US soldier sentenced to nearly 4 years in Russian penal colony for theft

 

A U.S. Army spokesperson said Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, 34, was not authorized to travel to Russia when he was taken into custody.

 

A Russian court has sentenced a United States soldier to nearly four years in a penal colony after he was convicted of theft.

 

Army Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, 34, was arrested in the eastern city of Vladivostok, Russia, early last month and was charged with theft after allegedly stealing about $100 from a woman he was visiting. Black reportedly said he needed the money to pay for food and a hotel, but paid her back the next day.

 

Army spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith informed Scripps News that Black was most recently stationed in South Korea and was scheduled to return home to Cavazos, Texas, while on permanent change-of-station leave. However, instead of returning to the U.S., Smith said Black traveled through China into Russia for "personal reasons."

 

Smith added that Black did not receive permission from the military to go to China or Russia and that travel to both countries is currently restricted under the Department of Defense Foreign Clearance Guide. Smith said the Army notified Black's family of his arrest shortly after Russian officials informed the U.S. embassy in Moscow.

Dem-majority FCC helping George Soros fast-track takeover of nationwide radio network: ‘This is scary’June 18, 2024

Left-leaning billionaire George Soros is trying to recruit the Democrat-controlled Federal Communications Commission to help fast track his takeover of the nation’s second-biggest radio network. Soros, 93,pumped $400 million into Audacy in February, a network which reaches 165 million monthly listenersand includes a handful of conservative shows from hosts including Sean Hannity, Dana Loesch, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck and Erick Erickson.

But their influence is likely to be muted if the billionaire takes over and imposes his agenda, as has happened with other media acquisitions. A source with knowledge of the deal told The Post: “The idea that George Soros is buying hundreds of local radio stations right before a national election and will keep broadcasting Sean Hannity and other conservative talk radio hosts on Audacy is not credible.”

However, to take control Soros Fund Management needs help from the FCC as the money funneled into buying the bankrupt network comes from abroad.

Under existing FCC rules, foreign company ownership of US radio stations is not allowed to exceed 25% — but a filing acquired by The Post details Soros’ asking the commission to make an exception. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr is raising an alarm that was first set off by Texas Congressman Chip Roy (R-Texas) in April.

“The FCC should not create a special Soros shortcut,” Carr told The Post this week. “When it comes to a broadcast station acquisition of this size and magnitude – hundreds of radio stations across more than 45 markets – the FCC needs to run its full and normal review process. “The FCC should not be skipping steps or waiving required agency processes.”

Roy had earlier written the Soros group would usually petition to get its foreign funding sources vetted by the FCC first, but that they are trying to waive that process and put it off “until sometime down the road — indicating that those foreign stakeholders will be given ‘special warrants’ in the meantime,” Roy wrote in late April. The FCC did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.

In the past two years, Soros Fund Management — a rep for which said they do not comment on ongoing transactions — has made big moves into American radio. It brokered Univision’s $60 million sale in 2022 of 18 mostly conservative Hispanic radio stations including right-wing powerhouse Radio Mambi. That same year, Soros invested another chunk of cash into the liberal podcast network Crooked Media, home of “Pod Save America.”

Audacy is the nation’s second-biggest radio network after the iHeart network with 220 stations including New York’s WFAN and 1010 WINS, as well as Los Angeles-based KROQ, according to bankruptcy filings. Sources told The Post Soros’s stake is equal to about 40% of the company’s senior debt — a massive chunk which, although not a majority, could yield effective control of the media giant when it emerges from bankruptcy.

The timing of the deal, just months before the 2024 presidential election, has raised eyebrows. One insider, noting he is a Republican, said he felt it possible Soros was buying the stake to exert influence on public opinion in leading up to the election.

“This is scary,” the source said at the time.

In June 2022, the Soros-backed Latino Media Network bought Mambí — a mainstay of Miami’s hardline anti-Communist Cuban exile community for decades — and 17 other Spanish-language radio stations from TelevisaUnivision in an estimated $60 million deal.

The newly-formed network was run by two former Democratic operatives, Stephanie Valencia and Jess Morales Rocketto, who worked on Barack Obama’s and Hillary Clinton’s political campaigns. Valencia also worked in the Obama White House.

Venezuelan-born former Radio Mambí host Lourdes Ubieta quit the station after she learned of the takeover that summer. Ironically, Ubieta now hosts a conservative Spanish-language radio show, “En Este Pais con Lourdes Ubieta,” on Radio Libre 790 on the Audacy network in Miami, created after the demise of the old Radio Mambi. Ubieta cannot comment on her current job but told The Post the Latin Media Network, which did not respond to The Post’s request for comment, essentially neutralized Radio Mambi by shutting down all the political content at the station. “They kept the name Radio Mambi but they made it all soft shows like sports and entertainment,” Ubieta told The Post. “Everything was hard-core anti-Communism politics on Radio Mambi before. That’s all gone now.”

Axios, yet another arm of the Biden regime’s media machine, has dropped an article that’s raising an eyebrow or two. Many are calling it a piece of “predictive programming”—a sneak peek into a potential deep-state false flag designed to disrupt the 2024 election. Honestly, you can’t blame people for being on edge. Our three-letter intel agencies have completely lost the trust of the American public by targeting, harassing, and imprisoning political dissidents who refuse to toe the progressive line. Plus, we’ve all seen the CIA and others orchestrate plenty of “false flags” in foreign countries to meddle with their elections. It makes sense that they’d employ those same seasoned tactics right here at home, doesn’t it? The Axios piece is titled, “U.S. faces “serious threat” of a terror attack, expert and former CIA chief warn.” Is this the same former CIA chief who wrote and signed the letter claiming Hunter’s laptop was Russian disinformation?

Yeah, it’s the same guy.

 

Mr. Morell is back at it—is he teeing up another election home run for the regime?

Alarmed by repeated warnings from top FBI and military officials, a former acting CIA director and a legendary foreign policy thinker write bluntly in Foreign Affairs: “The United States faces a serious threat of a terrorist attack in the months ahead.”

 

Why it matters: Michael Morell and Graham Allison write that there are striking echoes of the run-up to 9/11 — including warnings about Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda by then-CIA director George Tenet.

 

Now, similar warnings are popping up from FBI director Chris Wray and Army Gen. Erik Kurilla — the commander of CENTCOM, which includes the Middle East.

 

Between the lines: Repeated warnings of this sort from national security officials and experts in the two decades since 9/11 have not come to fruition.

 

Over that time, terrorism has faded as a national fixation.

We’ve been covering Biden’s next likely political move for some time now. Steve Bannon and Senator Tuberville both agree that Biden will use WWIII to stay in power. Also, Revolver’s own Darren Beattie has pointed out that the left is in full-blown panic because their sham lawfare trials, meant to be Biden’s ace in the hole, are unraveling. Just think that the ludicrous Stormy Daniels trial was supposed to be the 2024 equivalent of COVID, pinning President Trump against the ropes. What an epic failure that was. So, with this “ace” turning out to be a flop—a colossal miscalculation—the Dems must be at their most desperate yet. You have to wonder: What will they try next in this state of utter panic?

Traditionally, a terror attack or a false flag might be used to rally support for the incumbent, but with Biden’s glaring mental lapses (sometimes bordering on unconsciousness), a “false flag” scenario might actually shine a spotlight on just how incapacitated he is, making him a liability rather than a beacon of hope and strength. However, don’t sigh in relief just yet—the fact that Biden’s potential terror “false flag” might backfire doesn’t guarantee they won’t try it. The debacle of putting all their eggs in the Stormy Daniels basket just shows how prone Biden’s handlers are to severe miscalculations.

Speaking at a Turning Point USA event in Detroit on Saturday, Bannon singled out Attorney GeneralMerrick Garland, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, and Special Counsel Jack Smith.

 

Trump, who was convicted in New York last month of falsifying business records, is under federal indictment in two jurisdictions, where he faces charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election and retaining classified documents after leaving office. The former president has also been indicted in Georgia for trying to overturn the election results in the state. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts.

 

Trump has said he will seek “retribution” for what he calls his “persecution” at the hands of President Joe Biden and the Department of Justice. Biden has said he has no involvement. Meanwhile, Biden’s Department of Justice has secured a conviction of his son Hunter Biden on federal gun charges. The younger Biden is also set to stand trial in Los Angeles on tax felonies.

 

For his part, Bannon is scheduled to report to prison on July 1 after being convicted of contempt of Congress. He had ignored a subpoena issued by the House Jan. 6 select committee.

 

On Sunday’s Alex Witt Reports on MSNBC, the host played a clip of Bannon’s remarks the night before.

 

“We’re coming after Lisa Monaco, Merrick Garland, the senior members of DOJ that are prosecuting President Trump,” Bannon told the crowd. “Jack Smith. And this is not about vengeance. This is not about revenge. This is not about retribution. This is about saving this republic! We’re gonna use the Constitution and the rule of law to go after you and hold you accountable.”

 

Alex Witt turned to former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance for her reaction.

 

“How chilling is it that Steve Bannon is naming names?”the host asked.

NASA delays Starliner return a few more days to study data

NASA and Boeing will take an additional four days to review all available data about the performance of the Starliner spacecraft before clearing the vehicle to return to Earth, officials said Tuesday.

Based on the new schedule, which remains pending ahead of final review meetings later this week, Starliner would undock at 10:10 pm ET on Tuesday, June 25, from the International Space Station (02:10 UTC on June 26).

This would set up a landing at 4:51 ET on June 26 (08:51 UTC) at the White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico.

During a news conference on Tuesday, the program manager for NASA's Commercial Crew Program, Steve Stich, said the four-day delay in the spacecraft's return would "give our team a little bit more time to look at the data, do some analysis, and make sure we're really ready to come home."

 

Working two major issues

NASA is still trying to clear two major hardware issues that occurred during the spacecraft's flight to the International Space Station nearly two weeks ago:

five separate leaks in the helium system that pressurizes Starliner's propulsion system and the failure of five of the vehicle's 28 reaction-control system thrusters as Starliner approached the station.

Since then, engineers from NASA and Boeing have been studying these two problems.

They took an important step toward better understanding both on Saturday, June 15, when Starliner was powered up for a thruster test.

 

During this test, engineers found that helium leak rates inside Starliner's Service Module were lower than the last time the vehicle was powered on.

Although the precise cause of the leak is not fully understood—it is possibly due to a seal in the flange between the thruster and manifold—the lower leak rate gave engineers confidence they could manage the loss of helium.

Even before this decrease in the leak, Starliner had large reserves of helium, officials said. The test of the reaction control system thrusters also went well, Stich said. Four of the five thrusters operated normally, and they are expected to be available for the undocking of Starliner later this month.

These thrusters, which are fairly low-powered, are primarily used for small maneuvers. They will also be needed for the de-orbit burn that will set Starliner on its return path to Earth. Starliner can perform this burn without a full complement of thrusters, but Stich did not say how many could be safely lost.

 

First operational mission when?

NASA is being cautious about Starliner because this is the first crewed flight of the vehicle, which NASA funded to provide transportation services to the International Space Station.

The goal is to provide regular flights of four astronauts to the space station for six-month rotations. This initial test flight, carrying NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, is intended to provide data to certify the vehicle for operational missions.

The first opportunity for Boeing to fly one of these operational missions is early 2025, likely in February or March. NASA will soon need to decide whether to give this slot to Starliner or SpaceX's Dragon vehicle for the Crew-10 mission—NASA's 10th operational flight on Dragon.

 

Given the technical problems that cropped up on the current test flight, it seems likely that NASA will push Starliner's operational mission to the next available slot, likely in August or September of 2025.

However, Stich said Tuesday no decision has been made and that NASA needs to study the results of this test flight. "We haven't looked too much ahead to Starliner-1," he said.

"We've got to go address the helium leaks. We're not gonna go fly another mission like this with the helium leaks, and we've got to go understand what the rendezvous profile is doing that's causing the thrusters to have low thrust, and then be deselected by the flight control team."

Although Starliner's first crewed flight has challenged NASA and Boeing, Stich said the process has not been frustrating. “I would not characterize it as frustration," he said Tuesday. "I would characterize it as learning.”

Swing-state Nevada’s dirty voter rolls include hundreds of suspect addresses, at bars, strip clubs, empty parking lots, and other commercial addresses, according to an investigation by the Public Interest Legal Foundation. Doing so is clearly against the law.

“In Nevada, by the state law, you are required to be registered where you actually live, where you sleep. Not where you work, not at a P.O. Box. So we’re trying to get elections officials to enforce the law,” Lauren Bis, PILF’s director of communication and engagement, says in a video tracking bad addresses in the Las Vegas area.

To that end, the foundation has filed a petition in Washoe County, Nevada’s second-most populous county, to force elections officials to investigate and fix commercial addresses on the voter roll. PILF investigators found addresses on the rolls reported as liquor stores, empty lots, and even the Nevada Gaming Control Board, among others.

Elias Law Group and a band of leftists have sought to intervene in PILF’s petition for a writ of mandamus, arguing that forcing Washoe election administrators to follow the law and clean up the county’s dirty voter rolls will “threaten” voting rights.

The would-be intervenors claim that their members and constituents would be forced to “expend substantial resources to educate voters and protect them from baseless attacks on their eligibility.”

As The Federalist recently reported, Bis was greeted with a lot of quizzical looks from employees at the casinos, fast-food restaurants, retailers, post offices, funeral homes, strip clubs, tattoo parlors, and jails where registered voters — at least according to Nevada’s dirty voter rolls — “resided.” What PILF found was equal parts sad and hilarious, foundation President J. Christian Adams told me on “The Federalist Radio Hour.”

The election integrity public interest law firm tracked data from the Nevada secretary of state’s office, which in the 2022 midterm elections reported 95,556 ballots sent to undeliverable, or “bad,” addresses. PILF investigators documented commercial addresses purported to be the residences of registered voters, confirming on video that the individuals did not live where they reported residing.

“We’ve been to all of the locations. It’s not some data exercise we see sitting at a computer in Chicago. We’ve actually got boots on the ground looking for the voters, and they don’t exist,” Adams said.

It’s almost as amusing as Elias and friends’ apparent efforts to stop election officials from following the law under the absurd premise of voter rights. Their court filing offers a dire warning about what will happen if Washoe County is required to do what PILF has done: Washoe County’s job.

“If the Court grants such relief, Respondent Burgess — and other clerks and registrars across the state — will be flooded with third-party demands to investigate all manner of alleged peculiarities in the voter rolls, based on unsourced, unverified, and unsworn information,” the court filing admonishes. “Petitioners are not the only ones making such demands. Nevada is in the midst of a storm of baseless efforts by third parties to force election officials to undertake a rushed purge of registered voters before the November election.”

Adams called Elias’ latest lawfare stunt a “cry wolf exercise.”

“He does this all over the country. He spools up these progressive astroturf organizations and they file a legal brief, which they have done in our case, which we have to respond to, that says, ‘Oh, if you listen to these evil conservatives, there will be eligible people improperly removed from the rolls.’ Nonsense,” said Adams, who formerly served in the Voting Section at the U.S. Department of Justice and was appointed to President Trump’s Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.

Air Force Civilian Employees at Cyber Command Transfer to the U.S. Army

Troops who were given low to moderate memory tasks reportedly displayed twice the improvement in endurance and performance compared to those who were assigned very easy brain tasks.

 

This positive result has motivated researchers at the Army Medical Research and Development Command to consider applying the approach on a broader basis and with high-intensity intervals.

 

The proposed brain exercise is said to closely mimic the Army Combat Fitness Test but with focus on cognitive training.

The full moon of June, also called the Strawberry Moon, will occur on June 21 at 9:08 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (0108 UTC June 22), according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Observers in Oceania will see a nearly full moon pass in front of the star Antares, Alpha Scorpii, the brightest star in Scorpius, the Scorpion, on June 20.

 

In New York City, moonrise will occur at 8:49 p.m. EDT on June 21. The sun will set at 8:31 p.m. EDT on that day.

This full moon happens on the day after the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year; full moons occur within a day of the solstices about every 19 to 20 years.

There's some dispute about what counts as a full moon falling "on the solstice" – it depends on how close in time one wants the two phenomena to be.

For example, the Summer Solstice in 2024 is counted as occurring at 4:05 p.m. EDT on June 20, and the full moon is a little more than 30 hours later.

 

The moon will pass in front of – or occult – Antares the day before the full moon, but the event won't be visible from New York.

North American sky watchers will see a very close pass of the moon just to the south of, or "below," Antares.

 

A full moon happens when the moon is opposite the sun with the Earth between the two. On the night side of Earth, that's when viewers can see a fully illuminated moon.

Full moons are reckoned relative to the positions of the moon and Earth; the timing of a full moon is the same all over the world, meaning any perceived differences in such timing are solely due to one's time zone.

While the moon turns full at 9:08 p.m. EDT in New York, for a London-based sky the full moon occurs at 1:08 a.m. local time the next day, and a Japan-based observer would see it happen at 9:08 a.m. local time.

 

While many around the world will only see the moon closely passing Antares, those located in a swath of the Pacific Ocean will see the moon pass in front of the star, which is the brightest in the constellation Scorpius, the Scorpion.

One of the larger cities this occultation will be visible from is Port Moresby, in Papua New Guinea, where one can see the moon touch Antares on June 21 at 8:10 p.m. local time, according to In-the-sky.org, and Antares will appear to emerge from behind the moon at 8:34 p.m.

 

Other places where one can see the occultation include Suva, in Fiji, where Antares passes behind the moon June 21 at 11:04 p.m. local time and emerges at 12:21 a.m. local time on June 22.

Unlike lunar phases, spotting occultations is affected by one's location. In the case of occultations by the moon, our natural satellite is close enough that moving from one part of the Earth's surface to another can alter the moon's apparent position against the stars by up to two degrees.

So, an observer in Honolulu, which is further north than Fiji or the Solomon Islands, will see the moon pass just to the south of Antares, in close conjunction at about 1:33 a.m. local time on June 21;

the moon will pass about 0.3 degrees south of the star, less than a single lunar diameter (the moon is so bright that Antares can be hard to spot so close by).

Other regions will be on the day side of Earth, so the Moon wouldn't have risen yet or will have set already when the occultation occurs.

Space industry group warns of escalating cyber threats, outmatched defenses

The commercial space industry is facing an onslaught of cyber attacks and other threats, but lacks the resources and coordination to adequately defend itself, the head of the Space Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC) warned June 18.

“Every week we’re recording over 100 attacks against critical infrastructure related to space systems,” Erin Miller, executive director of Space ISAC, said on a webcast hosted by the National Security Space Association.

Most space companies would have a difficult time defending against well-orchestrated cyber attacks by a nation state, she said.

The Space ISAC is a non-profit organization that analyzes and shares information on cyber threats and vulnerabilities related to space systems.

 

Space, terrestrial networks connected

Miller said space systems now face an expanding array of threats including jamming, suspicious satellite maneuvers and state-sponsored hacking campaigns. Space systems are closely connected with critical infrastructure in terrestrial networks, so the threats are serious, she said.

“When we look at what space systems are used for, it’s national security, the energy sector. our food supply chain, our aviation and our automotive industries. It’s everything that we rely on,” Miller said. Companies pay anywhere from $2,500 to $50,000 a year to be members of the Space ISAC.

The organization operates a “watch center” in Colorado Springs that monitors, analyzes data and alerts members about cyber threats, supply chain intrusions, space weather events and other risks based on intelligence provided by industry and government sources.

To better defend themselves, the ISAC urges companies to share information across the industry.

 

Russian cyber hacking has not stopped

The 2022 cyber attack on Viasat’s ground modems at the outset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a high-profile example of the risks facing the industry.

Miller said this type of malicious activity has not stopped, even if it hasn’t garnered major headlines.

“In order to defend our critical infrastructure against these activities and attacks, we have to work together,” Miller said. Publicly available sources of information are not enough, she added.

“The timely actionable information comes from when companies come together in a community and they’re viewing it as an attack against one is an attack against all, and that’s the only way to outmaneuver the adversary, in my opinion.”

 

Miller said she is seeing growing interest from the U.S. government in collaborating with industry on cyber defense for space systems.

“I won’t name all the agencies but over the last seven working days, there hasn’t been a day that I haven’t had a meeting with a U.S. government agency trying to figure out how to work more closely with the space industry and the global space community,” she said.

“This is a high priority right now,” Miller added. “And it doesn’t have to be done in a classified environment only. It can be done unclassified.”

The cyber threats that we’re seeing today are likely to evolve, she said. “Living-off-the-land attacks could evolve to living off the constellation,” she said, referring to a type of cyber attack where intruders leverage legitimate software and tools already present on the targeted system to carry out malicious activities, rather than introducing external malware, which makes these attacks hard to detect by traditional security solutions.

 

Lack of lead agency complicates response

Miller said one of the challenges is the lack of a lead federal agency responsible for coordinating incident response to cyber attacks targeting space assets.

With authorities fragmented across multiple agencies, getting government assistance can be complicated.

“It’s always interesting to see how companies decide how they’re going to engage with the government, or who they want to call,” Miller said. “And I think that’s a symptom of a broader problem.”

 

The Space ISAC has identified about 50 different government agencies that have space operations as part of their mission portfolios. But with responsibilities splintered, “when everyone is responsible, no one is responsible,” Miller noted.

During cyber wargaming exercises, companies can’t even agree on which agency they would contact first in a crisis, she noted.

“There should be a responsible party or responsible agency looking at sector risk management,” Miller said. The Space ISAC is coordinating some activities, “however, we’re not the U.S. government.”

The stakes are becoming even higher as consumer technologies like iPhones gain satellite connectivity, Miller said. “It’s easier to see how much our lives actually depend on the security of space systems.”

Biden’s pollster elaborates further, noting to allies that the messaging should be tied to a broader narrative accusing Trump of “being self-centered and unwilling to take responsibility for his actions.” POLITICO then provides Biden-aligned SuperPACs a look at the 81-year-old Democrat incumbent’s internal polling, noting that it mirrors that of the outlet’s Ipsos-conducted survey.

Process stories, like the one published by POLITICO, often occur when a campaign wants to shift messaging and alert its allies without overtly breaking the law. After noting that the Biden campaign’s initial strategy was to remain hands-off following Trump‘s conviction, the outlet states: “But even then, Biden aides privately noted they could always readjust their hands-off strategy if the ruling served to be more damaging down the road.” The strategic shift appears to be now taking place, and the very story covering it is also serving as the vehicle to alert Biden’s non-campaign affiliated groups.

Viktor Orban’s Hungary is taking over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) under the slogan ‘Make Europe Great Again.’ Orban is a longtime ally of Donald Trump, who repopularized the ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan first used by Ronald Reagan and a thorn in the side of the EU establishment.

 

“It is a reference to an active presidency,” said János Bóka, Orban’s Minister for European Affairs. “We are taking over in a very difficult environment: a war in our neighborhood, the threat of falling behind our global competitors, security concerns, illegal migration, natural disasters, climate change, and demographic challenges.”

Nato’s $1bn fund backs British start-up to build space factories

A British start-up that is preparing to launch robot factories into space has secured funding from the Nato alliance’s $1.1bn (£870m) investment fund.

Cardiff-based Space Forge wants to put satellites into orbit and use the low-gravity conditions to make crystals for cutting-edge microchips, as well as new medicines and super-alloys.

The satellites would be the first in the world to be reusable, returning to Earth by unfurling a “Mary Poppins-style” umbrella upon completing their task.

 

Nato said this was a prime example of “dual-use” technologies the alliance is trying to cultivate to maintain an edge over Russia and China.

Using the vacuum of space and low-gravity conditions, Space Forge can grow highly pure “seed” crystals that can be used to produce tens of millions of sophisticated microchips that run faster and use less energy back on Earth.

It opens the door to a 50pc improvement in radar range and satellites that are 30pc to 50pc smaller, among other things.

 

Space Forge has already partnered with American defence giant Northrop Grumman to develop chips that will enable more powerful radar systems.

Josh Western, the start-up’s chief executive, told The Telegraph: “What we tell people is that the next industrial revolution is not going to be here on Earth, it is going to be in space.

“It’s a really fundamental chemistry breakthrough.”

 

Space Forge is due to carry out a test run within the next 12 months to prove to regulators that the novel landing technology works, likely by sending the satellite up on a SpaceX rocket launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

It will then follow this with another mission to demonstrate that space-made crystals can be safely returned to Earth.

Ahead of the trial, investment provided by the Nato Innovation Fund is helping to finance construction of the Forgestar 2 platform, which will be used in the second test.

 

Space Forge lost a satellite last year that was meant to be launched into space by Virgin Orbit’s “Start Me Up” mission, which failed.

The announcement came as the Nato Innovation Fund revealed the first four businesses it is backing.

Member states of the alliance announced the fund in 2022 following Russia’s attack on Ukraine and tasked it with nurturing “nascent technologies that have the power to transform our security in the decades to come”.

 

Of the first four start-ups the fund has confirmed investments in, three are British.

Alongside Space Forge, they include Bristol-based carbon fibre specialist iCOMAT, London-based chip designer Fractile and Germany-based ARX Robotics, which makes unmanned ground vehicles.

Andrea Traversone, the fund’s managing partner, said: “Our mandate is to back disruptive technologies to support defence, security and resilience in the alliance and these four companies are all good examples of that.

 

“But the most important thing we want to do is help these companies get their technologies adopted by our investors, the 24 member nations.”

He said the fund was holding talks with hundreds of other start-ups about potential investments and expected to announce more such deals in the coming months and years.

The fund operates on a 15-year horizon but does not disclose the size of its investments.

When news breaks and the internet is aflutter with activity and speculation, many turn to open source accounts and experts to make sense of events. This is truly a sign that open source research — using resources like satellite images to flight tracking websites and footage recorded on the ground — is seen as credible and is increasingly sought after. It’s free, publicly available and anybody can do it.

But such success comes with drawbacks. In monitoring events from Iran and Ukraine, this surge in credibility allows the term ‘OSINT’ to be easily abused, either knowingly or unknowingly, by users who don’t actually follow the best practice of open source research methods. In fact, since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, there has been a spike in verified ‘OSINT’ Twitter accounts which create additional noise and confusion with poor open source analysis.

Conducting open source research properly isn’t about being ‘verified’ or having a huge following. It isn’t about expecting people to take your word for things. It’s about collaboration and sharing the skills necessary to independently verify what you see online. It’s about showing your working and the origin of your data so that anybody can replicate your methodology.

As Bellingcat’s Giancarlo Fiorella indicated in the Financial Times in December, open source research is critical in the long term when it could come to play a role in prosecuting those responsible for atrocity crimes. That raises the bar significantly — not just for the sake of the open source research community as a whole, but also for that of accountability for the victims of armed conflicts.

Here are a few mistakes we’ve noticed from open source researchers in recent years. Many examples are relevant to monitoring armed conflict, but could broadly apply to any genre on which open source research shines — such as natural disasters or organised crime.

We work in a young and rapidly evolving field, facing a deluge of information. Mistakes should be no cause for surprise or shame. Everybody makes them. But a good open source researcher is open about doing so – they correct their errors quickly and vow to do better next time.

If you’re a reader, looking out for these ‘Seven Sins’ (listed in no particular order of gravity) will help you independently judge the quality of open source research you encounter online. If you’re also an open source researcher, looking out for them will help improve the quality of your own work.

 

1. Not Providing the Original Source

The main tenet of open-source research is that it’s ‘open’: ideally the information is publicly accessible and used in a transparent way. This allows anyone to verify the sourcing and veracity of a piece of footage, without having to trust the person who posted it.

In the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many “OSINT aggregator” accounts developed large followings on Twitter, mostly reposting videos from Telegram, often without linking to the video’s original source. When someone posts a video without saying where they got it from, verification becomes much more difficult; researchers can’t just follow a chain of links to its origin. Without any clues as to who originally uploaded that video, we lose potentially crucial information about its content. Though most social media platforms strip metadata, for some platforms such as Telegram and Parler retain it. Such image metadata has played important roles in Bellingcat investigations on subjects from QAnon’s origins to Russian disinformation in Ukraine. This means that first instance of a photo or video may also contain metadata which is lost when the content is reuploaded, shared or compressed.

Bear in mind that there are circumstances when it can be ethically fraught to provide a link, such as if doing so would amplify hateful accounts or drive traffic to graphic content content. Nevertheless, a rule of thumb is to share when you can.

That’s because sharing the origin of a piece of content is a greater contribution than keeping it to yourself — the better to hoard future ‘discoveries’.

2. Letting Cheerleading Undermine Your Work

While everyone has bias, it’s important for open source researchers to attempt to separate these biases from the evidence that they examine. Though many open source researchers or communities clearly use these techniques in aid of a certain cause, they should still acknowledge when their sources or research don’t support that cause, and always be transparent about the level of uncertainty.

Confirmation bias is our tendency to accept as true any new information that confirms what we already ‘know’ to be true, and to reject new information that contradicts our beliefs. Just as everyone has bias, everyone is liable to fall victim to confirmation bias.

Nevertheless, the quality of open source research can be judged independently of political or social position. This is why the caveats are so important. Open source information doesn’t show everything, and may not prove whatever larger point you would like it to.

Acknowledging what you don’t know and what you can’t know is crucial for building trust — even if you have very clear and very public positions. Failing to do this can result in erroneous and self-serving investigations.

 

3. Not Archiving Material

Online content is often ephemeral: the internet is littered with links to pages that no longer exist. This could be because the owner of the web domain stopped paying their bills. It could be because the website changed how they organised pages. A content hosting platform could have decided to delete large amounts of their files, whether on purpose or by accident. Social media posts are often deleted, whether by the account who created the post, or by the social media platform’s moderation team.

That makes the work of open source researchers much more difficult. It’s why Bellingcat frequently emphasises the importance of archiving online content and has developed tools for making this easier.

The most trustworthy way to archive content is with third-party archiving platforms like the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine or archive.today, though they often fail to correctly archive content from several social media platforms, as well as videos in general. If all else fails, a screenshot is better than nothing.

 

4. Lacking Context for Occurrences, Common or Otherwise

Particularly in the context of conflict monitoring, events that occur on a regular basis are often taken out of their original context and overblown. For example, researchers unfamiliar with reading NASA FIRMS images and data, may interpret regular, planned and controlled fires or other thermal changes as something more malicious. But in moments of tension, people unfamiliar with such common events may give them undue significance.

A recent example of this trend was when famous baseball player Shohei Ohtani was going to join a new team, leaving the Los Angeles Angels. In December 2023, a private flight leaving Anaheim in the US state of California for Toronto, Canada spurred online sleuths to believe that this was evidence of Ohtani meeting and potentially signing with the Toronto Blue Jays. when In reality, the flight was carrying a Canadian businessman and had no connection to Ohtani or baseball in general.

Distinguishing between common and uncommon events can take a lot of domain-specific expertise, whether that field is conflict monitoring, natural disasters, or any other area of research. Many researchers do not have this specific expertise regardless of how well they have mastered a tool or method.

5. Incorrectly Using Tools and Interpreting Data

There are many different open source tools out there, and we even try to keep a list of useful resources in Bellingcat’s Online Investigation Toolkit. However, as with any new tool, users often need some guidance, experience and training to master it.

We often see new users not being aware of these tools’ limitations. New tools aren’t silver bullets and they often come with many caveats. For example, for facial recognition software, there are strengths and weaknesses for different services and results provided by those tools should not be treated with complete certainty. Usually other data points and context is required to show why the match is credible. Depending on the photo and the particular case, it is possible to pursue false leads and come to incorrect conclusions based on the limitations of that software.

Tools which detect photo manipulation are another example. Last May, Colombia’s president retweeted an account who had improperly used one such tools, drawing overconfident and incorrect conclusions.

Even when such tools have been mastered, it takes time to learn how to interpret the data or results they generate. In one example, drone footage of a fast moving object was interpreted as a UFO when in reality it may have just been a balloon.

In another, a user mistook clouds on satellite imagery for craters.

 

6. Editing Footage

While usually not done maliciously, OSINT accounts sometimes edit footage in an unhelpful way, such as placing an audio track over the video, making a compilation of clips, or trimming down the original footage.

For example, one habit of ‘aggregator’ accounts is to overlay their channel’s watermark over videos and images. If we can’t find the origin of a video, we generally perform a reverse image search of frames from the footage. But thanks to watermarks, this useful technique becomes more prone to error.

Example of a gratuitously watermarked image, based on a photo from a recent Bellingcat investigation into narco kingpin Christy Kinahan. This editing is only slightly exaggerated when compared to the watermarking practices of some users’ accounts. Such practices often make verification and image analysis more difficult.

When interpreting and sharing open source content, it is critical that we do not edit the footage in a way that diminishes, removes, or obscures useful information contained in that content. Even if you think you are not obscuring critical information, there is no way to know if the information you altered would be helpful later.

For example, the audio contained in the footage of the shooting of Columbian journalist Abelardo Liz contained vital clues that allowed us to geolocate where the gunfire came from. If this footage was edited over with a dramatic audio track, it would have concealed a vital component of this investigation.

 

7. Racing to be First at Any Cost

It is easy to get wrapped up in the whirlwind of breaking news, especially around terror attacks and military conflict. The incentives of social media platforms, where the bulk of public open source research is carried out, encourage this behaviour. There is a big temptation to be the first person to make a ‘breakthrough’ in a developing story, or to quickly generate an analysis on an event.

However, validating content should always take priority over speed.

Some of the most high-profile and damaging examples of this are the many times that amateur investigators misidentified innocent people as the perpetrators of terror attacks. This occurred recently with the Bondi Junction stabbing, as well as the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013 and the Allen, Texas mall shooting in 2023. These kinds of mistaken results have been based on the innocent person having the same name or a similar looking face as the perpetrator — neither of which is sufficient evidence alone given the gravity of such identifications.

Too often, verification gets overlooked when the desire for speed is prioritised which can create more harm and confusion about an unfolding situation rather than bringing the facts and clarity needed.

Ethics Committee investigating Gaetz over alleged drug use, sexual misconduct and more

 

The House Ethics Committee is continuing to review several allegations against Northwest Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, including that he engaged in sexual misconduct and illegal drug use.

 

In a release Tuesday, the committee said it will continue to review allegations that Gaetz may have "engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts, dispensed special privileges and favors to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct."

 

Gaetz has denied all the allegations.

 

He took to social media on Monday saying:

 

The House Ethics Committee has closed four probes into me, which emerged from lies intended solely to smear me. Instead of working with me to ban Congressional stock trading, the Ethics Committee is now opening new frivolous investigations. They are doing this to avoid the obvious fact that every investigation into me ends the same way: my exoneration.

Joe Biden and those seeking to ensure his re-election have their hands all over Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s prosecution of the former president.

 

In response to Americans’ outcry over the political prosecutions of Donald Trump and a Manhattan jury convicting the former president on 34 felony counts, President Joe Biden declared, “It’s irresponsible for anyone to say this was rigged, just because they don’t like the verdict.”Coming from the Commander-in-Rigging, this proclamation means nothing.

 

Biden and those seeking to ensure his re-election have their hands all over Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s prosecution of the former president. A lead prosecutor for Bragg during the trial was Matthew Colangelo. In December 2022, Colangelo left the Biden Department of Justice to “jump start” the criminal case against Trump. Biden had previously named Colangelo his acting associate attorney general—the third-highest-ranking official in the DOJ.

 

There’s Plenty More Where That Came From

Colangelo’s role in prosecuting his former boss’s political opponent provides the most obvious evidence of the Biden administration’s involvement in the Manhattan D.A.’s criminal targeting of Trump, but the rigging started much earlier. As I previously reported, theincestuous relationship between the Manhattan D.A.’s office and Team Biden began as early as mid-February 2021. Then, “Bragg’s predecessor, District Attorney Cyrus Vance, arranged for private criminal defense attorney and former federal prosecutor Mark Pomerantz to be a special assistant district attorney for the Manhattan D.A.’s office.”

 

As The New York Times reported at the time, Pomerantz was to work “solely on the Trump investigation” during a temporary leave of absence from his law firm, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton, and Garrison. “But even beforebeing sworn in as a special assistant to the Manhattan D.A., Pomerantz had reportedly ‘been helping with the case informally for months.’”Even Democrats’ most reliable Old Grey Lady (of the evening) acknowledged, “the hiring of an outsider is a highly unusual move for a prosecutor’s office.”

As I previously reported, during Biden’s first run for the White House, “the law firm hosted a $2,800-per-plate fundraiser for about 100 guests.” Brad Karp, the chair of Paul, Weiss, also topped the list of Biden fundraisers, bundling at least $100,000 for the then-candidate. At the time, Karp wrote in an email: “As someone who cares passionately about preserving the rule of law, safeguarding our democracy and protecting fundamental liberties, I’ve been delighted to do everything I possibly can to support the Joe Biden/Kamala Harris ticket.”

 

Biden’s relationship with Karp continued after his election, with the president including Karp and his wife at a state dinner with the Australian prime minister.

 

Karp and his fellow Paul, Weiss lawyers continue to fund Biden’s re-election campaign. In fact, Biden’s connection to the firm is so strong Bloomberg branded Paul, Weiss the “Biden-Era N.Y. Power Center.”

But for Paul, Weiss lending Pomerantz to the Manhattan D.A.’s office to control the Trump investigation, the former president likely never would have been charged. According to Pomerantz, Bragg had decided “not to go forward with the grand jury presentation and not to seek criminal charges,” indefinitely suspending the investigation.

 

Pomerantz made those claims in the resignation letter he tendered to Bragg in early 2022, which was deliberately leaked to The New York Times.

 

“Pomerantz’s letter and his claims that Bragg had suspended the Trump probe triggered a political firestorm, which the Manhattan D.A. sought to quell by telling the public the investigation was ongoing.” Soon after, Bragg capitulated, hiring Biden’s high-ranking DOJ lawyer, Colangelo, who proceeded to indict and convict Trump.

 

In contrast to the Biden-connected attorneys who secured Trump’s indictment and conviction, in late 2021, at least three career prosecutors in the Manhattan D.A.’s office asked to be removed from the investigation of Trump, reportedly “concerned that the investigation was moving too quickly, without clear evidence to support possible charges.”

 

Not Just Manhattan

The Biden connection to the political targeting of Trump is not limited to the Manhattan D.A.’s office. In August 2023, Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis charged Trump and 18 other Republicans in a sprawling 98-page criminal indictment.

 

Earlier this year, court filings and testimony in the case related to motions to disqualify Willis and her former lover, Nathan Wade, revealed the Fulton County D.A.’s office had met with White House counsel in May 2022. Then,just three days after Trump announced his 2024 candidacy for president, Wade traveled to D.C. for an interview with the “White House,” according to Fulton County records. The Biden administration’s White House counsel’s office also dispatched two letters to Willis, according to one of her prosecutors.

 

Biden and his Democrat-run administration also have their fingers all over the remaining two criminal cases targeting Trump, both brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith. President Biden, according to an April 2, 2022, New York Times report, “As recently as late last year… confided to his inner circle that he believed former President Donald J. Trump was a threat to democracy and should be prosecuted.”

 

The Times claimed Biden had expressed frustration with Garland’s “deliberative approach” and that the president believed Trump should be prosecuted. The president “has said privately that he wanted Mr. Garland to act less like a ponderous judge and more like a prosecutor who is willing to take decisive action over the events of Jan. 6.,” the legacy outlet reported.

 

Biden’s attorney general would eventually appoint Smith special counsel. Smith would later charge Trump in two separate indictments—one in Florida concerning documents the former president retained, and one in D.C. with various conspiracy to defraud and obstruction charges related to Trump’s challenging the outcome of the 2020 election.

Stretching the Law Past Its Breaking Point

With the D.C. indictment, the special counsel delivered to Biden just what he wanted—a prosecution of Trump “for his role in the events of Jan. 6.” To deliver for Biden, though, required Smith to stretch the federal criminal code to the point of breaking. In the case of two of the crimes charged, in the context of Jan. 6, 2021 defendants, the Supreme Court seems poised to limit the reach of the relevant statutes—a holding that could mean that Smith charged Trump with two non-crimes.

 

The final criminal case pending against Trump, Smith’s documents case, also connects back to the Biden administration. That case began when the DOJ launched an investigation prompted by a referral from the national archivist related to a dispute over presidential records—even though the same archivist declined to refer Hillary Clinton to the DOJ for mishandling classified documents. Later, a top aide to Smith, Jay Bratt, would meet with “White House officials multiple times, just weeks before Mr. Smith indicted former President Donald Trump.”

 

That case has been delayed after it was revealed the FBI agents who executed a search warrant obtained by the Biden administration had failed to keep the documents seized from Mar-a-Lago in the same condition they were found, with the order of the materials mixed up. At the same time, it was revealed that the “classified cover sheets” depicted in the photographs of the evidence seized during the August 2022 search of Trump had been placed there by federal agents. The leak of those photographs falsely portrayed the former president as in possession of documents bearing classified cover sheets.

 

Biden can continue to deny his responsibility for the criminal targeting of his political opponent all he wants, but the facts tell a different story. So did the president’s malevolent smileon Friday when he was asked to respond to Trump calling himself a political prisoner and blaming the president directly.

OK, I may have something interesting for you guys. This could be nothing, but I thought it was worth bringing to your attention just in case. See something say something right?

 

So, in the UK, the government has been buying out hotels to house illegal immigrants. The situation is dire over here. We're a small pair of islands, so even if the numbers of migrants we are getting seem small to US eyes, it's far too many for us to cope with. We would have to build a new home every 2 minutes just to keep up with the numbers coming in. That gives you an idea of how bad it is. And the way the government is housing them all in hotels concerns me. I can't help but feel like it's a convenient smokescreen to garrison foreign forces in our communities under the whole humanitarianism guise. I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing, but I thought it worth checking this particular situation out. I came across a YouTube video put up by someone who goes around documenting these migrant hotels, and this situation is a bit different. There's a large number of shipping containers at this hotel which isnt something you ever see. The guy films them, and serial numbers are visible in the video. I was thinking, what if those shipping containers were trackable via those serial numbers? At the very least, it would be interesting to see where they came from. Might give an idea of what the hotel occupants are being supplied with, and by whom.

 

I have no idea where to start or how to go about tracking where they came from prior to them ariving at that hotel. And I dont have access to a computer anymore on account of being poor, which will make reading the serial numbers harder etc. Any of you guys want to look into it?

Listen, I’d support a zombie for president if they promised to nominate originalists for the Supreme Court and deregulate the economy. Do whatever you have to do.But stop telling me that Joe Biden isn’t a mentally and physically fragile man.

 

We can all watch the video of ouroctogenarian president awkwardly freezing upand staring out at a crowd before former president Barack Obama takes his arm and leads him off the stage.

 

Now, I can tell youfrom experience, it isn’t normal for a grown man to grab another man’s arm in this manner— unless one of them needs help. If Biden was really in the robust physical and mental state that the White House maintains, Obama would have merely said something to Biden or given him a friendly tap on the shoulder. But like Dr. First Lady Jill Biden and White House handlers and world leaders, Obama was compelled to act as caretaker to a confused Joe Biden.

 

And, considering his age, that isn’t abnormal.There is, however, something decidedly abnormal about the coverup. I’m not sure we have ever seen anything quite like this kind of gaslighting.

 

In the past, the media would wrap inconvenient news in some quasi-journalistic effort to give it credence. Reporters might go out and find proxy “experts” that dispel the obvious or they would bury news in layers of “context.” When the Hunter Biden laptop story broke, virtually the entire establishment media proactively tainted the revelations by waving around a letter from partisan former Obama officials warning about Russian ”disinformation.”

 

Successfully suppressing the misadventures of President Magoo, however, means convincing millions of Americans to reject the events they see happening every day–things that anyone who has ever dealt with an aging relative recognizes.

 

I’m not contending that every video clip spread by the RNC of Biden is offered in full, pristine context. Democrats who are still accusing Donald Trump of calling Tiki-torch Nazis “very fine people” or claiming he wanted people to “inject bleach” aren’t really in a position to complain.

I’m merely sayingthere are numerous videos of these events, and there are endless examples of Biden’s decline.

 

There is cropped video of the Obama incident. There is uncropped video. There is a full video provided by The Hollywood Reporter. We even have a video provided by the White House that only confirms Biden froze up and was led off by Obama.Seemingly every time the left provides a clip to debunk or contextualize one of Biden’s mishaps, they reinforce the original.

 

Like a prepubescent kid caught in the act, the White House just says “This did not happen.” Karine Jean-Pierre told the press that the Hollywood video, and other recent clips of the baffled president, were “cheap fakes.” As far as I can tell, not a single reporter asked her to elaborate on which parts of these clips were manipulated. Instead, most rushed to the White House’s aid.

 

The truth is, they’re not even trying very hard anymore.CNN’s Oliver Darcy wrote that the video was a fabrication without offering any explanation or evidence to back up the claim. On MSNBC, Nicolle Wallace didn’t merely contend the tape was part of a “growing and insidious trend in right-wing media” to spread “highly misleading and selectively edited videos,” she played an edited clip of the incident that cuts out the worst part.

“Misleading GOP videos of Biden are going viral,” says NBC News, in whatcan only be described as a piece of propaganda. “The fact-checks have trouble keeping up.”…

Indeed, the “fact-checks” were particularly astonishing. The Associated Press’s “FACT FOCUS” not only relied on “Biden campaign spokesperson James Singer,” “White House spokesperson Andrew Bates,” “White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre,”but also “Lewis Kay, a spokesperson for Jimmy Kimmel,” to allegedly debunk the Obama video.

Deeply? The Post offers an alternative video of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni gathering Biden before the president could wander away that is probably more misleading than the original. It was edited to exclude the fact that Biden is completely out of sync with every other world leader, all of whom are paying attention to the parachuter who landed right in front of them. Despite the Four Pinocchios, both clips show him “meandering.”

 

It is true that the video of Biden fruitlessly trying to find his chair during a D-Day commemoration was misleading. There was a chair. The video now shows us an old man struggling to accomplish the simple physical act of sitting down. Because he’s old. It is transparently ridiculous to keep denying this truth.

 

Biden’s mental acuity, never particularly sharp to begin with, has considerably deteriorated over the past couple of years. It’s not thelifelong fabulismorhabitual lyingorhis lashing out at anyonewho asks him a marginally tough question. Whether he’s saying, “God save the queen, man,” for no discernible reason or shaking hands with ghosts or struggling to walk up normal-sized stairs, the president acts like a man who is struggling to do his job.

 

Yes, Biden also has his moments. As we all know, elderly people in decline have good days and bad ones. Maybe putting a lid on the day at 11 a.m. most weeks is paying off. But the fact that Biden can still read a speech off a teleprompter or give an interview to an obsequious journalist doesn’t prove he’s not struggling in general.We can all see the truth. 73-year-old Crown Point man sentenced to 30 months in prison for Jan. 6 capitol breach

 

WASHINGTON D.C. — A northwest Indiana man will spend the next 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to federal charges relating the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6, 2021.

 

According to the FBI, Dale Huttle, 73, of Crown Point was sentenced to 30 months in prison, 24 months of supervised release, and ordered to pay $3,639 in restitution by U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper.

 

Huttle is guilty of assault, resisting or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon and causing serious bodily injury.

 

Court documents allege Huttle traveled to Washington D.C. from Indiana on Jan. 6, 2021. After marching to the Capitol Building from the rally, Huttle, using a flag pole with an upside-down American flag on it, jabbed the pole into the stomach of an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

 

The officer fell from the attack and suffered a slipped disc in their back, according to court documents.

Artificial intelligence technology risks promoting Holocaust denial, a new study has found

 

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology could cause a surge in false narratives about World War II atrocities, including Holocaust denial, the UN education and culture body UNESCO has warned.

 

According to a report published in partnership with the World Jewish Congress on Tuesday, the generation of false content, such as deep fakes and misinformation, could undermine the authenticity of historical evidence and spread anti-Semitic ideologies.

 

The study pointed to the widespread use of AI for assistance in education, research and writing, which it said could result in an increased likelihood of unreliable data.

 

Deep-fake images and audio content created using Generative AI are particularly convincing for young people, who may encounter them on social-media platforms, the report cautioned.

 

With four in five young people between the ages of 10 and 24 now using AI several times a day for education, entertainment and other purposes, according to UN research, “action to ethically guide these new technologies must be taken quickly,” the report warns.

 

The report used the Historical Figures App as an example. The interface reportedly allowed users to chat with prominent Nazis such as Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels, and falsely claimed that individuals such as Goebbels were not intentionally involved in the Holocaust and had tried to prevent violence against Jews.

 

The report also said that ChatGPT and Google’s Bard have both produced content detailing Holocaust-related events that never took place.

 

“If we allow the horrific facts of the Holocaust to be diluted, distorted or falsified through the irresponsible use of AI, we risk the explosive spread of anti-Semitism…” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

 

UNESCO has called on governments to accelerate the implementation of the Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, which was unanimously adopted by its member states in 2021.

 

The UN agency has also urged tech companies to establish ethical rules for the development and use of AI in an effort to reduce the chances of unreliable information being generated and to prevent bad actors from spreading misinformation.

On a Friday morning in October 2018, two officers who worked for a Texas school district kidnapped a 14-year-old girl from her home based on spurious child abandonment concerns. Although Texas Child Protective Services (CPS) promptly determined there was no reason to suspect neglect or abuse, the cops pursued criminal charges against the girl's mother, leading to a trial in which a jury acquitted her after deliberating for five minutes.

 

A civil rights lawsuit provoked by these outrageous abuses has been working its way through the federal courts for nearly four years. On Tuesday, a federal judge scathingly rejected the officers' motion for summary judgment, clearing the way for a trial.

Here’s How The Media Are Lying Right Now: CNN’s ‘Tools’ For A ‘Civilized’ Debate

CNN says it has “tools” to enforce a “civilized” debate between Trump and Biden.What they mean is there’s a plan to interfere.

 

This semi-regular feature is usually about some deceitful narrative the propaganda news media are pushing in recent days, but there’s a high-stakes presidential debate next week and it’s better that we use this installment to anticipate what will happen then.

 

CNN, the debate’s host network, said Saturday that both President Biden and former President Trump had agreed to the terms for participating, but the announcement includedthis alarming detail: “[A]s in the past, the moderators ‘will use all tools at their disposal to enforce timing and ensure a civilized discussion …'”

 

It was already the case that thecandidates will have their mics mutedduring the opposing candidate’s time, eliminating interruptions of one another. So, what other “tools” will remain at the disposal of CNN’s miserable choice for moderators, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, so thatthey might “enforce timing”and, more insidiously, “ensure a civilized discussion?”

 

The way things are supposed to happen is the moderators ask questions andallow the candidates equal time to answer. Even with the new stipulation that a mic is turned down when it’s outside of a candidate’s allotted time, the basic concept shouldn’t change.

 

But that’s surely not how this is going to work. By “enforce timing” and “ensure a civilized discussion,” what CNN means is that Tapper, Bash, and the countlessproducers in their ear pieces will cut off both Trump and Biden at their discretion, though for sharply different reasons.

 

Trump will have his audio killed because his plan is undeniably to lay into CNN and the media at large just as much as it is to flay Biden’s godawful presidency. Both are deserving of it, but Tapper and Bash are in control and aren’t going to just bend over and take it. The “tools at their disposal” in that event will be for the pair to drop Trump’s feed and insert their own niggling, irksome commentary about the former president veering “off topic” or failing to be “civilized.”

 

Biden, by contrast, will be saved by the mute. Rewatch the presidential debates of 2020 and it’s exceedingly obvious Trump’s frantic and frequent interjections during Biden’s time to speak hurt the former president.The more Biden is allowed to speak, the more unseemly his performance.

 

Whether he’s musing about his dead son, his fabricated biography, or his indefensible record, he meanders each time into incoherence, leaving his audience as confounded as concerned. The purpose ofcutting Biden’s mic will serve to mitigate that handicap.

 

As ever on the media’s turf, the deck is stacked against Trump.A live audience, invariably a Trump asset,won’t be present.

 

He could have insisted that there beno interruptions or “live fact checks” (aka unsolicited opinions) by moderators, but there’s no indication he did and now CNN is essentially admitting it reserves the right for Tapper and Bash to act up as they please.

 

The lie hasn’t happened yet, but we already know what it is. It’s that Tapper and CNN will do everything they can to shield Biden and kneecap Trump, excusing the blatant election interference as simply an honest attempt to “enforce timing and ensure a civilized discussion.”

Ecuador Suspends China Visa Deal Amid Flood Of US-Bound Migrants

 

Ecuador is suspending a visa agreement with China amid a "worrying increase" in arrivals who are using the South American country as a jumpoff point to begin their northbound journey to the United States to take advantage of the criminally open border.

 

The mutual visa waiver program between the two countries has been in place since 2016, and grants visa-free travel to Chinese nationals. The only other South American nation with a similar agreement is Suriname.

 

According to the country's foreign ministry, nearly half of Chinese travelers entering Ecuador did not leave "through regular routes" or within the 90 days allotted, the Financial Times reports.

 

Many global migrants headed to the US land in Ecuador, which has fewer visa restrictions than other South American countries. The onward journey north includes the Darién Gap, a treacherous tract that separates Colombia and Panama. There, migrants are vulnerable to crime, sexual violence and the hazards of the jungle.

 

Last year the number of Chinese individuals attempting to enter the US through the southern border skyrocketed - with US Customs and Border Protection detaining over 37,000 Chinese nationals - a 10x increase from 2022.

 

Around 66,000 Chinese travelers entered Ecuador last year, while just 34,000 left via traditional channels, according to officials.

 

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian gave a milquetoast response to FT, saying that the agreement with Ecuador "plays an important and positive role in promoting cross-border travel and practical co-operation in various fields between the two countries."

 

Lin added that China is working with other counties to combat human trafficking.

 

The suspended visa agreement will take effect July 1, according to Ecuadorean officials, who say the country "reiterates its commitment so that people who visit the country can do so with adequate security guarantees, preventing them from being victims of human trafficking or migrant smuggling."

 

China is Ecuador's largest non-oil trade partner, and has been a key source of financing for infrastructure and energy.

National Security Threat

 

On June 11, news broke that eight Tajikistan nationals with possible connections to the terrorist group ISIS had been arrested in New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles in recent days. Tajikistan nationals were responsible for the March 22 attack on the Crocus City Hall concert near Moscow that left more than 140 people dead and hundreds injured.

 

The suspects crossed the U.S. southern border illegally in 2023 and were released after being vetted. The federal government’s screening process did not turn up any information that would have identified them as potential terrorists with ties to ISIS.

 

Last month, Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX), who sits on the National Security, the Border and Foreign Affairs subcommittee, held a classified hearing in May titled: “Intruder Alert: Assessing the CCP’s Ongoing Infiltration of U.S. Military Installations.”

Carson, who ran for president in 2016 and was secretary for Housing and Urban Development in the Trump administration, told "Newsline" it is disturbing watching Biden be pushed out in public despite his apparent decline.

Rishi Sunak's close protection officer arrested and suspended over alleged bets on election date

The police constable's arrest comes weeks after it emerged Mr Sunak's close parliamentary aide Craig Williams is facing an investigation after he bet on a July election.

The officer is a member of the Met's Royalty and Specialist Protection (RaSP) Command, which provides personal close protection to ministerial VIPs and members of the Royal Family.

Sky News understands that several bets were placed, with at least one of them being a three-figure sum.

The police constable's arrest comes days after it emerged Mr Sunak's close parliamentary aide Craig Williams is facing an investigation after he bet on a July election date.

The Gambling Commission informed the Met Police on Friday 14 June that they were investigating the activity by the police constable.

The Met has said the matter was immediately referred to officers in the force's directorate of professional standards, who opened an investigation. The officer was also removed from operational duties.

The Met added in a statement: "The officer was subsequently arrested on Monday 17 June on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was taken into custody and bailed pending further enquiries."

Mr Sunak said he was "disappointed" after it emerged last week that Mr Williams had bet on a July election.

 

Mr Williams, who was the PM's parliamentary private secretary (PPS), is facing an investigation after he "put a flutter on the general election" just days before the 4 July date was announced.

Lawsuit: Foreigner Voting In Burlington School District Elections Violates Vermont’s Constitution

’ Permitting foreign nationals to vote in Burlington School District elections violates the Vermont Constitution, a lawsuit filed Monday claims.

Brought by two Vermonters against the City of Burlington, thelawsuit alleges that a charter amendment adopted by the locality last year allowing noncitizens to vote in Burlington School District electionsdoes not comport with the Green Mountain State’s founding document. The residents are supported by Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections (RITE), an election integrity legal group.

 

“The charter change permitting noncitizen voting has changed the qualifications for voters as defined in [the Vermont Constitution] and the individual Plaintiffs are voters ‘within the voter pool for which those qualifications have been changed,'” the lawsuit reads. “Both individual Plaintiffs are registered voters who have voted and intend to continue voting in Burlington elections. Those votes will be diluted by noncitizen votes made possible by Burlington’s charter change.”

 

The City of Burlington adopted a charter amendment in March 2023 authorizing aliens who have legal status in the United States “to register and vote in all local elections.” In addition to this requirement, foreign nationals seeking to vote under the amendment must be at least 18 years old, have taken the Voter’s Oath, be a Burlington resident as specified by state law, and be “registered to vote with the Board of Registration of Voters not later than the deadline established by Vermont law for that election or meeting.”

 

The amendment was approved by Vermont’s Democrat-controlled General Assembly in May 2023, but was vetoed by liberal Republican Gov. Phil Scott that same month. The General Assembly subsequently overrode Scott’s veto on June 20, 2023, allowing the amendment to take effect. Plaintiffs note how the city oath foreign nationals must recite before voting in Burlington School District elections — “which includes votes on the annual education budget as well as for members of a Board of School Commissioners” — conflicts with the Vermont Constitution’s Voter Oath. Rather than require noncitizen electors to pledge to vote in the state’s best interests, as specified by Vermont’s founding document, Burlington’s oath requires them to pledge to vote in the city’s best interests.

 

Plaintiffs argue this is problematic because “[s]chool budgets and school funding in Vermont are statewide, freeman issues,” meaning“votes regarding local school budgets directly impact the State budget and thus the financial interests of Vermonters statewide.”“Once a school budget is approved by local voters, paying for it becomes the responsibility of the State through the State Education Fund,” the lawsuit reads. “Defendant has now expanded the electorate that determines educational issues to include noncitizens, even though those votes have substantial extra-municipal and statewide implications and thus directly implicate [the Vermont Constitution’s] limitation of the franchise to United States citizens.”

 

The lawsuit details litigation filed against other Vermont localities for approving noncitizen voting measures in years prior. Montpelier and Winooski’s adoption of charter amendments authorizing alien voting in their local elections in 2021 prompted the Republican National Committee to bring suits against the cities, which alleged that the measures violated the Vermont Constitution. The Vermont Supreme Court ultimately struck down the RNC lawsuit against Montpelier in January 2023, ruling the state constitution does not “categorically” bar foreign nationals from voting in local elections. A lower court similarly dismissed the GOP’s challenge to Winooski’s charter amendment.

 

“The non-citizen voting movement achieves the left’s goal of legalizing foreign interference in American elections,” RITE President Derek Lyons said in a statement. “It threatens the rule of law and must be stopped before it further infects Vermont and other states in this country.” Plaintiffs are asking the court to declare Burlington’s charter amendment as it relates to school board elections and education funding unconstitutional. They also request the court prevent the city and its employees from enforcing the amendment’s “application to any election that determines school board members or education funding for the City of Burlington, including enrollment of any noncitizen voters or allowance of noncitizen voting in such elections in the future.”

Bill Gates Funded Bioweapons Experiments to Spread Bird Flu to Humans

 

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates invested millions of dollars in bioweapons experiments that sought to manipulate bird flu into jumping to mammals and spreading among humans.

 

The Gates Foundation gave $9.5 million to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and principal investigator Yoshihiro Kawaoka.

 

The funding paid for experiments to modify Avian Influenza H5N1 viruses to preferentially recognize human-type receptors and rapidly transmit in mammals.

 

Gates’s role in the experiments was highlighted by world-renowned cardiologist Dr. Peter McCullough.

 

In a post on X, McCullough stated:

 

“The Gates Foundation money was also used in a project headed by both Yoshihiro Kawaoka and Ron Fouchier (he previously modified H5N1 to become airborne transmissible in ferrets at the Erasmus Medical Center), where they provided the two additional mutations that would be needed in Egyptian H5N1 viruses to create variants with the mammalian ‘transmissibility features’ identified in the Kawaoka study.

 

“This indicates that the Gates Foundation funded bioterrorist-like activities involving H5N1, providing blueprints for other bad actors who may want to create a bioweapon.”

 

Back in 2006, Kawaoka and colleague Taisuke Horimoto published a study aimed at developing new “vaccines” for H5N1 influenza A viruses, Natural News reports.

Top Dems sign off on biggest weapons sale to Israel to date

 

Cardin and Meeks had worried about the humanitarian toll. Not anymore.

 

The Washington Post this morning has reported that the top Democrats on the Armed Services Committees — Rep. Gregory Meeks (N.Y.), and Senator Ben Cardin (Md.) — have finally given their nod on the biggest arms sale to Israel since Oct. 7.

 

In fact, after holding it up for months they gave their approval "weeks ago." Now Congress will be formally notified.

 

The package includes 50 F-15s that won't arrive in Israel for years, along with surface-to-air missiles and Joint Direct Attack Munition kits, which retrofit unguided bombs with precision guidance, according to the paper. The package is worth $18 billion.

 

The two Democrats had been resistant to give their nods (the ranking Republicans gave their approval months ago) due in part to the continued blocking of aid in the strip. Meeks, according to the Post, told CNN in April that “I don’t want the kinds of weapons that Israel has to be utilized to have more deaths…I want to make sure that humanitarian aid gets in. I don’t want people starving to death, and I want Hamas to release the hostages. And I want a two-state solution.”

 

What changed his mind is a mystery as 1) there is less aid getting into Gaza than ever, and 2) U.S. weapons have been used in several mass casualty events on the ground in recent weeks as Israel has pushed into Rafah and has been bombarding central and southern Gaza, obliterating homes, shelters, and targeting refugee encampments for the last month.

 

But we know there is enormous pressure on lawmakers who want the Biden administration to use its leverage — including $4 billion a year in military aid to pay for such weapons — to stop the civilian carnage Republicans have said that the administration is not giving the Israelis more missiles and ammo fast enough, calling it a "reprehensible" betrayal. Efforts to condition further aid have fallen largely by the wayside.

 

The administration has "paused" the transfer of 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs due to recent events but are already consider "unpausing." The House has already passed a bill punishing the administration for holding back the weapons in the first place.

 

According to the Post, Meeks told the paper that he has been in “close touch” with the White House and “repeatedly urged the administration to continue pushing Israel to make significant and concrete improvements on all fronts when it comes to humanitarian efforts and limiting civilian casualties.” Cardin's office, for its part, said the package had gone through the "regular review processes."

Netanyahu Demands White House Give Him Tools to ‘Finish the Job’ in Gaza==

 

Israeli PM tells Secretary of State Antony Blinken it is “inconceivable” the US would withhold arms from Tel Aviv as it “fights for its life”

 

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu published a scathing video blasting the White House for holding back weapons shipments to Israel. Washington has blocked one transfer of 2,000-pound bombs but has overwhelmingly provided all the arms requested by Tel Aviv. The PM demanded the US supply the tools Israel needs to “finish the job a lot faster” in the Gaza Strip.

 

On Tuesday, Netanyahu posted the video to his X account. Speaking in English, the PM said “When Secretary Blinken was recently here in Israel, we had a candid conversation. I said I deeply appreciate the support the US has given Israel from the beginning of the war. But I also said something else. I said it is inconceivable that in the past few months, the administration has been withholding weapons and ammunition to Israel.”

 

In late April, the White House decided it would suspend the shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel over concerns about civilian deaths in Gaza. However, President Joe Biden suggested that he would cut off additional arms transfers if Israeli forces proceeded with a full-scale invasion of Rafah. Over a month after that assault began, Biden has failed to follow through on his supposed red line.

 

According to Netanyahu, the White House will likely reverse course on its vow to scale back this military aid. “Secretary Blinken assured me that the administration is working day and night to remove these blocks. I certainly hope that is the case. It should be the case,” he explained in the video.

 

The Israeli leader concluded his message by demanding Biden remove all restrictions on weapons so he could quickly wrap up operations in Gaza. “In WWII Churchill told the US, ‘Give us the tools we’ll do the job.’” He added, “And I say, ‘give us the tools and we will finish the job a lot faster.’”

 

Throughout the latest conflict with Hamas, top Israeli officials have repeatedly invoked allied war crimes committed during the Second World War in cities like Dresden, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki to justify the onslaught in Gaza.

 

The White House and Secretary of State Antony Blinken denied that the Biden administration was holding up arms shipments to Israel. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “We genuinely don’t know what he is talking about.”

 

Blinken explained only one shipment of 2,000-pound bombs is under review. “We, as you know, are continuing to review one shipment that President Biden has talked about with regard to 2,000-pound bombs because of our concerns about their use in a densely populated area like Rafah,” he added, “But everything else is moving as it normally would move and, again, with the perspective of making sure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself against this multiplicity of challenges.”

Democrat Fixer Marc Elias’ Firm Steps In To Stop ‘Disastrous Election System’ Fix

Leftist groups argue that forcing Nevada election officials to follow the law and clean up dirty voter rolls will ‘threaten’ voting rights. Bogus Russian dossier peddler and Democrat Party problem fixer Marc Elias has again injected himself into a key election integrity case to “defend the broken status quo.”

 

Swing-state Nevada’s dirty voter rolls include hundreds of suspect addresses, at bars, strip clubs, empty parking lots, and other commercial addresses, according to an investigation by the Public Interest Legal Foundation. Doing so is clearly against the law.

 

“In Nevada, by thestate law, you are required to be registered where you actually live, where you sleep. Not where you work, not at a P.O. Box. So we’re trying to get elections officials to enforce the law,” Lauren Bis, PILF’s director of communication and engagement, says in a video tracking bad addresses in the Las Vegas area.

 

To that end, the foundation has filed a petition in Washoe County, Nevada’s second-most populous county, to force elections officials to investigate and fix commercial addresses on the voter roll. PILF investigators found addresses on the rolls reported as liquor stores, empty lots, and even the Nevada Gaming Control Board, among others.

 

Baseless Attacks?

Elias Law Group and a band of leftists have sought to intervene in PILF’s petition for a writ ofmandamus, arguing that forcing Washoe election administrators to follow the law and clean up the county’s dirty voter rolls will “threaten” voting rights.The would-be intervenors claim that their members and constituents would be forced to “expend substantial resources to educate voters and protect them from baseless attacks on their eligibility.”

 

Baseless attacks?

As The Federalist recently reported, Bis was greeted with a lot of quizzical looks from employees at the casinos, fast-food restaurants, retailers, post offices, funeral homes, strip clubs, tattoo parlors, and jails where registered voters — at least according to Nevada’s dirty voter rolls — “resided.” What PILF found was equal parts sad and hilarious, foundation President J. Christian Adams told me on “The Federalist Radio Hour.”

 

The election integrity public interest law firm tracked data from the Nevada secretary of state’s office, whichin the 2022 midterm elections reported 95,556 ballots sent to undeliverable, or “bad,” addresses. PILF investigators documented commercial addresses purported to be the residences of registered voters, confirming on video that the individuals did not live where they reported residing.“We’ve been to all of the locations. It’s not some data exercise we see sitting at a computer in Chicago. We’ve actually got boots on the ground looking for the voters, and they don’t exist,” Adams said.

‘Disastrous Elections System’

Making matters worse,Nevada automatically mails a ballot to every active registrant on the voter rolls.

 

 

• “I’m looking for Ronald or William Phelps,” Bis says in the video to a bartender wearing a “Tacos por favor” T-shirt at a local watering hole on North Nellis Boulevard in Vegas.

• “I don’t know who that is,” the barkeep replies.

• “So, they don’t live here?” Bis asks.

•“Uh, at the bar? No,” the bartender says, chuckling. She’s clearly amused by the question.

 

It’s almost as amusing as Elias and friends’ apparent efforts to stop election officials from following the law under the absurd premise of voter rights. Their court filing offers a dire warning about what will happen if Washoe County is required to do what PILF has done: Washoe County’s job.

 

“If the Court grants such relief, Respondent Burgess — and other clerks and registrars across the state — will be flooded with third-party demands to investigate all manner of alleged peculiarities in the voter rolls, based on unsourced, unverified, and unsworn information,” the court filing admonishes. “Petitioners are not the only ones making such demands. Nevada is in the midst of a storm of baseless efforts by third parties to force election officials to undertake a rushed purge of registered voters before the November election.”

 

Adams called Elias’ latest lawfare stunt a “cry wolf exercise.”

“He does this all over the country. Defense Ministry says massive exports come as industries remain committed to Israeli war effort; air defense systems account for more than a third of sales.

Annual Israeli arms sales reached a new record in 2023, for the third consecutive year, amounting to nearly double the value of exports compared to five years ago, according to Defense Ministry figures released Monday.

 

The ministry’s International Defense Cooperation Directorate, known as SIBAT, said defense exports totaled $13 billion last year, up from $12.5 billion in 2022 — the previous record high. Between 2018 and 2020, that number hovered between $7.5 billion and $8.5 billion.

 

With the outbreak of the war on October 7, the Defense Ministry said it began operating in an “emergency mode,” with defense contractors being drafted to the war effort by manufacturing weaponry and equipment for the Israel Defense Forces around the clock, alongside previous orders for foreign clients.

 

“Despite the war, 2023 amounted to a new record and was characterized by significant export deals,” the ministry said.

 

Air defense systems made up the largest chunk of exports at 36% — up from 19% in 2022. This was largely due to Israel’s €4 billion sale of the Arrow 3 anti-ballistic missile system to Germany.

 

Exports of radar and electronic warfare systems amounted to 11% of arms sales, and weapons launchers made up another 11%.

 

While Israel is known for cyber-intelligence systems, these only amounted to 4% of all sales in 2023. Officials did not specify which countries they were sold to. Israeli sales of such technologies have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years due to allegations they were used by some countries to spy on political dissidents and journalists.

 

Unmanned aerial vehicles and drones, manned aircraft, avionics, observation systems, communication systems, vehicles, maritime systems, ammunition, and services accounted for much of the rest.

 

The Asia-Pacific region was the largest purchaser of Israeli defense goods, buying 48% of total exports, followed by Europe at 35%.

 

North America accounted for 9%, Latin America for 3%, and Africa for 1%.

 

The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco, which normalized relations with Israel in 2020 agreements known as the Abraham Accords, accounted for just 3% of the arms purchases — down from 24% in 2022.

 

“Even in a year in which the State of Israel is fighting against seven different arenas, the defense exports of the State of Israel succeed in continuing to break records. This fact is a certificate of honor, first and foremost, for our defense industries and the creative and talented minds that work in them and drive them to the heights of breakthrough innovation,” said Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in remarks provided by the ministry.

 

“This year’s figures show that even though our defense industries are committed… to the war effort, they continue to sign more and more significant export deals, thus enabling the realization of the effort led by the Defense Ministry to increase defense exports while opening them to new markets,” he added.

“As many of our colleagues know I was fortunate to be here in Washington when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. And I don’t recall Dr. King calling for retribution. In fact, his name has become nearly synonymous with the exact opposite. “But apparently, this is just one more subject on which Judge Kasubhai would prefer to leave ‘conventional ideas’ behind.
