Waste of the Day: Covid Loans For 11-Year-Olds

 

A weekly allowance or a lemonade stand are great ways to teach young kids how to manage their money. A loan from the Small Business Administration is not.

 

Yet according to the Department of Government Efficiency, the SBA issued 5,593 loans in 2020 and 2021 worth $312 million to businesses whose listed owners were 11 years old or younger. Either America’s children have suddenly become expert entrepreneurs or, more likely, another round of fraud from the Covid-19 pandemic has been uncovered.

 

DOGE also claimed that the SBA gave 3,095 loans worth $333 million to borrowers who were listed as 115 years or older, bringing the total age-related fraud to $645 million.

 

An SBA spokesperson confirmed to the fact-checking site Snopes that "According to our preliminary analysis, SBA can confirm that over 5,500 loans, totaling about $312M, were distributed to businesses whose only listed owner was 11 years old or younger at the time of the disbursement."

 

The White House did not offer additional context to Snopes or FOX News, and it’s unclear how the loans were actually used. Isabel Casillas Guzman, the SBA administrator at the time when the loans were paid, also did not return Snopes’ request for comment.

 

Snopes noted that it’s possible the loans were paid to adult borrowers, but the recipients appear as children in the government database because of poor recordkeeping.

 

Either way, the mistake is serious. The Pandemic Response Accountability Committee recently claimed that at least $79 billion of fraud during the pandemic was “readily preventable,” but government officials were not verifying Social Security numbers before paying out loans.

Background: Though DOGE provided taxpayers with a great service by announcing the potential fraud publicly, full transparency would require the government to release records showing the loans so DOGE’s claims can be independently verified.

 

That’s a common theme with DOGE’s efforts to fight government waste. After DOGE announced it had cancelled 7 million active Social Security numbers for people 120 years or older, OpenTheBooks filed a Freedom of Information Act request for a list of Social Security disbursements by age group. The Social Security Administration claimed that no records exist.

 

OpenTheBooks also analyzed every program cancelled by DOGE as of May 27 and found that the average person can only verify the dollar figures for 42% of the contracts and 27% of the grants. That doesn’t necessarily mean DOGE’s dollar figures are mistaken, but it means that public sites like USAspending.gov that record government spending data are insufficient for full transparency because they do not update in real time.

Healthcare stocks nosedive as $793 billion Medicaid cut fuels closures, premium hikes, and mass coverage loss

 

Healthcare just got shoved off a fiscal cliff. Stocks tied to the industry are bleeding out. The sector’s underperforming the S&P 500 by the widest spread in over two decades. Through July 3rd, 2025, healthcare’s YTD return sits at -21.4%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 crept up 6.2%. Delta doesn’t lie. Major insurers are limping: UnitedHealth down 39.8%. Elevance Health off 32.4%. Molina Healthcare clipped by 18.7%. Investors are pulling the plug.

 

Why? Medicaid’s being torched. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act cuts $793 billion from federal Medicaid funding over the next ten years. The ink dried last Thursday. No phase-in. No cushion. Nearly 20 million Americans could lose coverage by year’s end. The CBO ran the numbers, projects a 27% drop in Medicaid enrollment by January 2026.

 

Medicaid is more than patient subsidies. It’s hospital operating cash. It’s rural survival kits. Nearly 40% of America’s hospitals get most of their funding from Medicaid disbursements. That goes dark, places go under. Closures already underway in Kentucky, Idaho, and parts of upstate New York. Not mergers. Not buyouts. Full shutdowns. One facility in Boise laid off 173 workers last week and announced it’s going cash-only by October.

 

Insurance premiums follow blood trails. Here’s how: When people lose Medicaid, they either buy expensive private plans or fall back on employer coverage. Not all employers handle that well. Sick employees mean higher group risk scores. That spikes premiums for everybody under the company umbrella. Employers don’t eat that cost. It passes straight to worker paychecks. Some early numbers? Delta Air Lines raised employee premium contributions by 11.2%. Lowe’s bumped their copays 16%.

 

Premiums aren’t fair split. Insurance works off shared risk algorithms. But when 20 million seniors flood the private market, actuarial tables snap. People aged 65+ carry higher chronic risks, heart failure, diabetes, renal collapse. So their entry rebalances the books on the backs of younger employees. Congressional staff reports show average employee coverage premium could increase 13% by Q2 2026. That’s just baseline modeling.

MSNBC and CNN suffered staggering losses in viewership over the past year — while Donald Trump’s ascendancy supercharged Fox News in the cable news ratings war.

 

The left-leaning networks — which will both be spun off by their respective parent companies —suffered year-over-year declines in all major metrics for the second quarter compared to the same period last year, according to the latest Nielsen data, which was reported by AdWeek.

 

Comcast-ownedMSNBC, with its rabid anti-Trump lineup of anchors, drew an average 1.008 million primetime viewers from April to June, a year-over-year decline of 15%, Nielsen figures show.

 

In the the advertiser-covered 25-to-54 demographic, primetime viewership plunged 20%, to 91,000 compared to last year — despite star anchor Rachel Maddow returning to full-time duty during the first 100 days of the Trump administration.

 

Jen Psaki took over her 9 p.m. primetime slot Tuersdays through Fridays midway through the second quarter ratings period.The exodus of eyeballs was even worse during the day, with total viewership plummeting 26%, to an average of 596,000, and 31%, to 57,000, in the key demo compared to the same quarter last year.

 

CNN, which has languished in last place despite paying anchor Anderson Cooper a reported $18 million in salary, averaged 538,000 total viewers in primetime for the three-month period and 105,000 in the demo, according to Nielsen

 

Year-over-year, the networksaw declines of 13% in total viewersin primetime and a 15% drop in the 25-54 demo.

 

The cable news pioneer, owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, dropped 14% in total viewers during the day, to an average of 406,000, and 16% in the demo, to 71,000, year-over-year, according to Nielsen.

 

CNN attempted to put a positive spin on its shrinking viewership, touting strong June numbersas well as its robust digital and streaming audience worldwide. CNN’s total viewership in June rose 26% over May, with notable gains in key demos during all day parts, the company said.

 

“June was the highest month of 2025 for CNN television in the US among both P25-54 and [total viewers], with CNN being a top 5 network in all of cable,” a spokesperson told The Post on Wednesday. “Stories like these are an outdated view of the media landscape and do not reflect how audiences today actually consume news.”

 

Fox News, meanwhile, continued to dominate its rivals — extending its winning streak to 94 consecutive quarters as the top-rated cable news network.

 

The conservative-leaning network’stotal primetime viewership spiked 25%, averaging 2.633 million, and 34%, to 304,000, in the demo compared to the second quarter of last year. During total day, it climbed 25% in total viewers, to 1.632 million viewers, and drew 202,000 in the demo, a 31% increase, compared to last year.

 

It was the second-highest-rated second quarter in network history with weekday total day viewers, trailing its coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, according to AdWeek.

A woman is in jail after she and a former financial adviser were accused of stealing millions of dollars from former Miami Dolphins safety Reshad Jones.

 

WPLG-TV, Isaiah Williams, Jones' former financial adviser, is accused of stealing $1.58 million from Jones by using his access to the former Pro Bowler's personal bank account. WPLG reported court records show Williams used the money on luxury items, legal fees and child support.

 

Another $1.03 million was laundered from Jones' account with help from Octavia Monique Graham, whom Jones told investigators he never met.

 

Jones' attorneys issued a statement Thursday, calling the alleged theft "yet another troubling example of a professional athlete being exploited by a wealth management firm he trusted.

 

"In this case, the wrongdoer was a Vice President at one of the world's largest financial institutions – Bank of America's investment management division, Merrill Lynch," Chase Carlson and Jeff Sonn said in a statement. "We have filed a lawsuit to hold Merrill Lynch accountable and are working to recover all damages our client has suffered."

 

Jail records show Graham is imprisoned at Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach, Florida, on a charge of first-degree grand theft. WPLG reported Graham, 49, also faces two counts of money laundering.

 

Williams has not been arrested for his involvement, according to WPLG.

The intervention came amid tensions between the Obama and Biden camps as they braced for a tough fight against Donald Trump. In the end, the ageing Biden withdrew from the race in favor of his vice-president, Kamala Harris, who was defeated by Trump.

 

Obama’s prescient anxiety is captured in the upcoming book 2024: =How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America== by journalists Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager and Isaac Arnsdorf, a copy of which was obtained by the Guardian.

 

The authors describe how Biden, trailing in opinion polls, kept hearing complaints from congressional Democrats that his campaign lacked a presence in their district.His staff in Wilmington, Delaware, were “despondent”and the president confided in one aide:“I have a leadership problem on the campaign.”(first of all they had a fake president problem, most of all)

 

On 20 November 2023, Biden received a call from Obama wishing him a happy 81st birthday, and invited his former boss to the White House for lunch.Obama remained “slightly incredulous” that Biden was running for a second term, the book says.

 

When the pair met for lunch in December, Obama argued that dividing the campaign leadership between Wilmington and Washington was not suitable for the fast decision-making required by a modern presidential election.

 

“After the lunch,” the authors write,“Obama did not leave the White House right away. He stopped to visit with Biden’s senior staff, many of whom used to work for him, and shared his account of what he and Biden had discussed. Obama was more blunt with the staff. ‘Your campaign is a mess,’ he told them.”

 

Biden took heed of the warning and, in January, ordered the White House deputy chief of staff, Jen O’Malley Dillon, to fix his campaign. Soon after, Biden announced that O’Malley Dillon would move to Wilmington to become the campaign chair, with longtime adviser Mike Donilon remaining in Washington as chief strategist.

 

ButObama was resented by some in the Biden inner circle. Earlier in 2023, he had filmed videos to help the president with online fundraising. “In one clip, Obama reminded Democrats he had ‘won a couple of these’ elections, causing some of Biden’s aides to roll their eyes,” the book reports.

 

“There was a lot of overlap among aides to Obama and Biden,but to Biden loyalists, Obama was a prick. They thought he and his inner circle had constantly disrespected and mistreated Biden, despite his loyal service as vice president.”

 

Dawsey, Pager and Arnsdorf add: “They felt vindicated when for the first time during Biden’s presidency, Obama publicly returned to the White House and began by saying ‘Thank you, Vice President Biden.’ Obama was quick to claim he was joking, but to Biden’s stalwarts it was merely the latest example of Obama’s arrogance.”

 

Biden abandoned his bid for re-election after a disastrous debate performance, giving Harris just 107 days to run in what was the shortest presidential campaign in modern history. The book recounts how Trump survived criminal investigations, assassination attempts and Republican challengers to take on and beat Harris in the election.

China’s Nuclear Deception: The Treaty That Would Handcuff America’s Military

 

China announced this week its willingness to “take the lead” in signing the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, a move that comes while Beijing rapidly expands its nuclear arsenal.

 

The announcement, made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, followed news that both China and Russia have agreed to become signatories to the decades-old Bangkok Treaty. The Bangkok Treaty, formally known as the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), is a comprehensive nuclear disarmament agreement that creates one of the world’s most extensive nuclear-free zones.

 

America has not signed the Bangkok Treaty due to two primary objections, both rooted in concerns over limiting U.S. military operations and strategic flexibility in Southeast Asia. The treaty protocol requires nuclear-armed states to give unequivocal “negative security assurances”, a binding promise never to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against treaty members. The U.S. opposes this requirement because it seeks to preserve strategic ambiguity in its nuclear doctrine.

 

Officials argue that such absolute assurances could conflict with alliance commitments, including defense treaties with the Philippines and Thailand, where the U.S. may need to retain the option of nuclear retaliation in response to chemical or biological attacks.

 

Additionally, U.S. nuclear strategy depends on the threat of nuclear use to deter not only nuclear but also large-scale conventional attacks. The treaty’s rigid language allows no exceptions, even in extreme scenarios, which Washington sees as a serious constraint on deterrence.

 

Past agreements have shown how security assurances can lead to unintended entanglements. A good example is the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, in which the U.S., UK, and Russia pledged security assurances to Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan in exchange for giving up their nuclear arsenals. These included commitments to respect sovereignty, avoid economic coercion, and respond to nuclear threats. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and again in 2022, those assurances triggered pressure for U.S. involvement.

 

If the United States signs the Bangkok Treaty protocol, comparable dynamics could unfold in Southeast Asia. For example, if China were to use military force against treaty parties such as the Philippines, Vietnam, or Malaysia, the U.S. could face strong pressure to intervene due to formal commitments made under the treaty. Similarly, in scenarios involving nuclear coercion, where China threatens to use nuclear weapons against ASEAN countries, the U.S. might feel obligated to respond, having extended security guarantees through the protocol.

This produces what military strategists call an “umbrella without teeth.” ASEAN countries would receive American promises of protection, legal commitments to their nuclear security, and expectations of deterrence. But U.S. protection would lack credibility because it cannot include the threat of nuclear response precisely in the region where such threats are most likely. China, aware of these legal limitations, would understand that the U.S. is self-constrained.

 

This dynamic benefits China in several ways. It allows Beijing to threaten ASEAN countries with nuclear weapons from outside the treaty zone while knowing the U.S. cannot respond in kind. It forces Washington into expensive, high-risk conventional military responses and creates doubt among allies about America’s commitment once they realize U.S. nuclear deterrence is legally restricted.

 

In short, the Bangkok Treaty could create the same dynamic seen in the Budapest Memorandum: allies expect protection, but legal constraints prevent the U.S. from delivering credible deterrence. The result could be either failed commitments or costly wars fought without the full spectrum of American power. It’s a textbook example of a multilateral agreement that increases U.S. obligations while decreasing U.S. capabilities, exactly the type of strategic trap that foreign policy realists warn against.

 

Several factors make the Bangkok Treaty potentially more consequential than Budapest. Geographically, it covers ten countries and vast maritime zones in the South China Sea, a region central to global commerce and the U.S.-China strategic rivalry. In contrast, the Budapest Memorandum involved only three landlocked or inland nations.

 

Strategically, while Ukraine was important, it was not central to global trade; Southeast Asia, by contrast, controls critical shipping lanes. And finally, the adversary in the Bangkok case, China, is far stronger than Russia was in the 1990s, with rapidly growing military capabilities and status as a near-peer competitor. Any conflict in this region would be far more complex and dangerous.

 

This sets up a classic foreign policy dilemma: signing the Bangkok Treaty risks entangling the U.S. in regional conflicts with reduced military flexibility, while refusing to sign allows China to present itself as the peaceful power and portray America as hostile to nuclear disarmament. Yet from a national security perspective, declining to sign would make the U.S. safer. It would also reinforce America’s longstanding policy of strategic ambiguity, which helps deter conflict in flashpoints like Taiwan by complicating Beijing’s planning and avoiding automatic entanglement in foreign wars.

Wyoming truckers who say they were dreading a federal regulation to put speed limiting devices on their trucks are praising President Donald Trump's reversal of the Biden-era agenda preparing them to go into effect.

 

Daniel Ratzlaff, co-owner of Cheyenne-based American Trucking LLC, said the devices — called speed governors — are often to blame when one trucker driving 68 mph tries to pass another going 67 mph, and the maneuver takes several minutes and bottlenecks the interstate.

 

Many major carriers govern their trucks at around 68 mph for insurance purposes, he said.

 

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced last week that, in response toTrump’s April executive order to push trucker-friendly policies, the agency is reversing its earlier call for speed-governor mandates.

 

“Mandating speed limiters on heavy-duty trucks isn’t just an inconvenience — it is a safety hazard when drivers are forced to go slower than the flow of traffic,” says the June 27 announcement,

 

The U.S. DOT is withdrawing its proposed rules on speed governors, which its sub-agency the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrationhad announced during the Biden administration in 2022.

 

The FMCSA later floated a proposed top speed of 68 mph for commercial trucks, some outlets reported.

 

The Shortcuts

Governors introduce other hazards by making truckers who are limited both in the speed they can go and the number of hours they can drive in a stretch by law feel rushed — and likelier to undertake other shortcuts.

 

“He’s more apt to rush, period, to get that load delivered and get to that next pickup,” said Ratzlaff. “Running stop signs; running red lights — he’s more apt to be a dangerous truck driver than somebody that can actually do the speed limit.”

 

As for Ratzlaff, he knows his tires are rated for 75 mph, so he sets his cruise control for that. He added that he’s confident enough in the tires to pass people at 78 mph when needed.

 

“And I think that’s more than fast enough,” Ratzlaff said.

 

To Paul George of Casper-based 2G Trucking LLC, the change of course is great news.

 

“I think it’s bullshit that they ever thought they should govern trucks,”said George.

 

He referenced studies concluding that zones with differing speed limits for large carriers and the motoring public are more dangerous than one-speed highways.

 

“Four-wheelers,” or the motoring public, have gotten sloppier with their driving, George said, adding that both high school curricula and society should return to an emphasis on driver skill and safety.

 

“It’s about time that someone within the government started looking out for the real people, instead of just making more laws to prohibit people,” said George in support of the DOT’s new course.

Camp Mystic, on the banks of the Guadalupe River in Hunt, Texas, has been operated by generations of the same family since the 1930s.

Camp Mystic, the Christian summer camp for girls on the Guadalupe River where at least 20 children were missing in catastrophic flooding on Friday, is nearly a century old. Its facilities include a recreation hall that was constructed in the 1920s from local cypress trees.

In a brief email to parents on Friday morning, Camp Mystic said it had sustained “catastrophic level floods.” The camp has two sites along the river in Hunt, Texas.

Parents of campers who have not been accounted for have been notified, the email said. About 750 girls were at the camp this week, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick of Texas said at a news conference on Friday.

The camp said that it was assisting with search-and-rescue operations, but that it did not have power, water or Wi-Fi and was struggling to get more help because a nearby highway had washed away.

On social media and in text messages, parents circulated photos of some of the missing girls, and exchanged hopeful stories that they were hearing about dramatic rescues: girls clinging to trees, or floating downriver to a boys camp five miles away.

Camp Mystic aims “to provide young girls with a wholesome Christian atmosphere in which they can develop outstanding personal qualities and self-esteem,”its website said. It draws from families around Texas and beyond, with the youngest campers entering third grade in the fall.

The camp was established in 1926, according to its website, and has been run by generations of the same family since the 1930s. The current owners, Dick and Tweety Eastland, have been with the camp since 1974. They worked alongside the previous owners for years after graduating from the University of Texas in Austin. Camp activities include archery, cooking, cheerleading, fishing and a variety of sports. Videos posted to the camp’s Instagram account show large groups of girls participating in group dance performances this summer.

The affected stretch of the Guadalupe River is home to several summer camps for children, including Camp La Junta for boys, about five miles from Camp Mystic. The boys camp informed families on Friday that all campers there were safe and fed, but evacuations would not begin until at least 7 p.m. local time on Friday.

The Facebook page for another nearby girls camp, Heart o’ the Hills, reported that it was not in session when the flooding took place.
