Lin Shen also mentioned that on April 9, the United States temporarily postponed imposing a 46% tariff on Vietnam for 90 days.

This decision brought relief to Vietnam and encouraged many Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers, who had been waiting on the sidelines after the announcement of the US's "global tariff" policy, to increase their investments in Vietnam. Lin Shen recently visited Bình Dương and Xining and observed that Chinese factories are widespread in the region.

However, the US's tariff delay is temporary, not permanent. Vietnam has recently reached a preliminary trade agreement with the US, with Vietnam promising to strictly control the re-export of Chinese goods. This move could have a significant impact on Chinese manufacturers. Lin Shen noted that if Vietnam strictly limits re-export trade, some Chinese exporters may turn to countries like Malaysia or Indonesia. Nonetheless, thanks to continued investments from companies like Samsung, Apple, and Nike, Vietnam's foreign trade position remains strong.

Lin Shen remains optimistic about Vietnam, seeing it as "the next Guangdong."

Multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos's bride-to-be, Lauren Sánchez, and popstar Katy Perry are set to blast off to space on Monday for an all-female flight. Perry and Sánchez are part of an all-women crew, which also includes journalist and TV presenter Gayle King, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and entrepreneur and former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe.

 

The six-woman crew will blast off on Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin rocket from the company's launch site in Texas at 8.30 am local time on Monday for an 11-minute-long suborbital flight to the edge of space and back. The mission is part of Blue Origin's New Shepard programme, named NS-31, and aims to "create a lasting impact that will inspire generations."

 

This will be the first flight to space in over 60 years without a man on board, since Russian engineer Valentina Tereshkova travelled to space solo.

DeSantis’ Hope Florida scrutiny deepens amid new revelations on $10M payment 1/2

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Part of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ crusade to defeat a Florida recreational pot ballot measure received $10 million from two groups that got money from a nonprofit associated with first lady Casey DeSantis’ community-based assistance program.

 

Hope Florida has received heightened scrutiny over whether it improperly received money intended for the state. Two organizations said to Hope Florida in letters that they did not use the money for political activity. But the groups wound up giving money to the effort to defeat the pot amendment within days of receiving it from the Hope Florida Foundation.

 

The program, launched by the first lady, discussed a partnership with a Florida Chamber of Commerce initiative that helped Gov. DeSantis defeat Amendment 3. A review of state election records shows the sameFlorida Chamber of Commerce initiative also provided the campaign led by Gov. DeSantis close to $5 million in the two weeks before the November election.

 

Despite the timing, letters provided by the foundation that oversees Hope Florida show $5 million was given to the chamber’s Secure Florida’s Future initiative in response to a proposal that would promote the first lady’s program and help recruit business partners in the future.

 

A proposal letter sent to Hope Florida promised that the chamber-led initiative, which also took part in efforts to defeat Amendment 3 in last year’s election, would not use the $5 million grant for political or election purposes.

 

Florida Chamber President Mark Wilson wrote the money would be put toward a long-term targeted business partner recruitment strategy and public awareness campaign.

 

“By utilizing our network of robust communications and outreach channels serving our hundreds of thousands of employer- and business organization-members representing every industry, sector and region of Florida,” Wilson wrote in the letter.

 

The Hope Florida board gave another $5 million to Save Our Society from Drugs, a St. Petersburg-based organization aimed at preventing drug use and increasing access to recovery programs.

 

“The importance of this work cannot be overstated,” Amy Ronshausen, executive director of Save Our Society from Drugs, wrote in the letter. “Drug use continues to have a devastating impact on families, the workforce, and community health.”

 

Hope Florida was launched by Casey DeSantis four years ago as a community-based welfare initiative designed to reduce the need for government-subsidized programs. Gov. DeSantis asked the Legislature this year to put Hope Florida into state law, spurring a financial review that left state House leaders with questions and concerns about how taxpayer dollars have been spent.

 

Casey DeSantis is considering a run for governor to succeed her husband, who is term-limited and cannot run again. Gov. DeSantis has repeatedly touted the initiative and praised his wife’s efforts to put it together.

 

Last week, Florida’s House Health Care Budget Subcommittee spent more than an hour asking the state Agency for Health Care Administration about $10 million that was donated to Hope Florida as part of a settlement agreement with the state’s largest Medicaid operator. The AHCA settlement was included in the minutes of an Oct. 14 board meeting of the Hope Florida Foundation.

 

The board minutes also bring up a “strategic partnership” between Hope Florida and Secure Florida’s Future.

 

The Hope Florida board minutes refer to the partnership with Secure Florida’s Future as a grant proposal that was developed by the “Department and Executive Administration,” to engage with business and community partners and advance Hope Florida’s mission.

 

“Secure Florida’s Future is uniquely positioned to enhance awareness of Hope Florida’s efforts within the private sector using a data-driven approach,” the minutes said.

 

Hope Florida is a nonprofit organization associated with the Florida Department of Children and Families, which convinced a joint-legislative committee to approve the transfer of $20.7 million in unspent Covid federal housing assistance money to Hope Florida.

This transfer of funds was approved on Oct. 24 — about the time the Hope Florida board discussed the grant proposal and partnership with the chamber’s anti-pot initiative. The Hope Florida board minutes also discuss memos that were created to memorialize each cash disbursement approved by the panel. DCF could not provide the memos on Friday, but Tori Cuddy, an agency strategic initiatives manager, provided a Friday evening statement that said the more than $20 million funds transfer involved unspent administrative dollars from the housing assistance program that were already due to DCF.The money did not go to the Hope Florida Foundation.

 

“The Department receives requests through Hope Florida for housing assistance and is using the remaining funds to address rental and/or utility assistance through Hope Florida, which is open to any Floridian,” Cuddy wrote.

 

The Hope Florida Foundation board is chaired by Joshua Hay, who was asked by state House Health Care Budget Subcommittee Chair Alex Andrade to explain the program's finances during a meeting on Wednesday. Andrade said during a Wednesday night podcast withformer Rep. Matt Gaetz that if Hay or the other board members fail to appear, he will issue subpoenas to obtain financial records.

 

The scrutiny of Hope Florida by the state House prompted DeSantis to lash out, accusing the chamber and House Speaker Daniel Perez (R-Miami) of working against other state Republicans. Andrade has also taken heat from DeSantis after he accused the administration of breaking the law by misusing state settlement funds when it brokered a $10 million donation that went to Hope Florida in the last weeks before the November election.

 

The donation was made by the state’s largest Medicaid managed care operator, Centene, as part of a $67 million settlement involving the operator’s pharmacy benefit manager. During a Thursday news conference, DeSantis said the $67 million deal was the best that staffers with the state Agency for Health Care Administration could negotiate with Centene, saying the case was not very strong.

 

However, Centene wrote in a statement provided to POLITICO on Friday that ACHA directed the terms of the settlement along with the state Attorney General’s office.

 

The settlement agreement was signed on Sept. 27 by Chief Deputy Attorney General John Guard, then-AHCA Secretary Jason Weida, and Florida Insurance Commissioner Michael Yaworsky.

 

“The allocation of funds detailed in the settlement document was directed by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) and approved by the Florida Attorney General’s Office,” the Centene statement said. “Centene had no part in or knowledge of any decision by the Hope Florida Foundation regarding the subsequent use of any Foundation funds."

 

The political committee that was set up to oppose Amendment 3 was chaired by James Uthmeier, then also working as chief of staff for DeSantis. DeSantis appointed him as Florida’s attorney general earlier this year.

 

Campaign records show Keep Florida Clean received $4.85 million from Secure Florida’s Future, most of it coming in October after the Hope Florida Foundation approved the grant. Save our Society from Drugs donated $5.75 million as well, with most of the money coming in late October.

 

Keep Florida Clean in October steered $11.5 million to the Republican Party of Florida, which wound up airing more than $16 million worth of television ads opposed to Amendment 3, according to an analysis done by AdImpact. One of the ads featured Casey DeSantis, as well as a top official in the Florida Highway Patrol, urging voters to defeat the amendment.

 

Uthmeier did not respond to a request for comment Friday about the transactions between Hope Florida Foundation and the political committee he led to defeat the amendment.

 

Keep Florida Clean recently shut down. But before it did, the committee sent more than $1.2 million to the Florida Freedom Fund, another committee led by Uthmeier that DeSantis has said he plans to use to help aid candidates in the 2026 election.

VIROQUA, Wis. – The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of 51-year-old Jacob Sell after several days of what the Sheriff’s Office calls a “barrage” of harassing, intimidating, and profane telephone calls to the Sheriff’s Office Communications Center. The Sheriff’s Office goes on to say the frequent calls over the course of several days culminated Thursday morning when Sell came to the Sheriff’s Office disrupting communications and operations while staff were busy serving the community during a winter storm. Sell was taken into custody Thursday morning, December 19, at approximately 6:30 a.m., at the Sheriff’s Office.

 

Sell has a history of altercations with law enforcement including previous incidents at the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office and with the La Farge Police. In September, Sell defended himself in a two day trial on several charges that stemmed from the La Farge Police trying to enforce an ordinance in the village regarding unregistered vehicles on city streets. Village Police ticketed an RV owned by Sell and parked on a city street. Sell tried to stop police officers from taking the vehicle to the county impound and later had an altercation with officers at the Village offices.

 

Additional charges were filed when Sell went to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office to retrieve personal belongings that were in the impounded vehicle. Sheriff’s Office personnel, including dispatchers, testified that Sell was making disturbance in the public lobby at the Sheriff’s Office and making it difficult for dispatchers to do their job.

 

Sell was also charged with criminal damage to property for damage to his cell after he was taken into custody for plugging drains and flooding the area as well tampering with other parts of the cell including destroying a mattress. Sell made claims in court that he was mistreated by the Sheriff’s Office while in custody including being placed in solitary confinement for “72 hours”, deprived of water, and being restrained in a “Hannibal Lecter chair” for 3.5 hrs.

 

Sell also faced a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia for items found in his RV but those charges were later dropped when Sell argued the items could have other uses.

 

Sell also faced a bail jumping charge when police said they spotted him in a location in the village he was not allowed to be while on probation.

 

From all those incidents Sell went to trial on:

 

Bail jumping – found not guilty by jury

Possession of drug paraphernalia – dismissed by prosecutor

Possession of THC – found not guilty by jury

Disorderly conduct – found not guilty by jury

Two counts of criminal damage to property – found guilty by jury

At trial Sell argued his own case and convinced the jury to find him not guilty on three of the charges and was able to convince the court to dismiss the possession of drug paraphernalia charge. Sell successfully convinced the jury the disturbance in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office was protected under his right to free speech and did not impede the work of the office. On the disorderly conduct charge related to the altercation with officers when they were impounding the vehicle Sell argued the village had not communicated the RV was a problem other than placing the ticket on the windshield, and he was within his rights to try to prevent the removal. Sell was also able to convince the jury that their was not clear evidence of possession of THC in the amounts required to be charged.

The jury did find there was enough evidence from testimony by jail staff that Sell had caused the damage to county property to find him guilty on that charge.

 

Sell argued to the jury throughout the trial that he was being targeted by police chief because they did not like him. Police Chief Steve Palmer testified that contacts with Sell would often turn confrontational and Sell would sometimes call him at his home and verbally harass him.

 

As a result of this most recent incident with the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office Sell was booked into the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center for unlawful use of telephone, disorderly conduct, and harassment. The defendant appeared in Vernon County Circuit Court on Thursday, at 1:00 p.m., and was released on a $1,000 signature bond with the following conditions of release:

 

No contact with the Village of La Farge police chief unless it is an emergency

No contact with the Village of La Farge police chief’s personal residence nor the chief’s family

No contact with the Village of La Farge Police Department unless it is an emergency and only after calling 911

No contact with the Village of La Farge village hall or employees except by mail for official business

No contact with the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office unless it is an emergency. Sell is allowed to contact the Sheriff’s Office by mail for official business. The court specifically included Dispatch and Corrections in the no contact prohibition.

Sell is due back in Vernon County Circuit Court on January 8 at 8:30 a.m. Formal charges will be sought through Vernon County District Attorney Angela Palmer-Fisher. A charge is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

 

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the time of arrest was the Viroqua Police Department. Also assisting in the investigation was the La Farge Police Department and Vernon County Information Technology Department.

 

The Sheriff’s Office states no more details will be released until the court case is concluded.

 

Sheriff Roy Torgerson expressed his gratitude to his staff for how they handled the incident.

 

“Besides the defendant’s constitutionally protected presumption of innocence,” said Torgerson. “I would like to thank not only my deputies that took an oath, but all staff who worked tirelessly, in many difficult situations to protect the defendant’s first amendment right to free speech. I want to thank my staff for their dedication, patience, and highest level of professionalism communicating with the defendant as he expressed his grievances.”

The investigation into the incident continues.

Sell appeared in Vernon County Court Friday.

 

According to the Vernon County District Attorney's Office, Sell was released on a $250.00 bond with eight conditions including no contact with the La Farge Police Chief unless an emergency, no contact with La Farge Village Hall, no contact with the Vernon County Sheriff's Office unless an emergency.

 

Sell has more charges in Marquette County.

I didn't know it was Easter Sunday today but I did decide to start taking my faith in Jesus seriously again. Every time I stray I bump into the same monotonous evil stuff. It seems different on the surface but when I really think about its just the same dopamine hit seeking behavior just rebranded. I'm trying to get my life on track and be more grateful. I wanted to go to mass, and I should have. Actually went for an ATV ride, and the battery died on me when I stopped at a park. A guy in a van helped jump my battery so I could get home, and it reminded me that there is good in the world. My bad attitude has been keeping me from seeing it.
