, and Gusse was the lead technician at the same workplace.

Inglis said the two provided daily updates from their trip to him from their Garmin inReach — a GPS often used by backcountry campers and hikers which allows texting and other messages from remote locations.

He said he received a message that day that they hadn't gotten to the site they had intended, but that they were fine and setting up camp.

"They were probably making dinner and they were letting us know that they were OK," Inglis said.

But later that evening, he said, he received an SOS from the Garmin that there had been a bear attack.

"The message said, 'Bear attack bad,'" Inglis said.

Parks Canada also received an alert from a GPS device in the Red Deer River Valley west of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch at about 8 p.m. on Friday indicating a bear attack.

"That night was a start, obviously, of what's continuing to be a grieving process. You have that notification, you know that something bad is happening. You don't have a lot of information," Inglis said.

Inglis said the couple were highly experienced in the backcountry with an extensive set of equipment, and the attack was a devastating case of the "wrong place at the wrong time."

Once it got dark, he said, they would typically get into their tent and read.

"We believe that's what they were doing," said Inglis, adding the dog would have been in the tent with the couple before the attack.

He said the parks team found the tent had been crushed with their e-readers inside.

The couple, he added, was found outside the tent. Inglis said he was told that a bear spray canister had been emptied and that there were signs the couple tried to scare off the bear.

"There was a struggle and the struggle didn't stay in one place," he said.

Parks Canada says bear had lower than normal body fat

Parks Canada said the bear that killed Inglis and Gusse was not previously known to them and had lower than normal body fat for this time of year.

In a media release issued Tuesday, Parks Canada said it conducted a necropsy on the bear, and found it to be a non-lactating older female estimated to be over 25 years old.

Parks Canada said the bear was deemed to be in fair body condition, but its teeth were in poor condition.

"DNA samples from the bear have been sent to the lab [and confirmed] that it was the animal responsible for the attack. Updated results from these studies will only be provided if they differ from the information shared to date," the media release said.

The bear was shot and killed hours after the emergency response call was received, when Parks Canada staff arrived at the scene and the bear charged the response team.

Parks Canada said two cans of bear spray were found at the scene, and the couple's food had been hung appropriately.

"The individuals were on a backcountry hiking and camping trip and had the appropriate permits to do so. The individuals were also travelling with their dog," Parks Canada said.

At the time of the incident, there was no active bear warning or area closure in place. The area remains closed to the public.

"Bear attacks are rare occurrences. Fatal bear attacks are even less frequent. Over the last 10 years, there have been three recorded non-fatal, contact encounters with grizzly bears in Banff National Park. These incidents were the result of surprise encounters. This incident is the first grizzly bear-caused fatality recorded in Banff National Park in decades," Parks Canada said.

Last Thursday, the US House of Representatives passed its annual State Department and Foreign Operations spending bill, which determines the budget for the State Department and its foreign operations. The legislation allocates funds to agencies and programs to strengthen national security and support US allies, particularly against the Chinese Communist Party.
