On Saturday, we learned that Hunter's woes are worsening. He was facing an uncomfortable deposition in California, but a kindly judge allowed that case to be dismissed as Hunter's too broke to continue. So now the poverty-stricken former First Son has jetted off to Cape Town, South Africa, accompanied by his Secret Service retinue, to suffer from his poverty in a $500/night beachfront villa.

Hunter Biden fled last week to South Africa for a luxury vacation — with round-the-clock Secret Service protection — avoiding a grueling deposition scheduled for this week in a California lawsuit.

California District Court Judge Herman Vera granted Hunter’s motion to dismiss the case Thursday after the former first son claimed he was too broke to continue suing former Trump staffer Garrett Ziegler and his nonprofit Marco Polo.

But photographs show Hunter was already in Cape Town the day the case was dismissed, staying in a $500-a-night beachfront villa described on its website as an “ultra-luxurious designer home with spectacular 180 degrees unobstructed views of the sea.”

Well, that doesn't sound so bad. After all, it looks like Hunter's Ukrainian options are out, so a luxury beachfront hotel in South Africa may be the next best thing. As it turns out, Hunter has been gifted some unusual legal foresight, as he headed out to South Africa before his case was even dismissed.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg Orders Trump Administration to Halt Deportation of Illegal Aliens and Narcotrafficking Gang Members

It will not come as a surprise to CTH readers to hear the name Judge James Boasberg associated with efforts to protect the institutional interests of a corrupt DC deep state. Boasberg has a long, very long, and well documented history of protecting the DC apparatus {CTH Archives on Boasberg HERE}.

On Saturday, without giving the Trump administration any time to respond, Judge Boasberg issued an immediate temporary restraining order (TRO) blocking DHS, Customs and Border Patrol and ICE from deporting illegal aliens and narcotrafficking gang members belonging to Tren de Aragua (TdA), a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.

Boasberg ordered the flights of criminal gang members to turn around and immediately bring the criminals back to the USA to enjoy a life of criminal conduct and terrorism in the USA. National security is secondary to the rights of criminal aliens to sell drugs, continue child/sexploitation, murder American citizens and rape their targets.

As I wrote in 2021, Judge James Boasberg has long been severely compromised; there simply is no other way to look at his interception of cases to protect the system,and the depth of his corruption is clearly visible in this set of rulings.

WASHINGTON DC – A federal judge has ordered an immediate hold on efforts by President Donald Trump to quickly deport Venezuelan nationals under rarely used wartime powers intended to resist a foreign invasion — and demanded the return of planes already headed to Central America.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg on Saturday ordered the Trump administration to immediately halt efforts to remove those Venezuelan migrantsuntil he has more time to consider whether Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act was illegal.

Judge James Boasberg, an ally of SSCI Chairman Mark Warner, has intercepted several cases that brought sunlight upon the corrupt DC system. In each case Boasberg ruled in favor of maintaining the corruption, including his willfully blind support of the FBI searching NSA databases to conduct illegal surveillance of Americans.

This is the same Judge Boasberg who sat as presiding judge on the FISA court. The same Judge Boasberg who gave FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith a slap on the wrist for manufacturing evidence used in the Carter Page FISA application that defrauded the court. The same Judge Boasberg who appointed former DOJ-NSD head Mary McCord as amicus curiae advisor to the court, after she knowingly and fraudulently submitted the FISA application to the court.

This is the same Judge Boasberg gave J6 FBI agent provocateur Ray Epps a sentence of probation.This is the same judge who, on his vacation, went to sit in the DC courtroom to observe defendant President Trump who was forced to appear in DC court. This is the same Boasberg who established a horrible precedent in forcing Vice-President Mike Pence to testify before a DC grand jury about his conversations with President Trump (breaking executive privilege).

Boasberg sits at the epicenter of a thoroughly corrupt and compromised DC court system.

The ‘ah-ha’ moment to understandjust how bad James Boasberg was/is, came during his decision to appoint the wife of Chief Justice John Robert’s senior staff Sheldon Snook, Mrs. Mary McCord as amicus to the FISA Court. {GO DEEP}

Ministers have left the door open to a humiliating U-turn on their highly contentious plans to cut benefits for disabled people, amid mounting uproar over the proposals across the Labour party.

Both Downing Street and the Department for Work and Pensions did not deny they were about to backtrack on plans to impose a real-terms cut to the personal independence payment (Pip) for disabled people, including those who cannot work, by cancelling an inflation-linked rise due to come into force next spring.

The plans had been earmarked for inclusion in a green paper scheduled to be published on Tuesday and had been one of several elements of a wider package of welfare cuts designed to save between £5bn and £6bn on the ballooning benefits bill.

Ministers, who are facing the wrath of Labour MPs and peers over the plans, are understood to have taken fright after being accused in meetings with MPs of planning measures rejected as unfair even by former Tory chancellor George Osborne during the Conservative years of austerity.

In his Political Currency podcast last week with former Labour shadow chancellor Ed Balls, Osborne said: “I didn’t freeze Pip. I thought [it] would not be regarded as very fair. What I did try to do was reform Pip.”

Balls, who is married to the home secretary, Yvette Cooper, infuriated Downing Street by saying on the same podcast that the plan would not work if its aim was to get more people back into work, adding that “it’s not a Labour thing to do”.

At a tense cabinet meeting last Tuesday, several serving members raised their concerns about how the Labour government would be viewed if it froze Pip and made it more difficult to receive payments.

Any plan to freeze Pip or change eligibility rules would require primary legislation, running the risk that they could become the focus of a sizeable Labour rebellion in the Commons and the Lords. Venus and the Triply Ultraviolet Sun

This was a very unusual type of solar eclipse. Typically, it is the Earth's Moon that eclipses the Sun. In 2012, though, the planet Venus took a turn. Like a solar eclipse by the Moon, the phase of Venus became a continually thinner crescent as Venus became increasingly better aligned with the Sun. Eventually the alignment became perfect and the phase of Venus dropped to zero. The dark spot of Venus crossed our parent star. The situation could technically be labeled a Venusian annular eclipse with an extraordinarily large ring of fire. Pictured here during the occultation, the Sun was imaged in three colors of ultraviolet light by the Earth-orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory, with the dark region toward the right corresponding to a coronal hole. Hours later, as Venus continued in its orbit, a slight crescent phase appeared again. The next Venusian transit across the Sun will occur in 2117.

Speaking to the Observer, Liz Kendall, the work and pensions secretary, insisted that Labour was sympathetic to those unable to work because of disability.

“I know as a constituency MP for 14 long years under the Tories that there will always be some people who cannot work because of the severity of their disability or health condition,” she said. “Protecting people in genuine need is a principle Labour will never compromise on.”

But she also insisted that the system badly needed reform to ensure that people did not spend a lifetime on benefits and to prevent the overall benefits bill from soaring even higher. “Being trapped on benefits if you can work is terrible for people’s living standards, health and opportunities,” Kendall said.

She added: “It’s terrible for the country too, as spending on the costs of failure soar. The sickness and disability bill for working age people has increased by £20bn since the pandemic, with a further £18bn rise to £70bn projected over the next five years.

We must fix this broken system for the people who depend on it and the country as a whole.”

In a further measure to placate furious Labour MPs, sources said Kendall would move to legislate to create “a right to try” guarantee to ensure sick and disabled people could take a job safe in the knowledge that they would not be forced to undergo a new reassessment and the possibility of losing their benefits as a result.

One million people would see their benefits reduced under the government’s proposed reforms, according to the Times.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation said that it would be the biggest cut to disability benefits since the Office for Budget Responsibility was created in 2010.

Ministers are said to be examining changing eligibility for Pip in such a way that it would not be available for people who need someone else to help them wash below the waist, or need to be reminded to go to the toilet to prevent them having an accident.

The new rules would, in effect, mean that only the most severely disabled would receive Pip, while those with mental health conditions would not.

Ministers are also planning to scrap the work capability assessment, which is used to decide if people receiving universal credit are fit for work. It is separate from Pip, which is intended to help cover the extra costs of being disabled, whether or not they can work.

About 4.8 million people receive Pip or the benefit it was designed to replace, the disability living allowance.

Campaigners say the problem facing disabled people is that even those who are desperate to return to the workforce find they cannot cope, or employers are not willing to accommodate them.

A government programme that supported 286,000 disabled people over the past seven years who wanted to find work was only able to secure jobs for one in five.

Anna Stevenson, a benefits expert at the disability charity Turn2us, said: “These were people who, although they were unwell, thought they were probably well enough to work and really keen to work.”

Stevenson said that if the government was serious about helping more disabled people into work, it needed to change employment law.

“If you want very high employment among disabled people, one of the things you need to change is how easy it is for employers to fire people when they’re ill. But that has the potential to distort the labour market. There are always trade-offs.”

In the 1970s, employers would put workers on “light duties” if they were unable to do harder, physical jobs, but that practice has all but vanished, leaving disabled people to rely on the state instead.

The Department for Work and Pensions said: “We have a duty to get the welfare bill on a more sustainable path and we will achieve that through meaningful, principled reforms rather than arbitrary cuts to spending.

“That why as part of our Plan for Change we will bring forward our proposals for reform shortly that will unlock work to help us reach our ambition of an 80% employment rate, and is fairer to all.”

NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov arrived at the International Space Station on Sunday, as the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft docked to the orbiting complex at 12:04 a.m. EDT, while the station was roughly 260 statute miles over the Atlantic Ocean.

Following Dragon’s link up to the forward-facing port of the station’s Harmony module, the crew members aboard Dragon and the space station will begin conducting standard leak checks and pressurization between the spacecraft and the station in preparation for hatch opening scheduled for approximately 1:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Crew-10 will join the Expedition 72 crew of NASA astronauts Nick Hague, Don Petitt, Suni Williams, and Butch Wilmore, as well as Roscosmos cosmonauts Aleksandr Gorbunov, Alexey Ovchinin, and Ivan Vagner.

The number of crew aboard the space station will increase to 11 people before Crew-9 members Hague, Williams, Wilmore, and Gorbunov return to Earth following the crew handover period.

I found a rock in front of the houses, that could get caught by a lawnmower and break a window. I picked it up.

It was an UGLY fucking rock. scuffed against other rocks, and UGLY Basalt black with granite or some shit.. JUST butt ugly.

So I tried some 100 Grit sand paper to take the scuffs off it and in short time I said fuck this.

Then I grabbed my Arcrylic paints. started painting one side NAPTHOL RED DA104

'Alien' encounter: NASA astronaut plays joke as SpaceX team arrives

Even astronauts have a sense of humor, as shown during NASA's Crew-10 docking on the International Space Station (ISS), when they were met by an "alien" early Sunday morning.

Crew-9 commander Nick Hague wore an alien mask while welcoming four newcomers after their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule docked to the station at 12:04 a.m., about 29 hours after launching at 7:03 p.m. on Friday from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

While ISS crew members were preparing the capsule for deboarding, Hague could be seen floating around while wearing a mask, a hoodie, pants and socks.

"NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov entered the International Space Station shortly after opening the hatches between the space station and the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft at 1:35 a.m. EDT," NASA said in a statement.

Following the hatch opening by Suni Williams, the ship's bell was rung as the new arrivals floated in, shook hands and hugged the Expedition 72 crew after Hague's practical joke.

"It was a wonderful day. Great to see our friends arrive," Williams told Mission Control.

Williams and Butch Wilmore are expected to show the new arrivals the ins and outs of the space station before they finally return home after nine months.

Their mission was only scheduled to last one week after a launch of Boeing's first astronaut flight, but they were stuck in space after issues forced NASA to bring the Boeing Starliner back empty.

Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov are scheduled to depart the station on Wednesday as early as 4 a.m. before splashing down off Florida's coast.

"Dunham’s boss atUSAID in Indonesia, Dr. Donald Gordon Jr., author of Credit for Small Farmers in Developing Countries for USAID (1976), was identified in Julius Mader’s 1968 book, Who Who’s in the CIA, as a CIA agent.9

Another boss, Peter Geithner, was future Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner’s father.

Ann obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in anthropology at the University of Hawaii, writing a thesis which argued that Indonesian villagers were dynamic and could produce greater wealth if they had access to market incentives and capital.

Ann went to Indonesia in the mid 1960s at the time that the CIA supported a military coup led by General Suharto against the left-wing regime of Sukarno.

Over two million suspected members of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) were rounded up and massacred in its aftermath and thousands more were imprisoned—many for decades.

Much of Ann’s anthropological and consulting field work was carried out in East and Central Java, which provided a hotbed of support for the PKI—including among members of the Javanese women’s association and labor federation.

The CIA at this time employed anthropologists and development workers as undercover agents to gather information on villagers’ political affiliations, in which Ann, according to her thesis adviser, Alice Dewey, had taken an interest."

"In March 1965, Ann married an Indonesian Lieutenant Colonel, Lolo Soetoro, whom she met at the University of Hawaii’s East-West Center, a “kinder, gentler version of the School of the Americas,” according to one writer, and “cover for a training program in which Southeast Asians were brought to Hawaii and trained to go back to create agent nets,” as U.S. Information Service (USIS) Director Frank Scotten described it.

The head of the East-West Center in 1965 was Howard P. Jones, U.S. ambassador to Indonesia from 1958 to 1965.10

Jones was present in Jakarta as Suharto and his CIA-backed military officers planned the 1965 overthrow of Sukarno, who was seen, along with the PKI as an ally of China.

Jones later defended the coup in The Washington Post, writing that Suharto was merely responding to a communist coup against Sukarno led by Colonel Untung—which was actually set up by the CIA.11

A friend of Ann’s told her biographer that the marriage to Lolo was arranged, suggesting that Ann may have acted as a female “honeypot” for the CIA whose job was to recruit assets and help them obtain U.S. citizenship.

Hailing from an aristocratic family which lost out in Sukarno’s land reform, Soetoro was recalled to active duty in July 1965 before General Suharto’s right-wing coup and worked as an army geographer in Java and Papua New Guinea, where the Indonesian army brutally suppressed popular revolts.

Soetoro went on to become an executive at Mobil Oil and its liaison to Suharto, whose economic policies Dunham praised."

Obama’s grandfather Stanley Armour Dunham—who helped raise him—served with the 9th Air Force Division in World War II.

He was pictured in a military uniform with no insignia, which suggests an intelligence unit.

Another photo featured his daughter Ann, with the insignia of an elite school in Lebanon on her shirt in the 1950s, where Stanley may have worked with the CIA or another U.S. government agency.

In the early 1960s, Stanley Dunham was part of a group photo taken with Barack Obama, Sr., on his departure from the University of Hawaii.

Obama Sr. had been part of a State Department/CIA exchange financed in part by the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation that brought future African leaders to the U.S. who were being groomed to serve U.S. interests in the Cold War.

The photo would suggest that Dunham was one of the coordinators of the exchange, indicating work for the State Department or CIA.

ROME, October 28, 2013 - World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim and His Holiness Pope Francis met today at the Vatican to discuss their mutual efforts to end extreme poverty and provide greater opportunities for the poor and vulnerable.

“I was so grateful to meet with the Holy Father and was inspired by his passion and commitment to help the poor, the sick, and the hungry,” Kim said. “We talked about ways we could work together with faith leaders to make a preferential option for the poor, so they can have greater opportunity and justice in their lives.”

Kim thanked Pope Francis for his strong statements encouraging humble service to the less fortunate, as well as his support for better education, health care, environmental protection, and jobs with fair wages to help the poor lift themselves out of poverty.

Following the 20-minute meeting, Pope Francis and Kim agreed to explore ways to work together to end extreme poverty.

“At the World Bank Group, we have set a goal to end extreme poverty in less than a generation, and to boost shared prosperity for the bottom 40 percent of people in developing countries,” Kim said. “Pope Francis and I agree on the urgent moral imperative to lessen the suffering of over 1 billion people and to end the scandal of poverty. We share a vision of a world with greater compassion for all people in need.”

During his visit, Kim also met with Monseigneur Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States, and discussed closer collaboration between the Church and the World Bank Group.

“Pope Francis unites us all with the moral clarity of his message on poverty,” Kim said. “We must address the root causes of poverty by giving the poor access to education, health care, and good jobs–benefitting women, young people, and those denied opportunities in the past.”

A circled s (Ⓢ) was used in documents circa 1900 printed by German missionaries, especially the Basel Mission, in the Malayalam language to denote a ditto mark.[4]

In September 1895, Georg Baumberger, the chief editor of the St. Gall newspaper Die Ostschweiz, wrote an article about the Red Cross founder, whom he had met and conversed with during a walk in Heiden a month earlier. The article entitled "Henri Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross", appeared in the German Illustrated Magazine Über Land und Meer, and the article was soon reprinted in other publications throughout Europe. The article struck a chord, and he received renewed attention and support.

He received the Swiss Binet-Fendt Prize and a note from Pope Leo XIII. Because of support from Russian tsarist widow Maria Feodorovna and other donations, his financial situation improved remarkably.

Rosario Valastro is the new President of the Italian Red Cross. In the aftermath of Francesco Rocca’s resignation, the most natural choice was to appoint the vice president at the helm of the historic voluntary organisation

A decision that was anything but surprising, in reality.

President Valastro, who was born in Acireale (Catania) in 1974, graduated in Law with a specialisation in Public Administration Sciences, has been working in the social field as a volunteer for thirty years,

and therefore combines a relatively young age with vast experience.

We asked for an interview with the newly elected president, and were kindly granted one.

Good morning President Valastro, let’s get straight down to business: within a few months there will be elections in the Red Cross. What is the ‘state of the art’ with which the CRI comes to us?

‘The Red Cross,’ the President replies, ‘will arrive at the April elections enjoying excellent health, both in terms of credibility and in terms of operations.

Credibility is undoubtedly necessary in an organisation that deals with humanitarian aid in general, as it means credibility in the eyes of institutions, credibility in the eyes of donors, and above all credibility in the eyes of people who are vulnerable and who need to be helped.

And it also comes to us in terms of operations, as we now have an all-round deployment, with committees that are very active on their own territory, in all the health and emergency aspects, and with interesting projects that are carried out abroad.

I think I can say that we have contributed to overcoming the pandemic phase, both at the beginning and in the vaccination campaign: I think we all come away volunteers proud of the association we belong to’.

I also ask you a question that I put to your ‘peer’ in ANPAS, Niccolò Mancini: the energy crisis is putting a strain on the accounts of voluntary associations.

Especially the smallest ones have to cope with pre-Covid agreement tariffs, but current costs have risen sharply. What do you ask of the institutions in this regard?

“The first thing I would ask the institutions is to leave what is working in this country, that is, the great professionalism, passion, motivation, and solidarity that all Italian volunteers express in the social-health field.

We really count on thousands of volunteers who are at the disposal of the communities during the day, at night, on Sundays, on holidays: they do it for free and they do it with great competence.

A competence they have acquired both through training and by being active in the field.

To squander this heritage would be to dissipate an immense patrimony, as well as not doing justice to the history that the voluntary sector has helped to create in this country.

And to do this, urgent action must be taken to support the Third Sector’.

The Italian chronicle speaks of an emergency sector that is increasingly in crisis, and the bills that cyclically appear in parliament seem to be more extemporaneous initiatives than real 118 reform projects.

President Valastro, what would the Red Cross’ recipe be, if you could indicate solutions?

‘We set up,’ says the President of the CRI, ‘a permanent table a few years ago, together with the ANPAS and the Confederation of the Misericordie:

we did this because we are the first to care about the professional intervention of our volunteers.

We are not against this.

We already do this: we have costs that are absolutely adequate for people who suffer a road accident or who are ill.

Any changes to these training events, which we already have substantial, must correspond to a rationale, which we do not see at the moment.

What we hope for is an all-round focus on service, for volunteers to be able to donate their time.

There is a great tradition of people who, after returning from work, go to the headquarters and donate their time because they want to be useful to their community in the social and health field.

It is easy to overlook this: just don’t look at the rising prices, the out-of-pocket expenses that the associations have to pay.

This is something that has to be considered’.

Let’s talk about Civil Protection: the climate change to which all the Red Crosses of the world devote initiatives and reflections is now a reality that Italians are touching with their own hands.

Maxi emergencies and natural disasters occur with increasing frequency.

How is the Red Cross structured in this area? I mean: are there hubs dedicated to specific sectors (e.g. hydrogeology in some places, drones in others, and so on) or is it a uniform distribution of resources in the individual regions?

Democrats' favorability ratings sank to a record low in the latest CNN poll released Sunday.

Opposing the popular-vote winner in President Donald Trump, obstructing his agenda and efforts to cut government waste, fraud, and abuse, and threatening to shut down the government by rejecting their own President Joe Biden-era spending levels in a continuing resolution did not sit well with registered Democrats and left-siding independent adults.

Even a majority of Democrat adults (52%) are saying the leadership of the party is taking things in the wrong direction.

That eye-popping poll result flips the majority that had sided otherwise eight years ago at the start of the first Trump administration, according to CNN.

Democrats' favorability has dropped 20 points since January 2021 when Biden first took office after Jan. 6, falling now to 29% – a record low dating back to 1992 when former President Bill Clinton came in to defeat sitting President George H.W. Bush. The Republican Party had held the White House for three full terms through former President Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush before Clinton was elected in 1992.

Democrats and Democrat-siding independents give their own leaders just 63% favorability, which is down from 72% in January and 81% at the start of the Biden administration.

Republicans are far more happy with their leaders, as 79% of Republicans and GOP-siding independents have a favorable view of Republicans.

House GOP Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has called Democrats "leaderless" and "rudderless," and those polled largely agree.

When asked who among Democrats "best reflects the core values" of the party (with no names and just a blank space to respond):

30% did not name someone.

10% said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris 9%.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., 8%.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., 6%.

Former President Barack Obama 4%.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, 4%.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., tied with many others at 2%.

"No one: That's the problem," one respondent wrote, CNN reported. "That's the problem."

The CNN poll was conducted by SSRS from March 6-9 among 1,206 U.S. adults. The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points. In the Democrats' sub-sample of 504, the margin of error is plus or minus 5.0 percentage points.

The United States has removed hundreds of alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua using now-blocked authority from the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday.

"Hundreds of violent criminals were sent out of our country," Rubio said in a statement.

El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele said in a post on X that 238 alleged members of the Venezuelan gang had arrived in his country and were immediately transferred to a "Terrorism Confinement Center" for a one-year period that could be renewed.

Bukele said the U.S. had also sent 23 members of the Salvadoran gang MS-13, including two high-ranking members.

President Donald Trump on Friday invoked the wartime Alien Enemies Act to rapidly deport alleged members of Tren de Aragua, a criminal organization that has been linked to kidnapping, extortion, organized crime and contract killings.

The deportations took place despite a US federal judge granting a temporary suspension of the expulsions order, apparently as planes were already headed to El Salvador.

The precise timing of the flights to El Salvador is important because the judge issued his order shortly before 7 p.m. in Washington, but video posted from El Salvador shows them disembarking the plane at night.

El Salvador is two time zones behind Washington, raising questions about whether the Trump administration ignored an explicit court order.

"Today, the first 238 members of the Venezuelan criminal organization, Tren de Aragua, arrived in our country," Bukele said Sunday morning on X, sharing a video of several men in handcuffs and shackles being transferred from a plane to a heavily guarded convoy.

Trump signed an order invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 on Friday, but it was not publicly announced until Saturday.

The wartime authority allows a president to detain or deport citizens of an enemy nation, and has been invoked only three times before – during major international conflicts, including World War I and II.

Bukele, in a meeting last month with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, had offered to house prisoners from the United States in his country, including members of Tren de Aragua and Salvador's own MS-13 gang.

Mega-jail with windowless cells -

The iron-fisted leader is extremely popular in his Latin American country for a successful crackdown on violent gangs, but has faced criticism from human rights groups.

His offer to take in foreign convicts for a fee has divided Salvadorans, who fear it could set back the country's efforts to fight violent crime.

Bukele said the alleged gang members had been sent to the country's maximum security Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), a mega-prison on the edge of a jungle 75 kilometers (45 miles) southeast of San Salvador with capacity for 40,000 prisoners.

Inmates at the prison are packed in windowless cells, sleep on metal beds with no mattresses are forbidden from having visitors.

Wartime legislation -

Trump, in his order, claimed Tren de Aragua was "conducting irregular warfare against the territory of the United States both directly and at the direction, clandestine or otherwise, of the Maduro regime."

The statement gives Trump's Attorney General Pam Bondi 60 days to enact the ruling making all Tren de Aragua gang members "subject to immediate apprehension, detention and removal."

The detention and expulsion order will apply to all Venezuelan Tren de Aragua members who are over 14 and not naturalized US citizens or lawful permanent residents.

The ACLU and an allied group, Democracy Forward, asked the US District Court in Washington to bar the deportations – arguing that the 1798 act was not intended for use in peacetime.

Judge James Boasberg on Saturday issued a 14-day halt to any deportation under the new order.

Bondi slammed the ruling, saying in a statement that it "disregards well-established authority regarding President Trump's power, and it puts the public and law enforcement at risk."

The El Salvador prison where the alleged gang members were sent already houses some 15,000 members of the MS-13 and rival Salvadoran Barrio 18 gangs.

They were rounded up under a state of emergency imposed by Bukele after a surge in gang violence in 2022.

Some are serving sentences of over 200 years.

Frightened by the prospect of US security disengagement and three years of Moscow's war against Ukraine, European countries are debating reinstating compulsory military service to boost their defences in the face of Russian aggression.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 caught Europe off guard, and fears about the strength of NATO surged further after US President Donald Trump upended the transatlantic alliance, saying Europe must take care of its own security.

Both military analysts and European governments acknowledge that the threat of Russian aggression is real, today even more so than three years ago.

"The Russian military today is larger and better than on February 24, 2022. The Russians have hostile intent against the Baltic states and the EU's eastern flank," said Alexandr Burilkov, a researcher at the Institute of Political Science (IPW) at Heidelberg University.

According to a study Burilkov co-authored for think tank Bruegel and the Kiel Institute, Europe could need 300,000 more troops to deter Russian aggression, in addition to 1.47 million active-duty military personnel.

"Conscription would have to play a role in any such large numbers of new troops," he said.

From Paris to Warsaw, leaders have been looking to boost defence spending in the face of US threats to withdraw its European security guarantees.

But many countries, including France and Britain, have struggled with recruiting and retaining troops. Reintroducing some form of national service compulsory or voluntary might be even more difficult.

According to a YouGov poll, most people in France (68 percent) and Germany (58 percent) support mandatory military service for young people. Italian and British people are divided, while a majority of Spaniards (53 percent) are against it.

But studies also show that many Europeans are not prepared to defend their countries on the battlefield.

"In a liberal society, the imposition of military constraints has become nearly impossible to implement," said Benedicte Cheron, a French expert who studies links between society and the armed forces.

"As long as there is no invasion of the territory, accepting the political costs of imposing sanctions on those who do not comply with the call-up seems unthinkable."

Scientists develop space-age building material that could revolutionize future cities: 'Requires no energy or electricity'

A breakthrough material may revolutionize sustainable construction going forward. To do so, it will reimagine the way that buildings are cooled.

The most energy-draining aspect of the average building is its cooling system.

Keeping a building at a comfortable temperature can take a ton of electricity, and it requires refrigerants that are harmful to the environment.

Any cooling method that might reduce energy and refrigerant needs can therefore reduce a building's environmental impact.

An international team of scientists has developed a new material that may be the answer to this problem, according to Tech Xplore.

It's a porous plastic sheet about 1/12 of an inch thick that can deflect 96% of light, thereby providing a radiative cooling effect. The sheet is made from powdered polymethyl methacrylate.

There are radiative cooling materials out there, but co-lead researcher Akhlesh Lakhtakia said this one offers something that they do not.

"While other passive radiators reflect short-wave infrared light back into space, our passive radiator reflects both visible light and short-wave infrared light, which results in high daytime cooling," Lakhtakia said.

Lakhtakia also said that these sheets should be an inexpensive way to provide supplemental cooling to residential homes. The research team's recently published study revealed just how effective that supplemental cooling should be.

Researchers placed a box made of powdered polymethyl methacrylate sheets with a thermometer inside it in the sun on an 80-degree Fahrenheit day.

The thermometer remained at 63.5 degrees Fahrenheit, compared with the 75.2 degrees Fahrenheit of the thermometer placed in a plain cardboard box.

This amazing development is not the only potentially revolutionary building material. Some scientists are turning to recycled garbage or lemons and coconuts to reimagine construction.

Then there's hempcrete, which is a remarkable material made by combining hemp fiber and lime binder. Hempcrete is strong, durable, and breathable. It's also carbon-negative.

The sheets developed by Lakhtakia's team are expected to last for a few years. However, Lakhtakia said that they are easy to recycle and reuse, adding yet another exciting aspect of this potentially game-changing material.

"The passive daytime cooling requires no energy or electricity and can be applied to buildings in communities experiencing increased daytime temperatures year over year due to climate change," Lakhtakia said.

There is a saying on your world: “where your attention goes, energy flows.”

Now, this principle is true. And this principle also correctly suggests to not spend too much time on consuming depressing news that isn’t directly relevant to you, for example.

However, people who hear this principle may think that if pain or so-called negative emotions arise in them, then they should suppress those feelings. Because after all, if you pay attention to pain or to so-called negative emotions, then your energy flows to them, right? And surely you don’t want that.

Well, the issue here is that people misinterpret who “you” is.

When people hear: “where your attention goes, energy flows”, they interpret this as if “your” only refers to their conscious mind. However, “your” also includes your subconscious and your soul, among others.

So yes: “where your mind goes, energy flows — and ‘you’ includes your subconscious and your soul.”

And if you suppress pain or so-called negative emotions, then your subconscious keeps focusing on that pain or on the so-called negative emotions. Whereas if you just observe them, without immediately trying to change or suppress or judge that, then they will weaken or leave after a period of time, and then all of you will stop giving attention to it.

So the actual best way to deal with so-called negative emotions — observing them — is the opposite of what many people think that sentence suggests — suppress your negative emotions

This realization, that you aren’t just your conscious mind but are also your subconscious and your soul, is actually important in general. And it clarifies other spiritual principles too.

For example, yes, you can manifest the desired life you want — but that “you” includes your subconscious and your soul. So if you have subconscious blocks or trauma, then repeatedly visualizing a nice life probably won’t work. And if your soul wants you to learn a certain lesson, or just wants you to have a certain kind of life experience, or wants you to go through rough things so that you can be a wounded healer later, then that too is a part of “you” that can manifest things.

This also means that it’s pretty silly to make arguments like “if you have a nice life, you’re spiritually advanced; if you don’t, you’re not.” Whether someone’s life is pleasant is greatly impacted by what kind of experiences their soul wants them to have in that life.

For example, if one person’s soul wants to experience love in this life, they might pretty effortlessly roll into a blissful relationship and a happy life.

If another person’s soul wants to do service as a wounded healer, they might experience decades of hell.

Now obviously your soul isn’t the only determining factor. Your conscious mind and your actions matter too. It is absolutely worth it to do spiritual practice and to practically improve your life. And yes, some people do make better choices than others, and making better choices does tend to lead to having a better life.

Still, it is useful to keep in mind that “you” are more than just your conscious mind.

Star wars: alarm at space agency’s 130 meetings with MoD

Senior officials from the UK Space Agency held over 130 meetings with the Ministry of Defence in 2024, prompting renewed concerns about the “weaponisation” of space.

The meetings discussed the spaceport being built at SaxaVord on Shetland, using nuclear reactors in space and collaboration with the US, NATO and arms companies. Two members of the agency’s advisory board also work for the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The subject of one meeting was kept secret because it was about a project that was “highly confidential and not in the public domain”. Releasing its title risked “compromising our nation’s security”, said the agency.

The meetings, revealed in response to a freedom of information request, have been criticised by campaigners. Though Scotland’s bid to build spaceports is marketed as scientific research, it is driven by the defence industry, they say.

They warn that space could become a “new frontier of conflict” that would put humanity at risk. They fear that spaceports could be “a trojan horse for the arms industry” and demand transparency.

The Space Agency and the MoD both stressed it was necessary to work together “to protect critical national infrastructure from space-based threats”.

SaxaVord, on the northern tip of the most northerly inhabited Shetland isle, Unst, is leading the race to open a spaceport in Scotland. It told MPs in February that it would be ready for its first launch in July.

The Shetland News also reported in February that Scotland’s richest man and biggest private landowner, Anders Holch Povlsen, had increased his stake in SaxaVord from 25 per cent to over 50 per cent, making him the majority shareholder.

The Ferret reported in 2021 that Povlsen secretly lobbied the Scottish Government against building another spaceport on the A’ Mhoine peninsula in north Sutherland, near one of his estates.

In December 2024 work on the Sutherland spaceport was put on hold, with initial launches planned from SaxaVord instead. There are also spaceports planned for Machrihanish on the Kintyre peninsula, Prestwick in South Ayrshire and North Uist in the Outer Hebrides.

The UK Space Agency was asked to list all meetings by six of its senior staff with the MoD in 2024. The agency responded under freedom of information law with a six-page list taken from calendar records, showing over 130 meetings. Some were attended by more than one agency official.

Nine meetings of the agency’s advisory board and its audit and risk assurance committee in 2024 also involved people who work for the MoD. According to the agency’s register of interests, two of its non-executive board members, Kevin Shaw and Peter Watkins, are paid advisors for the MoD.

Most of the 130 meetings were given a title, summarising their purpose. On 15 January 2024 the Space Agency’s chief executive, Dr Paul Bate, met the MoD for a “discussion on SaxaVord and next steps for His Majesty’s Government”.

Earlier the same month, agency director, Matt Archer, discussed SaxaVord with the government’s National Security Strategic Investment Fund, which invests in defence.

On 27 March 2024 Archer met the MoD with Orbex, the Scottish space company that switched its planned launches from Sutherland to SaxaVord.

Archer attended four meetings in 2024 with the MoD to discuss NATO space plans. Along with the MoD, he also met with the US Space Force and at the US Embassy.

Chief executive Bate met four times with Major General Paul Tedman, for “catch-ups”, lunch and a discussion on the MoD’s strategic defence review.

Tedman was appointed as the UK’s military space commander in May 2024, having previously been a deputy director at US Space Command.

The Space Agency’s two deputy chief executives, Annelies Look and Chris White-Horne, also had lunch with Tedman on 22 October 2024.

In addition, Look and Bate had meetings with the MoD about the use of nuclear power in space, and White-Horne discussed “space defence civil alignment”.

Alongside the MoD, Bate met with three big arms companies in 2024. They were the British arms multinational, BAE Systems; the European aerospace and defence company, Airbus; and the joint French and Italian venture, Thales Alenia Space.

Naming space project would ‘compromise national security’

The name of one company involved in a meeting was kept secret to protect its “commercial interests”. The title of another meeting was redacted “for the purposes of safeguarding national security”, the Space Agency said.

It added: “This meeting title references an area of work which is highly confidential and not in the public domain.

Releasing this information into the public domain would undermine our position with defence colleagues and any damage to these relationships with our partner departments could compromise our nation’s security.”

The freedom of information request was made by the campaign group, Space Watch UK. “Although the space industry presents itself as being about science, discovery, and inspiration, the reality is that much of the work in the sector is military related,” said the group’s Peter Burt.

“The information released by the Space Agency shows that it works hand-in-hand with the MoD over virtually the whole remit of the agency’s work – launch programmes, satellite communication, earth observation, and international co-operation.”

Burt pointed out that space technologies were born out of weaponry developed by the Nazis in World War Two. “Nowadays these technologies are still being developed, not for the collective benefit of humankind, but largely for their military applications,” he told The Ferret.

“When space programmes become indistinguishable from military agendas we accelerate a new frontier of conflict. Space should be a realm of shared scientific endeavour, not a battleground for geopolitical dominance.”

He added: “Military space projects divert resources from humanitarian needs and normalise the weaponisation of the cosmos – increasing the risks we all face from warfare. We need to see more transparency from the UK Space Agency about co-operation with the MoD.”

Concern that space could be ‘hijacked by the military’

The Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, which has also been monitoring spaceports, argued that space should be kept for peace.

“Secrecy about launches whose purpose if declared would ‘compromise our nation’s security’ does not sound like a civil communications satellite or scientific experiment,” said the campaign’s David Kelly.

“We do not expect to be told the details of the UK’s defence strategy. But the truth about what these spaceports are really for, instead of the fluff about civilian use, would be appropriate.”

According to the Scottish Greens, spaceports could be “amazing” for scientific research. “We would be very concerned if it is being hijacked by the military or used as a trojan horse for the arms industry and the further militarisation of space,” said the Green MSP, Ariane Burgess.

“This data raises a lot of questions, but we need answers from the MoD and others, particularly when the United States is acting so recklessly and irresponsibly on the world stage.”

The UK Space Agency highlighted the formation of the UK Government’s National Space Operations Centre to bring together “civil and military” capabilities.

“We work closely with a range of government departments to deliver our shared ambitions for the UK space sector and to protect critical national infrastructure from space-based threats,” said an agency spokesperson.

The Ministry of Defence made the same point. “The MoD and UK Space Command have a number of routine engagements with allies and partners,” said a spokesperson.

“Collaboration between departments and partners is essential for the continued success of the UK space sector and to protect critical national infrastructure from space-based threats.”

SaxaVord did not respond to requests to comment.

The Ferret reported in 2020 that the arms industry was preparing to use Scottish spaceports to launch military spy satellites. At that time, multinational arms companies were manoeuvring to take advantage of the spaceports.
