Amazon forest felled to build road for climate summit

A new four-lane highway cutting through tens of thousands of acres of protected Amazon rainforest is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém.

 

It aims to ease traffic to the city, which will host more than 50,000 people - including world leaders - at the conference in November.

 

The state government touts the highway's "sustainable" credentials, but some locals and conservationists are outraged at the environmental impact.

 

The Amazon plays a vital role in absorbing carbon for the world and providing biodiversity, and many say this deforestation contradicts the very purpose of a climate summit.

Along the partially built road, lush rainforest towers on either side - a reminder of what was once there. Logs are piled high in the cleared land which stretches more than 13km (8 miles) through the rainforest into Belém.

 

Diggers and machines carve through the forest floor, paving over wetland to surface the road which will cut through a protected area.

 

Claudio Verequete lives about 200m from where the road will be. He used to make an income from harvesting açaí berries from trees that once occupied the space.

 

"Everything was destroyed," he says, gesturing at the clearing.

 

"Our harvest has already been cut down. We no longer have that income to support our family."

 

He says he has received no compensation from the state government and is currently relying on savings.

 

He worries the construction of this road will lead to more deforestation in the future, now that the area is more accessible for businesses.

 

"Our fear is that one day someone will come here and say: 'Here's some money. We need this area to build a gas station, or to build a warehouse.' And then we'll have to leave.

 

"We were born and raised here in the community. Where are we going to go?"

His community won't be connected to the road, given its walls on either side.

 

"For us who live on the side of the highway, there will be no benefits. There will be benefits for the trucks that will pass through. If someone gets sick, and needs to go to the centre of Belém, we won't be able to use it."

 

The road leaves two disconnected areas of protected forest. Scientists are concerned it will fragment the ecosystem and disrupt the movement of wildlife.

 

Prof Silvia Sardinha is a wildlife vet and researcher at a university animal hospital that overlooks the site of the new highway.

 

She and her team rehabilitate wild animals with injuries, predominantly caused by humans or vehicles.

 

Once healed, they release them back into the wild – something she says will be harder if there is a highway on their doorstep.

 

"From the moment of deforestation, there is a loss.

 

"We are going to lose an area to release these animals back into the wild, the natural environment of these species," she said.

 

"Land animals will no longer be able to cross to the other side too, reducing the areas where they can live and breed."

 

The Brazilian president and environment minister say this will be a historic summit because it is "a COP in the Amazon, not a COP about the Amazon".

 

The president says the meeting will provide an opportunity to focus on the needs of the Amazon, show the forest to the world, and present what the federal government has done to protect it.

 

But Prof Sardinha says that while these conversations will happen "at a very high level, among business people and government officials", those living in the Amazon are "not being heard"…

REPORT: Mahmoud Khalil had security clearance from British Government

 

The UK program with which Khalil was affiliated is a "flagship UK soft power policy."

The Middle East Eye has revealed on Wednesday that Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University masters grad who was detained by the Department of Homeland Security on Saturday night after his green car was revoked by the State Department, had security clearance from the British government. He worked, the outlet states, as a "programme manager at the Syria Office in the British embassy in Beirut from 2018 to 2022."

 

Khalil "worked as a local manager for the Syria Chevening Program, a prestigious UK government international scholarship scheme, as well as for the Conflict, Stability, and Security Fund," MEE states. Khalil came to the US in 2023, obtained a green card, and completed graduate studies at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs in December 2024.

 

British diplomats had kind words for Khalil. Former diplomat Andrew Waller said that to gain his position in the UK's embassy in Beirut, he "went through a vetting process to get the job and was cleared to work on sensitive issues for the British government." Waller said that the UK program with which Khalil was affiliated is a "flagship UK soft power policy."

 

"It brings the brightest students from around the world to UK universities. Mahmoud ran its Syria programme and interviewed hundreds, if not thousands, of applicants on behalf of the British government," Waller said. Khalil also served as a "local staff political officer" and a translator both for language and context in meetings. Waller had nothing but kind words for Khalil, per MEE.

 

That vetting process held no weight with the Trump administration, which, acting on Trump's order to quell antisemitic protests on campus, has set about revoking visas and green cards of student activists who engaged in the chaos on college campuses in the wake of the Oct. 7 massacre.

 

Student activists on college campuses took up the side of the Hamas terrorists who perpetrated the pogrom which killed 1,200 people and kidnapped over 200, more than 50 of whom are still being held by terrorists in Gaza. It is believed that many of those Hamas is holding hostage are dead.

 

The Chevening scholarship, MEE reports, is a program of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and aims to "support UK foreign policy priorities and achieve FCDO objectives by creating lasting positive relationships with future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers."

 

Khalil was a leader and spokesperson for the violent demonstrations and occupations that took place on Columbia's campus. Students and activists occupied the quad, administration buildings, and as recently as January, disrupted classes to distribute anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian pamphlets. Last week, a Barnard College library was occupied and the NYPD was called in to clear the building.

 

Trump has called Khalil's detainment a "blueprint" for the removal of other students in the US on visas or green cards.

According to an old myth, General Washington met light resistance at the Battle of Trenton on the morning of December 26, 1776, because the town's Hessian defenders had been up late the night before celebrating Christmas. The story explains that the Patriots made quick work of the bumbling mercenaries besotted with holiday cheer. But the Hessian troops were hardly the hapless drunks of legend. Rather, they were generally excellent soldiers.

 

The term "Hessians" refers to the approximately 30,000 German troops hired by the British to help fight during the American Revolution. They were principally drawn from the German state of Hesse-Cassel, although soldiers from other German states also saw action in America. (At the time, Germany was not a unified country but a collection of individual states that shared a language and culture.)

 

Hiring a foreign army was not unusual in the eighteenth century. For Hesse-Cassel, soldiers were a major export. By renting its army to the British, Hesse-Cassel took in an amount equal to about thirteen years' worth of tax revenue. This allowed the state's prince, the Landgraf Friedrich II, to keep taxes low and public spending high. A man of the Enlightenment, Friedrich oversaw public works projects, administered a public welfare system, and encouraged education.

 

Even so, military needs dominated the country. When boys turned seven they were registered for military service, and each year men ages sixteen to thirty had to present themselves to an official for possible induction. Some men were exempted because their occupations were considered vital to the state. But others, such as school dropouts, bankrupts, servants without masters, idlers, and the unemployed, were deemed "expendable people" and could be forced into service at any time.

 

Life in the Hessian Army was harsh. The system aimed to instill iron discipline and the punishments could be brutal. Still, morale was generally high. Officers were well-educated, promotion was by merit, and soldiers took pride in serving their prince and their people. Furthermore, military service provided economic benefits. The families of soldiers were exempt from certain taxes, wages were higher than in farm work, and there was the promise of booty (money earned through the sale of captured military property) and plunder (property taken from civilians). The penchant for plunder made the Hessians unpopular with Americans. Any combatants committing crimes against civilians on Russian soil will be treated as terrorists, the president has said

 

Foreign mercenaries fighting for Kiev should be aware that they do not have the same legal protections under international law as regular Ukrainian combatants, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a visit to Kursk Region.

 

Speaking at a meeting with the Russian General Staff and military commanders on Wednesday, the president stated that any Ukrainian soldier or foreign mercenary captured on Russian soil can be “treated as a terrorist under Russian law.”

 

“All people who commit crimes against the civilian population on the territory of the Kursk Region, confront our Armed Forces, law enforcement agencies and special services, are terrorists in accordance with the laws of the Russian Federation,” Putin said. “This is how the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office and the Investigative Committee qualify their actions.”

 

Putin stressed that Russia “treats and will treat all people humanely,” including prisoners of war (POWs), but warned that mercenaries lack the same legal status as regular troops.

 

“I still want to remind you that foreign mercenaries are not protected by the 1949 Geneva Convention on POWs,” the Russian leader said.

 

The border region faced a major incursion by Ukraine in August 2024, and Russian troops have been gradually pushing them back in an operation that has intensified in recent weeks. In liberated areas, Russian investigators have found evidence of Ukrainian troops committing rape, torture, and murder against civilians during the occupation.

 

Foreign mercenaries have also played an active role in Ukraine’s incursions, according to the Russian authorities, who have warned that any troops supporting Kiev will be considered “legitimate targets.”

 

Under the Third Geneva Convention, regular combatants fighting for a recognized party in a conflict are granted protections if captured by the opposing side. POW status guarantees access to shelter, food, medical care, and protection from hostilities, as well as safeguards against violence, intimidation, and degrading treatment. They also cannot be prosecuted simply for taking part in hostilities unless they have committed war crimes.

 

However, Article 47 of Additional Protocol I to the convention explicitly excludes mercenaries from being classified as regular combatants, meaning they are not entitled to POW status.

 

The Russian authorities have consistently prosecuted foreign mercenaries fighting for Kiev. In January, a Russian court sentenced retired US Army Ranger Patrick Creed to 13 years in prison for serving with the Ukrainian from 2022 to 2023. In March, British citizen James Scott Rhys Anderson was sentenced to 19 years behind bars by a Russian court after being convicted of crimes against civilians in Kursk Region.

i now think that i have a hint as to what that is about.

 

There is the Woo Beginnings Conference in Ottawa starting this Friday, March 14, 2025. It seemed reasonable to run through the latest data from two months back to see if there are hints of anything untoward occurring that may have impacted my friends at this meet-up. So data was processed including down into the fourth layer which is where the details emerge by the extensive cross links that are created by this processing layer.

 

There are no signs of anything requiring a warning about that location, during these days. This was good.

 

As long as the data had been prepared and was processing, i decided to look at the larger sets down into the third layer (initial cross links) to see what is headed towards us all out of the event-stream.

 

Some manifestations that may appear are worth noting.

 

There is a very large set about economic activity. This includes finances. These financial sets have a curious story to tell. These sets are forecasting that the DOGE guys, or perhaps, because of their actions more than their discoveries, cause a giant layer of financial information to emerge. This set is around the idea of a ‘MASSIVE FRAUD’ within the Federal Reserve and the Treasury under the democrats these last 20+ years. Note that it was hidden under Trump’s first administration.

 

The MASSIVE FRAUD is about there being somewhere between 100 and 1000 times more dollars created than are on the ‘books’ at either the Treasury or the Federal Reserve Bank which is a private corporation, not part of government, and not a bank, and completely without any reserves.

 

The MASSIVE FRAUD is so massive as to completely destroy all accounting, and all financial ‘systems’, and all the markets based on the Fed Reserve note/dollar. It ends the dollar on its discovery.

Information warfare campaigns designed by the U.S. government to target Americans with the aim of splitting them apart from their countrymen through weaponized falsehoods are rooted in new methods of shaping and controlling the online communities that many Americans trust to interpret the world around them. From Russiagate to COVID-19 to Jan. 6, the newness and force of these campaigns has knocked the country senseless, with the left readily acclimating itself to third-world norms, and large parts of the right increasingly hopeless.

 

What the right has learned from a decade of information warfare targeting it is to distrust the media. Knowing, for instance, that the Justice Department interfered in the 2016, 2020, and now the 2024 elections, what else is phony? Was 9/11 an inside job after all? What about the moon landing? What haven’t we been lied to about? Our families are real, our kids are real. But what else is there to hold on to? It’s like reaching for a life raft and finding only splinters. Maybe America is fake all the way down.

 

But it’s not, and the right can’t afford to let itself be fooled into despair with so much at stake. The same U.S. government agencies and officials that pushed everything from Russiagate to the Russia bounty story and lied about the origins of COVID-19, Hunter Biden’s laptop, and the character of Jan. 6 protests are now warning that Israel’s war against Hamas is likely to drag U.S. forces into WWIII. It’s another information operation designed to disorient and demoralize the America First camp. This time, however, there’s a big difference—an influential segment of the right is amplifying the left’s campaign against them.

 

The left claims that America is a fraud at its origins, a racist hoax perpetrated against nonwhites to this very day. The left tears down monuments, desecrates our heroes, replaces our holidays, and rewrites our history to suit their pathological grievances. It’s a whole-of-party effort to force the middle class to our knees in despair, so that the country’s ruling class and the oligarchs can continue running their high-tech monopolies while defunding police forces and opening the borders to depress wages, impoverish communities, and terrorize families.

 

But now, the right is in danger of transitioning into the left. Maybe it shouldn’t be surprising that amid the ruins, some of those capitalizing on the chaos and preying on the shell-shocked are themselves from the right. A year ago, for example, right-wing influencer Jackson Hinkle sounded like a normal Trump voter. After Biden delivered his infamous Philadelphia speech accusing his political opponents of terrorism, Hinkle called him a dictator, and said he was plunging us into fascism at the behest of George Soros and Klaus Schwab while using the intelligence agencies to target freedom-loving Americans. Most of that is true.

 

Today, however, Hinkle’s Twitter feed looks like nothing more than a Soros-funded operation, pumping out reports every hour enticing clicks via the eternal threat that is antisemitism, and promoting actual America-hating terrorists in the process. Hinkle’s business model?“Subscribe to my X Premium for $3 to help me DEFEAT THE ZIONIST LIES.”
