Iran addresses Trump bombing threat at UN Security Council

Tehran has urged international action against the US president’s “reckless and belligerent” remarks

 

Iran has lodged a formal complaint with the United Nations Security Council over US President Donald Trump’s threats of military action, branding his remarks “reckless and belligerent.”

 

Trump recently threatened Iran with bombing strikes “the likes of which it has never seen” if it does not accept a nuclear deal. The Iranian leadership condemned the statement and vowed retaliation if attacked.

 

In a letter to the Security Council on Monday, Iranian UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani accused the US of committing an “egregious violation of international law.”

 

Tehran “strongly warns against any military adventurism and will respond swiftly and decisively to any act of aggression or attack by the United States or its proxy, the Israeli regime, against its sovereignty, territorial integrity, or national interests,” the letter read.

 

The document also urged the international body to “fulfil its responsibility under the UN Charter to maintain international peace and security”and to “unequivocally condemn” the US threats.(that’s not gonna happen)

 

In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump threatened to attack Iran if it does not accept a deal to wind down its nuclear program.

 

“If they don’t make a deal there will be bombing. And it will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before,” he was quoted as saying.

 

The escalating rhetoric follows years of tension over Tehran’s nuclear program. During his first presidential term, Trump unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), an international agreement to scale down the Iranian nuclear program in return for the easing of international sanctions.

 

Following the US withdrawal and resumed sanctions, Iran reportedly reduced its compliance with the agreement.

 

International Atomic Energy Agency head Rafael Grossi said in December that Iran was ramping up its enrichment of uranium to 60% purity and expressed concern. The material needs to be around 90% enriched to be considered weapons-grade.

 

Iran has long insisted that its nuclear program is peaceful and legal under “international frameworks.”

 

In early March, Trump said he sent a letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei suggesting that talks on the deal be resumed and specifying that he was giving Iran two months to comply.

 

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian responded by calling on Washington to first rebuild trust with Tehran. During a cabinet meeting on Sunday, Pezeshkian refused direct talks but said “the path of indirect negotiations is open.”

A Colorado man facing two federal felony charges for allegedly firebombing a Tesla dealership denies a suggestion from the US Attorney General that he was trying to “run” from authorities.

 

Cooper Frederick, 24, of Fort Collins, is charged with possession of an unregistered destructive device and malicious attempted destruction of property in the March 7 attackon Tesla property in Loveland, Colorado.

 

“An incendiary device was ignited and thrown at the Tesla building, landing between two vehicles,” the Loveland Police Department said in a news release. “Several people inside, who were cleaning the building, were put at risk; however, our responding officer quickly extinguished the fire, preventing further harm.”

 

Multiple Tesla locations around the country have been attacked in recent weeks with gunfire and Molotov cocktails, law enforcement agencies report.

 

The Trump administration is calling those incidents “domestic terrorism” intended to intimidate White House adviser Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla.

 

Frederick was arrested March 13 on state charges in the Colorado case,charged with multiple felonies and released on bond the following day, Larimer County jail records show. He was arrested March 28 in Plano, Texas, on federal charges.

 

“Let this be a warning. You can run, but you cannot hide,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a video statement posted to X Monday night.

 

Frederick’s attorney called Bondi’s suggestion that Frederick was on the run a “material misrepresentation” of the case.

 

“Mr. Frederick lived in Colorado until March 19 when the decision was made for him to move home to Texas to live with his parents,”attorney Kelly Page told CNN. “Despite the insinuation by Ms. Bondi that Mr. Frederick fled and was apprehended in Texas, DOJ was notified of this move by counsel, and Mr. Frederick remained fully cooperative with the courts and the investigation until he was arrested on the warrant at his home in Texas.”

 

The Justice Department has mounted a furious response to the attacks on Tesla, launching an FBI task force, promising that attackers would face federal charges and suggesting there would be no plea bargains.

 

“All of these cases are a serious threat to public safety. Therefore, there will be no negotiating,” Bondi said Monday. “We are seeking 20 years in prison.”

 

Frederick has not yet entered a plea in the case and is currently in federal custody without bond. A hearing in the federal case had not yet been set in Colorado as of Tuesday.

 

“We are still in the process of gathering information and facts about the allegations and will rely on the professionalism of the U.S. Attorney in our district to treat Mr. Frederick fairly despite the recent inflammatory press statements from Washington, D.C.,” Page said. “We intend to litigate this case in court, like any other federal criminal matter, and not in the media.”

The Trump administration has suspended several dozen research grants to Princeton, University President Christopher Eisgruber’83 wrote in a campus-wide email on Tuesday.The grants were issued from several federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, NASA, and the Defense Department.

 

The exact amount in question and the reasoning for the pause itself are unclear, and Eisgruber acknowledged only the latter in his statement. But the Daily Caller, a right-wing news organization,reported last night that the government would halt $210 million in federal funding to Princeton due to an ongoing investigation of antisemitism on campus, citing an anonymous Trump official.

 

“Princeton University will comply with the law. We are committed to fighting antisemitism and all forms of discrimination, and we will cooperate with the government in combating antisemitism. Princeton will alsovigorously defend academic freedom and the due process rightsof this University,” Eisgruber’s email read. It also said that the University had been notified of the suspensions yesterday and today. (He shouldn’t insinuate that the Trump Admin is not upholding due process rights.)

 

This pause comes on the heels of recent pauses or cuts to funding at Harvard, Penn, and Columbia. The government also announced yesterday that it would review more than $8 billion in grants at Harvard as part of a federal task force on antisemitism. According to anadministration official said that the funds would be pausedwhile the Department of Education continues to investigate Princeton for allegations of antisemitism under Title VI.The investigation dates back to last April, when Zachary Marschall, the editor-in-chief of the conservative website Campus Reform,filed antisemitism complaints with the Department of Educationagainst Princeton and at least a dozen other universities. Marschall does not have any Princeton affiliation.

Marschall’s complaint cites several instances of alleged antisemitism during the pro-Palestine protests of last year. The complaint includes, among other events,chants from an Oct. 25 walkout, including “Brick by brick, wall by wall, apartheid has got to fall” and calls for “intifada.”

 

The amount paused reported by the Daily Callerwould represent nearly half of Princeton’s government funding pool. The University received $455 million in grants and contracts from government sources in the 2024 fiscal year.

 

Eisgruber has been unusually outspoken about the Trump administration’s threatsto federal university funding, taking to thepages of the Atlanticearlier this month tocriticize the cancellation of $400 million in grants to Columbia University. He reiterated the importance of academic freedom in alater interview to PBSand warned about making concessions to the government, saying that “once you make concessions once, it's hard not to make them again.”

 

Until now,Princeton had received less national scrutiny than many of its peer institutions, especially for its actions during the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment.” The University has not seen any significant high-level administrative turnover in the past year and a half, with Eisgruber being the second longest-serving president in the Ivy League.

 

Butlast week, the University announced it would freeze most faculty hiring and avoid staff growth, a sign that the University perceives that funding threats from the federal government could significantly disrupt its usual operations.

 

In a rare statement yesterday directly from its board of directors, which Eisgruber chairs, theAmerican Association of Universities (AAU) condemned the “withdrawal of research funding for reasons unrelated to research.”The statement did not address the case of any specific school, but the AAU broadly represents a coalition of 70 research universities.

“We urge the administration and Congress … to work through the established Department of Education and Department of Justice procedures for investigating allegations of discrimination,” the statement read. “Following these established procedures is the best way to ensure accountability by universities and to preserve our nation’s place as the global leader in science and innovation.”

The Pentagon this week ordered the elimination of lower physical fitness standards for women in combat units, a move that is likely to hinder the recruitment and retention of women in particularly dangerous military jobs.

 

An order by Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary, dated Sunday and announced on Monday, mandated that all physical fitness requirements for combat arms positions — units likely to see significant fighting in wartime — be “sex-neutral,” which is likely to significantly reduce the number of women who meet the requirements. The order directs military leadership to implement the new fitness standards by the end of October.

 

The U.S. military has fiercely debated the issue of how to fairly grade women’s physical fitness in testing to determine their placement into physically demanding combat jobs and their advancement in leadership roles.

 

After years of internal deliberation over new annual fitness tests, the Army eased the grading standards for women and older service members in 2022. A study by the RAND research corporation published that year found that women and older troops were failing the new test at significantly higher rates than men and younger troops.

 

Other branches of the military have also had different fitness test standards for men and women. For example, the Marines have a strength test for all recruits: Men must complete three pull-ups or 34 push-ups in under two minutes. Women must complete one pull-up or 15 push-ups in the same time frame.

 

Those gender-specific standards will remain for some military jobs, Mr. Hegseth said in a statement accompanying the order. But he argued thatwomen should not be allowed in combat units if they could not meet the same fitness standards as men.

 

Mr. Hegseth has previously opposed the inclusion of women in combat jobs like the infantry, artillery, tank crews and special forces, writing in a recent book that “women cannot physically meet the same standards as men.” He later backtracked on that stance, saying in December that “if we have the right standard and women meet that standard, roger, let’s go.”

 

The struggle over the fitness tests began after the military removed some of the last barriers segregating the genders in the armed forces, opening all combat jobs to women in 2015. (Obama Of Course, "I will fundamentally change America to a weak and fragile country that cannot protect itself!")

 

As women pushed to break new ground and advance into elite combat roles, such as the infantry officer corps and special forces, questions arose over whether women should be held to a different fitness standard to ensure the roles were accessible to them.The most elite jobs, such as the Army Rangers and Navy SEALS, have always mandated equal standards for men and women.

 

In an early, limited rollout of theArmy’s new fitness test, 65 percent of a small set of women failed, while 10 percent of men did. The later independent review by RAND produced similar results: Nearly half of enlisted women in the Army failed the test, while less than 10 percent of their male counterparts did. Maj. Kristen Griest, the first woman Army infantry officer and one of the first two women to graduate from Army Ranger School, wrote an opinion article published in 2021 by The Modern War Institute at West Point thatcalled for gender-neutral fitness testing standards. She argued that lower standards for women “reinforce the belief that women cannot perform the same job as men, therefore making it difficult for women to earn the trust and confidence of their teammates.” (Oh so she’s the one that started this bullshit, sorry but women cannot some of the same jobs as men, they don’t have muscles mass or other things that make men men. I remember reading articles about it years ago. You can never tell with street weed if you're buying bootleg vape cartridges. They claimed the vitamin e acetate was a "thickening agent" added to the cannabis oil to "thicken" the batch. Why smoke a skin care product?

Police arrest man suspected of setting fire to Tesla vehicles at Las Vegas service facility

A man suspected of setting fire to several Tesla vehicles at a repair facility in Las Vegas last week has been arrested, authorities announced Thursday.

 

Police took a manidentified as Paul Kim, 36, into custody on Wednesday evening, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren said during a news conference.

 

Kim is facing multiple felony countsincluding third-degree arson, unlawful possession of explosive and incendiary devices, destroying property and discharging a firearm into a vehicle or structure, Koren said.

 

Later Thursday, Kim was taken from state custody into federal custody, an FBI spokesperson told CNN. Kim now faces federal charges of arson and unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm.

 

Kim appeared in court Monday for a detention hearing, where a federal magistrate judge ruledhe will remain in custody for now, court documents show. Kim’s next hearing is scheduled for April 10. CNN has sought comment from Kim’s attorneys.

 

In a federal complaint filed Thursday, an FBI agent testified that a car seen on several surveillance cameras in the vicinity of the Tesla facility matches Kim’s personal vehicle. His cell phone was also in the area less than an hour before police were first called about the fires, according to the complaint.

 

The FBI discovered thatKim ownsfirearms and equipment consistent with the rounds fired at the Tesla vehicles, the agent said.

 

Koren said a review ofsurveillance footage showsthat around 2:45 a.m. on March 18, someone dressed in all black attire, gloves and with a concealed face approached the Tesla facility and used what appeared to be a rifle to shoot at surveillance cameras.

 

The suspect then sprayed the word“RESIST”in pink paint across the front doors of the facility, Koren said. He proceeded to shoot at multiple vehicles and used a Molotov cocktail to set them on fire.

 

In a search of Kim’s home, agents found pink paint and “multiple black hoodies” and face masks, according to the criminal complaint.They also found what they characterized as a handwritten getaway route from the Tesla facility.

 

Five vehicles were damaged including three that were destroyed, the assistant sheriff said. Koren said authorities are still working to determine a motive. (That’s just stupid, what the motive is? Really?)

 

Police say they believe Kim acted alone and there is currently no threat to the public.

 

Police departments across the United States have been investigating a wave of attacks on showrooms, charging stations and vehicles belonging to Tesla, whose CEO Elon Musk has taken on a controversial federal cost-cutting role in the so-called Department of Government Efficiency.

 

Evans cautioned against the ongoing attacks on Tesla facilities.

 

“There’s nothing courageous or noble about firebombing private property and terrorizing your local community,” Evans said Thursday.“The self-righteous mob that’s cheering you on today to commit acts on violence on their behalf will leave you high and dry and forget about you tomorrow. At the end of day, you and you alone will be held responsible and face the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence.”

 

In a separate incident, 24-year-old Daniel Clarke-Pounder was arrested on criminal chargeslast Tuesday related to an arson at a North Charleston, South Carolina Tesla charging station on March 7, according to the Justice Department. Witnesses reported seeing a man whosprayed an expletive against Trump and “Long Live Ukraine” in red paint in the parking lot, the agency said

“The swarm of violent attacks on Tesla property is nothing short of domestic terrorism,” US Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement.

Surveillance video showed a person dressed in black shooting at the cars and igniting two of them with Molotov cocktails, according to police. One unexploded Molotov cocktail was found inside a third car and is now being examined for evidence.

 

No injuries were reported, and the fire department extinguished the fires before they could reach the vehicles’ batteries.

 

On March 3, seven Tesla charging stations in a mall outside of Boston were set on fire. Five days later in New York City,six protesters were arrested for occupying a showroom. In Colorado, a woman was accused of throwing Molotov cocktailsand vandalizing vehicles and a showroom.

 

“This level of violence is insane and deeply wrong,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on X. “Tesla just makes electric cars and has done nothing to deserve these evil attacks.”

 

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating thelatest incident in Las Vegas, said Spencer Evans, special agent in charge of the FBI Las Vegas Field Office.

 

“To those who might think that something like this is justifiable or potentially even admirable, we want you to know this is a federal crime,” Evans added.

 

Last week, Bondi announced an investigation and vowed to crack down on vandalism against Tesla vehicles and showrooms.

 

“If you’re going to touch a Tesla, go to a dealership, do anything, you better watch out because we’re coming after you. And if you’re funding this, we’re coming after you. We’re going to find out who you are,” Bondi said on Fox Business.

 

While there have been no reports of injuries amid the reports of vandalism, the incidents pose a potential financial problem for Tesla. The company faces declining sales for the first time because of increased competition and backlash over Musk’s contentious role in the Trump administration. (CNN saying, “see it’s not that bad”)

 

Tesla recently reported the first drop in annual sales in its history, and there are indications sales could be down again this quarter. While overall electric vehicle sales in Europe surged by 34% in January, sales of Teslas plummeted 50%. Tesla’s sales fell 29% in China — the company’s second-largest market after the United States — in the first two months of the year, according to Reuters.

 

And Tesla’s US sales dropped 16% between December and January, according to an estimate from Cox Automotive.
