Military says it fired on men approaching troops east of Rafah, again warns Gazans to stay away from soldiers still deployed as per truce deal; 2nd strike was warning to car near soldiers

The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out a pair of drone strikes in the Gaza Strip on Sunday — one targeting a group of gunmen who were approaching Israeli forces in one area and the other as a warning when a car drove near soldiers in another.

 

Palestinian media reported that the first drone strike killed three Hamas police officers east of the city of Rafah in the southern Strip, which the terror group called “a serious violation” of the ceasefire in effect since January 19.

 

“The IDF continues to call on Gazans to obey the IDF instructions and not approach the forces deployed to the area,” the Israeli military said.

 

The Hamas-controlled interior ministry in Gaza said it “condemns this crime and calls upon the mediators and the international community to compel the occupation to stop targeting the police force, which is a civil apparatus.”

 

It claimed the policemen were deployed in the area to secure the entry of aid trucks into Gaza.

US gives green light for bird flu vaccine for poultry

 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has granted Zoetis a conditional license for its Avian Influenza Vaccine, H5N2 Subtype, Killed Virus, intended for use in chickens.

 

According to Reuters, this approval is based on demonstrated safety, purity, and a reasonable expectation of efficacy supported by serology data.

 

A conditional license is issued to address emergency conditions, limited markets, or special circumstances and is valid for a finite period, subject to renewal at the USDA’s discretion.

 

 

National regulatory authorities, in collaboration with the poultry industry, make the decision to vaccinate commercial poultry flocks against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

 

Zoetis has a history of developing avian influenza vaccines; in 2016, the company received a conditional license for its H5N1 vaccine, which was later used to protect California condors in 2023.

 

Additionally, Zoetis holds a USDA license for POULVAC® FLUFEND™ i AI H5N3 RG, utilized in 2024 to safeguard endangered birds in New Zealand.

 

Since February 2022, HPAI has affected over 150 million birds in the U.S., impacting both backyard and commercial flocks.

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers the risk to the general public to be low, as most human infections have occurred among farm workers exposed to infected animals.

 

However, experts caution that the virus could mutate, potentially increasing the risk of human-to-human transmission.

 

In response to the outbreak, the USDA is updating its stockpile of avian influenza vaccines to match the circulating virus strains.

 

Other companies, including Merck and Ceva, along with U.S. government researchers, are also developing vaccines to combat the spread of avian influenza.

 

The conditional approval of Zoetis’ vaccine represents a significant step in addressing the ongoing avian influenza crisis, providing poultry producers with an additional tool to protect their flocks and mitigate the impact of future outbreaks.

Isabel Delamere, for prosecution, told jurors at Guildford Crown Court that conversations were beyond fantasy.

A trial heard how the pair discussed targeting children outside school gates while pretending to be a talent coach or music manager and how to avoid CCTV.

Ireland allegedly said in one of the messages 'all I'm thinking of is making out with a 13' and in another he told the volunteer 'every day passes and I wanna do something terrible with you', the court heard.

Sutton and Ireland also described themselves as 'pedos' in messages.

EU nation rejects Zelensky’s call for bloc-wide army

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has reiterated his country’s opposition to a possible unified military

 

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has dismissed Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s proposal to create an “army of Europe.” Poland has consistently rejected the idea of a unified EU military, and has strongly advocated that the US maintains its dominant role in security on the continent.

 

“I think we should be careful with this term because different people understand different things. If you understand by it the unification of national armies, it will not happen,” Sikorski told state news channel TVP World on Saturday. He added that strengthening the bloc’s defense component should complement US-led NATO efforts, not replace them.

 

Zelensky called for the creation of a unified EU force at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, a day after US Vice President J.D. Vance levelled heavy criticism at European nations. Vance showed that “decades of the old relationship between Europe and America are ending,” Zelensky said. (Ukraine is not in EU nor NATO and he certainly won’t get it now or ever. Ukraine has always been used by Europe and EU as the Mafia, money laundering and CIA purposes. Zelensky fucked himself forever.)

 

Some 22 EU states are currently members of NATO, with the US-led pact effectively determining security policy on the continent since the start of the Cold War. However, several EU leaders have in the past floated the idea of pooling their militaries into a common force independent of the US.

 

Then Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said in November 2023 that “any competition between [NATO] and the EU when it comes to security is a very bad thing,” and that Warsaw had chosen a close partnership with the US over “some imaginary European army.” The country has significantly bolstered its military collaboration with Washington in recent years. Warsaw purchased $10 billion worth of HIMARS rocket artillery systems, secured a $2 billion loan from the US for military modernization, and now hosts its first permanent US base in Poznan.

 

Before the Ukraine conflict, French President Emmanuel Macron and former German Chancellor Angela Merkel were among the most vocal advocates of establishing an EU army. In 2019, Macron described NATO as “brain dead”and urged European leaders to pursue a policy of “strategic autonomy” from Washington.

 

Italy voiced the idea of a joint military last January. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has argued that the bloc cannot have a credible foreign policy without a joint military.

 

The conflict in Ukraine has apparently put a damper on such discussion. Macron has shifted his rhetoric on NATO and now supports the expansion of the US-led alliance. Merkel’s replacement, Olaf Scholz, still speaks of the need for “a more sovereign… European Union,”but has remained silent on the idea of building what Merkel called “a real, true European army.”

 

When talk of an independent European force first surfaced two decades ago, then US Secretary of Defense William Cohen called the idea “a threat to the very existence of NATO.”

Trump’s envoy signals possible Ukraine concessions

President Vladimir Putin has previously indicated that Moscow would be open to talks if Kiev withdrew its troops from Russian regions

 

Territorial concessions may be part of future peace talks between Moscow and Kiev, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy on Russia and Ukraine has suggested. Speaking on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference, Keith Kelloggemphasized that while some things are off the table, compromise could play a role in the negotiations.

 

“Some of [the concessions] are unrealistic to expect where you’d want to go to, but it’s territorial. It could be the engagement of refusing to use force, renouncement of the use of force into the future,” Kellogg said.

 

He added that both Russia and Ukraine might have to make concessions during talks.

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously indicated that Moscow would be open to an immediate ceasefire and peace talks if Ukraine withdrew its troops from the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions, which formally joined Russia following referendums in 2022. However, in August 2024, Putin dismissed negotiations, citing the Ukrainian military presence in Russia’s Kursk Region.

 

Kellogg also mentioned the necessity of “breaking alliances” between Russia and North Korea, Iran, and China, which he claims have strengthened over the past four years.

 

Earlier this week, Putin spoke by phone with Trump, marking the first known high-level direct contact between Moscow and Washington since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

 

According to the Kremlin, Trump expressed support for the swift cessation of hostilities and a peaceful resolution, while Putin mentioned a need to address the root causes of the conflict, agreeing that a long-term settlement could be achieved through negotiations. Following the conversation, the US President wrote on his platform Truth Social that Washington and Moscow were immediately beginning discussions to end the fighting.

 

Russia has yet to confirm any details, but according to multiple media reports, a US delegation – likely composed of national security officials – will travel to Saudi Arabia in the coming days for talks with their counterparts from Moscow.

 

Trump also said that American and Russian officials might meet during the conference in Munich, adding that Ukraine was also invited to participate. However, no such meeting was reported by the conference organizers or news outlets.

Germany is supposed to report military capacities for Ukraine

 

President Trump is pushing for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine at a rapid pace. While the Europeans still complain that they are not involved, the US government is already taking additional stakes: the allies should list soldiers and weapons using a questionnaire.

 

The US government has asked Germany and other European allies to report possible contributions to security guarantees for Ukraine. The countries should indicate, among other things, how many soldiers they could send to Ukraine for a peacekeeping force or training programs after the end of the Russian war of aggression. It is also said to be about weapon systems and what is expected of the United States.

The background to the US request is obviously US President Donald Trump's plan to negotiate a solution to an end to the Russian war against Ukraine at a meeting with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. He expects Europeans to take responsibility for Russia not to attack Ukraine again after a possible agreement. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference that he knew that the questionnaire was available. He hadn't seen him himself, but he could fully understand that he was helping to focus the conversations.

According to diplomats, the question of what Europeans can contribute to a possible peace deal should also be discussed at a meeting of Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other European heads of state and government in Paris. I come in peace. I have a topic I wish to share with this board so that the information can never be withheld. I’ll try to be quick with my writings as things in motion are now moving forward at a pace that current attention spans have a difficult time comprehending.

The US military is using Tier One operators, under the intel from these criminals to hunt, apprehend, and in some cases kill targets that are integral to their operation. They’ve since been 100 percent successful.

 

Once the operation is complete, the US will use old laws and new ones together to allow the US military to take control of the legal system to capture and detain US politicians and some citizens responsible for the treason committed against the country.

 

If you watch flights in and out of GITMO, you’ll recognize that some are military and some are civilian. Civilian craft are judges, politicians, and chiefs of staff. Openly, not covert. There exists no true secrecy, as the entire operation is conducted under existing laws and nobody guilty are under the impression that this operation doesn’t exist.

 

DC realty is the biggest clue as to who is being questioned and detained. 95 percent of them are not targets, but are being questioned out of the country.

 

Two things must occur before the operation goes into full effect. FBI needs a sworn in director. That happens Monday. The second requires ODNI to certify a warrant to the SC to enact those old laws, just to ensure nobody can weaponize bureaucracy to stop it.

 

If what I know happens the way we know it will happen, I expect the entire operation should be complete in less than a month.

Vance meets leader of ‘firewalled’ German party backed by Musk

The US vice president has slammed mainstream European politicians for “fearing” their own voters

 

US Vice President J.D. Vance met with Alice Weidel, the leader of Germany’s ‘firewalled’ Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, on Friday. Vance was in the country to attend the annual Munich Security Conference.

 

Their meeting reportedly lasted about half an hour and focused on the Ukraine conflict, German domestic policies, and freedom of speech, including theso-called ‘Brandmauer’, or “firewall against the right.” The term refers to a stance embraced by mainstream German parties that aims to prevent the right-wing powers from joining ruling coalitions in the country.

 

News of the meeting came after Vance slammed European politicians for “fearing” their own voters by refusing to engage with right-wing parties in a speech on Friday. While he did not mention the AfD directly, he saidEuropean governments should drop “firewalls” and “embrace” public opinion or lose the right to be called democratic.(Next country to get a comeuppance is the UK, they are the worst. Germany’s AFD seeks ‘very good relations’ with Russia – co-leader

Germany needs to restore relations with Russia for the sake of the nation’s economic well-being, Alice Weidel, co-leader of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has said. Antagonizing Moscow has brought the country nothing but trouble, she told Bild tabloid in an interview published on Sunday.

 

The AfD wants Germany to have “very good relations with our European neighbors” and with great powers as well, the politician said, addingthat “it includes Russia.”

 

“Until two years ago, we sourced cheap natural gas from Russia through the Nord Stream,”Weidel said, referring to the Russian undersea pipelines delivering natural gas to Germany that were sabotaged via a series of explosions in autumn 2022.

 

Berlin has since taken steps to put an end to Russian energy imports as part of its EU sanctions policy, which is linked to the Ukraine conflict.

 

According to Weidel, the introduction of restrictions was a mistake since it primarily damaged the German economy. “What we want is to put an end to the sanctions policy,” the politician said, claimingher country currently has “the highest energy prices in the world,” which make the nation “no longer competitive.”

When repeatedly pressed by Bild on whether her party wants to restore “good relations” with a nation that supposedly threatens Germany, Weidel replied that Berlin has also been aggressive towards Moscow in its rhetoric over the past years.

 

The German government was climbing up “the escalation spiral,” the politician said, adding that Berlin’s politicians used belligerent rhetoric and provided weapons to Kiev during its conflict against Moscow.

 

“German tanks have been rolling against Russia again” for the first time since World War II, she said, referring to the heavy armor supplied to Ukraine as part of the country’s military assistance.

 

When asked about why she refrains from criticizing Russia’s role in the conflict, Weidel said that Berlin and Moscow should “sit down at the negotiating table” instead. “You have to talk to each other,” she stated, adding thather party was calling on Germany to join the peace negotiations to end the Ukraine conflict. That would be the “only serious policy,” she added.

 

The AfD has been gaining popular support over the past months despite being ostracizedby the other major German political forces, which accuse it of being “far-right.” The party enjoys the backing of between 20% and 21% of the population a week ahead of the snap parliamentary elections, and is projected to come in second behind only the conservative Christian Democratic Union, this week’s polls suggest.

White House Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff has confirmed there will be talks on ending the Ukraine conflict in Saudi Arabia.He will be heading to the kingdom on Sunday alongside US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. (That’s today)

 

“I’m leaving tonight,” Witkoff stated in an interview with Fox News. “We’re hopeful that we’ll achieve significant progress,” he added. Witkoff did not disclose whom they would be meeting with or the topics of discussion.

 

Senior US officials are scheduled to meet with their Russian counterparts in the Saudi capital, Riyadh,next week to initiate discussions on ending the Ukraine conflict, the Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing an unnamed US official.

 

The upcoming talks in Saudi Arabia will be among the first high-level, in-person discussions between Russian and US officials in years, serving as a precursor to a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump.

 

The two presidents spoke by phone on Wednesday, marking their first known direct conversation since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict inFebruary 2022. (They will be stopping the war almost exactly three years after it started).

 

On Saturday, the countries’ top diplomats followed up with a call to discuss “preparations for a potential high-level Russian-American summit.” In its article on Saturday, Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, said that theUS delegation has presumably been tasked with securing a date for the meeting before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which starts this year on February 28.

 

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky stated earlier that Kiev had not been invited to the negotiations in Saudi Arabia. (Yicai Global) April 29 – Ford China yesterday named He Xiaoqing as head of its passenger car joint venture in China, with full responsibility for operations. He will be Changan Ford Automobile’s first Chinese president in a decade.

 

The new chief’s goal will be to deepen the partnership between the JV’s major shareholders and restore Changan Ford’s place among leading JVs, the statement said. He will also push to make the JV play a key role in advancing Ford China’s passenger vehicle strategy.

 

He previously served as vice president of Ford China’s Enterprise Alliances. Prior to joining Ford China, he held senior positions at several Chinese automakers, including vice president of Chery Automobile and Nanjing Automotive Group.

 

Ford China’s auto business in the country will focus on Ford passenger and commercial vehicles, Lincoln cars as well as electric autos, the firm added.

 

Changan Ford is a 50-50 venture of Ford Motor and China Chang’an Automobile Group, with plants in the cities of Chongqing, Hangzhou and Harbin. Chongqing is Ford’s biggest production base outside of Detroit.

 

Changan Ford’s sales and profits have fallen since 2016. But the situation began to improve in the second half of last year. Sales rose 16 percent to 213,700 in 2020, while first-quarter sales this year jumped nearly 50 percent from a year ago to 49,300.

U.N. Has Flown More Than $2.9 Billion in Cash to Afghanistan Since the Taliban Seized Power, Diverting U.S. Funds

 

The U.S. State Department has previously said that no U.S. funds went to the militant group, but a new federal report indicates that some taxpayer money has ended up in the Taliban-controlled central bank of Afghanistan.

 

The United Nations has delivered more than $2.9 billion in cash to Afghanistan since the Taliban seized control, resulting in the flow of U.S. funds to the extremist group, according to a recent government report.

 

The U.N. deposits the cash into a private Afghan bank and disburses funds to the agency’s aid organizations and nonprofit humanitarian groups. But the money does not stop there, the report found. Some winds up at the central bank of Afghanistan, which is under the control of the Taliban. The group took over the country after the withdrawal of U.S. forces in August 2021.

 

The report, from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, provides the first detailed account of how U.S. cash falls under the control of the Taliban and adds to a growing body of evidence that contributions to the U.N. are not always reaching Afghans in need. It did not specify how much U.S. funding has been channeled to the central bank.

 

“Most of the money that’s going in cash through the U.N. is ultimately coming from U.S. taxpayers,” John Sopko, the inspector general, said in an interview. “It’s going to a terrorist group. The Taliban are a bunch of terrorists.”

 

U.N. officials do not deny that the cash delivered to Afghanistan makes its way to the central bank. But they say there is no avoiding it since the Taliban control the country.

 

In a briefing to the U.N. Security Council on March 6, Roza Otunbayeva, the U.N.’s special representative for Afghanistan, did not mention the Afghan central bank. The cash shipments, she said, have helped stabilize the economy and deliver desperately needed medical care and food to Afghans. The shipments have “injected liquidity to the local economy that has in large part allowed the private sector to continue to function and averted a fiscal crisis,” Otunbayeva told council members.

 

In a letter provided in response to the inspector general’s report, the State Department said the U.N. was responsible for managing the cash transfer program.

 

“We remain committed to providing critical, life-saving humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people. We will continue to monitor assistance programs and seek to mitigate the risk that U.S. assistance could indirectly benefit the Taliban or could be diverted to unintended recipients,” the letter said.

 

Lawmakers say the U.S. must do more to prevent the flow of money to the group.

 

“This is unacceptable,” said Rep. Michael McCaul, the Texas Republican who chairs the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, in a statement. “The U.S. government must work harder to prevent the Taliban from benefiting from humanitarian aid.”

 

A spokesperson for the Afghan central bank did not return requests for comment.

 

Since the Taliban takeover, Afghanistan has suffered numerous humanitarian crises, with half its 40 million people in need of food, water and other basic necessities. Earthquakes last year killed more than 1,200 people and left thousands displaced. Women’s rights have been severely curtailed.

 

The U.S. remains the largest donor of aid to Afghanistan, providing a total of about $2.6 billion since the collapse of the previous Afghan government. But fears over money ending up in the wrong hands have complicated aid delivery. For instance, U.S. officials have blocked the central bank from receiving money from a trust fund holding Afghan funds that could be used to benefit the country.

 

“We could not be more clear on this: The United States does not provide funding to the Taliban,” said Matthew Miller, a State Department spokesperson, at a briefing last year.

 

The inspector general report calls that assertion into question. The State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development have continued to provide money to the U.N. to assist ongoing humanitarian efforts. The U.N., in turn, has said it must send cash to Afghanistan because of the lack of an infrastructure to wire money.

 

After getting the money from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the U.N. flies shrink-wrapped $100 bills to the Kabul International Airport. The money arrives on a regular basis, as much as $40 million at a time, according to posts from the Afghan central bank on X, formerly known as Twitter.

 

Once aid organizations receive the U.S. dollars, they must convert the money into afghanis, the country’s currency, to pay for workers and other expenses. They often use private money exchanges, which use the dollars to purchase afghanis from the central bank, known as the Da Afghanistan Bank.

 

Senior leaders of the Taliban control the central bank, which has no systems in place to prevent terrorism financing or money laundering, according to the inspector general’s report, which cites an analysis paid for by USAID. Officials at the development agency declined to release the study, describing it as a “confidential internal document.”

 

When money leaves the central bank, there’s yet another concern. Humanitarian organizations are sometimes forced to pay cash directly to the Taliban. Local Taliban leaders have demanded that the U.N. and aid groups hire its members and their relatives or prioritize treatment of widows and wounded militants, according to the inspector general.

 

“Aid diversion does happen, and when it does, humanitarian work has to halt and solutions need to be found,” said one U.N. official who was not authorized to make public comment. “There are cases where the Taliban seek to take control of distribution according to their priorities, or other cases where aid work is stopped altogether. In other areas we see very positive support and openness.”

 

The risk of the diversion of foreign aid in wartorn countries has long bedeviled the U.S. and other countries. The only way to stop it would be to halt the flow of money — which humanitarian groups have said could lead to disastrous consequences such as starvation or the collapse of local economies.

 

In many ways, the U.S. is responsible for the problems it now faces. The distribution of funds to help the vulnerable was a repeated issue during two decades of war in Afghanistan and Iraq. American officials flew more than $12 billion in cash — that’s 363 tons — to Iraq in the early days of the war, according to congressional investigators, making it nearly impossible to determine the final beneficiaries.

 

But the U.S. and its international allies failed to ever fully implement systems to improve transparency, such as wire transfers or electronic payments, in Afghanistan, despite repeated pleas for such technology by watchdog organizations.

 

Sopko, the inspector general, said the U.S., the U.N. and multilateral agencies could install better controls over the delivery of cash in Afghanistan, but he acknowledged the inherent difficulty of the task.

 

“If nobody’s paying attention, then you’re going to have waste, fraud and abuse, big time,” he said.

Argentina’s opposition lawmakers have threatened to initiate impeachmentproceedings against President Javier Milei after he promoted a controversial cryptocurrency, Reuters reported on Sunday. The head of state had touted the token, which crashed soon after.

 

On Friday, the libertarian president recommended the LIBRA crypto coin in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The token’s price shot up to nearly $5 soon after the endorsement, but plummeted to under $1 only hours later. Milei deleted his initial post five hours later and wrote a new one, saying he was “not aware of the details of the project.”

 

The controversy has fueled accusations of misconduct from the country’s opposition lawmakers.Leandro Santoro(dig needed), a member of the opposition coalition, blasted Milei’s involvement, saying that his endorsement of the crypto, which has been linked to possible scams, was an abuse of public trust.

 

“This scandal, whichembarrasses uson an international scale, requires us to launch an impeachment request against the president,”Santoro said, as cited by Reuters.

The news agency noted that the token’s name could apparently refer to Milei’s political party, La Libertad Avanza, or his libertarian roots as an economist.

 

Meanwhile, the company disavowed the launchof the LIBRA token as well, saying in a post on X that “market making was fully handled by KelsierVentures” and emphasizing that KIP Protocol “did not profit a single cent from today’s activity.”

Not since Dorothy tossed her bucket of water on the Wicked Witch has shrinkage triggered such drama.

 

Democrats' rhetoric has grown more extreme as Trump and his chief efficiency officer Elon Musk have cut deeper. Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., declared, for example: "Every time you hear DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency, you just remember it is the department of government evil."

 

Evil, of course, is a matter of perspective.

 

Americans say Trump is keeping his promises

The coordinated efforts of Democratic leaders and the mainstream media have once again not resonated with the public. Trump, according to polls, is now at higher popularity levels than during his first term. And a strong majority of Americans say Trump is keeping his promises, including in his efforts to reduce government spending and waste.

Those efforts include a generous buyout offer for federal employees. The Trump administration offered federal workers the chance to stay home for months while receiving full pay if they would agree to resign from government employment.

 

It was an extremely clever move. The best way to shrink the government is to get people to leave voluntarily. But Trump and Musk also have warned that layoffs will follow if not enough federal workers accepted the buyout.

It is a type of self-deportation from government service. And it worked, with about 75,000 federal workers accepting Trump's offer before the deal ended Wednesday.

 

It worked so well, in fact, that Democrats rushed to stop the voluntary exodus by falsely suggesting that it was a scam. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., warned employees that Trump would “stiff you," even though the offer comes with the authority of the federal government.

 

U.S. District Court Judge George O’Toole on Wednesday lifted his injunction on the buyout program, agreeing that Trump has the authority to offer the buyouts.

 

Unions representing federal workers and liberal legal organizations are likely to now appeal O'Toole's decision. The unions, which are facing a major reduction in dues-paying members, have a disturbing conflict of interest in trying to deny federal workers the benefits of an offer they chose to accept.

 

The legal challenges to the buyout have relied on a plethora of arguments asserting that a president cannot allow employees to stay home and receive pay pending their departure from federal employment. Those arguments cited the Antideficiency Act, which bars agencies from spending beyond the money appropriated by Congress.

President has the authority to manage the executive branch

The counterargument is that money used for the buyouts was allocated to pay employees whose service normally continues year after year. Under Article II of the Constitution, the president is given ample discretion in running the executive branch, including the work status of federal employees.

 

Congress clearly has a role in controlling use of the federal purse. For example, Congress can determine whether to allocate money to build certain Navy vessels. However, once the ships are built, it is the president who decides where to send them and who will serve on the crew. The commander in chief also can expand or shrink the size of the crew.

 

Trump was well within his authority in offering to change employees' duties while they look for new positions, and the employees had every right to agree to eight months of paid leave in exchange for their resignation from government service.

The opposition from Democrats and labor unions is the ultimate form of paternalism. In the name of protecting employees, opponents fought to prevent workers from accepting offers they believe are best for themselves and their families.

 

Federal employees are entitled to protections in their employment. But they're not entitled to permanent employment. Congress is entitled to appropriate money for specific purposes. But it is not entitled to manage the executive branch.

 

Trump is very willing to fight on this hill. He holds a strong constitutional position and an even stronger political position.

 

For those who proclaimed themselves as defenders of democracy throughout last year's election cycle, this is what democracy looks like. Voters made clear that they want changes in the size and the focus of government.

 

Those voters are unlikely to be convinced by the warning of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., that Musk is “taking away everything we have.”

 

That is precisely what Americans asked for in reelecting Donald Trump.

The former aide to Joe Biden has called into question the sacrifices required by the Ukrainian leader to keep fighting Russia

 

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky is far from being in a winning position at the moment, RT contributor Tara Reade has said. The former aide to Joe Biden specified that Washington is no longer fighting a proxy war against Russia via Kiev, making the Ukrainian leader useless to both the EU and the US.

 

The comment comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with his US counterpart Donald Trump on Wednesday, the first known contact between the heads of state of the two nations since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

 

“Zelensky is probably trying to figure out an exit route, among other things,” Reade said, adding that running for president again was not an option for the former comedian. “I think he wouldn’t be elected, obviously.”

 

The Ukrainian leader’s presidential term expired in May 2024, but he has refused to hold elections, citing martial law. Trump has also acknowledged that Kiev will eventually have to hold elections and noted that Zelensky might not serve another term, saying his domestic poll numbers “aren’t particularly great, to put it mildly.”

 

“He’s basically sacrificed a generation of men for what? To give rare earth minerals to the US? To give 22% of the lands to Russia?” Reade said, emphasizing that Zelensky was “in a very bad position.”

 

The comment refers to recent statements made by Trump, who demanded the “equivalent of $500 billion worth of rare earths” from Kiev in exchange for what the president estimated to be “more than $300 billion” Washington had provided in aid since the escalation of the conflict with Moscow.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent presented Trump’s proposal to Zelensky during their meeting in Kiev earlier this week. According to multiple media reports, the deal outlines that Washington would receive a 50% stake in Ukraine’s rare earth minerals as compensation for the American aid. On Saturday, the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the negotiations, that Ukraine had rejected the bid, citing the lack of security guarantees.

 

According to Ukraine’s Institute of Geology, the country’s deposits include lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, erbium and yttrium. However, Zelensky recently admitted that a large chunk of Ukraine’s mineral-rich territories, some 20%, is currently under Russian control.

 

NBC reported on Saturday, citing unnamed officials, that the White House could send troops to guard Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. The deployment of military forces could reportedly come after Russia and Ukraine reached a deal to end the ongoing conflict.

 

Reade said the reported troop deployment is unlikely. “There’s a will for there to be a different relationship with Russia.” She highlighted that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had said definitively “that there would be no US troops in Ukraine” and “US involvement in providing money and weapons was going to end.”

Shares of Lockheed Martin plunged after the US president said he may halve military spending

 

US defense stocks took a sharp dive this week after President Donald Trump announced that he could slash military spending in half. The announcement came amid a wider cost-saving push by his administration.

 

Companies which saw share prices fall this week include aerospace manufacturers Lockheed Martin (-4.86%) and Northrop Grumman (-6.58%) as well as General Dynamics (-5.30%), according to Friday’s trading data.

 

Speaking at a White House press conference on Thursday, Trump said he planned to discuss a potential reduction in defense budgets with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

 

“At some point, when things settle down, I’m going to meet with China and I’m going to meet with Russia… and I’m going to say there’s no reason for us to be spending almost $1 trillion on the military… and I want to say let’s cut our military budget in half,” Trump said.

 

Defense firms have enjoyed increased demand for weapons and military equipment since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. Lockheed Martin, the primary producer of the F-16 fighter jets and Patriot missile systems used in Ukraine, posted a 21% year-on-year increase in revenues in 2023.

 

The new US administration has so far sent mixed messages on military spending. Trump has tasked Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency with cutting federal costs, including at the Pentagon. The president has also pushed for a quick resolution of the Ukraine conflict, announcing imminent talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

 

The current $1 trillion in annual US military spending accounts for about 3.4% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said during his confirmation hearings at the US Senate in January that he wouldn’t want to spend less than 3% of GDP on defense.

 

Russia has criticized the US arms sector for fueling global instability. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed in September that soaring profits prompt defense firms to provoke new armed conflicts.

 

Meanwhile, claims have resurfaced in recent months about NATO weapons and ammunition being put on sale on the dark web. Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson alleged earlier this month that the Ukrainian military was selling American weapons systems on the black market, including to drug cartels.

 

In January 2024, a US Department of Defense Office of Inspector General report revealed that the Pentagon was unable to fully account for over $1 billion worth of military aid to Kiev. In 2023, CNN reported that criminals and arms traffickers in Ukraine had stolen some Western-provided weapons and equipment intended for troops.

Newsom Indicates He Will Veto Bill Blocking State Prisons From Working With ICE

 

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has indicated he will veto a bill that seeks to prevent the California state prison system from working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if the bill passes the Legislature.

 

If passed, Assembly Bill 15 (AB 15), introduced by Assembly Member Mike Gipson (D-District 65) who represents parts of south-central Los Angeles, would prevent the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) from cooperating with ICE.

 

The CDCR would be prohibited from holding someone in custody at the request of ICE, sharing an individual’s release date with ICE, responding to ICE requests for information, or transferring individuals to ICE custody.

 

“The Governor has twice vetoed versions of this bill before,” Newsom’s office said in a statement emailed to The Epoch Times.

 

California law currently allows CDCR to notify and coordinate with ICE to take custody of illegal immigrants who have come to the end of their state prison term for felony offenses.

 

The governor’s office shared statistics that the state prison system has notified and coordinated with ICE the transfer of 10,588 state inmates, including illegal aliens who have committed serious crimes. Those crimes include assault and battery, threats, rape, theft, fraud, felony DUI, drug crimes and more.

 

Newsom has previously vetoed Assembly Bill 1306 in 2023 and another version, Assembly Bill 1282, in 2019.

 

“His position has been long-held since he was mayor of San Francisco,” the governor’s office stated.

 

AB 1306 would have prohibited the CDCR from detaining inmates on the basis of a hold request, sharing with ICE release date information, responding to a notification request, transferring to ICE, or facilitating a transfer request for any individual eligible for release, including but not limited to youth offenders, elderly, and medical parole releases.

 

“The bill would prevent information sharing and coordination upon a person’s release from CDCR custody for a significant number of people and, as a result, would impede CDCR’s interaction with a federal law enforcement agency charged with assessing public safety risks,” Newsom stated at the time of his veto.

 

“I believe current law strikes the right balance on limiting interaction to support community trust and cooperation between law enforcement and local communities.”

 

Newsom did say that his administration recognizes the need for improvements.

 

“CDCR will limit how it communicates with ICE as a federal law enforcement agency, so information is only provided to ICE when a noncitizen individual enters prison and is approaching their release date,” Newsom wrote in the 2023 veto. "ICE would then determine how it proceeds with its enforcement of federal law.”
