Inglewood Man Shot and Killed Attempting to Stop Catalytic Converter Theft, Two Illegal Aliens Arrested for Alleged Killing

A hero in Inglewood, CA, attempted to stop the theft of a catalytic converter by two illegal aliens.

 

When Juan Sanchez confronted the two men, at least one of them fired a gun at him, hitting Sanchez fatally in the chest. He left behind a wife and two kids.

 

After identifying the two suspects, Wilver Alberto Rabanales and Jose Christian Saravia Sanchez, officers were able to arrest them. After getting a search warrant, the police arrested both of them in a motel in the city of Cudahy on Thursday night.

Police arrested two men suspected of killing a good Samaritan who tried to stop them from stealing his neighbor’s catalytic converter in Inglewood, officials announced Friday.

 

The Inglewood Police Department said it was with “invaluable” help from the community that homicide detectives successfully identified the two suspects, Wilver Alberto Rabanales and Jose Christian Saravia Sanchez.

 

Officers executed a search warrant on Thursday night at a motel in Cudahy, where they found and arrested Wilver and Jose.

 

“The fundraiser, raising money for his funeral, called Sanchez a “devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a cherished friend to so many.” His family told KTLA that he’d recently received a promotion at work after helping out Los Angeles fire victims.” KTLA 5 Reported.

ThankQ, I was the one who originally brought that to the board, and I love it, when anons and patriots put into practice these principles, not for vanity reasons, but actually for the sake of humanity and the sanctity of life. Another one of my sayings was "We are not anti-X" where X is a specialized group but we are "pattern matching". That breaks their narrative and also leads us to the sanctity of life. Well said anon. In a 21 February speech in the European Parliament, renowned professor Jeffrey Sachs said, ‘When the Soviet Union ended in 1991, the view became even more exaggerated. The view was that we [the US] run the show. We will clean up from the former Soviet Union. We will take out any remaining Soviet-era allies. Countries like Iraq, Syria, and so forth will go. And we’ve been experiencing this foreign policy for essentially 33 years. Europe has paid a heavy price for this because Europe has not had any foreign policy during this period. No voice, no unity, no clarity, no European interests, only American loyalty.’

 

He added that the European Union should be the main trading partner of Russia. ‘Europe and Russia have complementary economies. The fit for mutually beneficial trade is very strong. The Trump administration is imperialist at heart. Trump obviously believes that the great powers dominate the world. The US will be ruthless and cynical, and yes, also vis-à-vis Europe. Don’t go begging to Washington. That won’t help. Instead, have a true and independent European foreign policy.

US pushing to soften anti-Russia language in G7 document – Bloomberg

Washington reportedly wants to “water down” the wording of the final communique

 

The US has been pushing to soften the language aimed at Russia= in the final communique of the upcoming G7 foreign ministers’ meeting, Bloomberg has reported, citing a draft of the joint statement and people familiar with the matter.

 

The Group of Seven, comprising Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and US,will meet next week in the Canadian city of Charlevoix.

 

According to the report published on Saturday, the administration of US President Donald Trump is pushing to strengthen the language on China while “watering down” the wording on Russia. The US wants to remove the word ‘sanctions’ from the final statement and replace the wording about Russia’s ability to “maintain its war” with “earn revenue,” Bloomberg said.

 

=The US has reportedly rejected Canada’s proposal to establish a task force that would monitor the so-called ‘shadow fleet’ of oil tankers the West claims Russia is operating to bypass sanctions on energy exports. During the final weeks of the previous administration of President Joe Biden, the US blacklisted more than 180 vessels allegedly used to illegally transport Russian oil. Moscow insists that all Western sanctions are illegal and has denied that it operates a shadow fleet.

 

Trump has abandoned his predecessor’s strategy of “isolating” Russia on the world stageand reopened direct talks with Russia, which were suspended in 2022. He has stressed that his priority is to end the conflict through diplomacy and reach a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev.

 

Last week, Trump suggested that the US could lift the sanctions “at some point” during peace talks. He has since threatened Moscow with a new round of “large-scale” sanctions until a ceasefire and a “final settlement agreement on peace” is reached.

 

Moscow has stated that the Western sanctions have failed to weaken or isolate Russia, instead harming the countries that imposed them.

Musk calls for sanctions on Ukrainian oligarchs

The billionaire has said that such a step could compel Kiev to start the peace process

Elon Musk has suggested thatsanctioning Ukraine’s top ten oligarchs could bring about a swift resolution to the conflict with Russia. He offered the unusual proposal in a post on X on Saturday.

 

Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), was responding to a discussion on US financial aid to Ukraine. He has frequently criticized US support for Kiev, while in general advocating reducing federal spending on foreign assistance.

 

“Place sanctions on the top 10 Ukrainian oligarchs,especially the ones with mansions in Monaco, and this will stop immediately. That is the key to the puzzle,” Musk wrote in response to a post by Senator Mike Lee, who called for the US to halt financial aid to Kiev. Musk did not elaborate on how exactly such a move would impact the conflict.

 

According to the news outlet Ukrainian Focus, as of September 2024, topping the list of the country’s wealthiest people was Rinat Akhmetov, owner of industrial conglomerate SCM Group. He was followed by Interpipe Group owner Viktor Pinchuk, former President Petro Poroshenko, Dneprazot owner Igor Kolomoisky, and Ferrexpo owner Konstantin Zhevago.

 

Most of the above-listed individuals have contributed to Kiev’s war effort. Poroshenko and Pinchuk are known to have supplied the Ukrainian army with drones and other equipment, while Akhmetov is behind a project that provides the military ammunition, transport, medical equipment and drones. He has reportedly spent the equivalent of some $274 million on the war effort in the past three years.

 

Musk’s suggestion sparked mixed reactions online. Some users questioned whether sanctioning Ukraine’s business elite would actually pressure Kiev to negotiate, noting that Ukraine mostly relies on Western funding. Others pointed out that just last month Kiev itself sanctioned several prominent businessmen, including Poroshenko, Kolomoisky, and Zhevago, which suggests a rift between them and the regime. While no reasons were given for the sanctions, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky had called for “blocking billions that were earned by essentially selling out Ukraine, Ukrainian interests, Ukrainian security” just a day before the sanctions announcement.

 

Musk’s remarks came amid a growing rift between Kiev and Washington following Zelensky’s recent trip to Washington during which a meeting he had with US President Donald Trump at the White House turned heated and the planned signing of a minerals deal was put on hold. Shortly thereafter, the US suspended military aid and intelligence-sharing with Ukraine.

 

According to The Washington Post,Ukrainian officials, including Zelensky, now fear Trump may impose sanctions on Ukrainefollowing the Ukrainian leader’s recent ill-fated trip.

 

“All politicians in this country were discussing potential sanctions from the US side… A lot of people were very nervous, and the president was very nervous=,” an unnamed official told the newspaper. He added that Washington couldimpose sanctions by linking individuals in Zelensky’s inner circle to corruption, which would weaken Ukraine’s war effort and jeopardize its EU backing. The official did not specify whether Ukrainian oligarchs would be targeted.

Washington could potentially disable Berlin’s F-35 fighters, the report warns

 

German policymakers are growing increasingly concerned over the possibilitythat the US could remotely disable F-35 fighter jets being delivered to Berlinin the event of a crisis, mirroring its recent decision to freeze intelligence and military support to Ukraine, Bild reported on Saturday.

 

The German Air Force is set to receive 35 American-made F-35A Lightning II jets starting in 2026 as part of an €8.3 billion ($9 billion) deal. However, some German policymakers fear that US President Donald Trump, who has been at odds with the EU over a number of issues, could use a ‘kill switch’ to ground the aircraft if Washington and European capitals diverge in their approach to a potential conflict with Russia, the article said.

 

”The ‘kill switch’ in the F-35 is more than just a rumor,”Joachim Schranzhofer, the head of communications at German defense company Hensoldt, told Bild. “But it’s much easier to use the mission planning system – then the plane stays on the ground.”

 

Wolfgang Ischinger, the former president of the Munich Security Conference Foundation, questioned the fate of the contract. “If we have to fear that the US could do with future German F-35s what they are currently doing with Ukraine, we could consider terminating the contract,” he said, as quoted by the tabloid.

 

Similar fears about a kill switch on American jets were echoed by experts interviewed by the Financial Times.Defense analyst Richard Aboulafia remarked that while the existence of a kill switch has never been confirmed, “If you postulate the existence of something that can be done with a little bit of software code, it exists.”

 

Others, meanwhile, suggested that a kill switch would essentially be redundant due to the sophistication of modern fighter jets and dependence on the vendor. “Most European militaries depend heavily on the US for communications support, for electronic warfare support, and for ammunition resupply in any serious conflict,” Justin Bronk, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, told the FT.

 

The concerns about F-35s surfaced after the US froze military and intelligence support for Kievfollowing a spat between Trump and Vladimir Zelensky, during which the US president accused the Ukrainian leader of not wanting peace with Russia.

 

The F-35 program has been described as the most expensive military project in history, with total projected costs exceeding $1.7 trillion over its lifetime. Since the first F-35 made its maiden flight in 2006, the program has been plagued by cost overruns, delays, and reliability issues. So far, more than 1,100 have been produced, with many supplied to US allies.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has claimed that his Starlink satellite internet service cannot operate in South Africa because he is “not black.

South African officials fired back, insisting that the issue has nothing to do with Musk’s race.

Musk, who was born in Pretoria but mainly resides in the US, made the comments on Friday in reaction to a podcast featuring South African businessman Rob Hersov. In a snippet shared online, claimed that “race-based laws in South Africa are all anti-white,” and argued that the country hasbeen “infected… with an evil woke mind virus.”

 

“Starlink is not allowed to operate in South Africa, because I’m not black,” Musk wrote on X.

Consider this an escalation once President Trump is briefed. Overnight, someone, claimed by media to be Ukraine, launched a targeted series of drone attacks against the KINEF oil refinery in the Leningrad region of Russia.

 

The refinery is approximately 800 to 1,000 kilometers from where western intelligence operators are assembled to support Ukraine.This distance means someone within NATO has violated President Trump’s order to withdraw ‘long-range’ targeting system operation, and/or someone within NATO has provided an alternative. When President Trump stopped “intelligence sharing” with Ukraine, what he technically did was stop allowing Ukraine to use exclusive USA targeting systems controlled by U.S Intelligence, the CIA, the National Reconnaissance Office and the U.S. National Geospatial Intelligence Agency.

 

These terrain mapping systems, the missile and drone targeting systems, are what military forces inside Ukraine need to carry out offensive drone and missile attacks against Russian forces. However, two drones were launched on the night of Saturday March 8th and were shot down as they approached the KINEF refinery, damaging one external oil tank.

 

Who launched them, and what targeting system was used?

“The UAV attack on KINEF in the Kirishi district has been repelled. Air defense forces shot down one drone on approach, and the other was destroyed over the plant’s territory,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.

 

According to the governor, the debris from the downed drone damaged the external structure of one of the tanks. There were no reported casualties.

Cyclones at Jupiter's North Pole

 

Why are there so many cyclones around the north pole of Jupiter? The topic is still being researched. NASA's robotic Juno mission orbiting Jupiter took data in 2018 that was used to construct this stunning view of the curious cyclones at Jupiter's north pole. Measuring the thermal emission from Jovian cloud tops, the infrared observations are not restricted to the hemisphere illuminated by sunlight. They reveal eight cyclonic features that surround a cyclone about 4,000 kilometers in diameter, just offset from the giant planet's geographic north pole. Similar data show a cyclone at the Jovian south pole with five circumpolar cyclones. The south pole cyclones are slightly larger than their northern cousins. Oddly, data from the once Saturn-orbiting Cassini mission has shown that Saturn's north and south poles each have only a single cyclonic storm system.

How Russia Helped The 13 Colonies Win The American Revolution

 

On Independence Day, celebrated on July 4th, Americans reflect on their nation’s history as it came into existence in 1776. The American Revolutionary War began more than a year before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but it was fought over eight years and resulted in tens of thousands of casualties. The United States was formed in a world dominated by great empires such as Great Britain, France, Russia, and Turkey. Unbeknownst to many people – even history aficionados – is that the Russian Empire played an important – yet indirect – role in furthering the American cause.

 

According to many scholars, Catherine II empathized with the colonists, and the common attitude among aristocrats in Saint Petersburg was that “the state of the English court and ministry was not such as to inspire national or outside trust toward them.” She had long predicted that America would become independent of Europe “even in my lifetime.” When the war broke out, she exclaimed that “the colonies have told England goodbye forever.” In her private correspondence, she did not hesitate to blame George III for provoking a meaningless quarrel and urged England to reconcile with the colonies.

 

Catherine II chose not to openly pick a side in the war. The Russian Empire did not recognize the United States as a sovereign nation until the war ended. In 1780, her foreign minister, Count Nikita Panin, issued a Declaration of Armed Neutrality, which officially declared the Russian Empire’s nonalignment in the Revolutionary War. Nonetheless, the empress unofficially exercised favoritism toward the colonies by trading with them, giving them enough optimism to continue their fight, and eventually trying to serve as a mediator between America and Great Britain – all without compromising Russia’s neutral stance. Through diplomacy and commerce, Catherine II was able to influence the course of the war.

 

Russia started trading with the colonies over a decade before the Revolution. Americans and Russians saw each other as excellent trade partners, having ample resources to offer each other. Despite Great Britain’s Navigation Acts, which restricted foreign trade directly with the colonies, Russian ships began delivering products like hemp, sail linen, and iron to American ports as early as 1763 and did not stop once the war began. Catherine II believed that an independent America would further Russian business interests, allowing America to trade with the Russian Empire without interference from Britain on the high seas. Continued trade with Russia during the war provided the colonies with a market for their goods as well as the funds and supplies they needed to survive.

U.S. Secret Service Shoots Armed Man Near White House After Confrontation

An adult male brandishing a firearm was shot by U.S.Secret Service officers near the White House in Washington, DC, shortly after midnight on Sunday.

 

The agency said the encounter happened near the intersection of 17th and F Streets NW.

 

NPR reports local police had earlier reported a “suicidal individual” possibly traveling to D.C. from Indiana, the agency added.

 

Secret Service personnel located the individual’s vehicle and spotted a person on foot who matched the description.

 

“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued,during which shots were fired by our personnel,” the Secret Service detailed in a statement shared on X by spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

 

The full statement by the Secret Service is below:

 

“On Sunday March 9th, an adult male was shot by U.S. Secret Service personnel following an armed confrontation with law enforcement in Washington DC.

 

Earlier on Saturday, local police shared information about a suicidal individual who may be traveling to Washington DC from Indiana. Around midnight, members of the Secret Service encountered the individual’s parked vehicle near 17th and F Streets, NW. They also saw an individual on foot matching the description nearby.

 

As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel.

 

The suspect was transported to an area hospital and his condition is unknown. There were no reported injuries to Secret Service personnel.

 

The incident is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer involved shootings in the District of Columbia.”

 

President Donald Trump was at his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, at the time of the shooting, which occurred just one block away from the White House.

 

The condition of the suspect is currently unknown.

 

The Metropolitan Police Department will investigate because the shooting involved law enforcement officers.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is deleting her text messages,thus defeating efforts by media organizations to obtain them as government communications subject to public records requests, according to the Los Angeles Times.

 

The Times reported that ithad been unable to obtain Bass’s text messages concerning her overseas trip to Ghana, during which the L.A. fires broke out, because they were automatically deleted and the city had not retained them.

 

The Times reported:

 

She and her office have said she was in constant communication during that period. But it’s impossible to know exactly what she was communicating, because her messages were not saved, according to a city lawyer.

 

“Her phone is set not to save text messages,” said the lawyer, David Michaelson.

 

Michaelson said that there is “no requirement that a city official or employee save text messages,” despite the fact that the city’s own document retention policies dictate that most records should be kept for at least two years.

 

The Times suggests that Bass is violating both state law and the city’s own administrative code.

 

Breitbart News has written to the office of Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman to ask whether he intends to investigate or pursue legal action against the mayor over her text messages.

Hubble Unveils a Glittering View of Sh2-284

A tiny fraction of the stellar nursery known as Sh2-284 is visible in this glittering, star-filled NASA Hubble Space Telescope image.

This immense region of gas and dust is the birthing place of stars, which shine among the clouds.

Bright clusters of newborn stars glow pink in infrared light, and clouds of gas and dust, resembling puffy cumulus clouds, are dotted with dark knots of denser dust.

 

This image shows an infrared view from Hubble, giving an excellent view of the stars that might otherwise be obscured by Sh2-284’s clouds.

Unlike visible light, infrared wavelengths can travel through clouds of gas and dust, providing a glimpse of the stars forming within the obscuring clouds.

 

The nebula is shaped by a young central star cluster, Dolidze 25 (not visible in the Hubble image), whose stars range from 1.5 to 13 million years old (our Sun, in contrast, is 4.6 billion years old).

The cluster blasts out ionizing winds and radiation, pushing at the gas and dust of the nebula and carving out intricate shapes and pillars, as seen in detail here.

This ionizing radiation gives Sh2-284 its classification as an HII region, an emission nebula consisting primarily of ionized hydrogen.

An emission nebula like Sh2-284 glows with its own light as stars within or nearby energize its gas with a flood of intense ultraviolet radiation.

 

Sh2-284 is also a low-metallicity region, which means it is poor in elements heavier than hydrogen and helium.

These conditions mimic the early universe, when matter was mostly helium and hydrogen and heavier elements were just beginning to form via nuclear fusion within massive stars.

Hubble took these images as part of an effort to examine how low metallicity influences stellar formation and how this would apply to the early universe.

 

Sh2-284 resides 15,000 light-years away at the end of an outer spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy, in the constellation Monoceros.

Hubble Jams With A Cosmic Guitar

Arp 105 is a dazzling ongoing merger between an elliptical galaxy and a spiral galaxy drawn together by gravity, characterized by a long, drawn out tidal tail of stars and gas more than 362,000 light-years long.

The immense tail, which extends beyond this image from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, was pulled from the two galaxies by their gravitational interactions and is embedded with star clusters and dwarf galaxies.

The distinctively shaped arrangement of galaxies and tail gives the grouping its nickname: The Guitar.

 

The gravitational dance between elliptical galaxy NGC 3561B and spiral galaxy NGC 3561A creates a wealth of fascinating colliding galaxy features.

A long lane of dark dust emerging from the elliptical galaxy ends in, and may be feeding, a bright blue area of star formation on the base of the guitar known as Ambartsumian’s Knot.

Ambartsumian’s Knot is a tidal dwarf galaxy, a type of star-forming system that develops from the debris in tidal arms of interacting galaxies.

 

Two more bright blue areas of star formation are obvious in the Hubble image at the edges of the distorted spiral galaxy.

The region to the left in the spiral galaxy is likely very similar to Ambartsumian’s Knot, a knot of intense star formation triggered by the merger.

The region to the right is still under investigation ― it could be part of the collision, but its velocity and spectral data (indicating distance) are different from the rest of the system, so it may be a foreground galaxy.

 

Thin, faint tendrils of gas and dust are just barely visible stretching between and connecting the two galaxies.

These tendrils are particularly interesting to astronomers since they may help define the timescale of the evolution of this collision.

 

A multitude of more-distant background galaxies are visible around and even through this merging duo.

The bright blue blob of stars to the left of Ambartsumian’s Knot may be a particularly bright background galaxy.

 

Arp 105 is one of the brightest objects in the crowded galaxy cluster Abell 1185 in the constellation Ursa Major.

Abell 1185, located around 400 million light-years away, is a chaotic cluster of at least 82 galaxies, many of which are interacting, as well as a number of wandering globular clusters that are not gravitationally attached to any particular galaxy.

This Hubble image was taken as part of a study of the ongoing creation of galactic and intergalactic stellar populations in Abell 1185.

On Friday’s broadcast of NewsNation’s “On Balance,” Rep. Jennifer McClellan (D-VA) claimed that the “only way” to enforce bans on biological men in women’s sports is for “people in schools to pull children’s pants down to determine what sex they are.”

 

Host Leland Vittert asked how Democrats can say they’re a big tent who are in touch with America when no Democrats in the Senate voted to ban biological men from women’s sports.

 

McClellan answered, “I don’t think that the American people want school professionals pulling their children’s pants down to determine what sports team they should play on.”

 

After Vittert responded, “Oh, come on.” McClellan stated, “No, how do you enforce that bill? If you read the bill, the — how do you enforce it?”

 

Vittert responded, “You know what sex is on someone’s birth certificate. … It’s a completely false talking point.”

 

McClellan responded, “It is not a false talking point. You don’t want to accept it. We can move on to something else. But the only way to enforce that bill, in many cases, it allowed people in schools to pull children’s pants down to determine what sex they are.”

 

Both the House versions of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which McClellan voted against, and the Senate version that Democrats filibustered explicitly state that “sex shall be recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”

Hubble Spies a Spectacular Starburst Galaxy

Sweeping spiral arms extend from NGC 4536, littered with bright blue clusters of star formation and red clumps of hydrogen gas shining among dark lanes of dust.

The galaxy’s shape may seem a little unusual, and that’s because it’s what’s known as an “intermediate galaxy”: not quite a barred spiral, but not exactly an unbarred spiral, either ― a hybrid of the two.

 

NGC 4536 is also a starburst galaxy, in which star formation is happening at a tremendous rate that uses up the gas in the galaxy relatively quickly, by galactic standards.

Starburst galaxies can happen due to gravitational interactions with other galaxies or ― as seems to be the case for NGC 4536 ― when gas is packed into a small region.

The bar-like structure of NGC 4536 may be driving gas inwards toward the nucleus, giving rise to a crescendo of star formation in a ring around the nucleus.

Starburst galaxies birth lots of hot blue stars that burn fast and die quickly in explosions that unleash intense ultraviolet light (visible in blue), turning their surroundings into glowing clouds of ionized hydrogen, called HII regions (visible in red).

 

NGC 4536 is approximately 50 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. It was discovered in 1784 by astronomer William Herschel.

Hubble took this image of NGC 4536 as part of a project to study galactic environments to understand connections between young stars and cold gas, particularly star clusters and molecular clouds, throughout the local universe.

Ex-Georgia House Rep. Stacey Abrams said this week that she received $2 billion from Former President Joe Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to greenwash home appliances in what some have likened to an alleged Democratic “vote buying” scheme.

 

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin recently revealed that the Biden-era EPA passed through $20 billion in “gold bars,” or grants, to leftist groups. The Abrams-linked Power Forward Communities received $2 billion as part of these grants, a sum amounting to “20 million times the organization’s reported revenue,” according to the EPA.

 

“Stacey Abrams’ Power Forward Communities received $2 BILLION to be a pass through entity for Biden EPA’s $20 billion ‘gold bar’ scheme,” Zeldin wrote in an X post in mid-February. “They reported just $100 in total revenue after their founding in late 2023.”

 

Abrams — a Democrat who infamously lost two Georgia gubernatorial runs — took to MSNBC in early March to claim that there was nothing nefarious about Power Forward Communities receiving billions of dollars in taxpayer funds.

 

“In 2023 and 2024, I led a program called Revitalizing Desoto,” she told the network, explaining that she worked to help those in South Georgia replace their inefficient appliances with more energy-efficient models.

 

Abrams said that based on the success of this endeavor, a coalition of organizations came together to “let us invest the money of America to lower the cost of Americans.”

 

Steve Milloy, who served on President Donald Trump’s first-term EPA transition team, described the Abrams-linked “grift” as a “vote buying” ploy akin to the Obama-era “Obama phones.”

 

“The EPA-Stacey Abrams grift revealed: @staceyabrams just told MSBNC’s @chrislhayes that the Biden EPA gave her $2 billion to buy people new home appliances to reduce electric bills. So Democrats upgraded vote buying from Obama phones to Biden refrigerators,” Milloy wrote on X.

Calling all designers: NASA wants your ideas for a plush mascot that will fly with astronauts around the moon next year.

The space agency is holding a contest for the “zero gravity indicator” that will be carried aboard the Artemis II mission, due to launch in April 2026.

A “zero gravity indicator” is a small, plush item that gives a visual indication – by floating – of when a spacecraft reaches space.

 

Many past missions to the International Space Station have included a plush zero gravity indicator, according to NASA.

A plush Snoopy mascot rode inside the Orion capsule during the uncrewed Artemis I mission in 2022.

 

Original designs, which are due by May 27, should “represent the significance of NASA’s Artemis campaign, the mission, or exploration and discovery,” according to the space agency.

There are specific requirements for materials and size, which can be reviewed on the contest website. Up to 25 finalists, including from a K-12 student division, will be selected.

The Artemis II crew will choose one design that NASA’s Thermal Blanket Lab will then fabricate to fly alongside them in the Orion spacecraft.

 

Crowdsourcing company Freelancer is hosting the challenge, called Moon Mascot: NASA Artemis II ZGI Design Contest, on behalf of the agency through the NASA Tournament Lab.

Artemis II will be the first test flight of the Space Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft, and supporting ground system with crew aboard.

 

The 10-day mission will see NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen venture around the moon and back to Earth.

The mission is the first crewed flight under NASA’s Artemis campaign, which is designed to establish a permanent human presence on the lunar surface as a steppingstone to future crewed missions to Mars.

he White House and the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency have spent the first weeks of Donald Trump’s new administration looking to reduce the number of federal workers and shrink spending.

The cuts have followed roughly the same formula from agency to agency. What does that mean for space?

It’s challenging to track every corner of the federal workforce that works on space, making it difficult to determine exactly how many jobs have been lost.

 

Below are the latest developments for each department, including what we don’t know. SpaceNews reporters are on Signal and welcome tips.

 

National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Total number of employees: ~18,000

Were employees offered the deferred resignation program or did they receive the so-called “fork in the road” email?

Yes. NASA officials have said about 5% of employees have accepted the offer. That would translate to roughly 900 positions.

Were there probationary layoffs? Layoffs of probationary employees have been deferred for now. Roughly 1,000 employees were thought to be part of the cut.

Notes: NASA leaders are developing plans for a larger reduction in force as part of Trump’s vision to shrink the federal workforce.

The Planetary Society, an advocacy group, has estimated that the 10% cut would be the largest single reduction in force at the agency since the end of the Apollo program more than a half-century ago.

 

Department of Defense

Total number of civilian employees: +700,000

Total number of civilian employees in the Space Force: ~5,600

Were employees offered the deferred resignation program or did they receive the so-called “fork in the road” email?

Yes. Specifically, the Department of the Air Force, which oversees the Air Force and Space Force, sent the email to employees Feb. 28. Pentagon officials have not disclosed how many employees accepted the offer thus far.

Were there probationary layoffs? Not yet. But some officials have said those could begin before the end of March.

Notes: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has told Pentagon officials to plan for a 7% reduction of budget and a senior Pentagon official has said to anticipate a reduction of the Department’s civilian workforce by 5-8% to produce efficiencies.

It is unclear how many of those employees will work for the Space Force or on space programs.

Specifics: The head of Space Systems Command, the Space Force’s primary acquisition arm, said March 4 that the office “had a considerable number” of employees apply for the deferred resignation program.

He expected those employees to leave soon, according to Defense News.

“I can tell you, I think we got into a ditch with the very first meeting in Mar-a-Lago. I’ve seen the president reference many times since then the exchange–I think two blunders:One was the on the issue of NATO,” she said. “We know the American president expects for all of the trade partners to reachtheir two percent NATOcommitment, andCanada still hasn’t committed to doing that until 2032, so I think that was one problem.

 

And then, yes…he said that tariffs would result in Canada collapsing, and I think that was the wrong message to convey because it made us sound very, very weak.”

 

Smith added that Canada’s dependence on trade with the United States is “mutually beneficial.”

 

“I mean, we are definitely dependent on U.S. trade… We certainly have more dependence on U.S. trade than in any other market, but it’s mutually beneficial,” she said. “And I wish that we’d been able to convey earlier on just how much the Americans benefit from being able to buy cheap and discounted raw materials and intermediate products so they can do thevalue added to create American jobsand also keep prices lower for consumers.”

 

“That’s the partnership that we have. And Canada, in exchange, also becomes the principal buyer of American-produced products. We’re your biggest customers,” she added.

 

“So I think that we started off on the wrong foot, and now we’ve been trying to get that information outbecause we really should maintain this tariff-free relationshipbetween our two countries. Our industries are so integrated, and it’s good for both partners.”

The New York Times reported approximately 500 people took that offer and left the agency Feb. 28. It is unclear how many of them worked on space programs.

Were there probationary layoffs? Yes. CBS News reported that about 880 people were fired Feb. 27. It is unclear how many of them worked on space programs.

Specifics: Layoffs at the Office of Space Commerce within NOAA Feb. 27 included staff working on the Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS) and in the Commercial Remote Sensing Regulatory Affairs Division, which oversees commercial imaging satellite licensing.

TraCSS is set to take over space traffic coordination from the Defense Department. The cuts, which affected as many as a quarter of the office’s 60-person staff, are expected to disrupt programs, a former NOAA official said.

However, by March 4, two senior leaders, the TraCSS program manager and a division director, had been reinstated after industry groups raised concerns with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

 

National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency

Total number of employees: ~14,500

Were employees offered the deferred resignation program or did they receive the so-called “fork in the road” email? Yes.

Were there probationary layoffs? None have been reported thus far.

Notes: There was confusion at NGA — a U.S. intelligence agency that analyzes geospatial data for the U.S. military, allies and homeland security organizations — because many employees believed their role in national security made them exempt from the hiring freeze announced Jan. 20 and from subsequent layoffs.

 

National Reconnaissance Office

Total number of employees: ~3,000

“I can hardly believe I’m saying this, but given the ongoing threat of an unprovoked trade war against Canada by the US president, I do not feel I can enter the United States,” Penny announced via a Facebook post, “at least not until that economic sword, that could throw hundreds of thousands of Canadians (as well as Americans) into poverty, is removed completely.”

 

Penny, professing her Canadian pride and solidarity with Canadians’ economic interests, nonetheless had scheduled her latest book launch not inside her native country but in the more lucrative U.S.

When asked by host Matthew Boyle about his views on how Trump was doing so far and how Trump was “leading the presidency like a CEO,”Schnatter explained that Trump has “institutional knowledge” about how Washington, D.C. works, and how it doesn’t. Schnatter added that while some elected officials “don’t understand they serve at the pleasure of the public,”Trump “has the mindset that anything that’s government is suspect and inefficient.”

 

“What he learned from 2016 to 2020 — the institutional knowledge that he has, is unique. That experience of learning how D.C. works, and of course how it doesn’t work. But, he knows what levers to hit, when to hit them, and how hard to hit them.He’s a unique guy the way he’s hardwired,” Schnatter explained.

 

“He’s just the perfect guy to do what we need — which is drain the swamp. This is a turnaround situation, if you were CEO. In this country, in this — the bureaucratic nonsense is, it’s ingrained and it’s embedded in government in D.C. And we now have the tail wagging the dog, where people in government, they think we work for them. They don’t understand, they serve at the pleasure of the public. And Trump — everything starts at the top, and it’s all a mindset. Trump has the mindset that anything that’s government is suspect and probably inefficient, and he’s cutting that out.”

 

When Boyle brought up a recent New York Timesarticle that claimed Elon Musk and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had butted heads during a cabinet meeting, and how Trump stepped in and made a decision to support Rubio, =Schnatter explained that he hopes that cabinet members are “challenging each other.”==

 

Schnatter explained that if people aren’t challenging each other, “you’re not going to come up with the best answers.”

 

“If you look at the continental Congress and the framers, 34 out of 38 were businessmen. Merchants, shippers, small business owners, farmers, they understood commonsense. They understood arithmetic is not an opinion.They understood human nature of both good and bad. But, in this case, you have to look at the source. The New York Times is fake news, they’re fraudulent. This is real simple — it’s called collaborative confrontation. Walt Disney called it positive discontent, dynamic discontent. At the end of the line — when you have a strong cabinet, if you don’t have, if you’re not challenging my judgement and I’m not challenging your judgement, you’re not going to come up with the best answers,” Schnatter added.

 

“I hope, as strong minded as those cabinet members are, I hope they’re challenging each other. I hope they’re not getting along. But, at the end of the day, under Trump’s leadership, they’re going to agree to disagree, they’re going to challenge each other, they’re going to make each other better, they’re going to come out with the best solution.And Trump’s going to say, ‘Okay, that’s the drum we’re marching to’ and trust it. S.F. police shoot man who purportedly shot at SFPD drone, officers

In a possible first, a suspect in the Outer Sunset today fired upon a San Francisco police drone — and, later, at officers — before police returned fire and sent him to the hospital with a non-life-threatening gun wound.

The incident may be the first instance of a San Francisco Police Department drone being fired upon — the department only began using drones last year. It is unclear if the drone was hit.

 

At 4:32 p.m. on Saturday, officers had been called out to 41st Avenue between Lincoln Way and Irving Street responding to a man armed with a gun who was “threatening neighbors,” according to the San Francisco Police Department.

It’s unclear how exactly the shooting occurred, but the department said the man fired his gun first.

Officers “attempted to make contact with the armed subject,” the department wrote, and “during the encounter, the subject discharged his firearm and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

 

The man was “struck by gunfire,” the department wrote, and officers subsequently rendered aid before paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital. It is unclear how many officers took part in the shooting.

The incident is being investigated by the San Francisco district attorney’s office, the Investigative Services Detail of SFPD, and the Department of Police Accountability.

SFPD will hold a town hall within 10 days of the shooting, as legally required, to present the circumstances that led to it.

Russian forces liberate Constantinople – MOD (VIDEO)

The Russian military has gained control over Constantinople in the Donetsk People’s Republic, the Defense Ministry in Moscow stated on Sunday.

 

It posted a video on Telegram showing Russian troops raising the flag over the recently liberated village. Ukraine lost more than 50 troops in the fighting, according to the MOD.

 

The settlement was named after the capital of the Byzantine Empire by Greek settlers from Crimea who founded the village in the 18th century.=

House Republicans launched an investigation on Monday into the efforts of a prominent youth transgender medicine physician to withhold results from a federally funded study on the mental health effects of puberty blockers for political reasons.

Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy, medical director for the Center for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, said she was delaying publication of the results from a multiyear study funded by the National Institutes of Health for fear that her findings could be used by critics of transgender medicine for minors.

Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI), chairwoman of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Healthcare and Financial Services, sent a letter to NIH Director Monica Bertagnolli regarding the status of the trans youth care, or TYC, study conducted by Olson-Kennedy with a $9.7 million NIH grant.

“NIH is responsible for overseeing its extramural research projects to ensure supported researchers practice transparency, exemplify scientific integrity, and are proper stewards of taxpayer funds,” McClain wrote, requesting that Bertagnolli provide all documents regarding the TYC study by Nov. 18.

Olson-Kennedy told the New York Times in an interview that early findings of her longitudinal study showed that puberty blocker treatments for adolescents with gender dysphoria did not lead to mental health improvements. She claimed that the children didn’t show major improvements because they were doing well when the study began.

“They’re in really good shape when they come in, and they’re in really good shape after two years,” Olson-Kennedy said, adding that she did “not want [her] work to be weaponized.”

McClain’s letter to Bertagnolli highlights that the results Olson-Kennedy shared with the New York Times are significantly different than the paper she authored in 2020, funded by the NIH, that said the cohort of 95 children involved in the study did experience adverse mental health symptoms at the beginning of the experiment.

“Dr. Olson-Kennedy’s apparent mischaracterization of the TYC study’s results and refusal to publish taxpayer-funded research because they contradict her pre-existing biases and could be cited by critics of ‘gender-affirming’ medical interventions is an irrefutable example of politicization of scientific research to further an ideological agenda,” McClain wrote to Bertagnolli.

Under Olson-Kennedy’s leadership, the Center for Transyouth Health and Development prescribed 103 minor patients with cross-sex hormones or puberty blockers and performed 165 cross-sex surgical procedures on minors, according to insurance billing records published by the medical advocacy group Do No Harm.

The Center for Transyouth Health and Development has not responded to the Washington Examiner’s request for an interview with Olson-Kennedy.

McClain’s subcommittee is not the only one in the House to be investigating the reasons why the results of the TYC study have been withheld.

House Energy and Commerce Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) told reporters that her committee would also begin to investigate the Olson-Kennedy study as a “clear example of the politicization of science at the expense of children.”

“Research funded by taxpayer dollars through the NIH should be publicly disclosed regardless of the results, and Americans deserve access to the truth,” Rodgers said.

The House Oversight Committee launched an investigation in August into pressure put on professional medical organizations from key players in the Biden administration to loosen age restrictions on transgender surgeries for minors, such as double mastectomy and vaginoplasty.

Party in EU state criticizes Russia sanctions

The Slovak National Party has argued that the restrictions are detrimental to the country’s economy

 

The Slovak National Party (SNS), a member of the ruling coalition,has announced plans to introduce a parliamentary resolution rejecting further sanctions against Russia, arguing the restrictions are negatively affecting Slovakia’s own economy.

 

The party, which holds 10 out of the 150 seats in the national parliament, stated that the sanctions against Russia were negatively impacting the standard of living in Slovakia. “Sanctions take more from us than they give,” party leader Andrej Danko has said, as cited by the local media. “The result is rising energy prices, loss of competitiveness of our businesses, and deepening economic uncertainty.”

 

The SNS called the restrictions ineffective, adding that thenew EU sanctions package introduced in February is already pushing the prices of gas and aluminum higher. “It is unacceptable that Slovak households and businesses bearthe economic consequences of decisions that were taken without a thorough assessment of their impact on the national economy,” Danko said.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has repeatedly voiced skepticism over Western support for Ukraine, declaring that Bratislava wouldn't provide military or financial assistance to Kiev and advocating for an immediate ceasefire.

PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT Transgender children and adolescents are a poorly understood and a distinctly understudied population in the United States. The limited available data suggest that youth with gender dysphoria are at increased risk for negative mental and medical health outcomes including anxiety, depression, HIV acquisition, suicide, and substance use compared to their peers. Therefore, medical intervention is aimed at alleviating gender dysphoria and ameliorating potential negative outcomes. In 2011, the Institute of Medicine called for research to understand and improve the lives of gender minority populations. In 2015, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles/USC, Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Benioff Children’s Hospitals/UCSF and Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago/Northwestern University were awarded NIH grant R01HD082554 to develop and implement a multidisciplinary, prospective, observational study: The Impact of Early Medical Treatment in Transgender Youth (TYC). The original aims were to examine physiological and psychosocial effects of medical intervention for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth with gender dysphoria observed for 24-months. To date, TYC has successfully recruited beyond its targeted baseline sample in two cohorts: (i) 95 youth initiating pubertal suppression with gonadotropin releasing hormone analogs (GnRHa) along with one parent/guardian (n=95), as well as (ii) 316 youth initiating gender-affirming hormone (GAH) therapy (testosterone or estrogen). Early results have demonstrated a positive trend regarding mental health response to gender affirming interventions. The primary objective of this observational, longitudinal, multicenter renewal study is to evaluate the longer-term physiological and psychological impact of existing medical treatment protocols initiated in adolescence on youth with gender dysphoria for up to an additional 4 years. A second objective is to enhance the diversity and size of existing cohorts by enrolling additional youth of color (YOC) into both cohorts (n=89) and enroll additional assigned males at birth specifically into the GAH cohort (n=110). The final objective is to add measurements of psychosocial variables required to answer new questions posed in this renewal application. A key feature of the renewal period is that most individuals in the original GnRHa cohort will be starting GAH treatment. By examining outcomes of TGD youth who initiated GAH treatment with and without histories of puberty suppression, TYC will be well positioned to examine key questions about the sequencing of puberty suppression and GAH treatment on health outcomes. Continuing our current research is imperative to expand the scant evidence-base currently guiding the clinical care of TGD youth and thus, is of considerable public health significance. Results from this study have the potential to significantly impact services provided to TGD youth in the U.S. by making available rigorous scientific evidence outlining the longer-term impact and safety of early treatments based on pubertal development stage.

Incredible drone images reveal scale of devastation caused by Ventnor rockfall

THE full scale of a major rockfall in Ventnor has been captured by drone images

Thanks to Steve Mew, a member of the Isle of Wight County Press Camera Club, who flew his drone over the site, we now able to see how extensive Friday night's massive rockfall was.

 

The pictures reveal the damage, which saw heavy metal bollards flattened, and metal railings buckled under the avalanche of rock, which cascaded onto Belgrave road.

A ONCE iconic landmark on the Isle of Wight — Ventnor Rock — which collapsed this weekend, once featured on postcards.

 

The unusual geological feature on Belgrave Road, at the junction with Church Road, fell away on Friday night (March 7).

Also known locally as 'The Outcrop', it was so well known, it was once the subject of a postcard.

 

Sophie Blake, who owns the Longshoreman Museum on Ventnor seafront, kindly supplied the featured photo of 'Ventnor Rock', believed to be circa 1920s.

It pre-dates the building of the former Rex cinema, opened in 1938, which would have been visible on the photo if the image had been taken at that time.

The Rex was destroyed by fire in 1993.

 

'Ventnor Rock' may even have been a popular feature for Victorian visitors, almost two centuries ago.

Sophie lives on Esplanade Road, which is directly below the rock.

The first of the three linked attempts to kill the president that fall was uncovered in late October, when an informant tipped the Secret Service about a plot to shoot him in Chicago.

 

It would be carried out by what the source described as 'Right-wing paramilitary fanatics'.

 

Kennedy had been scheduled to arrive at Chicago's O'Hare Airport on Saturday November 2 to attend the annual Army–Air Force football game at Soldier Field.

 

According to the informant, four sharpshooters would be hidden along the route of the motorcade as it made its way to the stadium.

 

But the Chicago branch of the Secret Service foiled the plot, found four rifles with telescopic sights inside a rented apartment and took two of four suspects into custody. Kennedy's trip was cancelled in response.

 

The two suspects were then released – but we have never been told why.

 

What we do know is someone else was slated in to take the fall – not the four snipers.

 

The echoes of Lee Harvey Oswald – who was charged with Kennedy's assassination in Dallas but claimed he was a 'patsy' – seem clear.

 

The name of the man in the Chicago plot was Thomas Arthur Vallee, a Korean War veteran.

 

Two months earlier, as Oswald was about to move from New Orleans to Dallas – where he got a job in a building overlooking the route of the presidential motorcade – Vallee landed a job as a printer in another tall building that overlooked Kenndy's planned route to Soldier Field.

 

Like Oswald, Vallee had connections with the secret services and with Cuban exiles. And, from his window at work, he would have had a view of the presidential limousine that was three levels lower and ten times better than Oswald's view from the Dallas School Book Depository.

 

There is another strange parallel: the motorcade in Chicago was scheduled to make a sharp turn right in front of Vallee's building, thereby slowing Kennedy's car to a crawl – a quirk of planning repeated in Dallas with fatal consequences.

 

The second attempt on Kennedy's life, in Tampa, was planned for later in the month.

 

It might seem curious that the three assassination attempts planned for Kennedy in November 1963 were in Chicago, Tampa and Dallas. But of course, these were cities under the control of Giancana, Trafficante and Marcello, three of Kennedy's most implacable Mafia opponents.

 

So, with Chicago and Tampa off the table, it had to be Dallas which, filled with his slot machines and duke boxes, happened to be the most important city in Mafia don Carlos Marcello's invisible empire.

 

What's certain, is this: from November 9 onwards, the FBI and the Secret Service not only knew of a serious plot to assassinate Kennedy, but exactly how it would be carried out. Yet still the trip to Dallas went ahead.

 

On the morning of Monday November 18, 62-year-old Forrest Sorrels, the man in charge of the Secret Service detail in the city, was instructed by a superior to make a slight but important change to the route of Kennedy's motorcade.

 

Having turned right on to Dealey Plaza, it would now make an abrupt left turn, a tweak that would dramatically reduce the speed of the president's limousine between the Texas School Book Depository building – where Oswald worked – and a stockade fence at the top of a grassy knoll peering down on to the plaza.

 

Agent Sorrels was informed of the change by Agent Winston Lawson, who, in turn, got it from Washington. It may be that it made it easier to access the Stemmons Freeway, arguably the fastest route to JFK's next event being held at the International Trade Mart, though the change surprised many on the ground, not least because it would later emerge that it placed the President in a perfect kill zone.

Justin Trudeau was reduced to tears at a press conference on Thursday night, after reports of a profanity-laden phone call with Donald Trump.

 

The Canadian prime minister welled up in what was one of his last public appearances as leader, as he urged the nation to “stand up against the trading partner that is much bigger than us”.

 

Following a week of warring with the US president over tariffs, the two leaders spoke for 50 minutes on Wednesday, in a call that Mr Trudeau described as “colourful”.

 

In fact, it appears that Mr Trump used profane language multiple times while berating Mr Trudeau in what was described by the Wall Street Journal as a “heated” exchange.

 

Mr Trump has spent months mocking the Canadian prime minister, calling him “Governor Trudeau” and vowing to make the country America’s “51st state”.

 

Mr Trudeau said: “We want to continue to be strong and resolute in our response and we will continue to be there for each other because the unity that Canadians are feeling right now is actually the most important thing in being able to stand up against the trading partner that is much bigger than us.

 

“We are in a moment right now where Canada has a very, very strong bargaining position, because Canadians are so united and unequivocal about standing up for our country, standing up for our fellow citizens, and being very, very firm that this is an absolutely unjustified and unjustifiable trade war launched by the Americans, and that is what we’re going to continue.”

 

Tensions between the two countries reached breaking point on Tuesday when Mr Trump imposed 25 per cent tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada, plunging them into a full-blown trade war. Mr Trump has since rolled back the taxes on certain manufacturers, including car makers.

 

Mr Trudeau, who will officially give way to a new Liberal leader on Sunday, also cried when he announced his decision to step down in January.

 

Reflecting on 10 years in office in a press conference in Ottawa, Mr Trudeau said he had worked “every single day” to “put Canadians first”.

 

He said: “I have peoples’ backs and that’s why I’m here to tell you all that we got you, even in the last days of this government, we will not let Canadians down today and well into the future.”

 

The Canadian prime minister first became emotional when announcing one of his government’s last policies on childcare.

 

Mr Trudeau said: “Childcare is a matter of fairness. It strengthens our economy, makes it more resilient, and that’s never been as important as it is right now.”

 

His emotions also welled up as he reflected on events during his time in office.

 

He said: “I’ve had 10 years of Donald Trump, a historic once-in-a-century pandemic, inflation crises, war in Ukraine as Russia returns to war in Europe, as the Middle East is facing extraordinarily difficult situations.

 

“These have been complicated times. This is the job I signed up for. This is the job I will continue to do until the very last moment I’m doing this job.”..
