Problem with magnetic tapes (and I still have some oldies stashed in a closet collecting dust I need to go through someday) is that they do not have a very long shelf life. They get data rot and are super susceptible to harsh temperatures (cold or hot) and humidity. Time wears them over the years too. Many will not last over 12 years if they sit around the house not being played. I've had to throw hundreds of them away over the years simply because I could hear more static than I could of actual music.

Americans on food stamps could be banned from buying ‘bad food and sugary drinks,’ Trump USDA chief says

WASHINGTON — Americans on food stamps may be banned from using them to buy “sugary drinks” and other junk food, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said Friday.

The newly appointed cabinet official said she will work with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — to prioritize food-stamp benefits for healthy food items.

“Will we ever take food out of a hungry child’s mouth? Of course not, this is the United States of America, Rollins told reporters on the White House driveway.

“Truly, this program has grown so large, especially in the last administration. Under Biden, I think [the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] grew almost 30% more than before. We really need to look at where that money is going, what it’s being spent on,” she said.

“I look forward to working with Bobby Kennedy as we figure out, ‘Do we have the healthiest choices?’ So when a taxpayer is putting money into SNAP, are we OK with us using their tax dollars to feed really bad food and sugary drinks to children who perhaps need something more nutritious?”

Rollins and Kennedy were both confirmed by the Senate Thursday and will serve on President Trump’s new 13-member Make America Healthy Again commission.

In fiscal 2023, 42.1 million people received SNAP benefits, according to USDA.

The program’s cost was $112.8 billion annually, with benefits averaging $211.93 per month.

It’s unclear how the plan might work, though the idea already is under consideration in Congress.

A bill from Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-Okla.) would restrict the use of SNAP benefits on “soft drinks, candy, ice cream, prepared desserts such as cakes, pies, cookies, or similar products.”

A different and bipartisan bill sponsored by Brecheen and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) would authorize a study of SNAP purchases to “add improving nutrition security and diet quality to Congress’ declaration of policy for SNAP.”

Rollins also said she would welcome “a business perspective” in particular from Musk’s DOGE team in making the best use of food stamp funding.

“Oftentimes these government programs are started with the idea that you’re going to help people — it’s not a handout, it’s a hand up — and then years later the programs are even bigger and more people on them. And are we really giving people a hand up or is it really a handout?” she said.

“If we can have a whole other group of really smart people looking at SNAP and other programs at USDA that will allow us to ensure, ‘What are our metrics for success?'”

The Army is repurposing more than half of the money it collects from junior enlisted soldiers for food, according to data reviewed by Military.com. The numbers suggest that a large portion of those funds are not going toward feeding soldiers, a diversion of resources coming at a time when troops increasingly struggle to find nutritious food on base.

The money is collected in what amounts to a tax on troops – taken from their Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) payments, roughly $460 per month that is automatically deducted from the paychecks of service members who live in barracks and is intended to help cover food costs. For junior enlisted troops who earn about $30,000 annually, the cost can be consequential.

2024 financial records provided by the service from 11 of the Army's largest bases show that more than $151 million of $225 million collected from soldiers was not spent on food. Given that the Army operates 104 garrisons, the true amount of unspent funds is likely far higher.

"It's just returned to the big pool of Army funds, and it's used someplace else," one service official with direct knowledge of the situation said during an interview that was arranged by the Army public affairs office, referring to redirected BAS money collected from soldiers.

At Fort Stewart, Georgia, for example, soldiers contributed $17 million, but the base spent just $2.1 million – redirecting 87% of the funds. Schofield Barracks in Hawaii collected $14.5 million but used only $5.3 million, meaning 63% of the money was used elsewhere.

All but two bases left more than half of the money for food unspent. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska and Fort Bliss, Texas, left 41% and 49% of funds on the table, respectively.

It's unclear what specifically the additional funds taken from soldiers are being spent on, but they do not appear to be going toward feeding soldiers. Major expenses such as dining hall infrastructure and food service worker salaries come from separate funding sources and, when pressed repeatedly by Military.com, Army officials declined to provide additional financial data.

The group also donated $25,000 to the Marcy Lab School in Brooklyn, where Craig joined the board in 2024, public records show, and in 2022 Craig also took in $120,000 from Archewell, per the federal filings.

Craig, 33, previously worked at Washington DC research firm Greenberg, Quinlan and Rosner. Regarded an expert on elections, Craig worked her way up to being Senior Director of Digital Strategy by 2016 and then became Vice President of the company between 2018 and 2021.

The firm’s website boasts of how it helped Bill Clinton become President in 1992 and then “helped our clients campaign, win, govern and win again.”

One of company’s digital strategies during the last election cycle was to counter narratives about Joe Biden’s age and negative comments about his family, according to reports.

Craig boasts about what she can bring to projects online, saying she “designed and deployed Smart Social Listening – strategies for political candidates, public officials, community leaders, and corporate leaders to stay on offense,” on her LinkedIn profile.

Archewell also gave $90,000 to Markup News Inc., a New York-based non-profit also funded by Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and controversial billionaire and Democratic mega-donor George Soros’ Open Society Foundations.

The charity’s funding of progressive Democratic causes has raised eyebrows. Nile Gardiner, a fellow at conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, has called for Archewell’s donations to be scrutinized by Congress.

“Harry and Meghan still retain royal titles and should not be engaging in any way in political activity,” said Gardiner. “It’s actually outrageous.”

Archewell’s biggest donation — $250,000 — was to the Women’s Wellness Space, a Pennsylvania-based charity set up by Ashley Biden, daughter of former President Biden, in 2023. The charity’s mission is to help women impacted by trauma, according to reports. It opened its doors in 2024.

A Mexican Senate commission has approved the entry of members of the U.S. Army’s 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) into the country starting this week.

The Americans will come fully armed as part of a mission to train the Mexican Navy’s Infantería de Marina (marine infantry) on conventional and non-conventional types of combat.

The training takes place from Feb. 17 through March 30 at the Luis Carpizo naval facility in the state of Campeche, according to Sen. Alejandro Moreno Cardenas, president of the Mexican Senate’s Naval Ministry Commission.

The Americans are landing in a C-130 airplane in Campeche two days prior to the start of the training, Moreno said.

The commission unanimously approved the mission without discussion or dissent on Tuesday. The vote came at the request of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the senator said.

The 7th Special Forces Group, whose motto is De Opresso Liber! (Free the oppressed!), has participated in peacekeeping operations in Panama, Peru and Ecuador, and has been deployed to Afghanistan. By Friday, those conversations had spilled out into public view — with even New York Attorney General Letitia James telling reporters at an unrelated press conference that there were “a number of discussions going on” about the mayor’s future.

“I’m going to refrain from any comment until such time as we complete those discussions and determine the fate of the mayor of the city of New York,” she said.

It came after the acting Manhattan US Attorney, Danielle Sassoon, resigned Thursday rather than obey the orders — accusing the DOJ and Adams in a scathing resignation letter of engaging in an illegal “quid pro quo” to help Trump’s immigration agenda in exchange for the case being dropped.

Hochul’s second-in-command, Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado, led calls for Adams to step down late Thursday as he slung accusations that the Big Apple leader was deep in Trump’s pocket.

“New York City deserves a Mayor accountable to the people, not beholden to the President. Mayor Adams should step down,” Delgado fired off in a post on X.

Delgado stopped short of calling on Hochul to exercise her obscure power to remove a sitting mayor, telling reporters Friday, “I think the first step is to call for resignation.”
