NEW JERSEY (VINnews) — President Trump hosted about 150 Orthodox Jewish leaders at his Bedminster golf course Monday. The gathering comes as primary season heats up, with Trump and Ron DeSantis both vying for the support of frum Jews, especially amid growing tensions between the Israeli government and the Biden administration.

Following a prayer for “our dear president,” Trump was presented with a silver Torah crown. It read: “Give thanks to Hashem for He is Good, for His Kindness endures forever. Presented to President Donald J. Trump — for his extraordinary and heroic efforts to help the State of Israel and the Jewish People. He and his family should be blessed eternally.”

Trump read aloud the proclamation, followed by a speech about Israel. “Let me put it this way,” Trump told the crowd, “If we don’t win, Israel is in big trouble. I mean it.”

 

The dinner for about 150 people was organized by the Israel Heritage Foundation. Among the leaders are Farley Weiss and Dr. Joe Frager, the past president and vice president of the National Council of Young Israel’s board of directors.

 

Rabbi David Katz, the organization’s executive director, said the group feels Trump has earned his place in history for his steadfast support for Israel, his administration’s efforts to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and for recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. “This is our expression of gratitude,” he said.

Finland risks becoming a ‘battlefield’ against Russia – former EU adviser

The Nordic nation’s recent NATO membership could spell catastrophe, Sakari Linden has told RT

 

Finland’s decision to abandon neutrality and join NATO could prove catastrophic, as it risks turning the country into a battlefieldin a potential conflict with Russia, former EU Parliament adviser Sakari Linden has warned.

 

Linden spoke to RT on Thursday, on the sidelines of the International Arctic Forum in Murmansk.

 

Finland has an almost 1,300-kilometer-long border with Russia, and officially joined the US-led military bloc in April 2023 following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

 

By joining NATO, Finland “abandoned decades of neutrality,” which had provided the country with independence, prosperity, and security, Linden said.

 

“Every time in history when Finland becomes very aligned with… Western powers,” it becomes, in Linden’s words, “some kind of natural resources reservoir of the West.”

 

The country then loses its independence and “risks becoming a battlefield against Russia,” he warned.

 

Linden said Finland’s position between East and West givesit “geopolitical balance,” and that it benefits most from acting as a trade bridge between Russia and the EU.

 

The former EU adviser further noted that during the Cold War, Finland was a “neutral” country that traded with both the West and the East. He said that it has often been the West that sought to restrict Finland’s trade with Russia, while “Russia has never forbidden Finland” from trading with the West.

 

Now that Finland has totally aligned with Western powers in foreign and security policy – which Linden said “want to put pressure on Russia” – Helsinki is the one bearing the “burden of all the security risks.”

 

Since joining the US-led bloc, the Finnish government has embarked on a militarization push, including expanding military training and urging the population to prepare for a possible war with Russia.

 

NATO’s eastern members have long declared Russia to be a direct threat, and Western officials have repeatedly claimed that if Moscow wins the Ukraine conflict, it could target other European countries.

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed any possibility of a military advance against NATO as “nonsense,” arguing that the supposed threat of a Russian attack is being used by European politicians to scare their citizens to extract more resources from them and justify increased military spending.

"Dunham’s boss atUSAID in Indonesia, Dr. Donald Gordon Jr., author of Credit for Small Farmers in Developing Countries for USAID (1976), was identified in Julius Mader’s 1968 book, Who Who’s in the CIA, as a CIA agent.9

Another boss, Peter Geithner, was future Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner’s father.

Ann obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in anthropology at the University of Hawaii, writing a thesis which argued that Indonesian villagers were dynamic and could produce greater wealth if they had access to market incentives and capital.

Ann went to Indonesia in the mid 1960s at the time that the CIA supported a military coup led by General Suharto against the left-wing regime of Sukarno.

Over two million suspected members of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) were rounded up and massacred in its aftermath and thousands more were imprisoned—many for decades.

Much of Ann’s anthropological and consulting field work was carried out in East and Central Java, which provided a hotbed of support for the PKI—including among members of the Javanese women’s association and labor federation.

The CIA at this time employed anthropologists and development workers as undercover agents to gather information on villagers’ political affiliations, in which Ann, according to her thesis adviser, Alice Dewey, had taken an interest."

 

"In March 1965, Ann married an Indonesian Lieutenant Colonel, Lolo Soetoro, whom she met at the University of Hawaii’s East-West Center, a “kinder, gentler version of the School of the Americas,” according to one writer, and “cover for a training program in which Southeast Asians were brought to Hawaii and trained to go back to create agent nets,” as U.S. Information Service (USIS) Director Frank Scotten described it.

The head of the East-West Center in 1965 was Howard P. Jones, U.S. ambassador to Indonesia from 1958 to 1965.10

Jones was present in Jakarta as Suharto and his CIA-backed military officers planned the 1965 overthrow of Sukarno, who was seen, along with the PKI as an ally of China.

Jones later defended the coup in The Washington Post, writing that Suharto was merely responding to a communist coup against Sukarno led by Colonel Untung—which was actually set up by the CIA.11

A friend of Ann’s told her biographer that the marriage to Lolo was arranged, suggesting that Ann may have acted as a female “honeypot” for the CIA whose job was to recruit assets and help them obtain U.S. citizenship.

Hailing from an aristocratic family which lost out in Sukarno’s land reform, Soetoro was recalled to active duty in July 1965 before General Suharto’s right-wing coup and worked as an army geographer in Java and Papua New Guinea, where the Indonesian army brutally suppressed popular revolts.

Soetoro went on to become an executive at Mobil Oil and its liaison to Suharto, whose economic policies Dunham praised."

In the early 1960s, Stanley Dunham was part of a group photo taken with Barack Obama, Sr., on his departure from the University of Hawaii.

Obama Sr. had been part of a State Department/CIA exchange financed in part by the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation that brought future African leaders to the U.S. who were being groomed to serve U.S. interests in the Cold War.

Jeffrey Epstein’s newly-revealed private calendar showed scheduled meetings with the current CIA director, a college president and attorney who served in the Obama administration, according to a report published Sunday.

 

New documents, which belonged to the rich convicted pedophile and were obtained by The Wall Street Journal, showed planned meetings with a slew of prominent individuals, including now-CIA Director William Burns, Bard College president Leon Botstein, Obama White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler and professor Noam Chomsky.

 

All the scheduled meetings were slated to take place after Epstein was jailed in 2008 on charges of solicitation, including soliciting a minor. WSJ could not prove each scheduled meeting actually took place, and the documents did not reveal the purpose for the meetings.

 

A spokesperson for Burns, who has taken the CIA’s helm since 2021 under the Biden administration, said the nation’s spy chief met with Epstein a decade ago when he was trying to leave the government.

 

"Director Burns recalls being introduced by a mutual friend in Washington, DC, and then met with him once briefly in New York City, about a decade ago as the Director was preparing to leave government service," CIA spokeswoman Tammy Kupperman Thorp said in comment provided to Fox News Digital.

 

"The Director did not know anything about him, other than he was introduced as an expert in the financial services sector and offered general advice on transition to the private sector. The Director does not recall any further contact, including receiving a ride to the airport. They had no relationship."

 

Ruemmler had dozens of meetings with Epstein following her work for the Obama administration and before taking the reins as Goldman Sachs' top lawyer in 2020, according to WSJ. The documents show Epstein was planning on Ruemmler joining him for a trip to Paris in 2015 and another visit to his private island in the Caribbean in 2017.

 

A Goldman Sachs rep told the outlet that Ruemmler had a working relationship with Epstein when she was employed at law firm Latham & Watkins LLP, but did not travel with Epstein. The spokesperson said Epstein introduced Ruemmler to potential legal clients, such as Bill Gates.

 

"Many of Ms. Ruemmler's contacts related to a potential representation involving the Gates Foundation, a representation of the Edmond de Rothschild bank, and other business opportunities," a Goldman Sachs spokesperson told Fox News Digital on Sunday.

"I regret ever knowing Jeffrey Epstein," Ruemmler said, according to WSJ.

 

The Journal reported that the majority of people they spoke to said they met with Epstein for donations or to make powerful connections. Botstein, who has served as Bard College’s president since 1975, said he met with Epstein to try to get him to donate to the liberal arts school.

ROME, October 28, 2013 - World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim and His Holiness Pope Francis met today at the Vatican to discuss their mutual efforts to end extreme poverty and provide greater opportunities for the poor and vulnerable.

 

“I was so grateful to meet with the Holy Father and was inspired by his passion and commitment to help the poor, the sick, and the hungry,” Kim said. “We talked about ways we could work together with faith leaders to make a preferential option for the poor, so they can have greater opportunity and justice in their lives.”

 

Kim thanked Pope Francis for his strong statements encouraging humble service to the less fortunate, as well as his support for better education, health care, environmental protection, and jobs with fair wages to help the poor lift themselves out of poverty.

 

Following the 20-minute meeting, Pope Francis and Kim agreed to explore ways to work together to end extreme poverty.

 

“At the World Bank Group, we have set a goal to end extreme poverty in less than a generation, and to boost shared prosperity for the bottom 40 percent of people in developing countries,” Kim said. “Pope Francis and I agree on the urgent moral imperative to lessen the suffering of over 1 billion people and to end the scandal of poverty. We share a vision of a world with greater compassion for all people in need.”

 

During his visit, Kim also met with Monseigneur Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States, and discussed closer collaboration between the Church and the World Bank Group.

 

“Pope Francis unites us all with the moral clarity of his message on poverty,” Kim said. “We must address the root causes of poverty by giving the poor access to education, health care, and good jobs–benefitting women, young people, and those denied opportunities in the past.”

The World Bank, the Catholic Church, and the Global Future of Development

Contact between the two institutions has been sporadic. The Bank’s focus is projects with governments to address economic development, while the Church works mainly through social channels. Recently, however, the leaders of both institutions have articulated convergent approaches to human development that link economics with health, education, and the environment. As World Bank President Jim Yong Kim put it after his meeting with Pope Francis in October 2013, “We share a vision of a world with greater compassion for all people in need.”

 

This spring Georgetown’s new Global Futures Initiative is inviting faculty and students to explore that common vision and how to realize it in practice. A series of lectures by President Kim and his colleague Chief Economist Kaushik Basu are catalyzing conversations on campus and on the web, including one with 20 participants from Catholic and Jesuit colleges and universities around the world.

 

In that conversation thus far, bloggers from Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, India, South Korea, Japan, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Rwanda, and the United States have highlighted two areas of overlap and one difference of emphasis in emergent approaches to development within the Bank and within the Church.

 

Mental Models. Kim’s first lecture, on the Ebola crisis, highlighted the Bank’s recent work on mental models—the often unconscious ideas and values that frame problems and can impede the search for creative solutions. What Francis calls the “globalization of indifference” exemplifies a destructive mental model—the widespread assumption that economic forces are beyond our control and that fundamental questions of justice should not frame our policy thinking.

 

Social Inequality. In his first lecture, on global economic trends, Kaushik Basu discussed the Bank’s adoption of “shared prosperity” as a priority goal. The emphasis not just on extreme poverty but also on inequality parallels developments in Catholic social thought in recent years. As inequality has sharpened—the wealth of the richest global 1 percent is likely to soon surpass that of the other 99 percent—Francis has addressed it as “the root of social evil” and a threat to the global common good.

 

Accompaniment. A cross-cutting current within the blogs—the importance of personal engagement with the poor in a spirit of mutual respect—points to a difference of emphasis between the Bank and the Church. As an intergovernmental institution with a secular ethos, the Bank cannot approach human dignity as grounded in transcendence or in a Gospel command of love. Francis’ radical call to accompany the poor in their struggle makes development a personal, as well as a political, imperative.

 

Ultimately the World Bank, like the Catholic Church and other faith communities, acknowledges the importance of personal engagement in advancing social and political goals. Any appeal to rid the world of poverty involves a call to individual conscience. As Kim reminded the Georgetown students at the close of his lecture, “You are the first generation in the history of the world that can end extreme poverty in your lifetimes.”

Pope Francis sends a letter to the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund as they begin their virtual spring meetings. In his letter, the Pope stresses the importance of developing a just and equal society for all.

In a letter addressed to the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, Pope Francis noted that over the last year, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, "our world has been forced to confront a series of grave and interrelated socio-economic, ecological and political crises".

 

As the groups meet this spring, the Pope stresses that it is his hope that their discussions may contribute to a model of 'recovery' capable of generating new, more inclusive, and sustainable solutions to support the real economy, assisting individuals and communities to achieve their deepest aspirations and the universal common good.

Equal, yet excluded

 

Pope Francis went on to note that "for all our deeply-held convictions that all men and women are created equal, many of our brothers and sisters in the human family, especially those at the margins of society, are effectively excluded from the financial world". The pandemic, he continued, has reminded us that "no one is saved alone". "If we are to come out of this situation as a better, more humane, and solidary world," he said, "new and creative forms of social, political and economic participation must be devised, sensitive to the voice of the poor and committed to including them in the building of our common future", through inclusive projects.

Need for a global plan

 

The Pope then noted that many countries are now consolidating a recovery plan for Covid, but that "there remains an urgent need for a global plan that can create new or regenerate existing institutions, particularly those of global governance, and help to build a new network of international relations for advancing the integral human development of all peoples". This, he explained, means giving poorer and less developed nations an effective share in decision-making and facilitating access to the international market.

 

We cannot overlook the “ecological debt” that exists especially between the global north and south, continued the Pope. "We are, in fact, in debt to nature itself, as well as the people and countries affected by human-induced ecological degradation and biodiversity loss", he added. In this regard, the Pope said, "I believe that the financial industry, which is distinguished by its great creativity, will prove capable of developing agile mechanisms for calculating this ecological debt, so that developed countries can pay it, not only by significantly limiting their consumption of non-renewable energy or by assisting poorer countries to enact policies and programmes of sustainable development, but also by covering the costs of the innovation required for that purpose".

 

He continued, "Central to a just and integrated development is a profound appreciation of the essential objective and end of all economic life, namely the universal common good: Public money should never be disjoined from the public good, and financial markets should be underpinned by laws and regulations aimed at ensuring that they truly work for the common good".

A future for our common home

 

Bringing his letter to a close, the Pope said that it is time to acknowledge that markets do not govern themselves. "Markets need to be underpinned by laws and regulations that ensure they work for the common good, guaranteeing that finance works for the societal goals so much needed in the context of the present global healthcare emergency."

 

Finally, the Pope expressed his hope that in these days of formal deliberations and personal encounters, the two organisations with "bear much fruit from the discernment of wise solutions for a more inclusive and sustainable future. A future where finance is at the service of the common good, where the vulnerable and the marginalized are placed at the centre, and where the earth, our common home, is well cared for"

The Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, officially the Treaty of Non-Aggression between Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics,[1][2] and also known as the Hitler–Stalin Pact[3][4] and the Nazi–Soviet Pact,[5] was a non-aggression pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, with a secret protocol establishing Soviet and German spheres of influence across Eastern Europe.[6]

The pact was signed in Moscow on 24 August 1939 (backdated 23 August 1939) by Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov and German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop.[7]

 

The treaty was the culmination of negotiations around the 1938–1939 deal discussions, after tripartite discussions with the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and France had broken down, and committed neither government would aid or ally itself with an enemy of the other, for the next 10 years. Under the Secret Protocol, Poland was to be shared, while Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Bessarabia went to the Soviet Union.

The protocol also recognized the interest of Lithuania in the Vilnius region. In the west, rumoured existence of the Secret Protocol was proven only when it was made public during the Nuremberg trials.[8]

 

A week after signing the pact, on 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland.

On 17 September, one day after a Soviet–Japanese ceasefire came into effect after the Battles of Khalkhin Gol,[9] and one day after the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union approved the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact,[10]

Stalin, stating concern for ethnic Ukrainians and Belarusians in Poland, ordered the Soviet invasion of Poland. After a short war ending in military defeat for Poland, Germany and the Soviet Union drew up a new border between them on formerly Polish territory in the supplementary protocol of the German–Soviet Boundary and Friendship Treaty.

 

In March 1940, parts of the Karelia, and eastern parts of Salla and Kuusamo regions as well, in Finland were annexed by the Soviet Union following the Winter War.

The Soviet annexation of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and parts of Romania (Bessarabia, Northern Bukovina and the Hertsa region) followed.

Stalin's invasion of Bukovina in 1940 violated the pact, since it went beyond the Soviet sphere of influence that had been agreed with the Axis.[11]

 

The territories of Poland annexed by the Soviet Union following the 1939 Soviet invasion east of the Curzon line remained in the Soviet Union after the war and are now in Ukraine and Belarus.

Vilnius was given to Lithuania. Only Podlaskie and a small part of Galicia east of the San River, around Przemyśl, were returned to Poland.

Of all the other territories annexed by the Soviet Union in 1939–1940, those detached from Finland (Western Karelia, Hanko) Estonia (Estonian Ingria and Petseri County) and Latvia (Abrene) remain part of Russia, the successor state to the Russian SFSR and the Soviet Union after the collapse of the USSR in 1991.

The territories annexed from Romania were also integrated into the Soviet Union (such as the Moldavian SSR, or oblasts of the Ukrainian SSR). The core of Bessarabia now forms Moldova.

Northern Bessarabia, Northern Bukovina and the Hertsa region now form the Chernivtsi Oblast of Ukraine. Southern Bessarabia is part of the Odessa Oblast, which is also now in Ukraine.

 

The pact was terminated on 22 June 1941, when Germany launched Operation Barbarossa and invaded the Soviet Union, in pursuit of the ideological goal of Lebensraum.[12]

The Anglo-Soviet Agreement succeeded it. After the war, Ribbentrop was convicted of war crimes at the Nuremberg trials and executed in 1946, whilst Molotov died in 1986.

On 10 April 2010, a Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft operating Polish Air Force Flight 101 crashed near the Russian city of Smolensk, killing all 96 people on board.

Among the victims were the president of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, and his wife, Maria; the former president of Poland-in-exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski; the chief of the Polish General Staff and other senior Polish military officers;

the president of the National Bank of Poland; Polish government officials; 18 members of the Polish parliament; senior members of the Polish clergy; and relatives of victims of the Katyn massacre.

The group was arriving from Warsaw to attend an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the massacre, which took place not far from Smolensk.

 

The pilots were attempting to land at Smolensk North Airport — a former military airbase — in thick fog, with visibility reduced to about 500 metres (1,600 ft). The aircraft descended far below the normal approach path until it struck trees, rolled, inverted and crashed into the ground, coming to rest in a wooded area a short distance from the runway.[2]

 

Both the Russian and Polish official investigations found no technical faults with the aircraft, and concluded that the crew failed to conduct the approach in a safe manner in the given weather conditions. The Polish authorities found serious deficiencies in the organization and training of the Air Force unit involved, which was subsequently disbanded. Several high-ranking members of the Polish military resigned following pressure from politicians and the media.

 

Various conspiracy theories have been circulated alleging that the plane had been deliberately brought down by the Russians in an act of political assassination, and that the 2011 investigations constituted a cover-up and that the Polish government of the time — primarily controlled by the Civic Platform party as opposed to Lech Kaczyński's Law and Justice party — was complicit in or aware of the plot, or at least aided in the efforts to cover it up.[3]

These conspiracy theories are regularly promoted by Law and Justice, particularly by party leader Jarosław Kaczyński (twin brother of Lech Kaczyński) and deputy party leader Antoni Macierewicz.[4][5][6][7]

Following Law and Justice's return to government, a new investigation was opened into the disaster, chaired by Macierewicz; its 2022 conclusion alleged a Russian plot.[8][9]

The new report did not produce any evidence that could conclusively challenge the 2011 reports,[3] was later indicated to have been the subject of tampered evidence,[10] and was revoked in December 2023 after a non-Law and Justice government came into power.[11][12]

DC Judge Beryl Howell loves to shoot off her mouth when it comes to the president and his supporters. Now she's playing the victim as Trump DOJ uses her own words, and actions, against her.

As the manhunt for American citizens who participated in the events of January 6 accelerated in early 2021, the Biden Department of Justice took an unprecedented approach in the handling of political protesters: demand pretrial detention even for those charged with nonviolent offenses such as obstruction and conspiracy.

 

A special prison for J6ers had been opened in the nation’s capital a few days after Jan 6;individuals from around the country were being transported to the DC gulag after being denied release following an arrest in their home state.Judges in Washington were flooded with DOJ requests to keep J6ers, most of whom had no criminal record,behind bars awaiting trial; judges needed guidance as to how to proceed.

 

So, in stepped Beryl Howell, the chief judge of the D.C. district court at the time.

In February 2021, in another unprecedented move,Howell established what became known as the “Chrestman factors.” Named after William Chrestman, a member of the Proud Boys from Kansas, Howell claimed that“the undeniably traumatic events of January 6” required the courts to ditch the standard practiceof evaluating pretrial detention on an individual basis and instead lump all J6ers together.

 

Howell laid out the “differentiating factors that warrant pretrial detentionof certain defendants facing criminal liability for their participation in the mob.” Judges should, according to Howell, determine whether the defendant was part of a group that planned in advance to go to the Capitol; injured or interfered with police that day; or used “words and movements during the riot” that represented (in her mind) “egregious” misconduct.

 

Over the course of the J6 prosecution, Howell sentenced more than three dozen J6ers to hard time in federal prisons—but not before enduring one of her notorious tongue lashings. For example,she berated a man from Tennessee in 2022 convicted of a single misdemeanor for “engaging in political violence that shook our country.” She also forced the man to acknowledge that Joe Biden won the 2020 election.

 

After running roughshod over J6ers for four years,Howell now insists she is the victim of an “ad hominem attack” by the Trump DOJ, which last week asked Howell to recuse herselffrom presiding over a lawsuit brought by Perkins Coie, the infamous law firm responsible for the Steele dossier.

Protecting Perkins Coie Once Again

 

Perkins Coie is suing the president over his March 6 executive order that accused the firm of “dishonest and dangerous activity” and stripped Perkins Coie employees of security clearances and government contracts. (A good backgrounder here.)

 

The lawsuit landed on Howell’s desk. Given her role overseeing Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into imaginary Trump-Russia election collusion as chief judge—in a lengthy 2018 decision,

 

Howell determined Mueller’s appointment was legal and did not violate the Constitution, a finding directly contradictory of what Judge Aileen Cannon concluded on the same question in 2024—Howell should have stepped aside.

 

She is unquestionably conflicted since Perkins Coie acted as the money laundering machine to conceal the role of Democratic consulting shop Fusion GPS—who hired Christopher Steele, an FBI informant and foreign lobbyist at the time—the Hillary Clinton campaign, and the Democratic National Committee in producing the dirty dossier and peddling it around Washington before and after the 2016 election.

 

But instead of stepping aside from the case, Howell immediately gutted most of the president’s executive order, going so far as to instruct top Trump officials including Attorney General Pam Bondi to notify government agencies “to suspend and rescind any implementation” of three key sections of the president’s directive.

The Trump administration had had enough. (In fact, the week before the Perkins case landed on her desk, Howell issued a scathing 36-page order related to Trump’s firing of a NLRB member, a move Howell repeatedly claimed was “unlawful” and “illegal.” She suggested the president considered himself a “king” and that he “seems intent on pushing the bounds of his office and exercising his power in a manner violative of clear statutory law to test how much the courts will accept the notion of a presidency that is supreme.”)

 

Citing Howell’s involvement in the Mueller probe; her questionable handling of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation including the suggestion Trump was a “flight risk” to justify a nondisclosure order related to Smith’s successful demand for the president’s Twitter data; and her anti-Trump statements made in and out of court, the DOJ asked Howell to recuse in a March 21 motion.

 

“As demonstrated through comments in this proceeding, other judicial proceedings, and in the public, observers might reasonably have concerns about the Court’s impartiality in this matter.Recusal is warranted to ensure these proceedings fair and free from concerns about impartiality,” the DOJ wrote.

Poor Poor Pitiful Me

 

Which prompted an “well I never!”response from the former Democratic Senate staffer and Obama appointee. As is typical for bullies—and there are few bigger bullies inside the DC federal courthouse than Howell—the judge accused the Trump administration of being the bully.And like most bullies when confronted, Howell backed away from her comments and actionsin an attempt to portray them as anodyne judicial observations rather than the clearly partisan and at some points vicious attacks they represented.

 

The DOJ’s detailed account of her open hostility toward Trump and his supporters, Howell argued, represented “innuendo,” an “attack [on] the messenger,” and an attempt to “impugn the integrity of the federal judicial system”—as if Howell and her cohorts are not the ones responsible for the public’s all-time low trust in the judiciary.

 

Her keynote speech at a November 2023 dinner emceed by former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who called Howell a “mentor,” and attended by known Trump saboteurs Lisa Monaco (deputy attorney general at the time), Sally Yates, and Andrew Weissmann had an “apolitical, nonpartisan theme,”Howell insisted. Her obvious shots at the president, intended to gratify the Trump haters including herself in attendance at the dinner, have been “twist[ed]” and “mischaracterize[d]” by the DOJ.

 

But it is Howell, not the Trump administration, now mischaracterizing her comments and conduct in court. Far from being the victim, Howell is one of the chief instigators leading the decade-long legal and judicial assault against the president, his lawyers, his associates, his campaign aides, and his voters. Not only should she be removed from this case and any case related to the president, but she should also step down from the federal bench as a disgrace to the robe she wears and the threat she poses to American jurisprudence.

Taliban releases American detained in Afghanistan

An American woman who has been held by the Taliban in Afghanistan has been freed, former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad said Saturday.

 

“American citizen Faye Hall, just released by the Taliban, is now in the care of our friends, the Qataris in Kabul, and will soon be on her way home,”Khalilzad said in a post on X.

 

His post featured a photo of Hall smiling and sitting between two men. It was not clear who the two men are.

 

A Taliban spokesperson confirmed to NBC News that a female U.S. citizen was freed Saturday. The spokesperson said she was handed over to a group who negotiated her release with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

 

Khalilzad did not give further details on the circumstances of Hall’s release. The U.S. State Department did not immediately reply to NBC News’ request for confirmation.

 

Hall had been detained in Afghanistan since February on charges of using a drone without authorization, The Associated Press reported.

 

President Donald Trump shared a video of Hall on his Truth Social account Saturday afternoon.

 

In the video, Hall said she voted for Trump twice and that she is so happy he is in office, calling this “the new era.”

 

“Thank you for bringing me home, and I’ve never been so proud to be an American citizen,” Hall said in the video posted by Trump.

 

Earlier this month, American George Glezmann, who had been held by the Taliban for two years, was released in a separate deal brokered by Qatar.

 

Officials from the Trump administration had been engaged with Taliban representatives to secure Glezmann’s release.

 

“The Taliban government agreed to free him as a goodwill gesture to ⁦‪@POTUS‬⁩ and the American people,” Khalilzad said of Glezmann in a March 20 post on X.

 

He was not part of a prisoner exchange.

 

Glezmann was in the country in December 2022 on a five-day trip to “explore the cultural landscape and rich history of the country,” according to a bill filed in the Senate calling for his release.

 

He was arrested by the Taliban and held without charge. Taliban officials in the intelligence department told NBC News they believed he was a spy.

 

Afghanistan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry also said the move was a “goodwill gesture” in a post on X at the time. In a statement, the Taliban said the meeting between the U.S. and Afghan officials was a “significant step in rebuilding diplomatic engagement.”

 

The Taliban has been in control of Afghanistan, one of the poorest countries in the world, since August 2021, when it ousted U.S.-backed President Ashraf Ghani shortly after the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country.

 

“Continued discussions could pave the way for broader political and economic cooperation between the two countries,” the Taliban statement from earlier this month added.

 

The group has been eager to re-engage with foreign entities.

This website is really nice. There’s such a wonderful thing as being a pot educator. This place has a free 15 hour certification. It’s all about the pot taking business.

 

The first part of the certification course is kinda cringe because they talk about the word marijuana being rayciss, but if u hang in there and keep listening and going through each session, it’s extremely informative and empowering, kmao. They spend the whole first part after the cringe part talking about why it’s ok to have a criminal offense for pot taking, etc kek.

 

So the first part is law and then the next part is from seed to selling. This is for the state of NY, but it makes everything so much easier to understand and then be able to navigate through your outn state etc.

NEW YORK – When a protester was caught on video in January at a New York rally against Israel, only her eyes were visible between a mask and headscarf. But days later, photos of her entire face, along with her name and employer, were circulated online.

 

“Months of them hiding their faces went down the drain!” a fledgling technology company boasted in a social media post, claiming its facial-recognition tool had identified the woman despite the coverings.

 

She was anything but a lone target. The same software was also used to review images taken during months of pro-Palestinian marches at U.S. colleges. A right-wing Jewish group said some people identified with the tool were on a list of names it submitted to President Donald Trump's administration, urging that they be deported in accordance with his call for the expulsion of foreign students who participated in “pro-jihadist” protests.

 

Other pro-Israel groups have enlisted help from supporters on campuses, urging them to report foreign students who participated in protests against the war in Gaza to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.

 

The push to identify masked protesters using facial recognition and turn them in is blurring the line between public law enforcement and private groups. And the efforts have stirred anxiety among foreign students worried that activism could jeopardize their legal status.

 

“It’s a very concerning practice. We don’t know who these individuals are or what they’re doing with this information,” said Abed Ayoub, national executive director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. “Essentially the administration is outsourcing surveillance.”

 

It’s unclear whether names from outside groups have reached top government officials. But concern about the pursuit of activists has risen since the March 8 arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student of Palestinian descent who helped lead demonstrations against Israel’s conduct of the war.

 

Immigration officers also detained a Tufts University student from Turkey outside Boston this week, and Trump and other officials have said that more arrests of international students are coming.

 

“Now they're using tools of the state to actually go after people,” said a Columbia graduate student from South Asia who has been active in protests and spoke on condition of anonymity because of concerns about losing her visa. “We suddenly feel like we're being forced to think about our survival.”

 

Uncertainty about the consequences

 

Ayoub said he is concerned, in part, that groups bent on exposing pro-Palestinian activists will make mistakes and single out students who did nothing wrong.

 

Some groups pushing for deportations say their focus is on students whose actions go beyond marching in protests, to those taking over campus buildings and inciting violence against Jewish students.

 

“If you're here, right, on a student visa causing civil unrest … assaulting people on the streets, chanting for people's death, why the heck did you come to this country?” said Eliyahu Hawila, a software engineer who built the tool designed to identify masked protesters and outed the woman at the January rally.

 

He has forwarded protesters’ names to groups pressing for them to be deported, disciplined, fired or otherwise punished.

 

“If we want to argue that this is freedom of speech and they can say it, fine, they can say it,” Hawila said. “But that doesn’t mean that you will escape the consequences of society after you say it.”

 

Pro-Israel groups that circulated the protester's photo claim that she was soon fired by her employer. An employee who answered the phone at the company confirmed that the woman had not worked there since early this year. In a brief phone conversation, the protester, who has not been charged with any wrongdoing, declined to comment on the advice of an attorney….

But the use of facial-recognition technology by private groups enters territory previously reserved largely for law enforcement, said attorney Sejal Zota, who represents a group of California activists in a lawsuit against facial recognition companyClearviewAI.

Police have raided a Quaker meeting house and arrested six women attending a gathering of the protest group Youth Demand.

 

More than 20 uniformed police, some equipped with Tasers, forced their way into the Westminster meeting house at 7.15pm, according to a statement by the Quakers.

 

“No one has been arrested in a Quaker meeting house in living memory,” said Paul Parker, the recording clerk for Quakers in Britain.

 

“This aggressive violation of our place of worship and the forceful removal of young people holding a protest group meeting clearly shows what happens when a society criminalises protest.

 

“Freedom of speech, assembly, and fair trials are an essential part of free public debate which underpins democracy.”

 

In a video posted on Youth Demand’s Facebook page, a woman who claimed to have attended the meeting described it as a “publicly advertised welcome talk” about the group. She said police seized attenders’ phones and laptops.

 

Youth Demand describes itself as “a youth-led nonviolent civil resistance campaign demanding the UK stops arming Israel and cancels all new oil and gas granted since 2021”.

 

The Quakers’ statement said they “strongly condemned the violation of their place of worship” and pointed to the stricter protesting laws brought in by the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023, which they claimed were directly responsible for the raid.

 

The Met police said it had arrested six people at the meeting on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance. It said it arrested five other people for the same offence on Friday – four in London and one in Exeter.

 

The police said those arrested were part of Youth Demand and claimed those attending the meeting were planning direct action in the capital next month.

 

“Youth Demand have stated an intention to ‘shut down’ London over the month of April using tactics including ‘swarming’ and road blocks,” police said.

 

“While we absolutely recognise the importance of the right to protest, we have a responsibility to intervene to prevent activity that crosses the line from protest into serious disruption and other criminality.”

 

Police said all those arrested had been released on bail, except for one who was released and will face no further action.

 

Quakers, a nickname for members of the Religious Society of Friends, follow a religious tradition that grew from Protestant Christianity in the 17th century.
