Skysense has partnered with Avansig, to autonomously power the drone for Prosegur, a multinational security company.

Skysense says Prosegur’s surveillance drone can execute its own patrol route in a building and land itself on Skysense’s charging pad to recharge. The company says the lightweight, fast-charging infrastructure eliminates the need for battery removal or manual charging every time a drone battery runs out.

During surveillance patrols, the drone records and streams real-time video, and sends alerts to the security central station when potential security threats or breaches are discovered.

“We realized we needed a charging partner at the beginning of the project because we want the drone to work completely unattended,” said David Trillo, CEO of Avansig. “We were in contact with other companies, but we chose Skysense because we felt that their solution was more mature. According to Bloomberg sources, representatives of Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He are having private conversations as they look for ways to reengage in negotiations. However, they have cautioned that a specific timetable, the issues to be discussed and the format for talks aren’t finalized, but at least there is agreement among the principals that more talks need to take place.

After some early success, negotiations have been stalled for weeks, with both sides in a standoff. Meanwhile, high-level US talks on trade posture with China are ongoing. Complicating matters, however, is a harder line approach taken by US trade representatitve Robert Lightizer, who is in charge of the US's "301 investigation" that resulted in the tariffs, and which concluded that China has been stealing US technology.

The next wave of tariffs is set to kick in as soon as Wednesday, with the possible imposition of $16 billion of duties on Chinese imports - a move Beijing has vowed to respond to with the same level of tariffs on US products.

"Joshua Schulte, 29, was charged in a new grand jury indictment with providing WikiLeaks with a massive trove of U.S. government hacking tools that the online publisher posted in March 2017, the Justice Department announced on Monday.

Schulte was previously facing child pornography charges in federal court in New York, but the indictment broadens the case to accuse him of illegally gathering classified information, damaging CIA computers, lying to investigators and numerous other offenses.

In January, attorneys involved in the child porn case revealed in court that Schulte was the target of a major investigation into WikiLeaks’ release of a CIA collection known as “Vault 7.”

Politico also has a copy of the new indictment, which replaces the previous indictment for Schulte over his alleged involvement in child pornography. That case raised some eyebrows as to prosecutor intent and Schulte’s actual involvement in the traffic over his servers. At the time, the suggestion was that the DoJ ginned up the child-porn charges as a way to keep Schulte detained while they built a case for espionage against him. If so, the DoJ isn’t backing down, as those charges remain in the new indictment."

Democrats face dilemma on impeachment

A majority of Democratic voters — 71 percent — say they want to impeach President Trump. It’s the question posed to Democratic Rep. Marc Veasey the most in his solidly blue Texas district: “Do we really have to wait until 2020?”

“There’s a desperation,” Veasey said, but he uses the opportunity to explain why it’s not a viable option.

At least not yet.

Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal is bombarded by similar lines of questioning in her Seattle district: "How can you impeach? Why hasn’t he been in impeached and how do we move forward impeachment?”

The freshman progressive voted in favor of impeaching Trump last December, but she doesn’t promise her voters they’ll get what they want. It’s a process, she says.

The reality is impeaching a president historically comes at great cost to the party tasked with carrying it out. Instead of joining their base in the rallying cry, Democrats are adhering to an unspoken code: Don’t talk about impeachment and don’t campaign on impeachment. If Democrats win the majority it won’t suddenly flip a switch.

The ultimate question for Democrats isn’t whether Trump has committed impeachable offenses — most of them believe he has — but whether impeaching Trump is wise and necessary. It would be highly unlikely that Democrats move to impeach Trump without Republican support. A two-thirds majority in the Senate is required to actually convict the president and remove him from office and it's widely expected that Republicans will maintain control of the upper chamber.

“Impeachment is always a political issue,” Jayapal said. “I’ve been trying to explain to my constituents you can’t move forward on impeachment unless you have people on the other side who are willing to vote for it.”

A House under Democratic control would hold hearings on a laundry list of potential abuses by Trump, from possible emoluments violations to conflicts of interest and payments ahead of the election to silence women engaged in alleged affairs with Trump. Democrats would likely launch their own investigation into Russian hacking of the 2016 election and whether Trump is compromised.

Those hearings will happen, Jayapal said. But slapping Trump with subpoenas, a power afforded to the majority party, to prove the president is profiting off of the presidency in a possible violation of the Constitution is very different than holding a hearing on articles of impeachment. And so far, Democrats have demonstrated they would proceed with caution unless special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation produces a smoking gun or Trump does something that breaks Republicans’ unwavering support for him.

“[Republicans] want to fuel the flames because they believe they can win if people think Democrats are trying to impeach Trump but it’s just not real,” Jayapal said. “It just doesn’t happen like that.”

But there are those in the Democratic Party who want it to happen like that.

The base and the billionaire

In 2014, former hedge fund manager Tom Steyer wanted the midterm elections to be about climate change. In 2018, Steyer wants them to be about impeaching Trump. He’s poured millions into the impeachment effort to the frustration of House Democrats, who grumble that it’s a self-serving, futile exercise.

But Steyer is just getting started.

“Democrats can focus on the economy and removing Donald Trump from power at the same time,” said Kevin Mack, lead strategist for Steyer’s Need to Impeach campaign.

In focus groups conducted by Need to Impeach with disaffected Democrats and frustrated progressives, Mack said, voters are saying they can’t trust the Democratic Party.

In late July, followers of the QAnon conspiracy theory on Reddit and users on 4chan ran with and hyped a video in which an actor claimed that Hanks and Spielberg were pedophiles. QAnon followers also created videos pushing the claim on YouTube, helping to drive the accusations to the top of YouTube search for Hanks and Spielberg.

Washington –The U.S. Department of the Treasury today released a report identifying improvements to the regulatory landscape that will better support nonbank financial institutions, embrace financial technology, and foster innovation.

“American innovation is a cornerstone of a healthy U.S. economy. Creating a regulatory environment that supports responsible innovation is crucial for economic growth and success, particularly in the financial sector,” said Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin. “America is a leader in innovation. We must keep pace with industry changes and encourage financial ingenuity to foster the nation’s vibrant financial services and technology sectors.”

The report issued today is Treasury’s fourth report in response to Executive Order 13772. Issued by President Trump in February 2017, this E.O. calls on Treasury to identify laws and regulations that are inconsistent with the Core Principles for financial regulation it set forth.

In drafting the report, Treasury consulted extensively with a wide range of stakeholders focused on consumer financial data aggregation, lending, payments, credit servicing, financial technology, and innovation.

Treasury’s recommendations are designed to facilitate U.S. firm innovation by streamlining and refining the regulatory environment. These improvements should enable U.S. firms to more rapidly adopt competitive technologies, safeguard consumer data, and operate with greater regulatory efficiency.

Treasury’s report identifies just over 80 recommendations that are designed to:

Embrace the efficient and responsible use of consumer financial data and competitive technologies;

Streamline the regulatory environment to foster innovation and avoid fragmentation;

Modernize regulations for an array of financial products and activities; and

Facilitate “regulatory sandboxes” to promote innovation.

President Trump’s recent Tweets expressing displeasure with the Federal Reserve’s (minor) interest rate increases led to accusations that President Trump is undermining the Federal Reserve’s independence. But, the critics ignore the fact that Federal Reserve “independence” is one of the great myths of American politics.

When it comes to intimidating the Federal Reserve, President Trump pales in comparison to President Lyndon Johnson. After the Federal Reserve increased interest rates in 1965, President Johnson summoned then-Fed Chairman William McChesney Martin to Johnson’s Texas ranch where Johnson shoved him against the wall. Physically assaulting the Fed chairman is probably a greater threat to Federal Reserve independence than questioning the Fed’s policies on Twitter.

While Johnson is an extreme example, history is full of cases where presidents pressured the Federal Reserve to adopt policies compatible with the presidents’ agendas — and helpful to their reelection campaigns. Presidents have been pressuring the Fed since its creation. President Warren Harding called on the Fed to lower rates. Richard Nixon was caught on tape joking with then-Fed chair Arthur Burns about Fed independence. And Lloyd Bentsen, President Bill Clinton’s first Treasury secretary, bragged about a “gentleman’s agreement” with then-Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan.

President Trump’s call for low interest rates contradicts Trump’s earlier correct criticism of the Fed’s low interest rate policy as harming middle-class Americans. Low rates can harm the middle class, but they also benefit spend-and-borrow politicians and their favorite special interests by lowering the federal government’s borrowing costs. Significant rate increases could make it impossible for the government to service its existing debt, thus making it difficult for President Trump and Congress to continue increasing welfare and warfare spending.

President Trump will have a long-lasting impact on monetary policy. Two of the three sitting members of the Fed’s board were appointed by President Trump. Two more of Trump’s nominees are pending in the Senate. The nomination of economist Marvin Goodfriend may be in jeopardy because Goodfriend advocates “negative interest rates,” which is a Federal Reserve-imposed tax on savings. If Goodfriend is defeated, President Trump can just nominate another candidate. President Trump will also be able to nominate two other board members. Therefore, by the end of his first term, President Trump could appoint six of the Federal Reserve’s seven board members.

The specter of a Federal Reserve Board dominated by Trump appointees should cause some to rethink the wisdom of allowing a secretive central bank to exercise near-monopoly control over monetary policy. Fear of the havoc a Trumpian Fed could cause may even lead some to support the Audit the Fed legislation and the growing movement to allow Americans to “exit” the Federal Reserve System by using alternatives to fiat money, such as cryptocurrencies and gold.

Given the Federal Reserve’s power to help or hinder a president’s economic agenda and reelection prospects, it is no surprise that presidents try to influence Fed policy. But, instead of worrying about protecting the Fed from President Trump, we should all worry about protecting the American people from the Fed. The first step is passing the Audit the Fed bill, which Congress should do before adjourning to hit the campaign trail. This will let the people know the full truth about America’s monetary policy. Auditing, then ending, the Fed is key to permanently draining the welfare-warfare swamp.
