KPMG Ends U.S. Gov't Audit Business After Losing Army Contract

KPMG, one of the Big Four accounting firms, is winding down its federal government audit business after losing a $64 million-a-year U.S. Army audit contract, a major setback as the Department of War under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth moves to bring in another accounting firm.

According to the Financial Times, the Army's shift to a new auditor comes as pressure intensifies on Hegseth to gain control of the DoW's finances after nearly a decade of failed independent audits.

The DoW, which oversees an annual budget of roughly $840 billion, has not passed an independent audit in eight years, and Washington lawmakers have set a deadline for the department to do so by 2028.

"We're ending the wasteful process of agency-by-agency opinions and slashing the number of disjointed separate audits by two-thirds," Hegseth said. "The mission is simple: break down bureaucratic barriers to get you, the taxpayer, concrete results."

FT sources said the Army was KPMG's largest federal audit client, and 450 U.S. staff who oversaw the federal audit work will be transitioning to other roles.

"Over the past few years, KPMG has prioritized advisory services for the federal government," KPMG said, adding, "We are transitioning out of federal audit roles through an orderly, multiyear process, meeting all client and regulatory obligations. As demand continues to grow across both audit and advisory, we will be redeploying our talented federal audit professionals across the firm to meet client needs."

Meanwhile, EY remains the prime auditor for the Air Force, Navy, and Marines. The Marines are the only military branch to have received an unqualified audit opinion.

The DoW says the new consolidated audit strategy will streamline the process toward full audit compliance by 2028.

Last month, Platte Moring, the Pentagon's inspector general, stated, "This new composite approach to auditing and its implementation reflect meaningful progress toward compliance with the statutory mandate for the department to achieve a clean audit opinion by 2028."

We have previously reported that DOGE has placed more than 400,000 DoW contracts under scrutiny, while Goldman has been bearish on government IT services for the same reason: the Trump administration is trying to clean up the financial mess inside the DoW.

The problem is that entrenched bureaucracy and swamp-like career DoW personnel appear more focused on preserving the status quo than fixing the department.

Whether Hegseth can fix the DoW remains an open question.

US Congress introduced a bill to extend some veteran style protections to Americans who serve in the Israeli Defense Forces. The bill called H.R. 8445 treats their time in the IDF like US military service for things like job protections and financial relief.

It was pushed by Republican lawmakers and its been getting attention again lately.

Putin Presents Victory Day Truce In Ukraine During 90-Minute Trump Call

With things in the Persian Gulf and the Iran War 'stuck'… it's apparently time to pivot back to that other 'stuck' war, in Ukraine. President Trump on Wednesday spoke over the phone with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, with the call reportedly lasting an impressive 1.5+ hours, and the talk centered on finding ways forward both with the Iran and Ukraine conflicts.

The most important item to emerge was that Putin reportedly proposed declaring a ceasefire in Ukraine on May 9, which is Russia's 'Victory Day' in World War II, and Trump endorsed the idea.

Russian Presidential Aide for Foreign Affairs Yury Ushakov told reporters that the call was initiated by the Moscow side - and according to him, "Vladimir Putin informed his American counterpart of his readiness to declare a truce for the period of Victory Day celebrations."

Here is some of the readout and Ushakov's remarks to the press in Moscow:

"At Trump's request, Vladimir Putin described the current situation along the line of contact, where our troops are holding the strategic initiative and pushing back the enemy’s positions," Ushakov told reporters.

"Both Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump expressed essentially similar assessments of the behavior of the Kyiv regime led by [Volodymyr] Zelensky, which, incited and with the support of the Europeans, is pursuing a policy of prolonging the conflict."

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has devastated swathes of Ukrainian territory, killed thousands of civilians and forced millions to flee their homes.

Putin said he was ready "to declare a ceasefire for the duration of Victory Day celebrations. Trump actively supported this initiative, noting that the holiday marks our shared victory," Ushakov said.

The timing is interesting, given that the White House is clearly consumed with the Iran war, the Hormuz Strait crisis, and the expanding economic fallout globally and at home. Putin it seems is seeking the opportunity to soften Washington's stance toward Moscow's perspective of the Ukraine war.

But they did also heavily discuss Trump's Operation Epic Fury. Ideas for resolving the conflict were discussed - though few details on this have emerged. Putin as expected called for peace, and said that extending the ceasefire was the right move by Trump. According to some of the published statements:

"Vladimir Putin considers Donald Trump's decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran to be the right one, as this should give negotiations a chance and, overall, help to stabilize the situation."

But Putin also "highlighted the inevitable and extremely damaging consequences not only for Iran and its neighbors, but also for the entire international community, should the U.S. and Israel resort to military action once again," Ushakov said.

He added Russia was "firmly committed to providing every possible assistance to diplomatic efforts" on the Middle East war, and said the call was held at Moscow's initiative.

Despite that Iran remains a key regional ally of Russia's, it remains that Moscow has benefited from both the easing of sanctions on its oil exports at sea, and rising global oil prices - both the result of the Iran war.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A federal grand jury has indicted 16 individuals in separate-but-related indictments for drug trafficking and illegal firearms’ possession, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Catherine L. Crosby.

Three indictments filed in U.S. District Court charge the following individuals:

Aumori Jaimon Willis, 22, Nasir Ahmad Fluker, 22, Jarek Ahmad Burroughs, 21, and Robert Blake Stovall, 33—all of Anniston, Alabama—and Edward Damon Wade, 32, of Jacksonville, Alabama, were charged with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute and distribution of methamphetamine. The alleged incidents occurred between September 2025 and March 2026, in Calhoun County, Alabama. The indictment also charges Stovall with using and carrying a firearm during and relation to a drug-trafficking crime and Willis and Burroughs with possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime.

Logan Chase Turner, 28, of Boaz, Alabama, and Mary Ann Alexander, 60, of

Eastaboga, Alabama, were charged with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute and distribution of methamphetamine. The alleged incidents occurred in January 2026 in Calhoun County, Alabama. The indictment also charges Turner with being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime.

Bradderick Dewayne Nolan, 52, Barry Eugene Nolan, 58, Cederick Lamon Woolverton, 57, Dantreas Thomas, 42, and Leiquore Tavera Crook, 42—all of Anniston, Alabama— Robert Jamiel David, 43, Toshi Maurice Holliday, 48, and Jermaine Jenkins, 51—all of Munford, Alabama—and Gregory Lee Burnett, 48, of Gadsden, Alabama, were charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and distribution of methamphetamine. The alleged incidents occurred between June 2025 and March 2026, in Calhoun County, Alabama. The indictment also charges Bradderick Nolan with being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. Bradderick Nolan, Barry Nolan, Holliday, Jenkins and David were also charged with use of a communication facility to commit a drug trafficking crime.

This operation is part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative established by Executive Order 14159, Protecting the American People Against Invasion. The HSTF is a whole-of-government partnership dedicated to eliminating criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the United States and abroad. Through historic interagency collaboration, the HSTF directs the full might of United States law enforcement towards identifying, investigating, and prosecuting the full spectrum of crimes committed by these organizations, which have long fueled violence and instability within our borders. In performing this work, the HSTF places special emphasis on investigating and prosecuting those engaged in child trafficking or other crimes involving children. The HSTF further utilizes all available tools to prosecute and remove the most violent criminal aliens from the United States. Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion hands down interim report into Bondi terror attack

The Antisemitism Royal Commission has delivered its interim report into the nation's counter-terrorism architecture, including information sharing gaps and oversight.

It comes after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese refused to call the national inquiry for 25 days after the December 14 attack.

Royal Commissioner Virginia Bell delivered the interim report, containing 14 recommendations, to Governor General Sam Mostyn on Thursday.

The recommendations focus on addressing gaps exposed by the terror attack, including leadership and coordination at a federal level.

Mr Albanese will react to the initial findings at a 10.30am press conference.

Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek told Sky News the report would be "absolutely critical" for the government.

"Australians are still grieving the event and still searching for answers. I know Virginia Bell will have done a very thorough job," she said on Thursday.

"It will be a conversation in the Australian public, no doubt. And people will see the interim report later today. They'll have the opportunity to read it for themselves."

The report is expected to raise sweeping concerns about the nation’s counter-terrorism preparedness and coordination.

The recommendations are expected to focus on systemic weaknesses in counter-terrorism machinery, particularly intelligence sharing, and government preparedness.

The intelligence sharing concerns relate to the overseas travel by the alleged terrorists, who visited the southern Philippines, a known terrorist hotspot.

Sky News understands the trip taken by the Akrams to the southern Philippines was not for military training but to seek a spiritual blessing for the Bondi attack.

Despite Border Force and the AFP being alerted to the trip, it is not clear that this intelligence was passed on to ASIO or NSW Police.

The first block of public hearings in the Royal Commission will be held from next Monday, May 4.

The hearings, which will run until May 15, will focus on defining and exploring the nature of antisemitism in its historical and contemporary manifestations.

The Royal Commission is expected to hear from witnesses sharing their lived experiences of antisemitism and its impacts on Jewish Australians.

Ms Bell will also probe the metrics for assessing the prevalence of antisemitism in institutions and society, including through incident reporting and survey data.

The final report will be delivered by the one-year anniversary of the attack on December 14, 2026.

Shadow education minister Julian Leeser said the report is expected to scrutinise Australia's intelligence and security agencies' knowledge of the attack.

"This part of the report is going to look at what our intelligence and security agencies knew and what level of cooperation there was across the different policing forces, both federal and state," he said.

"And will hopefully make some recommendations along those lines to make sure this doesn't happen again."

Mr Leeser encouraged all Australians to make a submission to the commission.

"My plea to Australians this morning, whether they are Jewish or not, is please make a submission to the Royal Commission on Antisemitism - you don't have to be Jewish to do it," he said.

"But if you don't like the way our country has changed and the way our country has failed to deal with the growth of antisemitism… it's really important that the Royal Commission hears from you."

As a young constable in the late 1970s, I attended several Lodge meetings, at the urging of colleagues. I decided against joining – chiefly because I’m a non-drinker and the social side didn’t appeal to me.

But I was under no illusions that I could easily advance my career by being ‘on the square’, as the jargon has it.

At one police station in south London, we joked that four groups ran the Met: the Freemasons, the Roman Catholic guild, the ‘Scottish mafia’ and – a very feeble fourth – the top brass. (The Scottish mafia were expats from the other side of Hadrian’s Wall, who all looked out for each other.)

On at least one occasion, my refusal to roll up my trouser leg and become a Mason cost me dear.

Data from Australia's wastewater drug monitoring program suggests methamphetamine use, also known as speed, ice or crystal meth, is at a record high.

Cocaine is also up. MDMA may be levelling off. Heroin is fluctuating.

At first glance, these findings from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission this week sound alarming.

But before we draw big conclusions about worsening drug use, it's worth taking a closer look at what this data can and can't tell us.

What wastewater data actually measures

Wastewater testing works by analysing sewage for traces of drugs people have used. Researchers test samples from treatment plants to estimate how much of a drug has been consumed by the population connected to that system.

It measures metabolised drugs. So it's able to tell the difference between drugs that have been flushed down the toilet and drugs that have been excreted.

It's a clever method that avoids some of the issues of self-report surveys, where people may under-report illegal behaviour.

It also gives close to real-time data unlike population surveys that are only conducted every few years.

ATF Unveils Proposed Rule Changes Meant to Help Law Enforcement, Gun Owners

The 34 changes will be more amendments than the ATF has issued in the last 15 years combined.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is proposing to roll back and modify gun regulations in an attempt to benefit law enforcement and gun owners

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche introduced the 34 proposed policy changes at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) at an April 29 press conference, saying, “President [Donald] Trump has been clear on this from Day 1, the Second Amendment is not negotiable.”

The changes will usher in a shift in firearm policy, supported by Second Amendment advocates, with more rule changes than the ATF has issued in the last 15 years combined.

Included in the proposal is the rescinding of the brace stabilization rule, which reclassified many pistols equipped with brace attachments as short-barreled rifles under the National Firearms Act. This required registration and additional regulations.

Another proposed change will be to roll back the “engaged in the business” rule. Prior to this announcement, the rule was expanded to apply business standards to anyone who sells guns with the intent of making a profit, rather than those who sell firearms with the intent of making that business their livelihood.

The acting head of the DOJ also lauded changes being made to digital record-keeping at the ATF, and the modernization of rules about how records are sourced.

Blanche repeatedly tied the package of changes to the protection of gun owners’ rights, saying, “President Trump, this administration, this newly confirmed director of the ATF, views the Second Amendment as nothing other than one of the most important amendments in our Constitution. It’s not a second-class amendment. And so the regulations that we’re adjusting today reflect … those policies.”

The acting attorney general also stressed that the changes are not taking tools away from police, but rather will support law enforcement: “We are not taking tools away from the people, the men and women who go after violent criminals. … If anything, what we’re doing today will actually help law enforcement, because clearer rules mean better compliance, and better compliance means better enforcement.”

The package will next be published in the Federal Register, after which there will be an open public comment period, consistent with the Administrative Procedure Act.

This will allow time for industry stakeholders, law enforcement, advocacy groups, and the general public to submit feedback. The ATF will hold stakeholder briefings and speak to affected groups about the details. Following the review of comments, the ATF and DOJ may refine the proposals before they are finalized.

Gun control advocates have spoken out against the rule changes, saying the administration is bowing to Second Amendment advocates, loosening regulations and possibly putting Americans in danger.

“Four days after the nation watched gunfire break out at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the Trump administration’s answer is to gut common-sense gun safety laws and sabotage the only federal agency dedicated to keeping guns out of criminal hands,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Trump’s enablers in Congress will have nowhere to hide when gun safety voters head to the polls this November—and accountability is coming.”

Blanche also announced the confirmation of former Deputy Director Robert Cekada as the new director of the ATF.

Cekada said he sees the changes working in accordance with the ATF’s mission: “In today’s package, you will see 34 clear, common-sense regulations that rescind, modernize or clarify language within the National Firearms Act, the Gun Control Act, and more. We are proposing to remove unnecessary hurdles that were standing in the way of law-abiding citizens and businesses.”

Iran War Cost $25 Billion in First 2 Months, Pentagon Says

Combat operations against Iran have cost the U.S. military about $25 billion in two months, a top Pentagon accounting official told House Armed Services Committee members on April 29.

The Wednesday hearing marked the first time Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine have testified publicly to Congress since U.S. and Israeli forces commenced attacks on Iran on Feb. 28. U.S. and Iranian forces exchanged fire for about five and a half weeks before the parties entered into a ceasefire agreement on April 8.

Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), the ranking member on the committee, asked the Pentagon to account for the costs of U.S. munitions expended as well as for equipment destroyed in the course of the fighting.

Jules Hurst, the acting War Department comptroller, estimated those costs at about $25 billion.

Hurst said munitions accounted for most of it, but said he also factored in operations and maintenance and equipment replacement costs. Hurst joined Hegseth and Caine at the hearing, as Congress weighs military funding requests for fiscal year 2027.

The Trump administration has been working on submitting a supplemental funding request to Congress to cover the war’s costs, but has yet to finalize it or settle on an exact figure.

“We will formulate a supplemental through the White House that will come to Congress once we have a full assessment of the cost of the conflict,” Hurst said.

The Pentagon is already seeking a $1.5 trillion military and defense spending budget for fiscal year 2027. The request amounts to a 42 percent increase over fiscal year 2026 military spending, which totaled approximately $1.03 trillion.

Among other items, the Trump administration’s 2027 military budget request seeks $52.9 billion to boost procurement for 12 weapons systems that the Pentagon has classified as critical munitions.

In March, President Donald Trump announced he had met with the CEOs of BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon parent RTX Corp., Boeing, Honeywell, and L3Harris Technologies to discuss boosting their munitions production levels. Weapons produced by the companies—including the Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile defense systems and offensive weapons like the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile—have featured heavily in the Iran war.

Beyond the immediate material costs to replace weapons and equipment, the Iran war has also disrupted global oil and gas flows out of the Middle East, leading to rising prices for consumers.

Former Sun Prairie High School Dean of Students Sentenced to 18 Years for Producing Child Pornography

MADISON, WIS. – Chadwick M. Elgersma, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Robert Gilkey-Meisegeier, 31, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to 18 years in federal prison for producing child pornography. The prison term will be followed by 25 years of supervised release. Gilkey-Meisegeier was also ordered to pay a $10,000 assessment. He pleaded guilty to this crime on February 6, 2026.

“Make no mistake, Gilkey-Meisegeier is a predator,” said U.S. Attorney Elgersma. “He used his position as the Dean of Students to target, groom, and exploit students in his care. I commend the courage of the victims and the diligence of investigators who worked tirelessly to hold Gilkey-Meisegeier responsible for his crimes. Today’s sentence sends a clear message – anyone who sexually exploits children will face serious consequences.”

Gilkey-Meisegeier originally joined the Sun Prairie School District in July 2022 as a youth advocate. Two years later, in August 2024, the school district promoted him to Dean of Students, a position that he held until the district terminated him on June 9, 2025.

In the spring of 2023, two individuals complained to school district personnel about Gilkey-Meisegeier’s concerning behavior towards certain students. In April 2025, a third individual submitted an anonymous tip to district personnel alleging that Gilkey-Meisegeier was having an inappropriate relationship with a student. He denied the allegation.

Pensacola, Florida – Christopher W. Glover, 47, of Simms, Alabama, pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of Attempted Sex Trafficking of a Minor, and one count of Traveling in Interstate Commerce to Engage in Illicit Sexual Conduct. The plea was announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

Court documents and pretrial hearings in federal court in Pensacola reveal that the defendant communicated online with who he believed to be a 14-year-old female, and offered to pay her hundreds of dollars in return for sexual acts in October 2025. The defendant then traveled from Alabama, where he worked for the Baldwin County School District, to Pensacola to meet with the minor. The purported minor, however, was an undercover law enforcement officer. When the defendant reached Pensacola to engage in sexual acts with the minor, he was taken into custody. He possessed over $200 in cash intended to pay for the illicit sexual acts.

Glover faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years’ imprisonment, and up to life imprisonment. Glover will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Economic Fury Targets Iran Shadow Banking Facilitators

WASHINGTON—Today, as part of Economic Fury, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated 35 entities and individuals that oversee Iran’s shadow banking architecture, facilitating the movement of the equivalent of tens of billions of dollars tied to sanctions evasion and Iran’s sponsorship of terrorism. These networks allow Iran’s armed forces—including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)—to access the international financial system to receive payment for illicit oil sales, purchase sensitive components for missiles and other weapons systems, and transfer money to Iran’s terrorist proxies.

“Iran’s shadow banking system serves as a critical financial lifeline for its armed forces, enabling activities that disrupt global trade and fuel violence across the Middle East,” said Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. “Illicit funds funneled through this network support the regime’s ongoing terrorist operations, posing a direct threat to U.S. personnel, regional allies, and the global economy. Financial institutions are on notice: Any institution that facilitates or engages with these networks is at risk of severe consequences.”

Today’s action is being taken pursuant to E.O. 13902, which targets persons operating in Iran’s financial sector, and E.O. 13224, as amended, a counterterrorism authority. These designations build on OFAC’s January 15, 2026 shadow banking action, which targeted the rahbar networks of Bank Melli and Bank-e Shahr (Shahr Bank).

Today’s designations expose and disrupt the Iranian regime’s mechanisms for receiving payments for oil and other commodities, thereby increasing costs and reducing revenue for the regime’s destabilizing activities, and exposes individuals involved in facilitating the regime’s abuse of the international financial system.

This action is in furtherance of the President’s National Security Presidential Memorandum 2 (NSPM-2), which undergirds Treasury’s continued campaign of maximum economic pressure against Iran’s shadow banking, money laundering, and sanctions evasion networks. Since February 2025, OFAC has sanctioned approximately 1,000 Iran-related persons, vessels, and aircraft as part of this campaign.

Alongside today’s action, OFAC is issuing firm guidance to warn about the significant sanctions exposure related to making “toll” payments to the Government of Iran or the IRGC for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. These payments create sanctions risk for U.S. and non-U.S. persons, including financial institutions. For further information, please see FAQ 1249.

New pictures of suspect in correspondents' dinner shooting emerge

The California man accused of opening fire outside the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner snapped a selfie before the attack, donned in black with ammunition strapped to his body, newly released images revealed Wednesday.

The images were included in a court filing detailing the government's opposition to any bail for Cole Tomas Allen, who is accused of attacking the annual gathering of Washington, D.C., journalists and government officials.

He's been charged with one count of attempted assassination of the president, interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition with intent to commit a felony and discharge of a firearm during a violent crime.

"Had the defendant achieved his intended outcome, he would have brought about one of the darkest days in American history," Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Jones wrote.

The evidence "of his guilt is overwhelming," the prosecutor added.

Allen photographed himself at about 8:03 p.m. ET Saturday, standing in front of his hotel room mirror "wearing a black dress shirt, black slacks, and what appears to be a red necktie, tucked into his pants," according to the court filing.

Prosecutors said the image showed the suspect "wearing a small leather bag consistent in appearance with the ammunition-filled bag later recovered from his person," along with a shoulder holster, a sheathed knife, pliers and wire cutters, the court document said.

Minutes later, Allen allegedly "rushed the screening checkpoint on the Terrace Level of the Washington Hilton with a raised shotgun," Jones wrote.

The court filing also included images of the shotgun Allen allegedly used in the confrontation Saturday, along with the knives and a loaded .38-caliber pistol.

After Allen allegedly rushed past a metal detector, a Secret Service agent "drew his service weapon and fired five times at the defendant," the prosecutor wrote.

"The defendant fell to the ground, was restrained by law enforcement and was placed under arrest," Jones added. "The defendant suffered a minor injury to his knee but was not shot."

A court-appointed defense attorney for Allen could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday.

"This was a planned attack of unfathomable malice that risked the lives of hundreds of people whose only transgression was attending an annual event celebrating the media and featuring the President of the United States," Jones wrote.

"It was, at its core, an anti-democratic act of political violence."

Allen got to Washington, with his legally purchased weapons, on an Amtrak ride from Los Angeles to Chicago and then from there to the nation's capital. The route Allen took is "famous for its scenic views of the mountains and deserts of the American West before traversing the vast expanse of the Great Plains," according to Jones.

Allen kept a "running note on his phone of his observations and thoughts" during this long journey, the prosecution said.

In contrast to the violent acts he was allegedly planning, Allen appeared to show great appreciation for the gorgeous scenes of America passing by his train window.

"He wrote that '[t]he southwest desert in spring Distant wind turbines looming like snowy mountains across the hazy NM desert,' that 'Chicago is cool; kinda like an Iowa small town was scaled up to LA size,' and that Pennsylvania’s 'woods are awesome (look like vast fairy lands filled with tiny trickling creeks in spring apparently,'” Jones wrote.

How a Supreme Court case could reshape the South's congressional representation

Louisiana voters and elected officials are waiting on a Supreme Court decision that could reshape voting in much of the South.

Why it matters: The case targets the Voting Rights Act, a key tool for challenging racially discriminatory election maps, and could allow Republicans to lock in more congressional seats across the South.

The big picture: Louisiana lawmakers, civil rights groups and other citizens have been in a back-and-forth over the state's congressional map for years.

In the latest chapter, a group of Louisianans who self-described as "non-African Americans" sued the state for relying too heavily on race for its current congressional map. Federal judges agreed, which set the stage for the Supreme Court to take on Louisiana v. Callais.

The intrigue: After deferring the case over the summer, the Supreme Court expanded its potential impact beyond Louisiana by asking lawyers back this fall to address the case's implications on the Fourteenth and Fifteenth amendments, which deal with race and elections.

The implications lie with Section 2 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which was intended to protect Black voters from disenfranchisement by preventing race-based voting discrimination.

A Supreme Court decision that chips away Section 2, as it seems poised to do, can extend far beyond Louisiana.

What they're saying: The Voting Rights Act "was the guardrail," said April Albright, the national legal director with the voting rights advocacy group Black Voters Matter.

If it goes away, "there's nothing left, because most of these red states also don't have robust protections for voting rights in their own state constitutions."

State of play: Black Voters Matter gamed out what that could look like.

It found that, if the Voting Rights Act gets stripped, Republicans could secure an additional 27 U.S. House seats, compared to 2024 maps. At least 19 would be tied directly to losing Section 2.

Those changes typically take years to play out but, Albright says, with the Supreme Court siding with mid-decade map rewrites, it's possible it could happen much faster.

Case in point: A recent Texas redistricting decision at least indicates the justices are already in the weeds on map matters.

In that case, Texas lawmakers had crafted a mid-decade congressional map favorable to Republicans. That map remains under contest, but the Supreme Court ruled it can be used for now even though it's "indisputable" that Texas passed a new map "for partisan advantage pure and simple," Axios' Megan Stringer reports.

"It defies our rule of law," Rep. Troy Carter, a Democrat who represents one of two majority Black districts in Louisiana, tells Axios New Orleans.

"Every time we have a change in the White House, are we going to go back and, likewise, change the demographics of our congressional seats? It's not what the framers of the Constitution intended."

What we're watching: The Supreme Court doesn't share details on when it'll issue rulings.

Louisiana voters head to the polls to select congressional leadership in 2026, and state lawmakers already held a special session to adjust next year's election calendar in hopes of an early winter ruling from the Supreme Court.

But ultimately, any decision timing is up to the justices.

Arraignment hearing set for Southern Poverty Law Center in federal court (May 7th)

An arraignment hearing will be held in federal court in Montgomery on Thursday, May 7, in the Department of Justice’s case against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

According to the indictment, starting in the 1980s, the SPLC began operating a covert network of individuals who were either associated with violent and extremist groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan, or who had infiltrated violent extremist groups at the SPLC’s direction. Unbeknownst to donors, some of their donated money was being used to fund the leaders and organizers of racist groups at the same time that the SPLC was denouncing the same groups on its website, according to the DOJ.

Attorneys with the SPLC filed motions on Monday requesting a transcript of grand jury proceedings and a court order requiring Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to retract a “false and unfairly prejudicial statement” he made on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle shortly after the indictment was announced.

“Well, they communicated when they so chose, with law enforcement over the years. There’s no information that we have that suggests that the money they were paying to these informants and these members of these organizations, they then turned around and shared what they learned with law enforcement. To the contrary, or else we would have known, from their own words, that they had given this money to these guys. And we didn’t know,” Blanche said.

Addy Schmitt, an attorney representing SPLC, said in a filing on Monday, “The Court should exercise its authority to provide the relief necessary to protect the integrity of this proceeding.”

“The defense respectfully seeks an order directing the government to: (1) retract the false and unfairly prejudicial statement that Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche made on Fox News regarding the allegations against the SPLC as a pretrial equivalent of a curative jury instruction; and (2) refrain from making any further false or misleading statements about the allegations in the indictment and abide by the rules prohibiting extrajudicial statements that prejudice SPLC’s right to a fair trial,” Schmitt said.

Court Rules 2nd Amendment Covers Firearms Parts, Good News for Those Who Build Guns

What used to be a fringe hobby in the firearms world, building or customizing your own guns, is increasingly popular.

So, Wyomingites welcome a ruling by the federal 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, stating that the Second Amendment could apply to the buying, selling and possession of firearms parts without serial numbers.

AR-15 style rifles in particular can be built or customized to owners’ liking, using parts and accessories that can be purchased over-the-counter or ordered online.

“It’s like Barbie dolls for men. It’s all about accessorizing,” firearms enthusiast Nic George of Sheridan told Cowboy State Daily.

At issue is whether the purchase, exchange and possession of firearms parts without serial numbers fall solely under state commercial regulations, or has Second Amendment implications.

The 10th Circuit Court on April 23 ruled the latter, Casper Attorney Ryan Semerad told Cowboy State Daily.

Therefore, if charges are brought against somebody in connection to firearms parts, they could possibly challenge the case based on their Second Amendment rights.

Semerad said prosecutors can’t make a winning argument if they contend the case doesn’t bear on the Second Amendment.

In June 2023, Colorado enacted a law prohibiting the purchase, sale, transfer, and possession of un-serialized firearms, firearm frames or receivers, and the like, according to 10th Circuit Court documents.

“Three Individual Plaintiffs—Christopher Richardson, John Howard, and Max Schlosser—and two nonprofit Associational Plaintiffs—National Association for Gun Rights (“NAGR”) and Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (“RMGO”)—sued the state for violating their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms,” according to the court.

A district court erred when it concluded that the Colorado law didn’t implicate that Second Amendment. Because it does, in fact, implicate it, the 10th Circuit Court decided.

“If you have a blanket prohibition, that it is illegal to sell or possess these sorts of gun parts, that is a matter of the Second Amendment,” Semerad said.

“The government can’t just say, ‘it has nothing to do with bearing arms,’” he added.

Custom-building firearms wasn’t a wild West, unregulated venture to begin with, said George, who’s been doing it for decades.

The process starts with buying a part that bears a registered serial number. That’s usually the action and trigger mechanism for a bolt-action rifle, or the lower receiver on an AR-15, George said.

An AR-15 lower receiver contains the trigger mechanism, safety and magazine release.

“Every firearm has at least one part that is aregulated piece. The piece without which it won’t function. That’s usually where the serial number goes,” George said.

To buy that part, a person usually must go through a licensed gun dealer and pass a background check.

“It’s just one part, but it’s like you’re purchasing the whole gun” from a procedural and legal standpoint, he said.

From there, buyers can add whatever barrels, sights and other parts and accessories they wish.

Years ago, gun enthusiasts had to have expensive equipment, like lathes, to make parts such as barrels in their own shops or garages, George said.

Now, parts such as pre-made barrels are readily accessible at reasonable prices, he said. So, it’s becoming more common for people to build their own hunting rifles, for instance.

AR-15-style rifles are essentially the king of modular firearms, Joshua Kinderknecht, the owner of Wyoming Tactical Firearms and W.T.F. Silencers, told Cowboy State Daily.

Plenty of people still go into shops or gun shows and buy finished rifles. However, given the abundance and availability of AR-15 parts and accessories, there’s a trend toward building your own, Kinderknecht said.

“It’s extremely popular, so it’s good to know (about the 10th Circuit Court’s ruling),” he said.

Once a gun owner has the lower receiver with the serial number on it, the possibilities are practically endless, he said.

There are a wide variety of barrels and stocks of various lengths to suit shooters’ want and needs, Kinderknecht said.

What’s an AR-15 lower can be matched with more than one upper receiver and barrel assembly, each chambered for a different cartridge, he said.

That’s like having several rifles in one, Kinderknecht said. All the owner has to do to switch calibers is move the lower receiver between the various uppers, he said.

“I’ve got one AR lower that I have three different upper receivers for. It’s really handy,” he said.

Biden Admin Used ‘Benghazi’ to Hide $90M illegal loan to Planned Parenthood

Biden administration officials may have sought to dodge public records laws and congressional oversight by classifying taxpayer-backed loans to Planned Parenthood as “Benghazi,” according to findings by Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa.

Ernst, chairwoman of the Senate Small Business Committee, has been investigating Small Business Administration loans to the nation’s largest abortion provider under the Paycheck Protection Program during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a letter sent Monday to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Ernst asked for a Justice Department investigation “for potential Federal Records Act violation by concealment and/or attempted concealment” of SBA records regarding loans to Planned Parenthood and loan forgiveness.

“What does Benghazi have to do with Planned Parenthood? It appears the Biden SBA used it as a codename to hide the $90 million in taxpayer funds they gifted to the abortion provider,” Ernst told The Daily Signal in a statement.

“I’ve already exposed the Biden administration’s blatant disregard for transparency, but this potential cover-up demands answers,” Ernst continued. “I’m calling for a DOJ investigation to determine if Biden officials were illegally concealing federal records over their egregious handout to Planned Parenthood.”

The 13-page letter from Ernst to Blanche, shared with The Daily Signal, shows examples of email communications from SBA personnel.

Benghazi is most well-known to Americans as the location of a 2012 terrorist attack on a U.S. compound that resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

“I write to ask the Department of Justice (DOJ) to open an investigation into the possible unlawful concealment and attempted concealment of federal records by President Biden’s Small Business Administration officials, and potentially their White House colleagues, in their official emails regarding Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider,” Ernst’s letter to Blanche says.

The letter shows that in 2021, Peggy Hamilton, then-SBA general counsel, and other administration officials used official government email accounts in what may have been an attempt to conceal records.

On April 30, 2021, Hamilton sent a message to then-SBA Chief of Staff Antwaun Griffin explaining what she meant by writing “Benghazi” earlier in the day. “Can I schedule a meeting so we can decision Benghazi (Planned Parenthood)?” Hamilton wrote. Griffin replied one minute later, “Yes, let’s talk Benghazi.”

All government emails can generally be accessed by the public through the Freedom of Information Act and the Public Records Act.

“Under 18 U.S.C. § 2071, an individual who ‘willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, or destroys, or attempts to,’ conceal any federal record can be fined and imprisoned for up to three years,” Ernst says in the letter to Blanche.

Ernst contends congressional or public-record requests seeking Planned Parenthood documents from the SBA would miss these records because they were being concealed as “Benghazi.”

“DOJ should investigate SBA officials’ record concealments related to a series of meetings and emails, including an April 30, 2021, email from Peggy Hamilton, the SBA general counsel, with ‘Benghazi (PPP/PPH) Decisions’ in the subject line,” Ernst told Blanche. “This email appears to be the originating email for what became a months-long thread about Planned Parenthood’s SBA loans and the entity’s loan-forgiveness requests.”

Hamilton went on to work as general counsel for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh until December 2025. The Daily Signal reached out to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh to obtain contact information for the story and also sent a message to Hamilton on LinkedIn on Monday seeking comment. Neither responded by publication time.

Griffin is a general manager at Amazon Business, which did not immediately respond to an inquiry for this story.

More than 30 guns stolen from Jeffrey Epstein’s New Mexico Zorro Ranch — but staff stonewalled police probe

Dozens of guns were reportedly stolen from Jeffrey Epstein’s Zorro Ranch in 2018 — but his staff refused to cooperate when police tried to investigate.

Much of the 32-weapon arsenal was stolen from a “very large gun safe” in a garage at the pedo’s mysterious New Mexico property, while some were also snatched from two other buildings on the grounds in August 2018, a New Mexico State Police report obtained by the Santa Fe New Mexican showed.

The buildings had apparently been broken into, with at least one window smashed in the garage. Tire tracks were also found cutting across the desert grounds and leading to a slashed-open fence.

Epstein simply replied “Wild” when informed over email about the break-in.

Reports about the break-in come as New Mexico investigators are in the midst of the first extensive investigation into Zorro Ranch — located south of Santa Fe — which was largely sparked by anonymous allegations that Epstein and his cohorts strangled women to death during “rough fetish sex” on the property and buried their bodies there.

Survivors of Epstein’s abuse have also told tales about hearing talk of bizarre human breeding experiments being conducted on the isolated property.

The burglary happened at Zorro almost a year before Epstein’s suicide in a New York City jail after being arrested for sex trafficking.

His ranch staff reported the break-in to police and catalogued the stolen weapons’ serial numbers — but when police asked for the list and tried to press the investigation, they were suddenly stonewalled.

Staff then refused to provide further details on the break-in over weeks of follow-up from authorities. The investigation was closed after a month due to the staff’s refusal to cooperate, the New Mexican reported.

It remains unclear if Epstein told the staff to not speak to police, but emails released in the FBI’s Epstein Files showed he directed ranch managers to a lawyer.

“Please advise if we are to forward the list of stollen weapons to Office Byrd of NM State Police, so serial numbers extra can be sent to pawn shops, gun shows etc, in the hope that something will turn up,” the manager wrote, with Epstein then referring them to his lawyer.
