The Magna Carta, Latin for "Great Charter," was sealed by King John of England on June 15, 1215, at Runnymede, a meadow beside the River Thames near Windsor.
It was drafted by Archbishop Stephen Langton to address grievances from rebellious barons who opposed King John's arbitrary rule, heavy taxation, and military failures, particularly the loss of English territories in France.
The document aimed to restore peace by limiting royal power and establishing that the king was subject to the law, not above it.
Containing 63 clauses, the Magna Carta primarily protected the rights of the barons and the Church, guaranteeing freedom from illegal imprisonment, access to swift and impartial justice, and protection from excessive taxes.
It also established principles such as due process and the right to a fair trial, with Clause 39 stating that no free man could be imprisoned or punished except by the lawful judgment of his peers or by the law of the land.
A council of 25 barons was created to ensure the king upheld the charter, though this provision was not effective in practice.
The charter failed as a peace treaty almost immediately. Pope Innocent III annulled it just weeks after its signing, declaring it "null and void" and invalid, which led to the First Barons' War.
After King John's death in 1216, his successor, the nine-year-old Henry III, had the Magna Carta reissued in 1216, with some of its more radical clauses removed to secure baronial support.
It was reissued again in 1217 and 1225, with the 1225 version becoming the definitive form and confirmed by later monarchs.
Although initially a feudal agreement benefiting the elite, the Magna Carta evolved into a powerful symbol of liberty and the rule of law over the centuries.
In the 17th century, it was invoked by figures like Sir Edward Coke to challenge royal authority, influencing the Petition of Right and the Habeas Corpus Act.
Its principles deeply influenced the American Founding Fathers, shaping the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, particularly the Fifth Amendment’s due process clause.
Today, four original 1215 copies survive, held in Lincoln Cathedral, Salisbury Cathedral, and the British Library.
The Magna Carta remains a foundational document in the development of constitutional government and the protection of individual rights in both England and the United States.

Do not introduce Digital ID cards
We demand that the UK Government immediately commits to not introducing a digital ID cards. There are reports that this is being looked at.

We think this would be a step towards mass surveillance and digital control, and that no one should be forced to register with a state-controlled ID system. We oppose the creation of any national ID system.
ID cards were scrapped in 2010, in our view for good reason.
