WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's administration began a mass firing of federal workers on Thursday.

Office of Personnel Management officials met with agency leaders and advised them to dismiss probationary employees, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Hundreds of thousands of people could potentially be affected, according to data from the Office of Personnel Management, although the exact number of people who will be terminated was not immediately clear.

Employees who have probationary status have typically been with the federal government for only one or two years — before all their civil service protections have kicked in.

"The probationary period is a continuation of the job application process, not an entitlement for permanent employment," an OPM spokesperson said in a statement. "Agencies are taking independent action in light of the recent hiring freeze and in support of the President’s broader efforts to restructure and streamline the federal government to better serve the American people at the highest possible standard."

Federal Judge Extends Pause on Trump’s Move to Put Thousands of USAID Workers on Leave

A federal judge on Thursday temporarily extended his restraining order blocking the Trump Admin from placing USAID workers on leave.

Last week Judge Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee said he will halt a midnight deadline for USAID to be reduced to couple hundred workers.

President Trump planned to drastically reduce the USAID workforce to a few hundred workers.

Thousand of workers were to be placed on administrative leave.

On Thursday Judge Nichols extended his restraining order until February 21.

Politico reported:

A federal judge is giving thousands of employees in the U.S. Agency for International Development another weeklong reprieve from being forced onto administrative leave or called home from overseas posts, but signaled that he may not order longer-term relief.

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols extended until Feb. 21 an order he issued last week that blocked much of the Trump administration’s plan for massive changes to USAID. It further disrupts the Trump administration’s effort to dismantle a federal bureaucracy — in this case, one that handles billions of dollars in foreign aid — at lightning speed.

However, during a court hearing Thursday, Nichols repeatedly expressed skepticism about the court’s continued role in overseeing actions toward USAID employees in the U.S. The judge said there were other ways for the agency to address potential employment actions. He said the courts often address that sort of harm through financial damage awards rather than by trying to dictate specific agency actions.

“That harm gets addressed later,” said Nichols, a Trump appointee.

Nichols outlined two areas where he saw potential for the “imminent harm” that might prompt him to intervene: USAID employees in high-risk areas overseas and those abroad who might have significant expenses that the agency typically covers, such as utilities, rent or education expenses.

Actress Issa Rae has canceled a sold-out show at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, citing "an infringement of values" at the venue after President Trump fired board members and installed himself as chairman this week.

Rae, the creator and star of HBO's "Insecure," announced on Instagram that she would no longer host her "An Evening with Issa Rae" event that was scheduled at the Washington, D.C., venue for March 16.

"Unfortunately, due to what I believe to be an infringement on the values of an institution that has faithfully celebrated artists of all backgrounds through all mediums, I've decided to cancel my appearance at this venue," the actress said in the post.

She added that refunds would be issued for those who bought tickets.

On Wednesday, the newly constituted Kennedy Center Board voted unanimously to elect Mr. Trump to be the new chair of the venue, where the president has a goal of moving away from programming and performances that constitute what he views as "woke culture," multiple sources told CBS News.

Rae isn't the only performer who has dissociated herself from the performing arts center since Mr. Trump's takeover. Shonda Rhimes, creator of the television shows "Scandal" and "Grey's Anatomy," resigned from her post as treasurer. Singer-songwriter Ben Folds also stepped down as artistic adviser to the National Symphony Orchestra.

"Given developments at the Kennedy Center, effective today I am resigning as artistic advisor to the NSO," he wrote in an Instagram post Wednesday. "Not for me."

Soros-Backed DA in the Hot Seat After Man on Bond Goes on Cop Shooting Spree

(DCNF)—A Texas district attorney is under the congressional spotlight after an individual with a lengthy rap sheet went on a shooting spree against San Antonio law enforcement while out on bail.

Brandon Poulos — a man who had just been arrested several days prior for allegedly pushing an 81-year-old woman to the ground, socking an 83-year-old man in the face and then crashing his vehicle while intoxicated — allegedly fired at seven different San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) officers while barricaded in an apartment complex during an hours-long standoff. Texas GOP Rep. Chip Roy is now asking Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales, who has been supported by liberal billionaire George Soros, to explain why the man was released in the first place.

“I write today with serious concerns regarding the recent incident in which an individual – with a lengthy criminal history who was released on bail – fired upon law enforcement, injuring seven San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) officers,” Roy wrote to Gonzales in a Thursday letter exclusively obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“This incident appears to be another example where lax criminal justice policies, including bail reform, have threatened the safety of Bexar County residents and our law enforcement officers,” Roy continued.

SAPD officers responded to a suicide-in-progress call on Jan. 22 at the Sonterra Heights complex. When officers arrived, Poulos remained barricaded inside an apartment for over six hours. The 46-year-old opened fire at the responding officers, shooting one in the leg and injuring six others.

Poulos was ultimately killed by San Antonio Police Department’s SWAT team. Law enforcement believes he purposively called 911 to ambush responding police officers.

“This incident raises serious questions as to why someone with a history of violence was released on bail,” Roy wrote to Gonzales.

Poulos was arrested for the alleged elderly attacks and intoxicated driving on Jan. 18 and released on a $35,000 bond the following day, according to a local report. His release was just three days before the apartment shooting spree. Additionally, he allegedly broke a “no contact” order given to him almost immediately after the elderly assault case.

Gonzales, a Democrat, entered office as the Bexar County District Attorney in January 2019 and was re-elected in 2022. Gonzales has been heavily backed by the nation’s most well-known bankroller of left-wing prosecutors, according to data compiled by the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund (LELDF).

Gonzales has received more than $2 million in Soros-connected donations through the Fair and Just Prosecution, Texas Organizing Project and the Texas Justice & Public Safety PAC, according to LELDF. The donations make Gonzales one of many left-wing district attorneys across the United States who have enjoyed financial backing by Soros, who has openly admitted to wanting more prosecutors who are softer on criminals.

Roy is demanding Gonzales answer what steps his office is taking to ensure violent criminals are not committing crimes due to lenient bond policies and what current policies are in place allowing prosecutors to object to low bond amounts.

The Republican lawmaker is also asking Gonzales to explain why his office did not seek to confine Poulos and other violent offenders like him.

The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the DCNF.

US President Donald Trump has said Russia should be reinstated in the club of economic powerhouses from which it was suspended in 2014.

The region broke away from Ukraine and joined Russia via a referendum in the aftermath of the Western-backed Maidan coup in Kiev.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Russia’s exclusion from the group and floated the idea of reinstating it during his first term. At the time, the proposal was rejected by the other members of the club, while Moscow itself appeared to show no interest in returning.

US govt paid Reuters millions for ‘social deception’ – Musk

A subsidiary of Reuters has received millions in US government funding for “large scale social deception” projects, Elon Musk, the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has claimed.

In a post on Thursday, Musk weighed in on data from the website USAspending.gov stating that Thomson Reuters Special Services LLC, a subsidiary of Thomson Reuters, had contracts with government agencies.

One of the publicly available documents stipulated that the US Department of Defense had committed more than $9 million on two projects called Active Social Engineering Defense (ASED) and Large Scale Social Deception (LSD).

Commenting on the document, Musk wrote: “Reuters was paid millions of dollars by the US government for ‘large scale social deception’. That is literally what it says on the purchase order! They’re a total scam. Just wow.”

According to the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the ASEAD program aims to develop automated defenses against social engineering attacks, which could involve deceptive tactics to manipulate individuals into divulging confidential information. Neither the Pentagon nor USAspending.gov elaborates on the purpose of the program, but both LSD and ASEAD are listed as activities within the realm of engineering and research and development.

Reuters was awarded another Pentagon contract that provides the Department of Defense with unidentified advanced development services. The agency has also received around $500,000 from the State Department for access to news services.

Both Musk and US President Donald Trump have vowed to fight corruption and wasteful spending in the US government. In light of this, several federal agencies have terminated contracts totaling $8 million with Politico magazine following Musk’s criticism of these agreements as a “wasteful” use of taxpayer funds.

Trump has also suggested that billions of dollars have been misappropriated within agencies such as the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Washington’s primary agency for funding political projects abroad, to pay for favorable media coverage of Democrats. The claim was rejected by several US media outlets, including Politico and the Associated Press.
