Trump Considers Releasing Biden-Hur Audio

Trump administration officials are preparing to release the audio from special counsel Robert Hur's interview with former President Joe Biden during the mishandling of classified documents investigation.

 

Hur said he did not criminally charge Biden with mishandling documents due to the president's age and mental acuity following the October 2023 interview.

 

In May 2024, Biden asserted executive privilege over audio of the interview. The transcript had been released two months earlier.

 

Biden and his staff are girding for the possible release, though it remained unclear whether President Donald Trump and his advisers have made a final decision to make the audio public, Politico reported Wednesday night.

 

"The Hur audio will confirm what is one of the biggest cover ups in American history," Mike Davis, an occasional Trump adviser, told Politico.

 

The media outlet later reported that the former president had hired Chris Meagher, a former deputy press secretary and Defense Department spokesperson, to help schedule appearances and defend the former president's legacy.

 

Last month, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Americans would be "quite interested" to hear the audio recordings of Hur's interview with Biden

 

"I don't have an update on that, but I can certainly check," Leavitt said April 8 after being asked if the audio would be released. "I think the American people would be quite interested to hear that tape, but I'll double-check on the release of it."

 

The House Judiciary Committee last year sued to obtain the audio but that lawsuit has lingered since Trump took office.

 

Two Freedom of Information Act lawsuits brought by conservative groups have resulted in the Justice Department facing a May 20 deadline to say whether it will stand by Biden's assertion of executive privilege to block the release of the audio.

 

Until now, DOJ officials have said disclosure of the audio would invade Biden's privacy and could help convince other government officials to cooperate in future investigations.

 

The transcript of the interview indicated Biden lied to the American people when he rebuked Hur for asking about his son's death.

 

The transcript exposes the fact Hur never asked Biden about the timing of his son's death, contradicting the president's indignant public objections to that supposed line of questioning.

DOJ, FBI Sound Alarm About Online Child Predator Group

Federal law enforcement is sounding the alarm over an online child predator network called "764," with the FBI saying it has opened 250 investigations across all of its 55 field offices into a group an agent said looks to "sow chaos" and "bring down society."

 

The loose network of violent predators befriend teenagers through popular online platforms and then coerce them into escalating sexual and violent behavior, ABC News reported Wednesday.

 

"We see a lot of bad things, but this is one of the most disturbing things we're seeing," FBI Assistant Director David Scott told ABC News. He heads the FBI's Counterterrorism Division, which is now leading many of the government's investigations tied to 764.

 

On April 30, the Department of Justice announced the arrests of two alleged 764 leaders. Leonidas Varagiannis, 21, a U.S. citizen residing in Thessaloniki, Greece, and Prasan Nepal, 20, of North Carolina, were charged with operating an international child exploitation enterprise. Varagiannis was arrested April 29 in Greece; and Nepal on April 22 in North Carolina. Court hearings in Washington, D.C., are pending for both defendants.

 

"These defendants are accused of orchestrating one of the most heinous online child exploitation enterprises we have ever encountered – a network built on terror, abuse, and the deliberate targeting of children," Attorney General Pam Bondi said April 30 in a statement. "We will find those who exploit and abuse children, prosecute them, and dismantle every part of their operation."

 

Scott said the FBI has seen victims as young as 9, and federal authorities have indicated there could be thousands of victims from around the world, according to ABC News. Prosecutors alleged that Varagiannis and Nepal exploited at least eight minor victims across multiple jurisdictions, with some content traced back to children as young as 13. The network’s activities spanned from late 2020 through early 2025, with core leadership roles attributed to both defendants throughout that time.

 

Scott described one of the main goals of 764 and similar networks is to "sow chaos" and "bring down society." That's why the FBI's Counterterrorism Division and the DOJ’s National Security Division are now looking at 764 and its offshoots as a potential form of domestic terrorism, even coining a new term to characterize the most heinous actors: "nihilistic violent extremists."

 

"The more gore, the more violence … that raises their stature within the groups," Scott told ABC News. "So, it's sort of a badge of honor within some of these groups to actually do the most harm to victims."

 

According to an ABC News review of cases from across the country, state and federal authorities over the past few years have arrested at least 15 people on child pornography or weapons-related charges, and accused them in court of being associated with 764.

 

In a federal case, a 24-year-old Arkansas man, Jairo Tinajero, plotted to murder a 14-year-old girl who was resisting his demands. When he pleaded guilty to conspiracy and child pornography charges three months ago, Tinajero said he believed the murder would raise his stature within the 764 network, according to ABC News. His sentencing is set for August.

 

In another federal case, Jack Rocker, 19, of Tampa, Florida, amassed a collection of more than 8,300 videos and images that the DOJ called "some of the most horrific, evil content available on the Internet." He pleaded guilty in January to possessing child sexual abuse material and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

The air traffic system meltdown at Newark Liberty International Airport last week “was the most dangerous situation you could have,” according to an air traffic controller on duty that day, as the fallout from the outage stretches into a second week.

 

The drop in communications at the Philadelphia air traffic control facility on April 28 has resulted in more than a thousand canceled flights and brought renewed scrutiny on the airport’s outdated air traffic control system as multiple controllers take trauma leave amid a national shortage of workers in the crucial role.

 

Flights arriving to Newark – one of the United States’ busiest airports – were experiencing an average delay of four hours as of Tuesday evening, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, which has indicated it expects the disruption to continue.

 

The air traffic controller, who spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity, said he arrived back from a break to find his coworkers recovering from a 60- to 90-second-long outage during which they could not see planes on radar scopes or communicate with pilots.

 

“I don’t want to say panic because panic isn’t the right word, but it was hectic,” the controller said. “We were trying to figure out what’s working, what’s not.”

 

The outage impacted information from radars located at an FAA facility in Westbury, New York, where the air traffic controllers formerly managed flights heading to Newark. Control over the airspace was transferred to Philadelphia last July. The radars are now operated using a remote line that one source described as “a long extension cord.”

 

The air traffic controller attributed the failure to a single data feed that connects the old facility to the new facility.

 

“It basically doesn’t have redundancy,” he said. “We’re under the impression that there’s a single stream that’s coming in that carries both (radar and radio communication).”

 

The feed had gone down at least twice before, according to the controller.

 

An incident in November

 

In one previous incident, controllers were unable to communicate with the crew of a FedEx MD-11, which overshot the final approach path into Newark and entered the busy airspace over LaGuardia Airport, according to the air traffic controller.

 

On November 6, approach controllers couldn’t talk to planes for about five minutes, according to the audio recorded by the website LiveATC.net and first reported in November by the site VASAviation.

 

Air traffic control audio from the communication outage illustrates the confusion in the sky.

 

“We have no answer on approach,” the pilot of United Flight 1560 flying from Costa Rica radioed controllers working in the Newark tower. “It seems like he’s like not talking to anyone.”

 

“Yeah, they said they lost their frequencies,” the tower controller replies.

 

The FedEx plane trying to land at Newark enters the airspace of neighboring LaGuardia airport and calls approach controllers there.

 

“We’re on a 150 heading, FedEx 743 heavy. What do you want us to do now?” the pilot of the 767 flying from Memphis asks.

 

Controllers order the plane to turn north and climb.

 

“It was just by the grace of God that there wasn’t another plane in his way,” the controller told CNN.

The FAA’s ‘immediate steps’

 

The FAA announced Wednesday it will increase air traffic controller staffing and replace the telecommunications line involved in the loss of communication.

 

The FAA will add “three new, high-bandwidth telecommunications connections” between New York and Philadelphia, the agency said in a statement.

 

An older-style copper cable was involved in the communication failures which led to the snarled traffic.

 

The new cables will have “updated fiberoptic technology that also have greater bandwidth and speed,” according to the statement. A “temporary backup system” also will be deployed to “provide redundancy during the switch to a more reliable fiberoptic network.”

About 15 to 20 flights were being controlled by Newark Liberty approach controllers when communication and radar went down on April 28, according to an analysis by flight tracking site Flightradar24.

 

The number is based on the altitude of aircraft bound for and departing Newark and audio from the approach radio frequency, Ian Petchenik, the director of communications for the site, told CNN.

 

The system used to manage air traffic at Newark is “incredibly old,” according to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “We use floppy disks. We use copper wires,” he said on Friday. “The system that we’re using is not effective to control the traffic that we have in the airspace today.”

 

On Monday, Duffy told Fox News that controllers lost primary communication, and the backup line did not immediately take over.

 

A source told CNN the situation was like driving with a blindfold on.

 

“Imagine driving down the highway in traffic and someone puts blindfold over your eyes and tells you to keep driving and when you come back from driving dark you have to figure out what to do next,” the source said.

 

Colin Scoggins, a former air traffic controller and retired military specialist at the FAA, told CNN that losing both radar and communications on the job can be a scary experience.

 

“If you cannot talk to a pilot, then you’re really in trouble,” he said. “I would find it very traumatic.”

 

Air traffic control conversations recorded by LiveATC.net highlighted the tense moments between a controller and a pilot trying to land.

 

“You’re sitting there watching the situation unfold, kind of like on 9/11, you see situations unfold that you have no control over. And when you’re a controller, you want to be in control. When you take that away, it can be very traumatic,” Scoggins said.

 

Five FAA employees – a supervisor, three controllers and one trainee – took 45 days of trauma leave after the outage, according to the air traffic controller.

 

“This stuff takes a toll on you, especially when we keep saying this is going to happen again, it’s going to happen again, and it seems to fall on deaf ears,” he said.

 

Aviation analyst Miles O’Brien told CNN that the controllers did what they could in a potentially dangerous situation.

 

“I think, as I always say, that the controllers, the individuals who run this system daily, perform quiet heroic acts, in spite of a system that is built to set them up for failure. I believe in those people doing their job, but there’s only so much stress they can take,” he said.

A Georgia college student faces deportation after she ran a red light, and authorities discovered her entire family has been illegally living in the US for nearly 15 years.

 

Mexican-national Ximena Arias-Cristobal, 19, was pulled over by police in Dalton, Ga. on May 5 when she failed to adhere to a “no turn on red” sign.

 

Ximena Arias-Cristobal, a Dalton State Community College student, was driving without a driver’s license but told officers she had an international driver’s license, according to WTVC, citing the arrest report.

She admitted that she didn’t have the foreign document when Dalton police officers asked her to show it, claiming that her mother had taken it away from her and said she was not supposed to be driving.

 

In 2010, Arias-Cristobal was brought into the US illegally by her parents when she was only 4 years old during the family’s move from Mexico City to the Dalton area — over 30 miles from the Tennessee and Georgia border

 

Because of her non-citizen status, Arias-Cristobal was paying out-of-state tuition for school despite living in the area.

 

The officer who pulled her over attempted to speak to the teen’s mom and the owner of the car, but neither of them spoke English, according to the report.

 

Arias-Cristobal was arrested and charged with driving without a valid license and failure to obey traffic control devices.

 

She was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, a partner of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s 287(G) program, used to identify illegal aliens in the country.

 

“This program operates based on a series of reviews and background checks completed only after an inmate is already arrested for an Offense under Georgia Law,” the jail’s operation guide said.

 

Arias-Cristobal was processed through the federal database, which confirmed she wasn’t a US citizen.

 

She was brought to ICE’s Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Ga., where her father, Jose Francisco Arias-Tovar, is also being held.

 

Arias-Tovar was arrested last month when he was pulled over for driving 19 miles over the speed limit, the outlet reported.

 

The father, who owns his own company, was denied proper paperwork to remain in the US. It was not known if he ever applied for citizenship.

 

“My dad has his own company, and they called a lawyer to see if they could get a job permit or a visa, and they said that they hadn’t hit that status to get one yet,” Arias-Cristobal’s younger sister told WTVC.

 

Arias-Cristobal was not eligible for the DACA program, having been brought into the country a year after the program ended, according to Hannah Jones, the woman the teen babysat for in the past.

 

Jones created a GoFundMe to raise money for an immigration attorney and bond for the teen.

 

Chatanooga, Tennessee-based immigration attorney Terry Olsen called out the family’s detention.

 

“We do see that ICE is really trying to find any and all methods to say that an international has some way violated the process and their status. What’s concerning is that when they are being checked at these checkpoints or at the stops, ICE does not have their entire immigration file in front of them, they’re not looking at all of it, and they’re just relying on one item. This is a civil rights issue,” Olsen told the outlet.

 

Olsen said Arias-Cristobal’s mother will be arrested and deported within a month and her daughters will be taken with her to keep the family together.

Assistant Chief of Police Katie Blackwell filed a defamation lawsuit against Alpha News, reporter Liz Collin, Dr. JC Chaix, and others in October 2024, which was recently dismissed.

 

Blackwell has now agreed to pay $75,000 to cover the attorneys’ fees incurred by the defendants, including Alpha News, who were represented by the law firm Madel PA.

 

In response to dismissal and the agreement, defense attorney Chris Madel said, “Katie Blackwell claimed all she wanted was justice. However, we got justice. She got an invoice.”

 

Madel explained that the attorneys’ fees were considerably higher. Under Minnesota’s Uniform Public Expression Protection Act, otherwise known as UPEPA, the defendants—including Alpha News—could have sought the entirety of their attorneys’ fees since Blackwell’s claims were dismissed.

 

However, out of respect for Blackwell’s service in law enforcement and the National Guard, the attorneys with Madel PA and the defendants were willing to accept the lesser amount that Blackwell agreed to pay.

 

In filing her defamation lawsuit,Blackwell claimed that she was “a respected member of the Minneapolis Police Department who was maliciously defamed with respect to her performance of the duties of her employment and profession … .”

 

Blackwell also claimed that the defendants—Alpha News, Collin, and Dr. Chaix—are “extremists who are more interested in shaping a narrativeand provoking outrage than in communicating any version of truth” in producing Collin’s book “They’re Lying” and the documentary “The Fall of Minneapolis.”

 

The book and the documentary focus on the arrest and death of George Floyd and include excerpts of Blackwell’s testimony during the state trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of murder in Floyd’s death.

 

Reactions to Blackwell’s settlement

 

After hearing about the agreement, Dr. Chaix, a defendant and the writer and director of “The Fall of Minneapolis,” said, “Blackwell and her lawyers made more than a few outrageous claims, but labelling Liz and I as ‘extremists’ was completely unnecessary—and completely unprofessional. If her case had any merit, there’d be no need for name calling. But that’s just the state of leadership and lawfare these days, I suppose.”

 

As the proceedings unfolded, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara praised Blackwell and her courage and leadership on more than a few occasions.Chief O’Hara even offered literary and film criticism about Collin’s book and documentary and her attempts to “rewrite” history.

 

After hearing that Blackwell agreed to the settlement, Collin remarked, “There’s a reason why my book is titled ‘They’re Lying‘ and I hope the judge’s order to dismiss Blackwell’s lawsuit—and her agreement to this settlement—will add some credence to what I’ve been saying, and what I’ve been trying to help others realize all along.”

Blackwell’s signed declaration affirming the truth

 

In a move that finally brings truth to the matter, Blackwell also signed a written declaration, stating:

 

“I, Katie Blackwell, acknowledge, agree, and affirm that everything in the Honorable Edward T. Wahl’s Order Regarding Special Motion for Expedited Relief Under Minn. Stat. § 554.09 and for Fees and Costs Under Minn. Stat. § 554.16 dated April 8, 2025 is accurate, true, and correct.”

 

So, despite her initial claims, Blackwell has now affirmed that all of Judge Wahl’s findings are “accurate, true, and correct.”

 

As defense attorney Madel previously pointed out,many of the findings “question the truthfulness” and “veracity” of her testimony during the trial of Derek Chauvin, including the following:

 

The documentary’s “core message—that [Blackwell’s] statements conflicted with MPD’s policy manual—is substantially true.” (Order at page 52; emphasis added.)

“ … MPD policy and training materials were at odds with key aspects of their testimony.” (Order at page 33.)

“Because the documentaryevidence contradicts the unequivocal nature of her statements, the implication that [Blackwell’s] testimony was inconsistent with MPD’s policy and training is supportable and not defamatory.” (Order at page 33; emphasis added.)

“Furthermore, MPD’s own Policy Manual (§ 5-311), in effect at the time, defined a neck restraint as including compression ‘with an arm or leg.’This conflicts with Blackwell’s suggestion that MPD neck restraints were trained using only arms.” (Order at page 32.)

The ruling states the impression left by Blackwell that “the depicted technique [a knee-on-neck restraint] was never trained by MPD” is “undermined by evidence in the record,” such as “MPD training materials from 2018-2019—the period of Blackwell’s tenure—[which] included images of officers applying knees to the neck or upper back” and “34 officers swore they were trained or saw knee-to-neck training.” (Order at page 32.)

“The assertion that ‘it doesn’t seem like’ these witnesses were telling the truth generally aligns with the record’s substance. MPD’s neck restraint policy included use of the leg … Training slides showed applications using the leg … Officers testified that such techniques were permitted and were regularly taught and demonstrated … .” (Order at page 33.)

“MPD policies authorized neck restraints using a leg … Training slides depicted the application of a knee to the upper back and neck area … Officers understood such techniques to be policy-consistent and part of their training … Under these facts, it is possible to interpret Blackwell’s testimony as incomplete or misleading by omission. Therefore, the challenged statement is substantially true … .” (Order at page 34.)

“Accordingly, each of the three statements challenged by Blackwell are not actionable because (1) they accurately reflect the gist of the available record; (2) they are supported by MPD policies, training materials, and sworn officer declarations … .” (Order at page 35.)

“Yet MPD’s own policy manual and other officers indicate that similar techniques were part of MPD’s training materials and policies. Even if Blackwell attempted to distinguish MRT …the overall record supports the film’s implication that her testimony was at odds with MPD’s institutional policy manual and the training some MPD officers claim they received.” (Order at page 50.)

“In her testimony, Blackwell stated unequivocally that [it] was ‘not something we train.’ She did not acknowledge that MPD’s written policy permitted such a technique or that its training materials had historically included it. Whether or not this omission was intentional, the sting of Statement 5—that she and others misled the public—is not materially false.” (Order at page 50.)

“Blackwell stated that [the] restraint was ‘not something we train.’ But training slides do depict similar techniques, and multiple officersswore they were trained in knee-on-neck control.” (Order at page 54.)

Blackwell’s affirmation about the truth in Judge Wahl’s findings may also help settle some of the strife and contention amongcurrent and former Minneapolis police officers, especially regarding the 14 officers who provided sworn declarations stating that Blackwell committed perjury during Chauvin’s state trial.

 

According to the settlement agreement, Blackwell also agreed to “not file, or otherwise pursue, any further Judicial Proceeding relating to the Book or Documentary.” The agreement grants Blackwell 120 days to pay the $75,000 in attorneys’ fees.

Today, our Nation proudly commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Allied Powers’ triumph over national socialism and fascism, and the end of World War II in Europe — one of the most epic victories for forces of freedom in the history of the world. On this Victory Day for World War II, we celebrate the unmatched might, strength, and power of the American Armed Forces, and we commit to protecting our sacred birthright of liberty against all threats, foreign and domestic.

 

In the wake of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States righteously entered the fray of what would become the apex of the eternal battle between good and evil. After nearly 4 years of the darkest and bloodiest chapters ever recorded in human history, more than 250,000 Americans lost their lives in the fight against the Nazi regime. Today and every day, we pay tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their Nation, their liberty, and the survival of Western civilization. Without the sacrifice of our American soldiers, this war would not have been won, and our world today would look drastically different.

 

May 8, 1945 marks the Allies’ acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender — the beginning of the end of years of long, gruesome, and brutal warfare. The millions of souls senselessly lost serve as a reminder of why we must pursue peace through strength. I remain steadfastly devoted to stopping the years of endless foreign wars and preventing the further loss of lives. As I stated during my Inaugural Address, we will measure our success not only by the battles we win but also by the wars we end — and my proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker.

M1: The Incredible Expanding Crab

 

Cataloged as M1, the Crab Nebula is the first on Charles Messier's famous list of things which are not comets. In fact, the Crab Nebula is now known to be a supernova remnant, an expanding cloud of debris from the death explosion of a massive star. The violent birth of the Crab was witnessed by astronomers in the year 1054. Roughly 10 light-years across, the nebula is still expanding at a rate of about 1,500 kilometers per second. You can see the expansion by comparing these sharp images from the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope. The Crab's dynamic, fragmented filaments were captured in visible light by Hubble in 2005 and Webb in infrared light in 2023. This cosmic crustacean lies about 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Taurus.

Dave Gallagher Named 11th Director of JPL as Laurie Leshin Steps Down

The change in leadership will take place at the start of June.

Laurie Leshin has decided to step down as director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on Sunday, June 1.

David Gallagher, who has been serving as the Lab’s associate director for Strategic Integration, has been selected by Caltech to lead the federally funded research and development center. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

 

A distinguished geochemist, Leshin was named by Caltech to lead the lab in early 2022. Her career has spanned academia and senior positions at NASA.

Several NASA missions managed by JPL have launched under her leadership, including EMIT, SWOT, Psyche, PREFIRE, Europa Clipper, and SPHEREx, with the NASA-Indian Earth satellite NISAR set for a June launch.

In addition, JPL has advanced the development of NASA’s asteroid-hunting NEO Surveyor mission as well as the trio of CADRE lunar rovers, and it delivered the Coronagraph Instrument, a technology demonstration with NASA’s forthcoming Roman Space Telescope.

 

“I am proud of the many things JPL has accomplished over the past three years,” said Leshin.

“In addition to the long list of missions that have launched or moved toward launch during that time, we saved Voyager more than once and flew into history on Mars with Ingenuity.

We have made more amazing scientific discoveries than I can name, including finding potential ancient Martian biomarkers with Perseverance.

And we’ve driven the forefront of technology on Earth and in space. I know those achievements will continue under Dave’s capable leadership.”

 

Leshin, who has also served as Caltech vice president, is stepping down for personal reasons and will remain a Bren Professor of Geochemistry and Planetary Science at Caltech.

“While we respect Laurie’s decision to step away from her leadership position at JPL, we will miss her drive, compassion, and dedication,” Caltech President Thomas Rosenbaum said.

“At the same time, we are grateful to Dave Gallagher for his devotion to JPL and his continuing leadership and partnership going forward.

Dave’s experience working across multiple government and private sector entities will help secure ongoing support for America’s agenda in space, with JPL continuing to play an essential role.”

 

Gallagher will draw on his deep experience at JPL to lead the lab into the future. He arrived at JPL 36 years ago, in 1989, and went on to hold numerous leadership positions.

Along with having served as the director and deputy director for Astronomy, Physics, and Space Technology, he was manager of JPL’s Advanced Optical Systems Program Office.

An electrical engineer, Gallagher also managed the Spitzer Space Telescope and, among other roles, led the team that built and tested the Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 (WF/PC-2) — a critical instrument that corrected the spherical aberration on NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

 

“Laurie has made a significant impact on energizing and focusing the lab, guiding it back on track after the Covid-19 pandemic.

I wish her great success in this next chapter of her career, and I look forward to a very smooth transition at the lab,” said Gallagher.

“We have exciting opportunities ahead helping to advance our nation’s space agenda and a fantastic team to help realize them.”

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and CBS host Stephen Colbert claimed on Tuesday’s broadcast of The Late Show that the Republican Party wants to put an end to elections.

 

The duo both stated that the GOP wants to end elections, though they did not offer much by way of evidence.

 

“So, one of the things that’s interesting to me is that there’s such gross and obvious incompetence and disregard for our institutions, touching third rails like Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid, this is not the behavior of people — because Republicans haven’t stood up en masse resist what Donald Trump has done,” Colbert railed.

 

Colbert added that “A few people here or there,” have objected.

 

He went on, saying, “This is not the behavior of people who seem like they believe they have to answer to voters in 18 months. That worries me. Not that they are not worried, but that they don’t think that they should be worried because maybe they don’t have to worry about an election at all.”

 

After Colbert’s unsupported fearmongering, Maddow took up the theme and went even farther with the wild claim.

 

Maddow claimed that Trump “doesn’t think there should be elections.”

 

She then insisted, “they are consolidating power, they’re disempowering Congress, ignoring Congress, defunding agencies or closing agencies. That’s Congress’s job, that’s not the president’s job. When they are defying court orders, that’s them saying the courts don’t have authority over the president, that’s consolidating all the power in one man, that’s authoritarianism, and that’s what you do when you don’t ever want to have an election because you want to stay in power for life, and that is what they are trying.”

 

Trump, of course, has already said that this term is his last and that he is not looking for a third term. He also insisted that there is “plenty of time” in this term to get the things done that he has planned to do. Those are not the words of a man who wants to end elections and become a permanent ruler.

 

But history shows thatDemocrat presidents, going all the way back to Franklin Roosevelt, have used the presidency to skirt Congress and rule the nation from the Oval Office. Obama did it, and Biden did it. Barack Obama laid out 305 executive orders in eight years and Biden hit 167 in his four years.

He retired as a colonel Oct. 1, 2021. Anderson is currently a vice president and Space Force & Air Force client executive at CACI. He also serves as the chief growth officer at the Space Force Association.

 

An alum of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Anderson holds degrees in biology, aeronautical science, and leadership & counseling.

New Visualization From NASA's Webb Telescope Explores Cosmic Cliffs

In July 2022, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope made its public debut with a series of breathtaking images. Among them was an ethereal landscape nicknamed the Cosmic Cliffs.

This glittering realm of star birth is the subject of a new 3D visualization derived from the Webb data.

The visualization, created by NASA’s Universe of Learning and titled “Exploring the Cosmic Cliffs in 3D,” breathes new life into an iconic Webb image.

 

It is being presented today at a special event hosted by the International Planetarium Society to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first public planetarium in Munich, Germany.

The landscape of “mountains” and “valleys” known as the Cosmic Cliffs is actually a portion of the nebula Gum 31, which contains a young star cluster called NGC 3324.

Both Gum 31 and NGC 3324 are part of a vast star-forming region known as the Carina Nebula Complex.

 

Ultraviolet light and stellar winds from the stars of NGC 3324 have carved a cavernous area within Gum 31. A portion of this giant bubble is seen above the Cosmic Cliffs. (The star cluster itself is outside this field of view.)

The Cliffs display a misty appearance, with “steam” that seems to rise from the celestial mountains. In actuality, the wisps are hot, ionized gas and dust streaming away from the nebula under an onslaught of relentless ultraviolet radiation.

 

Eagle-eyed viewers may also spot particularly bright, yellow streaks and arcs that represent outflows from young, still-forming stars embedded within the Cosmic Cliffs.

The latter part of the visualization sequence swoops past a prominent protostellar jet in the upper right of the image.

 

Produced for NASA by the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) with partners at Caltech/IPAC, and developed by the AstroViz Project of NASA’s Universe of Learning, this visualization is part of a longer, narrated video that provides broad audiences, including youth, families, and lifelong learners, with a direct connection to the science and scientists of NASA’s Astrophysics missions.

That video enables viewers to explore fundamental questions in science, experience how science is done, and discover the universe for themselves.

 

“Bringing this amazing Webb image to life helps the public to comprehend the three-dimensional structure inherent in the 2D image, and to develop a better mental model of the universe,” said STScI’s Frank Summers, principal visualization scientist and leader of the AstroViz Project.

More visualizations and connections between the science of nebulas and learners can be explored through other products produced by NASA’s Universe of Learning including a Carina Nebula Complex resource page and ViewSpace, a video exhibit that is currently running at almost 200 museums and planetariums across the United States.

Visitors can go beyond video to explore the images produced by space telescopes with interactive tools now available for museums and planetariums.

NASA’s Hubble Pinpoints Roaming Massive Black Hole

Like a scene out of a sci-fi movie, astronomers using NASA telescopes have found “Space Jaws.”

Lurking 600 million light-years away, within the inky black depths between stars, there is an invisible monster gulping down any wayward star that plummets toward it.

The sneaky black hole betrayed its presence in a newly identified tidal disruption event (TDE) where a hapless star was ripped apart and swallowed in a spectacular burst of radiation.

These disruption events are powerful probes of black hole physics, revealing the conditions necessary for launching jets and winds when a black hole is in the midst of consuming a star, and are seen as bright objects by telescopes.

 

The new TDE, called AT2024tvd, allowed astronomers to pinpoint a wandering supermassive black hole using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, with similar supporting observations from NASA’s Chandra X-Ray Observatory and the NRAO Very Large Array telescope that also showed that the black hole is offset from the center of the galaxy.

The paper will be published in an upcoming issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

 

Surprisingly, this one million-solar-mass black hole doesn’t reside exactly in the center of the host galaxy, where supermassive black holes are typically found, and actively gobble up surrounding material.

Out of approximately 100 TDE events recorded by optical sky surveys so far, this is the first time an offset TDE has been identified. The rest are associated with the central black holes of galaxies.

 

In fact, at the center of the host galaxy there is a different supermassive black hole weighing 100 million times the mass of the Sun.

Hubble’s optical precision shows the TDE was only 2,600 light-years from the more massive black hole at the galaxy’s center. That’s just one-tenth the distance between our Sun and the Milky Way’s central supermassive black hole.

 

This bigger black hole spews out energy as it accretes infalling gas, and it is categorized as an active galactic nucleus.

Strangely, the two supermassive black holes co-exist in the same galaxy, but are not gravitationally bound to each other as a binary pair.

The smaller black hole may eventually spiral into the galaxy’s center to merge with the bigger black hole. But for now, it is too far separated to be gravitationally bound.

 

A TDE happens when an infalling star is stretched or “spaghettified” by a black hole’s immense gravitational tidal forces. The shredded stellar remnants are pulled into a circular orbit around the black hole.

This generates shocks and outflows with high temperatures that can be seen in ultraviolet and visible light.

 

“AT2024tvd is the first offset TDE captured by optical sky surveys, and it opens up the entire possibility of uncovering this elusive population of wandering black holes with future sky surveys,” said lead study author Yuhan Yao of the University of California at Berkeley. “Right now, theorists haven't given much attention to offset TDEs.

“I think this discovery will motivate scientists to look for more examples of this type of event.”

A Flash in the Night

The star-snacking black hole gave itself away when several ground-based sky survey telescopes observed a flare as bright as a supernova.

But unlike a supernova, astronomers know that this came from a black hole snacking on a star because the flare was very hot, and showed broad emission lines of hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen, and silicon.

The Zwicky Transient Facility at Caltech’s Palomar Observatory, with its 1.2-meter telescope that surveys the entire northern sky every two days, first observed the event.

 

“Tidal disruption events hold great promise for illuminating the presence of massive black holes that we would otherwise not be able to detect,” said Ryan Chornock, associate adjunct professor at UC Berkeley and a member of the ZTF team.

“Theorists have predicted that a population of massive black holes located away from the centers of galaxies must exist, but now we can use TDEs to find them.”

 

The flare was seemingly offset from the center of a bright massive galaxy as cataloged by Pan-STARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System), the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the DESI Legacy Imaging Survey.

To better determine that it was not at the galactic center, Yao’s team used NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory to confirm that X-rays from the flare site were also offset.

It took the resolving power of Hubble to settle any uncertainties. Hubble’s sensitivity to ultraviolet light also allows it to pinpoint the location of the TDE, which is much bluer than the rest of the galaxy.

 

Origin Unknown

The black hole responsible for the TDE is prowling inside the bulge of the massive galaxy.

The black hole only becomes apparent every few tens of thousands of years when it “burps” from capturing a star, and then it goes quiet again until its next meal comes along.

 

How did the black hole get off-center? Previous theoretical studies have shown that black holes can be ejected out of the centers of galaxies because of three-body interactions, where the lowest-mass member gets kicked out.

This may be the case here, given the stealthy black hole’s close proximity to the central black hole.

“If the black hole went through a triple interaction with two other black holes in the galaxy’s core, it can still remain bound to the galaxy, orbiting around the central region,“ said Yao.

 

An alternative explanation is that the black hole is the surviving remnant of a smaller galaxy that merged with the host galaxy more than 1 billion years ago.

If that is the case, the black hole might eventually spiral in to merge with the central active black hole sometime in the very far future. So at present, astronomers don’t know if it’s coming or going.

 

Erica Hammerstein, another UC Berkeley postdoctoral researcher, scrutinized the Hubble images as part of the study, but did not find any evidence of a past galaxy merger.

But she explained, “There is already good evidence that galaxy mergers enhance TDE rates, but the presence of a second black hole in AT2024tvd’s host galaxy means that at some point in this galaxy’s past, a merger must have happened.”

NASA Mars satellite uncovers markings 'like paint dripping down a wall' on Martian surface

High-resolution satellite images have revealed dripping paint-like patterns on Mars that match those found on Earth, according to a new study.

The familiar soil patterns suggest that Mars and Earth were shaped by similar forces. On Earth, the patterns form on the slopes of cold, mountainous regions where soils freeze and thaw throughout the year.

If Mars once had the same icy, wet conditions, then these patterns could be a good place to explore the role that liquid water may have had in shaping the Red Planet and its potential to harbor signs of life.

 

"Understanding how these patterns form offers valuable insight into Mars' climate history, especially the potential for past freezing and thawing cycles, though more work is needed to tell if these features formed recently or long ago," study lead author JohnPaul Sleiman, a doctoral student in the department of Earth and environmental sciences at the University of Rochester in New York, said in a statement.

"Ultimately, this research could help us identify signs of past or present environments on other planets that may support or limit potential life," Sleiman added.

 

On Earth, soil patterns like this are known as solifluction lobes. They form when a sheet of frozen ground partially thaws and loosens, causing soil to creep downhill.

The effect creates wave-like patterns on the side of hills in cold regions. Mars is further away from the sun than Earth, and typically much colder, but the Martian lobes only occur at high latitudes.

 

Some previous studies have suggested that Mars' high-latitude regions may have experienced freeze-thaw conditions in the planet's recent climate history, which would explain why it has similar lobes.

However, there are many unanswered questions surrounding the Martian lobes, including why they appear to be significantly larger than those on Earth, according to the study.

 

By analyzing high-resolution satellite imagery of the Martian surface taken by the HiRISE camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the research team saw that the wave-like landforms followed the same basic geometric pattern as those in Earth's Rocky Mountains, Arctic and other cold mountainous regions, according to the statement.

 

Study co-author Rachel Glade, an assistant professor in the department of Earth and environmental sciences at the University of Rochester, likened the landforms to patterns seen in fluids.

These patterns "are large, slow-moving, granular examples of common patterns found in everyday fluids, like paint dripping down a wall," Glade said in the statement.

 

The team also confirmed that the Martian lobes were larger than Earth's — around 2.6 times taller on average.

To explain this, they proposed that Mars has taller lobes because its gravity is weaker, which allows waves of accumulating sediment to grow taller before collapsing, according to the study.

 

The findings reinforce previous suspicions that Mars' lobes are — or were — linked to ground ice, with their patterns resembling what would be expected from fluid-like instabilities.

However, the researchers couldn't be certain that liquid water was involved just from the satellite data.

The authors suggested that future laboratory experiments could explore whether ice and liquid water are both required for the wave-like patterns to form.

Following the example of international organizations, a handful of visionary scientists imagined creating a European atomic physics laboratory. The global space exploration conference underway in New Delhi has delegates from 35 countries across the world, except one.

The American space agency, Nasa, has not sent delegates to the global space meet being hosted by India where thirty-five countries, space agency officials from China, Japan, Canada and Europe, 1,700 delegates and ten astronauts representing various countries are huddled in New Delhi.

 

When asked about Nasa's absences, officials noted that it was likely to a transition at the American space agency with US President Donald Trump rolling out a new Nasa budget and slashing manpower.

Donald Trump's newly proposed budget for Nasa, unveiled as part of the White House's 2026 "skinny budget," marks the largest single-year cut to the agency in American history, slashing top-line funding by 24%-from $24.8 billion to $18.8 billion.

 

The move has alarmed space experts and advocates, who warn that the cuts will have severe repercussions for US space exploration and could hand China a decisive advantage in the modern race to the Moon.

The GLEX-2025 is organised by the International Astronautical Federation and the Indian Space Research Organisation.

 

Inaugurating the global conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said for India, space was about exploration as well as empowerment, and listed out plans to set up the Bharatiya Anatariksh Station by 2035 and land an Indian astronaut on the Moon by 2040.

"India's space journey is not about racing others. It is about reaching higher together. Together, we share a common goal to explore space for the good of humanity," he said in the video message that was recorded on Tuesday.

 

An Indian astronaut will travel to space as part of a joint Isro-Nasa Mission to the International Space Station.

The Axiom-4 mission is stated for launch on May 29 and Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and three others will undertake a 14-day sojourn to the orbital laboratory.

NASA Stennis Releases First Open-Source Software

NASA’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, has released its first-ever open-source software, a peer review tool to facilitate more efficient and collaborative creation of systems applications, such as those used in its frontline government and commercial propulsion test work.

 

“Everyone knows NASA Stennis as the nation’s premier rocket propulsion test site,” said David Carver, acting chief of the Office of Test Data and Information Management.

“We also are engaged in a range of key technology efforts. This latest open-source tool is an exciting example of that work, and one we anticipate will have a positive and widespread impact.”

 

The new NASA Data Acquisition System Peer Review Tool was developed over several years, built on lessons learned as site developers and engineers created software tools for use across the center’s sprawling test complex.

It is designed to simplify and amplify the collaborative review process, allowing developers to build better and more effective software applications.

 

The new NASA Stennis Peer Review tool was developed using the same software processes that built NDAS.

As center engineers and developers created software to monitor and analyze data from rocket propulsion tests, they collaborated with peers to optimize system efficiency.

What began as an internal review process ultimately evolved into the open-source code now available to the public.

 

“We refined it (the peer review tool) over a period of time, and it has improved our process significantly,” said Brandon Carver (no relation), a NASA Stennis software engineer.

“In early efforts, we were doing reviews manually, now our tool handles some of these steps for us. It has allowed us to focus more on reviewing key items in our software.”

Developers can improve time, efficiency, and address issues earlier when conducting software code reviews. The result is a better, more productive product.

 

The NASA Stennis tool is part of the larger NASA Data Acquisition System created at the center to help monitor and collect propulsion test data.

It is designed to work with National Instruments LabVIEW, which is widely used by systems engineers and scientists to design applications.

LabVIEW is unique in using graphics (visible icon objects) instead of a text-based programming language to create applications. The graphical approach makes it more challenging to compare codes in a review process.

 

“You cannot compare your code in the same way you do with a text-based language,” Brandon Carver said.

“Our tool offers a process that allows developers to review these LabVIEW-developed programs and to focus more time on reviewing actual code updates.”

 

LabVIEW features a comparison tool, but NASA Stennis engineers identified ways they could improve the process, including by automating certain steps.

The NASA Stennis tool makes it easier to post comments, pictures, and other elements in an online peer review to make discussions more effective.

 

The result is what NASA Stennis developers hope is a more streamlined, efficient process. “It really optimizes your time and provides everything you need to focus on right in front of you,” Brandon Carver said.

“That’s why we wanted to open source this because when we were building the tool, we did not see anything like it, or we did not see anything that had features that we have.”

 

“By providing it to the open-source community, they can take our tool, find better ways of handling things, and refine it,” Brandon Carver said.

“We want to allow those groups to modify it and become a community around the tool, so it is continuously improved.

Ultimately, a peer review is to make stronger software or a stronger product and that is also true for this peer review tool.

 

“It is a good feeling to be part of the process and to see something created at the center now out in the larger world across the agency,” Brandon Carver said.

“It is pretty exciting to be able to say that you can go get this software we have written and used,” he acknowledged. “NASA engineers have done this. I hope we continue to do it.”

Scientists have come up with a new high-resolution map of the ocean floor. The newly released findings show nearly 100,000 underwater mountains that were previously unknown.

David Sandwell from Scripps Institution of Oceanography contributed to this research and credits advanced satellite observations for the detailed results.

The SWOT mission, launched in December 2022, is central to collecting the critical data that enabled this mapping effort.

 

How satellites outpace ships

Mapping the ocean floor with ships takes time, fuel, and money. Even with sonar, a single vessel might only cover a narrow strip of seafloor each day.

Satellites like SWOT cover about 90% of the Earth every 21 days. They don’t match the detail of sonar, but they make up for it with speed, scale, and frequency of observation.

 

Why seafloor maps matter

Ships equipped with sonar instruments can survey the ocean bottom directly, but only about one-quarter of the seafloor has been charted in this way. That knowledge gap spurred scientists to turn to satellite-based data for a bigger picture.

“Seafloor mapping is key in both established and emerging economic opportunities, including rare-mineral seabed mining, optimizing shipping routes, hazard detection, and seabed warfare operations,” said Nadya Vinogradova Shiffer at the end of a NASA statement.

Accurate mapping has practical uses for navigation and cable-laying, and it also shapes our understanding of ocean processes.

 

Hidden ocean mountains

Seamounts are underwater mountains that rise from the ocean floor but do not break the surface. These features were once hard to detect if they measured less than about 3,300 feet in height.

The new satellite map can sense seamounts less than half that tall. By zeroing in on tiny gravitational “bumps” on the water’s surface, the data predict the position of these newly discovered peaks, boosting known seamount counts from 44,000 to nearly 100,000.

 

The technique behind the map depends on gravity – not cameras. Since seamounts and abyssal hills have more mass than the surrounding seafloor, they tug slightly more on the ocean above them.

That tug creates tiny rises in the water’s surface, sometimes only a few centimeters high. The SWOT satellite detects those subtle changes and translates them into detailed maps that outline what’s below.

 

Influence of abyssal hills

“Abyssal hills are the most abundant landform on Earth, covering about 70% of the ocean floor,” said Yao Yu at the end of a recent study. Scientists also looked at abyssal hills, which are smaller mounds covering much of the deep sea.

These rolling ridges can be just a few miles wide, making them difficult to observe from previous satellites. Any shifts in tectonic plates over time leave patterns on these hills, creating a geological record that is now clearer than ever.

Mapping isn’t the main purpose of the SWOT satellite, but its radar altimeter collects precise measurements of water heights.

That information can be converted into a topographic map of the sea surface, which mirrors the contours of the bottom.

This helps researchers chart terrain in places where ship-based sonar data remain sparse. It also complements efforts by the Seabed 2030 project to fully survey the global seafloor by the end of this decade.

 

Unexpected military and climate benefits

Improved seafloor maps don’t just help scientists and sailors. Defense agencies use them to detect submarines, design sonar strategies, and assess undersea terrain for stealth operations.

The same data also play a role in climate modeling. Accurate bathymetry helps researchers trace heat flow in the ocean, a major factor in predicting long-term weather patterns and identifying areas vulnerable to sea level changes.

 

What’s next for these ocean mountains?

Scientists plan to measure the depth of each feature more precisely next. They have squeezed out nearly all possible details about seafloor shapes from the first year of SWOT data, which could revolutionize future marine research.

Even with the best technology, complete sonar-based coverage of Earth’s ocean will still take time. However, satellite missions like SWOT will speed up progress and ensure more sections of the ocean floor are understood.

Not sure what kind of crack is in the Diet Coke there but prices are not down where anon lives in Florida. A small fraction but still highly elevated from what they should be. Gas is well over $3 a gallon still, not under $2. Butter is $7 a pound. Eggs probably dropped a single dollar per dozen but are still at least triple what they should be. Energy costs that he promised would drop by 50% are still the same as far as our electric, water etc.. Retire parent anons are paying hundreds of dollars directly out of their social security to fund their Medicare requirements. Home insurance for a basic home is over $5k this year and that's not including property taxes. This is only part of it but basically everything is inflated still and we live in a good economic area of the country. Dropping something 20% after it went up 300% is nothing to brag about. Do any of these rich people really known what it's like to put butter and eggs back on the shelf so other things can be paid for? We're paying out the ass here waiting for the golden age.. which I"m not sure newly retired people can really benefit from. Retired people who had to work so hard the last 40 years due to factory closings they had no money left to save for the future and are relying on their basic social security. These Satellites Just Nailed the Most Precise Formation Flight in Space History

The European Space Agency’s Proba-3 mission has achieved something no other mission—or synchronized swimmer—has before: autonomous, precision formation flying in space with millimeter accuracy.

 

ESA’s Proba-3 satellites—the Occulter and the Coronagraph, respectively—maintained a steady 492-foot (150-meter) distance from one another in a highly elliptical orbit, simulating a single massive instrument.

The same principle is used by satellite constellations and planned space telescopes to capitalize on the laws of physics and the relatively noiseless environment of space to collect more data than otherwise possible.

But Proba-3’s goal is unique: to align the spacecraft in such a way that one (the Occulter) can block out the Sun’s glare, while the other (the Coronagraph) can take a clean look at its wispy outer atmosphere—the solar corona.

 

For this to work, the two spacecraft can’t just drift around together—they must stay aligned with millimeter-level (0.04-inch) precision, with no micromanagement from Earth.

Specifically, the instruments need to be aligned such that there’s nearly 500 feet (152.4 m) between them, and a 4.6-foot (1.4-m) disc on the Occulter casts a 2-inch (5-centimeter) shadow on the Coronagraph—that’s all the latter needs to be sheltered from the Sun’s brilliance and image its faint, ethereal corona.

 

After initial positioning by ground control, the satellite duo’s autonomous system of cameras, LEDs, and laser rangefinders brings the two spacecraft closer together, leveraging an algorithm to ensure that the Coronagraph stays safely in the Occulter’s shadow.

The Fine Lateral and Longitudinal Sensor (FLLS)—a laser system that detects position shifts—ensures the two spacecraft remain precisely aligned; constant measuring of laser light is the same technology that will keep LISA, the next-generation gravitational wave observatory from NASA and ESA, in alignment at much greater distances, 10 years from now.

 

Proba-3’s achievement marks a level of orbital choreography that’s never been accomplished before.

“We are talking about millimetric accuracy in range, and sub-millimetric in the lateral position,” said project manager Damien Galano in an ESA release.

“We can’t wait to see the completion of the instrument calibration and the first processed image of the Sun’s corona.”

 

The solar science will be a remarkable feat in itself, but Proba-3’s technology demonstration also helps prove out the precision measurements that will be crucial for future multi-spacecraft missions, such as LISA.

It’s marvelously precise science that sets the stage for astronomy’s future. For now, ESA’s Proba-3 will prepare for its research campaign—tethered by lasers in a Kubrickian waltz, getting ready to stare straight into the Sun.

ESA feeling weightless and unwanted amid proposed NASA cuts

NASA's "skinny" budget has rattled its allies. After years of close cooperation, the European Space Agency (ESA) is looking jilted, while others describe the US space scene as adrift in gloom and doubt.

ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher reacted cautiously to the proposed 24 percent annual budget cut, which has yet to make its way through US Congress.

He noted that ESA "remains open to cooperation with NASA on the programs earmarked for a reduction or termination."

 

However, Aschbacher also said the agency was assessing the potential impact with its member states.

The budget changes could hit ESA hard. The European Service Module (ESM) is used by the Orion crew capsule to provide power, life support, and propulsion on Artemis missions.

According to ESA contractor Airbus, ESM-2 and 3 are awaiting their upcoming missions, while ESM-4 through 6 are under construction in Bremen, Germany.

 

If the budget overhaul goes through as planned, and the Space Launch System is canceled, there is unlikely to be much call for ESMs past ESM-3 unless alternative uses are found for the components.

The same goes for the lunar Gateway, for which ESA was to contribute three key elements – the Lunar International Habitation Module (Lunar I-HAB), and the two-part European System Providing Refueling, Infrastructure and Telecommunications (ESPRIT) service module, comprising the Lunar Link and Lunar View subsystems.

 

ESA and NASA's relationship goes back decades, although it has not always run smoothly.

Regarding the near loss of the joint SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) probe, NASA's reaction was "forget it!" while ESA's Director of Science, Dr Roger Bonnet, was determined to "bring back" the mission.

SOHO remains operational nearly 30 years after launch.

 

Aschbacher described ESA as not only a reliable partner, "but a strong and desirable partner."

On the other hand, a space agency insider told The Register in March that NASA was being treated "as an abusive spouse who could lash out at any moment in unpredictable ways."

 

Aschbacher pointed out that the spending bill had many hurdles before being passed by the US House and Senate, which would be true in normal times.

However, these are not normal times, and "while some questions still remain about the full repercussions, follow-up meetings are already taking place with NASA."

 

Although there has been no official statement from within NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which will be hit hard if the Mars Sample Return Mission is scrapped, former Voyager scientist Garry Hunt told The Register the mood inside was one of "unhappiness."

"Many of them hold EU passports, and therefore, returning home is an option they're all investigating," he said.

Hunt was part of the brain drain from the UK and EU to the US decades ago. "I think now we're going to see the brain drain reversed."

‘I Never Said That!’ Marjorie Taylor Greene Denies ‘Jewish Space Lasers’ Conspiracy in Testy Exchange With Cenk Uygur

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) blamed a 2021 “hit piece” for kickstarting the “lie” that she explicitly said “Jewish space lasers” were behind devastating California fires in a 2018 Facebook post.

In the now-deleted post, Greene speculated on internet reports of “lasers or blue beams of light causing the fires,” as well as the possibility that the 150,000-acre Camp Fire in California – which killed 85 people – may have been caused by “space solar generators” launched by businesses funded by the Rothschild investment group to clear space for a Democratic high speed rail project in the state.

 

At the time and since, the post has been mocked and widely criticized as anti-Semitic for its inclusion of the Rothschilds trope. As the story spread it became paraphrased as the “Jewish space lasers” conspiracy theory.

Since then, Greene has been forced to deny the reports several times in exchanges with journalists, including as recently as Wednesday, when the congresswoman was quick to put down the claim she’d ever used those particular words in a testy exchange with The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur.

 

After the host raised “space lasers”, Greene replied: “I never said Jewish space lasers. That’s a lie. Yeah, it’s a lie and I really am tired of people perpetuating the lie.”

“So what do you mean you didn’t say it? I’m trying to clear it up,” Ugyur pressed.

Greene replied: “I’ve never said that. I never said that statement in my life but there was someone that wrote an article and that was the headline and that’s what they created.

It was early January of 2021 when I first came into Congress. So it was an entire hit piece against me and it was a statement I had never said in my life. Until I saw it trending on Twitter attached to my name.”

 

“So that was not your Facebook account?” the host asked.

Greene continued: “Of course that was my Facebook account but I never said ‘Jewish space lasers’ and I never blamed Jewish people or Israel for anything in my Facebook post.

And you can read my Facebook post and it’s clear and obvious.”

 

The defense is one that Greene has made before, accusing a “leftist journalist” of manufacturing the term to attack her.

While she has never named the journalist or the publication responsible, the apparent earliest article headlined with the phrase in question, as described by Greene, is one by Intelligencer columnist Jonathan Chait, who ran an article on January 28, 2021, titled “Marjorie Taylor Greene Blamed Wildfires on Secret Jewish Space Laser.”

 

Moving on in the interview, Uygur wasn’t finished and used the “space laser” line to segue to what he said was the “adjacent topic” of President Donald Trump’s proposed Golden Dome missile defense system.

“Are you worried about Elon’s space lasers these days?” he jibed, a line that Greene laughed out loud at.

FBI opens formal criminal probe into New York AG Letitia James over alleged mortgage fraud

The FBI and US Attorney’s Office in Albany have launched a criminal investigation into mortgage fraud claims against New York Attorney General Letitia James, a source familiar with the probe told The Post.

 

The investigation, first reported by the Times Union, follows a federal criminal referral sent by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte to the Justice Department earlier this month.

 

Pulte’s letter alleges James “falsified records” to obtain favorable loans on a home she purchased in 2023 in Virginia and a Brooklyn brownstone she’s owned since 2001.

 

The allegations further detail James indicated the Virginia home would be her “principal residence” while acting as New York’s top cop, and that she misrepresented the number of units in her Brooklyn residence.

 

The FBI and James’ office declined to comment when reached by The Post.

A stadium-sized asteroid will fly past Earth on May 9, and you can watch it live

On May 9, a stadium-sized potentially hazardous asteroid will pass by Earth, and you can watch the flyby happen in real time courtesy of a livestream from The Virtual Telescope Project.

The main belt asteroid 612356 2002 JX8 is estimated to have a diameter of 950 feet (290 meters) according to NASA, and will pose absolutely no threat to Earth during its 2025 flyby.

 

The Virtual Telescope Project's YouTube channel will go live at 4:30 p.m. EDT (20:30 GMT) on May 9, just a few hours before 2002 JX8 makes its closest approach to Earth at (11:02 GMT).

The stream will also show views of the asteroid Vesta, which reached opposition on May 2, and is still relatively bright in the night sky.

 

"We did follow-up observations of the Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (612356) 2002 JX8, slowly approaching our planet: on 9 May 2025, it will safely come as close as 4.2 millions of km [(2.6 million miles)] from us, 10.9 times the average lunar distance," wrote Gianluca Masi, founder of The Virtual Telescope Project in a recent blog post. "We will show it live!"

 

Masi's organization has successfully captured several images of 2002 JX8 in the run up to its May 9 flyby, in which the asteroid appears as a distinct dot of light that could be seen shifting position relative to the stars behind it.

The Virtual Telescope Project offers free online observing sessions for the public for asteroid flybys and similar events, as well as access to individual robotic telescopes.

 

Potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs) such as 2002 JX8 are categorized as such based on their brightness (magnitude +22.0 or lower/brighter) and their ability to perform a "threatening close approach to Earth," according to NASA, which is defined as coming within within 0.05 astronomical units, or 4.6 million miles (7.5 million km) of our planet.

For reference, 1 AU is the equivalent to 93 million miles (150 million km), which is the average distance separating Earth and the sun.

 

NASA scientists believe that there are around 4,700 PHAs whizzing around our solar system, based on observations from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission. However, we will likely never see one actually impact our planet's surface.

The agency estimates that an asteroid with a diameter of around 500 ft (140 m) impacts Earth just once every 20,000 years, while an asteroid with a diameter of 3,000 ft (1,000 m) collides with our planet once every 700,000 years.

 

Scientists at the Center for Near Earth Object Studies responsible for tracking the long term potential orbits of near-Earth objects have also stated that it is unlikely that a large asteroid capable of causing widespread damage will strike Earth in the next 100 years.

The US Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corp and Office of Military Commissions at Guantanamo Bay convicted former Air Force Vice Chief of Staff James C. “Jim” Slife of mutiny, insurrection, and other high crimes Tuesday afternoon. Military officers serving as jurors, or panelists, recommended he face the strictest punishment: death.

As reported, the US Army Criminal Investigation (CID) arrested Slife on February 23 based on “compelling” proof that Slife in 2013 had ordered an abortive against the Michigan Militia while commanding the 1st Special Operations Wing, one of six Air Force active-duty special operations wings that fall under the Air Force Special Operations Command. Slife had ordered an AC-130 Specter Gunship to raze a militia training area full of men, women, and children under the pretense of protecting then-president Barack Hussein Obama from “domestic terrorists.” The gunship was already airborne and less than 15 miles from the target when the crew, ostensibly realizing they were about to commit a war crime, aborted the illegal mission.

At his arraignment on March 4, Slife entered a plea of “not guilty,” and his JAG-appointed counsel argued that JAG’s charges were politically motivated and specious because no one had been killed and that Slife’s only crime was obeying his commander-in-chief. Slife’s lawyer filed a motion for dismissal and urged the magistrate to release his client, post hate.

“The phrase ‘I was just following orders has been used to justify too many war crimes. Mr. Slife will stand trial,” the magistrate said.

The tribunal commended at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday and ended only two hours later.

Wearing handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit, Slife was escorted into court by military police and seated at the defense table beside his counsel, a balding middle-aged captain whose visible perspiration suggested he lacked confidence in his defense.

In opening statements, acting Judge Advocate General Lia Reynolds described Slife as a reckless, cavalier, obsequious officer who had abandoned his constitutional oath hoping to ingratiate himself with Obama. In contrast, Slife’s attorney defined his client as a “heroic, decorated military man with a history of meritorious service to his nation.” He said Slife had faithfully obeyed his commander-in-chief as all good officers should, adding that if anyone should stand trial, it should be Obama, not Slife.

Admiral Reynolds showed the panel a typewritten Air Force planning and execution document, dated 06/01/2013, requisitioning a single AC-130 to depart Hurlburt Field, Florida, at 1500 hours on June 6, fly directly to a “domestic terrorist” training center near Gaylord, Michigan, and use all available ordnance to obliterate the compound and its occupants. Slife’s handwritten signature, authenticated by handwriting analysis experts, appeared at the bottom of the page.

“Had the plane unloaded its weapons, there were, we now know, 63 innocent people that would’ve been killed. They weren’t domestic terrorists; they were citizens of the United States practicing their 1st and 2nd Amendments. ‘A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.’ Obama perceived armed citizens as a threat to his autocracy and did everything he could to neutralize what he saw as impediments to his presidency. I don’t doubt that Obama or Hagel (Chuck Hagel was Obama’s defense secretary between February 27, 2013 – February 17, 2015) initiated the idea, but Defendant Slife allowed himself to be their instrument of destruction. All Armed Forces officers understand moral from immoral or legal from illegal orders. The Defendant, well, cared more about promotion than right from wrong,” Admiral Reynolds told the panel.

Next, Adm. Reynolds called Lieutenant Jeremy Beals, USAF, Retd., to the witness stand. Beals had been the navigator, now referred to as a Combat Systems Officer (CSO), aboard the AC-130.

As his examination and cross-examination lasted 90 minutes, we have truncated it for brevity and relevancy.

“Did the Defendant talk to you before the flight?” Admiral Reynolds asked.

“Not personally, ma’am. He entered the flight deck and spoke with Captain Adams (the pilot) and Captain Monroe (the co-pilot). They told us the mission, and before that we, meaning me and the rest of the flight crew, didn’t even know it was real-world,” Beals said.

“We understand the meaning of ‘real-world,’ but can you state it for the record, please?” asked Adm. Reynolds.

“Basically, an actual operation and not a training exercise,” Beals said.

“And what was your understanding of this operation?” asked the Admiral.

“Other than what the pilots told you, did you see a physical order authorizing the mission?” Admiral Reynolds asked.

 

Beals chortled. “It was unusual, but no. Not until 20 minutes before takeoff. Captain Monroe tol us, the crew.”

 

“Do you recall what he said ?” the Admiral asked.

 

“Ma’am, it’s been 13 years, so, no, not verbatim, but I do remember it authorized the use of weapons to decimate the target package,” Beals said.

 

“And none of that seemed irregular, questionable, illegal? Firing on a farm in northern Michigan,” said the Admiral.

 

“Ma’am, Captain Monroe made it clear this was hush-hush, said compliance was mandatory, and that all our careers would go down in flames if we didn’t,” Beals said.

 

“But you didn’t,” the Admiral noted.

 

“No, ma’am. It was really only at the last moment—Captain Adams said we weren’t doing it and turned the plane around, and he said he’d accept full responsibility. I tell you, ma’am, we all breathed a sigh of relief because we knew what we were preparing to do was out and out wrong,” Beals said.

 

“What happened after? Were you, any of you, brought up on charges for disobeying a direct order?” asked Admiral Reynolds.

 

Beals chuckled. “No, ma’am. Your Defendant sitting there—he verbally reamed us out, but that’s it. I mean, what would he do? Court Martial us for not killing American citizens? He told us not to ever talk about the mission with anyone, or he’d make life hell.”

 

“And you resigned six months later, is that correct?” asked the Admiral.

 

“Yes, ma’am. I requested a tender of resignation saying military service was killing my marriage—I mean, that was a lie, but I couldn’t perform my duties after all that, and that’s the truth,” Beals said passionately.

 

“To the best of your knowledge, did all 16 crewmembers of that flight resign within a year of the incident?” the Admiral asked.

 

“I know of nine, ma’am, can’t speak for the rest,” Beals said.

 

Admiral Reynolds showed the panel DD-214s—certificates of release or discharge summarizing a service member’s qualifying active-duty military service—for all crewmembers on the AC-130 that fateful day. She said JAG had attempted to contact them all, but three had died in the interim and the rest refused to provide testimony.

 

She thanked the Beals for appearing and asked Slife’s attorney if he wished to cross-examine the witness. Defense counsel jumped at the chance.

 

“So, Lieutenant Beals—”

 

“I’m a civilian now and prefer Mr. Beals, or even Jeremy is fine,” Beals interjected.

 

Slife’s lawyer smirked. “Shouldn’t you be proud of your service?”

 

“I love my country, sir, but pride—I take no pride in what we embarked on. You call me Mr. Beals, and I’ll call you whatever you want,” Beals said.

 

“So, Mr. Beals, just so we’re clear: You never saw the deployment order, which could’ve been fabricated, and just heard of it from Captain Monroe, who, obviously, isn’t present in this courtroom,” the defense counsel said antagonistically.

 

“We left Hurlburt Field fully loaded—25 and 40mm Gattling guns loaded and 105mm Howitzer shells secured in cargo. We had an attack plan, GPS coordinates to hit, were told to make multiple passes over the target until it was rubble. Even if I thought it was training before we took off, once Captain Monroe briefed us, it, it wasn’t training. It doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to get that fact,” Beals countered.

 

“But you never saw the hardcopy order until today, in this courtroom, right?” the defense lawyer said.

 

“That’s right, but when we got back to Florida, that asshole there, Slife, was standing on the tarmac, and for two hours he berated us, told us how disappointed he was, and how pissed off President Obama would be—and what a dick he was—for not killing the militia people in Michigan. The guy you’re representing, that prick Slife sitting there, had the cockpit voice recorder removed, and who the hell knows what he had done with it. I know we were on a kill mission, kill Americans, no one can tell me otherwise,” Beals said.

 

Admiral Reynolds asked the defense attorney if Slife wished to testify.

 

“My client is innocent, why would he?” Slife’s lawyer barked.

 

Ten minutes later, the panel ruled Slife guilty, recommending he be hanged. Admiral Reynolds assented and scheduled Slife’s execution for May 12.

How many does that leave us with? That leaves us with one indictment. Alan Wilson signed off on a deal where he was, uh, convicted of one indictment, third degree. Remember, over a thousand photos and videos of toddlers as young as three, including animals.

 

It's disgusting. They did the deal in fifteen minutes. You wanna guess how much time this pedophile served? He served one day in jail. It was, quote, time served ONE DAY for all this.

 

You know what that makes? Alan Wilson, South Carolina's attorney general, you know what that makes him? He protects pedophiles. He's a pedophile protector. This is disgusting.

Funny thing, Germany pulled itself out of the shameful Weimar republic with 30% unemployment and rampant degeneracy in just half a decade, eliminated it's debt and became an industrial engineering powerhouse fabbing amazing things that're still around TTD.
