According to US Government Data, Iran is Not the Major Sponsor of Terrorism

 

When it comes to using terrorism as a political club, the United States government is the grand master, and a deceptive one at that. The establishment media, lubricated with funds from the CIA and USAID, continue to push the lie that Iran is a massive sponsor of terrorism.

 

The U.S. government considers Iran to be the foremost state sponsor of terrorism, spending more than one billion dollars on terrorist financing annually, and there are between 140,000 and 185,000 IRGC-Quds Force partner forces in Afghanistan, Gaza, Lebanon, Pakistan, Syria, and Yemen.

 

But, according to the data presented in the statistical annex of the US Department of State’s annual report, Country Reports on Terrorism, the major perpetrators of terrorism are Sunni groups, not Iran nor groups allegedly sponsored by Iran. The Sunni groups receive financial support from the Gulf Arabs and, ironically, from the United States.

 

The definition of terrorism, according to Bibi Netanyahu (and I agree with him), is violence against civilians for political purposes. Simple and direct.

 

I have copied the tables from the Annex of Statistical Information for the years 2016 — 2023. The data in these tables tell the story. ISIS has been the most active and prolific terrorist group for the eight years presented in the spreadsheets pictured below. One group that is a subsidiary of ISIS — Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham — has placed in the top ten of the groups with most attacks for five of the last six years. And guess who the CIA helped come to power in Syria? That would be Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.

 

It is noteworthy that we have learned this week, thanks to Elon Musk, that USAID funneled funds to Al Nusra. For those of you not familiar with Al Nusra, it came into existence out of ISIS and one of its leaders was Muhammad Al Jawlani, who later created Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, and is now the de facto leader of Syria. The US had a $10 million dollar bounty on his head until Joe Biden’s State Department made it go away.

 

It is only in 2023 that three groups with ties to Iran appear in the Top Ten list — the Houthis (Ansar Allah), Hamas and Hezbollah . The US decision to place the Houthis, Hamas and Hezbollah on this list is because of their attacks on Israel, which have been directed primarily at military targets, not civilian ones. Prior to 2023, neither Hamas nor Hezbollah was identified as groups with the most attacks worldwide. Guess who killed more civilians than Hamas and Hezbollah combined in 2023? That would be Israel, but the US refuses to identify Israeli attacks on unarmed civilians as terrorism or genocide.

 

Elon Musk’s revelations that USAID has provided millions of US taxpayer dollars to groups the US labels as terrorists exposes the galling hypocrisy of US policy for combating terrorism. An honest assessment of the data makes it clear that the United States has been a facilitator of terrorism. Keep that in mind the next time you hear someone from the Trump administration insist that we must crush Iran because it sponsors terrorism. A nation that lives in a glass house should not throw rocks.

Six Killed In Fresh Israel Strikes On Lebanon

 

On February 8, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it had launched a strike in eastern Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley, targeting fighters of Hezbollah at a weapons manufacturing site.

 

“The strike was carried out after the terrorists were identified operating at a site for manufacturing and storing strategic weapons,” the IDF said in a statement, noting that any activity at the Hezbollah site was a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

 

“The IDF continues to operate to remove any threat to the State of Israel and will prevent any attempt by the Hezbollah terrorist organization to rebuild its forces, in accordance with the ceasefire understandings,” the military added.

 

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that six were killed and two others were killed in the Israeli strike, without elaborating.

 

The ceasefire agreement, which was brokered by the United States, entered into effect on November 27. Under the agreement, both the IDF and Hezbollah were supposed to withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 26. However, the agreement was extended until February 18 after Israel refused to pull out its troops citing the slow deployment of the Lebanese military in the region. The deployment is a key part of the agreement.

 

It’s worth noting that the Beqaa Valley is located to the north of the Litani River, beyond the line which Hezbollah is required to withdraw under the agreement.

 

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah broke out as a direct result of the war in the Gaza Strip, which began with the October 7 Hamas-led surprise attack of 2023. More than 4,000 people were killed in Lebanon with over 130 others on the Israeli side.

 

The IDF escalated strikes against Hezbollah in recent weeks, citing violations of the ceasefire agreement with no real response from Hezbollah.

 

The group, which took heavy losses during the conflict, will not likely retaliate. However, it could resume attacks if Israel refused to withdraw from southern Lebanon by the agreed upon dead line.

Israel Resumes Strikes On Syria

 

Israel resumed strikes on Syria on February 8, hitting key sites of the now dissolved Syrian Arab Army and causing casualties.

 

The first wave of strikes hit the outskirts of the town of Deir Ali, more than 20 kilometers to the south of the capital, Damascus. According to Daraa 24, a news blog based in southern Syria, the strikes targeted a small weapons depot and a vehicle.

 

Another wave of strikes hit weapons depots at the abandoned 15th Brigade base close to the town of Inkhel in the northern Daraa countryside later in the day, according to Daraa 24, which didn’t report any casualties. There was no comment from the IDF.

 

Furthermore, Lebanon’s Al-Mayadeen TV reported blasts near the town of al-Draij, some nine kilometers to the northwest of Damascus, as well as in the outskirts of the coastal city of Tartus. A large military training base is located in al-Daraij and multiple air defense sites are situated close to Tartus. However, it is still unclear if the blasts were caused by Israeli strikes.

 

It’s worth noting that in addition to these strikes, a force of the IDF advanced from the buffer zone adjacent to the occupied Golan Heights in the direction of the town of Khirbat Saysun in the western countryside of Daraa. The force didn’t face any resistance.

 

Following the fall of the Assad regime last December, Israel occupied the buffer zone in the countryside of al-Qunitra. It also launched hundreds of strikes against military sites and equipment across Syria, destroying much of the country’s military capabilities.

 

The Syrian transitional government condemned Israel’s actions. However, it has not responded yet, likely due to the fraile situation of the country. The latest strikes indicate that Israel is planning to take advantage of this. After using Lebanon’s Hezbollah as an excuse to attack the former regime for more than decade, Israel will apparently use Hamas for now on.

Police investigating allegations Evelyn de Rothschild committed multiple sexual assaults against two women were told they could not interview the financier for "medical reasons," according to a statement.

He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. You know, the whole argument of cannabis I think is argued against by people that never have indulged or have an agenda for big industries of some sort, but I'm willing to bet they enjoy a drink or two on their time off, and have little problem with others imbibing the sauce as well, so I'll use alcohol as a parallel example.

 

When I hear the argument in the media, "Pot is too strong now. It's causing psychosis. It's a gateway drug. I just want to smoke a joint and have a light buzz instead of being zombified." then I hear "All I can find is moonshine. It's hard on the liver. I just want to drink the same volume of moonshine as the volume of beer I used to when younger but it fucks me up too much." That's not a problem where its legally controlled, you can buy beer, hard spirits, moonshine, even non-alcoholic white claws if you want, and I've never met anyone that came down with psychosis because of it, ever.

 

And, pot is as much a gateway to harder drugs as masturbation is a gateway to rape. I'd argue alcohol is more of a gateway to harder drugs because it lowers inhibitions and clouds judgement. Pot on the other hand, for me anyway, increases inhibitions and focus slightly, but others' mileage or road for that may vary.

 

It's an intoxicant though. Mostly controlled through illicit means but there are legal spots, but there is no argument that it is not a cash cow for crime. It should be left up to each state to decide for themselves how they want to handle it is what I think, but I'd ask them to give it the same consideration as they do to alcohol when they make their decisions.

In the three months between November and January, three incidents of damage to Baltic Sea underwater cables have taken place, severing at least partly seven different telecommunication links that connect Baltic states like Sweden, Finland, Germany, Estonia and Latvia.

 

All in all, Statista's Katharina Buchholz has counted damage to 10 different Baltic underwater cables and three gas pipes, starting with the highly publicized rupture of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines back in 2022.

 

A report by The Washington Post citing anonymous officials said on January 19 that intelligence and other evidence pointed to negligence rather than malice in the case of the three incidents that took place in 2023 and 2024. Suspected in these are two Chinese-registered ships - both reportedly with Russian links - and one vessel believed to be part of Russia's so-called shadow fleet dodging sanctions by transporting oil. Since then, however, an additional incident - the third in just three months - took place, stoking suspicion of sabotage once more. Another Russian-crewed cargo liner was detained and searched by Norwegian authorities on January 31 near Tromso at the request of Latvia after the incident that took place five days earlier, but was cleared later. Sweden meanwhile detained another ship, the Bulgarian-operated Vezhen, and determined it had damaged the cable, if accidentally.

 

Doubts about the events being a coincidence are persistent, however, mostly due to the 2022 Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 incidents that have at this point almost certainly been deemed sabotage. The damage done on September 26, 2022, was as dramatic as it was symbolic when detonations ruptured the two gas pipelines connecting Russia and Germany seven months after the Russian invasion - amid Europe finding it near impossible to wean itself off Russian fossil fuel. However, Russia has not been zeroed in as the only likely perpetrator in the case, with some theories now also pointing to Ukraine.

 

Considering this background, it’s not a surprise that Norway's search of the Silver Dania wasn’t the only one in the context of ruptured Baltic undersea cables.

 

Denmark intercepted and boarded the Chinese Yi Peng 3, suspected to have caused cable damage in November, while Finland seized the Russian Eagle S that it identified as having caused cable and pipeline damage this past Christmas Day. It did not help suspicion that the last remaining ship implied in the damages, the Chinese Newnew Polar Bear, carried on into Russian waters after the incident that took place in 2023 and was escorted by a Russian state-owned ice breaker.

 

The way in which commercial vessels have been damaging pipelines and cables is different from the initial Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 ruptures, where traces of explosives were found. The ships have been slicing the cables and pipes by dragging their anchors - often for extended periods of time. While this has led some experts to believe that the vessels in question are poorly maintained and have poorly trained crews, others have said that they find it unlikely that the crews would not notice such an issue. While damage by anchors is not as extensive as by explosives, it is still costly and can disrupt communications, electricity and gas supply for the countries in question significantly until repairs can be carried out.

 

With uncertainty about accident or attack persisting in Europe, other cable cutting incidents have likewise raised suspicion, for example in Taiwan earlier this month. A governing body estimates that around 150 to 200 cable damage incidents happen per year around the world mostly from anchoring and fishing - which equates to around three cable repairs per week. While this makes the recent cluster of Baltic Sea cable incidents not impossible but still unlikely to occur, suspicion will continue amid ongoing tensions of Europe and other Western powers with China and Russia as well as the history of almost definite sabotage incidents in Baltic waters.

Egypt announced Sunday that it will host an emergency Arab summit on Feb. 27 to discuss “new and dangerous developments” after U.S. President Donald Trump proposed to resettle Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

 

Trump’s suggestion, made at a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week, infuriated the Arab world, including Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia — key allies of Washington.

 

Both Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and Jordanian King Abdullah II dismissed Trump’s call to resettle 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza and for the U.S. to take ownership of the enclave, but Trump claims that they would eventually accept it.

 

A statement from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said it would host the Arab League summit in Cairo following talks at the highest level in Arab countries in recent days, “including the state of Palestine that asked to hold the summit in order to discuss new and dangerous developments for the Palestinian cause.”

Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE’s) Elon Musk announced Monday during an X discussion space that he and President Donald Trump had agreed to upend USAID, pushing the remainder of the agency under the leadership of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Since the announcement, reports have surfaced of billions in taxpayer dollars being wasted on international programs by the government agency, some of which had a high risk of landing in the Taliban’s hands and also aiding an organization linked to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

 

“That said, there is tremendous waste within the aid industrial complex. This is well known. It’s been well documented,” Cohen added. “It’s probably not unique to USAID. It’s probably true across the federal government, in which most contractors charge overhead that is beyond what any reasonable business would consider appropriate. Therefore, the American taxpayer does not get the return on investment that we expect.”

Pausing assistance to crime-battered countries like Haiti, Colombia and Ecuador may worsen issues the Trump administration is focused on, regional officials say

For his second term in office, President Trump has pledged to crack down on migration and go after violent drug cartels, putting a renewed focus south of the border where he had also threatened to take back the Panama Canal and prepared to impose tariffs of up to 25% on imports from Mexico.

Yet security officials say some moves—chiefly the administration’s decision to freeze aid that helps Latin American governments take on criminal groups—could undermine the White House’s plans in the region. And, in the worst-case scenario, the could enable the gangs to expand their territory, traffic more cocaine and fentanyl, and prompt more people to migrate, possibly to the U.S.

In Haiti, the United Nations said Tuesday the Trump administration put a hold on $13 million to help a multinational security-support mission to fight gangs that killed more than 5,000 last year and have uprooted more than one million people. Security experts say the gangs could easily expand into powerful regional crime organizations.

“That would be detrimental for U.S. interests,” said Vanda Felbab-Brown, a Brookings Institution scholar on organized crime.

In Colombia, 18 Black Hawk helicopters used for antinarcotics operations were grounded for lack of U.S.-funded fuel and maintenance amid a recent surge in drug violence. And in Honduras, prosecutors tracking the notorious MS-13 gang were told that U.S. training on new software to help track illicit money and fight drug trafficking had been suspended.

“This is going to impact investigations, it is going to have consequences,” said Luis Santos, Honduras’s top anticorruption prosecutor who survived an assassination attempt in 2008.
