The Biden administration is restarting deportations of illegal immigrants to Venezuela, officials said Thursday, vowing “harsh” consequences for those who try to jump the border moving forward.

 

An administration official said officials already have a group of Venezuelans in mind for the first flight, which will take place “in the next few days.”

 

“Today’s announcement is a key part of our continuing efforts to strengthen the consequences that are in place at the border for migrants who cross unlawfully,” the senior official told reporters.

 

The policy applies to Venezuelans who enter between the legal border crossings. It does not apply to Venezuelans who don’t have a visa to enter but schedule their arrivals anyway, seeking to take advantage of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ “parole” programs.

 

The move stands in contrast with a decision Mr. Mayorkas made just weeks ago to grant a deportation amnesty to migrants who made it to the U.S. before the end of July.

 

In declaring Temporary Protected Status on Sept. 20, Mr. Mayorkas said the South American country was in turmoil and wasn’t safe enough to take back hundreds of thousands of migrants who made it here.

 

Officials didn’t have a good answer for what changed in the last two weeks to make removals palatable, saying only that it’s common practice to deport some people even as countries have been designated for TPS.

 

Those who arrived before July 31 won’t be targets.

 

Officials promised a “significant” number of flights back to Venezuela, and said the Maduro government, which has been at odds with the U.S. for years, has agreed to work with taking the deportees back.

 

The deportation announcement came a day after Mr. Mayorkas announced he has waived 26 laws in order to speed construction of miles of border wall in southern Texas.

 

The one-two punch seems intended to get a handle on the surge of illegal immigrants at the southern border — a problem that has plagued the Biden administration from its first days, but has risen to new heights in recent weeks.

From May 1 to Aug. 31, Customs and Border Protection encountered more than 1 million unauthorized migrants.

 

A senior official said Thursday that roughly 300,000 migrants have been ousted since May 12. The official didn’t say what happened to the others, though it’s likely most were caught and released.

Then, yes, Dems joining with a handful of Republicans to oust McCarthy then a protracted GOP fight to select a new speaker could conceivably result in Trump taking the Speakership for a limited time.

 

If again, the Q team "has it all" and Brandon and HO are swept away before an embattled HO can get a VP pick through confirmation in the Senate (see how Gavin Newsome picked a former HO aide for the senate, so possible fuckery afloat there), then Speaker of the House is in line to take the WH.

 

What I just cannot envision without a lot of arm twisting is how both Brandon and HO would be quickly swept away to make way for Trump. The Dems could not explain it to their people - but maybe they are set up not to be able to do that (the destruction of the D party).

 

So, I will concede that Trump taking the speakership is possible, but until I see the improbable and see both Brandon and Ho swept away quickly (before HO can bring in Newsome or another Dem lackey), I still don't see the path from Speaker to 47 for Trump outside of a landslide in the 2024 election.

A harrowing surveillance footage has captured the moment a twin-engine plane crashed at an airport in west-central Brazil, killing the pilot and a terminal worker while two passengers survived.

 

The aircraft crashed just moments after it had taken off from Bom Futuro Airport in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, on Wednesday afternoon.

 

The King Air C90 plane could be seen falling sideways and then trying to land on the runway. But it crashed on the tarmac and skidded it away.

 

It finally came to a full stop near a passenger terminal and burst on fire before it exploded.

 

The small plane's pilot, Fernando Kawahata, 42, died instantly.

 

Juan Jaramillo, a 62-year-old Venezuelan national, was killed after a part of the engine struck him near the terminal building.

 

The two survivors, Adelar Jacobowski, 55, and Valdir Jacobowski, 52, are siblings who work in the agriculture industry and who owned the aircraft, were able to escape on their own, the Civil Police said.

 

They were rushed to a private hospital and treated for back and abdomen injuries. They were expected to be discharged Thursday.

 

The Brazilian Air Force's Regional Service for the Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents is investigating the cause of the accident.

 

The plane is the same model involved in the November 2021 crash that killed country music singer Marilia Mendoça. The pilot, co-pilot, who was also her uncle, and a producer also died.

 

Civil Police chief Marcos Lira told G1 news outlet that investigators are looking into whether the accident was caused by engine failure or negligence. They will also check to see if Kawahata had any existing health issues that may have contributed to the crash.

 

The injured farmers have not been interviewed yet because they are still in the early stages of recovery.

 

Kawahata is survived by his wife and two sons, ages 12 and 18.

 

'He died doing what he loved. It's difficult, but life goes on,' his eldest son told the outlet.

 

Kawahata's tragic death comes just two weeks after his mother passed away.

So, how does the IPA affect internet users? Let’s sum up its impact on online searches:

More surveillance: the IPA grants UK authorities – including intelligence and law enforcement agencies – the ability to collect and store a wide range of data on internet users, including their browsing history, emails, text messages, and more.

Data retention: the IPA also means the UK government can store this data for up to 12 months. This data doesn’t include the communications content, but it does include information about who you contacted, and when.

Bulk data collection: the IPA allows the UK authorities to gather and analyse large amounts of data en masse – indiscriminately invading the privacy of suspected and innocent internet users alike.

A ‘chilling effect’: in the long-term, the perceptions of increased surveillance and scrutiny the IPA’s presence and proposed updates will cause may lead to a ‘chilling effect’. Commandant retiring after 8 years at Citadel

CHARLESTON – Brig. Gen. Emory Mace, the commandant at The Citadel whose daughter was the first female graduate from the state military college, says he wants to retire.

 

Mace has been third-in-command at the school for eight years. He told the school's board of visitors Saturday he accomplished what he came to do – help men and women cadets coexist at the college.

 

"I feel I made a small difference in the life of The Citadel," said Mace, whose daughter Nancy enrolled in the first class of female cadets in 1996. She graduated in 1999.

 

Mace's departure could signify the end of a chapter in the college's 162-year history.

 

The gender controversy began in 1993 when Shannon Faulkner sought enrollment in day classes at The Citadel. Her admission was blocked and Faulkner sued. She eventually won her lawsuit but withdrew from the college five days after she enrolled in August 1995.

 

Mace's daughter was a part of the next class of four female cadets. Two of the women left after one semester, but Mace and Petra Lovetinska graduated. Since then, 67 women have graduated. Currently 130 of the 2,000 Corps of Cadets are women.

 

Citadel President Maj. Gen. John Grinalds will appoint a search committee to select a new commandant, possibly by July 1. Mace's last day will be Aug. 31.

Who is opposing the Online Safety Bill and Investigatory Powers Act updates?

Apple, Meta (which owns WhatsApp and Facebook) and Signal (an encrypted instant messaging service) have all vehemently opposed the Online Safety Bill, as well as the IPA – and its proposed expansions.

These companies argue that any attempt to scan messages undermines the security and integrity of the end-to-end encryption these apps offer.

Signal and WhatsApp have both threatened to remove their service from the UK altogether, while Apple has already weighed in on the current consultation, laying out that it wouldn’t make changes to its products’ security features for a specific country that would weaken its product for all users.

Apple has also argued that it wouldn’t be possible to make changes to its messaging services’ security features without a software update required – so it couldn’t be done behind closed doors, as the IPA proposes. The company also stated, more broadly, that the IPA’s new additions “constitute a serious and direct threat to data security and information privacy” – not just for people who use Apple’s products and services only in the UK, but around the world (cited by the BBC).

Other notable companies that have spoken out against the Online Safety Bill and snoopers’ charter – and the UK government’s attempts at mass surveillance in general – include:

Signal’s president Meredith Whittaker has been a particularly vocal critic. Speaking to the BBC, she said the Online Safety Bill’s powers would compel messaging providers to “run government-mandated scanning services on their devices”.

In addition to the tech companies it stands to negatively impact on most (a number estimated to be around 25,000), the snoopers’ charter has also met criticism from a range of UK-based and global human rights, civil liberties, and online privacy advocates, such as Open Rights Group, Privacy International, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), and Liberty.

The latter, Liberty, is embroiled in an ongoing legal battle with the charter’s dictates. In April 2018, it took a case – The People vs The Snoopers’ Charter, backed by more than £55,000 in public donations – to the High Court, and won. However, the case resurfaced in August 2019, when the High Court did a backflip and deemed that the IPA’s use of bulk warrants to collect and store data were, indeed, lawful. Liberty lost the case.

Liberty is appealing the decision, however, and is set to bring cases against other parts of the charter to court in the coming months and years.

Innovative technologies can foster a greener future by transforming finance. A case in point is the work being done by the BIS Innovation Hub Centre in Hong Kong. Bénédicte Nolens, head of the center, explains how Project Genesis 1.0 and 2.0 aim at making it more attractive to issue and invest in green bonds.

In many countries, issuing and investing in bonds can be cumbersome and complex, involving many steps and parties, and typically requiring a considerable financial commitment from the investor. For those investing in environmentally friendly projects, there is uncertainty about whether the bond issuer is delivering the positive green impact it committed to at issuance. Also, there are typically no liquid and transparent secondary markets for retail investors.

The BIS Innovation Hub and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) successfully developed two prototype digital platforms that bring to life the vision that an investor can download an app and invest any amount into safe government bonds, which will develop a green project. Over the bond's lifetime, the investor can not only see accrued interest, but also track in real time how much clean energy is being generated, and the consequent reduction in CO2 emissions linked to the investment. Further, the investor can sell the bonds in a transparent market.

Overview of Project Genesis

The Innovation Hub and HKMA completed two prototypes in conjunction with private sector consortiums:

The first prototype simulates the life cycle of a typical bond on a permissioned distributed ledger platform, including origination, subscription, settlement and secondary trading. The prototype was able to considerably streamline these processes.

The SpaceX CEO spoke at the 74th International Astronautical Congress where he was rewarded the World Space Award. During his interview, Musk went on a tangent about his theory on aliens.

 

"People often ask me if I'm seeing any evidence of aliens — and I unfortunately have seen no evidence of aliens yet," Musk said. "We are the aliens," he joked.

 

The topic of discussion was Musk's Starship mega-rocket, which makes the SpaceX's Falcon 1 look like "a child's toy," Musk said.

 

But the tech billionaire made sure to also mention his thoughts on extraterrestrial life.

 

He said his observations suggest that "humanity is all that exists in a vast darkness." In other words, that we're all alone.

 

Musk once talked about aliens with Twitter employees in June 2022 before he purchased the company. In the talk, he said he hadn't seen "actual evidence for aliens."

 

Still, Musk has joked about the existence of life outside of Earth — and has even suggested he may be an alien walking among us. If an alien paid this planet a visit, he's also said he'd be the one of the first to know.

 

Musk said his new artificial intelligence company, xAI, could help humans solve issues related to contacting aliens if they do exist.

Civil Rights Agency Sues 2 Businesses That Fired Workers Over COVID Vaccine Refusal

 

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has sued two businesses for firing workers who had sought religious exemptions to COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

 

United Healthcare Services, a Cleveland-based health care provider, and Arkansas-based Hank's Furniture violated federal law when denying the exemption requests and firing the workers, according to the suits.

 

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 bars discrimination over religion and requires businesses to accommodate a worker's religious practice unless doing so would cause "undue hardship."

 

“Once an employer is on notice that an employee’s sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance prevents the employee from getting a COVID-19 vaccine, the employer must provide a reasonable accommodation unless it would pose an undue hardship,” Debra Lawrence, a regional attorney for the EEOC, said in a statement. “Neither healthcare providers nor COVID-19 vaccination requirements are excepted from Title VII’s protections against religious discrimination.”

 

Marsha Rucker, another EEOC attorney, said the suit against the furniture retailer "should remind employers they must communicate with employees requesting accommodation for religious beliefs and try to accommodate those beliefs whenever reasonably possible."

 

She pointed to a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that found in favor of a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier who sued after the service refused to accommodate his request not to work on Sundays.

 

"There is now a higher bar for employers to meet when denying a religious accommodation," Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel, a law firm that brings similar cases, said in a statement. "People should not have to choose between their faith and their job.”

 

The EEOC said in 2021 that businesses could impose COVID-19 vaccine mandates but would need to provide religious and medical accommodations.

 

United Healthcare told The Epoch Times in an email that it plans to "vigorously defend ourselves" against the suit.

 

"Among other things, the EEOC’s contention that the employee in question was a remote worker with no in-person job responsibilities is inaccurate," the company said. "We continue to respect individual beliefs, while working to ensure the health, well-being, and safety of our colleagues and those we are privileged to serve."

 

Hank's Furniture didn't have lawyers listed on the court docket and couldn't otherwise be reached.
