The Seneca Nation is demanding that President Donald Trump reverse his decision to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” arguing that the move disregards Indigenous history and violates a longstanding treaty.

Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca said on Friday that Trump’s executive order shows “blatant disrespect” for the Indigenous people and their history tied to the lake.

“The President cannot assert ownership over our culture or erase it through irresponsible political action,” Seneca said.

Trump signed the order this week directing the Interior Department to update the lake’s name in the U.S. government’s geographic naming system within 30 days.

The change applies to U.S. federal usage and does not alter Canada’s designation of the lake.

The Seneca Nation argues that the order conflicts with the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua, signed by President George Washington and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.

The treaty established a lasting relationship between the United States and the Haudenosaunee nations.

How the Great Law of Peace Helped Shape New York and American Democracy

Long before Europeans came to North America, a thriving democratic system was established in the heart of what would become New York State. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy, known to the French colonists as the Iroquois League and the English colonists as the League of Five Nations (later, Six Nations), was already well-established, united in a confederation of nations governed by their Great Law of Peace. As we enter Native American Heritage Month, the Historical Society of the New York Courts would like to honor the Haudenosaunee’s deep contributions to the development of our own democracy, here in New York State and the United States overall with just a peek into the story of how the Haudenosaunee’s governance principles played a pivotal role in shaping New York’s government and laying the foundation for American democracy.

The Haudenosaunee Confederacy

The Haudenosaunee, composed of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca nations, with the later inclusion of the Tuscarora, were the original inhabitants of the land that is now New York State, as well as parts of contemporary Canada. They established a system of governance known as the Great Law of Peace, which dates to the 12th or 13th century. This system embodied principles that resonated with the very core of democracy. The Great Law of Peace is said to have been brought to the nations by the Great Peacemaker, who helped the previously conflicting nations to come together in a confederacy on the shores of Onondaga Lake near today’s Syracuse.

A Council of Nations

At the heart of the Haudenosaunee system was the “Great Council,” a council composed of representatives from each member nation. While it might not have been a direct antecedent of today’s Congress, it shared the fundamental principle of representative democracy. These representatives, or sachems, deliberated and made decisions by striving for consensus, a concept that is a cornerstone of American democracy. Consensus decision-making, the process where all parties involved must agree on major decisions, was central to the Haudenosaunee’s governance. They understood that fostering unity and ensuring that every voice was heard was essential. This emphasis on consensus echoes in the American political system where the framers of the U.S. Constitution aimed to reach agreements and compromise among diverse interests.

Decision-Making by Consensus

The Haudenosaunee’s unique clan system also played a significant role in their governance. Their society was organized into clans, each associated with a different animal or symbol. These clans are matrilineal, meaning descent and membership were traced through the mother’s line. The clan system influenced leadership selection and maintained social order, an early form of checks and balances that we find in the American political structure.

The Great Law of Peace was not simply a theoretical concept; it was symbolically recorded and transmitted through wampum belts. These meticulously crafted beadwork belts conveyed messages, agreements, and the history of the Haudenosaunee. This reliance on symbolism and oral tradition resonates with the early history of the United States when foundational documents like the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were read aloud and discussed in public forums, emphasizing the importance of shared values and symbols.

Another enduring symbol of Haudenosaunee culture is the “Tree of Peace,” typically represented by a white pine tree. This symbolized the end of wars and the establishment of peace among the member nations. It illustrates a strong commitment to peaceful coexistence, a value that also found its way into the American ethos.

Influence on Early Leaders

Several of the American Founding Fathers, such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, had direct interactions with the Haudenosaunee and were exposed to their political and social systems. Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has acknowledged that a drone depot was set up in a residential area outside Kiev after a Russian UAV strike obliterated the facility. Secondary detonations of explosives stored there caused severe damage to the surrounding area, killing at least 27 people in nearby homes.

Later on Saturday, the regional authorities reported that the death toll has climbed to 37.

In a post on his Telegram channel, Zelensky wrote that a warehouse in the village of Milaya had been struck by Russian kamikaze drones, leading to a “subsequent detonation” and “significant destruction of the surrounding infrastructure.” The latter included residential buildings and a nursing home for the elderly, according to the Ukrainian leader.

“Those who allowed this to happen must definitely be held responsible for their decisions,” Zelensky said, adding that the authorities have launched a probe into criminal negligence.

“There cannot be ammunition near houses or other residential buildings,” he concluded.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Saturday that overnight its strike drones destroyed several facilities used by the Ukrainian military in Kiev and the adjacent Kiev Region. According to the statement, the depot in the village of Milaya was operated by one of Ukraine’s top arms manufacturers, Fire Point, and contained components of fixed-wing UAVs, which Kiev is using for long-range attacks on Russian territory.

In the wake of the latest disaster in Milaya, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry ordered a nationwide audit of all sites where weapons and munitions are being stored.

This is not the first time Ukrainian civilians have been killed following Russian strikes on such facilities in residential areas.

In early July, an ammunition depot in the city of Vishnyovoe in Kiev Region came under Russian attack, causing huge secondary explosions. As a result, at least seven people lost their lives and around 200 private homes were damaged, with dozens more evacuated.

Back then, Zelensky and other senior Ukrainian officials similarly pledged to end the practice of storing munitions in the middle of residential areas.

Placing military targets in civilian population areas is strictly prohibited under international law and is considered a form of using non-combatants as human shields.

The Russian military has carried out a wave of strikes on military-related targets in Kiev and its suburbs,including a facility storing components for Ukraine’s long-range Flamingo cruise missiles, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

The statement came after a series of powerful secondary explosions tore through a warehouse complex near Kiev on Friday night, with videos circulating on social media showing fireballs flying off for hundreds of meters.

The next morning, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the strikes, saying the attack, which involved missiles and drones, hit the Fim Service transport and logistics center in the Kiev suburb of Chaiky. The facility was used for storing Flamingo missiles, it added.

Another logistics center in Kalinovka, Kiev Region, was also hit, the ministry said, noting that the facility hosted a customs terminal responsible for distributing Western-supplied military cargo.

The Russian military also reported striking an ammunition warehouse in the settlement of Milaya operated by Fire Point which contained components and launch boosters for long-range FP-1 and FP-2 drones.

The attacks also targeted a parking area for fuel tankers in Izmail in southern Ukraine, which was used to supply the Ukrainian military. In Nikolayev, the barrage targeted a maritime cargo terminal and logistics centers used to unload and store military supplies, with a total of 18 facilities containing military equipment and three fuel depots hit, according to the statement.

The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly vowed to carry out “systematic and consistent strikes” on Ukraine’s military-industrial facilities in retaliation for Kiev’s “terrorist attacks” on Russian civilian targets. Moscow has maintained that it never targets civilians.

The head of the Kiev Region’s military administration, Timur Tkachenko, confirmed that the warehouse blaze was accompanied by explosions. Authorities temporarily closed a 17 km stretch of the M-06 Kiev-Chop highway in both directions and urged residents to stay away and not record the aftermath.

Several open-source monitoring accounts claimed the strike took place at around 8:35 PM and involved Russian jet-powered Geran-4 loitering munitions targeting a warehouse complex near the village of Milaya.

Later in the day, Vladimir Zelensky claimed 27 people were killed and dozens more injured after a warehouse in Milaya was hit. Furthermore, he admitted that the ammunition was apparently stored illegally near residential areas, saying that the Ukrainian authorities had opened a criminal investigation into possible negligence.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergey Koretsky said he had received reports from the interior minister and the head of Ukraine’s State Emergency Service about the strike, which he said caused a fire followed by a “detonation.”

But the prime minister then drew a pointed comparison with the deadly July explosion at an ammunition depot in Vishnevoye, another Kiev suburb.

“Unfortunately, we can already state that the terrible tragedy in Vishnevoye did not become a lesson,” Koretsky said. He lamented making “the same mistakes” in the fifth year of the conflict, calling it “criminal negligence,” and demanded that everyone responsible face “strict punishment.”

While the prime minister did not spell out what those repeated mistakes were, his reference appeared to point to the storage of explosive military materiel in or near populated areas.

On July 6, a Russian strike on Vishnevoye triggered massive secondary explosions at an ammunition warehouse belonging to an enterprise within Ukraine’s state defense conglomerate Ukroboronprom. Vladimir Zelensky subsequently acknowledged that the facility was an ammunition depot.

Ukraine’s Security Service later said investigators found that ammunition had been kept in warehouses unsuitable for such storage and without the required permits, including facilities in the “immediate proximity” of residential areas.

Two defense-industry executives were detained on negligence charges. Ukroboronprom separately dismissed the heads of two enterprises over ammunition storage violations, while the conglomerate’s director general, Herman Smetanin, stepped down days later without publicly giving a reason.
