Speaker Mike Johnson is throwing his support behind Elon Musk following President Donald Trump’s tense closed-door meeting with his Cabinet, saying that the role of Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency is going through a “recalibration” and that Musk will correct his mistakes along the way.

“I think the president kind of did a recalibration yesterday. He brought in Elon and he brought in the Cabinet secretaries, and they had a dialogue about the process, to formalize more of this,” Johnson said in an interview Friday on Fox News.

When asked about his message to fired veterans across the country growing angry at Republicans over DOGE’s move fast and break things approach, Johnson said “we have to take care of our veterans.”

He defended Musk, saying “there’s no playbook” for DOGE and that the Tesla CEO and special adviser to Trump may have some mishaps that will be fixed.

That goes for the mass cuts to veteran jobs, Johnson said.

"Stay tuned, stay tuned, because it's gonna be corrected. And I've talked to Elon about this personally, and many of us have,” Johnson said. “And the essential employees and the people doing great work will come back."

A UCLA student is suing multiple California health care providers and hospitals for medical negligence, alleging she was wrongly diagnosed with gender dysphoria and then “fast-tracked onto the conveyor belt of irreversibly damaging” puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgery, according to her lawsuit.

Kaya Clementine Breen, 20, said she experienced sexual abuse as a young child, and by the time she was 11, she “began struggling with the thought of developing into a woman and began to believe that life would be easier if she were a boy,” according to her suit filed last week in Los Angeles County Superior Court. When she expressed this to her then-school counselor, the counselor told her “that she was transgender and called her parents to tell them the same.”

Breen, who was also suffering from anxiety, depression and undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the lawsuit, was then taken by her parents to the Center for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where she said she was diagnosed with gender dysphoria — the distress one can experience when their gender identity and birth sex are in conflict — and began to receive transition-related care at 12 years old

“This case is about a team of purported health care providers who collectively decided that a vulnerable girl struggling with complex mental health struggles and suffering from multiple instances of sexual abuse should be prescribed a series of life-altering puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, ultimately, receive a double mastectomy at the age of 14,” Breen’s lawsuit states.

Breen began receiving puberty-suppressing medication at 12, was prescribed cross-sex hormones from 13 to 19 and underwent a double mastectomy at 14, according to court documents, which stated that her “her mental health progressively declined” following these treatments.

In an interview with NBC News on Thursday, Breen said, “In retrospect, I wish that somebody had suggested real, genuine therapy first, instead of gender-specific therapy, because really the only therapy that I received until much later was specifically focused on gender dysphoria, and didn’t connect my gender dysphoria to anything else.”

Breen said she began to question her decision to transition after she started dialectical behavior therapy, a type of talk therapy that seeks to help those struggling with intense emotions, earlier this year.

“I sort of started questioning my own gender identity and if I was doing this for the right reasons,” she said.

The defendants in Breen’s lawsuit include Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy,an adolescent medicine physician specializing in gender-affirming care; Children’s Hospital Los Angeles;Dr. Scott Mosser, a plastic surgeon specializing in gender-affirming surgery; the Gender Confirmation Center of San Francisco; UCSF Health Community Hospitals; and psychotherapist Susan P. Landon.

When asked to comment on the lawsuit, a spokesperson said theCenter for Transyouth Health and Development at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where Olson-Kennedy works,has “provided high quality, age-appropriate, medically necessary care for more than 30 years.”

“Treatment is patient- and family-centered, following guidelines from professional organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and Endocrine Society. We do not comment on pending litigation; and out of respect for patient privacy and in compliance with state and federal laws, we do not comment on specific patients and/or their treatment,” the spokesperson said in an email, adding that“Dr. Olson-Kennedy is unavailable for comment.”

In response to a request for comment, a spokesperson for the Gender Confirmation Center in San Francisco, where Mosser works, said there’s “no such thing as a rubber stamp patient interaction” at their health facility.

“As healthcare providers, and in compliance with HIPAA considerations, we are unable to comment on specific protected health information or pending litigation,” the spokesperson added in their email, which also included a link to a statement from Mosser.

Mosser’s statement, which appears to have been posted to the Gender Confirmation Center’s website last week, applauded the center as being “at the forefront of gender-affirming surgery, with the wellbeing of our patients as our highest priority.”

“Our robust processes and protocols are designed to ensure that patients navigating our services fully understand the implications of the gender-affirming procedures they may choose to undergo as part of their transition,” Mosser stated. “We regularly hear from former patients sharing updates about the overwhelmingly positive impact these surgeries have had on their lives — messages that continue to arrive many years after their procedures.”

UCSF Health Community Hospitals, which is named in the lawsuit, told NBC News that Saint Francis Memorial Hospital, where Breen was a patient in 2019, was not acquired by UCSF until August of this year. It had no further comment.

Landon did not respond to a request for comment.

Breen said she doesn’t believe the individual health providers named in her lawsuit “intentionally acted in poor faith,” but she alleged they were dismissive of her pre-existing mental health issues.

When asked what she hopes to get from this lawsuit, Breen said she wants “some semblance of justice or change.” While she is seeking “financial reimbursement for the amount that this has cost me and my family,” she said, she most of all wants to “help dismantle the rumor that no one is ever fast-tracked into gender treatments.”

A long list of major U.S. medical associations — including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association — support transgender minors having access to transition-related care, like puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, and have denounced state laws restricting such care.

“There is strong consensus among the most prominent medical organizations worldwide that evidence-based, gender-affirming care for transgender children and adolescents is medically necessary and appropriate. It can even be lifesaving,” Dr. Moira Szilagyi wrote on the American Academy of Pediatrics website in August 2022, when she was the organization’s president. “The decision of whether and when to start gender-affirming treatment, which does not necessarily lead to hormone therapy or surgery, is personal and involves careful consideration by each patient and their family.”

Gender-affirming care for minors can look different depending on the child’s age and circumstances. For young children, care may involve a new name or pronoun as opposed to physical changes. At the onset of puberty, children may begin puberty blockers to inhibit them from developing secondary sex characteristics like breasts or facial hair. Hormone therapy may come next, which would allow the teenager to physically develop into the gender matching their identity. Surgical gender-affirming care is rarely performed on minors, and these procedures are illegal in dozens of states, though California is not among them.

Over the past few years, there have been several lawsuits filed in the U.S. and the U.K. by “detransitioners,” or those who transitioned genders and then transitioned back to their birth sex. A 21-year-old New York woman who had detransitioned sued Planned Parenthood and several individual health care providers in April claiming medical malpractice and a lack of informed consent, alleging the defendants rushed her into undergoing gender-affirming care when she was 18.

Research suggests that regretting treatment for gender dysphoria is “extremely rare,” according to the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, or WPATH. A survey conducted in 2015 by the National Center for Transgender Equality found that 8% of respondents detransitioned at some point in their life, with 62% of that group only detransitioning temporarily.

North Korea is a country famously shrouded in mystery, especially since it sealed itself off at the start of the Covid-19 outbreak, but one social media user claimed to get a unique insight into the nation with the help of a drone.

About a year before North Korea welcomed - and then promptly restricted - Western tourists from visiting for the first time in five years, one drone owner took to Reddit to claim they'd managed to fly their device over the border from China into North Korea.

They shared the images they'd caught online, alongside the caption: "Drone pics of North Korea, I was in China, my drone flew across the border."

The images are indeed taken from the high perspective of a drone flying over a metropolitan area, and they quickly caught the attention of intrigued users hoping to get an insight into the notoriously secretive region.

The post has received more than 145,000 upvotes, and features images of a large building which is decorated with pictures of Kim Il-sung, the founder of North Korea, as well as Kim Jong-il.

Users have noticed that the streets in the images appear to be eerily empty, especially for what looks to be a large city. It's unclear what time the images were captured, but it's clearly light outside.

In some of the images, people can even be seen on the ground looking up and pointing at the drone as it flies over.

Sharing their thoughts, one person wrote: “Am I tripping or is there no street drainage at all? Definitely no traffic lights. Looks like a concrete model of a city."

A second said: "It’s interesting how the uncanny valley exists for inanimate things as well. This is close enough to being an actual city that it’s disturbing."

Above all though, one of the most common responses to the images wasn't about their content at all, but about the person who captured them.

Reddit users pointed out the person controlling the drone could likely have got in serious trouble for infiltrating the border, with one writing: "That seems like a dangerous game."

Other users questioned exactly how the user had apparently managed to cross the border so easily, writing: "Guy singlehandedly invaded N. Korea."

Another joked: "If this random dude with a drone from a store can this easily spy on North Korea, imagine the intel the US has.

US intelligence are probably like 'wait s, we spent hundreds of millions on spy satellites and could have just used a f*** $500 drone?'"

“We gender really early”

We have heard recent revelations in the press of ex-Tavistock clinicians’ concerns about the treatment of children with gender dysphoria and the pressure exerted on them by transgender lobby groups such as Mermaids and GIRES.

To understand what kind of pressure the Tavistock is under we need to know what it is that these groups believe in and promote. What they want, quite openly, is for the UK to adopt the same system of care as in the United States. Over the past two weeks we have had the chance to see exactly what that looks like through the visit of one ofthe most influential people in the area of gender care in the US, Dr Johanna Olson-Kennedy of the Centre for Transgender Health and Development Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles.

Olson-Kennedy is currently in receipt of a $5.7million NIH grant to study the effects of early medical interventions for adolescents with gender dysphoria. Mid-way through the study, the minimum age for cross-sex hormone treatment was decreased from 13 to 8. (This means that an 8 year-old girl with precocious puberty may be given testosterone.) The lack of a control group and a short-term follow-up virtually ensures that Olson-Kennedy will get the results she is after and testosterone use will be declared ‘best practice’ for girls in early puberty. Olson-Kennedy is an enthusiastic advocate for testosterone for 12 and 13 year-old girls (see below).

The University of Bristol Law School has invited Olson-Kennedy to the UK as a Benjamin Meaker visiting professor. The main purpose of the Benjamin Meaker Visiting Professorship is “to bring distinguished researchers from abroad” according to their website. In late March and early April Olson-Kennedy was a keynote speaker at the Re-Thinking Trans Healthcare conference, organised by Peter Dunne and Mermaids, and gave a public lecture, both events at the University of Bristol. She also took part in a live Facebook event with Dr Helen Webberley and was a speaker at the recent European Professional Association forTransgender Health (EPATH) conference in Rome.

The Centre for Transgender Health in Los Angeles had its beginnings in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine HIV clinic, when according to Olson-Kennedy, transwomen (a high-risk group) began to say “can you do my hormones too?” Following an expansion of services in 2000, Olson-Kennedy joined the team in 2006. In 2012 the gender clinic became a recognised centre separate from the HIV clinic. As Olson-Kennedy says:

“If you build it they will come”

Younger and younger children began to come. The team of Health Educators, all trans adults, go out into the community, to schools and places of worship “where the youth are.” Five new young people attend the clinic every week, and there is a similar trajectory as with the Tavistock in London, in terms of the male/female ratio: a huge rise in teenage girls and a rise in non-binary identities. Services include provision of blockers and hormones, mental health and psychiatric care, financial advice and support to change documents and various support groups for young people and family members, including a play-group for “little kids who are gender diverse.” 1,400 3 – 25 year-olds are currently using the service.

Listening to Olson-Kennedy speak about her practice gives us a clear picture of what NHS gender identity services would look like if based on the beliefs and demands of support groups such as Mermaids, GIRES and Gendered Intelligence. Olson-Kennedy is perhaps the most influential ‘gender doctor’ out of many who are already putting into practice a gender-affirmative and informed consent model across the United States. The dominant themes that emerge about her work originate from her seemingly evangelical belief in the presence of an ‘innate gender’ inside of all of us; a gender stereotyped soul (see image above: guns or glitter? Wheels or heels?) which demands expression not just through clothes and pronouns but physically through the body with blockers and hormones.

At the Bristol conference Olson-Kennedy described her clinic as providing “young person-centred care” but it is clearly not: it would be more accurate to say that what the clinic offers is “gender-centred care.” Listening to Olson-Kennedy’s impassioned speeches, it is obvious that a mystical notion of gender is elevated so high and looms so large it obliterates everything else until the clinician cannot see beyond it to the real, individual child in front of them. In a child’s behaviour and words, the gender-centred clinician can only see validation of their own dearly-held faith; everything a child does and says is interpreted through its lens. Gender is everywhere, within us and without, although those within the faith must try to exist in a “cisgender-normative world” of non-believers.

Olson-Kennedy talks of children having their “trans epiphany,” an apt term and a revealing one for someone who appears to hold a quasi-religious veneration of “gender.” It is into this gender temple that little children come, ready to put together their “gender puzzle” from the age of three. This is achieved through conversation, by finding out what children need and “doing everything we can to meet those needs.” To enable the child to disclose information the child is asked in the presence of the family, “tell me about your gender noise,” a clarification of the lens through which the child is expected to view themselves and form their understanding.

This may be contrasted with the example offered by consultant clinical psychologist at the Tavistock, Bernadette Wren, of a question she might ask: “How curious are you about yourself?” This is a neutral question with no adult agenda behind it, no underlying expectation of how the child might frame their understanding of themselves. Because children strive to give adults the “correct” answer to their questions – to please the adult by giving them what they want – it is crucial to rid ourselves of our own inherent biases and pre-conceived ideas and beliefs when we question and listen to children. Through Olson-Kennedy’s leading question, the child immediately perceives that their answer must have to do with “gender,” the adult has decided that for them and in the child’s eyes the adult knows best. Any therapist – and most parents – would be able to see here that the child is being actively influenced into the adult’s pre-determined agenda.

Olson-Kennedy seems to think experimentation with a child’s mind is fine. She is quite open in her view that a neutral approach of ‘watchful waiting’ amounts to neglect.

Parents use the watchful waiting model in the context of their own home – that model should be renamed “do nothing and wait” right, as opposed to, like, okay, let’s figure out how to support these people across all these stages…let’s do some stuff and see how that looks!”

A child is not a test subject for our pet theories. As adults we may bend reality into any theoretical shape we please but children’s lives and bodies are not there to participate as subjects in our academic theorising. Any work with children starts with the child, from a basis of understanding of child psychology, child development and the child’s level of understanding which is shaped by the significant adults in the child’s life. A child is not an abstract component in a theoretical equation for adults to play around with.

It is interesting to note that Polly Carmichael, Director of the Tavistock GIDS, also expressed a need to move away from the idea of ‘watchful waiting’ – but for the opposite reason:

“In the past we used to talk about watchful waiting and I think watchful waiting is now less something we do because there are significant difficulties with some of these young people.”

If ‘watchful waiting’ has begun to be seen as a form of negligence, for Olson-Kennedy it is because the child needs to be ‘supported’ with overt influence towards a self-perception as transgender, whereas at the UK clinic even the more cautious and neutral approach has led to concerns that some young people are being pushed towards medical intervention without enough therapeutic support to explore underlying issues.

During the panel debate at Bristol Polly Carmichael stated: “There is a lack of an evidence base. We’re a little bit more cautious. Rightly or wrongly, that’s where we are.” But there was a clear consensus between Olson-Kennedy and two other panel members, Susie Green of Mermaids and Jay Stewart of Gendered Intelligence, that ‘watchful waiting,’ ‘caution’ and an assessment-based approach all translate as “doing nothing.”

Susie Green stated that children don’t feel heard and that “the assessment model doesn’t work for them, they have the right to autonomy over what happens to their body” and Jay Stewart concurred: “Who gets to say who we are? We get to say who we are.”

Things have clearly moved so far ahead in the US that Olson-Kennedy interpreted the term ‘cautious approach’ to mean the physical intervention of puberty blockers. Because blockers create a medically-induced menopause for adolescent girls, leading to hot flashes, memory problems, insomnia and “all the lovely things about menopause which turns out to suck when you’re in your forties but it’s really bad when you’re 15” Olson-Kennedy’s solution is to use blockers plus testosterone.

“I don’t know that that’s cautious, to put a 14 year-old into menopause” she says, “maybe that feels more cautious,” and “it looks like caution because we’re not giving them testosterone.” Olson-Kennedy gives testosterone to 13 and 14 year-old girls “frequently” and to 12 year-olds “sometimes.” She has absolutely no concern if a girl later regrets the permanent change of voice and male-pattern body and facial hair, along with potentially compromised fertility and sexual function.

'Risk of losing their life': Multiple people rescued as flooding hits Hervey Bay

Ex-Cyclone Alfred's aftershocks have been far-reaching, shaking up communities as far north as Queensland's Fraser Coast, which has seen almost two months of rain in six hours.

Residents in the tourist hotspot woke up to extraordinary flash flooding with some having to be rescued from homes and cars.

The area, about 250 kilometres north of Brisbane, copped a 230-millimetre drenching in just three hours. It usually receives about 130 millimetres a month from December to March.

It inundated some homes, and Torquay Road, usually a busy main street, was submerged.

"All the warnings yesterday in terms of the cyclone watch and the severe warning area did not include Hervey Bay," Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

Extraordinary flash flooding swamped cars and one ute was seen driving with water up to the windows.

Acting Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy said police attended 35 jobs in the area, including 14 for people at "risk of losing their life".

"We've had seven rescues from vehicles, and we've had nine dwellings that have had to be evacuated," he said.

On Sunday morning, authorities issued an emergency warning for Hervey Bay and nearby K'gari, formerly Fraser Island, to shelter indoors.

Even the police station was ordered out.

The area remained in the severe weather warning area on Sunday night.

"Due to that heavy intense rainfall that we're experiencing … we're asking people to take shelter now," Chelepy said.

In some areas floodwaters have receded, but the Fraser Coast community remains on edge.

"We'll certainly be there to see things through for the Hervey Bay community," Premier David Crisafulli said.

The Ukrainian military launched two HIMARS rockets directly at the stalls of a market in the town of Veliky Kopani in Russia’s Kherson Region on Sunday, according to regional governor Vladimir Saldo. The attack left several civilians dead and “a lot” wounded, Saldo said, citing preliminary data.

Dozens of civilians were at the market when at least two projectiles fired from a US-supplied M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launcher struck the location, according to a Telegram post by Saldo, which included images from the aftermath. The photos show one building badly damaged, with thick smoke billowing from it.

Footage circulating online shows a destroyed van ablaze outside of the market, with an injured – or possibly dead – person lying next to it.

A paramedic and driver with the local emergency medical services were also injured in the attack, the regional health minister, Elena Borchaninova, told TASS. At least seven civilians were injured in the attack with one subsequently succumbing to his injuries, the ministry’s press service told the news agency.

The exact number of casualties has not yet been officially established, as the wounded are still being transferred to hospitals. At least some of the victims were sent to the coastal city of Skadovsk, located some 20 km to the south of Veliky Kopani.

“The information is still preliminary. We are waiting for all the victims. They have been sent to the Skadovsk hospital. So far, only two have been brought in. Unfortunately, one of the two has died,” the Health Ministry told RIA Novosti.

X Takes Down Network Of Chinese Accounts Amplifying NYT Attacks On Dissident Arts Group

Thousands of accounts with suspected links to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) have been removed by social media platform X over the past month.

The accounts, which exhibited inauthentic activity, had been used to boost articles published by The New York Times that targeted a religious group persecuted in China.

One of the articles, a Chinese-language version of an attack piece on Shen Yun Performing Arts, was boosted so much it became the most shared New York Times article on X in more than a year, according to data from BuzzSumo, a social media analytics tool.

“It looks like a nation-state automated bot attack,” said Rex Lee, a cybersecurity expert at My Smart Privacy who has advised major corporations and government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency.

Most of the accounts were taken down by X after The Epoch Times sent the platform the results of an extensive investigation into the issue. The platform then launched its own investigation.

“We take reports like these very seriously, and continue to action millions of accounts per week for platform manipulation and spam violations,” Dave Heinzinger, X’s head of media strategy, told The Epoch Times in an emailed statement.

The Target

The New York Times over the past eight months has published 10 articles attacking Shen Yun. Eight of them were also published in the outlet’s Chinese-language edition. The articles were all heavily promoted on X by accounts that don’t appear to be authentic users.

Shen Yun is a New York-based performing arts company that showcases traditional Chinese culture as it existed before communism. The company was founded by practitioners of Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that includes meditative exercises and teachings based on the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. The CCP sees Shen Yun, and Falun Gong more widely, as a threat because both make a point of exposing the regime’s human rights abuses.

Missouri won a default judgment against China for $24 billion as a result of China’s hoarding of PPE during Covid.

It was a default judgment, although Missouri still had to make its evidence. The evidence was damning.

China concealed information as relates to the virus. China nationalized American factories producing PPE such that Missouri had to incur substantial additional costs to procure PPE.

My only technical problem with the decision is that we now no facemasks did nothing.

That said, the additional monetary damages incurred by Missouri to procure what they thought was necessary at the time, which was made more difficult and more costly as a result of China’s actions, was amply proven.

SCOTUS inaction on botched SWAT raid coupled with Trump’s push for greater police immunity could usher in a new era of lawless policing and brutality.

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hold a SWAT team leader accountable for raiding the wrong house, wrecking the wrong home, and terrorizing an innocent family.

The Rutherford Institute is warning that the Court’s decision not to hear the appeal in Jimerson v. Lewis, coupled with President Trump’s call for a new crime bill that would further insulate police from liability, accountability and charges of official misconduct, could usher in a new era of police brutality, lawlessness and the reckless deployment of lethal force on unarmed civilians. In the 30 years since the first Crime Bill fueled the militarization of police, SWAT teams continue to terrorize innocent homeowners and then receive qualified immunity from the courts.

“The Supreme Court continues to send the message that in the American police state, ‘we the people’ are at the mercy of law enforcement officers who have almost absolute discretion to decide who is a threat, what constitutes resistance, and how harshly they can deal with the people they were appointed to ‘serve and protect,’” said constitutional attorney John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute and author of Battlefield America: The War on the American People. “Make no mistake that the real purpose of qualified immunity is to rig the system, ensuring that abusive agents of the government almost always win and the victims of government abuse almost always lose.”

In declining to hear an appeal in Jimerson v. Lewis, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed qualified immunity to stand for a SWAT team commander of the Waxahachie Police Department in Texas who, in the process of executing a search warrant on a suspected methamphetamine stash house, recklessly led his team to the wrong home, where Karen Jimerson and James Parks were having their three young children get ready for bed. The SWAT commander had failed to match the house’s street address number with a search warrant and ignored other obvious differences between the houses. For instance, unlike the photos of the target house, Jimerson’s home had no fence and had a wheelchair ramp. Despite these differences and being unable to see the house number, the commander led officers to Jimerson’s house where they deployed a flashbang, broke the front windows, and breached the door. The officers began a protective sweep and told two females to get on the ground before realizing it was the wrong house. An internal police department investigation determined that “reasonable and normal protocol was completely overlooked.”

The family filed a federal lawsuit, alleging a Fourth Amendment violation for the wrongful raid of their home. Although the district court would have let the case proceed, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals held that even though the commander’s efforts to identify the correct residence were “deficient,” the commander was entitled to qualified immunity from the lawsuit. The Rutherford Institute’s amicus brief, which called on the Supreme Court to hear the case, argued that police who clearly violate the Fourth Amendment by failing to follow the commands of a search warrant and instead invade an innocent third-party’s home should not be entitled to qualified immunity. Justices Sotomayor and Jackson disagreed with the majority’s refusal to hear the case.

Erin Glenn Busby, Lisa R. Eskow, and Michael F. Sturley with the University of Texas School of Law Supreme Court Clinic advanced the arguments in the Jimerson v. Lewis amicus brief.

The Rutherford Institute, a nonprofit civil liberties organization, defends individuals whose constitutional rights have been threatened or violated and educates the public on a wide spectrum of issues affecting their freedoms.

As DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has been one of the cabinet officials who has surprised many people with her approach, effectiveness and actionable determination to support President Trump’s vision for the Dept of Homeland Security.

In this interview with Margaret Brennan, Secretary Noem takes apart all of the attempted narratives with almost no effort. Noem does a great job outlining the non-pretending reality of several domestic security issues, including the fentanyl issue that President Trump is confronting with Canada and Mexico. WATCH:

[Transcript] – MARGARET BRENNAN: We begin this morning with the Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. Madam Secretary, good to have you in person. Thank you for joining us.

SECRETARY OF HOMELAND SECURITY KRISTI NOEM: Good morning. Thank you for having me.

MARGARET BRENNAN: I want to dive right into this trade war. The justification President Trump invoked these tariffs under had to do with fentanyl. Mexico’s president said Thursday that Customs and Border Protection figures show seizures of fentanyl on the southern border have dropped over the past year. She claimed they plummeted 75% in the past six months. Doesn’t that show the existing system is working?

SECRETARY NOEM: We’ve seen incredible progress as far as what we’ve been able to stop at the southern border since President Trump has taken office. And I think that progress can be built on. These partnerships that we have in going after traffickers, cartels, the drug trade, and also human trafficking, can be even stronger and built on in the future. That’s one of the things we’ve been asking for, in specific to the Mexican government, is how can we work better together to make sure we not only have the enforcement mission at the border, but south of the border and make sure we’re going after these cartels. You’ve seen the President name them as terrorist organizations. And Canada, just recently, is starting to allow us to access some of their criminal background histories that we need in order to know who’s coming across our border and what they’re bringing. So, because of his strong stance on tariffs, we’re seeing them wanting to be better partners with us to keep our people safe.

MARGARET BRENNAN: So Canada’s Prime Minister said it’s totally false to claim Canada is unwilling to fight fentanyl. You just indicated they’re willing to do more here. He pointed to CBP data that showed a 97% drop in fentanyl seizures from January compared to December, a near zero low, he said.

SECRETARY NOEM: Yeah we’re–

MARGARET BRENNAN: –is the data accurate?

SECRETARY NOEM: The data is getting better. And I would say in the conversations that I’ve had this week with Canadian officials, they were hoping to avoid the tariffs, and had a lot of conversations, but not a lot of action. So this is the hope, is that the fact that President Trump has said something and now has enforced consequences, we really are hoping for even better partnerships. We need access to their criminal background system so that we know when someone crosses that northern border who they are, why they’re in our country, and who they may be partnering with. We also need them to work with us on identifying packages, technology investments. Canada has said they will do that. We just want to see them actually do it. In the past, promises have been made by both Mexico and Canada that they didn’t follow through on. Their naming of a fentanyl czar in Canada is important. That’s great. Now let’s see really what happens. President Trump has been strong, and I think that’s why you’ve seen the data going our direction, but boy, every day people in this country are dying of overdoses, and I don’t want any more families to have to deal with that tragedy if we can be- if it can be avoided and we can have a stronger relationship.

MARGARET BRENNAN: So, you just gave specific examples of what Canada and Mexico can do, presumably, to avoid the tariffs that are now being pushed off until April 2. The Commerce Secretary said on another network, if fentanyl ends, I think these will come off, but if fentanyl does not end, or he’s uncertain about it, meaning the president, they will stay on until he’s comfortable. Is it that general or are these very specific things that you can kind of go through and check to avoid these tariffs.

SECRETARY NOEM: I’ve had very specific conversations with Canadian officials and Mexican officials on what they can do so they know what they can do to help avoid tariffs in the future, and what we’re expecting of them. If they do it, we shall see. We all recognize that each one of these leaders has political environments in their home countries as well, but President Trump means business, and he meant it when he ran to be President of the United States again, and since he’s taken office, that he will put America first. And every day in this country, we have seen over the last several years, violence and unsafe streets and cities and people lose their children and grandchildren, and he’s taking action to make sure that we’re cleaning up the mess that Joe Biden left behind, and that we have a much safer country and where Americans can look forward to the future.

MARGARET BRENNAN: So this is not just leverage to get a better free trade deal. This is not just because President Trump truly believes that tariffs are the heart of his economic policy?

SECRETARY NOEM: Right.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You’re saying this really is about fentanyl?

SECRETARY NOEM: It really is about fentanyl. It really is. And I think the President obviously wants a strong economy, obviously wants better trade deals as well. But this is about fentanyl and what we can do to stop the cartels from partnering with Chinese officials, laundering money and bringing a poison into our country that is specifically designed to kill the next generation. I think a lot of people don’t understand the strategy of these enemies of the United States and what they’re utilizing. They are bringing this in, not just to make money, they’re bringing it in here to kill Americans. And it’s time that we stand up for the people that live here and make sure that we’re stopping this war against our children.

MARGARET BRENNAN: I want to ask you, border crossings, they’re at a 25 year low.

SECRETARY NOEM: They are. It’s fantastic.

MARGARET BRENNAN: There are 6,000 US military personnel working at the border now, that number could go up to 9,000 by the end of the month. How long do you have to keep them there if the numbers are already dropping like this?

SECRETARY NOEM: You know, we’ll continue the partnership with the Department of Defense, but also we’ve got partnerships with Commerce, with the Attorney General’s office, you know, we’re working every day with the Secretary of State. We’ll keep them there until that border is completely secure, and we see all time record lows of encounters. Our border patrol is doing fantastic work, but we’re going to keep them there until the whole world gets the message that this isn’t Joe Biden’s world anymore. This is President Donald Trump’s country where we have a border, where we have laws and it applies equally to everybody. I think that is what is so refreshing, is that we’re not picking and choosing winners and losers anymore. Americans have to live by the law, so do those who come to this country. You have to come here legally, or there will be consequences.

Israel says it is stopping power to the Gaza, in bid to ratchet up pressure on Hamas

Energy minister vows to use ‘all the tools available’ to free hostages, oust terror group, though Israel has only been supplying power for one desalination plant

Energy Minister Eli Cohen on Sunday instructed the Israel Electric Corporation to immediately cut off the supply of electricity to the Gaza Strip, in an apparent bid to pile pressure on the enclave, where 24 hostages presumed to be alive, and the bodies of 35 more, are still held.

“We will employ all the tools available to us so that all the hostages will return, and we will ensure that Hamas won’t be in Gaza on the ‘day after,’” said Cohen in a short video statement.

Cohen’s office circulated a letter sent to the IEC ordering it to stop selling electricity to Gaza power stations.

However, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel that Cohen’s decision is less dramatic that he made it appear. Electricity from Israel to Gaza was cut off after October 7, but in November Israel announced it was renewing supply to a desalination plant near Deir el-Balah in central Gaza. Israel cut the power to that plant, said the official.

The plant serves more than 600,000 Gaza residents through tankers or the networks of Deir el-Balah and Khan Younis governorates in central and southern Gaza, respectively. It is one of three such seawater processing facilities in the Gaza Strip, which before the war met around 15 percent of the 2 million-plus residents’ need for water.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Let me ask you about what’s happening internally when it comes to, excuse me, migration. The administration has revived this policy of detaining migrant families, parents with children in ICE detention centers. Bush did it, Obama did it, Biden did not. Have you seen these Texas facilities where children are being held with their parents? Are you comfortable with it personally?

SECRETARY NOEM: We’ve got detention facilities across the country, and there’s specific ones that are built specifically for families if they are detained. But remember, everybody has an option. They have an option to be here legally or illegally, and they can self-deport as well. We’ve set up a system and a website where people who are here illegally right now can register, and they can choose to go home on their own and keep their families united.

MARGARET BRENNAN: The kids don’t really have a choice in this–

SECRETARY NOEM: Well, the kids do have a choice. If they have parents, they make a choice to keep their families together, if they want to or not. They- if parents make a decision to leave their children behind, then that’s a choice that they made as a family. And we need to remember that when Americans break the law and they have consequences or face a situation, they’re separated from their families, too. I don’t believe we should prioritize people from other countries above Americans.

MARGARET BRENNAN: But when it comes to reviving the policy of separating families from their children at the border–

SECRETARY NOEM: I don’t know that we’re actually reviving it–

MARGARET BRENNAN: That’s what I want to ask you–

SECRETARY NOEM: –President Biden didn’t follow the law.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You won’t?

SECRETARY NOEM: He didn’t follow the law in the fact that it’s always been equally applied until his administration, and then he made decisions to ignore federal law in how he handled immigration and enforcement within our borders. And so today, we’re- we’re expanding our team at ICE, and we’re going to have an acting director in Todd Lyons, who has a long history with Tom Homan, they have worked together to build on these enforcement operations. We’re also naming a deputy secretary in Madison Sheahan, that was going to be another expansion of this team. They have done incredible work cleaning up our communities and making them safer. Adding more people to the team, with Todd and with Madison, is going to allow us to partner with local law enforcement officials to make sure that we truly are following through on enforcing the law, and if you break our law, then there’s going to be consequences.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You want the number of deportations to tick up?

SECRETARY NOEM: I do. Absolutely.

SECRETARY NOEM: People- remember, they have an option to go home on their own. We are giving them that opportunity to do that, and we will help facilitate that. And if they don’t, and they end up coming into our enforcement opportunities that we have in front of us, you know, they may never get the chance to come back. So people need to remember, if they self-deport, they will have an opportunity to come back to this country legally.

MARGARET BRENNAN: But you have a capacity issue right now in terms of just beds to put people in when you detain them. Are you going to open up military facilities like Fort Bliss?

SECRETARY NOEM: There is, yes, a plan to use the facilities at Fort Bliss for detention facilities. But also we need to remember to ask- Congress needs to continue through with funding that this administration has asked for. You know, we clearly have a CR discussion in front of us this week. We have a reconciliation discussion. That reconciliation bill needs to happen. We have just weeks before we are out of the funds to continue the operations that- that we have. And even- everywhere I’ve been in this country, out there, looking at what President Trump has done on immigration and border enforcement, the people that I meet are saying thank you. Thank you for getting these terrorists out of the country. He has deported

MARGARET BRENNAN: Terrorists?

SECRETARY NOEM: in just one month.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Have you deported terrorists?

SECRETARY NOEM: 22 known and terrorists on the terrorist watch list are out of this country now we have almost 700 gang members that have been deported out of the country in just a month, and–

MARGARET BRENNAN: Which have been redefined as foreign terrorist organizations by the Trump administration.

SECRETARY NOEM: Well, 281 specific TDA members, which we know are the worst of the worst, have been taken out of this country. So everyone that has a story like Laken Riley’s family or Jocelyn’s family, they’re extremely grateful that that won’t be perpetuated amongst other families in other states.

MARGARET BRENNAN: I want to ask you, you said that you have found leakers within DHS and you’re going to prosecute them. Back on February 9, you tweeted, the FBI is so corrupt, we will work with any and every agency to stop leaks. Were you wrong then to blame the FBI if the leaks were from within DHS?

SECRETARY NOEM: No, I think there’s leakers all over- throughout this government. I think that everybody needs to be–

MARGARET BRENNAN: What did they leak?

SECRETARY NOEM: –I think these, in DHS, specifically, these two were leaking our enforcement operations that we had planned and were going to conduct in several cities and expose law enforcement to vulnerabilities, to those ops being jeopardized, to where their lives would be in danger. So they will be prosecuted, and they could face up to 10 years in federal prison because they did that. Anyone who is leaking information outside of- of how something is planned for the safety of those law enforcement officers needs to be held accountable for that.

MARGARET BRENNAN: and you’re going to continue these polygraphing

SECRETARY NOEM: Absolutely

MARGARET BRENNAN: of employees.

SECRETARY NOEM: The authorities that I have under the Department of Homeland Security are broad and extensive, and I plan to use every single one of them to make sure that we’re following the law, that we are following the procedures in place to keep people safe, and that we’re making sure we’re following through on what President Trump has promised, that he’s going to make America safe again.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said Sunday that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, is working to establish a “migration administration” that will oversee the exodus of Palestinian residents from the Gaza Strip.

Addressing the Knesset Land of Israel Caucus, Smotrich said that the plan was “taking shape” but acknowledged it would be a massive logistical undertaking.

The far-right minister, who recently returned from Washington, where he held a series of meetings with US officials, said that Israel is working with the Trump administration to find countries that will take in the Gazans who leave and that budgeting for such a “complex” undertaking “will not be an obstacle.”

US President Donald Trump triggered global perplexity in early February by suggesting the US “take over” Gaza and turn it into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” while forcing its Palestinian inhabitants to relocate to Egypt, Jordan or other countries.

The Palestinian Authority and Arab nations have rejected Trump’s plan outright. At the end of last week, two key Arab nations organizations instead endorsed an Egyptian counterproposal for rehabilitating Gaza that is based on leaving inhabitants in place, a stipulation that undermines Smotrich and his allies’ vision of largely clearing the enclave of Palestinians.

In the dimly lit rooms of Afghanistan's private gatherings, young boys adorned in makeup and brightly coloured women's clothing are forced to dance for the amusement of powerful men.

But these boys - some as young as ten - are not merely dancers.

They are victims of Bacha Bazi, an ancient practice that often turns them into sex slaves for Afghanistan's elite.

The barbaric tradition, whose name translates to 'boy play', has persisted for centuries, surviving empires, wars, and political upheavals.

Now, while Afghanistan's current Taliban leadership claim to oppose it, Bacha Bazi continues as an open secret.

A 2024 UK government report found that boys remain at high risk of commercial sexual exploitation through Bacha Bazi, with the practice thriving under the same warlords and power brokers who have ruled Afghan society for generations.

Though some boys reportedly volunteer, many are sold into this life by their own impoverished families desperate to get by.

Others are quite simply abducted, including by police officers - the very people supposed to prevent Bacha Bazi from resurging.

Victims often face further violence upon returning home, and the suspension of international aid to Afghanistan since the Taliban returned in 2021 has left them with little access to support or rehabilitation.

All this in a country where homosexuality attracts the death penalty and pederasty is supposedly punishable by long prison sentences.

The roots of Bacha Bazi stretch back to at least the 13th century and the practice has been widely documented by domestic and foreign intellectuals, historians and politicians visiting the region.

But its most infamous resurgence came during the Mujahideen's war against the Soviet Union in the 1980s.

Afghan commanders who fought in the resistance were notorious for keeping young boys as their personal possessions, treating them as status symbols as well as objects of abuse.

When the Taliban first rose to power in the 1990s, they claimed one of their chief grievances was this 'perversion' among the warlords, and they outlawed the practice.

But after the Taliban was ousted in 2001 amid the US invasion of Afghanistan, the old power structures returned, and so did Bacha Bazi.

The foreign forces operating in Afghanistan were well aware of the heinous practice, but did little to intervene.

During the US occupation, American and British soldiers gave disturbing accounts of scenarios in which men they were ordered to work alongside routinely abused young boys.

One US Marine, Lance Corporal Gregory Buckley Jr., confided to his father that he could hear Afghan police officers raping boys on a military base at night.

'At night we can hear them screaming, but we're not allowed to do anything about it,' Buckley junior was reported as saying by his father.

The Marine was later gunned down by local Afghan forces his unit was tasked with training - one of many so-called 'green on blue' incidents that blighted US and coalition troops in Afghanistan.

Other Western soldiers told how their commanding officers warned them to 'look the other way' and ignore the rampant abuse of children because confronting Afghan allies about the practice could damage diplomatic relations.

A New York Times investigation revealed that child rape by government-affiliated Afghan commanders was so common that it became an open secret among US troops.

The Taliban, meanwhile, exploited Bacha Bazi to their own advantage, infiltrating US-backed Afghan police and military headquarters by sending in boys to entertain their enemies as Trojan Horse 'honey traps'.

These boys, once inside the American-allied Afghan law enforcement compounds, would either poison their abusers, shoot them, carry out suicide bombings - or simply open the gates for Taliban fighters to carry out deadly attacks of their own.

In one 2016 operation in Afghanistan's southern Uruzgan province, this method led to the deaths of dozens of Afghan soldiers and police officers.

Meanwhile, in his harrowing documentary 'The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan', Afghan journalist Najibullah Quraishi exposed the ease with which men acquire these children.

Once young boys are sold by their families or abducted, many are harangued into harems and flogged by pimps and traffickers.

Some boys are kept effectively as personal property, with their owners wary of allowing other men to see the children for fear they would try to steal them away.

Others, however, are traded willingly as a commodity.

One powerful figure in the north of Afghanistan named Dastager, when asked how he selected a boy, responded chillingly: 'He should be attractive, good for dancing. Around 12 or 13, and good-looking.

'I tell their parents I will train them. I'll give the family money and tell them I'll look after him.'

The reality is far worse. That man admitted he had been with more than 2,000 boys, using them until they were no longer useful.

Another individual whose name was given as Mestary said that every military commander had a young companion as part of a sick game.

'I had a boy because every commander had one. There's competition amongst the commanders. Without one, I couldn't compete with the others.'

In 2024, the EU Agency for Asylum claimed: 'Afghan security forces, in particular the Afghan Local Police, reportedly recruited boys specifically to use them for Bacha Bazi in every province of the country.'

Nearly 600 illegal residents arrested since start of Ramadan, police say

State Department To Use AI To Revoke Visas of Students Who ‘Appear Pro-Hamas’

The effort will comb through social media accounts using AI in a major crackdown on the speech of foreign students

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is launching an AI-driven effort to revoke the visas of foreigners in the US who “appear pro-Hamas” in a crackdown targeting pro-Palestine protests on college campuses, Axios reported on Thursday.

The report said the effort will involve AI-assisted reviews of social media accounts of tens of thousands of foreign students in the US on visas that will look for “evidence of alleged terrorist sympathies expressed after Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel.”

The language in the report suggests that any foreign students who attend pro-Palestine demonstrations or express sympathy for Palestinians online could be swept up in the crackdown since opponents of the Israeli siege on Gaza or US military support for Israel are often labeled “pro-Hamas.”

Civil liberty groups have strongly criticized President Trump’s promises to deport foreign students who attend pro-Palestine protests since the speech of foreigners inside the US is supposed to be protected under the First Amendment.

“If we open the door to expelling foreign students who peacefully express ideas out of step with the current administration about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, we should expect it to swing wider to encompass other viewpoints too,” Sarah McLaughlin, senior scholar at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), said in an op-ed for MSNBC in January.

“Today it may be alleged ‘Hamas sympathizers’ facing threats of deportation for their political expression. Who could it be in four years? In eight?” McLaughlin added.

Abed Ayoub, head of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, told Axios that Americans won’t like the State Department’s effort because they’ll view it as “capitulating free speech rights for a foreign nation.”

The new State Department project is part of a broader administration effort against protests that are critical of Israel, which includes threats from President Trump that universities that allow what he called “illegal protests” would lose federal funding. The Department of Justice also launched a new task force investigating alleged incidents of “antisemitism” on college campuses.

Pentagon Awards Contract for AI War-Planning Tool

The US Department of Defense has awarded a contract to Scale AI to integrate artificial intelligence “into military operational and theater-level planning.”

According to the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), the AI system, dubbed Thunderforge, will “accelerate decision-making, allowing planners to more rapidly synthesize vast amounts of information, generate multiple courses of action, and conduct AI-powered wargaming to anticipate and respond to evolving threats.”

The AI will initially be deployed to the Indo-Pacific Command and European Command theaters. The DIU did not disclose how much Scale AI will be paid to develop Thunderforge, but added that the system would also make use of Anduril’s Lattice program and “state of the art LLMs [large language models] enabled by Microsoft.”

As the Pentagon continues to turn to the tech sector for weapons and other war-fighting programs, the industry has increasingly sought to work with the Defense Department.

William D. Hartung, a senior research fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, explained last year how tech firms replicate the strategies of arms manufacturing giants, with many companies seeking Pentagon contracts placing retired high-ranking military personnel in top positions.

Anduril was founded by tech entrepreneur Palmer Luckey specifically to seek contracts from the Pentagon. Google recently reversed a pledge not to build AI for weapons or surveillance.

The DIU press release said the new AI marks a decisive shift in how the Pentagon plans to fight wars. “Thunderforge marks a decisive shift toward AI-powered, data-driven warfare, ensuring that US forces can anticipate and respond to threats with speed and precision. Following its initial deployment, Thunderforge will be scaled across combatant commands,” the agency explained.

According to the Washington Post, Dan Tadross, the head of federal delivery at Scale who previously served with the Marines and researched AI military applications for the Navy, claimed Thunderforge was needed because “planning and operational process for the U.S. military has not evolved since Napoleon.”

While the Pentagon views AI as an important tool for fighting future wars, its effectiveness is unclear. The Defense Department has deployed Project Maven to the Middle East and Ukraine to aid with targeting; however, humans still do a much better job than the AI.

Intense Israeli Strikes Hit Southern Lebanon

Israel launched an intensive wave of strikes on southern Lebanon late on March 7, targeting what it claimed to be military sites of Hezbollah.

Lebanon’s National News Agency (ANA) said that more than 20 strikes targeted the Zaghrabin hill in Jabal al-Rayhan in the Jezzine region, the towns of Yatar and Ziqin, a valley in the town of Babliyeh, the town of Tabna, the Marais’ area located between the towns of Ansar and al-Zarariyeh, as well as the al-Hamdaniya area between the towns of Kafrwa and Azza.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that the strikes hit sites used by Hezbollah to store weapons and rocket launchers, adding that the targets posed a threat to Israel.

“The weapons and the rocket launchers in the military sites posed a threat to the State of Israel and constituted a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon,” the statement reads.

These were the most violent strikes to target Lebanon since the completion of the United States-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah on February 18. However, there were no reports of any casualties.

Earlier in the day, ANA reported that two civilians from the Hezbollah-linked Jihad al-Bina organization tasked with inspecting the damage caused by previous Israeli strikes on the southern town of Kfar Kila were killed, and a third person of Syrian nationality was critically injured as a result of Israeli forces opening fire on them opposite the town’s wall.

The U.S.-brokered ceasefire put an end to a heated conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that broke out more than a year earlier as a result of the war in the Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah, which lost all of its commanders and took heavy losses during the conflict, has so far refrained from responding to the IDF repeated strikes on Lebanon.

While Israel took some losses during the fighting, which lasted for more than 14 months, there is no doubt that Hezbollah lost deterrence. Now, the IDF is exploiting this new reality to make sure that the group never rebuild its combat capabilities in any part of Lebanon. Hezbollah will likely be able to adapt to this new reality without making some serious changes in its political strategy and its internal structure.

The HHS has reportedly offered a voluntary separation package to all employees as part of the US president’s crackdown on government spending

The US Department of Health and Human Services(HHS) has reportedly offered its 80,000 employees a $25,000 voluntary buyoutto encourage resignations as part of President Donald Trump’s initiative to reduce the federal workforce.

The health agency emailed its staff onFriday night offering a “voluntary separation incentive payment” aimed at workforce reductions without resorting to forced layoffs, CBS News and NBC News reported Saturday, citing sources.Employees have until March 14 to apply, with departures expected before the end of the fiscal year. Neither the White House nor HHS has responded to media requests for comment.

HHS oversees several major health agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and others.The reported buyout offer follows a wave of recent job cuts across the agency. Thousands of probationary HHS workers – those employed for less than a year – were reportedly informed last month that they would be let go. The CDC has also seen significant workforce reductions.

In late February, US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. hinted at further cuts at his department,saying he had a “generic list” of employees he wanted removed.

The buyout offers are part of Trump’s broader crackdown on government spending and bureaucracy, spearheaded by the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by billionaire Elon Musk. Since its inception shortly after Trump’s inauguration, DOGE has led a sweeping overhaul of federal agencies, slashing jobs, eliminating programs, and restructuring departments.

Last month, DOGE announced that theInter-American Foundation, a US foreign aid agency, had been downsizedto just one employee, the minimum required for operation. It also targetedUSAID, Washington’s primary mechanism for funding political projects abroad,laying off 2,000 employeesand placing most of the remaining staff on leave.

Money is the lifeblood of modern civilization. It enables us to establish contracts, assess the worth of goods and services, and trade efficiently. But what exactly is money, and who creates the U.S. dollar?

Our monetary system is a mechanism for transferring wealth to urban elites who produce nothing.

The first step in understanding money is dispelling the notion that a valuable asset like gold backs it — because it doesn’t.

The dollar is valuable for two reasons. First, it is backed by the “full faith and credit of the U.S. government,” meaning its worth derives from its ability to tax people to pay its debts. Second, the federal government only accepts tax payments in U.S. dollars, creating an inherent demand for the currency.

Despite these factors, the federal government creates very little of our money. The U.S. Treasury prints paper bills and mints coins, but physical cash accounts for only about 10% of our total money supply.

The hidden mechanism of money creation

Most of our money comes from debt — and that’s a problem.

Modern money is almost entirely created through lending. Every non-cash dollar must eventually be repaid to a private bank with interest. In other words, most U.S. money is simply a collection of IOUs owed to private financial institutions.

Commercial banks operate under a system called “fractional reserve banking.” They are private businesses that only hold a small amount of cash reserves and issue loans often exceeding 900% of their small cash reserves. When a bank issues a loan and deposits it into a borrower’s account, new “money” is created out of thin air.
