Biden racing to pour weaponry into Ukraine – WSJ

The outgoing Biden administration is seeking to fully use funds allocated for Ukraine to deliver additional weapons to the country, The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing unnamed White House officials. The plan, however, is reportedly facing logistics hurdles as the US further depletes its already thinned out stockpiles.

 

Washington has more than $7 billion left in drawdown authority, enabling the Pentagon to transfer weapons and ammunition to Kiev, as well as another $2 billion to fund long-term equipment contracts for Ukraine, the WSJ noted.

 

The pending delivery involves some 500 anti-aircraft missiles for various systems, including Patriots and NASAMS, a senior Biden administration official has said. The cache of missiles is expected to get delivered to Ukraine in the next few weeks, where it will meet the country’s air defense needs for the rest of the year.

 

The plan, however, has already raised concerns that it would further deplete already-exhausted US weapons stockpiles, officials told the newspaper. Apart from that, funneling a large amount of weaponry within mere weeks is bound to lead to logistics problems and put a further strain on US capabilities, the officials warned.

 

The rush to get as many weapons to Ukraine as possible before US President Joe Biden’s term ends is intended to give Kiev an advantage and reinforce its “negotiating position,” according to the WSJ. Before the presidential election, Washington sought to deliver the weaponry by April, but Donald Trump’s win has apparently prompted the outgoing administration to accelerate the process.

The president-elect has long been critical of the largesse afforded Kiev and has repeatedly pledged to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine overnight, potentially even before assuming office officially. Trump, however, has provided little to no detail on how exactly he would do that.

 

The delivery is unlikely to meet Kiev’s ever-growing weaponry wish list. Separately, the WSJ reported that Washington has refused to give Ukraine additional ATACMS ballistic missiles. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has informed Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky that the call to violate long-standing US arms contracts and prioritize Ukraine over its customers awaiting the missiles of the type was “too much to ask.”

 

The Pentagon has been reluctant to send additional ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, arguing that the munitions of the type were not actually needed since Russia had already moved all the valuable assets from their reach.

Hollywood and its waning political influence are both following the same trajectory.

 

Every time there’s a US presidential election, much is made in the mainstream media of celebrity endorsements. Others promise to bail out of the country if their candidate doesn’t win. Because apparently the democracy they want is the one where the plebes do what they’re told at the voting booth by a handful of entertainers.

 

Richard Gere is moving to Spain now and the Western press suggests that it’s because he’s angry that Trump conflated terrorists with refugees crashing the US border. That’s actually an interesting debate. One that a guy who lives in a gated mansion on 32 acres, with 11 bathrooms, a guest cottage, and a pool, might be inclined to indulge, long before having to worry about actually grappling with the more glaring and pressing aspects of the immigration issue that the average citizen faces.

 

Trump’s reelection suggests that voters are too fed up with grossly unmanaged or mismanaged immigration to concern themselves with the details. Which is also why the average American didn’t lose their mind like the establishment did over Trump’s remarks about Haitian migrants in Ohio eating people’s pets. They just ripped off the audio of Trump’s voice and made videos on TikTok starring their own pets looking shocked about the possibility of being eaten. Debate raged about whether the assertion was even true, but it brought the immigration issue to the forefront and, in any case, people were going to vote based on their personal perceptions. Hollywood closed ranks with an omerta around Harvey Weinstein, ignoring his rampant sexual aggression for years, despite all their public preaching about feminism. Stars at awards show podiums cried about the state of humanity while privately partying with the likes of P. Diddy, now facing federal charges of sex trafficking and sexual abuse, and exploitation of women.

 

Diddy’s ex-girlfriend, entertainer Jennifer Lopez, spoke at a campaign rally for Kamala Harris and said that every Latino should be offended by a joke about Puerto Rico that a professional comedian made at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally. Yet Trump enjoyed a 14-point bump in this demographic compared to 2020. Guess they know humor when they hear it – which would explain why her “comedic” film Gigli flopped in 2003 and, more recently, Shotgun Wedding on Netflix.

Performer Taylor Swift, arguably the biggest celebrity in the world right now, was going to absolutely crush Trump by endorsing Harris, it was suggested. All her Swifties would dutifully fall in line like little bedazzled soldiers. “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift posted to Instagram on September 10.

 

What ended up happening instead is that fans of what several analysts have described as Swift’s ”white feminism” – white female voters – chose 53% in favor of Trump. Maybe they just figured that the guy whose primary concern is to ensure that they have the ability to actually afford the exorbitantly priced tickets to Swift’s concerts is more relevant than Harris’ virtue signaling – pandering to women by talking about abortion and to minorities by talking like Foghorn Leghorn?

 

I know what everyone’s thinking – who was the cast of that long-defunct show about the fake White House, The West Wing, voting for? Well, at least they must’ve thought that’s what everyone’s thinking. Since they went to the trouble of reuniting just to star in a pro-Harris ad. “We choose freedom. We choose Kamala Harris,” they said in a statement, signed by the likes of Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, and Mary McCormack. The ad, featuring the notoriously anti-war Sheen, was backed by the Lincoln Project, which is rife with neocons – bedfellows almost as strange as neocon Harris campaign surrogate and former congresswoman, Liz Cheney, being told by the left-leaning cast of ‘The View’ that she’d be a great secretary of defense, despite her support of the US-led wars that her dad, Dick, helped kick off.

 

Clearly, the election didn’t work out the way that many of these celebrities had hoped. Given their resources and options, I’m sure they’ll get over it, in whichever mansion they choose to inhabit. They’d have gotten over it in any case – unlike so many of the average people they ultimately failed to manipulate.

President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, the first phone conversation between the two men since Trump won the election,said several people familiar with the matter.

During the call, which Trump took from his resort in Florida, he advised the Russian president not to escalate the war in Ukraine and reminded him of Washington’s sizable military presence in Europe, said a person familiar with the call, who, like others interviewed for this story, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter. The two men discussed the goal of peace on the European continent and Trump expressed an interest in follow-up conversationsto discuss “the resolution of Ukraine’s war soon,” one of the people said.

 

In his presidential campaign, Trump said he would bring an immediate end to the war in Ukraine, though did not offer details about how he intended to do so. He has signaled privately that he would support a deal where Russia kept some captured territory, and during the call he briefly raised the issue of land, people familiar with the matter said.

 

The call, which has not been previously reported, comes amid general uncertainty abouthow Trump will reset the world’s diplomatic chessboard of U.S. allies and adversariesafter his decisive victory on Tuesday. Trump told NBC on Thursday that he had spoken to about 70 world leaders since the election, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — a call that Elon Musk also joined.

News of the call comes as Ukraine on Sunday launched a major drone attack on Moscowand five other Russian regions, injuring one person and forcing three airports to temporarily halt operations, officials in Moscow said.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defense systems intercepted 84 Ukrainian drones over the Moscow, Bryansk, Oryol, Kaluga, Kursk and Tula regions. Ukrainian commanders have told The Washington Post that North Korean troops are also in Russia’s neighboring Belgorod region.

AZ Supreme Court denies ballot curing deadline extension

The deadline was set for 5 p.m. Sunday

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Arizona Supreme Court denied an emergency petition to extend the ballot curing deadline in the state.

 

The Court said the requested extension is unnecessary based on information from the Secretary of State’s website.

 

The ACLU and LULAC claimed that county recorders had not begun the signature verification and curing process for thousands of remaining ballots, but that was debunked.

 

The Court collected information from eight counties, including Maricopa County. In a press release, the Court said no county recorder said they can’t comply with the 5 p.m. Sunday deadline.

 

Maricopa County specifically told the Court: “Early ballot ‘processing’ does not mean signatureCourtfication. And the fact of the matter is, the Maricopa County Recorder finished signature verification of the last remaining early ballot affidavit signatures on the morning of Fri., Nov. 8, 2024.”

Most basic iodized salt has bullshit additives for "anti-caking" purposes. Who knows how regulated the iodine in it is anyway? Probably Lugol's or straight-up potassium iodide is still the best bet. Moar sodium in general is not bad per se, but most people are probably too deficient in potassium to get away with it. Sodium/potassium balance each other while magnesium/calcium balance other. Sodium and calcium are vilified, but hardly anybody pushes for moar dietary potassium and magnesium. Potassium can be tricky in higher doses and some magnesium foods can cause kidney stones so…nobody advocates for it in the mainstream.

WASHINGTON—Despite calls from some liberal activists for Justice Sonia Sotomayor to step down while Democrats can fill her seat before Inauguration Day,she has no plans to retire from the Supreme Court, people close to the justice said.

 

“This is no time to lose her important voice on the court. She just turned 70 and takes better care of herself than anyone I know,” said one person close to the justice, suggesting that progressives turn their attention to other ways of safeguarding the Constitution after President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

 

Sotomayor, appointed in 2009 by then President Barack Obama, is the senior member of the court’s liberal minority, which by custom makes her its leader. Outnumbered by six conservatives, including three appointed by Trump during his first term, the liberals have increasingly been reduced to dissenting opinions that argue the majority has made grave errors on matters from abortion rights to presidential power.

 

Sotomayor, who has written a bestselling memoir and children’s books, appeared on “Sesame Street,” and championed civics education, is among the better-known justices. In February, a Marquette Law School pollfound that while many Americans were unfamiliar with the court’s membership, Sotomayor was viewed more favorably than any other justice.

 

“This would probably be a good day for Sotomayor to retire,” David Dayen, executive editor of the liberal American Prospect magazine, wrote the day after the election on social media. The same day, the former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan, noting the justice has had Type 1 diabetes since childhood, resurfaced his April op-ed suggesting that it was time for Sotomayor to go.

 

Animating the discussion of Sotomayor—and of potential retirements by conservative justices of similar age—is Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death at age 87. Ginsburg had resisted calls from liberals to step down in the early 2010s while Obama and the Democrats held appointment power. Her death in September 2020 allowed Trump to solidify the court’s conservative majority by appointing Justice Amy Coney Barrett shortly before Democrats captured both the White House and Senate.

 

Fears of further diminution of the liberal minority led some on the left to pressure Justice Stephen Breyer to step down soon after President Biden and Senate Democrats took over in 2021, with one group sending a billboard truck to Capitol Hill bearing the message, “Breyer, Retire.” He stepped down in 2022 at age 83, allowing Biden to replace him with Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

 

Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, was among the first prominent legal progressives to call on Ginsburg to retire during the Obama presidency, with a March 2014 op-ed in the Los Angeles Times.

Chemerinsky said Saturday that conditions are different now.

 

“It is far more uncertain that the Democrats could confirm a successor than in summer 2014,” he said. “And Sotomayor is 70,” while Ginsburg was 81 when he urged her to step down.

 

Some conservatives, equally cognizant that political winds and health conditions can change rapidly, have suggested that the senior stalwarts of the court’s right wing, Justices Clarence Thomas, 76, and Samuel Alito, 74, might retire before the 2026 midterm elections.

“Justice Sam Alito is gleefully packing up his chambers,” Mike Davis, a conservative legal activist close to Trump, said on social media after Tuesday’s election.

 

Others find such talk impolitic. Treating Thomas and Alito “like meat that has reached its expiration date is unwise, uninformed, and, frankly, just crass,” Leonard Leo, a leader of the Federalist Society and onetime judicial adviser to Trump, said Friday.Neither justice has publicly indicated an interest in retirement.
