This is another mischaracterized proposition. The opposition says:

 

ARGUMENT AGAINST PROPOSITION 1

 

Governor Newsom's Proposition 1 is a nightmare for taxpayers, cities and counties, and people with mental illness.

 

Prop. 1 is so huge, expensive, and destructive, it's already attracted a BIPARTISAN coalition of opponents. Vote NO because:

 

PROP. 1 WILL COST TAXPAYERS MORE THAN $10 BILLION. Prop. 1 puts taxpayers on the hook for DECADES to pay back new bonds. This isnโ€™t "free money!" It's credit card borrowing from Wall Street. According to Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, bonds are the most expensive and inefficient way to pay for a government program. And with interest rates today, it's a VERY BAD TIME to be taking on new bond debt, adding at least 60% IN INTEREST COSTS, costing taxpayers an estimated $10.58 - $12.45 billion. This will take decades to pay back. The State should have prioritized spending through the budget process when we had a $100 billion state budget surplus. Our children will be paying our debts, and their streets wonโ€™t be any cleaner for it.

 

PROP. 1 ISN'T A SOLUTION TO HOMELESSNESS. The State has failed at reducing California's homelessness problem. Sacramento has already thrown $20 billion at the crisis in the last five years without making significant progress. The number of unhoused people increased 6% last year. The State Auditor's Office is still trying to find where the billions went.

We will indeed have more tents in our neighborhoods and fewer people in treatment if Prop. 1 passes.

 

If the state wants a grand solution for homelessness, it should attack the heart of the problem through the regular budget processโ€“not expensive bond measures that RAISE TAXPAYER COSTS LONG-TERM. Californians are already some of the most over-taxed people in the country.

 

PROP. 1 CUTS SERVICES FOR THE MENTALLY ILL. In 2004, the voters passed Proposition 63, the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA), which dedicated funds for community-based mental health services. Prop. 1 STEALS AWAY almost 1/3 of that guaranteed annual funding from the "millionaire's tax" leaving already underfunded programs to fight for the remaining money. That's why CalVoices, California's oldest mental health advocacy agency, opposes it.

 

PROP. 1 MANDATES STATE CONTROL OVER LOCAL CONTROL, WITH REDUCED OVERSIGHT.California's 58 urban and rural counties all have different needs. Prop. 1 brings a one-size-fits-all program and puts a huge, unaccountable state agency in charge. The voter-approved MHSA was locally based, allowing counties to set their own priorities, with mandatory, independent oversight and accountability. Under Prop. 1, oversight and accountability are watered down, instead giving authority to the governor and his bureaucrats. This threatens effective programs that counties already offer.

 

Leave it to Sacramento to find a way to INCREASE COSTS, CUT VITAL PROGRAMS, and offer only UNPROVEN IDEAS! Far from being a magic solution, Prop. 1 is a multibillion dollar disaster that will hurt the very people it claims to help. And who's left holding the bag when Prop. 1 fails? The taxpayers, once again.

 

THIS IS THE WRONG APPROACH. VOTE NO ON PROP. 1.

Dayton Ohio History and Seal

 

Dayton, city, seat (1803) of Montgomery county, southwestern Ohio, U.S., located 54 miles (87 km) northeast of Cincinnati, on a low floodplain of the Great Miami River, at the confluence of the Stillwater and Mad rivers and Wolf Creek. It is the heart of a metropolitan area that includes the cities of Kettering, Miamisburg, Xenia, Fairborn, Oakwood, Centerville, Beavercreek, and Vandalia.

 

Following the peace treaty with the Shawnee Indians, signed at Greenville (1795), the area was opened to white settlement. The town was laid out by a group of Revolutionary War veterans, including Jonathan Dayton from New Jersey, for whom it was named. It developed as a river port for the shipment of agricultural produce, mainly to New Orleans. The opening of the Miami and Erie Canal, from Dayton to Cincinnati, in 1829, and the arrival in 1851 of a railroad to Springfield stimulated Daytonโ€™s commercial and industrial growth. The town became the home of the cash register after the mechanical money drawer was invented there in 1879 by James Ritty and perfected by John Henry Patterson in the 1880s. In addition, the automobile self-starter was developed there by Charles F. Kettering, who, along with Edward A. Deeds, also produced ignition systems and electric lighting equipment for farms. In 1892 Wilbur and Orville Wright opened their bicycle repair shop in Dayton, where they conducted experiments that led to the first sustained and controlled flight of a powered airplane, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903; a monolith has been erected in memory of the brothers, who are buried in the cityโ€™s Woodland Cemetery.

In 1913 the most disastrous of a series of floods occurred in the area. After this, the Miami Conservancy District, a comprehensive flood-control project, was created. Dayton experienced the suburbanization typical of many North American cities after World War II; the central city lost residents and businesses while the metropolitan area grew overall. By the 1990s, efforts to revitalize the city centre had succeeded in bringing new commercial and residential development to the city.

 

Dayton is now the heart of a large diversified urban complex and a market and distribution centre for a fertile agricultural region. Within the metropolitan area are the University of Dayton (Roman Catholic; 1850), Wright State University (1967), the United Theological Seminary (United Methodist; 1871), Sinclair Community College (1887), and Miami-Jacobs (junior) Career College (1860). Dayton has an art institute, a museum of natural history, and a symphony orchestra. The Dayton home of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872โ€“1906) is preserved as a state memorial and museum; the cityโ€™s Greek Revival-style Old Courthouse (1850) now houses the Montgomery County Historical Society museum. Recreational facilities include Carillon Park, noted for concerts and historical exhibits (including a replica of the Wright Brothers bicycle shop). The Miamisburg Mound, one of the largest conical earthworks built by the prehistoric Adena culture (with a height of 65 feet [20 metres] and a circumference of 877 feet [267 metres]), is located just southwest of the city. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, โ€œThe Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.โ€

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

โ€œPompeo asked to meetโ€ the pope, who turned him down because Francis had โ€œclearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,โ€ Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vaticanโ€™s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeoโ€™s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the churchโ€™s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. The momentum continues to build for a global digitalized system that will be the final control grid โ€” marking, tracking and monitoring the movement of all things, living and non-living.

 

Another country, Nepal, has just announced it will submit to the global beast system and digitally mark all of its citizens starting at birth.

 

Iโ€™ve reported on similar moves in many other countries including Australia, the E.U., Ghana, and China, all characterized by a biometric digital ID. The United Nations itself is organizing a global effort to digitally register all births worldwide.

 

Now, the government of Nepal will require the digital identity of its citizens as it starts assigning them digital ID numbers at birth. This is the so-called โ€œbirth registrationโ€ that Iโ€™ve been warning about for years as it was included in the United Nations Agenda 2030 document signed in 2015 by more than 190 heads of state, including Barack Obama, as part of its โ€œsustainable development goals.โ€ I knew early on that the โ€œlegal identityโ€ and โ€œbirth registrationโ€ required by the UN system would be digital, even though the word โ€œdigitalโ€ did not appear in the original document.

 

As reported by the Nepal newspaper, The Kathmandu Post, the Department of National ID and Civil Registration has started issuing digital numbers to pave the way for wider adoption of the national digital identity cards.

 

Nepalโ€™s national ID is a federal identity card issued by the Department of National ID and Civil Registration with a unique number assigned to each person when their birth is registered by the state. Nepali citizens will obtain the cards based on their biometric and demographic data. The card features a unique number, photo, personal information and the bearerโ€™s fingerprints.

 

The department claims that the biometric โ€œsmart cardโ€ will have several uses and that officials can read it using secure terminals.

 

Mukesh Kumar Keshar, the director at Nepalโ€™s Department of National ID and Civil Registration, said:

 

โ€œWe have been informally providing national ID numbers to people at their birth registration across the country for the past two months. Such numbers are being given to around 2,000 people a day. When a personโ€™s identity is created from early childhood, it will be easier for such persons to get government documents, including the national ID.โ€

 

Goal 16.9 of the UN Agenda 2030 calls for a โ€œlegal identity for all, including birth registration, by 2030.โ€ The UN says on its website the digital registration of all persons โ€œis key to advance the 2030 Agenda commitment to leave no one behind.โ€

 

Let that sink in. They are telling us that, according to their vision, no person on planet Earth will be left behind, meaning all will be required to participate in the beast system. They will be numbered, and have their movement and behaviors tracked and monitored 24/7. This will be so they can track and assess your carbon footprint, among other things.

 

Nepal will formally launch its digital identity program within a few weeks.

There have been days when the hardware on my computer (or keyboard or mouse) fails, just when I least need equipment failure the most.

There have been at least three times when my equipment died, and I could not afford to replace it.

But I've devoted my life, for the past few years, to doing the will of God in furtherance of the fight we're waging from here, and so guess what happened, on each of those three occasions?

Each time, I went into the Corner Office, and knelt down in front of one of the pictures of Jesus Christ that we have hanging in the house.

I just asked God to please fix the broken equipment, and - POOF - everything worked fine again.

I have so many other examples of the hand of God, steering this battle, but those "equipment failure" corrections are the most notable to me because, after spilling coffee on devices and having a cat and a dog do damage to my laptop, mouse, and keyboard, there is no way my stuff should still be working today.

I'm blown away at how present God is, in this fight, and I know he's the Chief of Everything.

So yes, Anon,with God, ALL things are possible.

God clearly wants us to keep fighting and needs us to keep fighting.

God is the Brains.

We are the Brawn.

Enoch wonderful book, all it does is verify older stories in older cultures that seems to have more concise stories than what is propagated to modern people.

 

The entire Genesis 6 account which started me on this path ties in as well. Gary Wayne was an excellent research but sadly for most biblical scholars they never look at other cultures stories to find unification in narrative. The hebrew bible is not special .

Some extraordinary asteroids have โ€œactivityโ€โ€”comet-like tails or envelopes of gas and dust. NASAโ€™s Active Asteroids project announced the discovery of activity on fifteen asteroids, challenging conventional wisdom about the solar system.

 

To find these fifteen rare objects, more than 8000 volunteers combed through 430,000 images from the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the Victor M. Blanco telescope in Chile. A paper about the results, now published in the Astronomical Journal, includes nine volunteers among the co-authors.

 

โ€œFor an amateur astronomer like me it's a dream come true.โ€ said volunteer Virgilio Gonano from Udine, Italy. โ€œCongratulations to all the staff and the friends that also check the images!โ€

 

Studying these rare active asteroids teaches scientists about the formation and evolution of the solar system, including the origins of water here on Earth. These objects may also aid future space exploration because the same ices that cause comet-like tails can power rockets or provide breathable air.

 

โ€œI have been a member of the Active Asteroids team since its first batch of data,โ€ said volunteer Tiffany Shaw-Diaz from Dayton, Ohio. โ€œAnd to say that this project has become a significant part of my life is an understatement. It's been 25 years since Jake Lloyd played the young Anakin Skywalker in the first Star Wars prequel, 1999's Episode I โ€” The Phantom Menace. Since then, he's stepped away from acting and has been dealing with his mental health, his mother explained in a recent interview.

 

According to Lisa Lloyd, Jake is about 10 months into an 18-month stay at a mental health rehabilitation facility after suffering what she called "a full-blown psychotic break."

 

Lloyd says her son was having a bad day when he was driving home from McDonald's in March 2023. โ€œHe said he wanted to turn the car off. And he turned the car off in the middle of the three lanes, and we were in the middle lane,โ€ Lloyd told Scripps News. โ€œThere was a lot of yelling and screaming.โ€โ€œThe police got there, and they asked Jake some questions,โ€ she continued. โ€œHe was talking to them, but none of it made sense. It was all word salad.โ€

 

Jake was taken to a hospital instead of jail and several months later he was transferred to an inpatient program at a mental health rehab facility.

 

Lloyd explained that her son's troubles began in high school when he struggled with defining reality and a doctor suggested he might have bipolar disorder. Jake was later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, with the neurological condition anosognosia complicating efforts at treatment.

 

โ€œWhen they finally told him, it totally threw him off into an even worse depression,โ€ Lloyd said. โ€œIt was really hard.โ€

Huntsville, Alabama, is fiercely proud of its Rocket City nickname - earned for its crucial role in America's space race success.

The city, which transformed in the 1950s from a cotton market town to the world's foremost hub for space travel research, is home to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, which led development of the Saturn rockets that put the first man on the moon.

But there is a dark side to the story of these epic achievements: many of the men who led the groundbreaking work were Nazis - recruited through a top secret operation after the Second World War.

 

The fascinating, and troubling, reality is often omitted from lessons about America's victory in the space race against the Soviet Union. It is also something Huntsville continues to grapple with today.

There are those who say the 'greater good' outweighed the moral cost of recruiting members of an evil regime, allowing them to avoid justice in the process.

But others say bringing these men to the US was an inexcusable decision - compounded by the fact their Nazi backgrounds go largely unmentioned in lessons about America's space history.

 

The Nazi scientists who were key to America's space ambitions were recruited through a top secret program called Operation Paperclip.

Following the defeat of the Nazis and the conclusion of World War Two in 1945, the United States and its allies were aware that Germany was home to some of the greatest scientific minds, including pioneers in rocket engineering.

America set about recruiting these scientists to further its own military research. As tensions with the Soviet Union increased, which ultimately led to the Cold War, the scheme was also intended to prevent other hostile nations from recruiting the Germans.

 

Around 1,600 scientists were brought to the US through Operation Paperclip, which was approved by President Harry S. Truman and named after the paperclips attached to the personnel files of Germans eyed for recruitment.

Foremost among the scientists was Wernher von Braun, a Nazi and member of the SS, the notorious paramilitary wing of the party.

Von Braun was complicit in war crimes and played a leading role in the development of the V-2 rocket, which was built using slave labor and used by the Nazi regime to kill thousands of civilians. Despite his background, he would later become a hero in the US.

 

Von Braun and a team of his specialists were brought to the US in 1945 and initially based at Fort Bliss, Texas, where they worked on missile systems.

Historians have said about half of von Braunโ€™s team of around 118 men were members of the Nazi party.

Five years later, he was transferred to Redstone Arsenal, an Army base near Huntsville, along with a team of other German engineers to develop the nation's first ballistic missiles.

 

It was this move which started this former cotton town on its journey to becoming the global epicenter of space rocket development.

Before 1950, Huntsville was a poor, segregated town with a population of about 16,000 people.

By 1960, the year that the Marshall Space Flight Center was established, the city was a hub of rocket research.

 

Von Braun was appointed the first head of the center, which opened at the Redstone Arsenal two years after NASA was formed in 1958.

He was already one of the most famous scientists in America for his rocket breakthroughs and lofty ambitions for space exploration. But the publicity which surrounded him rarely included mention of his Nazi past.

Sherman Mullin, who worked in the town in the late 1950s before joining aerospace manufacturer Lockheed, told the LA Times: 'There were basically four groups in Huntsville โ€” the local whites, the blacks, the Germans, and everybody from out of town, who were considered Yankees.

'None of the groups mingled. A Yankee couldn't get a date with a young lady in that town.'

The arrival of the Nazis was also difficult for their Jewish colleagues at NASA. Another central figure to NASA's early achievements was Kurt Heinrich Debus, another former SS member who was recruited through Operation Paperclip.

 

In Nazi Germany, Debus also played a central role in the development of the V missiles. He went on to become the first director of NASA's Launch Operations Center, which would later become the Kennedy Space Center.

Von Braun worked closely with Abraham Silverstein, a Jewish American engineer who grew up in Indiana and was a crucial figure at NASA. Silverstein coined the name for the Apollo missions and pioneered the use of liquid hydrogen fuel in rocket engines.

His son, David Silverstein, told the LA Times he believed his father was 'not totally fond of the situation'. Silverstein's daughter, Judy Cook, shared a similar view.

 

But ultimately, Silverstein was one of many NASA colleagues who were motivated to make progress through cooperation. He would say that there was 'never' animosity with von Braun and that the Nazi recruits 'were an important cog in the business and to have left them out would have been silly'.

Former Huntsville Mayor Loretta Spencer told the New York Times in 2007: โ€˜People said, โ€˜If you had just been at war with these people, how can you be so accepting of them?โ€™โ€

โ€˜But I think we were just in awe.โ€™

 

The Germans knew they would face animosity from locals. But many accounts explain how they made efforts to be accepted, including Von Braunโ€™s insistence that his team never speak German when Americans were in earshot.

The result was that in Huntsville, they were able to integrate in spite of their background, referred to by some as 'our Germans'. Von Braun forged personal links with several notable figures in Alabama as he rose to national prominence.

Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon on July 21, 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission.

 

Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and their crew mate Michael Collins were carried into space by a Saturn V missile built using the expertise of von Braun, Debus and many more other scientists recruited from Nazi Germany.

To this day, this epic feat of humanity is still regarded as a truly American achievement.

NASA's biographies of von Braun and Debus today make references to their Nazi backgrounds. Von Braun was 'was well aware of the terrible conditions' at the Nazi's V-2 missile plant and was 'involved in decision-making about the use of slave labor'.

 

Debus's biography notes that during his time as a scientist in Germany, he once reported a colleague, Richard Crรคmer, 'for criticizing Hitler and the Nazi Party, resulting in the Crรคmerโ€™s conviction under the Treachery Law'.

In Huntsville, where there is still a strong German presence, the city is careful to consider its achievements in the context of the controversial backstory.

As Mayor Tommy Battle noted during a 50th anniversary celebration of the Apollo 11 mission in 2019: 'For the first time in history it made Huntsville a place that had done something nobody else had done.'

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has opened the door to removing the โ€œmotion to vacateโ€ rule that led to the historic ouster of his predecessor.

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) agreed to lower the threshold to trigger a โ€œmotion to vacateโ€ during his marathon battle for the speakership.

The battle saw conservatives withhold their votes in exchange for concessions empowering rank-and-file members.

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) ultimately triggered a motion to vacate over McCarthyโ€™s failure to cut spending.

McCarthy was then booted from the speakership with eight Republicans voting against him.

Democrats and moderate Republicans have complained that the current rules on vacating the chair have made it difficult to govern.

Johnson, who has faced recurring threats of removal from his right, said members want a more โ€œnormal process.โ€

He revealed that the rules will โ€œprobablyโ€ change in the future.

โ€œI just think itโ€™s something that a lot of members on both sides of the aisle talk about openly that they have a desire for [a] more normal process on the House floor again,โ€ he said.

Raising the bar for a motion to vacate would be a triumph for the establishment GOP after the successful mutiny against McCarthy.

The move was hailed by Gaetz and others as the start of a new chapter in Washington D.C.

Since taking over, Johnson has prioritized keeping the government open and running, shepherding a $460 billion spending package to Democrat President Joe Bidenโ€™s desk last week.

The bill is one-half of a larger framework that is expected to cost $1.6 trillion.

Johnson has argued that the GOPโ€™s narrow majority in one house of Congress doesnโ€™t provide enough leverage to secure deeper cuts.

After months of pressure from Democrats, Johnson has also signaled he will bring up aid to Ukraine, a move that is certain to face criticism from Republicans.

Conservatives argue that Americaโ€™s Southern Border is a bigger concern than an endless foreign war.

While House conservatives have championed the current motion to vacate as a tool for holding leadership accountable, itโ€™s also not clear that they have any desire to re-live the drama that followed McCarthyโ€™s ouster.

โ€œI have never wanted to go down that road,โ€ Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said.

โ€œI didnโ€™t want to go down that road with Kevin, I donโ€™t want to go down that road with Mike.

โ€œBut you are correct, it is a tool at our disposal.โ€

In the media, Johnson has often been portrayed as the hapless captive of the โ€œfar-right.โ€

KALAMAZOO, MI โ€” A no-contact advisory along a stretch of the Kalamazoo River was issued Wednesday afternoon after Pfizer notified the city of Kalamazoo of a chemical spill.

 

Pfizer notified the Kalamazoo Department of Public Services around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, that an estimated 1,057 gallons of methylene chloride had been released within the process area of the manufacturing facility located at 7000 Portage Road.

 

It is not known how much of the colorless liquid was discharged into a dedicated sanitary sewer serving Pfizer, which then flows to the Kalamazoo Water Reclamation Plant for treatment, according to a joint news release from the city of Kalamazoo and the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department.

 

All persons are being asked to avoid contact with the Kalamazoo River from Paterson Street Bridge in the city of Kalamazoo to the D Avenue Bridge in Cooper Township.

 

โ€œWe decided to issue a no-contact advisory for the stretch of river impacted by the methylene chloride release as a precautionary measure,โ€ Kalamazoo County Health Officer Jim Rutherford said. โ€œThis advisory will remain in effect until further investigation and sampling indicates that there is no risk to public health.โ€

 

While the water reclamation plant is designed and permitted to treat up to 291 gallons per day of methylene chloride, the total volume of methylene chloride that reached the plant following Tuesdayโ€™s release is still not known, the release states.

 

Sampling of the Kalamazoo River within the identified area is ongoing and will continue as long as necessary until results can be analyzed and the advisory lifted.

In what some claim is a larger campaign to drive Americans out of rural areas and centralize access to food, the Biden administration is rolling out a draconian and needless new wastewater rule that could put small and mid-size food processing facilities out of business.

 

A large group of United States senators and representatives are demanding the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) withdraw a new meat and poultry wastewater proposal, which they claim โ€œstands to hamper rural economies and drive small- and mid-sized processing facilities out of business.โ€

 

โ€œGiven the technical complexity and high costs of wastewater treatment alterations, coupled with the massive expansion of the number of regulated facilities, a 60-day comment period demonstrates EPA is not interested in seeking meaningful input from the regulated industry. As such, we urge EPA to withdraw the rule,โ€ the lawmakers wrote in a letter to EPA officials.

 

โ€œThe proposed rule exposes hundreds of operators to a new regulatory regime with significant costs and a disregard of the ramifications on stakeholders โ€ฆ We are concerned the number of potential closures is likely much higher than estimated, and we believe it is irresponsible for EPA to propose regulations that will arbitrarily close plants and eliminate jobs from the rural economy,โ€ they write.

 

โ€œThe EPA on January 24, 2024 published its proposed changes to the Effluent Limitations Guidelines (ELGs) for Meat and Poultry Products (MPPs). The guidelines apply to wastewater discharged by meat and poultry processors and renderers, as defined in a Clean Water Act program,โ€ the senators reveal in a statement.

 

โ€œThe revisions EPA has put forward consist of three options, impacting between 844 and 1,618 facilities. Currently, MPP ELG guidelines affect just 180 facilities. Per EPA, this proposed regulation could close 16 MPP facilities under Option 1, 22 under Option 2 and 53 under Option 3. MPP processors support rural jobs and are key links in the national food supply chain.,โ€ they add.

 

โ€œThe 60-day comment period on the rule closes March 25th. EPA has announced it does not plan to issue an extension. Such a tight window does not give stakeholders adequate time to submit meaningful feedback,โ€ the senators note.

 

In addition to Senators Fischer and Ernst, the letter was signed by U.S. Senators Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), James Risch (R-Idaho), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), James Lankford (R-Okla.), and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.).

 

In the House, the letter was led by U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (R-Kan.). In addition to Representative Mann, the letter was signed by U.S. Representatives Glenn โ€œGTโ€ Thompson (R- Pa.), Steve Womack (R-Ark.), Austin Scott (R-Ga.), Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.), Don Bacon (R-Neb.), Ron Estes (R-Kan.), James Baird (R-Ind.), Pete Stauber (R-Minn.), Dan Meuser (R-Pa.), Jake LaTurner (R-Kan.), Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa), Ronny Jackson (R-Texas), Mary Miller (R-Ill.), Brad Finstad (R-Minn.), Mike Flood (R-Neb.), and Mark Alford (R-Mo.).

 

The lawmakers are backed in their effort by the American Association of Meat Processors, the North American Renderers Association and the North American Meat Institute.

The first Black leader of a European nation has made history more than once during a rocky political career to date

 

Vaughan Gething describes himself as โ€œa Welshman born in Zambiaโ€ , with his father, a vet from the Vale of Glamorgan in south Wales, having met his mother, a Zambian chicken farmer, while he was working in southern Africa.

 

His parents experienced racism when the family moved to Britain and Gething joined the Labour party at the age of 17 after being inspired by articles about Nelson Mandela he read in on his newspaper round.

 

He studied at Aberystwyth and Cardiff universities, became the first Black president of the National Union of Students Wales and went on to work as a trade union lawyer.

 

Gething, who turned 50 on Friday, made history in 2013 when he became the first Black minister in any of the devolved nations. He then rose up the ministerial ladder and has worked as the health and, most recently, the economy minister.

 

The path has been rocky at times. He was the health minister during the Covid crisis and was criticised when he was pictured eating chips in a park with his family during lockdown. He insisted he had not broken the rules, but โ€œchipgateโ€ was damaging.

 

This week he had a difficult time at the UK Covid inquiry when he admitted all his WhatsApp messages from during the pandemic had vanished when his Senedd phone underwent a โ€œsecurity rebuildโ€.

 

In an interview with the Guardian, Gething said he wanted to be judged not on his skin colour but on his ability.

 

But, he said: โ€œYou canโ€™t deny the historic nature of it. I think I should win because Iโ€™m the best candidate. Iโ€™ve got loads of experience. Iโ€™ve got values rooted in our movement. I was a trade union shop steward, Wales TUC [Trades Union Congress] president, had 10 years as an employment lawyer and I have a vision for the future. But if I win, the fact that Iโ€™ll be the first Black leader of any European nation is a matter of historic significance.โ€

 

His importance as a role model was highlighted last September when he made an emotional visit to Birmingham, Alabama, to represent Wales at the 60th anniversary of the racist bombing of the 16th Street Baptist church in which four Black girls were killed. The people of Wales raised money for a stained glass window depicting a Black Christ to be installed as part of the churchโ€™s restoration.

 

Gething said when he got up to speak (having rehearsed for the daunting moment in a Greek Orthodox church in Cardiff), there was an audible gasp. โ€œEven in Birmingham, Alabama, a very Black city, they didnโ€™t expect someone who looked like me to stand up from Wales,โ€ he said.

 

As part of his leadership campaign, Gething pledged to set up the Mari Rees fund, named in honour of a Black Welsh Labour candidate for the Senedd elections in 2011.

 

โ€œShe died a month before the election. She would have been fantastic. The fund will pay for training and development for Black, Asian and minority ethnic members to help them progress within Labour and stand in elections,โ€ he said. โ€œI think our Senedd needs to do more to look like our country.โ€

 

Gething is not a Welsh speaker but he is learning. โ€œI think it would be great to have a learner in the first ministerโ€™s office,โ€ he said. โ€œWe have this target of reaching a million Welsh speakers. To get to a million we need more people like me, people who are learning, showing the language is really there for all of us, itโ€™s not there to exclude people. Itโ€™s something for all of us to be proud of.โ€

One of Gethingโ€™s key jobs this year will be to lead Welsh Labour into the general election. Wales is a Labour stronghold but a key Welsh Labour message for years has been that it will protect the country from the Conservatives. This tactic doesnโ€™t work when Keir Starmer is expected to become prime minister so a new strategy will be needed.

 

Major challenges

 

The Welsh population is older, poorer and sicker than that of England. The cost of living crisis is biting deeply and Gething will need to work hard on boosting the economy and protecting the most vulnerable people. Health and education are devolved issues. The Tories will increase their attacks on Labourโ€™s management of these areas in Wales in the run-up to the election. Waiting lists are long, school results have been disappointing. There is much to do.

 

Sensitive issues

 

Two of the former leader Mark Drakefordโ€™s most controversial policies will continue to trouble the new first minister. A record number of people have signed a petition against the 20mph speed limit policy. And farmers will continue to challenge the Welsh governmentโ€™s environmental policies, which they see as an assault on their way of life and the countryside.

Mercury slammed by gargantuan eruption from the sun's hidden far side, possibly triggering 'X-ray auroras'

A gigantic, fiery eruption around 40 times wider than Earth recently exploded from the sun's hidden far side. The eruption hurled a massive cloud of plasma into space that later smashed into Mercury, scouring the planet's rocky surface and potentially triggering "X-ray auroras" on the unprotected world.

 

The eruption was likely triggered by a powerful solar flare, which occurred around 7 p.m. ET on March 9, Spaceweather.com reported. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spotted a large, partially obscured plasma filament exploding outward from behind the sun's northeast limb. Based on the amount of visible plasma, the eruption likely spanned around 310,000 miles (500,000 kilometers) across.

 

SDO data showed that the explosion, which likely left behind a massive "canyon of fire" on the sun's surface, also released a large coronal mass ejection (CME) โ€” a fast-moving cloud of magnetized plasma and radiation โ€” that collided with Mercury on March 10.

 

Mercury is often blasted with CMEs due to its proximity to our home star. The small planet has no atmosphere left as a result of this bombardment and is fully exposed to the full force of these solar storms.

 

When electrons from CMEs hit Mercury's unprotected surface, they rapidly slow down. This deceleration causes the particles to release energy in the form of X-rays, which scientists can detect from Earth. The result is an aurora-like phenomenon that is visible in X-rays rather than visible light.

 

The gigantic eruption is the latest sign that the explosive peak of the sun's roughly 11-year solar cycle, known as solar maximum, may have already begun โ€” much earlier than originally forecast.

 

During solar maximum, solar flares and other types of solar storms erupt more frequently and more powerfully as the sun's magnetic field weakens and eventually flips over. Scientists are already seeing signs of this happening.

 

In the last month, researchers have seen some of the biggest solar storms of the current cycle, including a monster X-class flare โ€” the most powerful for more than six years โ€” and a plume of plasma 15 times taller than Earth, which erupted from the sun's south pole.

 

One of the biggest concerns during solar maximum is that researchers can't properly monitor the far side of the sun, which can harbor giant sunspots that unleash surprise solar storms, like the one that just hit Mercury. It's possible that these sunspots could swing round to face Earth as the sun rotates, exposing our planet to flares and CMEs. For example, in January 2023, a hidden sunspot spat out an X-class flare without warning that narrowly avoided Earth.

 

One secret weapon NASA has up its sleeve to prevent being caught out by these unseen dark patches is the Perseverance rover, which can sometimes spy on the sun's far side from its home on Mars. But this only works when Earth and Mars are located on opposite sides of the sun.

SpaceX launches 6,000th Starlink satellite on Friday night flight

SpaceX tied its rocket-reuse record on Friday (March 15), while placing its 6,000th Starlink internet satellite into Earth orbit.

 

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying 23 more of the company's Starlink satellites launched at 8:21 p.m. EDT (0021 GMT March 16) at NASAโ€™s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

 

It was the 19th liftoff for this Falcon 9's first stage, according to a SpaceX mission description. That tied a mark set this past December and matched for the first time last month.

 

To plan, the Falcon 9's first stage came back to Earth about 8.5 minutes after liftoff, landing on the droneship "A Shortfall of Gravitas," which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

 

The Falcon 9's upper stage continued hauling the 23 Starlink satellites to low Earth orbit, where they were to be released about 65.5 minutes after liftoff.

 

Extensive rocket reuse is a key priority for SpaceX and its founder and CEO, Elon Musk. Indeed, the company's next-generation vehicle, called Starship, is designed to be fully and rapidly reusable, a breakthrough that Musk thinks will make Mars settlement economically feasible.

 

The launch on Friday follows SpaceX's mostly-successful third test flight of Starship, which lifted off from the company's Starbase site in South Texas. That mission launched on Thursday morning.

Pfizer is pushing to be more involved in cancer drugs after a turbulent year marked by the rapid decline of its COVID business.

During a four-hour investor event last week, Pfizer pushed its initative to โ€œaccelerate breakthroughs that help people with cancer globally live better and longer lives,โ€ according to CNBC.

 

The drugmaker has ramped up its efforts to โ€œoutdo cancerโ€ since it acquired oncology biotech firm Seagen for $43 billion in December.

 

The acquisition doubled Pfizerโ€™s cancer drug pipeline to 60 different experimental programs, CNBC reported, while the company has said that it can produce at least eight blockbuster medicines by 2030 โ€” up from just five today.

 

It wasnโ€™t immediately clear which drugs Pfizer believes could offer up the potential to โ€œoutdo cancer.โ€

 

Analysts have advised that it will take a few years for some of the companyโ€™s cancer drugs that are currently in mid-stage decelopment to show pivotal clinical trial data and become less risky, according to CNBC.

FAA to oversee investigation of SpaceX Starship's 3rd test flight

For the third time in 11 months, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating a flight of SpaceX's Starship megarocket.

 

Starship launched for the third time ever on Thursday (March 14), roaring into the skies from SpaceX's Starbase site in South Texas. The company aimed to bring both of Starship's elements โ€” its first-stage Super Heavy booster and its Starship upper stage โ€” down to Earth for ocean landings, but both vehicles ended up breaking apart in the atmosphere.

 

The test flight therefore qualifies as a mishap, and the FAA wants to know what happened. The agency announced this morning (March 15) that it will oversee a SpaceX-led investigation into Thursday's events.

 

The 400-foot-tall (122 meters) Starship, which SpaceX is developing to carry people and cargo to the moon and Mars, flew for the first time in April 2023, on a test flight that lasted just four minutes.

 

It took to the skies again in November, notching several important milestones, including a successful stage separation. But that second trial mission ended after just eight minutes.

 

The FAA oversaw SpaceX investigations into both of those flights. The first probe identified 63 corrective actions that the company needed to take before launching again, and the second found 17 required fixes.

 

The number will likely be lower still for flight number three, given how much progress Starship made. For example, Super Heavy aced its "boostback" burn after separating from the upper stage, though the giant booster failed to execute its landing burn properly and broke apart about 1,515 feet (462 meters) above the Gulf of Mexico.

 

The Starship upper stage reached orbital velocity and hit its proper "coast" trajectory, on its way to a planned splashdown in the Indian Ocean. The vehicle was rolling a bit as it reentered Earth's atmosphere, however, and broke apart about 50 minutes after launch.

 

It's unclear when the fourth Starship test flight will take place; the FAA will not consider granting a launch license until the current mishap investigation is over and SpaceX has implemented the required corrective actions, whatever those end up being. But it's safe to assume that SpaceX will be ready to fly when it gets the green light.

 

"Today, we do have four ships and four Super Heavy boosters built, with more coming off the production line as our star factory continues to grow," Siva Bharadvaj, a space operations engineer at SpaceX, said during a webcast of Thursday's launch.

 

"These vehicles are slated for future flight tests just like today's," he added. "In fact, just this week, we static-fired our next ship that's planning to fly and expect to test the booster as soon as the launch mount is free from today's flight test."

I drove from Chicago to downstate IL to go to a Trump rally with my nephew during the 2020 election. It was a blast and it helped to awaken my 20 something year old nephew. I made this gif when we got back home from video we took. Getting a (you) from Trump was pretty awesome. It seems so long ago and I never thought at that time we would still be where we are today. I redpilled the crap out of him on the way there and back. I see him today and he is very discouraged. I tell him it has to be this way but even I question WTF is going on. The only thing that could make sense of all of this is that 1000X more people would be dead or dying from a civil or world war and this long game prevetned that but some of this toothpaste will never go back into the tube no matter what happens. I am grateful all my faith is in God and If I didn't have that I would have lost my sanity by now.

Scientists reveal never-before-seen map of the Milky Way's central engine

The Milky Way is our home galaxy, but how well do we actually know it? As part of a NASA-funded project, a team led by Villanova University researchers has obtained a never-before-seen view of the central engine at the heart of our galaxy.

 

The new map of this central region of the Milky Way, which took four years to assemble, reveals the relationship between magnetic fields at the heart of our galaxy and the cold dust structures that dwell there. This dust forms the building blocks of stars, planets, and, ultimately, life as we know it. The central engine of the Milky Way drives this process.

 

That means a clearer picture of dust and magnetic interactions builds a better understanding of the Milky Way and our place within it. The team's findings also have implications beyond our galaxy, offering glimpses of how dust and magnetic fields interact in the central engines of other galaxies

 

Understanding how stars and galaxies form and evolve is a vital part of the origin story of life โ€” but, until now, the interaction of dust and magnetic fields in this process has been somewhat overlooked, especially within our own galaxy.

 

"The center of the Milky Way and most of the space between stars is filled with a lot of dust, and this is important for our galaxy's life cycle," David Chuss, research team leader and a physics professor at Villanova University, told Space.com. "What we looked at was light emitted from these cool dust grains produced by heavy elements forged in stars and dispersed when those stars die and explode."

 

A complicated picture of Milky Way magnetic fields

In the heart of the Milky Way exists a region called the central molecular zone, which is packed with an estimated 60 million solar masses of dust. This vast reservoir of dust has a temperature of around minus 432.7 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 258. 2 degrees Celsius). That's just a few degrees above absolute zero (minus 460 Fahrenheit), the hypothetical temperature at which all atomic movement would cease.

 

Also located at the heart of the Milky Way is hotter gas that has been stripped of its electrons, or "ionized," and exists as a state of matter called "plasma."

 

"Radio wave observations of this region have these beautiful vertical elements in them that trace magnetic fields in the hot, ionized plasma component of the center of the Milky Way," Chuss said. "We tried to figure out what relationship this has to the cool dust component.

 

The team also wanted to know how this cool dust aligns with the magnetic fields at the heart of the Milky Way, which would also reveal how these magnetic fields are orientated. Such orientation is referred to as their "polarization."

 

Chuss and colleagues received funding from NASA to investigate this dusty central zone using the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), which was a telescope that circled the globe at an altitude of 45,000 feet (13,716 meters) aboard a Boeing 747 plane.

 

The project's Far-Infrared Polarimetric Large Area CMZ Exploration (FIREPLACE) created an infrared map that spans around 500 light-years across the center of the Milky Way over nine flights.

 

Using measurements of the polarization of the radiation emitted from dust that is aligned with magnetic fields, the intricate structure of those magnetic fields themselves was inferred by the team. This was then overlaid onto a three-color map that shows warm dust with a pink hue and cool dust clouds in blue. The image also shows radio-wave-emitting filaments in yellow.

 

"This is a journey, not a destination, but what we've found is this is a very complicated thing. The directions of the magnetic field vary all across the clouds at the center of the Milky Way," Chuss explained. "This is the first step in trying to figure out how the field that we see in the radiowaves across these large organized filaments may relate to the rest of the dynamics of the center of the Milky Way."

 

Chuss explained that this complicated picture of magnetic fields was something that he and the FIREPLACE team had expected to see with the new SOFIA map; the observations agreed with smaller-scale infrared and radio wave observations previously made of the heart of the Milky Way. Where this new map, however, really comes into its own is the sheer scale. It manages to reveal some never-before mapped regions. The fine detail woven into it is stunning as well.

A Georgia Senate hearing has confirmed Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis met with Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House before she indicted former president Donald Trump, a lawyer said.
