Cleveland Clinic Establishes Space Health Center

Cleveland Clinic has established the Space Health Center in the Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic, which will incorporate research, education and clinical care for cardiovascular health conditions related to space travel.

The new center is led by a multidisciplinary team of medical experts who will research the effects of space travel on cardiovascular function and health, provide cardiovascular medical care for those traveling to space, and educate healthcare professionals, medical students and the public on the cardiovascular effects of space travel.

“As space travel continues to grow rapidly, there are new health challenges and risks associated with exposure to this extreme environment,” said Kenneth A. Mayuga, M.D., cardiac electrophysiologist and director of the Cleveland Clinic Space Health Center.

“Our hope is to better understand these challenges, find ways of addressing them, and guide and support those who travel to space. We can then use the knowledge we gain from space-based research to better serve our patients here on Earth.”

As part of the center, Dr. Mayuga was recently awarded a competitive grant from the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space®, manager of the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory, to collaborate with the International Space University in France on a novel educational space program.

The grant will be used to provide a one-week educational course at Cleveland Clinic Research and the Lerner College of Medicine this summer.

“We are excited to collaborate with Cleveland Clinic in their efforts to engage and prepare the space workforce of tomorrow,” said Laurie Provin, director of strategic engagement and STEM programs for the ISS National Lab.

“Space-based research can profoundly benefit patient health on Earth, and we commend Cleveland Clinic for its efforts in pushing the boundaries of education and innovation in space medicine.”

The Space Medicine Education for STEM Inspiration (Space MedEd) project will introduce doctoral students, medical students and postdoctoral scholars to space medicine and space-related careers.

Students will study the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, the changes that occur with exposure to space and microgravity, and the challenges that astronauts face when returning to gravity.

The NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland is providing guest lectureship and also hosting a unique on-site visit to further inspire these students.

“At Cleveland Clinic, we are always looking for ways to redefine the future of medicine through research and leading-edge innovations,” said Lars Svensson, M.D., Ph.D., chief of Cleveland Clinic’s Sydell and Arnold Miller Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute.

“This collaborative center will shed light on an area that continues to be of interest to scientists, physicians and the public and will provide us insights that could help us move care forward for even the most complex cardiovascular patients.”

U.S. Air Force, Space Force make ‘explicit shift’ in RDT&E funding, experts say

The U.S. Air Force and Space Force would shift their research and development funding away from early-stage work and toward the end of the development pipeline under the fiscal 2027 budget request released this month.

The Pentagon groups its research, development, test and evaluation, or RDT&E, funding into categories based on the type of work involved. New technologies generally move through six stages: basic research, applied research, advanced technology development, advanced component development and prototypes, system development and demonstration and, finally, operational system development.

“The normal approach to RDT&E funding is you’ve got a mix of funding spread across the different stages,” said Todd Harrison, a senior analyst at the American Enterprise Institute.

But “most funding is concentrated towards [advanced component development and prototypes] and [system development and demonstration] funding. That’s for things that are in the thick of development.”

However, for fiscal 2027, the Air Force and Space Force have proposed reduced funding for the first four stages of RDT&E when compared to fiscal 2026.

In the Air Force, the largest year-over-year reduction would be in applied research, with a proposed cut of $338 million. In the Space Force, the largest reduction would be in advanced component development and prototypes, with a proposed cut of just over $1 billion.

At the other end of the RDT&E pipeline, the Air Force and Space Force proposed the largest year-over-year increases in operational system development: $13.6 billion and $16.3 billion, respectively.

“It’s an explicit shift and investment towards fielding, not necessarily research and discovery,” said Carlton Haelig, an analyst with the Center for a New American Security.

The change is “not just in dollar terms, but also as a percentage of the total budget,” said Travis Sharp, a senior analyst with the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments.

The Air Force responded to questions about this topic by saying its proposed budget doesn’t decrease overall RDT&E funding. The budget documents released so far do not offer a reason for the proposed funding shifts.

Budget analysts see two potential explanations: the maturity level of various technologies or the White House’s approach to securing funding.

According to Haelig, “most of our next-generation programs are at the stage now where [the Air Force] can start having more of an emphasis on moving them towards operational use.”

He pointed to the Family of Affordable Mass Missiles initiative, the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program and the various low-Earth orbit missile warning programs as examples.

Doug Birkey, executive director of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, said the funding shift stems from the Air Force needing “new capabilities on ramp and an operational capability at scale very fast.

There are a lot of programs that are kind of on the threshold of doing that.”

For the Space Force, Birkey attributed the funding shift to the service “having to very rapidly iterate and get stuff up operationally.”

But that technology-driven approach, according to Sharp, “kind of treats the Air Force’s RDT&E portfolio as if it has a batch of programs that need to be brought to maturity versus a continuous stream of programs.”

Harrison offered an alternative explanation, linking the proposed RDT&E shift to the budget’s overall structure.

The Pentagon’s fiscal 2027 budget requests nearly $1.5 trillion, $1.1 trillion through the normal appropriations process and an additional $350 billion through a planned reconciliation package.

“I think it is because of the reconciliation funding that they’re basically trying to find places where they can put this extra funding,” Harrison said. “This was a budget-driven budget, not a strategy-driven budget.”

Sharp said the change in RDT&E funding could be “reflecting that the Pentagon needs to try to deal responsibly with this large influx of new funding, and within the R&D account, the place that you’re best able to do that is in terms of operational system development-type activities.”

However, this “would at least be an argument for holding steady for basic research,” he added. Basic research “can’t grow that fast, but that doesn’t mean it’s got to be reduced — but actually it is being reduced” in the fiscal 2027 budget.

“That’s surprising,” Sharp said. “I wouldn’t have expected that. When the defense budget goes up, it often lifts all boats — all programs, all activities. Everybody gets more money.

There’s so much money available in this budget request; it is really surprising that there are areas that are left out.”

To mark the first anniversary of the European Space Agency’s Biomass satellite, we present a selection of striking images captured over the past 12 months, revealing Earth’s forests, and much more, in new detail.

In just one year, this pioneering mission has begun transforming our understanding of forest dynamics and advancing how scientists monitor the critical role forests play in regulating the global carbon cycle.

Launched on 29 April 2025, Biomass, an Earth Explorer mission, is the first satellite to carry a P-band synthetic aperture radar capable of penetrating dense forest canopies to measure woody biomass, including trunks and branches where most forest carbon is stored.

These measurements provide a powerful proxy for assessing carbon storage – the core objective of the mission.

Following launch and orbital insertion, the Biomass team spent several months carefully calibrating and fine-tuning the satellite during its commissioning phase, paving the way for data to become openly available to users worldwide in January this year.

Since then, the mission has begun demonstrating its scientific potential, delivering data that promise to improve estimates of forest carbon stocks and deepen understanding of how forests respond to environmental change.

Whitehouse Investigates Trump’s ‘God Squad’ Waiving Endangered Species Protections to Expand Oil Drilling

Senators seek answers from the Trump Administration regarding coordination with fossil fuel interests, compliance with the Endangered Species Act and Administrative Procedure Act

Washington, D.C. – Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW), led 26 Senators in launching an investigation into the Trump Administration’s decision to grant an Endangered Species Act (ESA) exemption for Gulf of Mexico oil and gas activities.

The decision was made by a powerful panel known as the Endangered Species Act Committee, or the “God Squad,” which can effectively end the existence of a species.

At an Endangered Species Committee meeting convened on March 31, 2026 by the Department of Interior (DOI), Department of Defense (DOD) Secretary Pete Hegseth notified the Committee of “national security findings” necessitating an exemption to the ESA in the Gulf of Mexico.

A voice vote was then taken to grant an exemption to all Gulf oil and gas exploration, development, and production activities. This was the first meeting of the God Squad since 1992.

“This swift yet opaque process raises serious questions around compliance with the ESA and Administrative Procedure Act (APA), which require transparency, public participation, and reasoned decision-making,” wrote the Senators. “…

Here, no robust public record has been made available, and the exemption risks being found ‘arbitrary and capricious’ under the APA for failing to adequately justify that it was necessary and consistent with the ESA.”

In the Committee meeting, it came to light that DOI had initially notified DOD about “recent litigation . . . halting or severely compromising oil and gas activities in the Gulf” as a major reason prompting the exemption request.

The referenced litigation appears to be a lawsuit involving the oil and gas industry in which the court issued a decision to protect Gulf endangered species that could be harmed by a Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) lease sale.

This ESA exemption builds on the Trump Administration’s pattern of prioritizing fossil fuel interests in the Gulf. During the 2025 government shutdown, BOEM approved a BP drilling project, despite its proximity to the habitat of the endangered Rice’s whale.

The species suffered a nearly 25 percent population loss after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, with an estimated current population of just 50 whales. Another oil spill could spell extinction for the Rice’s whale.

“Oil and gas industry capture of the federal government results in a life-or-death situation for wildlife—a harsh and unfortunate reality.

Species pushed to the brink of extinction may no longer prompt greater protection but instead trigger further efforts by the administration to clear regulatory obstacles to development,” wrote the Senators. “…

The ESA does not permit the government to negotiate away a species’ existence in exchange for fossil fuel production targets or political support.

It requires decisions grounded in science, transparency, and the public interest.”

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 is targeting the launch of 24 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

The Kiev regime has ramped up drone attacks on Russia’s civilian infrastructure, including repeated strikes on an oil refinery port of Tuapse that risk serious environmental impact, President Vladimir Putin has said.

He called the attacks an attempt to compensate for battlefield setbacks. He spoke about the increased terrorist threat Russia has been facing during a meeting on Tuesday dedicated to the security of the elections set to take place this fall.

The threat stems from the activities of international terrorist and extremist groups, as well as from Ukraine, Putin said.

“The Kiev regime and its backers have switched to openly terrorist methods,” the president stated.

The terror tactics are meant to compensate for the setbacks Ukraine has been suffering on the battlefield, Putin noted, adding that such actions will not alter the course of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.

He cited attacks on the oil refinery in the Black Sea port of Tuapse, which sparked a multi-day fire, warning of the growing threat posed by Ukrainian long-range strikes against Russia’s civilian infrastructure.

“The latest example is the strikes on energy infrastructure sites in Tuapse, which could potentially have serious environmental implications,” the president said.

Kiev is determined to try to jeopardize the upcoming elections in the formerly Ukrainian regions that integrated into Russia, Putin said, pointing to similar attempts previously.

“I’d like to remind you that they are not holding elections in Ukraine under the pretext of martial law, and they are trying to disrupt ours too,” he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s energy sector “further increase the oil deficit in global markets, which are already experiencing significant difficulties because of the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, and provoke further destabilization in global energy markets.”

In recent days, the Tuapse refinery and adjacent marine terminal were repeatedly subjected to long-range drone strikes, sparking repeated fires at the facility. The attacks prompted evacuations of nearby residents and emergency response measures.

The prolonged fires produced high-risk air pollution, with residents advised to use respirators, while oil spilled into the sea damaged a long stretch of the beach in the resort town.

DOJ Sues Big Tech Giant Cloudera for Blocking American Workers in Favor of Foreign Visa Holders, Same Company Sued Trump in 2017 Over Refugee Ban

Today, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division announced that it has filed a lawsuit against Cloudera Inc. (Cloudera), a Santa Clara, California-based technology company for violating the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) by intentionally discriminating against U.S. workers in favor of hiring workers with temporary visas. The complaint was filed with the Office of the Chief Administrative Hearing Officer, which has jurisdiction over cases arising under the INA.

“Employers cannot use the PERM sponsorship process as a backdoor for discriminating against U.S. workers,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “The Division will not hesitate to sue companies who intentionally deter U.S. workers from applying to American jobs.”

The complaint alleges Cloudera intentionally created a separate recruitment and hiring process to deter U.S. workers from applying, and also did not consider them, for lucrative technology jobs that the company earmarked for people with temporary employment visas. Cloudera created an email account that did not allow external emails, but still instructed applicants to use that unworkable email address to apply for jobs. The Division received a charge of employment discrimination from one U.S. worker who tried to apply using the email account Cloudera set up, but received a bounce back notification. When sponsoring current employees under the permanent labor certification program (PERM), Cloudera purposely failed to recruit U.S. workers in good faith.

The PERM program allows employers to sponsor workers for permanent resident status, only after completing recruitment of U.S. workers. But, as with any recruitment or hiring, employers cannot illegally discriminate against U.S. worker applicants based on their citizenship status during the PERM process.

This lawsuit is part of the Department’s Protecting U.S. Workers Initiative, which was relaunched in 2025. The Initiative, under which the Division has already obtained ten settlements in the last year, focuses on companies that illegally discriminate against U.S. workers in favor of those with temporary employment visas.

US Sanctions 35 Individuals, Entities To Dismantle Iran's Shadow Banking

The U.S. Treasury Department on April 28 imposed sanctions on 35 individuals and entities accused of running Iran’s secret shadow banking network.

Treasury has accused the network of transferring tens of billions of dollars to help Iran dodge U.S. sanctions and finance terrorism.

The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control is sanctioning a network of shell companies, exchange houses, and operators connected to Iranian banks, such as Shahr Bank, that have enabled the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other Iran-backed armed forces to gain access to the international financial system.

U.S. officials said the networks facilitate payments for illicit Iranian oil sales, purchases of missile components, and transfers to Tehran’s terrorist proxies.

“Iran’s shadow banking system serves as a critical financial lifeline for its armed forces, enabling activities that disrupt global trade and fuel violence across the Middle East,” Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said in a statement.

“Illicit funds funneled through this network support the regime’s ongoing terrorist operations, posing a direct threat to U.S. personnel, regional allies, and the global economy. Financial institutions are on notice: Any institution that facilitates or engages with these networks is at risk of severe consequences.”

Those targeted on Tuesday include the Farab Soroush Afagh Qeshm Company, described as overseeing fund movements for Shahr Bank’s clients through foreign front companies. Sorayya Mehri Hajibaba, an employee and foreign exchange expert, was sanctioned for facilitating transfers since at least mid-2023. And Seyyed Mohammed Mehdi Al Ghafur, an Iran-based shadow banking official, was targeted for laundering money on behalf of Shahr Bank via exchange houses.

The action also included the previously sanctioned HMS Trading FZE, along with its Iran-based sister company Tejarat Hermes Energy Qeshm Company. UK-based Shuqun LTD and its owner, Janelyn Eusebio Emperador, drew sanctions for transferring more than $70 million in payments for Iranian crude oil and distillates through 2024 on behalf of the National Iranian Oil Co. Emperador also controls Sanovo LTD and Qianza LTD.

Additional rahbar companies, which oversee shell company networks to process payments tied to Iran’s imports and exports and are linked to major Iranian banks, received sanction designations for operating in the financial sector.

The Treasury also issued new guidance threatening sanctions for entities that make “toll” payments to the Iranian regime or the IRGC in exchange for traversing the Strait of Hormuz.

North Carolina Uncovers 34,000 Dead Voters Still on the Rolls, State Board Admits it’s ‘Higher Than We Anticipated’

The North Carolina State Board of Elections has identified approximately 34,000 deceased individuals on the state’s voter rolls following a comprehensive data comparison with the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database.

On April 17, 2026, the State Board submitted 7,397,734 voter records to the SAVE system as part of its initiative to strengthen the accuracy and integrity of the state’s voter registration list.

The discovery comes as an added benefit of the State Board’s ongoing effort to verify the citizenship status of registered voters. The primary goal of comparing voter registration records with the SAVE database is to identify any non-U.S. citizens on the voter rolls and ensure that only eligible individuals are registered to vote in North Carolina, but we expect that this process will also help identify other anomalies such as duplicate registrations, name mismatches and, as highlighted here, deceased voters.

“While we expected to find some cases, this is higher than we anticipated,” said Sam Hayes, executive director of the State Board of Elections. “The benefit of entering into cross-state and federal database checks is that it allows us to uncover issues like this. Our goal is to use every available and legal tool at our disposal to achieve the most accurate voter rolls possible. Now, we must roll up our sleeves and begin the hard work to act of verifying that every person registered to vote in North Carolina is eligible. Our team, along with our state and federal will do what’s necessary to meet this responsibility.”

Election officials emphasize that list maintenance is a routine and necessary function to ensure compliance with state and federal law. The identification of deceased individuals on the voter rolls does not necessarily indicate that illegal votes were cast in their names, but it does underscore the importance of regular updates and strong interagency coordination.

The State Board will follow established procedures to verify records and will work with county boards of elections to remove deceased individuals from the voter rolls in accordance with state and federal law. These processes include cross-checking additional state and federal databases and providing due process before any removal occurs.

The comparison criteria for a SAVE database search uses voters’ names, dates of birth, and the last four digits of Social Security numbers sent to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), who then perform a cross check with the Social Security Administration.

For voters who have passed away in North Carolina, the State Board receives information from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, a process that occurs weekly and is handled at the county level. This new process of matching state voter records with the SAVE database where the result shows a person is deceased in federal records will help identify those voters who registered here at one time and then moved and passed away in another state.

Google has struck a deal to provide the Pentagon with its AI models for classified use, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The agreement came despite internal company protests and ongoing disputes over military applications of the technology. The Pentagon has been rapidly securing access to advanced AI through similar deals with major developers since last year.

The deal reportedly expands a $200 million contract signed in 2025, allowing Google’s Gemini AI to operate on classified networks. The tech-giant confirmed the agreement but provided no further details.

Brexit Boss Nigel Farage Reveals His Home Was Targeted in Firebombing Attack

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has revealed that his home was targeted in a firebombing attack in the latest example of political violence directed towards the Brexit leader.

While the world was once again forced to hold its collective breath on Saturday evening as an attempted assassin sought to slay U.S. President Donald Trump, the safety of populists throughout the West has become an increasing concern.

Over the pond in Britain, longtime Trump ally Nigel Farage has long faced acts of political violence, including all too frequent assaults, including from people throwing cement and milkshakes. Last year, an Afghan illegal migrant was also convicted of threatening to kill the Brexit boss in a series of menacing TikTok videos.

Perhaps most concerning of all was an attack on his home last year, which Mr Farage has hitherto kept quiet. Speaking to The Telegraph this week, the Reform leader revealed that last year a petrol incendiary device was pushed through the letterbox of his house in a firebombing attack.

“It was an outright arson attempt. I wasn’t at home at the time, but when I came back and opened the door, I found the damage. Luckily, it had burned itself out in the porch, and we think maybe the perpetrators were disturbed in the act. The police were all over it. They did their best, but there are no suspects so far,” he told the broadsheet.

Mr Farage said that the attack happened shortly before a string of arson attacks against cars and properties tied to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

However, unlike the Prime Minsiter, the Reform leader chose to keep the attack on his home private for fear of encouraging copycat attacks, as had previously occurred with other forms of violence against him.

Mr Farage said that he felt forced to disclose the attack now, given that it was leaked to the press that he had received a multimillion-pound gift from Reform UK mega donor Christopher Harborne prior to becoming an MP to pay for private security.

“I would rather not be discussing any of this, but I am having to because someone has got hold of material about my private finances, which is outrageous, and which I believe was illegally obtained,” the Reform leader said.

Harborne, a Thai-based cryptocurrency billionaire, is said to have given Mr Farage £5 million, in addition to donating over £12 million to the Reform party.

The personal donation to the Brexit boss was made by Harborne in 2024, before Farage came out of retirement to run for parliament, meaning that the gift was never declared as a political contribution. Harborne was reportedly with Farage when the Brexit boss was hit with a milkshake in 2019 and had become concerned over his lack of security.

“This money was given to me so that I would be safe and secure for the rest of my life,” Farage said. “I have tried and failed in the past to get security funded by the Home Office, and I don’t think the state will ever help me. I’m very much on my own and will be for the rest of my life, and I have to face up to that grim reality. Christopher is an ardent supporter who is deeply concerned for my safety.”

However, both the Conservative and Labour parties have attempted to claim that Mr Farage may have broken parliamentary ethical codes by failing to declare the gift, the BBC reported.

The leak of financial information comes just days before critical local elections across the United Kingdom, in which Farage’s Reform UK party is tipped to make major gains as the two establishment parties continue to fade in popularity among voters.

Mr Farage predicted this week that Reform will deliver a “crushing” defeat for Labour in its industrial heartlands which will ultimately force Prime Minister Starmer to resign from his post.

IDF chief says there is ‘no ceasefire’ in south Lebanon as fight against Hezbollah continues

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir says there “is no ceasefire” in southern Lebanon as troops continue to operate against the threat of Hezbollah.

He also says that the IDF “will not tolerate” Hezbollah’s attacks, while adding that Israel will not leave its new security zone until the threat to Israel’s northern communities is removed.

“In Lebanon, the mission assigned to us by the political echelon is to position ourselves along the line to prevent direct fire on the communities. We have achieved this; this is the line we are on. We may be required to remain on it,” Zamir says during a visit this morning to the southern Lebanon town of Taybeh, where troops are deployed.

“We will not tolerate attacks and fire on our communities, and we will not leave until long-term security for the northern communities is ensured,” he says, according to remarks published by the IDF.

Zamir says the IDF is continuing to fight: “We continue fighting and are working to deepen the operational achievements and to protect our forces.”

“On the combat front, there is no ceasefire; you continue to fight, to remove direct and indirect threats from the northern communities, to thwart terror infrastructure, to locate and kill terrorists,” he continues.

“Any threat, anywhere, to our communities or our forces, including beyond the Yellow Line and north of the Litani [River], will be removed. Your mission and duty are to act with freedom of action and remove any threat,” Zamir says.

An unusually divided Federal Reserve on Wednesday held its key interest rate steady as policymakers grappled with the policy impact of persistent inflation and awaited a looming leadership transition at the central bank.

In what may have been Chair Jerome Powell’s final meeting at the helm, the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee voted to hold the benchmark funds rate in a range between 3.5%-3.75%. Markets had been pricing in a 100% chance of no change.

However, the meeting saw a dramatic turn amid a groundswell of officials who opposed messaging that further rate cuts could be ahead.

Amid expectations for a routine vote to hold the benchmark funds rate steady, the Federal Open Market Committee instead was split along 8-4 lines, with officials expressing different reasons for their vote.

The last time four FOMC members dissented was in October 1992.

Governor Stephen Miran, as he has done since joining the central bank in September 2025, dissented in favor of a quarter percentage point cut.

The other three “no” votes came from regional presidents Beth Hammack of Cleveland, Neel Kashkari of Minneapolis and Lorie Logan of Dallas. They said they agreed with the hold but “did not support the inclusion of an easing bias in the statement at this time.”

At issue for the trio was this sentence: “In considering the extent and timing of additional adjustments to the target range for the federal funds rate, the Committee will carefully assess incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks.”

The phrasing indicates the likelihood that the next move would be lower, implied by using the word “additional,” which reflects that the most recent rate actions have been to cut. Hammack, Kashkari and Logan, along with several other Fed officials, have warned about the dangers of persistent inflation. Higher prices augur higher rates for the Fed, which has been on an easing bias since the latter part of 2025.

‘Inflation is elevated’

In the post-meeting statement, the committee noted that, “Inflation is elevated, in part reflecting the recent increase in global energy prices.”

Markets had been widely expecting the hold and in fact are pricing in no changes the rest of this year and well into 2027. Fed officials at the March meetingindicated they foresee one cut this year then another in 2027, putting the funds rate down to its expected “neutral” level around 3.1%.

Stocks were lower on Wednesday, as oil prices shot higher and investors waited high-profile earnings from four of the “Magnificent Seven.”

The Fed’s decision marked the third consecutive meeting where the committee chose to stand pat – following three consecutive cuts last year.

For most of his eight years as chair, Powell has been able to maintain strong consensus among the committee even as the Fed has struggled to contain inflation and resist aggressive White House political pressure.

Policymakers, though, face an economic climate where inflation indeed has held well above the Fed’s 2% target, as President Donald Trump’s tariffs and soaring energy prices are complicating policy. Normally, Fed officials would look through the temporary price shocks from both factors, but the duration of the surges has raised concern about the longer-lasting consumer impact.

On the other side of the Fed’s so-called dual mandate, concerns have abated over the low-hire low-fire labor market.

Nonfarm payrolls in March grew by a better-than-expected 178,000, while the unemployment rate slipped to 4.3%. For April, payrolls processing firm ADP has reported average weekly private payroll growth around 40,000, further indicating that the jobs picture is healthy if less than robust.

With the rate decision behind it, attention will quickly turn to Powell’s post-meeting news conference. Earlier in the day, the Senate Banking Committee in a party-line vote advanced President Donald Trump’s nomination of Kevin Warsh as the next Fed chair. The full Senate is widely expected to follow suit, setting up the Fed’s first leadership change since Powell took over in 2018.

Powell’s choice

Powell faces a choice – leave now as Warsh comes on board, or serve out all or part of the remaining two years on his term as governor. Should Powell opt to stay, it would mark thefirst time a sitting chair didn’t leave the Boardof Governors since Marriner Eccles in 1948.

Powell and Eccles faced similar challenges in the form of White House pressure on monetary policy. In Eccles’ case, President Harry S. Truman pushed the Fed to keep rates low to help reduce government borrowing costs. Trump has pressured the Fed to help the housing and labor markets, and to help reduce the financing burden of the nation’s nearly $39 trillion national debt.

In the Eccles era, the clash led to the 1951 Treasury-Fed Accord, which helped formalize the Fed’s independence by creating a clear barrier between the two institutions.

Warsh has spoken of reopening the accordand modernizing it for the current era where the central bank’s fixed income holdings total some $6.7 trillion. The chair-elect has advocated strengthening the relationship with better coordination on debt issuance while furthering Warsh’s goal of lessening the Fed’s imprint in the bond market.

Powell has spoken strongly about Fed independence. A Justice Department effort to subpoena him over the Fed building renovation project has failed thus far, and a criminal probe into the matter has been dropped.

Among his reasons to stay would be to wait until the renovations probe – which U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro handed off to the Fed’s inspector general – is finished. Also, there are ongoing issues regarding independence that Powell could resist as a governor, among them the potential replacement of regional Fed presidents.

Russia Scales Back Victory Day Parade, Citing Ukrainian Drone Attacks

Russia's Defense Ministry said the Victory Day parade on Red Square an annual Kremlin spectacle celebrating the Soviet role in World War II and Moscow's military today will be drastically scaled back this year, with no military vehicles or heavy weaponry on display for the first time in almost two decades.

A day after the ministry confirmed late on April 28 persistent rumors that this year's May 9 parade would be much more low-key, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman suggested the main reason was Ukrainian "terrorist activity," clearly a reference to drone attacks Kyiv has launched as it battles against Russia's full-scale invasion.

"Against the backdrop of this terrorist threat, of course all measures to minimize danger are being taken," spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The Defense Ministry statement said the parade would include soldiers and other personnel marching.

But no cadets from Russia's most prestigious military academies would be participating, it said, and no "column of military equipment" – a reference to a display that in past years frequently featured tanks, armored vehicles, ICBMs, and more.

The annual event held just outside the Kremlin's walls has traditionally served as a celebration of Russia's history marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, with veterans given prominent places of honor.

The last time there were no military vehicles all on parade was 2007, during Dmitry Medvedev's presidency. In 2023, the parade was also lower-key with just a few dozen vehicles, featuring missile launchers and armored infantry vehicles, and a column headed by a single World War II-era tank.

Over Putin's quarter-century in power, however, the Kremlin has also used the parade to showcase military hardware with hundreds of tanks, vehicles, aircraft, and missile launchers as a demonstration to the outside world.

Since the 2022 all-out invasion of Ukraine, the parade has also been reminder of the Russian war effort there, with little mention of the extraordinary casualties Russia has suffered.

Over the past year, Ukraine has stepped up its drone campaign, targeting Russian energy infrastructure, air force bases, and other targets. Moscow has scrambled to keep up in shooting down the drones.

Before Peskov spoke, some observers had speculated the move to scale dopwn the parade was prompted by fears of a Ukrainian drone attack. In 2023, Ukraine flew a drone into a building inside the Kremlin compound, surprising military commanders.

"Ukraine's ability to strike deep into Russian territory has indeed grown in recent years," said Kirill Martynov, the editor in chief of Novaya Gazeta Europe, speaking before the Defense Ministry announcement.

"And generally speaking, a breach of air defense during this parade, with all the distinguished guests present, is absolutely a very real threat."

He also noted that Russian society is increasingly tired of the war, as well as the Kremlin's handling of the economy, which is increasingly under strain, and the draconian shutdowns of the Internet, which authorities have said are aimedat reducing the threat of Ukrainain drone attacks.

"No one understands when the war will end or under what circumstances. More and more people, even among those who supported the war, are feeling some disappointment about it," he told Current Time.

Jerome Powell says he will continue to serve as a Fed governor even after chairmanship ends

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Wednesday said he will stay on the Board of Governors for an indefinite period while a probe into the renovation of the central bank’s headquarters continues.

“I’ve said that I will not leave the board until this investigation is well and truly over with transparency and finality, and I stand by that. I’m encouraged by recent developments, and I’m watching the remaining steps in this process carefully,” Powell said near the beginning of his post-meeting news conference.

“My decisions on these matters will continue to be guided entirely by what I believe is in the best interest of the institution and the people we serve after my term as chair ends on May 15, and will continue to serve as a governor for a period of time to be determined,” he added.

The statement resolves for the moment a key question that hovered over the Federal Open Market Committee meeting.

Markets already had largely expected to keep its key interest rate steady, with the bigger question over Powell’s future. Powell’s tenure as chair ends next month, but he has two years remaining on his seat as governor.

The chair, who has served eight years, congratulated his appointed successor Kevin Warsh, whose nominee cleared a pivotal hurdle earlier Wednesday when the Senate Banking Committee voted to move Warsh forward to the full floor for a vote.

“I plan to keep a low profile as a governor,” Powell said. “There’s only ever one chair … When Kevin Marsh is confirmed and sworn in, he will be that chair.”

Beyond Warsh, Powell addressed the intense criticism he has faced from President Donald Trump, who appointed Powell to the job during his first term in office.

Powell called the criticism “unprecedented in our 113-year history” and said he worries about the impact on the institution.

“I worry that these attacks are battering the institution and putting at risk the thing that really matters to the public, which is the ability to conduct monetary policies without taking into consideration political factors,” he said. “It is so important for our economy, for the people that we serve, that they can depend, over time, on a central bank that operates that way, free of political influence.”

Coordinated Takedown of Scam Centers Leads to at Least 276 Arrests; Alleged Managers and Recruiters Charged in San Diego

SAN DIEGO – Unprecedented cooperation between the FBI, Dubai Police Department, and Chinese Ministry of Public Security has resulted in the arrest of at least 276 individuals and the dismantlement of at least nine scam centers used for cryptocurrency investment fraud schemes. These centers targeted Americans who have suffered millions of dollars in losses from such schemes.

This international crackdown last week was spearheaded by the Dubai Police, under the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Interior. Among the 275 arrested by Dubai authorities were three defendants charged in the Southern District of California with federal wire fraud and money laundering charges. An additional person was arrested by the Royal Thai Police.

Thet Min Nyi (27, a Burmese national), Wiliang Awang (23, an Indonesian national), Andreas Chandra (29, an Indonesia national), Lisa Mariam (29, an Indonesian national), and two fugitive co-conspirators have been charged with federal fraud and money laundering charges unsealed in San Diego today. Dubai Police apprehended Thet Min Nyi, Chandra, and Mariam, while the Royal Thai Police apprehended Awang.

“These scammers thought they were safe half a world away. But their world has changed. Global crime now faces global justice,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon for the Southern District of California.

“Fraudsters who target Americans from overseas cannot operate with impunity, no matter where in the world they reside,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “The charges and arrests announced today reflect an international consensus that scam centers are unwelcome everywhere and must be rooted out. Scam center organizers and fraudsters who defraud Americans and others will face justice in American courts and in courts around the world. Former Executive Director of East Carroll Parish Housing Authority Indicted for Federal Program Theft and Money Laundering

LAFAYETTE– On April 15, 2026, a federal grand jury in Lafayette returned a four-count indictment charging Kelsi J. McDaniel, a 29-year-old Lake Providence resident, with one count of embezzling from the East Carroll Parish Housing Authority (“ECPHA”) and three counts of concealment money laundering relating to that embezzlement. McDaniel faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison for the federal program theft charge, up to 20 years in federal prison for the money laundering charges, and three years of supervised release for each count.

On April 7, the Department of Justice announced the creation of the National Fraud Enforcement Division. The core mission of the Fraud Division is to zealously investigate and prosecute those who steal or fraudulently misuse taxpayer dollars. Department of Justice efforts to combat fraud support President Trump’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, a whole-of-government effort chaired by Vice President J.D. Vance to eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse within Federal benefit programs.

“Agencies like ECPHA serve some of the most vulnerable members of our Louisiana communities, and frauds like the one allegedly perpetrated by Ms. McDaniel strike at the heart of those agencies’ ability to do their work,” said United States Attorney Zachary A. Keller. “Our Office and federal partners look forward to seeing justice done in this case.”

“Kelsi McDaniel’s alleged actions exploited her position and violated the public trust by stealing federal funds that were intended to help provide housing for the most vulnerable people in our community,” said Special Agent in Charge Jerome Winkle with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Office of Inspector General (OIG). “HUD OIG will continue to work with its law enforcement partners to diligently pursue and hold accountable individuals who take advantage of their positions of trust to defraud HUD programs.”

According to court documents, McDaniel served as the Executive Director of ECPHA, a Louisiana state agency that received funding from HUD. In that role, McDaniel was the authorized signatory for ECPHA’s Bank 1 account, with that account receiving HUD funds to promote HUD’s housing support mission. To execute her scheme, McDaniel would transfer ECPHA funds from its Bank 1 account into her personal Bank 1 account and then transfer the funds from that account to CashApps belonging to others, who would then transfer the money back to her.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated this case. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Cheyenne Wilson with assistance from Legal Assistant Amanda Morgan.

Atlanta Hawks' Former Senior Vice President of Finance Sentenced to Federal Prison for Embezzlement

ATLANTA – A former Atlanta Hawks accounting executive, Lester T. Jones, Jr., has been sentenced to three years and five months in prison for embezzling approximately $3.7 million from the NBA team through fraudulent expense reimbursement requests and misuse of corporate credit cards.

“Jones turned his dream job as a high-ranking executive for the Atlanta Hawks into an opportunity to steal the team’s funds, purchasing luxury apparel, jewelry, watches, and trips for himself,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “But, for Jones and others who abuse their employers’ trust to embezzle substantial funds, the gravy train’s final destination is federal prison.”

“This case underscores the significant damage that can be caused by insider threats within an organization,” said Marlo Graham, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta. “Jones abused his authority and access to embezzle millions, but schemes like this are not immune from detection. The FBI remains committed to investigating and disrupting financial crimes at every level.”

According to U.S. Attorney Hertzberg, the charges, and other information presented in court: Jones joined the Accounting and Finance Department of ATL Hawks, LLC (“the Hawks”) in 2016. Following his promotion to Senior Vice President of Finance in August 2021, Jones became the most senior accounting executive for the Hawks after the Chief Financial Officer.

Beginning in early 2021, Jones became the sole administrator of the Hawks’ corporate credit card account with American Express. In this role, Jones supervised the Hawks’ corporate American Express credit card program; served as American Express’s sole contact with the Hawks in the event of payment issues, delays, and card suspensions; and determined when and to which employees corporate credit cards should be issued. Jones was the only Hawks employee with full visibility into the number of corporate credit cards, the identities of the cardholders, account balances, and other program details. Jones also began serving as administrator of the Hawks’ electronic reimbursement platform, supervising employees who handled expense reimbursements.

From a date unknown and continuing through in or about June 2025, Jones used his position to defraud the Hawks out of approximately $3.7 million dollars. Jones accomplished his scheme in two ways: (1) by submitting or directing the submission of dozens of fraudulent expense reimbursement requests to cause the Hawks to reimburse him for fictitious business expenses; and (2) by charging personal expenses to corporate credit cards and covering it up through false representations to other Hawks employees, including to his subordinates in the Accounting and Finance Department. Those personal expenses included approximately $80,000 in overseas travel to the Bahamas and Thailand, $99,800 in apparel at Saks Fifth Avenue, a $115,795.01 diamond ring, $21,888.90 in Omega watches, and over $160,000 in tickets to concerts and other events.

CARTIER was sentenced today before U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil. On October 23, 2025, CARTIER pled guilty to one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

Stopping money laundering stops crime more broadly. This federal prison sentence sends a clear message that those who launder criminal proceeds will face serious consequences.”

Since at least 2018 through the date of the defendant’s arrest, CARTIER, a descendant of the Cartier family known for luxury jewelry, ran an unlicensed money transmitting business that operated an over-the-counter (“OTC”) cryptocurrency exchange to buy and sell cryptocurrency on behalf of his clients. This operation played a key role in a sophisticated international money laundering network that exploited the U.S. financial system to launder hundreds of millions of dollars in criminal proceeds through the United States to Colombia, among other countries.

CARTIER’s OTC cryptocurrency exchange consisted of a large network of U.S.-based shell companies that CARTIER operated and controlled for the sole purpose of converting cryptocurrency into hard currency. CARTIER opened more than a dozen accounts at U.S. banks, lying to the banks about the nature of his businesses and the purposes of the bank accounts. CARTIER fraudulently claimed the businesses operated in the software publishing and software development industries, when in fact they existed for the sole purpose of receiving and transmitting drug money and other crime proceeds. CARTIER used forged contracts, invoices, and other business records to make it appear to banks that the funds related to legitimate business rather than crime. CARTIER received drug money in the form of cryptocurrency, converted that cryptocurrency into hard currency, deposited it into shell company accounts that CARTIER opened and controlled, and then transmitted the funds to other nodes in the money-laundering network to further conceal their nature and origin before the funds were ultimately withdrawn in local currency in Colombia. CARTIER knew that he was operating a money services business for criminals but did not register as a money transmitting business or follow the anti-money laundering protocols required by law. In total, CARTIER personally helped launder more than $470 million through his shell companies.

Alabama School District Employee Pleads Guilty to Attempted Sex Trafficking of a Minor in Pensacola

Pensacola, Florida – Christopher W. Glover, 47, of Simms, Alabama, pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of Attempted Sex Trafficking of a Minor, and one count of Traveling in Interstate Commerce to Engage in Illicit Sexual Conduct. The plea was announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

U.S. Attorney Heekin said: “This case is a reminder that parents need to be aware of the online threats facing our kids from sexual predators, like this defendant, who seek to sexually exploit and victimize children. Court documents and pretrial hearings in federal court in Pensacola reveal that the defendant communicated online with who he believed to be a 14-year-old female, and offered to pay her hundreds of dollars in return for sexual acts in October 2025. The defendant then traveled from Alabama, where he worked for the Baldwin County School District, to Pensacola to meet with the minor. The purported minor, however, was an undercover law enforcement officer. When the defendant reached Pensacola to engage in sexual acts with the minor, he was taken into custody. He possessed over $200 in cash intended to pay for the illicit sexual acts.

Glover faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years’ imprisonment, and up to life imprisonment. Glover will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Former Sun Prairie High School Dean of Students Sentenced to 18 Years for Producing Child Pornography

MADISON, WIS. – Chadwick M. Elgersma, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Robert Gilkey-Meisegeier, 31, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to 18 years in federal prison for producing child pornography. The prison term will be followed by 25 years of supervised release. Gilkey-Meisegeier was also ordered to pay a $10,000 assessment. He pleaded guilty to this crime on February 6, 2026.

“Make no mistake, Gilkey-Meisegeier is a predator,” said U.S. Attorney Elgersma. “He used his position as the Dean of Students to target, groom, and exploit students in his care. I commend the courage of the victims and the diligence of investigators who worked tirelessly to hold Gilkey-Meisegeier responsible for his crimes. Today’s sentence sends a clear message – anyone who sexually exploits children will face serious consequences.”

Gilkey-Meisegeier originally joined the Sun Prairie School District in July 2022 as a youth advocate. Two years later, in August 2024, the school district promoted him to Dean of Students, a position that he held until the district terminated him on June 9, 2025.

In the spring of 2023, two individuals complained to school district personnel about Gilkey-Meisegeier’s concerning behavior towards certain students. In April 2025, a third individual submitted an anonymous tip to district personnel alleging that Gilkey-Meisegeier was having an inappropriate relationship with a student. He denied the allegation.

U.S. Supreme Court Voids Race-Based Redistricting Map in Louisiana

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down a race-based redistricting map in Louisiana,ruling that the state’s second black-majority district violates the Constitution.

The conservative majority ruled 6-3 that the ==map “is an unconstitutional gerrymander•=,” but stopped short of scrapping Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

“Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was designed to enforce the Constitution — not collide with it. Unfortunately, lower courts have sometimes applied this Court’s §2 precedents in a way that forces States to engage in the very race-based discrimination that the Constitution forbids,” Justice Alito wrote for the majority.

“This tension between §2 and the Constitution came to a head when Louisiana redrew its congressional districts after the 2020 census. In 2022, a federal judge in the Middle District of Louisiana held that the map adopted by the state legislature likely violated §2 because it did not include an additional majority-black district,” he continued.“But when the State drew a new map that contained such a district, its new map was challenged as a racial gerrymander. A three-judge court in the Western District of Louisiana held that the new map violated the Equal Protection Clause, and the State appealed to this Court.”

The Supreme Court heard arguments in Louisiana v. Callais on October 15. The court heard arguments in the last term in Junebut agreed to hear another round and ultimately considered whether race or politics was the state’s motivation and whether compliance with the Voting Rights Act justifies the intentional use of race in drawing legislative districts.

“For over 30 years, we have assumed for the sake of argument that the answer is yes. And we have gone further and assumed that it is enough if a State ‘ha[s] a strong basis in evidence’ for thinking that the Voting Rights Act requires race-based conduct,” Alito wrote. “But allowing race to play any part in government decision-making represents a departure from the constitutional rule that applies in almost every other context. These and other problems convinced us that the time had come to resolve whether compliance with the Voting Rights Act can indeed provide a compelling reason for race-based districting.”

“We now answer that question: Compliance with §2, as properly construed, can provide such a reason. Correctly understood, §2does not impose liability at odds with the Constitution, and it should not have imposed liability on Louisiana for its 2022 map” he wrote. “Compliance with §2 thus could not justify the State’s use of race-based redistricting here. The State’s attempt tosatisfy the Middle District’s ruling, although understandable, was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, and we therefore affirm the decision below.”

Justice Elena Kagan wrote a dissent for the three liberal-leaning justices, calling the consequences of the decision “likely to be far-reaching and grave.”

“Today’s decision renders Section 2 all but a dead letter,” Kagan wrote.

The case could massively impact midterm elections and the 2028 elections. Analyses by the New York Times and a left-wing group called Fair Fight Action found that between 12 and 19 Democratic congressional districts could be redrawn into GOP ones.

The case is Louisiana v. Callais, No. 24–109 in the Supreme Court of the United States.

How UK Media Shields the Israel Lobby

Leading U.K. media don’t mention the Israel Lobby because they’re part of it, writes Mark Curtis. But its influence over U.K. politics is likely to be greater than any other state, except perhaps the U.S.

Britain’s national media fails to recognise the influence – and even the existence – of an Israel lobby, our new media analysis shows.

Declassified researched two years of reporting by seven British media outlets and found only 16 mentions of the phrase Israel lobby without speech marks.

Nearly all those mentions are in comment articles rather than news pieces and none we found expound on what influence such an Israel lobby might have.

The phrase “Israel lobby” – used with speech marks – is slightly more common in these outlets, with 26 mentions in two years, and tends to be used to quote others in a disparaging way or to suggest such a lobby does not exist.

For example, one Guardian article refers to “the trope of the ‘Israel lobby’.” The Daily Mail reported in May 2024 of hecklers at a speech by then foreign secretary secretary David Lammy “accusing the MP of having taken ‘shady money’ from the ‘pro-Israel lobby’ on the grounds that he once lawfully accepted £30,000 from a Zionist lobbyist named Trevor Chinn.”

In fact, British businessman Trevor Chinn has funded Keir Starmer and several senior Labour ministers and was awarded the Israeli medal of honour for his “dedication” to and “love” for Israel.

Of seven media outlets analysed — BBC, Express, Guardian, Independent, Mail, Telegraph and Times — the BBC and the Express are the most extreme. No mentions of the phrase Israel lobby, used without speech marks, could be found at all in their publications.

The BBC is failing to mention the Israel lobby while having regular meetings with it. As Declassified recently revealed, the BBC held nine meetings with Jewish groups strongly sympathetic to Israel in the first year of the Gaza genocide.

The Guardian was found to have made only five mentions of an Israel lobby without speech marks, three of which are in comment pieces by columnist Owen Jones.

By contrast, independent Scottish newspaper The National, which has consistently criticised U.K. policy towards Israel, has mentioned the Israel lobby twenty-three times in the two-year sample period, never in speech marks.

Israel Lobby

The Israel lobby in Britain is extensive. Declassified has revealed that a quarter of MPs have been funded by pro-Israel individuals and groups, as have one half of Keir Starmer’s Cabinet.

Neither of these findings have been reported in the mainstream media, as far as Declassified is aware.

British ministers and officials are known to hold off-the-books meetings with pro-Israel lobbyists, and under Starmer’s government, the Foreign Office has held numerous meetings with pro-Israel advocacy groups such as Board of Deputies of British Jews and the European Leadership Network (ELNET).

The U.K. government’s total proscription of the Lebanese movement Hezbollah in 2019 was the work of pro-Israel lobbyists while the lobby group, We Believe in Israel, has taken credit for the U.K. government’s proscription of Palestine Action last year.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a report that an airliner collided with an apparent toy drone Wednesday — sustaining no damage — while on approach to San Diego International Airport.

The pilot of the United Airlines Boeing 737 reported morning that the plane hit a drone at about 3,000 feet near the airport, according to a radio transmission posted on ATC.com.

“It was red,” the pilot told a flight controller. “It was shiny.”

The crew of the airliner, which was completing Flight 1980 out of San Francisco, went on to safely land in San Diego at about 8:30 a.m., according to United Airlines.

A subsequent inspection of the aircraft revealed no damage, the airline asserted in a prepared statement.

The FAA “is aware of the report and is investigating,” agency spokesperson Cassandra Nolan said.

If the aircraft did strike a drone, its operator was flying it in violation of regulations.

“Pilots cannot operate drones above 400 feet altitude unless they have specific FAA authorization,” Nolan noted. “Drone pilots also must avoid restricted airspace, including the airspace around airports.”

The high-altitude ISR drone, using callsign MAGMA10, was tracked flying from Sigonella toward the western Black Sea before the emergency code appeared during the mission.

The aircraft involved is one of NATO’s Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) drones based at Sigonella Air Base in Sicily, a platform that has become increasingly central to the Alliance’s intelligence collection activities along NATO’s eastern flank since the start of the war in Ukraine.

While a 7600 squawk does not necessarily indicate a major onboard emergency, it is a significant event for an aircraft operating in one of Europe’s most sensitive airspaces.

Today’s communication issue appears to have occurred while the aircraft was already established over the western Black Sea operating area.

Despite the squawk, the drone continued its route, suggesting that contingency procedures remained functional. The episode also highlights the growing dependence on unmanned ISR platforms for NATO situational awareness near contested regions.

Any technical issue involving these aircraft inevitably attracts attention because of their strategic role and the politically sensitive environment in which they operate.

Rogan repeatedly attacked Australia's Covid response during the pandemic, accusing the government of imposing heavy-handed restrictions.

'There's some crazy shit going on right now where the army is trying to keep people inside in Australia,' he said in 2021.

'They have full on government lockdowns where the government is flying helicopters over streets saying "go back indoors, you're not allowed outside".

'Which is crazy - this disease does not even transmit well outside. Being outside and getting vitamin D is probably one of the best things you can do.'

A Louisiana woman says she recently stumbled upon a sizeable bipedal creature lurking on her property, and the encounter seemingly sent the mysterious interloper, thought to be Sasquatch, running.

The witness, who opted to remain anonymous, recounted the remarkable moment in a report to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization. According to the woman, the possible Sasquatch sighting occurred on the evening of Tuesday, April 14th, near the community of Westlake.

While walking along a trail to retrieve a hay bale she had inadvertently dropped from a bulkhead on her property, the woman turned a corner and "saw a very large dark thing standing upright."

It would appear that she startled the mysterious figure as it immediately "took off, crashing through vines and palmettos." The witness observed that the interloper "turned north west and crossed through waist-deep water."

Although it was difficult to see the creature as it made its escape, the woman stressed that it moved in a fashion that left her no doubt that it was moving on two feet.

"I have lived back here many years," she mused, "and know the difference between deer and hogs moving in the water," suggesting that what appeared on her property earlier this month was not one of those prosaic animals.

Adding one last bit of weirdness to the incident, the woman noted that her pets, as well as those of her neighbors, were all "behaving differently" in the days leading up to the sighting, with "outside cats trying to get inside" and dogs seemingly sensing an unknown presence on the property.

Trump addresses UFO files, teases ‘near future’ release

President Donald Trump says the government’s files on UFOs could be released sometime soon, and his administration will release as many as it can.

“I think some of it is going to be very interesting,” Trump said during an Oval Office gathering Wednesday.

At the same event, Trump welcomed the four astronauts of NASA’s Artemis II mission at the White House three weeks after they returned from the moon.

“We have some people that have captivated the attention of the whole world. They’re very brave, and there’s a lot of rocket under them,” Trump said.

“We’re very proud of these people, and they have unbelievable courage.”

NASA names next astronauts to travel to International Space Station

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman told reporters the next Artemis mission, Artemis III, is slated for sometime in 2027.

The four astronauts — Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, Victor Glover and Jeremy Hansen — splashed back down to Earth on April 10 after a 10-day historic lunar flyby.

During the trip, the astronauts got to do what had never been done before: see the far side of the moon.

Isaacman also addressed the question of moving NASA’s headquarters away from Washington, D.C., saying the agency is looking to stay in D.C. to keep a central hub for communicating with all the NASA bases across the country.

Wednesday’s meeting was not the first time the Artemis II astronauts spoke with the president. Just after they flew past the moon, Trump called them and congratulated them on completing the mission. It was this phone call where he invited them to the White House.

“Today, you’ve made history and made all America really proud, incredibly proud. We have a lot of things to be proud of lately, but this is, there’s nothing like what you’re doing,” Trump said.
