Follow-up emails from Epstein’s assistant confirmed the meeting, noting afterward, “It was nice seeing you.” Lutnick’s representatives have since claimed he ignored subsequent communications, but the records indicate the visit proceeded as planned.

Business entanglements further complicate the narrative. On December 28, 2012—just days after the island lunch—Lutnick and Epstein signed a contract through their respective entities to invest in Adfin, an advertising technology firm that later folded. Lutnick represented CVAFH I LLC, while Epstein signed for Southern Trust Company Inc., joining seven other shareholders.

Correspondence continued into 2014, with discussions about additional fundraising involving Cantor Ventures, a subsidiary of Cantor Fitzgerald, the financial powerhouse Lutnick had led as CEO since 1991. A source close to Lutnick told CBS News that as a minority investor, he was unaware of other participants at the time, but the documents underscore a shared venture post-Epstein’s conviction, when his criminal history was public knowledge.

Even after 2014, contact didn’t cease. Appeals court endorses Trump policy of holding many ICE detainees without bond hearings

A federal appeals court on Friday endorsed the Trump administration's policy of holding broad groups of immigration detainees without access to bond hearings, a major legal victory for President Trump and his deportation crackdown.

In a 2-1 decision, a panel of federal judges at the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals said the Trump administration had properly reinterpreted an immigration law last year to disqualify many unauthorized immigrants arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement from being able to ask an immigration judge to be released on bond.

Previously, immigrants who had lived in the U.S. unlawfully for years were generally eligible for bond hearings, and the opportunity to persuade an immigration judge that they were not flight risks and should be allowed to fight their deportation outside of a detention center. Mandatory detention had been historically limited to recent border crossers and those convicted of certain crimes.

But the Trump administration took the position that anyone who entered the U.S. illegally, irrespective of how long ago, is subject to mandatory detention during their deportation proceedings. The only mechanism for release under that policy was if ICE decided to parole them out of custody on humanitarian or public interest grounds.

The seismic policy change has led ICE to indefinitely hold detainees who entered the U.S. illegally years or even decades ago and who previously would've been eligible for bond, including those without criminal records.

The mass detention policy has been challenged in federal courts across the country, straining the resources of government lawyers. Most judges have found the policy to be illegal.

But the 5th Circuit panel disagreed and upheld the Trump administration's legal position, reversing two lower court orders.

The majority opinion — penned by Reagan-nominated Judge Edith Jones and backed by Trump-nominated Judge Stuart Kyle Duncan — sided with the Trump administration's view that federal law provides for mandatory detention of large numbers of unauthorized immigrants who were apprehended in the interior of the U.S. and deemed "applicants for admission."

"The text says what it says, regardless of the decisions of prior Administrations," the opinion read. "…In any event, that prior Administrations decided to use less than their full enforcement authority…does not mean they lacked the authority to do more."

Attorney General Pam Bondi celebrated the ruling, calling it a "significant blow against activist judges who have been undermining our efforts to make America safe again at every turn."

Judge Dana Douglas, a Biden nominee, dissented from the majority opinion. She wrote that the government's claim that the law calls for mandatory detention ignored "historical precedent" and "wave[d] away" the fact that prior administrations hadn't sought to detain people without bond en masse.

"And for what?" writes Douglas, arguing that the majority opinion was "based on little more than an apparent conviction that Congress must have wanted these noncitizens detained — some of them the spouses, mothers, fathers, and grandparents of American citizens."

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed that it has purchased land and a facility in San Antonio for a detention center, though the agency would not say where nor what it paid for it.

Sources told the San Antonio Express-News earlier this week that ICE bought Oakmont 410, a vacant 639,595-square-foot facility at 542 S.E. Loop 410 in the city's East Side, from Atlanta-based Oakmont Industrial Group. The agency had not publicly commented on a transaction until Wednesday.

"These will not be warehouses - they will be very well structured detention facilities meeting our regular detention standards," an ICE spokesperson said in a statement. "Every day, the (U.S. Department of Homeland Security) is conducting law enforcement activities across the country to keep Americans safe. It should not come as news that ICE will be making arrests in states across the U.S. and is actively working to expand detention space."

The spokesperson said the agency is "targeting criminals including murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang members and more."

ICE is using funding from President Donald Trump's signature domestic legislation, which he calls the "big, beautiful bill," to expand its detention space, the spokesperson said.

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), a Trump ally, called the meme the most racist thing he had ever seen on the internet. Within hours, the White House changed its narrative; unbeknownst to Trump, an unnamed staffer with access to his Truth Social account had reposted the meme.

Three thousand miles away, in the halls of Camp Pendleton, home to the White Hat council, military brass empowered by Trump to take down the Deep State were pondering a poignant question: Who exactly has access to Trump’s social media accounts? And for what reason?

There are still lawsuits pending which challenge the current refugee ban, and seen in the best light, the legal battles waged thus far have succeeded in forcing early versions of the ban to be rewritten, thus holding the doors open for at least some refugees. But the difficult truth is, over the past two years, very few refugees from the banned countries have been allowed into the U.S. In 2016, the U.S. resettled 12,587 Syrians; in 2018 just 60. In 2016, the U.S. resettled 9,020 Somalis; in 2018, only 250.

“Thousands have been hurt by the bans,” said Melanie Nezer, HIAS Senior Vice President of Public Affairs. “The reality is thousands of refugees who otherwise would have had a chance at a future in the U.S. do not have that chance to find safety here.”
