SADIQ KHAN LEADERSHIP AMBITIONS

Sadiq Khan refuses to back Keir Starmer over Labour leadership rules

Party leader has failed to win union support for plan to end one member, one vote system

Adam Forrest

Thursday 23 September 2021 11:11 BST

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/starmer-sadiq-khan-labour-leadership-b1925475.html

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has refused to back Sir Keir Starmer’s plan to end the one member, one vote system which elected Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader.

Labour mayor was asked three times if he supported Sir Keir’s proposal to replace existing rules with a return to an electoral college system, which would give MPs and unions a much greater say.

But Mr Khan three times spurned the chance to back the party leader. “I’ve got to be frank, as the mayor of London, internal party rules isn’t at the fore of my mind,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

The senior Labour figure said he had not had “a chance to look into the changes being considered” and repeated that the plan was “not at the fore of my mind as mayor”.

Sir Keir’s efforts to change the leadership rules have sparked another internal dispute after failing to secure union support ahead the party’s conference in Brighton, which starts on Saturday.

The Independent understands union leaders do not want the proposal to go to a vote at the party conference, while left-wing grassroots group Momentum warned it could “mark the start of a civil war in the party”.

Unite’s new general secretary Sharon Graham has urged Sir Keir to “think again” – calling the proposed changes “unfair, undemocratic and a backwards step”.

Under Sir Keir’s plan, Labour members would only get a third of the votes in future leadership contests, while Labour MPs and the unions would also be given a third of the vote.

Despite pressure to delay the proposal until after the conference, the Labour leader is said to be considering putting his idea to the party’s governing body on Friday.

Former shadow chancellor John McDonnell, a leading figure in the Corbyn era, accused Sir Keir of focusing on “internal factional pursuits” in a bid to give the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) more power.

The attacks come as Sir Keir said set out his vision for Labour to be “Britain’s bricks and mortar” in an 11,500-word essay for the Fabian Society published on Wednesday night.

The response has been mixed. Commentator Rafael Behr said the document was “a necklace of platitudes strung together with banalities, fastened with cliche,” but former Gordon Brown adviser Theo Bertram said it had “substance and significance”.

Labour frontbencher Lucy Powell called it a “well-written, compelling read”, but Mr McDonnell told The Independent the lengthy pamphlet was filled with “platitudes” and did not have any information on “what a Labour government would actually do.”

Oliver Dowden, Conservative Party co-chairman, said: “If this is Starmer’s ‘big vision’ then he should have gone to Specsavers. Labour are talking to themselves about themselves. They’re all essays and no action.”

Meanwhile, Mr Khan has warned that time is running out to act on the climate emergency, set to have devastating effects on the capital. “We either take bold action now or face the consequences, with catastrophic impacts on our environment,” he will say at a speech on Thursday.

The mayor will launch a London-wide environmental campaign to raise awareness of the crisis and engage Londoners with changes such as the ultra-low emission zone expansion.

It comes as analysis suggests rising temperatures could make the Tube potentially unbearably hot for more than a month a year, while a quarter of London’s rail stations are now at high risk of flooding.

Sadiq Khan has stated that Andy Burnham is raising "legitimate concerns" about Keir Starmer's leadership, but he has firmly ruled out any personal ambition to challenge for the Labour leadership himself. Khan confirmed his intention to run for a fourth term as Mayor of London, emphasizing his commitment to serving the city.

Sadiq Khan acknowledged that Andy Burnham has voiced "legitimate concerns" about the Prime Minister's leadership, affirming that Burnham is entitled to raise them.

When asked if Burnham was positioning himself for the Labour leadership, Khan stated that was "your characterisation" and refrained from commenting on the political motivations behind Burnham's actions.

Khan explicitly ruled out leaving his role as Mayor of London, stating, "There is no reason I would give this job up for another job in politics" and confirming his intention to stand for a fourth term.

He reiterated his focus on delivering for Londoners and dismissed speculation that he might "do a Burnham" and return to Parliament.

Khan also noted that it is not surprising there might be a "small minority" of MPs unhappy with the leadership, but expressed confidence that the upcoming Labour conference would be a positive event for the party in government.

here is something for people to remember and take into account.

london is like every other major capital around the world.

this has been a plan of the w.e.f and their C40 cities agenda 21 plan.

The have flooded the cities driving up prices, turning the cities in migrant infested crime ridden hell holes, the centre of all major cities are well policed but crime still occures there.

as you go outside into the different zones there is moar crime with less response.

those that lived in those cities have almost all moved out and cashed in, they have either wasted their money on drink and drugs or lost it on gambling and sins, meaning the money goes back to the banksters.

The properites are being bought up by hedgefunds and turned into spaces or share hmo's, this is being done with a well organised plan by blackrock, vanguard, state street and pension funds of the city of london also known as the corporation.

it is the central banksters and the elites.

division will not help, people need to unite.

the way labour are going the are uniting everyone from men, women, old, young and everything inbetween.

the problem in many nations is the muslim brotherhood and its many subsidiaries like cair etc..

no one likes khan apart from those who are profiting off his agenda. the left here consists of the feminists, unions, and liberal elites.

business's and people are under pressure.

how bad will it get. probably as bad or worse as europe and new york etc.

hold the line.

IN TIME

Plot

In 2169, people are genetically engineered to stop aging on their 25th birthday, when a one-year countdown on their forearm begins. When it reaches zero, the person "times out" and dies instantly. Time has thus become the universal currency, transferred directly between people or stored in "time capsules". Several major areas called Time Zones exist; Dayton is the poorest, a manufacturing "ghetto" where people rarely have over 24 hours on their clocks, whereas in New Greenwich, the richest Zone, people have enough time to be essentially immortal.

Will Salas, a 28-year-old Dayton factory worker, lives with his 50-year-old mother Rachel. One night, he rescues a drunken 105-year-old man named Henry Hamilton from 75-year-old Fortis and his Minutemen, a group of time-robbing thugs. In a secret location, Hamilton, who has 116 years on his clock, reveals to Will that the people of New Greenwich hoard most of the time, while constantly increasing prices to impoverish people in less prosperous districts. The next morning, he transfers all but 5 minutes of his time to a sleeping Will, then times out before Will can stop him, falling off a bridge. Raymond Leon, the 75-year-old leader of a unit of police-like Timekeepers, erroneously assumes Will robbed and killed Hamilton.

Heeding his friend Borel's warning against possessing excess time in Dayton, Will donates 10 years (the length of their friendship) to him before departing, planning to relocate to New Greenwich with Rachel. However, that night, Rachel suddenly finds herself with insufficient bus fare to return to Dayton, having exhausted her earnings from two days' work in the Garment District to liquidate a two-day loan. The uncaring driver forces her to run, but she arrives a few seconds too late for Will to rescue her and times out at the last moment in his arms, devastating him. The next morning, he furiously decides to avenge her passing by visiting New Greenwich, internalizing Hamilton's words regarding the inequity of the time system.

Arriving in New Greenwich, Will meets 110-year-old time-loaning businessman Philippe Weis and his 27-year-old daughter Sylvia at a casino. While playing poker, Will nearly times out but eventually wins over a millennium in a flawless gamble. Sylvia invites him to a party, and Will commutes there by purchasing a new sports car. Raymond arrives and apprehends Will, who insists his innocence in Hamilton's death. Rather than attempting to prove Will's guilt, he simply confiscates all but two hours of Will's time, explaining it does not belong in Dayton.

Fortis's gang ambushes Will and Sylvia, who have escaped back to Dayton with him taking her hostage, leaving them with 30 minutes each. Will visits Borel's residence to retrieve some spare time, but his wife Greta answers, tearfully explaining that he has drunk himself to death. After the two obtain a day each by pawning Sylvia's diamond earrings, Will calls Philippe to request a 1,000-year ransom to be paid into the time-mission for the desperate, releasing Sylvia when he declines. Raymond encounters Will, but when Sylvia accidentally shoots him in the shoulder, Will transfers two hours to Raymond, allowing him to survive long enough for his squad to retrieve him, and purloins his car.

Now committed to crashing the system, Will and Sylvia rob Philippe's time banks, donating the extra capsules to the destitute, but soon realize that prices are simply increased to compensate for the extra time. Fortis's gang ambushes them, but Will successfully times out Fortis in an arm wrestling match by using his deceased father's technique and kills his Minutemen. He and Sylvia then decide to rob Philippe's vault of a 1,000,000-year capsule. Raymond pursues them to Dayton, where he was born and raised but eventually escaped from, but fails to stop them from distributing the stolen time. Having neglected to collect his per diem, he times out. Will and Sylvia nearly time out themselves, but survive by taking Raymond's salary.

Television reports show factories in Dayton shutting down as everyone abandons their jobs due to possessing sufficient time to sustain themselves. Having witnessed the consequences of Raymond's obsession with the pair, his colleague Jaeger orders the Timekeepers to return home. Will and Sylvia progress to larger banks, still attempting to level the system.
