  1. Stabilize the fresh ground

The ground that was left exposed after demolition was soft and very wet. To stabilize the new pool bottom that would be poured in, Corman had to install timber piles, each about 50 feet long. The pool is about 2,000 feet long and 160 feet wide, so the company had to bring in close to 5,000 timber piles from Atlantic Wood Industries to cover the entire area. Piles were driven down about 50 feet to bedrock, where they could support the fresh concrete.

 

  1. Pour the concrete

Before pouring the new layer of concrete, Corman had to pour small-grade beams into the space. “They’re like caps over the piles, on top of which we pour a new slab,” Mulcahy says. It took Corman about four months to pour 15,000 yards of eight-inch-deep concrete in 160-by-60-foot patches. “It was done mostly in the winter time,” Richardson says, “so it was about just getting through a long process.” The concrete also had to be a custom dark-gray color, meaning every pour had to be properly colored and cured to be uniform. “So you don’t have a checkerboard effect,” Richardson explains.

 

  1. Restore the pool’s border

The granite stones that border the reflecting pool presented a unique challenge in that each one had to be individually restored to maintain the pool’s historic aesthetic. The slabs were the same ones that had been installed in 1920, and while granite is resilient, the stones were starting to show their wear. Corman subcontracted Lorton Stone, LLC to do the restoration work on the border slabs, and Lorton also did the granite work on the Lincoln Memorial Plaza. “They did the majority of all our final cosmetic stonework,” Mulcahy says.

 

  1. Install new piping

As work on the pool progressed, Corman had to tackle the enormous tasks of installing new piping and building a water-treatment building about 200 yards away from the pool. The firm installed 8,000 linear feet of HDPE piping, which is a specially fused pipe made out of plastic-like material, to pump water to and from the new pool. “The biggest challenge with that was the measurements,” Mulcahy says. “The way you install the pipes is really critical because each one has to come up a certain length and fit into a puzzle. … A lot of planning went into that ahead of time, as far as laying the pipes out and knowing where everything needed to be.”

 

  1. Pave the walkways

Before the project began, pedestrians had worn a dirt path into the grass surrounding the reflecting pool. As part of the rehab, the National Park Service wanted to build a new walkway around the pool for pedestrians. Corman installed a 15-foot-wide walkway on either side of the pool with an exposed aggregate concrete finish, which involves pouring concrete retarder on top of the concrete and washing it away to leave the mixture’s stones exposed. This technique, undertaken by subcontractor Metro Paving Corporation, was tricky, Richardson says

NGC 188: Old Cluster in the New General Catalog

 

The New General Catalog of star clusters and nebulae really isn't so new. In fact, it was published in 1888 - an effort by J. L. E. Dreyer to consolidate the work of astronomers William, Caroline, and John Herschel along with others into a useful single, complete catalog of astronomical discoveries and measurements. Dreyer's work was largely successful and is still important today, as this famous catalog continues to lend its "NGC" to bright clusters, galaxies, and nebulae. Take for example the star cluster known as NGC 188 (item number 188 in the NGC compilation). It lies about 6,000 light-years distant in the northern constellation Cepheus and represents a galactic or open star cluster. With an age of about 7 billion years, NGC 188 is old for an open cluster. Its old, evolved red giant stars have yellowish hues in this colorful, deep sky view. NGC 188 also enjoys the designation Caldwell 1 in a modern compilation of deep sky objects. Located well above the plane of the Milky Way and seen in the direction of planet Earth's north celestial pole, the ancient stellar group is known to some as the Polarissima Cluster.

LOS ANGELES – The mayor of Arcadia has been charged in federal court with acting as an illegal agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the Justice Department announced today.

 

Eileen Wang, 58, of Arcadia, is charged via information with one count of acting in the United States as an illegal agent of a foreign government.

 

In a related filing, Wang has agreed to plead guilty to the felony count, which comes with a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.

 

She is expected to make her initial appearance this afternoon in United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles. Wang is expected to plead guilty in the coming weeks.

 

Wang was elected in November 2022 to the Arcadia City Council, a five-person governing body from which the mayor is selected on a rotating basis.

 

“Individuals in our country who covertly do the bidding of foreign governments undermine our democracy,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli. “This plea agreement is the latest success in our determination to defend the homeland against China’s efforts to corrupt our institutions.”

 

“Individuals elected to public office in the United States should act only for the people of the United States that they represent,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg. “It is deeply concerning that someone who previously received and executed directives from PRC government officials is now in a position of public trust at all, but particularly so because that relationship with that foreign government had never been disclosed.”

 

“By her own admission, Eileen Wang secretly served the interests of the Chinese government,” said Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky of the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division. “Let this serve as a clear warning: Individuals who act on behalf of foreign governments to influence our democracy will be identified, investigated, and brought to justice. Protecting the rule of law and the transparency of our democratic process remains at the core of the FBI’s mission, and we will continue working alongside our partners to safeguard the integrity of our elections and keep hostile actors from undermining the voices of the American people.”

 

"All Americans should be alarmed to learn an elected official was brazenly spreading propaganda on behalf of the Chinese government," said Patrick Grandy, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office. "The FBI is dedicated to rooting out those illegally acting as agents of a foreign government as they do the bidding of America’s adversaries."

 

According to her plea agreement, from late 2020 through 2022, Wang and Yaoning “Mike” Sun, 65, of Chino Hills, worked at the direction and control of PRC government officials and coordinated with U.S.-based individuals to promote the PRC’s interestsby, among other things, promoting pro-PRC propaganda in the United States. Sun is serving a four-year federal prison sentence after he pleaded guilty in October 2025 to acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government.

Wang and Sun worked together to operate U.S. News Center, a website that purported to be a news source for the local Chinese American community. Wang and Sun received and executed directives from PRC government officials to post pro-PRC content on the website.

 

For example, in June 2021, a PRC official contacted Wang and other individuals via the WeChat encrypted messaging application with pre-written news articles,including a PRC official-written essay in the Los Angeles Times that stated: “China’s Stance on the Xinjiang Issue – There is no genocide in Xinjiang; there is no such thing as ‘forced labor’ in any production activity, including cotton production. Spreading such rumor to do defame China, destroy Xinjiang’s safety and stability, weaken local economy, suppress China’s development[.]”

 

Minutes later, Wang posted the article on her own website and responded to the PRC official with a link to the article on her website. The others in the group chat did the same. The PRC official responded: “So fast, thank you everyone.”

 

In August 2021, Wang and three other members of the same group chat shared links to the same article on their respective “news” websites, after which the PRC official thanked them for their “reporting.” At the PRC official’s request, Wang made edits to the article, sent the official a link to the article reflecting the requested change, then sent the official a screenshot showing the article had been viewed 15,128 times. In response, the official messaged, “Great!,” Wang replied, “Thank you leader.”

 

In November 2021, Wang communicated with John Chen, a high-level member of the PRC intelligence apparatus, who regularly attended elite Chinese Communist Party functions, including military parades, and met personally with PRC President Xi Jinping, according to court documents. Wang asked Chen to post a “news” article from her website, and wrote, “This is what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to send.”

 

Chen was sentenced in November 2024 to 20 months in federal prison after pleading guilty in the Southern District of New York to acting as an illegal agent of the PRC and conspiracy to bribe a public official.

 

Wang admitted in her plea agreement that she did not notify the Attorney General that she was acting in the United States as an agent of the PRC, that she was located in the United States when she engaged in these acts, and that did she not disclose on her website that some of its content had been posted at the direction of members of the PRC government.

 

The FBI is investigating this matter.

 

Assistant United States Attorney Amanda B. Elbogen of the National Security Division is prosecuting this case, with assistance from Trial Attorney Garrett Coyle of the Counterintelligence and Export Control Section in the Department of Justice’s National Security Division.

Gary Klausner for the Central District of California to 48 months in federal prison for acting as an illegal agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), including while serving as the campaign advisor for a political candidate who was elected to the city council of a Southern California city.Sun pleaded guilty in October 2025 to one count of acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government.

 

“For years, Sun received and executed taskings from Chinese government officials, distorted our public discourse by disseminating Chinese propaganda, and surveilled groups in the United States that China viewed as threatening its interests as part of a campaign of intimidation,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg. “His conduct represents a brazen violation of our national sovereignty. This sentence reflects our commitment to prosecuting those who would extend the authoritarian reach of the Chinese government on U.S. soil."

 

“When Americans vote for elected officials, they expect them to represent the interests of their constituents – not those of a foreign adversary like the Chinese government,” said Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky of the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division. “By exploiting his position as a campaign advisor, Yaoning Sun attempted to undermine our political processes and democratic institutions for the benefit of the Chinese Communist Party. This sentencing underscores the unwavering commitment of the FBI and our partners to defending the homeland and holding accountable anyone who tries to subvert the will of American voters at the behest of our adversaries.”

 

“Federal law enforcement will not allow hostile foreign nations to infiltrate the governance of our nation’s political bodies,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli for the Central District of California. “The relentlessness of PRC intelligence operations in our country must be met by equal relentlessness on our part to secure, protect, and defend the United States.”

 

According to court documents, from at least 2022 to January 2024, Sun knowingly acted within the United States as an agent of the PRC and officials of its government – without notifying the Attorney General, as required by U.S. law.

 

At the direction and control of PRC government officials, Sun coordinated with U.S.-based individuals to promote the PRC’s interests by, among other things, “orchestrat[ing]” a team to help elect a politician identified in court documents as “Individual 1” to political office and promoting pro-PRC propaganda in the United States.

 

Sun also closely surveilled the then-President of Taiwan during her April 2023 visit to Southern California, reporting directly to PRC officials on her movements.

 

At the direction of PRC officials, from 2020 through 2023, Sun and Individual 1 worked together to operate a purported news website for the local Chinese American community. Sun and Individual 1 received and executed directives from PRC government officials to post pro-PRC content.

 

Throughout 2022, Sun also worked as the campaign advisor for Individual 1 who was running for a city council seat in a Southern California city. Individual 1 was elected to that city council in November 2022.

 

In December 2022, Sun attended a meeting in Southern California with a group of other people, including Individual 1, whom PRC officials were told was a “team dedicated” to PRC interests, according to Sun’s plea agreement.

 

In February 2023, Sun drafted a report for PRC officials to solicit additional money and taskings from the PRC government. Sun’s report summarized his personal experience, including his past service in the People’s Liberation Army, China’s military. In the report, Sun stated that he had worked in the United States to lead “delegations of U.S. dignitaries and cultural workers to China,” “persist in resisting any hostile forces that undermine the friendship of U.S.-China relations, and Chinese secessionist forces,” and, “most of all, during the 2022 U.S. midterm elections, I orchestrated and organized my team to win the election for city council” for Individual 1, whom Sun called a “new political star,” Sun’s plea agreement states.

To that end, Sun’s report requested $80,000 from the PRC government to fund a pro-PRC demonstration at a Fourth of July parade in Washington, D.C.

 

Throughout 2023 and 2024, Sun communicated with an official at the consulate general of the People’s Republic of China in Los Angeles regarding activities in Southern California related to Taiwan.

 

In April 2023, President Tsai Ing-Wen of Taiwan visited Southern California. Sun sent real-time updates on President Tsai’s movements to a Los Angeles-based PRC consular official and sought approval from this official to publish an article about President Tsai’s visit on the website he operated with Individual 1. Sun also took photographs of individuals protesting in support of and opposition to President Tsai and sent those photographs to the consular official.

 

“As an agent for the PRC, [Sun] worked covertly in the United States with his primary co-conspirator John Chen, a/k/a ‘Chen Jun,’” prosecutors argued in a sentencing memorandum. “Chen was a high-level member of the PRC intelligence apparatus, who regularly attended elite [Chinese Communist Party] functions, including military parades…[and] met personally with PRC President Xi Jinping . . . . Per his own report, and other communications between Chen and PRC officials, [Sun] served as Chen’s right-hand man in the United States for decades.”

 

Chen was sentenced in November 2024 to 20 months in federal prison after pleading guilty in the Southern District of New York to acting as an illegal agent of the PRC and conspiracy to bribe a public official.

 

The FBI investigated this matter.

Two spacecraft observed both hemispheres of interstellar comet simultaneously

The Southwest Research Institute-led Ultraviolet Spectrograph (UVS) instruments aboard ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) spacecraft and NASA’s Europa Clipper made unique observations of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS in late 2025.

SwRI leads the UVS instruments on both spacecraft, simultaneously imaging both hemispheres of the comet and detecting the comet’s ultraviolet emissions.

 

Only the third recognized interstellar object, 3I/ATLAS entered our solar system in July of 2025.

“As the comet passed between Juice and Europa Clipper, we were able to informally coordinate observations between the two spacecraft,” said Dr. Kurt Retherford, the principal investigator of Juice-UVS and Europa-UVS.

“Crucially, we observed hydrogen, oxygen and carbon emissions. These elements are produced when gases escaping the comet’s nucleus break apart into atoms when exposed to sunlight.”

 

UVS is one of 10 science instruments aboard the Juice spacecraft. The mission has overarching goals of investigating potentially habitable worlds around the gas giant and studying the Jupiter system as an archetype for gas giants in our solar system and beyond.

“Observing the interstellar comet was some exciting bonus science. The resulting rare and unique dataset includes gas emissions and scattered dust,” said SwRI’s Dr. Philippa Molyneux, co-deputy principal investigator for the Juice-UVS instrument.

“This was the first time we’ve had simultaneous direct views of a comet’s coma of escaping gas from two directions. Europa Clipper showed us the night side of the comet, with a great deal of scattered dust, while Juice imaged mostly glowing gas on the day side.”

 

Comets are composed of water ice, dry ice (i.e., CO2 ice) and other materials. As they approach the Sun, comets heat up, and their components escape into space.

The researchers found higher levels of carbon emissions from 3I/ATLAS than expected early on, especially in comparison to typical comets from our solar system, corroborating similar findings through other observations about the interstellar comet’s origin and composition.

 

Observing the trends of emissions over several days revealed how the ratios of these molecules changed and how the comet evolved during its journey through our solar system.

“By studying the ratio of water ice and dry ice, we can compare the composition of this interstellar comet to comets native to our solar system,” Molyneux said. “This helps us understand if the solar system where 3I/ATLAS formed is similar to ours or different.”

“I think the coordination with Europa Clipper was a fun and impactful demonstration that showed how the two projects could coordinate observation plans,” Retherford said. “And because SwRI’s team is involved in both missions, it was a special highlight for us in terms of working together.”

 

Juice is the first large-class mission in ESA’s Cosmic Vision 2015–2025 program. The spacecraft and science instruments were built by teams from more than 20 European countries, Japan and the United States.

SwRI’s UVS instrument team includes additional scientists from the University of Colorado Boulder, the SETI institute, the University of Leicester (U.K.), Imperial College London (U.K.), the University of Liège (Belgium), the Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) and the Laboratoire Atmosphères, Milieux, Observations Spatiales (France). The Planetary Missions Program Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center oversees the UVS contribution to ESA through the agency’s Solar System Exploration Program.

The Juice spacecraft was developed by Airbus Defence and Space.

 

Europa Clipper’s three main science objectives are to determine the thickness of the moon’s icy shell and its interactions with the ocean below, to investigate its composition, and to characterize its geology.

The mission’s detailed exploration of Europa will help scientists better understand the astrobiological potential for habitable worlds beyond our planet.

China's 'Shock' Statement: Palestinians Have Right To Use 'Armed Force' Against Israel

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

The South Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh’s double murder convictions and life sentence, ordering a new trial in the killings of his wife and son.

 

In the latest twist in a winding legal saga,the state’s top court ruled that Murdaugh was denied his right to a fair trial because of Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca “Becky” Hill’s “improper external influences on the jury.”

 

“Hill placed her fingers on the scales of justice,” the court wrote in its unanimous decision, accusing her of “shocking” interference by suggesting to jurors that they could not trust Murdaugh’s testimony.

 

Jim Griffin, Murdaugh’s lawyer, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

 

Murdaugh was convicted two years ago in the June 2021 slayings of his wife, Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh, and their 22-year-old son, Paul Murdaugh, in a trial that drew national attention.

 

In the case, prosecutors accused Murdaugh of carrying out the killings to earn pity and distract from financial crimes that threatened to derail his public reputation.

 

The jury convicted the former personal injury lawyer on two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He had pleaded not guilty.

 

The scion of a prominent South Carolina legal dynasty, Murdaugh has vehemently denied killing his wife and younger son since their bodies were discovered outside their home.

 

“I respect this court, but I’m innocent,” Murdaugh told a judge during his sentencing in March 2023. “I would never under any circumstances hurt my wife, Maggie, and I would never under any circumstances hurt my son Paul Paul.”

 

But the judge, Clifton Newman, responded with a forceful rebuke of Murdaugh and alluded to the defendant’s addiction to painkillers.

 

“It might not have been you,” Newman said. “It might have been the monster you’ve become when you take 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 opioid pills. Maybe you become another person. I’ve seen that before.

 

“The person standing before me was not the person who committed the crime, though is the same individual,”Newman added. (WTF)

 

Wednesday’s ruling does not mean Murdaugh will walk free.He is serving a 40-year federal sentence after pleading guilty to stealing some $12 million from his clients.

 

Hill, for her part, pleaded guilty last year to criminal charges for showing sealed court exhibits to a photographerand lying about it in court. She was sentenced to a year of probation.

 

“There is no excuse for the mistakes I made. I’m ashamed of them,” Hill said in a short statement to the court.

 

Hill’s lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

NASA’s Planet-Hunting TESS Reveals Dazzling Night Sky

NASA’s TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) has released its most complete view of the starry sky to date, filling in gaps from previous observations.

Nearly 6,000 colored dots scattered across the image show the locations of either confirmed or candidate exoplanets — worlds beyond our solar system — identified by the mission as of September 2025 at the end of TESS’s second extended mission.

 

“Over the last eight years, TESS has become a fire hose of exoplanet science,” said Rebekah Hounsell, a TESS associate project scientist at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“It’s helped us find planets of all different sizes, from tiny Mercury-like ones to those larger than Jupiter. Some of them are even in the habitable zone, where liquid water might be possible on the surface, an important factor in our search for life beyond Earth.”

 

The TESS mission scans a wide swath of the sky, called a sector, for about a month at a time using its four cameras.

These long stares allow the spacecraft to track the brightness changes of tens of thousands of stars, looking for variations in their light that might come from orbiting planets.

 

Researchers assembled an all-sky mosaic made of 96 sectors observed between April 2018, when TESS began its work, and September 2025.

The blue dots in the image mark the locations of nearly 700 confirmed planets, as of September 9. This menagerie includes worlds that may be covered by volcanoes, are being destroyed by their stars, or orbit two stars — experiencing double sunrises and sunsets each day.

The orange dots represent more than 5,000 candidate planets that are awaiting verification.

 

To date, scientists have confirmed over 6,270 exoplanets using missions like TESS, NASA’s retired Kepler Space Telescope, and other facilities.

Also captured in the mosaic is the bright plane of our Milky Way galaxy, seen as a glowing arc through the center. The bright white ovals in the lower left are the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.

These satellite galaxies are located 160,000 and 200,000 light-years away, respectively.

 

“The more we dig into the large TESS dataset, especially using automated algorithms, the more surprises we find,” said Allison Youngblood, the TESS project scientist at NASA Goddard.

“In addition to planets, TESS has helped us study rivers of young stars, observe dynamic galactic behavior, and monitor asteroids near Earth. As TESS fills in more of the night sky, there’s no knowing what it might see next.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) amplified his efforts today to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci accountable for “lying to Congress” about gain-of-function research, with a crucial hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

 

In an X post from May 12, Fox News Congressional correspondent Bill Melugin stated that Paul informed him “the COVID-19 whistleblower who will testify publicly [and] in person before his committee tomorrow morning is an active CIA employee.”

 

Although Melugin was not given a name, today’s hearing identified James Erdman III as the whistleblower. Erdman serves as a CIA Senior Operations Officer.

 

At 10 AM, Paul commenced the Senate hearing by stating, “For years, Americans were told to trust the experts, trust the agencies, trust the intelligence community, and trust the officials who assured us that they were following the science. But the evidence before the committee tells a very different story.”

 

He outlined a system in which a select group of officials, scientists, grant recipients, and intelligence advisors shifted between different agencies, meetings, and briefings. They assessed one another’s work, swayed each other’s conclusions, and subsequently presented these results to Congress and the public as though they had been developed independently.

 

“Only it was not independent; it was a circle, Paul explained. Essentially, he explained that the intelligence community compensates researchers to analyze studies and produce reports. He mentioned that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides funding for their grants, the CIA seeks their expertise and grants them access to classified data, and the National Academies are responsible for publishing their findings. Policy makers then cite the result as a consensus, and “at the center of the government side of this circle was Dr. Anthony Fauci.”

 

“For years,” he said, “Dr. Fauci was not merely a public health official speaking from the NIH. He had a long-standing relationship with the National Security and Intelligence apparatus on biological threats, dangerous pathogens, classified life sciences researches, pandemic preparedness, and COVID origins.”

 

Repeatedly, Paul said, documents reveal Fauci’s involvement in national security discussions that extended well beyond typical public health communication. During the COVID crisis, intelligence officials arranged for Dr. Fauci to review highly classified intelligence assessments that were restricted from being shared outside the White House compound.

 

“But how can Anthony Fauci objectively comment on a discussion of COVID origins when he approved the very funding that may have caused the pandemic virus?” Paul asked. “From the outset of the pandemic, Dr. Fauci shaped the conclusions. Dozens of times, he referred to the idea that the pandemic originating in the lab was a conspiracy.”

 

Paul said that Fauci held “the now infamous” call on February 1, 2020. During that call, some scientists privately expressed serious doubts about a laboratory origin.

 

Concurrently, Fauci collaborated with the National Academies on messaging regarding coronavirus origins. Paul said these individuals were not independent experts reaching a consensus; they were part of the same system designed to arrive at a predetermined conclusion.

USGS, NASA Map Critical Minerals From 65,000 Feet

The U.S. Geological Survey and NASA announced an addition to the world’s largest airborne hyperspectral survey – a digital portrait of critical minerals and geology in the American West, taken from 12 miles up.

“Regaining America’s mineral independence takes a united effort starting with world-leading USGS mineral science and NASA aeronautics.

As of today, the hyperspectral survey from the edge of earth’s atmosphere has covered about 400,000 square miles, giving us a brilliant new picture of the mineral wealth under the western states,” said Andrea Travnicek, assistant secretary of the Interior for Water and Science.

 

“This hyperspectral survey is one of the latest tools for a USGS mission that started in 1879: mapping the mineral resources of the United States.

NASA flies the highest of all our cutting-edge Earth MRI surveys which together show where to look for the minerals needed to drive the U.S. economy and national security,” said USGS Director Ned Mamula.

“The 60-year partnership between the USGS and NASA has benefitted both the space program through USGS mapping the moon for Apollo and Artemis missions and had terrestrial benefits such as Landsat and these hyperspectral flights.”

 

The hyperspectral survey is part of the USGS’s Earth Mapping Resources Initiative, called Earth MRI, and is part of the Geological Earth Mapping Experiment (GEMx), a NASA-USGS partnership.

Earth MRI works with the geological surveys of Colorado and 44 other states, educational institutions and industry to map critical minerals in the ground and in mine waste.

Earth MRI data yields other applications resulting from greater knowledge of the nation’s geology, such as detailed data on water availability and hazards like landslides.

 

The survey flights conducted by NASA’s ER-2 high-altitude plane from Colorado Springs started April 1 and will continue until May 20, weather permitting.

The aircraft carries instruments that measure dozens to hundreds of wavelengths of light—including ultraviolet, short-wave infrared and thermal infrared—reflecting off the Earth's surface.

These measurements capture 'spectral fingerprints' that scientists at the USGS analyze to identify minerals.

Illustrating the importance of minerals to technology, the ER-2 is itself primarily constructed from aluminum, nickel and titanium, all of which appear on the 2025 List of Critical Minerals maintained by the USGS.

The United States relied on imported sources for all the titanium it used last year, and at least 75% percent of the aluminum and 41% of the nickel, according to the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026.

 

The last step in the process is ground-truthing – examining rocks in prospective areas detected from the edge of space. Field measurements further refine the airborne data.

Using backpack-mounted spectrometers, they measure the same areas from the ground to account for atmospheric conditions and confirm mineral identifications.

 

Last month, USGS geologist Erik Tharalson investigated an anomaly located by a previous flight in the hyperspectral survey that could be related to a porphyry copper deposit, a potential source of critical minerals.

"It’s a large outcrop of volcanic rocks, but the minerals in it would be easy to miss. That’s why the hyperspectral survey is so critically important,” Tharalson said.

 

USGS and NASA are continuing airborne imaging from California to the Rocky Mountain front range and partnering with academic and commercial groups on targeted surveys of legacy mine sites.

Hyperspectral mapping is part of Earth MRI’s broader effort to collect and analyze geologic samples and to acquire geophysical and geochemical data that together provide a national-scale picture of mineral resources.

 

“The Earth MRI hyperspectral campaign highlights the importance of continued investment in modern geoscience data collection across the western United States.

Colorado’s complex geology makes the Rocky Mountain region an ideal area for advanced airborne mapping and remote sensing work.

The information collected through these efforts can improve our understanding of critical mineral resources, water systems, and geologic hazards while supporting future geologic mapping and scientific research.

Through AASG, state geological surveys look forward to continued collaboration with federal partners to help maximize the scientific and public value of these efforts,” said Colorado Geological Survey Director Matt Morgan, who is president of the American Association of State Geologists.

 

Earth MRI data is made publicly available in keeping with longstanding USGS Fundamental Science Practices and Executive Order 14303 Restoring Gold Standard Science which emphasizes the importance of scientific peer review and open communication.

Mythos finds a curl vulnerability

 

Back in April 2026 Anthropic caused a lot of media noise when they concluded that their new AI model Mythos is dangerously good at finding security flaws in source code. Apparently Mythos was so good at this that Anthropic would not release this model to the public yet but instead trickle it out to a selected few companies for a while to allow a few good ones(?) to get a head start and fix the most pressing problems first, before the general populace would get their hands on it.

 

The whole world seemed to lose its marbles. Is this the end of the world as we know it? An amazingly successful marketing stunt for sure.

Mr. Chairman, Senator Reed, Members of the Committee on Armed Services—it

is an honor to appear before you this morning as a nominee to become Assistant

Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs.

Leader McConnell, thank you for your very generous introduction. I am tremen-

dously grateful for the confidence you showed in me 17 years ago—the experiences,

opportunities, and lessons provided by my tenure in your office played an essential

role in inspiring a career in public service that has led to my appearing before this

Committee today.

I would like to thank the President of the United States and the Secretary of De-

fense for my nomination. If confirmed, it would be a tremendous and humbling

honor to serve our country at the Department of Defense. Let me also thank my

friends, mentors, and former bosses, colleagues, and counterparts, without whose

support I would likely not be here today.

I am particularly grateful some of my family could join me this morning.

My parents, Fred and Suzanne, of Lexington, Kentucky and my brother, Fred, of

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, are joined by my girlfriend, Alina Polyakova.

The responsibilities of the office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Inter-

national Security Affairs cover the vast majority of the globe, and stretch across five

combatant commands. It is impossible these days to open a newspaper without con-

fronting bold face headlines about some conflict, crisis, or challenge with which the

dedicated government servants and military personnel who work in ISA are already

ably grappling.

The national security policy challenges these quiet professionals confront everyday

are real, and they are sobering.

If confirmed, it would be a great privilege to serve alongside these American patri-

ots to help rebuild America’s military capabilities and readiness, bolster and mod-

ernize critical alliances such as NATO while rebalancing burden-sharing within

these alliances, strengthen United States credibility and influence in regions of stra-

tegic interest, defeat ISIS and other terrorist groups, confront Russian and Iranian

aggression, combat new cyber threats, and create conditions favorable for safe-

guarding our national security and promoting America’s economic prosperity.

If confirmed, I look forward to working closely with this Committee, and with the

Congress as a whole, to address these and other national security challenges facing

our country.

GOP Rep.Virginia Foxx doesn’t pull punches, even when speaking to a child.

 

When 10-year-old Christian wrote to her about electric vehicles for a school project, the 82-year-old congresswoman quickly fired back.

 

The letter went public after the fourth grader’s mother, Emily Mango, 42, shared it on social media, calling it a “reprehensible response” to her son.

 

“He researched, cited facts, and made good arguments in his essay - an essay that had nothing to do with politics. He was proud of his essay,” the North Carolina mom said.

 

The Daily Beast has reached out to Mango for comment.

 

Foxx’s response began with a polite thank-you, telling the fourth grader that she was grateful he was “taking the time to share your thoughts.”It quickly took a turn for the worse when she slammed his proposal to offer $5000 tax rebates for electric cars as a foolish idea.

“Your request that ‘the federal government should give a $5,000 tax rebate for all new electric car purchases’ means that the federal government must take that money out of the pockets of hardworking people who may not have the means to buy an electric vehicle in the first place,” Foxx wrote.

 

“YOU and your classmates will be responsible for paying down the national debt,” she added pointedly, arguing that climate change wasn’t as pressing as the ballooning of the national debt.

 

She offered him links to learn more about climate change from Fox News, National Review, The Washington Times, and the Wall Street Journal editorial board.

 

The former college professor then took aim at his teachers, insinuating they were brainwashing him.

 

“‘Incidentally, please ask your teacher to explain propaganda to you,” Foxx wrote.

 

“While I will never be able to know, my guess is that your teachers will not give you a good educational experience and help you learn to think, as they are too interested in indoctrinating you. How sad,” she added.

 

The Daily Beast has reached out to Foxx’s office for comment.

 

Christian’s mother was furious about the letter, saying that the legislator “crossed a line” when attacking the 10-year-old and his teachers.

 

“You don’t deserve to be on a Committee for Education when you talk to children like this and think so lowly of teachers. No wonder NC is 50th in education funding level under your ‘leadership.’”

 

The congresswoman, who represents North Carolina’s fifth district,is running for re-election this year and has previously secured a Trump endorsement.

 

Prior to serving as a congresswoman, Foxx was a college professor, working at a local community college and Appalachian State University. She was also the president of Mayland Community College.

 

She made her first forays into politics while serving on the Watauga County Board of Education for 12 years.

U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and other intelligence officials are investigating U.S. funding to overseas laboratories handling biological research.

 

Initial searches of intelligence files showed that the U.S. government has provided money to more than 120 biolaboratories in more than 30 countries, a spokesperson for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence told The Epoch Times in an email on May 12.

 

That includes biolabs in Ukraine that “may be at risk of compromise due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war” and other laboratories that have researched highly contagious pathogens, potentially including research that enhanced the pathogens’ virulence or transmissibility, with little visibility or oversight, according to the office.

 

The Department of Defense in a 2022 document said the United States had invested approximately $200 million since 2005 to support work at 46 Ukrainian laboratories, health facilities, and diagnostic sites.

 

Gabbard issued new guidance to officials that directs them to step up the collection of information on laboratories and related facilities outside the United States, which is already yielding new details on clinical trials being performed at the facilities, officials said.

 

The information has raised ethical, financial, and security concerns, according to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

 

“The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the catastrophic global impact research on dangerous pathogens in biolabs can have,” Gabbard said in a statement. “Yet despite these obvious dangers, politicians, so-called health professionals … and entities within the Biden administration’s national security team lied to the American people about the existence of these U.S.-funded and supported biolabs and threatened those who attempted to expose the truth.”

 

She said that the Trump administration is “working closely with partners across the government to identify where these labs are, what pathogens they contain, and what ‘research’ is being conducted, to end dangerous Gain-of-Function research that threatens the health and wellbeing of the American people and the world.”

 

The first COVID-19 cases were detected in 2019 near a biolaboratory in Wuhan, China, that received funding from the United States.

 

Gabbard’s investigation was prompted by a May 5, 2025, executive order from President Donald Trump that forbade federal funding from supporting risky research, or experiments aimed at increasing functions of a virus, unless proper oversight is in place.

 

Trump said in the order that “dangerous gain-of-function research on biological agents and pathogens has the potential to significantly endanger the lives of American citizens” and that the government had previously approved funding for research “in China and other countries where there is limited United States oversight or reasonable expectation of biosafety enforcement.” COVID-19, he said, “revealed the risk of such practices.”

For years, Netflix represented to consumers that it did not collect or share extensive user data.In reality, Netflix is a logging company that records and monetizes billions of behavioral events—and occasionally streams movies. Netflix uses intentional engineering to track and log users’ viewing habits, preferences, devices, household networks, application usage, and other sensitive behavioral data.Every interaction on the platform became a data point revealing information about the user.This tracking applied to not only adults’ accounts, but also kids’ profiles.

 

Netflix has then disclosed this information to commercial data brokers and advertising technology companies, where it was combined withdata collected from other platforms to build detailed consumer profiles. Netflix users’ data is essentially shopped across Big Ad Tech’s shadowy network. The company earns billions of dollars every year from secretly selling consumer data.

 

The company also designs its platform to be addictive. This is accomplished using features that are designed to manipulate users to take actions Netflix wants them to take. For example, the autoplay function creates a continuous stream of content intended to keep users, including children, watching for extended periods of time.

 

“Netflix has built a surveillance program designed to illegally collect and profit from Texans’ personal data without their consent, and my office will do everything in our power to stop it,” said Attorney General Paxton. “Netflix is not the ad-free and kid-friendly platform it claims to be. Instead, it has misled consumers while exploiting their private data to make billions. I will continue to work to protect Texas families from deceptive practices by Big Tech companies and ensure that corporations are held accountable under Texas law.”

 

Attorney General Paxton is seeking to hold Netflix accountable under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act (“DTPA”). The lawsuit seeks to stop the unlawful collection and disclosure of user data, require Netflix to disable autoplay by default on kid’s profiles, and secure other injunctive relief and civil penalties. South Carolina Republicans tank redistricting, for now

Tuesday’s vote doesn’t mark a definitive end for efforts to redraw the state’s maps — but it does make it harder to accomplish this year.

 

The South Carolina Senate just made it harder for the state to redraw its congressional map, resisting pressure from President Donald Trump.

Lawmakers on Tuesday failed to reach the two-thirds majority needed to approve a measure that would have allowed them to take up a vote on redistricting even after the legislative session ends later this week. Five Republicans joined all Democrats in voting against the proposal.

 

Republican Gov. Henry McMaster could still call a special session, though his office has so far dismissed that idea.

The Tuesday vote doesn’t mark a definitive end for redistricting efforts in the Palmetto State. But it does make it less likely that Trump will get his wish of eliminating the state’s sole Democratic district — represented by the powerful Rep. Jim Clyburn — by this year’s midterm elections.

“The South Carolina State Senate has a big vote tomorrow on Redistricting. I’m watching closely,” Trump wrote on social media Monday evening.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey told reporters in Columbia last week that he would oppose any effort to redraw the state’s congressional maps. His resistance drew the attention of Republicans in Washington, including Trump who called the senator at least twice to encourage him to take up the redistricting effort.

Massey still voted against the measure. In an impassioned speech prior to Tuesday’s vote, he acknowledged that his decision will likely draw the ire of national Republicans: “I understand that there are likely consequences for me personally standing here right now and taking the position that I’m in. … My conscience is clear on this one, y’all.” (Meaning in the past he’s blocked Rep votes intentionally)

 

He took a swipe at national Republicans for failing to deliver much with the majority they currently have.And he warned that if Republicans were to draw out Democrats entirely from the state’s congressional delegation, South Carolina risks losing influence the next time a Democrat occupies the White House.(he fails to admit Dems would do this in a heart beat to never change the districts, but the good ole boys on both sides work together. NASA’s Perseverance Rover Snaps Selfie in Mars’ Western Frontier

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover recently took a self-portrait against a sweeping backdrop of ancient Martian terrain at a location the science team calls “Lac de Charmes.”

Assembled from 61 individual images, the selfie shows Perseverance training its mast on a rocky outcrop on which it had just made a circular abrasion patch, with the western rim of Jezero Crater stretching into the background.

The selfie was captured on March 11, the 1,797th Martian day, or sol, of the mission, during the rover’s deepest push west beyond the crater.

 

Perseverance is in its fifth science campaign, known as the Northern Rim Campaign, of its mission on the Red Planet. The Lac de Charmes region represents some of the most scientifically compelling terrain the rover has visited.

“We took this image when the rover was in the ‘Wild West’ beyond the Jezero Crater rim — the farthest west we have been since we landed at Jezero a little over five years ago,” said Katie Stack Morgan, Perseverance’s project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

“We had just abraded and analyzed the ‘Arethusa’ outcrop, and the rover was sitting in a spot that provided a great view of both the Jezero Rim and the local terrain outside of the crater.”

 

During abrading, the rover grinds down a portion of the rock’s surface, allowing the science team to analyze what’s inside.

The technique enabled the team to determine that the Arethusa outcrop is composed of igneous minerals that likely predate the formation of Jezero Crater. Igneous rocks with large mineral crystals form underground as molten rock cools and solidifies.

Perseverance acquired the selfie — its sixth since landing on Mars in 2021 — using the WATSON (Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and eNgineering) camera mounted at the end of its robotic arm, which made 62 precision movements over approximately one hour to build the composite image (learn more about how selfies are made).

 

Significant science

Along with the selfie, Perseverance used Mastcam-Z, located on its mast, to capture a mosaic of the “Arbot” area in Lac de Charmes on April 5, or Sol 1882.

Made of 46 images, the panorama offers one of the richest geological vistas of the mission, revealing a windswept landscape of diverse rock textures.

The image provides the team a clear road map for investigating the ridgeline and the area’s ancient rock variety, including what appear to be megabreccia — large fragments (some the size of skyscrapers) hurled by a massive meteorite impact that occurred on the plain called Isidis Planitia about 3.9 billion years ago.

“What I see in this image is excellent exposure of likely the oldest rocks we are going to investigate during this mission,” said Ken Farley, Perseverance’s deputy project scientist at Caltech in Pasadena.

“There is a sharp ridgeline visible in the mosaic whose jagged, angular texture contrasts starkly with the rounded boulders in the foreground.

We also see a feature that may be a volcanic dike, a vertical intrusion of magma that hardened in place and was left standing as the softer surrounding material eroded away over billions of years.”

 

The rock color in the mosaic offers less information to the science team than the distinctive textures, which help them differentiate the rock types.

Unlike Jezero Crater’s river delta, which is composed of sedimentary rock, some rocks here appear to be extrusive igneous rocks (molten rock that reached the surface as lava flows) and impactites (rocks created or modified by a meteorite impact) believed to have formed before the crater about 4 billion years ago, offering a window into the planet’s deep early crust.

 

New ballgame, near-marathon distance

“The rover’s study of these really ancient rocks is a whole new ballgame,” said Stack Morgan.

“These rocks — especially if they’re from deep in the crust — could give us insights applicable to the entire planet, like whether there was a magma ocean on Mars and what initial conditions eventually made it a habitable planet.”

 

After studying Arethusa, Perseverance drove northwest to the Arbot area, where it has been analyzing other rocky outcrops.

When the team is satisfied with the work accomplished there, the rover will drive south to “Gardevarri,” a site with a notably clear exposure of olivine-bearing rocks.

Formed in cooling magma, these types of rocks contain information that can help scientists better understand Mars’ volcanic history and provide context for large-scale geological processes.

From there, the rover is expected to head southeast toward a region the team is calling “Singing Canyon” for more insights into the planet’s early crust.

 

After more than five years of surface operations, Perseverance has abraded 62 rocks, collected 27 rock cores in its sample tubes (25 sealed, 2 unsealed), and traveled almost 26 miles (42 kilometers) — in other words, just shy of a marathon (26.2 miles, or 42.195 kilometers).

“Having the benefit of four previous rover missions, the Perseverance team has always known our mission was a marathon and not a sprint,” said acting Perseverance project manager Steve Lee at JPL.

“We’ve almost reached marathon distance. Our selfie may show that the rover is a bit dusty, but its beauty is more than skin deep. Perseverance is in great shape as we continue our explorations and extend into ultramarathon drive distances.”

Henrietta Holsman Fore (born December 9, 1948) is an American government official and business executive who was the executive director of UNICEF from 2018 until 2022.[1] Fore is chairman and CEO of Holsman International, a management, investment, and advisory services company. From 2001 to 2005, Fore served as the 37th Director of the United States Mint in the U.S. Department of Treasury, serving Secretary of Treasury, Paul H. O'Neill and Secretary of Treasury John W. Snow.[10]

 

From 2005 to 2007, Fore served as Under Secretary of State for Management, the Chief Operating Officer for the United States Department of State, serving Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice.[11]

 

From May 2007 to January 2009, Fore served as the 13th Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID),[9] and Director of United States Foreign Assistance, holding the equivalent rank as Deputy Secretary of State.

 

In January 2018, Fore was appointed as the executive director of UNICEF by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.[12] As part of this position, Fore has worked in collaboration with GAVI, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the World Health Organization, among others, to facilitate vaccination to combat the COVID-19 global pandemic.[4]

 

Fore resigned in July 2021 to attend to her husband’s serious health issue but offered to stay on until her successor was recruited.[13] Her successor, Catherine M. Russell, assumed office on February 1, 2022.[14]

 

Fore is the Chairman and CEO of Holsman International; Chairman and Owner of Stockton Products[9] and Vincenza; and Chairman and Managing Partner of Seaward International Company. She is a Mission Board Member of EQT Future Fund;[15] Director of Imperative Care;[16] Board Trustee of Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS); and a Board Member of Global Preparedness Monitoring Board,[17] co-convened by the World Bank Group and WHO.

Fore lives in Nevada with her husband Richard L. Fore, who has four children.[4] She has one sister, Marta Babson.[5][6] Fore is a Republican
