Over the last several weeks, the outlines of a plot have begun to emerge that could signal how President Donald Trump, along with MAGA media figures and activists, could attempt to severely curtail voting rights under the pretext of declaring a national emergency posed by China.

 

The details of the scheme remain publicly vague, and may not yet come to pass, but the short version looks something like this: First, the White House would declassify and release documents purporting to show foreign interference in U.S. elections, especially by the Chinese Communist Party.

 

Next, Trump would use that supposed “proof” of a stolen election to declare a national emergency, thereby — according to those pushing this idea — giving him extraordinary powers over the upcoming midterms. That move would serve as a way to advance the anti-voting rights measures in the SAVE America Act, like forcing voters to prove their citizenship, without having to actually pass the law — which Congress, so far at least, appears reluctant to do.

 

The main players here come not only from the fever swamp backwaters of MAGA media, but also from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the White House. Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon is a central node, attempting to advance the operation on his War Room podcast, aired on right-wing network Real America’s Voice, long a major source of misinformation about the 2020 election.

 

Bannon’s RAV colleague John Solomon, whose role in the plot appears to be running the declassification effort, was recently appointed to a White House “task force” into supposed election integrity. Solomon was Media Matters’ Misinformer of the Year in 2019 for his role in laundering misinformation about the Bidens and Ukraine through his opinion columns.

 

Also in the mix is Peter Schweizer, who founded the Government Accountability Institute with Bannon and has moved from spreading misinformation about the Clintons to claiming that China is taking over the United States by exploiting birthright citizenship.

 

Then there’s Cleta Mitchell, a right-wing lawyer who was on the January 2021 call when Trump urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” enough ballots to tip the state his way. She referenced Schweizer in a June 20 appearance on War Room, positively paraphrasing an argument he made on his podcast acknowledging that much of the voting activity he wants to suppress is actually legal.

 

“Peter Schweizer put it pretty well last week in a podcast that he does with Eric Eggers, and the question they posed is: If fraud is made — if election fraud is made legal, is it still fraud?” Mitchell asked. “Because what's happened in California over the last decade is that the far-left Democrat, socialist, Marxists, communists have completely upended every vestige of election integrity.” (Bannon had teed her up by referencing the Los Angeles mayoral primary, claiming without evidence: “They stole it right in front of our face and laughed at us the entire time.")

In 2024, Breitbart News senior contributor and president of the Government Accountability Institute, Peter Schweizer, revealed in his book Blood Money: Why the Powerful Turn a Blind Eye While China Kills Americans, thatSingham and Alibaba co-founder Joseph Tsai, helped radical groups using transgenderism against the “capitalist order.”

 

Indeed, the Fox article noted Singham’s deep pockets have funded socialist, communist, and Marxist groups across the United States:

 

According to sources familiar with the matter, the grand jury in Manhattan has issued subpoenas as part of a probe launched by U.S. AttorneyJay Claytonfor the Southern District of New York, one of the country’s most powerful districts for federal prosecutions. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche authorized the investigation as the Trump administration seeks to crack down on fraud, money laundering and other financial crimes in the multibillion-dollar nonprofit industry.

 

The grand jury action follows a Fox News Digital investigation published in mid-March, documenting how Singham pumped $285 million from his base in Shanghai into a Goldman Sachs philanthropy fund and two shell corporations that then fed the money into a constellation of nonprofit organizations, media operations, and activist groups pushing sectarian division, identity politics, and support for socialist politicians.

 

Sources told Fox investigators were looking into the shifting of money within the leftist’s network, and trying to determine if wire fraud, bank fraud, or money laundering was committed.

We do also have somebody to talk with us who was an eyewitness to the actual crash. He was watch from Arlington, Virginia, which is a suburb. His name is Tim Timmerman.

FRANKEN: You are a pilot. Tell us what you saw. TIMMERMAN: I was looking out the window; I live on the 16th floor, overlooking the Pentagon, in a corner apartment, so I have quite a panorama. And being next to National Airport, I hear jets all the time, but this jet engine was way too loud. I looked out to the southwest, and it came right down 395, right over Colombia Pike, and as is went by the Sheraton Hotel, the pilot added power to the engines. I heard it pull up a little bit more, and then I lost it behind a building.

 

And then it came out, and I saw it hit right in front of – it didn't appear to crash into the building; most of the energy was dissipated in hitting the ground, but I saw the nose break up, I saw the wings fly forward, and then the conflagration engulfed everything in flames. It was horrible.

 

FRANKEN: What can you tell us about the plane itself?

 

TIMMERMAN: It was a Boeing 757, American Airlines, no question.

 

FRANKEN: You say that it was a Boeing, and you say it was a 757 or 767?

 

TIMMERMAN: 7-5-7.

 

FRANKEN: 757, which, of course…

 

TIMMERMAN: American Airlines.

 

FRANKEN: American Airlines, one of the new generation of jets.

 

TIMMERMAN: Right. It was so close to me it was like looking out my window and looking at a helicopter. It was just right there.

 

FRANKEN: We were told that it was flying so low that it clipped off a couple of light poles as it was coming in.

 

TIMMERMAN: That might have happened behind the apartments that occluded my view.

 

And when it reappeared, it was right before impact, and like I said, it was right before impact, and I saw the airplane just disintegrate and blow up into a huge ball of flames.

 

FRANKEN: So there was a fireball that you saw?

 

TIMMERMAN: Absolutely. And the building shook, and it was quite a tremendous explosion.

 

FRANKEN: What did you see after that?

 

TIMMERMAN: Nothing but the flames. I sat here, and I took a few pictures out of my window, and I noticed the fire trucks and the responses was just wonderful. Fire trucks were there quickly. I saw the area; the building didn't look very damaged initially, but I do see now, looking out my window, there's quite a chunk in it. But I think the blessing here might have been that the airplane hit before it hit the building, it hit the ground, and a lot of energy might have gone that way. That's what it appeared like.

 

FRANKEN: There is, of course – we heard some discussion about the fact that it could have been worse had it actually gone a little bit higher and gone into what is the called the ring, the center ring…

FRANKEN: This is a five-sided building.

 

TIMMERMAN: As you know, the rings are A, B, C, D, E. It is just across the E ring on the outside, and that's why I felt it didn't look as damaged as it could be. It looked like on the helipad, which is on that side.

 

FRANKEN: Did you see any people being removed, any injured being removed, that type of thing?

 

TIMMERMAN: No, sir. I am up about a quarter a mile it may be a little bit closer and at that point, I saw nothing like that.

Sony Abandons Social Media for 24 Hours+ After Controversially Killing Physical Games

 

Update [Fri 3rd Jul 2026, 12:15am]: It’s now been over 24 hours since Sony posted on any of its social media accounts, and it looks unlikely to return any time soon.

 

The platform holder’s X, Facebook, Bluesky, and Instagram accounts haven’t changed since yesterday’s controversial physical games news.

 

YouTube has been updated a handful of times with new trailers, although these have clearly been submitted by third-party publishers in coordination with their marketing efforts.

 

The vast majority of the comments on YouTube are all about the company’s decision to stop manufacturing discs in 2028.

 

It’s going to be interesting to see how long it maintains this; when it closed Bluepoint it stayed away from social media for over 72 hours, but I don’t think fan sentiment is going to cool as quickly on this particular issue.

 

Original Story: Sony has seemingly abandoned all of its social media accounts after today’s controversial decision to stop manufacturing physical games in 2028.

 

The manufacturer posted on its X (or Twitter) account today to confirm the news, and hasn’t updated since.

 

Ordinarily it’d share today’s PS Plus Essential update with its followers, but it hasn’t published that anywhere aside from the PS Blog.

 

A Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls gameplay trailer, detailing the moves and combos of Iron-Man, also went out on the fighter’s official account – but not the PlayStation one.

“The end of physical discs is the end of my loyalty,” one heavily upvoted comment says.

 

This isn’t the first time Sony has quit social media during adversity: it took a 72-hour timeout following the disgraceful closure of Bluepoint earlier this year.

 

In this instance, I’m not convinced 72-hours is going to be long enough – this backlash is going to last a long, long time.

PlayStation’s Physical Media-Free Future Isn’t Just Concerning, It’s Offensive

 

You cannot trust digital purchases, and you cannot trust the corporations that offer them.

 

PlayStation has suddenly told its audience to brace themselves for an entirely physical media-free future. The news comes just days after the company unapologetically informed users it was about to permanently delete more than 550 Studio Canal-distributed movies from the PlayStation Network – and literally remove them from the accounts of any customer who previously purchased them.

 

It’s honestly one of the baffling corporate failures to read the room since Microsoft handed Don Mattrick a microphone and allowed him to discuss how the Xbox One probably wasn’t going to suit someone serving on a nuclear submarine. That is, PlayStation is following up a brazenly anti-consumer rugpull of digital content with fresh confirmation that ALL PlayStation content from 2028 onwards will be exclusively digital.

 

The timing would be hilarious if it wasn’t so appallingly offensive.

 

However, the facts are in, and the standard has been set: you cannot trust digital purchases, and you cannot trust the corporations that offer them.

 

While I maintain a library of physical games I love – and I regularly browse charity stores and my local CeX for hard copies of things I know I’ll enjoy having stashed on a shelf – allow me to qualify that I have indeed purchased and downloaded many digital games over the decades, via console and PC storefronts. Provided they always remain available to redownload – even if delisted from sale – it’s a compromise I’ve been willing to concede, for now. Credit where credit’s due, it’s been a pretty workable arrangement to date. For instance, when the disc tray on my Xbox 360 turned to dust during the production of a recent racing game retrospective I put together to celebrate IGN’s 30th anniversary, I found myself pulling down 20-year-old, long-delisted DLC on a replacement console without much fuss.

 

Of course, as much as I appreciate this functionality, I’m not going to celebrate it. The ability to simply re-download content we’ve purchased in the past should be a bare-minimum service. I’m not asking for content to be hand delivered to me; I’m asking for a server to be left switched on. If non-profits like the Internet Archive can do it, I’m sure commercial video game juggernauts can manage likewise.

 

On the flip side, I have never, ever purchased a movie digitally. My household still subscribes to several streaming services, and I’m content enough with their convenience for the time being, but my movie collection is otherwise strictly physical. Prior to entering the media industry I worked at Blockbuster Video during the transition from VHS to DVD, which is where my collection started. I’m hesitant to put a figure on its current size on the off chance that my wife reads this, but I will admit I’m… deeply nostalgic about video stores. Like, proper deeply. If I can’t visit them anymore, building one around me was the next best thing. Now I can work at IGN while still ensconced in a video store. It’s the best of both worlds.

 

At any rate, I’ve never had an interest in starting a digital library of movies beholden to any one vendor. I’ve just never trusted the concept. Frankly, the Studio Canal debacle on PlayStation Network is all the reason I need to ensure I never will.

4Chan trolls UK government with another AI hamster as fines hit $800k

 

4Chan has continued to troll the UK government and Ofcom after they hit the website with fines of over $800,000, and they’re answering with more AI hamsters.

 

Over the last year, a number of governments have been cracking down on what online content can be accessed by children under the age of 18. That includes the United Kingdom, which is working on a social media ban similar to the one that Australia implemented.

 

The UK has implemented age safety verification checks for certain material too and has hit a number of websites with takedowns, as well as fines. 4Chan has been caught up in the latter, being issued with fines that now total over $800,000.

 

While Ofcom, the UK regulator, is still seeking payment from 4Chan, their lawyer has once again responded with an AI hamster.

 

4Chan hits back at UK government’s latest fine

“Ofcom wrote. Again. Demanding that 4chan pay its fine. Sent us bank details and everything. Oh no. Super scary. We replied with a hamster. Again,” Preston Byrne, the website’s lawyer, posted on X.

 

Byrne also showed off the email response he sent to the regulator. “You want money, huh? Come get it,” he started, with an AI hamster wearing a Thug Life hate being surronded by mountains of dollar bills.

 

“As 4Chan has no assets in the United Kingdom (given that it has no connection to the United Kingdom), that would require you to show up in a US court as a platiff, waive soreign immunity, and overcome existing U.S. doctrine regarding the non-enforcement of foreign regulatory penalties.

 

“We suspect that isn’t going to happen. We suspect you know it isn’t going to happen, too.”

 

Byrne also quoted Michael Jackson by telling Ofcom to “beat it,” before giving a quick review of the recent movie release.

 

The additional AI hamsters were a threat in 4Chan’s previous response, as they promised to use an “even larger rodent” next time around.

 

4Chan has continued to challenge the UK government, previously filing a lawsuit in U.S. federal court challenging the UK’s Online Safety Act, and calling Ofcom an “industry-funded global censorship bureau.”

Spanish government ‘quietly bans use of Palantir’ in critical state systems over fears of national security leaks

 

The Spanish government has reportedly begun telling state-backed firms to avoid signing new contacts with US billionaire Peter Thiel’s company.

 

It comes amid fears that sensitive national security information could be leaked, according to Spanish publication El Confidencial.

 

Board members of several publicly listed companies told the newspaper they have been ordered to avoid signing any contracts with the data firm that could jeopardise national sovereignty or strategic information.

 

Moncloa, Spain’s official government website, has not issued any official announcement about banning Palantir outright.

 

But sources told El Confidencial that public and private companies controlled by SEPI, the country’s sovereign wealth fund and state-owned industrial holding company, have been told to blacklist the data firm.

Chrome and Firefox Free VPN extensions caught stealing clipboard data

 

Two browser extensions masquerading as free VPN services were transformed into clipboard stealers through malicious updates.

 

The Chrome and Firefox add-ons retained working proxy functionality to appear legitimate while secretly monitoring copied data and transmitting it to attacker-controlled servers.

 

Socket reports the two extensions operate under the VPN Go: Free VPN branding. At the time of the investigation, the Chrome extension had 146 users on the Chrome Web Store, while the Firefox version had 3,499 users on Mozilla Add-ons. Socket said it has reported both extensions to Google and Mozilla for review and removal.

 

The Chrome extension initially appeared benign. Version 1.0, released on December 22, 2025, functioned solely as a proxy extension. The malicious functionality first appeared in version 1.1, published on May 31, 2026, when the developer added the clipboardRead permission and a content script that executed on every website.

 

The new code polled the clipboard every 500 milliseconds, ignored duplicate entries, split copied text into roughly 1,000-character chunks, generated a session identifier, and passed the data to a background service worker for exfiltration.

 

Clipboard stealers are particularly effective because users routinely copy passwords, MFA codes, API keys, OAuth tokens, cloud credentials, cryptocurrency wallet addresses, and recovery phrases. By abusing browser permissions rather than exploiting the operating system, attackers can capture these secrets with little user visibility.

 

The Firefox extension followed the same pattern. Versions through 1.3.2 behaved as ordinary proxy extensions, but version 1.3.3 introduced clipboard monitoring and exfiltration.

 

Unlike Chrome, which used a content script and background messaging, Firefox implemented the entire clipboard theft routine in its background script, polling the clipboard every 1.5 seconds before uploading newly copied text to the attacker's infrastructure.

 

Socket reports that both extensions share the same infrastructure, use nearly identical clipboard collection and exfiltration logic, and the Chrome package even contains Firefox-specific configuration data, including the Firefox extension ID, suggesting a common codebase or build process.

 

The researchers noted that both extensions could retrieve proxy locations, store proxy credentials, and route browser traffic through remote servers. This legitimate functionality helps build trust and provides a convincing reason for the extensive browser permissions required by the extensions.

 

Socket recommends users immediately remove VPN Go: Free VPN from Chrome and Free VPN by VPN GO from Firefox. Any passwords, API keys, OAuth tokens, cloud credentials, cryptocurrency recovery material, or other sensitive information copied while either extension was installed should be considered compromised.

Ex-CIA Chief John Brennan Sues Trump, Admin Officials Over Allegedly Vindictive Investigations

 

Former CIA Director John Brennan is seeking a court order requiring the Trump administration to retain records related to allegedly vindictive investigations into him and his involvement in probing alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

 

While the Justice Department hadn't formally brought an indictment against Brennan, his lawsuit noted that it had undertaken grand jury investigations in recent months. He accused prosecutors of abusing their authority and said there was reason to believe the administration wasn't preserving records as required under law.

 

Brennan said the judge's order was necessary to preserve his constitutional rights and evidence that he could use to prove vindictiveness in a would-be prosecution.

 

"This Administration has adopted a policy of using criminal process and prosecution to punish the President's perceived adversaries," Brennan's legal team wrote in the court filing.

 

"It is against this backdrop that former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, John O. Brennan … is being vindictively singled out for investigation and prosecution."

 

The lawsuit filed by Brennan's legal team on Wednesday names President Donald Trump, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, FBI Director Kash Patel, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, and other government officials as defendants.

 

A Justice Department spokesperson told The Epoch Times, "While we cannot comment on the existence, or lack thereof, of an investigation, it is certainly rich that John Brennan is accusing anyone of a 'retribution campaign.'"

 

Brennan's lawsuit focused on two investigations. One centered on an alleged conspiracy to deprive Trump of his rights by probing alleged Russian interference. Another was related to statements he made to Congress regarding an intelligence community assessment of Russian influence during the election.

 

Brennan's legal team said Justice Department officials have "taken steps that clearly violate well-established norms and limitations on prosecutorial conduct" as part of the Trump administration's investigations.

 

"Those overreaching actions have violated Director Brennan's constitutional rights and will serve as the basis for challenges to any resulting charges, including motions to dismiss any indictment on the grounds that it is the result of selective and vindictive prosecution," they wrote.

 

The lawsuit noted that the examination of prosecutors' emails, texts, and other communications would allow the courts to determine if decisions were based on legitimate law enforcement concerns or an effort to "selectively" and "vindictively" prosecute the former CIA director.

Tucker Carlson, one of the most influential conservative media figures in the United States, said Israel pushed President Donald Trump into a regime-change war with Iran and argued that the conflict proved the need for a new political party, according to an interview with Columbia Journalism Review.

 

Carlson, a former Fox News host and once a close Trump ally, said he has not spoken to the president since the war began and accused him of betraying the “America first” principles that helped return him to the White House. “I’m going to help build a third party,” Carlson told the magazine. “There should be a good-faith effort to figure out what benefits the country.”

 

The interview placed Carlson’s break with Trump squarely around Israel and Iran. Carlson said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s early visit to the White House after Trump’s inauguration in 2025 made him believe Israel was trying to steer the administration toward war with Tehran.

 

“This is a little early to be siphoning off the energy from this campaign and this election for the benefit of another country,” Carlson recalled thinking. “And I resented it.” He said he quickly concluded that the purpose of those contacts was “a regime-change effort in Iran.”

Carlson described the June 2025 Twelve-Day War as the moment that transformed his political life. “The breaking point and the huge change in my life came in June of 2025, with the Twelve-Day War, which was not about Iran’s nuclear program,” he said. “It was the first salvo in a regime-change effort led by Israel. And that’s just antithetical to everything Trump ran on.”

Carlson said he had repeatedly warned Trump not to attack Iran, including in private meetings at the White House. “I visited him three times at the White House in the month before the Twelve-Day War, and I told him the same thing all three times: ‘You’re not gonna see the rise of a democratic, pro-Western government in Tehran,’” he said.

Asked whether he still speaks to Trump, Carlson replied: “I haven’t spoken to him since the regime-change war began. I’m not interested in talking to him. I feel sorry for him. He’s not a man in charge of his own life at this point.”

Carlson, who hosts The Tucker Carlson Show from his barn studio in Maine, said he had long avoided talking publicly about Israel despite having visited the country several times. He said he believed criticism of Israel was often treated as criticism of all Jews, a dynamic he said made the subject feel too personal and politically dangerous.

“I certainly did not anticipate talking about Israel,” Carlson said. “I had been on TV for thirty years. I don’t think I had ever really talked about Israel. From my perspective, I got pushed into it.”

He said the Iran war changed that calculation. “I’ve been to Israel several times, both for work and as a visitor. I love Jerusalem, amazing city, but I’m not interested in Israel,” he said. “But once you start taking over my political system and destroying my country, then I have a right to care. So now I do care.”

Carlson described the U.S. memorandum of understanding with Iran as “a humiliating defeat for the United States,” but said it was still better than continuing the war. He also argued that Israel had overestimated its power in the conflict. “Imagine it from Israel’s perspective: you think you’re gonna be the regional hegemon, and then, three months later, Iran becomes a global power. It’s a freaking nightmare,” he said.

His criticism of Trump has grown more forceful since the war began. Carlson had been a frequent presence around Trump during the 2024 campaign and urged him to choose JD Vance as his running mate. But in the interview, Carlson said the Iran war showed that voters who backed Trump to avoid foreign entanglements had still ended up with regime change.

“If you vote for Trump and you still wind up in a regime-change war, if Chuck Schumer is strongly behind Trump’s foreign policy, which he is, then we need options,” Carlson said. “We need a third party.”

B-52 Stratofortress Bombers Leave England After Iran War Deployment

 

U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bombers departed from RAF Fairford in the U.K. today, marking the end of a deployment to support the war against Iran. The flights come as the U.S. and Iran are still working toward a peace deal amid a shaky ceasefire occasionally marred by flare-ups of tit-for-tat attacks. However, there has been no mass bombardment of Iran since the April 8 ceasefire.

 

The departure was captured in video and still images by local aviation photographers, two of whom shared their work with us. Andy Riddle told us that six B-52s left RAF Fairford today in two waves of three. The first left at 10:15 a.m. local time and the second at about 2:20 p.m., noted Riddle, whose work can be found on his @Andyyyyrrrr X account.

 

As we noted at the time, at least three of the bombers arrived at Fairford on March 8. It’s unclear when the others arrived. Both U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) declined comment.

 

In our previous reporting, we pointed out that during their time at Fairford, the B-52s operated at a high tempo, striking targets inside Iran. All told, the U.S. claims it struck 13,000 targets, though there is no way for us to know how many involved B-52s from Fairford.

 

You can see one of those jets loaded with stealthy JASSM cruise missiles in a photo shared with us by another local aviation photographer, who uses the @Saint1Mil X account.

 

Meanwhile, a dozen B-1 Lancer bombers remain at the base, according to @Saint1Mil.

 

Since the military won’t comment, we can’t say for sure why the BUFFs left Fairford, but the move comes after both the U.S. and Iran promised to hold off on further tit-for-tat strikes after the latest round that threatened the fragile ceasefire.

 

The flights also took place on a day when the U.S. and Iran concluded a round of indirect talks. However, there were no signs that the parties made headway toward lasting peace. Instead, they focused “on issues that they had supposedly resolved two weeks ago,” Reuters reported.

 

“Sources said negotiators for the two countries spent two days in Doha discussing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and financial incentives for Iran, two pillars of the initial agreement ​they signed in June, rather than more difficult topics that framework was supposed to tee up.”

 

The most difficult of these are the future of Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its stockpile of enriched uranium.

 

Despite the ongoing talks, President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to resume bombing Iran. He also has “weighed a return to all-out war with Iran, holding multiple conversations in recent days with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine on more strikes, but has decided to stick with diplomatic talks for now,” The Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. officials familiar with the discussion.

 

The departure of the B-52s won’t preclude Trump from ordering a new round of strategic aviation attacks. Aside from the remaining B-1s, the Air Force can launch B-52s, as well as B-2 and B-1 bombers from the U.S. to strike Iran as it did during Epic Fury. However, having the B-52s stationed at a base like Fairford much closer to the action helps cut down on flight times, wear and tear on the aircraft and crews, and increases the generation of sorties.

 

As we have frequently reported, given that the U.S. began building up forces in the region in January, many of the ships, aircraft and troops will have to ‘retrograde’ out of the CENTCOM area of responsibility in the coming weeks and months. We’ve already seen aircraft like A-10 Thunderbolt II close attack jets, F-22s, F-15Es and other assets return from the region. As a result, the future of the American footprint there remains a question mark even as negotiations continue. Reinstating a large force once it has been even partially drawn down, assuming there is the will to do so, would take time and would put extreme stress on a force structure that has seen constant surges of deployments over the last year.

Why?Because the Canadian identity is defined by their main focus on ‘not being American.’ It’s all they know.

Riyadh initially refused Washington request to use bases critical to Hormuz ship escort operation, prompting US ire; Riyadh interprets Rubio skipping over Saudi on Gulf tour as snub.

 

US-Saudi relations have significantly deteriorated in recent months amid anger in Riyadh over Washington’s decision to launch a war against Iran that has caused massive blowback for the rest of the region, to the extent that the US is reportedly considering pulling troops from the Gulf kingdom.

 

A Middle Eastern intelligence official told The Times of Israel that relations between the two countries have substantially soured because of the war, partly confirming a Wall Street Journal report on Wednesday.

 

Saudi Arabia refused to allow the US to use its bases to conduct Project Freedom, which was aimed at breaking Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz by escorting stuck ships out of the channel.

 

Saudi bases and airspace were critical to the operation and Riyadh’s refusal to cooperate forced the US to abort the mission, the WSJ revealed. At the time, US President Donald Trump claimed that it was progress in talks with Iran that led him to call off Project Freedom after less than two days.

 

Infuriated by the Saudi decision, the White House threatened to hold back the delivery of interceptors that Riyadh had been using to shoot down Iranian missiles and drones, WSJ said, citing US and Arab officials familiar with the matter.

 

Riyadh subsequently relented and Project Freedom resumed covertly, but the damage wouldn’t be easily undone, US officials said.

 

The US is now considering reducing its military presence in Saudi Arabia, US officials told the Journal.

 

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited the Gulf last week, making stops in the UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain, in what Riyadh viewed as a snub, WSJ said.

 

A week earlier, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman turned down an invitation to participate in a G7 summit in France — which was attended by Trump — in protest of Washington’s handling of the war, sources familiar with the matter told WSJ.

 

Saudi Arabia had lobbied Trump against launching the war, fearing that efforts to topple the Iranian regime wouldn’t work and that Tehran would respond by closing the Strait of Hormuz, destabilizing the region and damaging the global economy.

 

Trump went ahead with the war, anyway, exacerbating Saudi concerns that its investment in the relationship with the US president wasn’t translating into actual influence over American policy, Arab officials told the Journal.

 

After initial reluctance, the kingdom and other Gulf states allowed the US to use their bases for attacks against Iran, as they quickly found themselves bearing the brunt of Tehran’s retaliatory strikes.

 

Saudi Arabia even launched a number of its own strikes against Iranian drone and missile sites, US officials and a Gulf official said.

 

Iran proceeded to target energy sites, including ones in Saudi Arabia, leading Riyadh to begin pushing for a diplomatic resolution to de-escalate tensions.

 

Saudi Arabia took particular issue with continued Emirati attacks on Iran, fearing that it put regional energy facilities at further risk.

 

Riyadh wanted the US to pressure the UAE to halt its attacks and join regional diplomatic efforts to end the war, WSJ reported.

 

Abu Dhabi’s hardline stance against Iran further exacerbated tensions with Saudi Arabia that have been bubbling for the past year. The UAE pulled out of the Saudi-led OPEC in April.

 

Saudi Arabia also pushed the US during the war to drop its blockade of Iranian ports, something that Trump refused to do until a deal was reached last month.

 

The memorandum of understanding, which has been tested by recent exchanges of fire between the sides, includes a 60-day ceasefire pausing the war that broke out with US-Israeli strikes targeting the Iranian regime in late February, as well as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a timeframe for a final deal to permanently end the conflict and reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

 

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that Trump has told aides that he believes that deadline to be moveable.

 

Israel had no part in negotiating the memorandum of understanding, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has distanced himself from it. Still, the terms of the opening clause, permanently ending the war and ruling out any resumption, assert that it is binding on the US, Iran “and their allies.”

 

Israeli officials are bitterly opposed to the deal’s terms, which resolve none of the war’s key goals — notably, eliminating Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs and creating the conditions for the collapse of the regime.

Paramedics responded to a ‘cardiac arrest’ at Mitch McConnell’s home on day of hospitalization

McConnell’s office said Thursday that he is still in the hospital. It hasn’t disclosed why he was admitted June 14.

 

Paramedics conducted CPR on a person experiencing a “cardiac arrest” at a known address for Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on the day his office disclosed he had been hospitalized, according to police scanner audio obtained by NBC News.

 

According to the audio, the first medic on the scene began performing CPR, according to the dispatchers, and was then joined by an additional EMS team at the same address.

 

McConnell’s office, which has not disclosed why he was hospitalized, referred NBC News to a June 22 statement when it was asked about the audio Wednesday.

 

“Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week,” said the statement, from spokesman David Popp.

 

On Thursday, a spokesperson saidMcConnell remains hospitalized.

 

“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”

 

Punchbowl News previously reported on the response by paramedics.

 

McConnell’s office said in a short statement June 14: “Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care.”He has not been seen since he was hospitalized.

 

McConnell, 84, has faced a slew of health issues in recent years. He was hospitalized for more than a week this year with “flu-like symptoms,” and three years ago he tripped at a Washington dinner, after which he was hospitalized with a concussion.

 

In 2019, he fractured a shoulder when he fell at home.

 

McConnell raised eyebrows when he froze on camera multiple times in 2023, seemingly unable to answer reporters’ questions immediately.

 

McConnell, who was first elected in 1984, was the Senate Republican leader from 2007 to 2025, making him the chamber’s longest-serving party leader. He announced last year that he would not seek re-election.
