Winter Haven commissioners vote to remove fluoride from water, citing RFK Jr.

The Winter Haven City Commission voted Tuesday to stop adding fluoride to drinking water after a lengthy public comment period where residents shared health concerns.

Commissioners voted 3-2 to remove the fluoride by January 1, or on a date “as soon as reasonably practical thereafter.”

The resolution cited a federal court decision that “expressed concerns regarding the effects of fluoride in public water supply.” The court ordered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to research the effects of fluoridated water and crack down on regulating it.

For many commission members and audience members, the issue at hand was government overreach.

“The government really should not be involved in healthcare, or what goes into the bodies of citizens,” Mayor Pro Tem Brian Yates said, after hinting that fluoride in the water supply and his hyperthyroidism may be correlated. “Those really should be left up to the patient and the (healthcare) provider.”

Yates later denied that a reported 9,000 children face significant barriers to accessing fluoride because of existing public health services. Commissioner Brad Dantzler suggested giving some of the estimated $48,000 saved by adopting the resolution to charities that can provide dental health products.

Commissioner Clifton E. Dollison, who was one of the two dissenting votes, along with Mayor Nathaniel J. Birdsong, Jr., said he may be “the poster child” for the benefits of fluoridated water.

“My mother had nine children. We grew up poor, lived in a project. I never saw a dentist until I was an adult,” Dollison said. “I went to the dentist, got my first checkup … he said, ‘You do not have a cavity in your head. You must have lived in a place where there was fluoride’.”

Removing fluoride would be doing away with something beneficial to “those less fortunate” in the community, according to Dollison.

Dantzler said, in response to correspondence with dental professionals, that city commissioners acknowledge that fluoride is beneficial for dental health, but they have concerns about what may happen when it “gets in the gut.”

The commissioner cited concerns posed by 2024 Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and falsely stated that President-Elect Donald Trump named him to a high-ranking health policy position. Multiple residents repeated this during public comment.

“I’ll tell you that after the recent election, President Trump has named Mr. Kennedy to be his H-something-something director, and Mr. Kennedy has made it well known and has publicly said that he wants fluoride out of the water around the entire country,” Dantzler said. “So this issue, we may be at the front of it, but this issue is coming just based upon current events and what’s going on in Washington D.C.”

As pointed out by Dantzler and some public commenters, the discussion echoed those during meetings in the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is reminiscent of what happened with COVID,” Dantzler said. “All four of us, with exception of Commissioner Dollison, were here during COVID and asked to make medical decisions on things that were very complicated, and we don’t completely understand.”

Winter Haven resident Hannah Bush described purchasing a reverse-osmosis filter to remove perceived toxins from her family’s drinking water, but said it wasn’t enough to get rid of the fluoride. She also took issue with the chemical being used in dental health products.

“I can get false teeth if needed. I only have one brain,” Bush said.

In September, a federal judge in California ruled the environmental protection agency must strengthen regulations on fluoride in drinking water, saying levels that are too high could pose a risk to the intellectual development of children.

“Now if the EPA comes out and says it’s all fine, we will add it back in, but as it stands right now, I think we made the right decision to protect children,” Dantzler said.

Is fluoride a “toxic” chemical? Why is it added to drinking water?

In 1950, federal officials endorsed water fluoridation to prevent tooth decay, and continued to promote it even after fluoride toothpaste brands hit the market several years later. Though fluoride can come from a number of sources, drinking water is the main source for Americans, researchers say.

Officials lowered their recommendation for drinking water fluoride levels in 2015 to address a tooth condition called fluorosis, that can cause splotches on teeth and was becoming more common in U.S. kids.

In August, a federal agency determined “with moderate confidence” that there is a link between higher levels of fluoride exposure and lower IQ in kids. The National Toxicology Program based its conclusion on studies involving fluoride levels at about twice the recommended limit for drinking water.

A federal judge later cited that study in ordering the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to further regulate fluoride in drinking water. U.S. District Judge Edward Chen cautioned that it’s not certain that the amount of fluoride typically added to water is causing lower IQ in kids, but he concluded that mounting research points to an unreasonable risk that it could be. He ordered the EPA to take steps to lower that risk, but didn’t say what those measures should be.

Donald Trump’s social media company is in advanced talks to buy Bakkt, a cryptocurrency trading venue owned by Intercontinental Exchange, as it pushes to expand beyond online conversation.

 

The US president-elect’s Trump Media and Technology Group, in which he has pledged to retain his 53 per cent stake, is closing in on an all-share purchase of Bakkt, said two people with knowledge of the talks. The valuation under discussion was not immediately clear but Bakkt’s market capitalisation stood at just over $150mn on Monday.

 

TMTG, which operates Truth Social, has become one of the most actively traded US stocks since Trump’s election victory as retail investors try to profit on its often-volatile trading moves. Although it has reported just $2.6mn in revenues this year, TMTG has a $6bn equity valuation, giving its management a valuable currency with which to buy other companies.

 

Bakkt shares soared 162 per cent after the FT reported the talks. TMTG shares were up about 16.7 per cent.

 

A successful deal would deepen Trump’s move into the cryptocurrency market after he began promoting a new crypto venture set up by longtime business partners, World Liberty Financial, from which he stands to earn significant fees. Crypto markets have also soared following his election victory, with bitcoin up more than 30 per cent on speculation that his administration would enact favourable legislation for the industry.

Building a digital army: UN peacekeepers fight deadly disinformation

With smartphones, editing apps, and innovative approaches, some UN peacekeeping operations across the world are building a “digital army” aimed at combating mis- and disinformation on social media networks and beyond.

 

Designing ways to fight back against falsehoods that can trigger tensions, violence, or even death, the UN has been monitoring how mis- and disinformation and hate speech can attack health, security, stability as well as progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

“It has become clear that business as usual is not an option,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a policy brief launched in June on information integrity on digital platforms.

 

“The ability to disseminate large-scale disinformation to undermine scientifically established facts poses an existential risk to humanity and endangers democratic institutions and fundamental human rights,” he wrote in the brief.

 

Disinformation can be dangerous in other ways. Several UN missions have reported social media campaigns in recent years targeting their peacekeeping work.

 

In 2019, the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), known by its French acronym MONUSCO, raised grave concerns about social media disinformation campaigns calling for violence against peacekeepers during an Ebola epidemic and following a deadly attack by an armed group in the restive eastern region.

 

By 2022, the Security Council had adjusted the mandates of its four largest peacekeeping operations – DRC, Central African Republic (CAR), Mali, and South Sudan – and added the task of preventing disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining a mission’s credibility

 

“This is a war that is going on through social media, the radio, and traditional news outlets,” said Bintou Keita, who heads MONUSCO. Fighting deadly disinformation has been a “painful curve” to learn of this new battlefield, but the mission has now become proactive on social and other media platforms, to help stop its spread, she added.

 

To fight back against disinformation, UN peacekeepers are putting new tools into the hands of civilians of all ages, including 15-year-old Blessing Kasasi in DRC.

 

An activist advocating for the rights of women and children, Ms. Kasasi readily joined a workshop in the capital city of Kinshasa, with 30 young people who learned about detecting “fake news” and countering it with the most effective weapon: the truth.

 

Guillaume Kingh-Farel, one of the workshop trainers, said disinformation is “used as a weapon of war to undermine MONUSCO’s peace efforts in the DRC”.

 

As such, the MONUSCO-supported workshop to train “a digital army capable of detecting false information” by producing content with the help of a smartphone and editing software and simultaneously spreading objective, credible information through “relay clubs” that disseminate these messages through their networks.

 

“From a smartphone, I will produce videos to echo good information,” Ms. Kasasi said after the workshop.

 

For UN peace operations, some communities they engage are welcoming the new approaches this summer.

 

In Mali, where a transitional Government has been in power since a coup in 2021, the UN mission, MINUSMA, hosted the first of its kind blogger festival, attracting nearly 400 participants in Mopti in early June.

 

“With the advance of technology, digital media is increasingly being used to spread misinformation,” said a popular local blogger who attended the event. “A festival to combat misinformation is an innovative approach to overcome this challenge, a useful means for deconstructing hate speech and fake news.”

 

By the end of June, at the Malian Government’s request, the UN Security Council terminated the mission, which is slated for a complete withdrawal from the country by 1 January 2024.

 

Other efforts are unfolding elsewhere. In early August, in Abyei, a contested zone straddling Sudan and South Sudan, the UN mission there, UNISFA, launched Voice of Peace, an internet radio station aimed at countering hate speech, and fake news.

 

Meanwhile, in DR Congo, MONUSCO’s initiatives continue to reach communities plagued by disinformation-triggered tensions. This includes recruiting digital experts, building multimedia products, and reaching out to communities, especially social media savvy youth, mission chief Ms. Keita said.

 

With these tools, she said MONUSCO has been trying to “beef up our capacity to monitor and to be present on digital platforms in such a way that we are not going to always be in a reactive mode, but in an anticipatory mode”.

British Airways passengers are stranded on the tarmac in multiple airports in the UK and internationally after a "technical issue" disrupted operations.

The problems started at around 17:00 on Monday, with passengers posting to social media that they were standing in the cold waiting to find out what was happening to their flights.

British Airways has confirmed there is a problem affecting some of its computer systems that is causing delays.

But it said no flights were currently being cancelled.

"Flights are operating and we’ll finish our schedule this evening as planned. No cancellations. Some delays. All of our critical operations are running," BA said in a statement.

It is not clear how widespread the disruption is, but it is reported to have affected flights globally, as well as some domestic UK flights.

One passenger wrote on X that they were "being made to stand on the tarmac in a very cold Verona waiting for an already delayed flight".

Others said they were trying to check in for flights and the "systems are down" or that technical problems had prevented them from booking flights.

Sources within the airline suggest the situation is being brought under control, but there are concerns that delays this evening could have a knock-on effect on Tuesday's flights.

Some travellers commenting on social media said they had been told that pilots were unable to generate loading data for their aircraft and have been struggling to get through to colleagues by phone.

A spokesperson for Heathrow Airport said it was aware of the technical problems at BA, but that its own systems were operating normally.

It is not the first time BA has faced severe disruption due to an IT failure. In May last year, flights were grounded. A similar thing happened in spring 2017, disrupting Bank Holiday plans, and in February 2020.

Judy Shelton has spent her career advocating for sound money. Her latest book, Good as Gold: How to Unleash the Power of Sound Money, makes an up-to-date case for reinstituting a gold standard. Her intriguing conclusion is that the dollar can be reconnected to gold by simply issuing federal treasury bonds with gold-redeemability clauses. The book also addresses recent events and important current debates about monetary systems like whether central bankers should have wide policy discretion, whether fixed or floating exchange rates are better for economic growth, and what happens when countries manipulate their currency to boost exports.

 

Dr. Shelton engages these questions in the context of academic debates, but she also uses the lens of rational economic planning to evaluate how the monetary system contributes to or detracts from economic growth. At the end of the day, the case for sound money rests on the claim that it will generate more stable and greater long-run economic prosperity. Dr. Shelton believes sound money will do just that. But what would such a sound money regime look like?

 

Although Dr. Shelton would prefer a system along the lines of a classical gold standard, she would probably be content with other monetary systems that dramatically reduced the discretion of policymakers. The real problem with our current monetary regime is not primarily technical. It is behavioral. Because public officials have strong incentives to inflate the currency, bail out various corporations, and underwrite extensive government borrowing, they do a poor job conserving the value of fiat currency or providing a predictable stable system of interest rates, credit, liquidity, etc.

 

In the first couple chapters of Good as Gold, Dr. Shelton takes the Federal Reserve to task. The wide discretion Fed officials can exercise makes monetary policy unpredictable. Although Fed officials argue that their decisions are countercyclical, that may not always be the case. As Milton Friedman famously noted, the effects of monetary policy decisions have “long and variable” lags. Despite claims to being “data-driven,” Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decisions remain unpredictable. Data can change rapidly and unpredictably, which can make policy change rapid and unpredictable too.

Another problem is that the “data-driven” mantra invokes the assumption that the data always clearly indicate what ought to be done. In fact, this is rarely the case. Not only do a wide variety of inflation measures exist, but there are also a wide range of time intervals over which to compare inflation trends. But that’s not the worst of it!

 

Employment, unemployment, GDP, and a host of other economic numbers suggest different things are going on in the economy. Retailers expect strong record spending this holiday season while the NY Fed just released a study where the number of people reporting concern about their ability to make debt payments hit its highest level since 2020. How to weigh these various factors is far from clear.

 

Another problem with Fed policy is the rapid change in its interest rate targets. Three years ago, the short-run interest rate was ~.5 percent. Within two years it was over 5 percent. That rapid change created many issues in the economy, only some of which we have recognized. The rate-hike cycle created significant turmoil in the banking industry with Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank failing entirely while many large regional banks shrank or were enfolded into larger national banks.

 

The commercial real estate market has also been upended. While the owners of office buildings were already facing strong headwinds from the pandemic’s normalization of remote work, the Fed delivered a one-two punch when it raised interest rates. Most large commercial real estate investors use variable rate debt to finance their portfolios – which means the interest rate they pay moves with the market. Adding a couple percentage points to one’s debt rapidly changes the viability of a venture. In addition to higher debt-servicing costs, commercial real estate investors saw the market value of their holdings decline precipitously as buyers disappeared, financing costs rose, and future potential cash flows were more heavily discounted.

 

The previous rate-hike cycle in 2006 and 2007 preceded a major recession and financial crisis. Even as the Fed creates disruptions in markets, it has also overseen the relentless decline in the value of the dollar – ironically in the name of pursuing their mandate to maintain price stability. A dollar in 2024 is worth what a quarter was in 1980 and what a dime was in 1965. And a 2024 dollar is worth about what a penny was worth in 1900.

LNG Tankers Divert to Europe From Asia After Russia Halts Supplies to Austria’s OMV

LONDON, Nov 18 (Reuters) – At least five cargoes of liquefied natural gas have diverted from Asia to Europe in the past few days, drawn by higher gas prices on the continent after Russia’s Gazprom halted supplies to Austria’s OMV, data from analytics firm Kpler showed.

 

On Saturday Gazprom halted supplies to top Austrian gas importer OMV after OMV threatened to impound some of the Russian state firm’s gas as compensation for an arbitration it had won over a contractual dispute.

 

Gazprom notified OMV of the planned halt on Friday, causing European gas prices at the Dutch TTF hub to surge, making it more profitable to send gas to Europe rather than Asia.

 

“The JKM-TTF spread flipped into negative territory last week amid Russian pipeline gas supply concerns and an upcoming cold spell, which saw traders divert LNG cargoes away from Asia and towards Europe,” said Laura Page, manager of gas and LNG insight at Kpler.

 

The benchmark front-month contract at the Dutch TTF hub was trading at 46.00 euros per megawatt hour on Monday, or $14.49 per mmBtu, the highest level since Nov. 23, 2023. The Asian benchmark Japan Korea Marker (JKM) was trading at around $14/mmBtu, LSEG data showed.

 

Vivert City LNG tanker, which loaded a cargo from Equatorial Guinea and was heading to Bangladesh, diverted on Friday and is now heading towards Britain’s South Hook terminal.

 

Gaslog Windsor tanker, which had a cargo loaded with U.S. LNG from Sabine Pass that was initially headed to China, changed its destination on Friday towards Britain’s Isle of Grain terminal.

 

BW Lesmes tanker had a cargo loaded form Nigeria and was initially headed to China but changed direction towards Britain’s Isle of Grain.

 

“One of the main reasons ships are switching to the UK, though, is likely that the UK’s terminals weren’t so busy as some of the main Continental terminals, meaning there were more spare unloading slots for traders to access when they decided to divert Asian cargoes to Europe,” said Alex Froley, senior LNG analyst at data intelligence firm ICIS.

 

The Diamond Gas Crystal, originally headed to South Korea, has switched back and is now heading to the Dutch Gate terminal.

 

The Flex Vigilant tanker has diverted from China and is now headed to Europe, awaiting orders.

 

Russian gas exports through Ukraine to Europe – the main transit route for Russian gas to the EU – were stable on Monday, according to Gazprom.

 

Ukraine has said it will not extend a gas transit deal with Russia once a five-year agreement expires at the end of the year.

This downward march in the value of the dollar creates problems. It drives up asset prices, favoring those who have investment savvy while eating away at the value of people’s savings and undermining the prosperity of those on fixed incomes. The steady fall of the dollar also distorts price calculations and expectations.

 

I’ve argued elsewhere that the Fed has been a prime culprit in boosting housing prices and, as a result, creating a “transitional gains trap” where homeowners with significant equity, juiced in large part by easy money, have organized to protect their equity by putting up local legal barriers to building new housing.

 

But Good as Gold includes much more than criticism of the Fed. Dr. Shelton points out that unstable money and exchange rates create costs to doing business. International firms must devote time, energy, and money to protect themselves from erratic fluctuations in currency exchange rates. Creating these “hedges” to protect their profitability from exchange-rate risk necessitates additional classes of assets and asset traders – contributing to greater “financialization” of the economy. While the services being offered create real value for corporations, they come at a price and would not be needed under more stable monetary arrangements.

 

Besides the frictions and costs that unstable money introduces into day-to-day business operations, it also creates long-term consequences when it comes to investing. If certain exchange rates can move 15 percent, 30 percent, or more in a single year, Dr. Shelton asks, then how can investors rationally allocate capital based on real factors and comparative advantage? The structure and mix of capital investment we currently have across countries and within the same country looks very different than it would in a world of stable money.

 

Dr. Shelton makes this point indirectly in a fascinating chapter about the monetary debate between Milton Friedman and Robert Mundell. Both were staunch advocates of free markets, but they differed in what monetary regime they thought best. Friedman argued in favor of freely floating exchange rates set by market participants. In this world, governments would feel pressure from markets, in the form of capital outflows, if they engaged in domestic monetary policy shenanigans. Mundell, on the other hand, favored more stability in exchange rates that would require domestic prices to adapt to changes in trade and capital flows. Friedman and Mundell both agreed, however, that government officials and central bankers should have very little discretion in how they managed a country’s monetary system.

In a later chapter, Shelton offers the problem of “currency manipulation” as a reason for implementing a sound money regime. Her argument basically asserts that countries that actively depreciate or weaken their domestic currency experience short-run benefits (in the form of more competitive exports) and long-term costs (in the form of inflation and capital outflows). Other countries, however, feel short-run pain as their exports decline and their factories shut down – even though they also receive cheaper goods and reallocate much of the displaced labor and capital. I find this line of reasoning a bit curious.

 

Shelton rightly champions free trade and argues that it works best when countries do not artificially manipulate the value of their currencies. No objection here. But I am not convinced that a sound money regime, even a gold standard, would change other countries’ incentives to devalue their currency. Gold convertibility of one currency does not prevent the issuer of a different fiat currency from issuing large amounts of that fiat currency to reduce the relative price of its exports.

 

I suppose one could argue (and Dr. Shelton does) that currency manipulation becomes easier to discern because currencies will be valued in terms of a fixed standard (gold), rather than in terms of another fluctuating fiat currency. For example, the price of gold in terms of dollars increased by 77 percent from May 2014 to May 2024.

 

The currencies of the largest trade partners with the US lost far more value relative to gold in that period: Euros (129 percent), Mexican Peso (131 percent), Canadian dollar (122 percent), Chinese yuan (105 percent), and Japanese yen (165 percent). But that probably matters relatively little to the devaluing regime. Using gold as a benchmark might reveal relative changes in the value of currencies better. It could also defuse the language of “currency manipulation.”

Instead of attributing motives to foreign central bankers, policy makers could set relatively straight-forward criteria for when another country’s currency declines in a distortive way. Shelton suggests that some level of tariffs should be imposed in response to another country’s currency devaluation to offset the monetary distortion to international trade. This idea may not be crazy from a purely technical standpoint, yet I would hesitate to recommend it because of the likely distortions and co-opting of such policies by special interests. I also question whether the costs of not imposing tariffs on depreciating currencies is as high as Dr. Shelton believes.

 

Sound money advocates like Shelton must explain how we could get to a sound money regime. On the one hand, advocating a gold standard seems archaic and implausible. On the other hand, it would not be technically difficult to implement. And, in fact, given the dominance of the US dollar, if another major currency, such as the Euro, also chose to move back to gold redeemability, it is not hard to imagine other major currencies (Yen, Yuan, Pound, etc.) following suit. The political difficulty, of course, is getting the US to take the first step and then getting the EU to follow suit.

 

The odds of successful reform are highest when pursuing the easiest path to transition the current system to a sound monetary regime. Abolishing the Federal Reserve is not on that path. So tying dollars back to gold using the Fed makes more sense than moving back to a pre-Fed world. Similarly, constraining the FOMC seems far more plausible than abolishing it.

It may be worth raising a few other important secondary questions. At what price will the currency be convertible into gold? Dr. Shelton has suggested that incorporating a gold clause in Treasury bonds could be a good method for discovering the right price of convertibility. In fact, putting gold convertibility into government bond contracts may be sufficient, in and of itself, to tie dollars back to gold.

 

Afterall, depreciation of dollars would create consequences for the federal government and the Federal Reserve, the very institutions primarily responsible for managing the dollar and maintaining the monetary system. Shelton also makes the important point that currency should be seen as being like a weight or measure – something standardized for the public to use. It should not be viewed as a policy instrument or lever for managing the economy. This simple point rarely arises in modern commentary on the Fed and on monetary policy – yet it has deep legal and historical roots in the American founding and beyond.

Another benefit of moving to gold redeemability for US bonds is that it utilizes US gold reserves more effectively. Currently, the US is the largest holder of gold in the world. But ironically, that gold is severely undervalued on the government’s ledger. Its book value is less than two percent of its market value (i. e. on the ledger the gold is valued at less than $50/oz when its market value is over $2700/oz). Offering gold redeemability might also open up the option for extremely long-dated debt (50 years or more) and lower interest rates because the most significant risk to lending to the federal government, the devaluation of future dollars, has been taken off the table.

 

The likely benefits of such bonds are so significant that it may seem surprising that they have not been implemented. The problem, of course, is that this form of bond would reveal the man behind the curtain. It would show that government officials can and do play fast and loose with the dollar and with the US financial system to enable themselves and their friends a free hand to borrow and spend, and to actively “manage” the economy.

 

Dr. Shelton’s proposed changes will be vigorously resisted by those who benefit from the existing status quo – large commercial banks and financial institutions, Federal Reserve officials and bureaucrats, politicians and regulators – everyone who benefits from the Fed’s tendency to loose monetary policy. Still advocates of freedom and prosperity should continue to make the arguments and offer proposals for moving to a sound monetary regime.

 

And that is exactly what Dr. Shelton does in Good as Gold.

The Library of Congress said hackers broke into its communications systems andwere able to read its email correspondence with congressional offices for most of this year.

 

In a private notification sent Friday to some congressional offices, obtained by NBC News, the Library of Congress said that hackers “accessed email communications between congressional offices and some Library staff, including the Congressional Research Service.” The hackers had access from January until September, the notification said.

 

The Library of Congress, the world’s largest library, offers a dedicated research staff for Congress. Last year, it gave congressional staffers more than 76,000 custom responses to inquiries, according to its most recent annual report.

 

Bill Ryan, director of communications at the Library of Congress, told NBC News in an email that the software vulnerability the hackers used to gain access has been “mitigated.”“The Library has referred the matter to law enforcement and is also conducting its own analysis of the breach,” Ryan said.

 

The notice did not cite who was behind the hack, only referring to the hackers as “the adversary,” a term sometimes used in the cybersecurity industry.

 

Countries with strong cyber espionage operations, including the United States, routinely try to target adversarial countries’ government networks and lawmakers’ communications in order to gather intelligence. In recent years,

China and Russia, which both have strong cyber espionage agencies, have conducted sophisticated hacking operations to spy on the U.S. government.

Four years ago, the U.S. accused Russian cyber spies of hacking a commonly used software made by a company called SolarWinds, giving those hackers access to multiple U.S. agencies, as well as hundreds of private companies.

The Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., previously called the attribution “groundless.”

 

The U.S. has also accused China of multiple cyberespionage operations against the country, most recently one that hacked into several American telecommunications companies to spy on both parties’ recent presidential campaigns, as well as the staff of outgoing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy previously declined to comment.

Health care organization launches ‘Stop RFK War Room’

Group aims to convince swing GOP senators.

Democratic-aligned health care advocacy groups are putting together a strategy to fight Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination to be HHS secretary.

 

During an organizing call on Monday, the details of which have not been reported publicly,more than 200 people from several dozen of those groups, along with other advocacy organizations, discussed strategies to oppose Kennedy’s nomination. That included which Republican senators to targetand the most effective way to talk to them, according to Brad Woodhouse, executive director of Protect Our Care.

 

“We’re nowhere near conceding he’s going to be the next HHS secretary,” he said.

 

On the call,Woodhouse’s organization launched a new “Stop RFK War Room” effort focused on persuading not only GOP moderates like Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, but others like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who survived polio, or Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who is up for reelection in 2026. Normally, the group would be prioritizing its lame duck work, but it sees Kennedy as such a serious threat that it’s starting now and delaying its lame duck work until after Thanksgiving, Woodhouse said.

 

Protect Our Care is hiring teams in several states, including Alaska, Idaho, Maine and West Virginia, to lobby senators at the state and local level through experts and personal stories, with events slated to begin as soon as next week.

 

Woodhouse acknowledged that while some of Kennedy’s ideas might have broader support — like his efforts to ban certain food additives — his views on vaccines and his plans to cut the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration are “too dangerous” to take his nomination laying down.

 

“Just because Hannibal Lecter has a couple good ideas on something, doesn’t mean I want to invite Hannibal Lecter to dinner,” he said.

There's a security guard company where I live that has I'd say about 95% foreign born with accents. Social media influencers were a hot topic during the 2024 presidential race as both parties courted creators ahead of the election.Now, a new Pew Research Center survey reveals just how impactful so-called news influencers are in the current information ecosystem.About 21% of U.S. adults are turning to news influencers for information, with most saying creators “helped them better understand current events and civic issues,” according to the study.

 

The number washigher among young adults, with 37% of people ages 18 to 29 saying they turn to influencers for news. Pew surveyed 10,000 adults and analyzed 500 news influencers, which it defined as individuals who regularly post about current events and have over 100,000 followers on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube.

 

“News influencers have emerged as one of the key alternatives to traditional outlets as a news and information source for a lot of people, especially younger folks,” said the study’s co-author Galen Stocking, a senior computational social scientist at Pew Research Center, in a news release. “And these influencers have really reached new levels of attention and prominence this year amid the presidential election.”

 

The rise of social media influencers, and in particular news-focused creators, has been slowly embraced by politicians in recent years. Almost a decade ago, then-President Barack Obama surprised some by granting interviews to major YouTube creators.

 

Since then, the influencer world has continued to grow, culminating in an election cycle in which everyone from long-form podcasters to short-form video creators landed candidate interviews, generating hundreds of millions of views.

 

This year’s Democratic convention in Chicago was the first to open its doors to social media content creators, credentialing 200 of them for the four-day event in an effort to connect with younger audiences. The Republican convention in Milwaukee hosted more than 70 influencers as part of a content creator program.

 

Throughout the election, young creators were also driving messaging to their audiences on political topics, including Project 2025, a conservative policy road map from the Heritage Foundation aimed at laying the groundwork for a future Republican administration.

 

Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris both appeared on podcasts hosted by popular online personalities ahead of the election. Trump, now the president-elect, was a guest on various shows appealing to men including “This Past Weekend With Theo Von” and “The Joe Rogan Experience.” Meanwhile, Harris was on an episode of “Call Her Daddy,” a podcast hosted by Alex Cooper that is popular with women.

 

During Trump’s celebration on election night, social media personalities including Rogan, Von, the Nelk Boys, Adin Ross and the hosts of podcast “Bussin’ With the Boys” were given a shoutout onstage by Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White.

 

After Trump’s win,there was debate on the left over how to appeal to young people. Some suggested ways to amplify left-leaning spaces online,including the creation of a Democratic version of Rogan.

 

Across platforms,Pew found that male news influencers outnumber women roughly 2-to-1, and influencers with an explicit political orientation lean conservative. The exception is TikTok, where the gender gap is 5% and news influencers with an explicit political orientation lean liberal.

The U.S. has moved to counter China’s investments in a mega port in Peru with the Department of State funding an initiative that will establish a sister relationship between the ports of Hueneme in California and Paita in Peru.

 

As China’s President Xi Jinping inaugurated the $3.5 billion megaport of Chancay, South America’s first Beijing-funded port infrastructure project, the U.S announced that Hueneme and Paita will establish a sister port relationship, a move that is largely designed to safeguard Washington’s interest. It was a part of a series of agreements the U.S. announced with Peru timed to the start of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum 2024.

 

The two ports signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that defines the relationship, with the deliverables being fostering trade relations, enhancing commercial exchanges, and promoting economic development. The key focus areas will include improving transparency in procurement, sharing best practices in port management, exploring green energy initiatives, and collaborating on sustainable port development strategies.

 

The U.S. embassy in Peru said in a statement that the Department of State is funding the initiative but did not reveal the amount of commitments.

 

The U.S. wants to secure its interests in South America through the port of Paita which is strategically located on the northern coast of Peru in the Piura Region. This makes the facility, which is jointly owned and operated by Terminales Portuarios Euroandinos (TPE) and DP World, serve as a key gateway for Peru and South American trade to international markets. Over the past decade and a half, Paita has become Peru’s most important port for exporting agricultural goods and seafood products, generating more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in the north of the country. It handles about 10 percent of Peru's freight traffic with an annual capacity of 650,000 TEU.

 

“In the North of Peru, TPE stands out as the main port for agro-exports and is the potential gateway for importing products. This characteristic makes it a strategic port on the West Coast of South America. I have no doubt that the signing of this MoU will bring mutual benefits in terms of development as green ports, commercial strategies, as well as safety and security,” said Eduardo Cerdeira, CEO of TPE.

 

Establishing the sister relationship between the two ports came on the same day that China and Peru inaugurated Chancay port, which is located approximately 50 north of Lima and is designed to serve as a major hub for Chinese trade with South America. Chancay which has an initial annual capacity of 1 million TEU is expected to strengthen Peru's maritime infrastructure on the Pacific coast, allowing transshipment of cargo to Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama. It will permit the countries to bypass ports in Mexico and the U.S. as they trade with Asia while China emphasizes it as a key link to build direct trade.

Study Finds Prejudice Against COVID-19 Unvaccinated Around The World

People who have received COVID-19 vaccines express discriminatory attitudes toward unvaccinated people, a new study of over 15,000 citizens of 21 countries across the world suggests.

 

“Individuals who comply with the advice of health authorities morally condemn the unvaccinated for violating a social contract in the midst of a crisis,” two Denmark-based scientists wrote in their paper, published Thursday in Nature.

 

“Those who refuse vaccines report that they feel discriminated and pressured against their will.”

 

To measure COVID-19 vaccination status-based prejudice, researchers asked some 15,233 people how they feel if a close relatives of theirs are going to marry a vaccinated or unvaccinated person—a question that has long been used in surveys on discrimination along racial, ethnic, or partisan lines.

 

Specifically, participants were presented with brief descriptions of a series of fictitious individuals and asked to imagine that these are people whom one of their close relatives intends to marry. They were shown two profiles at a time, side by side, and asked to rate each profile by saying whether they agree or disagree with statements such as, “I would be unhappy if this person married one of my close relatives,” and “I think this person is untrustworthy.”

 

One of the six attributes describing these targeted individuals has been their COVID-19 vaccination status, randomly varying between “fully vaccinated” and “unvaccinated.” The other attributes were age, occupation, hobbies, personality, and “family background,” which distinguished between people “born and raised in [the respondent’s country]” and people who “immigrated from the Middle East.”

The Findings

 

Across six countries—Germany, India, Indonesia, Morocco, South Africa, and the United Kingdom—selected to represent both affluent Western and developing non-Western nations, the unvaccinated were found to be disliked among vaccinated people (14 percentage points) as much as people with drug addiction (15 percentage points), and significantly more so than people who had been in prison (10 percentage points), atheists (7 percentage points), or people with mental illness (6 percentage points).

 

In addition, the overall dislike of the unvaccinated among vaccinated people (13 percentage points) was found to be two and a half times greater than that of Middle Eastern immigrants (5 percentage points). In fact, according to the paper, unvaccinated people face significantly more hostility than immigrants even in 10 countries that are deemed unfriendly to immigrants. Interestingly, discriminatory attitudes against unvaccinated Middle Eastern immigrants were found to be just as strong as those toward unvaccinated natives.

 

By contrast, researchers found that the unvaccinated respondents on average showed almost no discriminatory attitudes toward the vaccinated.

 

“The results demonstrate that prejudice is mostly one-sided,” the authors wrote. “Only in [the] United States and Germany do we find that the unvaccinated feel some antipathy towards the vaccinated. But even here we do not find statistical evidence in favor of negative stereotyping or exclusionary attitudes.”

 

“The observation that vaccinated individuals discriminate against those who are unvaccinated, but that there is no evidence for the reverse, is consistent with work on the psychology of cooperation,” said leading author Alexander Bor, a political psychologist at the George Soros-funded Central European University (CEU).

A Psychological Explanation

 

Such prejudice can be explained by a psychological mechanism against “free-riding,” according to the study. In other words, a highly polarized and moralized sentiment surrounding COVID-19 vaccination activated this mechanism in vaccinated people, causing them to see those who refuse to get the jabs as morally-failed “free riders” of a collective effort.

India Rolls Out Subsidies and Preferential Financing for its Shipyards

India is set to unveil a new policy aimed at incentivizing domestic shipbuilding. The ports, shipping and waterways ministry (MoPSW) is finalizing a cabinet note on incentives to promote domestic shipyards, reported the Indian business newspaper Mint. The proposed incentives are primarily focused on encouraging the development of fuel-efficient and technologically advanced vessels.

 

The new incentive program is the second phase of the existing Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy (SBFAP), which was adopted in 2016 and slated to expire in 2026. In the first phase of SBFAP, 313 vessel orders encompassing both domestic and export orders have been procured by 39 shipyards. So far, 135 vessels have been delivered.

 

During the second phase, the government reportedly wants to allocate $2.1 billion for the program. This will help provide a 25 percent subsidy for specialized vessels, rising to 30 percent for green and highly specialized vessels.

 

Another significant proposal is issuing credit notes worth 40 percent of a ship’s scrap value. After a demolition sale, the credit note could be reimbursed against the cost of constructing a new vessel at an Indian shipyard. Through this proposal, the government is hoping to encourage fleet renewal of Indian vessels. Around 44 percent of India’s merchant shipping fleet is above 20 years of age, data from MoPSW shows.

 

In addition, the government is also considering to introduce a purchase preference policy beginning in fiscal year 2031. This means vessels seeking new registration for coastal cargo transport in India would need to be built at a domestic shipyard.

 

India is targeting the shipbuilding industry as one of the critical pillars in achieving its Atmanirbhar Bharat vision (self-reliant India). The goal is to increase the percentage share of India-built ships in India’s fleet to seven percent by 2030 and 69 percent by 2047. The subsidy programs are key in making Indian yards as competitive as those of China and South Korea.

 

India is also in the process of giving the shipping industry infrastructure status for the first time. Currently, only shipbuilding and shipyards have infrastructure status, but the broader coverage will help reduce project costs for the shipping sector. Infrastructure status means a company can float infrastructure bonds, hence attracting investments from commercial banks and other kinds of concessions.

Elon Musk and Trump Legal Adviser Epshteyn Have Major Blowup at Mar-a-Lago During Dinner – Included Accusations of Leaking Details to the Press

 

The Gateway Pundit has reported several times now on Trump Transition Team insiders leaking information to the press – particularly on Attorney General nominee Matt Gaetz and Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth.

 

Hegseth has been the victim of several bogus and presumptive claims to derail his nomination.

 

On Thursday, Vanity Fair published a hit piece on Pete and an alleged affair he had with a woman back in 2017 in Monterey, California.

 

The information allegedly came from a Transition team insider.

 

Another leak was published by MSNBC and The Washington Post on Sunday. According to NBC News, Hegseth paid a women hush money after she accused him of sexual assault.

 

This was leaked to the media over the weekend.

 

These leaks by a Transition Team member were meant to take down Hegseth and make President Trump look foolish.

 

On Monday The Daily Mail and Axios reported on a blowup at Mar-a-Lago between Elon Musk and Boris Epshteyn last week.

 

According to reports, Elon Musk accused Boris of leaking information to the press.

Lebanon, Hezbollah Agree To US-Proposed Ceasefire With Israel After Especially Bloody 24 Hours

 

It appears Netanyahu's reported "gift" of a Lebanon ceasefire in the wake of Trump's election victory is coming to fruition. Reuters and other international outlets are reporting that agreement on a US-proposed ceasefire has been reached.

 

"Lebanon and Hezbollah have agreed to a U.S. proposal for a ceasefire with Israel with some comments on the content, a top Lebanese official told Reuters on Monday, describing the effort as the most serious yet to end to the fighting."

 

A Lebanese source, Ali Hassan Khalil, an aide to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, has said "Lebanon had delivered its written response to the U.S. ambassador in Lebanon on Monday, and White House envoy Amos Hochstein was travelling to Beirut to continue talks," Reuters writes late in the day Monday.

 

Israel has yet to issue official comment, and much remains to be seen on whether it will actually take effect or hold:

 

"Lebanon presented its comments on the paper in a positive atmosphere," Khalil said, declining to give further details. "All the comments that we presented affirm the precise adherence to (U.N.) Resolution 1701 with all its provisions," he said.

 

It comes as a bit of a surprise, given how violent the past 24 hours have been on both sides of the border.

 

At least five Lebanese were killed Monday due to an Israeli strike on the Zuqaq al-Blat area, with casualty figures expected to increase amid an emergency response. Over 30 were injured in the attack, others remain missing.

 

On the Israeli side of the war-ravaged border area, Israeli sources are saying a number of Hezbollah missiles scored direct hits on civilian areas:

 

A woman was killed and at least 17 people were wounded in several rocket barrages fired by Hezbollah on Monday, as the terror group launched more than 100 rockets at northern Israel and one missile at the country’s center throughout the day.

 

The woman, identified as Safaa Awad, 41, was killed and dozens of others wounded in the evening by a rocket that hit a three-story building in the northern town of Shfar’am after Hezbollah fired five projectiles at the Galilee.

 

Among the wounded victims were a woman aged 41 and a 4-year-old boy in serious condition, Rambam Hospital in Haifa said.

 

The medical center said a total of 56 victims were brought for treatment, mostly for acute anxiety. Among the victims were 18 children, the hospital adds.

Mitch McConnell’s Freighted Ties to a Shadowy Shipping Company

After drugs were found aboard the Ping May, a vessel owned by his wife’s family’s company, Colombian authorities are investigating.

Before the Ping May, a rusty cargo vessel, could disembark from the port of Santa Marta en route to the Netherlands in late August, Colombian inspectors boarded the boat and made a discovery. Hidden in the ship’s chain locker, amidst its load of coal bound for Europe, were approximately 40 kilograms, or about ninety pounds, of cocaine. A Colombian Coast Guard official told The Nation that there is an ongoing investigation.

 

The seizure of the narcotics shipment in the Caribbean port occurred far away from Kentucky, the state in which Senator Mitch McConnell is now facing a career-defining election. But the Republican Senate minority leader has the closest of ties to the owner of the Ping May, the vessel containing the illicit materials: the Foremost Maritime Corporation, a firm founded and owned by McConnell’s in-laws, the Chao family.

 

Though Foremost has played a pivotal role in McConnell’s life, bestowing the senator with most of his personal wealth and generating thousands in donations to his campaign committees, the drug bust went unnoticed in Kentucky, where every bit of McConnell-related news has generated fodder for the campaign trail. That’s because, like many international shipping companies, Chao’s firm is shrouded from public view, concealing its identity and limiting its legal liability through an array of tax shelters and foreign registrations. Registered through a limited liability company in the Marshall Islands, the Ping May flies the Liberian flag.

 

McConnell’s ties to the Chaos go back to the late 1980s, when James Chao began donating to the senator. In 1993, McConnell married James’s daughter, Elaine Chao, a Republican activist and former Reagan administration official who would later serve as secretary of labor in the George W. Bush cabinet. James Chao emigrated to the United States from Taiwan, and founded the Foremost Maritime Corporation upon settling in New York. The company has grown significantly over the years, from acting as maritime agent during the Vietnam War to controlling a fleet of approximately sixteen dry-bulk cargo ships in operation today.

 

Foremost acts as a shipping agent, purchasing vessels made primarily in China and coordinating shipment of commodities. Records reviewed by The Nation reveal that Foremost transports corn, chemicals and other goods to cities throughout the world. The company has offices in New York and Hong Kong.

G20 finance leaders meeting in Brazil are preparing a joint statement for Thursday in support of progressive taxation that will stop short of endorsing the hosts' proposal for a global "billionaire tax," two G20 officials told Reuters.

Brazil's presidency of the Group of 20 major economies this year has drummed up initial support from some countries for a joint effort to tax ultra-high-net-worth individuals, although debate has been preliminary.

France, Spain, Colombia, Belgium and the African Union have backed the idea, along with South Africa, which will assume the G20 presidency next year. However, the idea has hit high-profile resistance, including from U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

Sources at the German finance ministry, which came out against the idea in April, said that a tax on the super-rich was off the table at this week's G20 meetings. Tax discussions would focus on other ideas, such as combating tax avoidance and wealth concealment, the sources said.
