The lobbying group for older Americans just told its nearly 38 million members to “hustle” for another Covid jab, even if they have already had five boosters.

 

See for yourself. The following question-and-answer column ran in the organization’s December “AARP Bulletin”:

 

 

AARP is open to anyone 50 or older.

 

The column does not specify a narrower or higher age range for its recommendation.

 

Thus it implies that even a 50-year-old who has not already had six “Covid boosters” needs to “catch up” with another immediately.

 

Keep in mind that someone who has had “five Covid boosters” has actually received seven mRNA jabs - the initial two-shot primary vaccination regimen, followed by five boosters.

 

Thus AARP is suggesting its members should be taking their eighth jab of mRNA in the last three years.

 

 

Yet scientists have essentially no safety data beyond a third shot, much less a fourth or more, and thus no way of knowing if the risks of repeated mRNA dosing rise with each shot.

 

AARP’s unbelievably bad advice doesn’t end there.

 

The column then goes on to tell members that “the most recent shot, which was released in September 2023, isn’t actually a booster. It’s a new vaccine that targets the latest variants.”

 

A what-now? A new vaccine?

Guess it must have gone through the randomized trials that are required in the United States for any new drug or vaccine.

Let’s just call it a new vaccine anyway, since our elderly readers have gotten kinda suspicious of the failure of the Covid shots they’ve already taken.

 

But the article ends on a happy note: Researchers are even working on a combined COVID-flu vaccine, so a few years from now, a single shot from your doctor or pharmacy may be all you need to protect yourself fully…

The filmmaker behind a controversial video that initially was blamed for inciting violence in the Middle East that led to the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, says the Obama administration was irresponsible when it blamed him for the attacks.

 

Nakoula Bassely Nakoula, who spoke in a phone interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper after being released from prison for a probation violation, said he was “shocked” when he was blamed for the attack.

 

“I never thought my movie can cause anyone any trouble or anyone can get killed from my movie,” Nakoula said.

 

Nakoula only said “no comment” when asked whether he thought the administration had put him in danger or whether he blames then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the trouble the film caused him, but he said he does not hold President Barack Obama personally responsible.

The featured time-lapse sequence was taken over the course of six months in 2015 from Surgères, Charente-Maritime, France, and shows not only how Venus changes phase, but changes angular size as well. When Venus is on the far side of the Sun from the Earth, it appears angularly smallest and nearest to full phase, while when Venus and Earth are on the same side of the Sun, Venus appears larger, but as a crescent. Austin was admitted to the hospital Monday night for “complications following a recent elective medical procedure,” the Pentagon press secretary, Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, said in a statement Friday evening. (My guess he had his stomach stapled.)

 

Austin released a statement Saturday taking responsibility for not disclosing his condition sooner.

 

"I am very glad to be on the mend and look forward to returning to the Pentagon soon. I also understand the media concerns about transparency and I recognize I could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I commit to doing better," Austin said. "But this is important to say: this was my medical procedure, and I take full responsibility for my decisions about disclosure.”

 

President Joe Biden spoke with Austin on Saturday evening, according to a senior administration official, who indicated it was the first phone call between the president and Austin since his hospitalization. “It was a warm conversation,” the senior administration official said. (Kek)

International partnerships, such as those within numerous squadrons across many of our Deltas in which Allied personnel work actively side by side with our Guardians on our Ops floors, ensure we are able to protect America and our Allies in, from, and to space…now and into the future. Certainly, our most vital asset is our people. Thank you to all the Guardians and Airmen, military and civilian alike, for all you have done to promote SpOC’s no-fail mission. 2,000-year-old 'celestial calendar' discovered in ancient Chinese tomb

Archaeologists in China have unearthed a mysterious set of rectangular wooden pieces linked to an ancient astronomical calendar. The artifacts were discovered inside an exceptionally well-preserved 2,000-year-old tomb in the southwest of the country.

 

Each of the 23 wooden slips is about an inch (2.5 centimeters) wide and 4 inches (10 cm) long and displays a Chinese character related to the Tiangan Dizhi, or "Ten Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches" — a traditional Chinese astronomical calendar established during the Shang dynasty, which ruled from about 1600 B.C. to about 1045 B.C.

 

Archaeologists think one of the slips may have represented whatever was the current year and that the other 22 slips could have been used to specify any particular year in the ancient calendar, according to a translation of a story on the China News website, an agency run by the Chinese government.

 

Circular perforations at the edges of each slip suggest they were once tied together.

 

However, it's not yet clear how the set of calendrical wooden slips would have functioned, an expert told Live Science.

 

This is the first time such objects have been found in an ancient tomb, although the practice of writing characters on strips of wood or bamboo was common in China before the invention of paper.

 

The wooden slips and many other artifacts were discovered earlier this year in a tomb in the Wulong district, about 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) southwest of Beijing, archaeologists from the Chongqing municipal government told the Global Times — which is also run by the Chinese government.

 

The tomb contains a written list of all the burial items, which also states that it was built in 193 B.C. That places the tomb during the time of the Western Han dynasty, which ruled much of China from 206 B.C. to A.D. 9; it was followed by the Eastern Han dynasty, which ruled until A.D. 220, and together they are considered a "golden age" when many Chinese traditions were established.

 

Archaeologist Wang Meng said the tomb was the best-preserved wooden-chamber tomb ever found in China's southwest.

 

Project leader Huang Wei told the Global Times that the tomb also contained more than 600 cultural artifacts, including lacquerware bowls, boxes, jars and plates. It also held bamboo utensils and musical pipes, spears and cooking tripods made from copper, wooden figurines, as well as pottery and bronze objects.

 

Astronomer Ed Krupp, the director of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles and author of "Echoes of the Ancient Skies: The Astronomy of Lost Civilizations" (Dover, 2003), who was not involved in the Wulong discovery, told Live Science that while the Tiangan Dizhi calendar is mainstream — it is used in Chinese astrology, for example — the wooden slips found in the Wulong tomb were unusual.

 

"The wooden slips with calendric notations are significant as the first and only known example of that kind of inscription on that kind of object," he said in an email.

 

But it doesn't appear that the set of wooden slips could have functioned as a calendar; instead, it seems they could have been used to reference any year of the 60-year calendrical cycle, he said.

 

"If so, they are not 'books,' but objects used to highlight a particular year," he said. He noted the similarity to a practice followed at a Taoist temple in the Chinese city of Suzhou, where each year in the cycle is represented by a statue that is specially marked when it becomes current.

 

Krupp said that the finds from the Wulong tomb showed that a person of high status had been buried there. "The artifacts interred with the deceased are numerous and very, very fine," he said. "This is rich, expensive material."

In an update issued around 11 a.m. on X, formerly Twitter, Astrobotic says its team thinks the issue is a “propulsion anomaly” that could threaten the ability of the spacecraft to soft land on the moon. Additionally, Peregrine’s battery is reaching “operationally low levels.”

 

Currently, the spacecraft is in an expected period of communication loss. Just before the outage, Astrobotic’s team reportedly “executed an improvised maneuver to reorient the solar panels toward the Sun.”

Supreme Court’s new ‘Code of Conduct’ is about appearances, not about ethics11 20 2023

On Nov. 13, the US Supreme Court — presumably motivated by bad publicity after the exposure of bribery schemes involving justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch, use of judicial aides to promote justice Sonia Sotomayor’s books, and other unsavory activities — announced what it calls a “Code of Conduct,” and what most media outlets describe as an “ethics code.”

 

The new code goes off the conduct/ethics rails before finishing its short opening statement, asserting that its purpose is to “dispel” the “misunderstanding” that the justices “regard themselves as unrestricted by any ethics rules,” rather than to actually restrict the justices with any ethics rules.

 

Because the document — 15 pages, including the opening statement, the “code” itself, and commentary/notes — doesn’t provide for any penalty or punishment whatsoever should a justice violate it, the justices remain as unrestricted after its publication as they clearly regarded themselves before.

 

Even ignoring the absence of consequences, the code itself is full of lofty and often ambiguous “shoulds” and “should nots” rather than specific and well-defined “shalls” and “shall nots.”

 

As codes go, this one’s far more Emily Post than Exodus 20. It’s not about what the justices may or may not do, it’s about how the court wants or doesn’t want to look.

 

Does anyone find this surprising? Letting government agencies regulate themselves always results in government agents (especially those who regard themselves as enjoying tenure for life) leaving themselves room to do whatever they like.

 

In theory, Congress can impose binding rules on the Supreme Court. Contra justice Samuel Alito (“No provision in the Constitution gives them the authority to regulate the Supreme Court — period”), Article III of the U.S. Constitution specifies that the justices hold their seats “during good Behaviour,” and that the court operates in its appellate capacity “under such Regulations as the Congress shall make.”

 

In practice, impeaching individual justices seems like the best way of imposing the “good Behaviour” requirement, but that remedy’s only been applied once, and threatened once more, in 240 years. In 1804, justice Samuel Chase was acquitted by the Senate. In 1969, Abe Fortas resigned from the court under impeachment threat.

 

The “checks and balances” system seems, unsurprisingly, to not work very well. The Supreme Court remains at least potentially on the take … if you’ve got the money to buy the rulings you want.

PARIS, Jan 8 (Reuters) - French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne resigned on Monday, as President Emmanuel Macron seeks to give a new impetus to his second mandate ahead of European parliament elections and the Paris Olympics this summer.

The change in prime minister comes after a year marred by political crises triggered by contested reforms of the pension system and immigration laws.
