REPORT: Mahmoud Khalil had security clearance from British Government

 

The Middle East Eye has revealed on Wednesday that Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University masters grad who was detained by the Department of Homeland Security on Saturday night after his green car was revoked by the State Department, had security clearance from the British government. He worked, the outlet states, as a "programme manager at the Syria Office in the British embassy in Beirut from 2018 to 2022."

 

Khalil "worked as a local manager for the Syria Chevening Program, a prestigious UK government international scholarship scheme, as well as for the Conflict, Stability, and Security Fund," MEE states. Khalil came to the US in 2023, obtained a green card, and completed graduate studies at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs in December 2024.

 

British diplomats had kind words for Khalil. Former diplomat Andrew Waller said that to gain his position in the UK's embassy in Beirut, he "went through a vetting process to get the job and was cleared to work on sensitive issues for the British government." Waller said that the UK program with which Khalil was affiliated is a "flagship UK soft power policy."

 

"It brings the brightest students from around the world to UK universities. Mahmoud ran its Syria programme and interviewed hundreds, if not thousands, of applicants on behalf of the British government," Waller said. Khalil also served as a "local staff political officer" and a translator both for language and context in meetings. Waller had nothing but kind words for Khalil, per MEE.

 

That vetting process held no weight with the Trump administration, which, acting on Trump's order to quell antisemitic protests on campus, has set about revoking visas and green cards of student activists who engaged in the chaos on college campuses in the wake of the Oct. 7 massacre.

 

Student activists on college campuses took up the side of the Hamas terrorists who perpetrated the pogrom which killed 1,200 people and kidnapped over 200, more than 50 of whom are still being held by terrorists in Gaza. It is believed that many of those Hamas is holding hostage are dead.

 

The Chevening scholarship, MEE reports, is a program of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and aims to "support UK foreign policy priorities and achieve FCDO objectives by creating lasting positive relationships with future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers."

 

Khalil was a leader and spokesperson for the violent demonstrations and occupations that took place on Columbia's campus. Students and activists occupied the quad, administration buildings, and as recently as January, disrupted classes to distribute anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian pamphlets. Last week, a Barnard College library was occupied and the NYPD was called in to clear the building.

 

Trump has called Khalil's detainment a "blueprint" for the removal of other students in the US on visas or green cards.

Chuck Schumer Caves on Republican Spending Bill, Will Vote for Cloture

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) caved on supporting a Republican spending bill that would keep the government from shutting down, and will be voting for cloture, according to a recent report.

 

Jake Sherman, the founder of Punchbowl News, wrote in a post that “Schumer will vote for cloture,” and that he “needs 6 more Dems to follow him.”

 

Sherman also noted that Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) “said he will already.”

 

According to the website for the United States Senate, the Senate adopted cloture in 1917, “a rule to allow a two-thirds majority to end a filibuster, a procedure known as ‘cloture.'” …

New York State Attorney General Letitia James and a coalition of twenty other Democrat state attorneys general (and the District of Columbia AG) filed suit on Thursday against the Trump administration to stop the reduction in force (RIF) layoffs of just under half the department’s over 4,000 workers that was announced on Tuesday by Secretary Linda McMahon.

After Jiménez's death, his family and friends completed the sculpture, which was then installed at Denver International Airport.

The Denver International Airport commissioned the artwork from Jiménez in 1992 for $300,000 as part of the airport's public art plan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he didn’t support an immediate cease-fire in Ukraine, calling for more discussion on a permanent end to the war as Moscow’s army made rapid gains toward expelling Kyiv’s forces from its Kursk region.

 

Putin said any pause in fighting at this point would be in Ukraine’s interest because Russia is gaining on the battlefield, and a host of issues would need to be resolved before a cease-fire could be reached.

Putin said any pause in fighting at this point would be in Ukraine’s interest because Russia is gaining on the battlefield, and a host of issues would need to be resolved before a cease-fire could be reached.

 

“The idea itself is good, and we of course support it, but there are questions we have to discuss,” Putin said, referring to a proposed 30-day cease-fire in the war, adding that Russia sought a lasting peace that would need to eliminate the “root causes” of the conflict.

 

The comments were the first official response from Moscow after Ukraine agreed this week to a U.S.-backed proposal for a pause in the war, now in its fourth year. Putin spoke as President Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, was due in Moscow to discuss the cease-fire proposal, according to two U.S. officials.

 

Trump said Thursday that he planned to speak with Putin soon and he was pressing for a speedy end to the conflict.

 

“He put out a very promising statement, but it wasn’t complete,” Trump said of Putin’s comments.

 

“I’d love to meet with him and talk to him, but we have to get it over with fast,” Trump said, sitting next to NATO secretary-general Mark Rutte. Asked about the continuing talks with Russia, Trump said they were “very serious” and added, “Hopefully they’ll do the right thing.”

 

The cease-fire offer, negotiated by the U.S. and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia this week, put pressure on the Russian president to signal a willingness to work toward peace. On Thursday, Putin thanked Trump for bringing attention to the cease-fire in Ukraine, but he also raised a litany of complex issues that he said needed to be resolved before the fighting could end.

 

Putin said it wasn’t clear how such a cease-fire would be enforced and whether it would give Ukraine the chance to shore up its forces. “Who will give orders to stop fighting? What is the price of those orders? Who will determine where and by whom they were violated?” he said, adding that he intended to discuss such questions with Trump.

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Putin’s response “highly predictable” and “manipulative words” aimed at dragging out the process by setting unworkable preconditions.

 

“Of course, Putin is afraid to tell President Trump directly that he wants to continue this war and keep killing Ukrainians,” Zelensky said in his nightly video address. “Putin does this often—he doesn’t say ‘no’ outright, but he drags things out and makes reasonable solutions impossible.”

 

Russia in the past has repeatedly ruled out a temporary cease-fire, and insisted that a lasting agreement to halt fighting would take time to negotiate.

 

Many of the “root causes” of the war cited by Putin were set out in a draft treaty drawn up by Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in April 2022, weeks after Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.

 

Russia justified its invasion that year as a defense against North Atlantic Treaty Organization expansion, and that document envisions a postwar Ukraine that is a disarmed and permanently neutral state unaligned with any military blocs.

 

Moscow insists on keeping at least the 18% of Ukrainian territory it already controls, an area equivalent to Virginia in size. It wants to reverse policies that have sidelined Russian cultural influence in Ukraine and preclude the country’s membership in NATO.

 

With its army advancing on the battlefield and retaking territory Ukraine had hoped to use as a bargaining chip, Russia has little incentive to stop the fighting.

 

“Putin doesn’t feel any pressure,” said Konstantin Sonin, a Russia expert who teaches at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy. “Trump has no leverage over him, and he thinks he’s winning.”

 

Russia’s military said Thursday that it had retaken Sudzha, the biggest town held by Ukraine in the Kursk region, after recapturing a string of villages in recent days. Ukraine didn’t respond to a request for comment. Kyiv has been using Sudzha as a logistical hub to resupply troops in the area.

President Donald Trump has directed the US military to develop plans to “secure” the Panama Canal from alleged Chinese influence, following multiple threats to “reclaim” and “take back” the waterway, according to sources cited by Reuters, CNN and NBC.

 

The Panama Canal, a vital maritime route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, has been under Panamanian control since 1999 following the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, which stipulated that it would remain neutral and open to all nations. Trump has repeatedly threatened to take back control of the waterway, citing “ridiculous fees” and concerns over China’s increasing presence in the region.

 

Earlier this year, Trump refused to rule out the use of military force to take control of the canal, stating that all options were on the table to protect US economic and national security interests.

 

In an Interim National Defense Strategic Guidance memo obtained by CNN on Thursday, the White House formally asked the Pentagon to “immediately” provide options to ensure unlimited US access to the canal.

 

“Provide credible military options to ensure fair and unfettered US military and commercial access to the Panama Canal,” one of the directives in the memo reportedly stated.

 

US Southern Command is already developing potential plans, ranging from “partnering” closely with Panamanian security forces to a scenario in which US troops seize the canal by force, unnamed officials told NBC. Sources cited by Reuters also said the Pentagon had been ordered to explore military options to secure US access to the waterway.

 

Panamanian officials previously firmly rejected Trump’s assertions and threats, while the Panama Canal Authority maintains that the canal is operated solely by Panamanians, with no evidence supporting claims of Chinese control.

 

President Jose Raul Mulino stated that the canal is part of Panama’s “inalienable patrimony” and emphasized that Panama maintains full control of its operations. However, after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio personally delivered Trump’s ultimatum to Panama in February, Mulino made a concession to Washington by refusing to renew the country’s 2017 agreements with China under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.

New York Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday led a coalition of 20 other state attorneys general in suing the Trump administration over its decision to fire more than 1,300 Education Department employees.

The department began firing employees on Tuesday as part of the Trump administration's massive restructuring and reorganization of the federal workforce. Thousands of other federal employees have been laid off in other departments of the government.

James filed the suit in a federal court in Massachusetts, where she claimed the terminations were “illegal and unconstitutional.”

“Firing half of the Department of Education’s work force will hurt students throughout New York and the nation, especially low-income students and those with disabilities who rely on federal funding,” James said in a news release. “This outrageous effort to leave students behind and deprive them of a quality education is reckless and illegal.”

The attorneys general also claimed that the firings will impact “nearly every aspect” of the K-12 education in their states, per the New York Times.

The White House pushed back on the characterization, stating that the president's actions have been legal and fulfill a promise he made to the American people when he was elected, the outlet reported. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said the layoffs will not affect student loans or federal funding for disabled students.

The suit also consisted of attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, Wisconsin, Vermont and the District of Columbia.

US to send upgraded long-range bombs to Ukraine – Reuters

The previous GLSDB variant proved ineffective against Russian electronic warfare

 

The United States has upgraded the Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB) to counter Russian jamming and is set to “reintroduce” them onto the battlefield in Ukraine within days, according to a Reuters report.

 

The GLSDB, jointly developed by Boeing and SAAB AB, combines the GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb with the M26 rocket motor, creating a weapon with a range of approximately 100 miles (161 kilometers).

 

The administration of former President Joe Biden sent an undisclosed number of GLSDB units to Kiev, but it has been “months” since Ukrainian forces last used the bomb against Russia after it proved ineffective last year, sources told Reuters.

 

Russia’s electronic warfare capabilities rendered precision-guided Western munitions – including GLSDB and GPS-guided Excalibur artillery shells – ”useless,” the Wall Street Journal reported in July. With their guidance systems scrambled, some of these weapons were reportedly retired within weeks of being deployed.

 

Since then, Boeing has introduced several upgrades, including reinforced internal connections to enhance resistance to jamming. According to Reuters sources, at least 19 GLSDBs were test-fired in “recent weeks” to assess the effectiveness of the modifications. The US has stockpiled a significant number of these relatively inexpensive bombs in Europe and is “poised” to resume shipments to Kiev within days, the publication reported.

 

The potential replacement comes amid reports that Ukraine has depleted its stockpile of US-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), which have a longer range of 300 km.

 

Kiev began using ATACMS missiles for strikes into internationally recognized Russian territory in the autumn of 2024, particularly targeting the border regions of Kursk, Bryansk, Belgorod, and Rostov. However, the stockpile was fully exhausted by late January, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

 

Moscow has repeatedly warned the US and its allies against permitting long-range Ukrainian strikes, arguing that such attacks would make NATO a direct participant in the conflict due to Kiev’s reliance on Western-supplied weapons.

 

In response to Ukraine’s first ATACMS strikes in November last year, Russia launched its new hypersonic Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile at the Yuzhmash military-industrial facility in the Ukrainian city of Dnepr.

Brown has been charged with six felonies including traveling to commit burglary outside of a county residence, burglarizing a dwelling, two counts of possession of a stolen ID, and home solicitation without a permit.

A trans-identified Florida resident with an extensive criminal history who allegedly works for a Democratic congressional campaign has been arrested for allegedly stealing a child's bicycle. Arlecia Darnae Brown, 39, of Orlando, was taken into custody on March 7 in Palm Coast. Brown faces a variety of felony charges and has been booked into the Flagler County Jail on $67,500 bail.

 

 

Brown, who identifies as a man, has been accused of stealing a child's bicycle out of an open garage on March 6 in a Palm Coast neighborhood. Authorities responded to reports of a suspicious person in the yard of a vacant home the following day in the same neighborhood. Deputies with the Flagler County Sheriff's Office located Brown on the property, who was found distributing campaign fliers for Florida congressional candidate Josh Weil, a progressive Democrat. In a press release, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said that a mother reported the stolen bike to police after her child had left it in their open garage and when the child returned to grab it, it was gone.

 

Authorities located the stolen bike behind a tool shed at the vacant home and took Brown into custody, Fox 35 reported. Brown has been charged with six felonies including traveling to commit burglary outside of a county residence, burglarizing a dwelling, possession of burglary tools with intent to commit a burglary, two counts of possession of a stolen ID, and home solicitation without a permit. Brown also faces one misdemeanor charge of petit property theft, according to jail records.

Brown has a significant criminal record, as evidenced by Brown's convictions for aggravated assault, robbery with a firearm, and firearm possession as a convicted felon, according to investigators.

 

It's unclear if Brown is employed by Weil's campaign or had been distributing the fliers on Brown's own accord. Weil is currently campaigning on putting "the brakes on the Trump administration."

 

Rick Staly, the Sheriff of Flagler County, attributed the arrest to the community's cooperation and the expeditious investigative work.

 

"This is a perfect example of a crime of opportunity," said Sheriff Staly. "I encourage all residents to stay vigilant, lock their doors, and report suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately."

Libby also commented on the lawsuit in reply over X to Alleigh Marré, the founder of American Parents Coalition, reiterating that she, her constituents, and the Maine girls she is speaking up for "will not be silenced."

Doesn’t it seem wrong that it is legal to pay people to protest and to be able to do so anonymously, even if the funding is from enemies of the state?

 

Protests can materially affect public opinion and politics. Reports about protests are used by the media to advance agendas, and they are often fake. That is, the protestors often don’t believe what they are saying or know very little about what they are marching about.

 

Why shouldn’t protesters be required to disclose if they are paid and by whom? Political advertisements require disclosures about who paid for them. Why are protests and protestors not held to this same standard?

WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Breitbart News exclusively on Thursday that President Donald Trump’s administration is employing an “all hands on deck” whole-of-government approach to undoing the damage to the economy that Democrats like former President Joe Biden left behind.

 

Bessent sat with Breitbart News for a more-than-half-hour-long exclusive on-camera interview in the Salmon Chase Suite at Treasury Department headquarters in downtown Washington, DC, next door to the White House. The suite, named for onetime treasury secretary and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Salmon Chase, is one of the most historic offices in the building. It is in this room where Chase and then-President Abraham Lincoln developed much of the modern monetary policy for the United States as a way to finance the preservation of the American Republic during the Civil War. Greenbacks, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and even the IRS can trace their roots to this room.

 

Bessent has been on the job now for a little over a month — he was Senate-confirmed on Feb. 3, 2025.And new numbers released this week on inflationshow that in his first month on the job, the first full month of Trump’s presidency,both consumer prices and producer prices are coming in better than expected by economists.

 

 

While the administration is not out of the woods yet regarding the American economy,Bessent clearly is expressing optimism about the long-term views of the nation. Asked about this major development, and what more there is to be done,Bessent said the Trump White House “inherited” an “affordability crisis” from Biden and that right now the administration is doing everything it can to prevent “recursive Biden-flation.”

 

“You’re exactly right, but there were a lot of things that were out of control. So, the inflation was out of control. We inherited an affordability crisis,” Bessent told Breitbart News. “Hopefully, we don’t get a recursive Biden-flation. We’re very vigilant. It could happen again. But we are doing everything we can to keep it down.Before we can bring down inflation, we also want to help affordability.

 

So, as we bring down inflation, we want to bring the absoluteprice level down through deregulation and bringing down interest rates for house payments and car payments. Then, on inflation, we are seeing some nascent signs, I’d say.

 

Crude oil is down about 15 percent since President Trump took office. That’s something we’re focused on.Mortgage rates have come down every week since he’s been in office. So, there’s somegood signsbut as you said, there was a lot of blowout spending and a lot of blowout inflation.”

 

Asked what Trump’s team has already done to help fight this economic disaster that Biden left behind,Bessent said the “first thing” has been to get government spending “under control,” and he pointed to the efforts of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by businessman Elon Musk.

 

Then he pointed to work U.S. Department of Agriculture(USDA) Secretary Brooke Rollins has doneto bring down the price of eggs— and then to whatInterior Secretary Doug Burgum and EnergySecretary Chris Wright are doing tounleash American energy production. This broad vision, he said, is an “all-hands-on-deck, all areas of government” approach to stabilizing the U.S. economy.

“The first thing is to get the spending under control. I’ve said it several times that themainstream media likes to lampoon or parody DOGE,” Bessent said. “But this is serious business.

 

I think there is no one out there who thinks that the federal government couldn’t do things in a better way with less personnel and in a more effective way dollar for dollar. So we’re trying to bring down the spending and we’re determined to do that. We’re trying to rightsize the federal government. We are committed to that. As I mentioned, we’ve got oil prices down.

 

Secretary Rollins had a very good plan to get egg prices down.So the media sort of touted it when they were going up, but now they’re down 25 percent from the peak, and we don’t hear much about that. So it’s a kind of an all-hands-on-deck, all areas of government, that we are trying to do that.

 

Secretary Burgum and Secretary Wright are working on energy plans whether it’s permitting or this pipeline on the east coast that will bring prices down — we need the governor of New York to be our partner on that. So there’s a lot of good things happening.”

 

What is perhaps most amazing to Bessent, though, is just how bad the establishment and legacy media have been during Trump’s presidency in covering the economy.Bessent told Breitbart News he does not believe the term “fake news” is strong enough to describe just how inaccurate and off they are.

 

“When I was on the other side of the wall, I never really liked the term ‘fake news,’” Bessent said when asked about the establishment media.“Now that I am on the inside, and I can see what they’re reporting, I think the term ‘fake news’ probably isn’t strong enough. It’s really not. They start with an apriori and they’ve written the story, andthey’re just going to shapeshift facts to back into it.Many of the stories I’ve been involved with are just so far off — so far off.

 

There was a story in the New York Times the other daythat talked about 50 percent headcount decreases at the IRS. Nobody is talking about that.

 

These were on background. They were not named sources —and they’re just trying to stir tumult during the taxpayer filing season. It’s crazy.”
