The News

The new resistance to Donald Trump’s presidency had== a plan: State attorneys general from Maine to Hawaii would rush to court to stop vast portions of the agenda Trump had spent years promising to deliver.

And it’s working: Democratic attorneys general and the Democracy Forward coalition of liberal lawyers have been winning== in court and throwing up hurdles to his agenda. Skeptical judges have kept federal workers in their jobs, unfrozen billions of dollars in grants, and preserved birthright citizenship; Democracy’s own network of partner organizations has grown from around 180 after the election to more than 400 now.

“The Trump administration spent years preparing for the blitz of executive orders we’re seeing now — but the legal strategy is working,” said Democracy Forward President Skye Perryman. “The early wins we’ve seen so far are just the beginning of our coordinated legal strategy.” Congressional Democrats agreed with her.

“We’ve had a great deal of success with preliminary injunctions, temporary restraining orders in the courts,” Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer told Semafor on Wednesday. “I think there are close to 50 suits filed, and on almost every major issue, the courts have put a freeze on stopping the DOGE people from implementing what they want to implement.”

“Democratic attorneys general are currently batting a thousand at getting injunctions, which is great,” said Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin, who cautioned that the final outcome “remains to be seen.”

On the other hand: There are no mass protests on the Mall, few stirring speeches, and many, many angry social media posts. Around the country and on Capitol Hill, Democrats sure don’t feel like they’re winning.

Rallying against Trump’s executive orders, Congressional Democrats have been heckled by protesters who ask what they’re actually doing. New polling from YouGov this week found that two-thirds of Democratic voters want them to “oppose Trump as much as possible.”

“We’re going to fight on your behalf in the Congress, we’re fighting on your behalf in the courts and we’re going to make sure we do what we need to do in the community,” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said at a Tuesday rally organized by the American Federation of Government Employees. It’s the first part — a congressional battle that isn’t slowing Trump down — that’s been frustrating progressives.

“That’s the sales pitch?” scoffed “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart on Monday, after playing New York Rep. Dan Goldman’s take that House Democrats couldn’t stop Trump without Republican defections. “You can see the Democrats’ backbone on our new show, ‘America Backslides,’ starring Dan Goldman as Hopeful Loser!”

One particularly demoralizing storyline for Democrats — not that they have many helpful ones to choose from — is that they are so overwhelmed by the speed of the Trump administration that they don’t know how to fight it.

That’s not really true. There was a playbook in place for a Trump restoration, built during the 2024 campaign, when the party messaged relentlessly against the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 agenda and tried to make its authors famous. (Quick: Name a former OMB director who’s not Russ Vought.)Democratic legal groups and attorneys general previewed their plans in The New York Times one week after Kamala Harris’ defeat.

Then they executed the plan. There’s a debate happening among liberal lawyers about which cases are the strongest, and which ones risk an adverse precedent if they get to the Supreme Court — a 6-3 supermajority less friendly to them at any time in the first Trump term. But the goal was stopping as much of the agenda as possible, and some of that has worked.

But the faces of this are dispersed and often obscure state attorneys general (Tish James in New York, Rob Bonta in California, Andrea Campbell in Massachusetts) who don’t have their own press corps or big social media personae. The media apparatus that covers Congress has watched Democrats lose, then gotten them to explain why they lost, repeatedly. On social media, there’s been particular progressive angst about Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly, who beat New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for the chief House Oversight role, and whose biggest early move — subpoenaing

On the Hill, Democrats have heard the complaints about why they’re not doing more. But some say that their voters are listening.

“It’s a whole-of-movement approach,” said Florida Rep. Max Frost, the youngest House Democrat and an organizer for some of the protests outside of endangered agencies.“I’ve heard from a lot of my constituents that they’re feeling better and better about how Democrats are responding.”

Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley praised her state’s attorney general, Campbell, for joining legal actions against the administration. But she acknowledged that the action wasn’t immediate.

“The problem is, it moves slower,” she said. “That’s hard for people to digest, because the threats are so urgent that you want to see a response to counter it that’s just as urgent.”

The Trump administration has described its losses in court as illegitimate judicial hackery, while abiding by most of them.

“The real constitutional crisis is taking place within our judicial branch, where district court judges in liberal districts across the country are abusing their power to unilaterally block President Trump’s basic executive authority,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Wednesday, though some of the judges ruling against the administration were appointed by Republicans. “We believe these judges are acting as judicial activists, rather than honest arbiters of the law.”

Democracy Forward, a liberal-leaning legal organization that frequently battled the first Trump administration in court, on Thursday unveiled a large-scale new effort aimed at thwarting President-elect Donald J. Trump’s second-term agenda from his first day in office.

More than 800 lawyers at 280 organizations have begun developing cases and workshopping specific challenges to what the group has identified as 600 “priority legal threats” — potential regulations, laws and other administrative actions that could require a legal response, its leaders said. The project, called Democracy 2025, aims to be a hub of opposition to the new Trump administration.

Unlike in 2017, when Democratic lawyers were unprepared for the onslaught of conservative policies, the intent is to be ready to unleash a flurry of lawsuits immediately.

“We’re leveling up and lawyering up,” Skye Perryman, the chief executive of the organization, said. “This wasn’t something that just everybody woke up the day after the election and started to plan.”

Democracy Forward has spent the last two years working to identify the possible actions the new Trump administration could take on issues they see as key priorities to defend, the group’s leaders said, using as a blueprint Mr. Trump’s first-term actions, his campaign promises and plans released by his allies, including the Heritage Foundation and its Project 2025 agenda.

Those issues include abortion rights, health care, climate, union protections, environmental protections and immigration. But the group has also given particular weight to Mr. Trump’s promises to weaponize the systems of government, particularly the Justice Department, against those he sees as foes along with his vows to dismantle federal agencies and fire thousands of government workers.

The flotilla of lawyers is preparing to challenge new regulations released by the Trump administration, even beginning the process of recruiting potential plaintiffs who would have legal standing in court. But they’re also exploring ways to take over the defense of Biden administration policies mired in litigation, such as student debt relief and women’s health protections, that are currently being defended by the Justice Department. A new Trump administration would be unlikely to continue that defense.

How the effort fits into a broader constellation of Democratic Party leaders, advocacy groups and others developing plans to push back against the Trump administration remains unclear.

Democracy Forward has deep ties to a number of prominent party strategists and lists Marc Elias, the powerful election lawyer, and Ron Klain, President Biden’s former White House chief of staff, as members of its board.

The group spent much of the first Trump administration challenging policies like Republican attempts to roll back the health care law and impose new restrictions on immigration. During the Biden administration, it provided legal support for Democratic efforts to protect emergency abortion care, uphold the ability of Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug pricing and regulate e-cigarettes.

The coalition has built a multimillion-dollar war chest for its new focus. Its partners include a broad swath of organizations, including unions, immigration advocacy organizations and groups working on abortion rights, civil rights and consumer protection. The group’s legal efforts will be paired with a website designed to showcase its work for the public and to encourage more lawyers, experts and civilians to join its cases.

“This is still a huge uphill battle and it’s going to take everybody doing their part,” Ms. Perryman said. “It’s not just lawyers. It’s going to take institutions willing to stand up against extremism.”

Western mainstream political parties blaming Russian meddling for electoral failures are increasingly out of touch with voters, US Vice President J.D. Vance has said. EU politicians would rather suppress dissent than reflect on their actions, he told the Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

 

Ahead of attending the Munich Security Conference on Friday, Vance urged Western politicians to embrace the rise of anti-establishment politics. He criticized attempts to dismiss viewpoints on issues such as traditional values and immigration by those who attribute them to “misinformation.”

A recent instance occurred in Romania in December, where the Constitutional Court annulled the first round of voting in the country’s presidential election after right-wing anti-establishment candidate Calin Georgescu unexpectedly led the race. Media reports revealed that the alleged Russian interference cited by the court actually stemmed from a consulting firm associated with the ruling National Liberal Party.

 

Allegations of Russian efforts to undermine Romanian democracy were promoted by Context, an NGO funded by the US through the National Endowment for Democracy — an organization that according to its co-founder Allen Weinstein is mostly doing in the open what the CIA previously did covertly. The narrative suggesting Moscow bolstered Georgescu was supported by the US Embassy in Romania and senior American officials.

 

Vance argued that mainstream parties in the EU are “kind of terrified of their own people.” He pointed to the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which despite electoral success struggles to find coalition partners due to being labeled extremist by centrist factions.

NASA Tests Drones to Provide Micrometeorology, Aid in Fire Response

In Aug. 2024, a team of NASA researchers and partners gathered in Missoula, to test new drone-based technology for localized forecasting, or micrometeorology.

Researchers attached wind sensors to a drone, NASA’s Alta X quadcopter, aiming to provide precise and sustainable meteorological data to help predict fire behavior.

 

Wildfires are increasing in number and severity around the world, including the United States, and wind is a major factor.

It leads to unexpected and unpredictable fire growth, public threats, and fire fatalities, making micrometeorology a very effective tool to combat fire.

The campaign was run by NASA’s FireSense project, focused on addressing challenges in wildland fire management by putting NASA science and technology in the hands of operational agencies.

 

“Ensuring that the new technology will be easily adoptable by operational agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and the National Weather Service was another primary goal of the campaign,” said Jacquelyn Shuman, FireSense project scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley.

The FireSense team chose the Alta X drone because the U.S. Forest Service already has a fleet of the quadcopters and trained drone pilots, which could make integrating the needed sensors – and the accompanying infrastructure – much easier and more cost-effective for the agency.

The choice of the two sensors for the drone’s payload was also driven by their adoptability.

 

The first, called a radiosonde, measures wind direction and speed, humidity, temperature, and pressure, and is used daily by the National Weather Service.

The other sensor, an anemometer, measures wind speed and direction, and is used at weather stations and airports around the world.

 

“Anemometers are everywhere, but are usually stationary,” said Robert McSwain, the FireSense uncrewed aerial system (UAS) lead, based at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.

“We are taking a sensor type that is already used all over the world, and giving it wings.”

Both sensors create datasets that are already familiar to meteorologists worldwide, which opens up the potential applications of the platform.

 

Current Forecasting Methods: Weather Balloons

Traditionally, global weather forecasting data is gathered by attaching a radiosonde to a weather balloon and releasing it into the air.

This system works well for regional weather forecasts. But the rapidly changing environment of wildland fire requires more recurrent, pinpointed forecasts to accurately predict fire behavior. It’s the perfect niche for a drone.

 

“These drones are not meant to replace the weather balloons,” said Jennifer Fowler, FireSense’s project manager at Langley.

“The goal is to create a drop-in solution to get more frequent, localized data for wildfires – not to replace all weather forecasting.”

Provide Control, Repeat Testing, Sustainability

Drones can be piloted to keep making measurements over a precise location – an on-site forecaster could fly one every couple of hours as conditions change – and gather timely data to help determine how weather will impact the direction and speed of a fire.

Fire crews on the ground may need this information to make quick decisions about where to deploy firefighters and resources, draw fire lines, and protect nearby communities.

 

A reusable platform, like a drone, also reduces the financial and environmental impact of forecasting flights.

“A weather balloon is going to be a one-off, and the attached sensor won’t be recovered,” Fowler said. “The instrumented drone, on the other hand, can be flown repeatedly.”

 

The Missoula Campaign

Before such technology can be sent out to a fire, it needs to be tested. That’s what the FireSense team did this summer.

McSwain described the conditions in Missoula as an “alignment of stars” for the research: the complex mountain terrain produces erratic, historically unpredictable winds, and the sparsity of monitoring instruments on the ground makes weather forecasting very difficult.

During the three-day campaign, several fires burned nearby, which allowed researchers to test how the drones performed in smokey conditions.

 

A drone team out of NASA Langley conducted eight data-collection flights in Missoula. Before each drone flight, student teams from the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, and Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, Montana, launched a weather balloon carrying the same type of radiometer.

Once those data sets were created, they needed to be transformed into a usable format. Meteorologists are used to the numbers, but incident commanders on an active fire need to see the data in a form that allows them to quickly understand which conditions are changing, and how. That’s where data visualization partners come in. For the Missoula campaign, teams from MITRE, NVIDIA, and Esri joined NASA in the field.

 

Measurements from both the balloon and the drone platforms were immediately sent to the on-site data teams.

President Donald Trump has announced that “high-level” US representatives will meet their Russian counterparts at the Munich Security Conference on Friday to discuss a resolution to the Ukraine conflict.

 

President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart spoke for nearly 90 minutes by phone on Wednesday, marking the first known direct interaction between the Russian and US heads of state since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. On Thursday, Trump said the phone call had paved the way for further direct contacts between American and Russian officials.

 

“They’re having a meeting in Munich tomorrow. Russia is going to be there with our people,” Trump told journalists at the White House on Thursday.

 

Trump added that “Ukraine is also invited, by the way,” but did not specify the format of the meeting or clarify whether it would be a three-way dialogue or a series of bilateral talks.

 

“Not sure exactly who’s going to be there from any country, but high-level people from Russia, from Ukraine, and from the United States,” the US leader added.

 

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier on Thursday that the fact that both presidents had expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue was a “very important achievement” that has “set in motion an apparatus of aides, ministries and so on, that will now gradually begin dialogue and prepare the next contacts.”

 

“Now that the leaders have demonstrated political will and provided their aides with the necessary instructions to initiate communication, we ask for a bit of patience. These discussions need time to gain momentum,” Peskov said.

 

The Munich Security Conference is taking place from February 14 to 16 in Munich, Germany. US Vice President J.D. Vance will lead the American delegation, and is expected to meet with Vladimir Zelensky. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the conference is an opportunity for American officials to “lay out a broad path forward” on Ukraine.

 

Meanwhile, US presidential envoy Keith Kellogg is reportedly expected to make it clear that the US has no intention of deploying troops to protect Ukraine and wants Washington’s European NATO allies to increase their defense spending.

 

Russian officials have not attended the Munich Conference since 2022, and Moscow has yet to confirm its participation this year or announce the composition of its delegation.

Space Norway is set to establish new high-speed connection from the Norwegian mainland to Jan Mayen and Svalbard.

Space Norway has signed a contract with SubCom for the full system supply of the Arctic Way Cable System, including survey, design, manufacturing, and installation.

Scheduled to commence service in 2028, this new system will become a critical asset for transmitting data traffic between the mainland, Jan Mayen, and Svalbard archipelago.

 

"Space Norway owns, develops and manages critical space infrastructure and subsea cable systems.

Establishing this new cable system is imperative to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for the Arctic community and to support Norway's strategic interests.

With SubCom’s proven track record in managing Arctic projects, they are the optimal partner for this significant program," says Morten Tengs, CEO of Space Norway.

First astronaut with disability prepares to launch into space for ISS mission

The first-ever astronaut with a physical disability is ready to launch into space after receiving a green light for a mission onboard the International Space Station (ISS), the European Space Agency (ESA) announced on Friday.

John McFall is a British surgeon and former Paralympian who lost a leg in a motorbike accident when he was 19-years-old, says he is "hugely proud" of clearing the hurdle.

Since the ESA announced McFall as a member of its astronaut reserve in 2022, it has been assessing the feasibility of someone with a prosthesis becoming a crew member on a space mission.

 

On Friday, the ESA announced that McFall had received medical clearance for a long-duration mission onboard the ISS.

McFall emphasised that he was "relatively passive" in the process, and just had to be medically healthy and carry out the required tasks.

 

"This is way bigger than me — this is a cultural shift," he told an online press conference.

There is no date yet for when McFall will get his chance to become what the ESA has dubbed the first "parastronaut".

 

"Now he's an astronaut like everybody else who wants to fly to the space station, waiting for a mission assignment," the ESA's director of human and robotic exploration, Daniel Neuenschwander, said.

The ESA's announcement comes as diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives have come under attack from the new US administration of Donald Trump.

 

"We are now entering a world which is changing a bit from a DEI perspective from one of our partners of the International Space Station," Neuenschwander said.

"We will continue with our European values," he emphasised, adding that all ISS partners — which includes the United States — had given McFall medical clearance.

 

The next phase of the feasibility study will look at some of the hardware needed, including prosthetics, so that McFall can best overcome any additional challenges in space.

McFall said that technologies they are working on "are going to trickle down and have benefits for prosthetic users in wider society as well".

A Tom Hanks-narrated film about humanity’s past and future on the moon is now playing at Space Center Houston.

“The Moonwalkers: A Journey with Tom Hanks” takes viewers on an immersive lunar experience, linking NASA’s Apollo Program that landed men on the moon between 1969 and 1972 with the agency’s Artemis Program that’s striving to return humans to the moon this decade.

 

The film shows actual footage from Apollo missions and conducts interviews with the Artemis II astronauts who are slated to circle the moon next year.

These are projected on the front and side walls, as well as the floor.

“It is an immersive experience,” said Space Center Houston CEO William Harris. “It gives you that sense as if you are on the lunar surface.”

 

Hanks — who previously spent time in Houston to film “Apollo 13” — co-wrote the film with Christopher Riley, a documentary film director and writer who specializes in science, engineering and history.

The film includes images from Andy Saunders’ "Apollo Remastered," where images from Apollo flight film have been digitally remastered to produce high-quality photos.

 

“The Moonwalkers” debuted in London and became available to visitors at Space Center Houston on Friday.

The film is about 50 minutes long and will run multiple times a day. It’s included in the ticket when visiting Space Center Houston.

Mass layoffs at multiple U.S. government agencies have begun as President Donald Trump and Department of Government Efficiency chief Elon Musk accelerate their purge of America's federal bureaucracy, union sources and employees familiar with the layoffs told Reuters on Thursday.

 

Termination emails have been sent in the past 48 hours to scores of government workers, mostly recently hired employees still on probation, at the Education Department, the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the Office of Personnel Management, and the General Services Administration (GSA), which manages many federal buildings.

 

Further, the Department of Energy is set to lay off most or all of its estimated 2,000 probationary employees Thursday, Politico reported.

 

It was not immediately clear on Thursday how many federal workers stood to lose their jobs in the first wave of firings. But the move fulfills Trump's vow to reduce the size of the federal government and root out the "deep state," a reference to bureaucrats he views as not sufficiently loyal to him.

 

"The Agency finds that you are not fit for continued employment because your ability, knowledge and skills do not fit the current needs, and your performance has not been adequate to justify further employment with the Agency," letters sent to at least 45 probationers at the SBA stated.

 

Letters to at least 160 recent hires at the Education Department, also seen by Reuters, told them that their continued employment "would not be in the public interest."

 

 

According to government data, about 280,000 civilian government workers were hired less than two years ago, with most still on probation.

US President Donald Trump and his administration will work to end the promotion of diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) programs across the world, Elon Musk announced at the World Governments Summit in Dubai on Thursday.

 

The billionaire’s statement comes as Trump has launched a campaign aimed at ending DEI initiatives within the federal government since assuming office last month. Shortly after being sworn in, Trump repealed some 78 orders signed by his predecessor Joe Biden. This includes terminating DEI programs and ending protections for transgender individuals. Trump also set a 60-day deadline for federal agencies to cease all DEI-related practices.

 

Speaking via video link at the Dubai forum, Musk, who currently heads Trump’s newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), acknowledged that there has been “a lot of pushing of DEI worldwide” by the US and stressed that the new administration “doesn’t agree” with this approach.

 

“We want to terminate that stuff, and we are,” Musk said.

 

He warned that if DEI principles were allowed to continue and be used to implement “crazy things that are untruthful” and “don’t reflect reality” into things like artificial intelligence, it could easily lead to a “very dystopian outcome.”

 

Earlier this month, the billionaire claimed that DOGE had already saved the US over $1 billion by scrapping over 100 contracts related to DEI programs. Musk also reported that his department has managed to cut federal spending by $1 billion per day by effectively halting “the hiring of people into unnecessary positions, the deletion of DEI, and stopping improper payments to foreign organizations.”

 

Trump has also ordered the dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which was Washington’s primary vehicle for funding political projects abroad. The president accused the agency of wasting taxpayer money on “ridiculous – and in many cases, malicious – pet projects of entrenched bureaucrats,” which included promoting DEI initiative both domestically and internationally.

 

Musk has also called USAID a “criminal organization” and claimed that it had funded bioweapons research.

I) in 1994 and 1979, respectively; Forego’s Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. II) in 1974; Seattle Slew’s Flamingo Stakes (gr. I) in 1977; and John Henry’s Hialeah Turf Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) in 1980.

 

Morton, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., was a Syracuse disc jockey when he applied for the track announcer spot at Finger Lakes. Except for the period he spent recovering from bypass surgery in 2005, he was the only announcer the track knew since it first opened in May, 1962. Morton parlayed that position into duties at both Gulfstream Park and Hialeah.

 

Referred to by many as “The Voice,” his deep, rich voice and precise diction made him a fan favorite and one of the most well-known track announcers in the United States.

New evidence in the 2024 American Family Survey, found that 37 percent of conservative women from the ages of 18-40 reported being satisfied with their life.

Only 12 percent of liberal women in the same group said they felt the same way, while 28 percent of moderate said they were satisfied.

The findings also say that liberal women are nearly three times more likely than conservatives to say they experienced loneliness at least a few times a week.

It also broke down the relationship status of those surveyed, saying that 40 percent of liberal women reported being single, while 31 percent were married.

For conservative women, 33 percent reported being single, while 51 percent were married.

The remaining respondents said that they were in a 'committed relationship' or were 'cohabiting' with a partner.

Conservative women are also more likely to embrace the differences between men and women and prioritize family and attending church.

Pierogi in space

In a first for space cuisine, ESA project astronaut Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski will bring pierogi, the traditional Polish dumplings, to the International Space Station during the upcoming Axiom Mission 4.

Sławosz is bringing a taste of home to space with a special menu created together with a celebrity chef and a family-owned company in Poland.

The food selection includes pierogi stuffed with cabbage and mushrooms, tomato soup with noodles, Polish “leczo” stew with buckwheat, and apple crumble for dessert.

Any food delivered to the International Space Station must be crumb-free, lightweight and keep for at least 24 months.

Most of the space menu consists of canned or freeze-dried meals in plastic packages. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a luxury, only available when a spacecraft arrives with new supplies.

 

Bonus food catered for specific crew members makes up around 10 percent of their menu.

Astronauts say this bonus food adds variety to their dishes, boosts their mental wellbeing and helps them bond with the crew in orbit.

“I wanted a truly Polish menu that I could share with my fellow astronauts. Food brings psychological comfort, and I instantly thought it would be worth taking some Polish delicacies into orbit,” says Sławosz.

 

The pierogi challenge

Pierogi have been part of Polish cuisine since the 13th century. These dumplings remain a staple of Polish home cooking and an essential part of Christmas Eve celebrations.

“When I heard about the possibility of choosing my bonus food menu, pierogi were always at the top of my list! I like to make them myself,” explains Sławosz.

 

The Polish astronaut, who will be conducting over a dozen technological and scientific experiments during the Ignis mission, met an unexpected challenge with his beloved pierogi.

“The first batches kept bursting! It was not only about cooking the food, it was also the technological process behind.

It took us a while to master freeze-drying, to remove moisture from the stuffing through the dough and to dispose of the water left after rehydration,” he admits.

 

Freeze-drying is a long process that completely removes any water from the food, maintaining its properties and structure for years.

Sławosz partnered with Polish family business LYOFOOD, a small company with over three decades of experience with freeze-drying technology that helped to find a solution for pierogi to be enjoyed after adding hot water from the dispensers on the Space Station.

Renowned Polish chef and restaurateur Mateusz Gessler created the main three dishes, while the apple crumble dessert is part of LYOFOOD’s menu.

Food in space

Microgravity has an impact on bone density, muscle tone and nutrients, and it becomes vital that Sławosz's diet contains the fuel he needs.

An astronaut’s space menu comprises a range of food designed to meet nutritional and operational requirements on board.

Teams on the ground start selecting meals months in advance because food must be sent to the lab for safety and nutritional testing after being freeze-dried, thermostabilised or vacuum-packed.

 

Before his Ignis mission takes off, Sławosz participated in several space food tasting sessions and rated food and drinks.

This helped determine what dishes will be included in their basic food supply throughout the mission.

NASA still has the moon in its crosshairs.

The agency has been working to return astronauts to the moon via its Artemis program, which was established in late 2017 in response to a directive from then-U.S. President Donald Trump.

Establishing a sustainable human presence on and around our natural satellite will help us make the next giant leap — the one to Mars, NASA officials have long said.

 

Recent statements by Trump — who was just elected to his second term, and his close adviser Elon Musk have called this "stepping stone" approach into question — however.

In his inaugural address last month, for example, Trump focused on the Red Planet, saying that the United States "will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars."

 

And Musk — the SpaceX founder and CEO whose "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE) is currently auditing (and slashing) the federal bureaucracy — deemed the moon "a distraction" in a December 2024 X post, saying, "we're going straight to Mars."

(That was apparently a reference to SpaceX's internal plans, not those of NASA. But Musk seems to have Trump's ear on many issues, and SpaceX and NASA are key partners on the Artemis program.)

 

Nothing has officially changed with Artemis yet, however. Indeed, the moon is still a big part of NASA's human spaceflight plans, according to acting NASA administrator Janet Petro.

Petro spoke here on Wednesday (Feb. 12) at the 27th annual Commercial Space Conference in a "fireside chat" with Dave Cavossa, president of the Commercial Space Federation.

Among other questions, Cavossa asked Petro what she would regard as a "defining success" of NASA's collaborations with commercial partners 10 to 20 years from now.

 

Petro cited a robust network of private space stations in low Earth orbit, as well as "boots on Mars," which she described as a "super exciting" prospect.

But she also gave some love to Earth's nearest neighbor: "Many, many, many boots on the moon — that, to me, would be incredible to see."

 

Petro — the first woman to ever lead NASA — steered clear of politics during the 25-minute chat.

She didn't discuss DOGE's plans for NASA, for example, or how the Trump administration's anti-DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) push is affecting the agency.

 

It's unclear how long Petro will direct the agency.

Trump has nominated billionaire tech entrepreneur, philanthropist and private astronaut Jared Isaacman to lead NASA on a permanent basis.

BlackSky to support India’s first private Earth observation constellation

U.S.-based Earth observation company BlackSky has been tapped to supply satellite imagery, analytics services, and a high-resolution optical satellite as part of a broader effort led by European aerospace firm Thales Alenia Space to develop a sovereign remote sensing constellation for India’s Nibe Ltd., a growing player in the country’s aerospace and defense industry.

 

The deal, announced last week by Thales Alenia Space, marks a significant step in India’s ambitions to develop its first private Earth observation satellite network.

Under the agreement, Thales Alenia will produce a high-resolution optical satellite, the first of what is expected to be a larger constellation designed to provide critical intelligence for India’s national security and defense agencies.

 

Nibe, a defense conglomerate with a strong foothold in India’s security sector, is spearheading the initiative through its subsidiary NIBE Space.

The company aims to establish an independent space-based monitoring system, positioning itself as a key supplier of satellite intelligence to India’s government and military.

 

The BlackSky-Thales Alenia collaboration in India mirrors a similar agreement the two companies forged last year with the Republic of Indonesia.

As part of the new partnership, BlackSky will assist Thales Alenia in laying the foundation for India’s sovereign Earth observation capabilities, bringing its expertise in geospatial intelligence to the table.

“The customer has taken an innovative two-part adoption approach toward accelerating its space-based monitoring capabilities by first taking advantage of our commercially operated model for on-orbit sensor systems,” Brian O’Toole, CEO of BlackSky, said in a news release Feb. 13.

 

BlackSky, which operates a fleet of small satellites capable of capturing real-time imagery of the Earth, leverages artificial intelligence to analyze vast amounts of geospatial data.

The company’s satellites can revisit locations multiple times a day, identifying changes and potential security threats with high precision.

In addition to supplying imaging and analytics services, BlackSky will deliver a high-resolution satellite to Thales Alenia for India’s project, along with launch support and on-orbit maintenance.

 

BlackSky and Thales Alenia were previously joint owners of the satellite manufacturing firm LeoStella, based in Tukwila, Washington, before BlackSky acquired full ownership in November.

The deal reflects a growing trend where nations are turning to commercial space companies not only for imagery and analytics but also to develop domestic satellite capabilities.

This hybrid approach allows countries to access immediate surveillance capabilities while building long-term sovereign space assets.

The chairs of the congressional committees that oversee civil and commercial spaceflight say their priorities for the new Congress include a NASA authorization bill and commercial space legislation.

In back-to-back speeches at the 27th Annual Commercial Space Conference here Feb. 12, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, and Rep. Brian Babin (R-Texas), chairman of the House Science Committee, outlined similar plans for legislation involving NASA and commercial space activities.

 

One is a NASA authorization bill. A standalone NASA authorization was last signed into law in 2017, although one was included in the CHIPS and Science Act in 2022. Such bills help define agency policies and programs.

Cruz was one of the sponsors of a Senate NASA authorization bill introduced in December in the final days of the 118th Congress. “I plan to reintroduce this bill very soon and will work vigorously to push it forward and have it signed into law,” he said at the conference.

 

A priority for him in that bill is managing the transition from the International Space Station to commercial space stations in low Earth orbit.

The bill “would not only ensure that we have no gap in capability after ISS but would enshrine in statute that it is the official position of the United States to maintain a continuous human presence in LEO,” he said.

“Abandoning LEO in some well-intentioned but misguided effort to focus only on the moon or only on Mars would only allow China to fill that void, driving a wedge between the United States and our partners,” he added. “That’s a path that we’re not going to take.”

 

Babin said a NASA authorization bill is also a priority for his committee, suggesting it would ensure that the agency remains focused on a return to the moon amid speculation that the Trump administration might shift its emphasis to Mars.

“My top priority is ensuring that U.S. astronauts return to the lunar surface and that we do so before the CCP,” or Chinese Communist Party, he said.

“We will use the moon as a proving ground, allowing us to develop and test technologies needed for future deep space missions, including our ultimate goal of landing humans on Mars.”

 

Like Cruz, Babin said his committee’s bill will examine the ISS transition.

“We must give careful thought to how both the International Space Station and upcoming commercial platforms can play a role in accomplishing the United States’ objectives in low Earth orbit,” he said.

“All of this must be accomplished in a funding environment that does not rely on significant budget increases.”

In the previous Congress, Babin introduced a commercial space bill that addressed, among other issues, the long-standing challenge of “mission authorization,” or how the United States regulates commercial space activities beyond traditional uses like launch, communications and remote sensing.

That bill was approved on a party-line vote by the committee in November 2023 but did not advance further.

Babin argued that bill offered a “straightforward approach” to mission authorization that would have given that responsibility to the Commerce Department.

By contrast, a proposal by the Biden administration would have split those responsibilities between the Commerce and Transportation Departments.

“If the United States seeks to be the forum of choice for space operations, it’s critical that we facilitate space commerce by establishing appropriate frameworks for commercial space operators,” he said.

Babin said he will reintroduce commercial space legislation “this very year” to address mission authorization and other issues, like the Commerce Department’s implementation of a civil space traffic coordination system.

 

Cruz said such issues would be a priority for his committee as well.

“It is long past time for Congress not just to debate whether the existing regulatory and governance structures set the commercial space industry up for success but actually take decisive action to ensure that they do,” he said.

That could include, he suggested, moving the FAA’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation out of the agency and making it a standalone entity under the Secretary of Transportation, which is how the office was originally established in the mid-1980s before being moved into FAA a decade later.

 

While NASA authorization and commercial space bills have been introduced in previous Congresses, only to languish in committees or fail to be reconciled with bills from the opposite chamber, there may be a new incentive to get at least a NASA authorization bill passed this year.

Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), chair of the House Appropriations Committee, sent letters to chairs of other committees, including Babin, Feb. 6.

In the letters, he noted that appropriators planned to start work on the fiscal year 2026 appropriations process in late April, an early start given that work on 2025 appropriations is not yet complete.

 

He added in the letter to Babin that both NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have lapsed authorizations.

“As you begin to implement your legislative priorities in the 119th Congress, I know that you will keep these programs in mind,” Cole wrote.

The implication of that language, sources said, is that a lack of an authorization could make those agencies vulnerable to significant spending cuts, either by the committee or by the White House.

USAF backs space energy grid with Star Catcher SBIR Phase I

Star Catcher has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract by AFWERX to further develop space-to-space power beaming technology, aimed at enhancing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) spacecraft.

The initiative is a response to the US Department of the Air Force’s need to augment satellite power capabilities to address immediate operational demands and counter increasing threats from nations such as China and Russia.

 

The company is in the process of creating the Star Catcher Network, which is said to be the first space energy grid.

This network’s objective is to overcome the current power constraints faced by satellites and other spacecraft.

 

Once operational, the Star Catcher Network intends to transmit broad spectrum energy to spacecraft situated in LEO and potentially further afield.

The network is designed to supply on-demand energy to the solar arrays of client spacecraft, providing them energy concentrations that surpass what the Sun can offer.

 

The company notes that this will enable the spacecraft to generate between five and ten times more power without the need for retrofitting.

The enhanced power supply is expected to support more demanding payloads, increase operational uptime, facilitate real-time data processing, and enable the execution of more complex missions.

 

This energy grid will simplify designs and reduce initial costs associated with larger satellite buses and solar arrays.

Star Catcher CEO Andrew Rush said: “This contract marks a significant step toward realizing our vision of a space energy grid.

 

“Space-to-space power beaming is key infrastructure that will fundamentally change how spacecraft access power, enhancing operational capabilities and resilience for both defence and commercial applications.”

The collaboration between the Air Force Research Laboratory and AFWERX is focused on improving the SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer programmes.

 

Their goal is to expedite the process for small businesses from proposal submission to contract award.

It also aims to broaden the opportunities available to them and reduce administrative burdens by seeking and applying process efficiencies in contract management.

Previously, AFWERX chose Knightscope for a Phase I SBIR contract to enhance and fine-tune security measures at US Air Force installations.

To put it in scope/scale, the entire thing only lasted a couple of hours. I think that's probably why they found out about Valarie Jarret, they were running around like chickens w/their heads cut off because they didn't just need to buy their way onto the board, they needed sufficient number of members to buy their way onto the board. 14 States Sue To Block DOGE From Uncovering Government Abuses, Slashing Waste

 

We are now firmly in the lawfare stage of the second Trump presidency, with Democrats filing a flurry of lawsuits to hinder the new administration's agenda until a strong ruling from the Supreme Court eventually sets precedent.

 

In the latest legal move, a group of 14 states have sued Elon Musk and President Donald Trump, alleging that the authority granted to the billionaire and his team at DOGE is unconstitutional. The states, including Arizona, Michigan and Rhode Island, have taken aim at efforts to dramatically reduce the size of the federal workforce, including dismantling entire agencies, as well as their access to sensitive data.

 

"The founders of this country would be outraged that, 250 years after our nation overthrew a king, the people of this country—many of whom have fought and died to protect our freedoms—are now subject to the whims of a single unelected billionaire," said Arizona AG Kris Mayes in a statement reported by NBC News.

 

According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, the lawsuit is nothing more than a "continuation of the weaponization of justice against President Trump," adding "The White House will continue to fight these battles in court, and we expect to be vindicated."

 

Another Thursday lawsuit from a group of government employees sought to block Musk and DOGE from accessing sensitive data and removing federal employees until "Musk is properly appointed pursuant to the U.S. constitution."

 

That lawsuit came on the heels of NY Attorney General Letitia James and 18 other attorneys general suing the Trump administration to block DOGE from accessing personal data housed in the Treasury department, calling it "unconstitutional." A federal judge temporarily granted that request, ruling that the states "will face irreparable harm in the absence of injuctive relief."

 

Meanwhile, 22 state attorneys general were separately granted a request to halt an effort by the Trump administration to make large cuts to federal research agencies.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – The United States Space Force (USSF)’s Space Systems Command (SSC) took the next step in advancing its ability to deliver fast and more agile in-orbit response capabilities to warfighters.

The Command awarded a launch service contract to Firefly Aerospace for $21.81 million for VICTUS SOL, the USSF’s newest Tactically Responsive Space (TacRS) mission.

 

SSC’s Space Safari program office is the end-to-end mission lead for the TacRS mission, and SSC’s Small Launch and Targets division within the Assured Access to Space enterprise is responsible for procuring and executing the VICTUS SOL launch service using the Orbital Services Program (OSP)-4 contract.

OSP-4 provides dedicated and primary launch services to the DoD and other Government agencies.

Space Safari will oversee procurement of the VICTUS SOL space and ground segments, end-to-end integration, and operational support.

 

Space Systems Command is the U.S. Space Force’s field command responsible for acquiring, developing, and delivering resilient capabilities to protect our nation’s strategic advantage in, from, and to space.

Treasury Inspector General Launches Audit Of "Fraudulent Payments" Found By DOGE

 

The US Treasury's Department of Inspector General is launching an investigation into "alleged fraudulent payments" found by Elon Musk's DOGE team, and will analyze the past two years of transactions within the government's payment system. The IG will also review the security controls to the system after Democratic senators freaked out over the access provided by Trump to Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency.

 

According to a Friday letter by Treasury Deputy IG Loren J. Sciurba, the audit will take approximately six months.

 

"We expect to begin our fieldwork immediately," Sciurba wrote. "Given the breadth of this effort, the audit will likely not be completed until August; however, we recognize the danger that improper access or inadequate controls can pose to the integrity of sensitive payment systems. As such, if critical issues come to light before that time, we will issue interim updates and reports."

 

Musk claims to have found massive waste, fraud and abuse - and has launched an official government website for DOGE that will track how large the US government is, and how much DOGE has saved. The site (which still needs a little 'fine tuning') also has an 'unconstitutionality index,' which compares the number of rules passed by Congress in 2024 vs. the number of agency rules created out of thin air.

 

According to the report, the audit comes after Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren (MA) and Ron Wyden (OR) pushed for an inquiry at the US Treasury. On Wednesday, Warren, Wyden, and Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent raising the alarm over DOGE (and not what they've found, of course).

 

"Your lack of candor about these events is deeply troubling given the threats to the economy and the public from DOGE’s meddling, and you need to provide a clear, complete, and public accounting of who accessed the systems, what they were doing, and why they were doing it," wrote the lawmakers.

Several lawsuits have also been filed by labor unions and advocacy groups against DOGE's potential unauthorized access to sensitive Treasury payment systems, while five former treasury secretaries (who ostensibly oversaw massive fraud), have similarly sounded the alarm over what they say are risks associated with DOGE accessing sensitive Treasury Department payment systems.

 

Of course, if the following is true, DOGE may be 100% within its right to access these systems after actually having been established by the Obama administration.

Outrageous Betrayal: Republican-Led Texas House Names Democrat as Speaker Pro-Tem, and Hands Half of New Subcommittees to the Left

 

Republicans chair all committees, as promised, while Democrats will lead half of the newly created subcommittees.

 

House Speaker Dustin Burrows appointed lawmakers to committees on Thursday, announcing a leadership team made up mostly of veterans who had led legislative panels under his predecessors — and appointing only Republicans to chair committees, as prescribed by the chamber’s new rules.

 

In a news release announcing the committee appointments, Burrows emphasized that the makeup of the committees reflected the GOP dominance in the chamber, noting that all were chaired by Republicans and that every standing committee and subcommittee was made up of a GOP majority. Burrows, however, immediately stirred criticism among hardline conservatives for putting Democrats in charge of half the chamber’s 12 newly created subcommittees.

 

Burrows said his committee appointments tried to ensure that lawmakers could use their expertise to contribute to the chamber’s overall goals.

 

“Assigning members to committees is among the most significant and intricate responsibilities of the Speaker — one that demands thoughtful consideration and a delicate balance of many factors,” he said in a statement. “Taking the time to get this right was not just necessary — it is what Texans deserve of their government, and I am confident these appointments will position the House for a productive, successful session.”

 

Burrows, a Lubbock Republican who is weeks into his first term as speaker, kept in place much of the leadership team assembled by his predecessor, Rep. Dade Phelan of Beaumont. He rewarded many allies who stuck with him even after the House Republican Caucus endorsed a different candidate, Rep. David Cook of Mansfield, in the speaker’s race.

 

Among those returning to key positions are: Rep. Greg Bonnen of Friendswood, who will lead the budget-writing Appropriations Committee; Rep. Brad Buckley of Salado, who will lead the Public Education Committee; and Rep. Morgan Meyer, who will lead the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.

 

Also returning to their posts are Burrows allies Brooks Landgraf of Odessa who will again head the Environmental Regulation Committee and Jeff Leach of Plano who will lead the Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee despite a very public disagreement with Gov. Greg Abbott over the planned execution of a death row inmate.

 

Burrows also shuffled around some veteran lawmakers to new roles. GOP Rep. Todd Hunter of Corpus Christi will return to his old post leading the Calendars Committee, which he ran for four terms from 2011 through the 2017 session. The panel sets the agenda for bills heard on the House floor, a crucial position that Burrows held the last two sessions.

Trump ejects from the Ukraine joyride, leaving the EU screaming in the backseat

 

Western European leaders are having a meltdown because shutting them out from talks is the only way to peace

 

The European Union was never in the driver’s seat on the Ukraine conflict. And now that same toddler sitting in the back with the plastic Fisher-Price steering wheel is throwing the kind of full-blown crimson-faced meltdown that makes adults chuckle.

 

How many times was the EU told, including by its own citizens with sledgehammer subtlety at the ballot box, to stop kissing Uncle Sam’s butt and start covering its own? Instead, its leaders cribbed America’s talking points, completely oblivious as they indulged in economic seppuku.

 

The EU’s entire economy-wrecking “strategy” over Ukraine was based on the fantasy that they were America’s little bro, not being used as naive pawns in a grand game that would knock them right off the chessboard. If Washington had picked peace over profit from the start, the closest thing that the Euroclowns would have seen to a military confrontation with Russia in Ukraine would have been playing Sergeant Savoir-Faire back home, armed with a map of the nearest coffee shops and a five-course lunch.

 

And now the previously unthinkable has happened. The jig is up on Biden’s ridiculous scam of vowing to do “whatever it takes” for Ukraine to beat Russia on the battlefield – mainly by dumping cash into US weapons which miraculously get lost en route to the frontlines after the cheque clears.

 

Nice racket. Too bad it’s getting people killed – something Trump’s made it clear he’s not exactly a fan of. Looks like he’s finally asked himself if there’s a way for the US to keep feasting on cash without a body count in Ukraine. Spoiler alert: he found a way, apparently. Several, in fact.

 

Cutting to the chase through all this messy death and destruction stuff, Trump just wants to wrap up the fighting and have Ukraine hand over its resources to cover US spending — most of which has already gone straight into the pockets of American weapons industries. And can he keep the weapon sales flowing, even without active conflict? Absolutely. Just tell NATO countries to cough up some cash for the sake of “preventive defense,” like he’s been doing relentlessly. A solid 90% of EU-bought weapons are already American, according to last year’s EU competitiveness report. And that’s not changing anytime soon – unless the EU’s itching for a tariff-spanking.

 

A group of European foreign ministers have issued a statement insisting that Ukraine and the EU must be at the table for any peace talks. Yeah, they’re at the table alright – the bib-wearing kiddie table, along with Ukraine. And while they’re busy twisting balloon animals and tossing around buzzwords like ‘enhancing support for Ukraine,’ totally immersed in their ‘choose your own adventure’ game where they’re obviously ‘winning,’ it turns out that Russia and the US – Putin and Trump – did something totally wild. They picked up a phone. Probably even a landline, like something out of a history book. All while the EU was bravely ‘sticking it to Putin’ by flaming him on social media while wiping croissant crumbs off their keyboard between sips of overpriced lattes.

 

In the wake of that call, Trump announced the start of immediate negotiations for peace. And now the EU is acting like it’s just been dumped by Uncle Sam, who’s committing the added insult of hanging around with the guy on whom they’ve been obsessively hating. “If there is agreement made behind our backs it will simply not work because you need for any kind of deal, any kind of agreement, you need Europeans to implement this deal. You need the Ukrainians to implement this deal,” said the bloc’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas.

That’s right—the guy who claims he’s putting a check on out-of-control budgets is perfectly fine with funneling even more money into the already bloated, nearly $1 trillion-a-year military-industrial complex. Meanwhile, no one is supposed to care that he just handed Tesla a $400 million government contract to build armored vehicles—straight into the pocket of Musk, the very guy claiming to be the champion of cutting government waste.

 

The Hypocrisy is Blinding

According to The Independent, Trump sat down for an interview with Fox News this week, where he openly stated:

 

“We want to raise defense spending. I think we have to have it.”

 

All while claiming that DOGE will be "checking the military." The mental gymnastics required to believe both of these statements at the same time is truly astounding. You don’t “check” the military by giving them a blank check—yet here we are, with Trump pushing for even more defense spending while pretending to be a fiscal conservative.

 

And let’s not forget, this comes at a time when Musk’s DOGE is slashing other government programs under the guise of “cutting waste.” But cutting waste for whom? Because it sure as hell isn’t the defense contractors who get fat off of endless war and overpriced military gear.

 

Tesla’s $400 Million Handout—Because ‘Limited Government’ Means Enriching Your Friends

And just in case anyone thought Trump’s version of cutting spending was about actual fiscal responsibility, let’s take a look at the latest $400 million no-bid contract for armored Tesla vehicles.

 

As NPR reports, Musk’s own company was set to receive the lucrative contract until the State Department edited the document to remove the name "Tesla" after reports began circulating. But the contract still stands—$400 million for "armored electric vehicles," a.k.a. Cybertrucks in government-issued camo.

 

Remember when Trump supporters used to bash government handouts? Apparently, that outrage is very selective.

The Czech Republic’s globalist governing majority has voted to strip populist political leader Tomio Okamura—founder of the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party and a member of the Chamber of Deputies—of legal immunity. Consequently, this will expose the Japanese-born Czech politician to prosecution over allegedly offensive campaign posters, with Okamura potentially facing a total of three years in prison.

 

Reminiscent of the lawfare campaign waged by former President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party against President Donald J. Trump in the United States, it appears the Czech government is seeking dubious legal means to blunt the country’s populist political insurgency. A series of campaign posts used by the SPD during last year’s Czech elections are at the center of the legal complaint against Okamura. Another poster included in the complaint features several Roma—commonly known by the exonym “Gypsy”—huddled smoking cigarettes instead of being at school. The Czech police claim this poster “has a racist undertone aimed at the Roma ethnic group.”In an interview with the Czech newspaper Deník N, police spokesman Jan Daněk suggested that the parliamentary vote to strip Okamura of immunity likely opens the door to criminal prosecution. “The initiation of criminal prosecution is the most probable outcome,” Daněk said.

 

Meanwhile, Okamura remains defiant, responding to the immunity vote by stating: “The governing coalition will not silence me. I am facing a political trial.”

Canadian charged with illegally flying drone over Patrick Space Force, launch sites

A Canadian man faces several charges after federal prosecutors say he used an unmanned drone to photograph sensitive military sites in Brevard, including Patrick Space Force Base, a submarine wharf and a space launch complex at Cape Canaveral Space Force Base.

Xiao Guang Pan — whose Instagram page describes him as photographer and licensed drone pilot — was charged earlier this week with three counts of using an unmanned aircraft to photograph the Brevard-based defense installations without authorization from federal officials. Taking unauthorized photos of defense installations is prohibited by federal law.

 

Prosecutors said Pan, 71, was in the U.S. on a tourist visa. He was expected to go before a federal judge Friday.

Pan, if convicted in federal court, could face up to one year in federal prison on each county.

 

Drone sightings in New Jersey

The drone was flown over the sites on three separate days in January. No motives were ascribed to the flyovers in federal court documents filed in the case.

Details of how the drone incursions were tracked and traced back to Pan were not immediately released.

 

The incidents at Brevard's military installations — investigated by Homeland Security, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the FBI — came after several military bases in the northeast reported mystery drones along with a rash of reported sightings in New Jersey.

In January, the White House issued a statement saying the bulk of the sightings were government-related.

“After research and study, the drones that were flying over New Jersey in large numbers were authorized to be flown by the FAA for research and various other reasons,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said as questions mounted about the incidents.

 

In December, federal prosecutors charged a northern California man with flying a drone over Vandenberg Space Force Base, the Justice Department reported.

Yinpiao Zhou, 39, was charged with failure to register an aircraft not providing transportation and violation of national defense airspace.

He was placed into federal custody. In that case, Vandenberg’s drone detection systems tracked a drone that flew for over an hour about one mile above ground, according to the Justice Department.

200,000 probationary federal employees fired

 

The Trump administration has directed federal agencies to fire most trial period and probationary staff within two days. This decision targets many of the roughly 200,000 people hired by the federal government within the last two years.

 

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has advised agencies to dismiss employees who are still within their probationary period, typically one or two years. This directive affects 200,000 probationary employees. Additionally, about 75,000 federal employees have accepted buyouts. In total, 275,000 federal employees are impacted by these measures.

Not a drone: NJ man charged with aiming laser at federal aircraft

A Monmouth County man has been charged with aiming the beam of a laser at an aircraft.

Federal authorities say 27-year-old James M. Pedone of Colts Neck had an initial appearance in Newark federal court on Wednesday.

Authorities allege that on or around December 12th, Pedone pointed the beam of a laser on three separate occasions, striking an aircraft operated by federal law enforcement personnel, erroneously believing the aircraft to be a drone.

 

Knowingly aiming a laser beam at an aircraft can send someone to prison for up to five years along with a $250,000 fine.

Acting U.S. Attorney Vikas Khanna thanked those with the FBI's Newark Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Colts Neck Police Department for their work in this case.

Syria Warns Kurds Will Be Excluded From National Dialogue If They Don’t Disarm and Submit

 

Turkish DM offers to ‘relocate’ troops into northern Syria as fighting rages

 

The fighting between the Kurdish SDF and the forces of Turkey and its proxy the SNA continues apace in northern Syria with no signs of ending. Turkey targeted civilian infrastructure, leading to power outages and water cutoffs for some 100 Kurdish villages around Tabqa.

 

Turkey’s interest in Syria is driven by the Erdogan government’s desire to tamp down Kurdish autonomy in the region. Turkey is pushing the new Islamist government to do more against the Kurds, and the Turkish Defense Ministry has offered to “relocate” Turkish ground troops into northern Syria to that end.

 

So far, the al-Qaeda linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the new government in Syria, hasn’t moved militarily against the Kurds directly, but it has repeatedly denounced the idea of Kurdish autonomy and is stepping up the rhetoric.

 

The Syrian government has issued a statement warning that if the Kurds don’t agree to disarm and submit, they will be excluded from the meetings on national dialogue between various Syrian parties. The meetings are meant to produce a statement related to the eventual creation of a constitution.

 

The spokesman of that national dialogue committee meanwhile has insisted that the Kurdish SDF “do not represent our people,” and that only groups that the HTS believes do represent Syria will be allowed to participate.

 

Turkey is keen for the new Syria to eliminate all autonomy, particularly the Kurdish sort. In the past month Turkey has threatened a full invasion of Syria if the SDF isn’t totally eliminated. Turkey has also urged the HTS government to take control of the ISIS prison camps in the northeast, which are also run by the SDF.

 

Groups within the Kurdish autonomous government in Syria, the AANES, have emphasized the importance their ability to continue protecting their rights within the new Syria. This includes ongoing training exercises for their fighting forces, which runs contrary to Turkey’s vision for the region.

 

The AANES, however, aren’t focused exclusively on armed resistance to Turkey or exclusion from the conversation on where Syria is going. The group is sending representatives to the Munich Security Conference scheduled for this weekend.

 

The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pederson, applauded reports of a communication channel between the HTS government and the SDF. He did qualify this, saying that “genuine compromises” are needed for the region to become peaceful and stable.

ADDRESSING THE RISE OF CHRONIC ILLNESSES: President Trump understands that America’s healthcare system is largely focused on treating chronic illnesses rather than preventing them, leading to a growing health crisis with serious economic and national security consequences.

Based on all health indicators and global comparisons, Americans are becoming sicker, beset by illnesses that our medical system isn’t addressing effectively.

In the United States, six in 10 adults have at least one chronic condition, and four in 10 have two or more.

Prior to COVID, American life expectancy averaged 78.8 years, while comparable countries averaged 82.6 years, creating a gap that equates to 1.25 billion fewer life years for Americans.

Water main break leads to boil orders in multiple Chicago suburbs

Multiple boil orders were issued Friday as a water main break in Skokie forced the closures of numerous schools, shut down area roadways and left many without water supply.

Both Skokie and Evanston issued boil orders to residents due to the "significant" break, which began early Friday morning at East Prairie Road and Emerson Street. Photos from the area showed entire streets flooded, with vehicles on roads partially submerged in some spots.

 

Multiple road closures were in place as crews worked to repair the break, the village said.

It was not immediately clear how long the boil order would last.

 

In Skokie, officials said it "will remain in effect until laboratory sampling confirms water quality has been fully restored."

In Evanston, residents were warned that "the Village of Skokie has not established a specific timeline for completing repairs related to the recent water main break."

"The Village of Skokie and City of Evanston crews are actively working to address the issue and restore water service to affected areas," an alert to residents stated.

Where is the water main break and what areas are impacted?

The break occurred at approximately 5:15 a.m. Friday at East Prairie Road and Emerson Street.

Multiple road closures were in place, including closures at McCormick from Dempster to Golf, and East Prairie from Church to Golf.

"Avoid the area," Skokie officials said.

 

Evanston officials released the following map for impacted areas:

 

School closures

Skokie-Morton Grove District 69 announced Friday morning that all schools would be closed "due to a water main break impacting our water."

Further details weren't immediately released, but the district already had a "non-attendance day" planned for students.

 

Other impacts

Endeavor Health noted that its Skokie and Evanston locations were impacted by the water main break, leading them to cancel all appointments for Friday.

"The safety and quality of care for our patients remain our top priorities. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding," the hospital group said in a message on its website.

 

The Evanston locations impacted include:

1000 Central St.

The COS Building (2500 Ridge Ave.)

Astonishing amount government spent on giving migrants cars, homes and credit cards

 

The Department of Health and Human Service (HHS) doled out grants worth an eyewatering $22.6 billion from 2020 to 2024 to help migrants, according to a watchdog report.

 

According to findings by auditors OpenTheBooks, the HHS' Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) even handed out money to help migrants buy cars and homes.

 

Given the job of settling migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, the ORR increased the number of non-citizens eligible to receive funding under President Joe Biden.

 

In doing so, they handed out the funds to cover a wide range of benefits including housing, vehicles, small business loans, credit repair, legal aid and Medicaid.

 

Roughly $10 billion alone was shelled out to grant-receiving organizations just in 2023.

 

Some of the programs were also only available to migrants or refugees who had been in the country for a number of years, were employed or making double the poverty limit.

 

However, the majority of the $22.6 billion was spent on unaccompanied migrant children, with $12.4 billion being spent over five years.

 

OpenTheBooks CEO John Hart told The New York Post: 'ORR is part of a troubling trend of using nonprofit groups as ideological proxies.
