Mike Caruso, the Palm Beach County clerk of courts and a staunch ally of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, was arrested Tuesday morning on charges linked to child sexual abuse, state officials announced.

Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the arrest in a statement on X.

“Early this morning, with substantial assistance from FDLE and local law enforcement, Palm Beach County Clerk of Court Michael Caruso was arrested on charges related to child sexual abuse,” the statement said. “The investigation is ongoing, and we will provide more information to the public at the appropriate time.”

President Trump has complied with every order of the Court over his nearly six years in office. If the court attempts to control the executive mansion, that could spell the end of executive deference to court rulings

Because of extremely unfortunate, inexplicable and reckless decisions of two lower courts, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has before him an application for a stay of an order from the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit which order upholds the imposition of a rococo construction schedule for the above-ground construction of the new East Wing of the White House, one which was ordered by U.S. District Judge Richard Leon’s micromanagement of what can and cannot be built in the replacement structure of the now demolished old East Wing of the White House — an East Wing which was built in 1902 and expanded in 1942 when FDR had it substantially expanded and added underground facilities which include the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. An 84-year-old "emergency center" is, of course, outdated.

Judge Leon and the Circuit have directed President Trump what he can and cannot build on the grounds of the Executive Mansion. Judge Leon is an old acquaintance of mine and has been a fine judge for his long tenure (he was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2002 and assumed senior status in 2016), but even the best judges throw a spanner every now and then, and this order is one of those.

Judge Neomi Rao, perhaps the most brilliant intellect on the D.C. Circuit, issued a comprehensive dissent to the rambling wreck of the circuit court’s lengthy opinion. The Department of Justice has asked the Chief Justice to stay the order of the Circuit Court and thus Judge Leon’s order.

Justice Roberts requested the Trust’s response, due by noon (EDT) on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

I hope the Chief Justice stays the D.C. Circuit order Tuesday by COB and makes it clear that construction may continue until and unless the Supreme Court itself orders it halted. Not only are there obvious "standing issues" that should have barred the courts from reaching to the "merits" of the case brought by the National Trust for Historic Preservation (as President Trump noted in a post Thursday,) but the heart of the debate is presidential authority over the Executive Mansion and its attached grounds and other structures related to the role of commander in chief.

This is not a close case. A terse opinion may follow on the ongoing, urgent need to allow this president and all future presidents authority over their home/office/national security facilities within that area as well as associated areas such as Camp David.

To ignore the rapidly evolving threats to the White House and any facility used frequently by any president against this reality would be reckless beyond reason and defy common sense. Judge Rao’s dissent from the D.C. Circuit decision is persuasive, but it is too long. The idea that there has to be a process to change the White House facilities (or Camp David or any national security facility threatened by the continually changing capabilities of the country’s enemies) is ridiculous and should be declared so in short, sharp sentences aimed at restoring common sense to the country’s awareness of the threats it faces.

The Constitution would not have established the separate but equal branch of the Executive (which also names him the commander in chief of the military) without including within those grants the necessary and proper powers to conduct both the execution of the laws and the facilities necessary to the command-and-control of the military.

The backdrop to this case is not just repeated attempts on the lives of this and other presidents, but also rapidly evolving surveillance technology that has to be countered, and, of course, the astonishing evolution of the threats from drones and hypersonic missiles over the past three years. This president and future presidents should not be hindered in securing their homes, offices and national security facilities from a threat matrix that has soared off the charts.

Recall that on 9/11, Vice President Dick Cheney was physically lifted up and out of his West Wing office. Where do you think he was taken? The Blue Room?

What do you imagine is being built below the new East Wing?

Imagine the consequences of a state sponsor of terror successfully targeting the White House in the near term if necessary defenses that would have deflected the attack are not in place because of this ridiculous litigation.

"Trump Derangement Syndrome" has spread far and wide, but while the hard left in this country (and the terror-based regimes which align with the objectives of the radicals) would love to see a commander in chief denied authority over his command structures and defense of his residence, the Supreme Court should move quickly to end this circus.

Most of America, and certainly its highest court, would rather spend the rest of its summer break relaxing and preparing for another term that begins in October.

But that’s not what would-be assassin nutters much less the Iranian Revolutionary Guard are doing this August. The Supreme Court "must never forget that it is a constitution we are expounding," and this is the rare case where common sense about the Constitution should see the stay issue and construction resumed according to the design the president has approved after consultations with the Secret Service and the Pentagon.

A judge has sentenced Adam Sheafe to life in prison for killing Pastor Bill Schonemann, 76, in a crucifixion-style attack inside Schonemann’s New River, Arizona, home in April 2025.

Sheafe, 52, who represented himself, additionally received a 35-year sentence and two separate 25-year sentences on attempted murder charges Friday, with all sentences ordered to run consecutively, Arizona's Family reported.

That outcome followed a plea deal accepted in June that took capital punishment off the table. Sheafe had confessed to the killing and told investigators he intended to kill a dozen-plus additional religious leaders, saying he believed Christian leaders were leading their congregations astray by teaching that Jesus is equal to God, as CP previously reported.

Schonemann, who was known to his congregation at New River Bible Chapel as "Pastor Bill," had his arms outstretched with his hands pinned to a wall, a posture the Maricopa County Attorney's Office said resembled crucifixion. He turned up dead and bloodied in his bed on April 28, 2025.

Sheafe said in a jailhouse interview that he drove from Phoenix to Schonemann's house on a Sunday, killed him and put thorns around his head, a reference to the crown of thorns in Christian tradition. He said he wanted to target only pastors he accused of leading their congregations astray, and at one point expressed a desire to "execute every single priest and burn every church to the ground."

Thirteen more Christian leaders were on his list, Sheafe said, naming states including Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Alabama and Texas.

Sheafe traveled to Sedona after the killing, planning to kill two more people, and was arrested two days later after a manhunt spanning the state.

Perseids from Perseus

This was a good year for the Perseids meteor shower. A key reason was the Moon was absent from lighting up Earth's night sky so that more meteors were visible than usual. Where was the Moon? It was busy visiting the Sun. Near the Perseids peak, the Moon moved directly in front of the Sun and created a total solar eclipse visible from Greenland and Spain. The Perseids occur when the Earth collides with a stream of Sun-orbiting debris cast off by Comet Swift-Tuttle. Perseid meteors, although typically only the size of a sand grain, tend to be fast and bright because Swift-Tuttle's debris orbits the Sun in a direction partly opposite Earth's orbital motion. Oswaldo Pirela, 34, who is from Venezuela, was taken into custody early Sunday at El Paso (Texas) International Airport, his wife, Kemberly Avila, told The Athletic on Monday. He was not carrying his work permit card at the time, according to his brother, Jorge Pirela.

The Padres' Triple-A affiliate is the El Paso Chihuahuas. Pirela was traveling home to Arizona, his family said.

"We recently became aware of the detainment of minor league catching coordinator Oswaldo Pirela in El Paso, Texas," the Padres said in a statement Monday. "We are working to gather additional information and will not have any further comment at this time."

Why it matters: Florida, MAGA's beating heart, is President Trump's home and was a top, successful target of his redistricting push to add more GOP-leaning congressional seats.

Zoom in: What makes some of the contests stand out isn't their competitiveness — it's how they invoke the wacky Florida Man internet meme.

These campaigns featured carpetbaggers, racial conflict, homophobia, struggling socialists, antisemitism, and even a scandal-plagued member of Congress slapped with a restraining order.

"It's like Florida Man is having his own election right now," said a Republican political consultant financing one of the state's marquee races.

Between the lines: As in the rest of the nation, Trump's approval ratings have declined in Florida. But it's a mostly Republican state, and oddsmakers andpolitical insiders from both parties believe the odds still favor the GOP. Registered Republicans outnumber Democrats by about 1.5 million in Florida. In 2018, Trump's prior midterm, Democrats outnumbered registered Republicans by 245,000.

Tuesday's key showdowns in Florida:

The governor's race: Rep. Byron Donalds is expected to cruise to a win over his lesser-known and comparatively underfunded opponents in the Republican primary.

Donalds is on the cusp of becoming the GOP's first Black nominee for Florida governor, and he'd be the favorite to become the Sunshine State's first Black governor.

One of Donalds' opponents — James Fishback — has generated social media buzz and snagged mainstream media coverage, partly with racist dog whistles. Two weeks ago, a federal judge ordered Fishback to pay his former hedge fund $1.3 million in attorneys' fees and costs stemming from a contentious split.

On the Democratic side, former Rep. David Jolly is outraising and outspending lesser-known rivals. Jolly, a former Republican, made the unorthodox decision to pick former Democratic Rep. Gwen Graham as his running mate long before the primary.

The Senate race: From Tallahassee to D.C.,Democrats' consensus view is that the party's likely nominee, Alex Vindman, has run such a lackluster campaign that he may come uncomfortably close to his underfunded opponent, state Rep. Angie Nixon.

A polllast month from a Democratic-leaning group, shared with Axios, showed Vindman up by just 10 points.

Vindman, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, played a starring role in Trump's first impeachment trial. Vindman's twin brother, Eugene, is a House member from Virginia. Nixon recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America, long viewed as too far left for Florida.

On the Republican side, Sen. Ashley Moody, the former state attorney general who was appointed to her seat last year, ==faces token opposite.

Like Vindman, Moody faces internal party grumbling about running an uninspiring campaign.Unlike Vindman, Moody has more voters and, in the words of one top Senate GOP consultant, "she's going to ride Byron Donalds' coattailsand the $100 million he'll spend to get out the vote."

Stargazers across the UK are being encouraged to look up towards the end of August as a lesser-known meteor shower begins appearing in the night sky and builds towards its September peak.

According to Alan Jones, astronomy expert at 365 Astronomy, the Alpha Aurigid meteor shower becomes active from around 25 August, giving UK stargazers another opportunity to spot shooting stars after the Perseids begin to fade.

The shower is expected to reach its peak around 1 September, making the final days of August a good time for anyone wanting to get outside and look up.

“The Alpha Aurigids are a relatively minor meteor shower, but that doesn't make them any less interesting for stargazers,” said Alan.

“They are created when Earth passes through a stream of debris left behind by a comet. As these tiny particles enter our atmosphere at extremely high speeds, they heat up and burn, creating the bright streaks of light we see as meteors.”

“The shower gets its name from Auriga, the Charioteer, a constellation in the northern sky,” Alan said.

“This doesn't mean that the meteors are actually coming from Auriga. They can appear anywhere across the sky, but if you trace their paths backwards, they appear to originate from this particular region.”

The Alpha Aurigids become active from around 25 August, with activity increasing towards their peak around 1 September. “For UK observers, the final few nights of August are a good opportunity to look for the Alpha Aurigids before their peak,” said Alan.

“The best time to watch is generally during the early morning hours, when the radiant is higher in the sky and there is less interference from the horizon.”

However, stargazers don't need to stare directly at Auriga. Alan said: "Don't worry too much about finding the exact constellation.

Meteors can streak across a huge area of the sky, so the best approach is to find a dark location and give yourself as wide a view of the sky as possible.

“Sometimes the best way to get into astronomy is simply to go outside and look up. You don't need a telescope, and you don't need to know every constellation.

Find somewhere dark, give your eyes time to adjust and be patient. You may be surprised by what you see.”

The House races:Florida's 25th House District: Redrawn by GOP legislators to favor Republicans, the Democratic primary is a test between the pro-Israel establishment (which supports Rep. Jared Moskowitz) and the anti-Zionist progressive left (which backs Oliver Larkin, a democratic socialist).

The 20th is a historically Black-held seat. But the only white primary candidate, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, could win if African Americans split their votes among the other four candidates, all of whom are Black.

Jiami rap icon Luther Campbell, one of those Black candidates, has blasted Wasserman Schultz for moving from her district to this one after Republican legislators redrew her district to favor the GOP.

Florida's 6th District: In the GOP primary, Rep. Randy Fine, a pro-Israel conservative who's made incendiary comments about Palestinians, is being challenged by former "manosphere" influencer Dan Bilzerian — who has drawn bipartisan condemnation for his hate speech in the race.

On Thursday, Bilzerian posted an AI video calling Fine a "fat Jew" and referencing Hitler by asking, "Should we revisit that Austrian painter's opinions?"

Fine is expected to win.

Florida's 24th District:In the Democratic primary, a mystery group last week blasted out a text message that falsely said it was sent by Equality Florida and smeared state Sen. Shevrin Jones by claiming he had tested positive for HIV. Jones, who is gay, does not have HIV.

Six primary candidates, all African American, are running for this historically Black and heavily Democratic Miami seat.

Florida's 7th District: In the GOP primary, Rep. Cory Mills is widely considered the state's most scandal-plagued member of Congress. He's been accused of "stolen valor" over his military record, faced a federal investigation and is suspected of abusing at least two girlfriends in separate instances.

Last year, a judge issued a restraining order against Mills after he allegedly threatened to release sexual videos of one of the ex-girlfriends.Trump had endorsed Mills last year but last week issued a new endorsement list again that notably snubbed him. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) also said he doesn't support Mills.

Republican insiders say he's in danger of losing in the crowded primary to former TV reporter Ryan Elijah.

Florida's 19th District: This crowded GOP race in Southwest Florida has become known as the "carpetbagger primary," in which a record five candidates have run for Congress in other states. Two are former House members.
