Von Der Leyen's Scandals: From 'Pfizergate' to Favoritism and Vanishing Texts

 

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyenโ€™s track record as a politician is marred by a number of serious accusations.

 

Favoritism

 

โ€ข In 2024, she generated controversy by appointing Germanyโ€™s Markus Pieper โ€“ member of the same German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party as her โ€“ to the lucrative position of EU Envoy for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME).

 

โ€ข Pieperโ€™s CDU membership, along with claims that two other candidates short-listed for the SME envoy office scored higher than him during the selection process, led to von der Leyen being accused of favoritism.

 

โ€ข Franceโ€™s European Commissioner Thierry Breton even resigned in September over this row, citing von der Leyenโ€™s โ€œquestionable governance.โ€

 

Pfizergate

 

โ€ข During the COVID pandemic, von der Leyen made a deal with US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla to purchase 1.8 billion doses of then-untested COVID vaccines worth about $37.6 billion.

 

โ€ข Von der Leyen negotiated this deal via a series of text messages that she ended up deleting โ€“ ostensibly by accident โ€“ along with those she exchanged with her husband Heiko, medical director at a biotech firm with ties to Pfizer.

 

โ€ข As a result, von der Leyen was accused of corruption and โ€œusurpation of functions and title,โ€ and is currently being sued in Liege by Belgian lobbyist Frederic Baldan.

 

'Consultancy Firms Affair'

 

โ€ข At the end of her 2013-2019 tenure as Germanyโ€™s minister of defense, von der Leyen became the target of a probe by the Federal Audit Office over her practice of awarding lucrative contracts to external consultancy firms.

 

โ€ข In its 2018 report, the Federal Audit Office cast doubt on the procedures for awarding some of these contracts worth MILLIONS of euros, which was apparently done without a proper assessment of the costs or a proper competition.

 

Daughter's Employment

 

โ€ข One such consultancy firm, the US-based McKinsey, attracted attention after the head of its Berlin office Katrin Suder was hired as von der Leyenโ€™s aide. While the firm ended up receiving contracts worth millions of euros from the Defense Ministry, von der Leyenโ€™s eldest daughter Johanna found employment at McKinsey.

 

โ€ข Curiously, a phone belonging to von der Leyen got wiped of all data after German MPs sought to use the text messages it contained as evidence in this case. The German Ministry of Defense said at the time that this wipe was done "for security reasons."

Maybe you should try it they are not as intimidating as some try to make them out to be. They are some of the most gentle and forgiving people you will find. Some maybe have not met maybe as smart or gifted as they can be.

I think if anything is consider it should be in writing between the couples not as a law for all people with in the state. This is something that is a small government idea with power reserved for the people so to speak to place it back in their own hands.

I think it is best to not try to make a topic of argument about what someone gets before you know they know the person period so on.

Some people feel they are entitled to things and want to complain after the fact. This why it is best to address things as they become important.

 

I often gave woman advice that they should check in 3 months saying is this relationship going some where or is what they want but also it is ok to just be as well. Trump DOJ fires 20 Biden immigration judges

 

The Trump administration has canned 20 โ€œmidnightโ€ immigration judges the Biden administration tried to shoehorn onto the courts in its final days, The Washington Times has learned.

 

Thirteen judges hired in late December and early January were ousted Friday, a Justice Department source said.

 

Seven assistant chief immigration judges were also axed.

 

The housecleaning matches one the Biden administration did when it took office in 2021, clearing out many Trump picks from the immigration courts.

 

Among the new firings, according to the department source, was Kerry Doyle. She had been a critic of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement before she was appointed to be ICEโ€™s principal legal adviser.

 

While at ICE, she shepherded through lenient policies toward illegal immigrants. The Biden administration then tried to burrow her into the regular civil service by converting her from a political appointee, the department source said.

 

Ms. Doyleโ€™s name was still listed on the court list of the Justice Departmentโ€™s Executive Office for Immigration Review as of Friday night.

 

EOIR used to be considered outside political give-and-take, but when Joe Biden took over, his administration moved to weed out people it saw as too tied to President Trump.

 

By 2023, the Biden administration had purged six of the 10 senior executive posts at EOIR.

 

And more than 10 immigration judges recruited in the Trump era were terminated at the end of their probationary period or resigned instead of being fired, The Times reported.

 

The Trump Justice Department sees its moves as following in those footsteps.

 

โ€œThe Biden administration set a precedent by terminating numerous immigration judges during their term or trial periods for the first time in EOIR history. So, itโ€™s not surprising that EOIR is following that precedent,โ€ the senior department official said.

 

The Times has sought comment from immigration lawyer groups.

 

Immigration judges are not part of the regular courts. Rather, theyโ€™re employees of EOIR.

 

The ousted judges hadnโ€™t been through training or heard any cases.

 

The firings come weeks after the Trump administration decapitated the leadership that Mr. Biden installed at EOIR.

 

Fired in January were the acting director at EOIR, the chief immigration judge, the general counsel and the head of policy.
