The Biden-Harris administration has made a crackdown on residential fossil fuel consumption a key aspect of its environmental strategy, justifying the push in part on the grounds electrification will lower energy costs.

 

Now, Oct. 17 residential energy price data from the Department of Energy (DOE) shows electricity was roughly four times as expensive as natural gas in 2024, with experts telling the DCNF the White House’s electrification push is an example of extremist climate policy hurting everyday Americans.

 

“The Department of Energy has consistently shown that natural gas is a much cheaper energy source for households than electricity,” Daren Bakst, director of the Competitive Enterprise Institute’s Center for Energy and Environment, told the DCNF.

 

“Government policies trying to block the use of natural gas in favor of electricity will significantly drive up prices, making home heating and appliance use needlessly expensive.

 

The poor will get hurt the most because, compared to higher income households, they spend a greater share of their household income on meeting basic needs such as staying warm in the winter.”

Incredible as it seems, at least to me,it is the four-year anniversary of this outline[GO DEEP].

 

During the rushed debate over the Patriot Act, waswhen I first heard political officials talking about the importance of “continuity of government.”

 

I immediately recognized what all these DC voices weredescribing was a construct of a post-911 government that would exist and maintain itself without the elected representatives of WeThe People.

 

The intelligence gathering and homeland security system put into place after thePatriot Act was passed, is a bureaucratic administrative state without the presence of elected officials controlling the apparatus. That leads to the following question:

 

How can a constitutional republic function without elected officials in control of it?

 

That question is at the heart of our current situation.

 

That question is at the epicenter of this “new American democracy” that no one seems to understand.

 

The simple answer is it cannot.

 

We have been fighting this three-headed IC monster (DHS, DNI, DOJ-NSD) ever since.

 

This reality the underlying predicate behind why Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the Special Counsel charges against Trump.This reality is also the underlying framework behind why the Supreme Court recently reaffirmed the plenary power of the Presidentwith control over the executive.

 

In the post-9/11 system that was created by the Patriot Act, our Constitutional Republic was inextricably fractured, placing systems and silos in charge of government under the auspices of “continuity of government.”

 

From that moment forth, elected representatives no longer held authority or oversight over the national security apparatus. Instead, the Patriot Act flipped the actual system of democratically elected representative government.

 

The RESULT:Our elected officials became subservient to the institutional interests of unelected agency officials. As Senator Schumer calls them “the six ways from Sunday” coalition.

 

This reality empirically surfaces with people likeformer AG Bill Barr saying the President does not have unilateral authority over the DOJ. Also, the Lawfare approach and narrative that a President is not the arbiter of governing power.Both statements are constitutionally false, as affirmed by SCOTUS– Thank God.

 

Understand this. This is the root of the cancer that was always present, silent and lurking in the background institutions prior to 9/11.After the Patriot Act passed, that cancer fully metastasized and entered the bloodstream of American governance.

 

What was previously a slimy bag of institutional snakes, kept in place by a tenuously worn nylon bag – sewn from the remaining fabric of our constitution, was released by the Patriot Act….

Every element vested in the “continuity of government” as a manipulation of the constitution are now aligned to eliminate the threat President Donald Trump represents.

 

We have one chance.

Read the SCOTUS opinion, not from a point of view of President Trump, but from the point of view of what does this allow him to do in his second term, and what invisible straightjackets did it remove that were a threat during his first term?

 

While impeachment is a political process within the Legislative Branch, and the Supreme Court is extremely hesitant to overstep their role therein, the High Court did put this sentiment clearly into the opinion about immunity: …“The President is not above the law. But Congress may not criminalize the President’s conduct in carrying out the responsibilities of the Executive Branch under the Constitution.”…

 

Congress may not criminalize the conduct of the President simply for carrying out his core executive branch duties.

 

Removal of Executive Branch officials is a core duty, an official act, carrying absolute immunity.

 

That affirmed reality is exactly why the Deep State and Lawfare crowd are very alarmed.

Americans should prepare for “unrest’ if former President Donald Trump completes the greatest political comeback in modern American politics, Democrats told the Wall Street Journal on Monday.

 

The potential for Democrats to perpetrate political violence undermines their narrative that Republicans, and especially the America First movement, are a threat to democracy.

 

“I think there’ll be some violence. I think there’ll be workplace fights. There’ll be fights at kids’ birthday parties. I think they’ll be protests and will turn violent,” Mark Halperin recently told Tucker Carlson.

 

Resistance groups, according to the Journal’s Joshua Chaffin and Valerie Bauerlein, believe citizens should be “bracing for unrest” if Trump wins:

Across America, more than a dozen progressives in various positions of influence told The Wall Street Journal that they are dreading the prospect of Trump’s return to power,and dismayed that half the country might see a completely different reality than they see. Some are bracing for unrest. On a recent evening, more than 200 people joined a Zoom meeting titled Mass Training For Women’s Safety Teams—hosted by a Women’s March veteran who noted its timing amid “escalating political violence.”

 

Others are channeling their nervousness into action: They are planning to attend Women’s Marches scheduled in Washington and beyond on the Saturday before the election. President Joe Biden is the nowhere man in the 2024 election race as Vice President Kamala Harris’s team simply ignores his entreaties to hit the campaign trail at her side, a report Sunday suggests.

 

Three people told Axios the Harris campaign keeps saying they’ll get back to the octogenarian’s team on when to send him out into the field – and then simply move on.

 

The Harris campaign views Biden as a political liability since his defenestration but doesn’t want to say directly they have no need for his efforts.

 

Democrats and some of Biden’s staff keep walking on eggshells around Biden’s delicate sensibilities, according to the outlet.

 

One person said it’s like a slow-moving break-up, with Harris’s team respecting Biden, but don’t want to connect a president with a 39 percent approval rating, according to FiveThirtyEight average, to their candidate who’s in a historically close race.

 

“He’s a reminder of the last four years, not the new way forward,” one person told Axios, referencing Harris’s slogan.

 

Biden’s unpopularity and increasingly diminished position has also kept him more sidelined on the campaign trail, officials said.

 

In a NBC News poll, just 25 percent of voters said Biden’s presidency has helped them and their families, with 45 percent saying his time in office has hurt them.

 

When it comes to Trump’s time in office, on the other hand, 43 percent of voters said it helped them and their families, versus 31 percent who said his presidency hurt them.

 

With Election Day just over a week away, there are currently no events scheduled for Biden, 81, and Harris, 60, to campaign together.

Only 31 percent of Americans have a “great deal” or “fair amount” of confidence in the media to tell the truth, one point below its low watermark of 32 percent in 2016 and 2023.

Currently, 54% of Democrats, 27% of independents and 12% of Republicans say they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media. Americans’ trust in the media in the 1970s ranged from the low 70s to the high 60s but sank to the low 50s in the Bush administration. During the Obama administration, it hovered above 40 percent and tanked to its lowest mark with the rise of former President Donald Trump.

DNC chair Jaime Harrison said in a statement seen by the outlet, “This investment showcases Democrats’ unwavering commitment to reaching Black voters where they are and through the platforms they trust – including familiar Black voices that will reach them on the airwaves – to ensure they have the resources they need to cast their ballot in the most important election of our lifetimes.”

 

As Breitbart News reported, black supporters of former President Donald Trump in Philadelphia earlier this month shared their reasons for opposing Harris with MSNBC in a special election episode of Alex Wagner Tonight.

 

Wagner spoke with members of the Black Republican Club of Philadelphia in the critical swing state of Pennsylvania.

 

Members offered a myriad of reasons for supporting Trump over Harris that ultimately boiled down to her record and qualifications.

 

“She’s a woman of color. I think the steal will be obvious enough when blue states flip red, but all 4 of the "we can't figure out how to count votes all week" states become a blue wall. My prediction is that the blue wall fails to be enough. This forces the blue players to do even more obviously illegal and undemocratic steps to prevent trumps return. Another session of votes created in all the major cities won't draw enough outrage for the public to want public MIL intervention. Medvedev promises ‘fireworks’ at German military factory in Ukraine

Rheinmetall has just confirmed the launch of its first production facility in the country

 

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has quipped that he anticipates a “fireworks display” at German industrial giant Rheinmetall’s new weapons manufacturing facility in Ukraine. The company announced on Saturday that one of its production plants in the country is already operational.

 

Germany's largest arms maker finalized plans to establish a joint venture with the state-owned Ukroboronprom defense group earlier this year, to manufacture artillery ammunition, armored vehicles and air-defense systems. As part of the partnership agreement, Rheinmetall, which produces a vast array of weapons including Leopard tanks, stated that it would build four factories on Ukrainian soil.

 

Moscow responded to the announcement with a warning that such facilities are considered “legitimate targets” for Russian strikes.

 

On Saturday, Rheinmetall's director, Armin Papperger, confirmed that “things are progressing” in Ukraine and “the first plant is already ready.”

 

“We have many good plans. The first plant is already operational,” he said during an interview with Ukrainian news channel TSN. “The Ukrainian defense industry is our partner."

 

“Currently, we have a production facility and a maintenance facility. By the end of the year, we will have the first state-of-the-art Lynx infantry fighting vehicle in Ukraine. At the moment, we are servicing infantry fighting vehicles as well as main battle tanks,” he added, noting that the joint venture has proven productive.

 

Medvedev, who currently serves as the deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, commented on the development, implying that the newly built plant will be targeted by the Russian military.

 

“The German company Rheinmetall has launched the first of four military factories in Ukraine. As previously promised, we eagerly await a celebratory Russian 'fireworks display' right at the production site,” he said in a post on X and his Telegram channel, accompanying the message with a short video of an explosion.

 

Rheinmetall had previously stated that the Ukrainian conflict has “significantly improved business performance” and nearly doubled the company’s operating profit in the first half of 2024. The company expects to receive orders exceeding €60 billion ($64.8 billion) by the end of this year.

 

Moscow has repeatedly denounced Western involvement in the conflict, arguing that efforts to support Kiev only benefit the military-industrial complex at the expense of EU and US taxpayers. Russia maintains that no amount of military aid to Ukraine will change the outcome of the conflict and will only prolong the fighting.

FBI, DHS Intel Bulletin Warns of Election Violence

The Biden administration's FBI and Department of Homeland Security reportedly warned state and local law enforcement agencies of domestic extremists seeking to disrupt the general election.

 

The two government agencies issued a Joint Intelligence Bulletin, which was reviewed by NBC News.

 

The bulletin identified potential targets, which include candidates, elected officials, election workers, media members and judges involved in election cases.

 

The outlet said potential threats include physical attacks and violence at polling places, ballot drop boxes, voter registration locations, rallies, and campaign events.

 

The bulletin said three domestic extremist attacks and two disrupted plots have been aimed at government and election officials since Jan. 6.

 

"The United States remains in a heightened, dynamic threat environment and we continue to share information with our law enforcement partners about the threats posed by domestic violent extremists in the context of the 2024 election," DHS spokesperson Mayra Rodriguez told NBC News in a statement.

 

"Violence has no place in our politics, and DHS continues to work with our partners to evaluate and mitigate emerging threats that may arise from domestic or foreign actors."

 

Federal intelligence agencies regularly provide reports such as the Joint Intelligence Bulletin.

 

Earlier this month, CBS News reported a bulletin warned of potential violent extremism and hate crimes committed in response to the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas terrorists on Israel.

 

The agencies found that the one-year mark of the attack "as well as any further significant escalations" in the Israel-Hamas war "may be a motivating factor for violent extremists and hate crime perpetrators to engage in violence or threaten public safety."

 

The latest Joint Intelligence Bulletin was among several intelligence documents obtained through public records requests by Property of the People.

 

Ryan Shapiro, executive director of the nonprofit group focused on government transparency, said the violence warnings "are not typical election threat intelligence."

 

"The documents are unmistakably a product of a radically heightened threat environment," Shapiro added, NBC News reported.

 

The latest bulletin said such things as letters containing white powder and online harassment and threats recently have increased, according to the FBI.

 

The bulletin also mentioned perceived election fraud, immigration, LGBTQ issues, abortion, and the assassination attempts against former Donald Trump as reasons for recent calls for violence.

The Amazon founder, meanwhile, has remained silent over the non-endorsement controversy. He has not spoken publicly amid protests from high-level staffers and prominent figures such as Watergate reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.

Marty Baron, who was executive editor of the newspaper when Bezos bought the Washington Post more than a decade ago, denounced the move as an act of “cowardice.”

 

Washington Post staffers were reeling over Bezos’ decision to block the Harris endorsement, a draft of which was said to be all typed up and ready for publication.

The newspaper’s own reporters published an article which claimed that Bezos himself made the decision to veto the endorsement — a move that raised eyebrows since it broke with a tradition of 36 years less than two weeks before the election.

 

Bezos hired ex-Wall Street Journal boss Will Lewis as his chief executive— despite protests from journalists at the newspaper who cited his alleged involvement in the UK phone hacking scandal.

“We recognize that this will be read in a range of ways, including as a tacit endorsement of one candidate, or as a condemnation of another, or as an abdication of responsibility. That is inevitable,” Lewis wrote.

 

“We don’t see it that way. We see it as consistent with the values the Post has always stood for and what we hope for in a leader: character and courage in service to the American ethic, veneration for the rule of law, and respect for human freedom in all its aspects.”

 

The decision sparked a backlash among staffers and readership — with scores of social media users proclaiming that they had cancelled their subscriptions to the paper.

 

One Washington Post reporter said she was left “heartbroken” when her mother cancelled her subscription over the nixed endorsement.

Robert Kagan, a member of the opinions section, resigned in protest. He said that Lewis’ explanation was “laughable” and that the decision not to endorse stemmed from an alleged deal between Bezos and former President Donald Trump.

Bezos’ space exploration company Blue Origin has contracts with the federal government to build a spacecraft to transport astronauts to and from the surface of the moon.

Soon-Shiong’s daughter recently said that the refusal to endorse Harris stemmed from dissatisfaction over the Biden administration’s Israel policies, though the billionaire denied that this was the case.

Hera asteroid mission’s CubeSat passengers signal home

The two CubeSat passengers aboard ESA’s Hera mission for planetary defence have exchanged their first signals with Earth, confirming their nominal status.

The pair were switched on to check out all their systems, marking the first operation of ESA CubeSats in deep space.

“Each CubeSat was activated for about an hour in turn, in live sessions with the ground to perform commissioning – what we call ‘are you alive?’ and ‘stowed checkout’ tests,” explains ESA’s Hera CubeSats Engineer Franco Perez Lissi.

 

“The pair are currently stowed within their Deep Space Deployers, but we were able to activate every onboard system in turn, including their platform avionics, instruments and the inter-satellite links they will use to talk to Hera, as well as spinning up and down their reaction wheels which will be employed for attitude control.”

 

Launched on 7 October, Hera is ESA’s first planetary defence mission, headed to the first Solar System body to have had its orbit shifted by human action: the Dimorphos asteroid, which was impacted by NASA’s DART spacecraft in 2022.

Travelling with Hera are two shoebox-sized ‘CubeSats’ built up from standardised 10-cm boxes.

These miniature spacecraft will fly closer to the asteroid than their mothership, taking additional risks to acquire valuable bonus data.

 

Juventas, produced for ESA by GOMspace in Luxembourg will make the first radar probe within an asteroid. while Milani, produced for ESA by Tyvak International in Italy, will perform multispectral mineral prospecting.

The commissioning took place from ESA’s ESOC mission control centre in Darmstadt in Germany, linked in turn to ESEC, the European Space Security and Education Centre, at Redu in Belgium.

This site hosts Hera’s CubeSat Mission Operations Centre, from where the CubeSats will be overseen once they are flying freely in space.

 

Juventas was activated on 17 October, at 4 million km away from Earth, while Milani followed on 24 October, nearly twice as far at 7.9 million km away.

The distances involved meant the team had to put up with tense waits for signals to pass between Earth and deep space, involving a 32.6 second round-trip delay for Juventas and a 52 second round-trip delay for Milani.

“During this CubeSat commissioning, we have not only confirmed the CubeSat instruments and systems work as planned but also validated the entire ground command infrastructure,” explains Sylvain Lodiot, Hera Operations Manager.

 

“This involves a complex setup where data are received here at the Hera Missions Operations Centre at ESOC but telemetry also goes to the CMOC at Redu, overseen by a Spacebel team, passed in turn to the CubeSat Mission Control Centres of the respective companies, to be checked in real time.

Verification of this arrangement is good preparation for the free-flying operational phase once Hera reaches Dimorphos.”

Andrea Zanotti, Milani’s Lead Software Engineer at Tyvak, adds: “Milani didn’t experience any computer resets or out of limits currents or voltages, despite its deep space environment which involves increased exposure to cosmic rays. The same is true of Juventas.”

 

Camiel Plevier, Juventas’s Lead Software Engineer at GomSpace, notes: “More than a week after launch, with ‘fridge’ temperatures of around 5°C in the Deep Space Deployers, the batteries of both CubeSats maintained a proper high state of charge.

And it was nice to see how the checkout activity inside the CubeSats consistently warmed the temperature sensors throughout the CubeSats and the Deep Space Deployers.”

The CubeSats will stay within their Deployers until the mission reaches Dimorphos towards the end of 2026, when they will be deployed at very low velocity of just a few centimetres per second. Any faster and – in the ultra-low gravitational field of the Great Pyramid-sized asteroid – they might risk being lost in space.

 

Franco adds: “This commissioning is a significant achievement for ESA and our industrial partners, involving many different interfaces that all had to work as planned: all the centres on Earth, then also on the Hera side, including the dedicated Life Support Interface Boards that connects the main spacecraft with the Deployers and CubeSats.

“The concept that a spacecraft can work with smaller companion spacecraft aboard them has been successfully demonstrated, which is going to be followed by more missions in the future, starting with ESA’s Ramses mission for planetary defence and then the Comet Interceptor spacecraft.”

From this point, the CubeSats will be switched on every two months during Hera’s cruise phase, to undergo routine operations such as checkouts, battery conditioning and software updates.

A Giant Structure in Space Challenges Our Understanding of The Universe

A colossal structure in the distant Universe is defying our understanding of how the Universe evolved.

In light that has traveled for 6.9 billion years to reach us, astronomers have found a giant, almost perfect ring of galaxies, some 1.3 billion light-years in diameter. It doesn't match any known structure or formation mechanism.

The Big Ring, as the structure has been named, could mean that we need to amend the standard model of cosmology.

 

The discovery, led by astronomer Alexia Lopez of the University of Central Lancashire, was presented at the 243rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society in January, and has been published in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics.

It's the second giant structure discovered by Lopez and her colleagues. The first, called the Giant Arc, is actually in the same part of the sky, at the same distance away.

When the arc's discovery was announced in 2021, it puzzled astronomers. The Big Ring only deepens the mystery.

 

"Neither of these two ultra-large structures is easy to explain in our current understanding of the universe," Lopez said in January.

"And their ultra-large sizes, distinctive shapes, and cosmological proximity must surely be telling us something important – but what exactly?"

The most immediate link seems to be with something called a Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO). These are giant, circular arrangements of galaxies found all throughout space.

They're actually spheres, the fossils of acoustic waves that propagated through the early Universe, and then froze when space became so diffuse acoustic waves could no longer travel.

 

The Big Ring is not a BAO. BAOs are all a fixed size of around 1 billion light-years in diameter. And thorough inspection of the Big Ring shows that it is more like a corkscrew shape that is aligned in such a way that it looks like a ring.

Which leaves the very unanswered question: What the heck is it? And what does it mean for the Cosmological Principle, which states that, in all directions, any given patch of space should look pretty much the same as all other patches of space?

"We expect matter to be evenly distributed everywhere in space when we view the universe on a large scale, so there should be no noticeable irregularities above a certain size," Lopez explained.

 

"Cosmologists calculate the current theoretical size limit of structures to be 1.2 billion light-years, yet both of these structures are much larger – the Giant Arc is almost three times bigger and the Big Ring's circumference is comparable to the Giant Arc's length."

But the size is just one of the problems. The other is what it means for cosmology, the study of the evolution of the Universe.

The current model is the one that currently fits the best with what we observe, but there are some features that are challenging to explain under its framework.

 

There are other models that have been put forward to address these features.

Under one such model, Roger Penrose's conformal cyclic cosmology, in which the Universe goes through endless Big Bang expansion cycles, ring structures are expected – although it's worth noting that conformal cyclic cosmology has significant problems of its own.

Another possibility is that the structures are a type of topological defect in the fabric of space-time known as cosmic strings.

These are thought to be like proton-wide wrinkles that emerged in the early Universe as space-time stretched, then froze into place.

 

We've not found much physical evidence of cosmic strings, but the theoretical evidence is pretty promising.

At the moment, nobody knows for sure what the Big Ring and the Giant Arc signify. They could just be chance arrangements of galaxies twirling across the sky, although the likelihood of that seems pretty small.

The best hope would be to find more such arrangements of galaxies, scattered throughout the Universe, hiding in plain sight.

 

"From current cosmological theories we didn't think structures on this scale were possible," Lopez said.

"We could expect maybe one exceedingly large structure in all our observable Universe. Yet, the Big Ring and the Giant Arc are two huge structures and are even cosmological neighbors, which is extraordinarily fascinating."

i have a question for stocks… i bought my first stock ever, DJT, donald j trump media… in mid to end of september, and it now made a profit of 130.02% … i didnt put in anything i couldnt afford to lose, but siince ive never played stock market before, i find the money i made very tempting to cash out.. i want to leave it in because otherwise would just sit in my savings and at least now its working for me…

Full paywalled article here. The harbor master isn't making this up. He wasn't alone on the rescue vessel ordered to stay clear of the American warships.

 

The little rescue boat at Christiansö was just checking up on some ships because thy didn't respond on radio. It was around the same time that the US Navy convoy led by USS Kearsage passed, but they moved at high speed and had AIS on.

I found a rescue vessel which left Christiansö late afternoon on the 21:st of Sept 2022, and headed in the direction of the northern explosions sites. It stopped half way for about 10 minutes (yellow pin) , 730PM before turning back.

 

Actually, the rescue trip of John Anker Nielsen came close to the USS Kearsarge convoy, and the US navy ships turned on their AIS about 15 minutes after the encounter.

 

John Anker started his trip towards the American war ships at 6:43PM on September 21, 2022. USS Kearsarge was "dark" at the time, and about 40 km away IF it held the same course and speed as it did after turning on AIS at 7:13PM. Where was Kearsarge when dark? John must have seen it on radar, or heard about it some other way before setting out. I will ask of course.

 

Here's a film dated Sept 19 2022 of Kearsarge leaving Gdansk. The trip to the site where she turned on AIS is about 12 hours at normal cruise speed, but she spent about 60 hours to get there, so there was time for other activities.

 

Seems like Arlington came from the North, having visited Visby the day before (September 20, 2022).

 

If Kearsarge just wanted to go home from Gdansk, it would have been closer to go south of Bornholm like the US military tanker McKinney did around the same time.

 

John Anker Nielsen responded to me by email, saying he "has nothing to add beyond what he said to Politikken"

for completeness. US destroyer USS Paul Ignatius was in Gdynia (right next to Gdansk in Poland) on the day of the explosions (September 26). Then it went out to the crime scene, masquerading in AIS messages as a greek container vessel. See red dots in graph below.

We know that it was Paul Ignatius "guarding the crime scene" because a reporter on board the danish investigator dive boat wrote "they could hear the radar cranking on Paul Ignatius"

Paul Ignatius finally left the Baltics on October 18. All of the ship movements documented in this thread were known and reported on Twitter soon after the explosions. The only "news" is that US Navy behaved strange near one of the the explosion sites on September 21, causing the rescue service at Christiansö to check up on them.

The big American warships leaving the explosion area on the evening Sept 21 were replaced by Danish and Swedish warships allegedly chasing Russian ships. Did they know about the bombs?

In December 2022, it was reported that a satellite company had found some "dark ships" in the Nord Stream rupture area a few days before the explosions.The reporting insinuated they were Russians, but considering that they found no other dark ships in the satellite SAR images, what they saw were likely the Americans.

NEW YORK (AP) — Investigators from various federal agencies launched an “interagency operation” on Monday at the troubled lockup in New York City where Sean “Diddy” Combs is being held.

 

The investigators from the Bureau of Prisons, the Justice Department’s inspector general’s office and other law enforcement agencies had descended on the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on Monday, the Bureau of Prisons said in statement to The Associated Press.

 

The law enforcement operation is “designed to achieve our shared goal of maintaining a safe environment for both our employees and the incarcerated individuals housed at MDC Brooklyn,” the agency said. Prison officials declined to provide specific details about the operation Monday morning.

 

But the move comes as the jail has faced increasing scrutiny over horrific conditions, rampant violence and multiple deaths and amid a push by the Justice Department and Bureau of Prisons to fix problems at the jail and hold perpetrators accountable.

 

Last month, federal prosecutors charged nine inmates in connection with a spate of attacks from April to August at the Metropolitan Detention Center, the only federal jail in New York City. The allegations made public last month detailed serious safety and security issues at the jail, including charges after two inmates were stabbed to death and another was speared in the spine with a makeshift icepick. A correctional officer was also charged with shooting at a car during an unauthorized high-speed chase.

 

The criminal charges offered a window into violence and dysfunction that has plagued the jail, which houses about 1,200 people, including Combs and Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the collapsed FTX cryptocurrency exchange.

 

In a statement on Monday, the Bureau of Prisons said its operation in Brooklyn was pre-planned and that there is “no active threat.”

 

The agency said it wouldn’t provide additional details about what exactly investigators were doing there on Monday until the operation is complete “in an effort to maintain the safety and security of all personnel inside the facility and the integrity of this operation.”

 

The facility, in an industrial area on the Brooklyn waterfront, has about 1,200 detainees, down from more than 1,600 in January. It’s used mainly for post-arrest detention for people awaiting trial in federal courts in Manhattan or Brooklyn. Other inmates are there to serve short sentences following convictions.

 

Those held at the Brooklyn jail have long complained about rampant violence, dreadful conditions, severe staffing shortages and the widespread smuggling of drugs and other contraband, some of it facilitated by employees. At the same time, they say they’ve been subject to frequent lockdowns and have been barred from leaving their cells for visits, calls, showers or exercise.
